Portraits, Kings, Landscape: The Practice of Painting at Udaipur

Bhagwat prakash, 2nd floor, zenana mahal.

Drawn from the ancestral collection of the rulers of Mewar, the exhibition places paintings at the heart of Mewar’s court life. Curated by Dr Shailka Mishra, it emphasizes on the role of paintings as going beyond their illustrative and documentary nature to reflect not only the power and authority of the Maharanas but also its strategic use in the self-fashioning of the Sisodia dynasty. It particularly acknowledges and celebrates the role and skill of Udaipur’s artists; an underlying theme in the exhibition.

This exhibition was made possible by the financial assistance provided by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The City Palace Museum, Udaipur is housed within the very iconic, 450 year old Palace, the former abode of the rulers of Mewar. It was formally declared as a Museum open to the public in 1969 through the efforts of Maharana Bhagwat Singh of Mewar (r. 1955-1984 CE). The Mardana Mahal and Zenana Mahal of The City Palace, Udaipur was bequeathed to the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), a trust established by Maharana Bhagwat Singh himself. With it, he also provided a major endowment for the cause. Thus, The City Palace Museum, Udaipur came into being. Fifty years hence; The City Palace Museum has grown immensely and continues to draw visitors in increasing numbers from all across the globe.

Maharana Udai Singh II (r. 1537-1572 CE) realized that he had to look elsewhere, someplace peaceful to establish his capital. After much wandering and deliberation, he came to this area, today known as Udaipur, named after the Maharana, in 1553 CE. The City Palace, Udaipur grew with successive reigns of the Maharanas, most of whom zealously pursued the architectural constructions and expansions of the established Palace Complex.

In 1947, India stood as an independent, democratic nation, free from the British rule. The titles of the royals were abolished and their states were merged into the Union of India. Out of sheer necessity and to maintain these vast, beautiful and historic buildings, most of the rulers had no choice but to convert their private palaces into either Heritage Hotels or into Museums. The Palace at Udaipur too became a Museum called The City Palace Museum, Udaipur.

The royal family of Mewar and its mighty kingdom are believed to have descended from the Sun, Suryavanshis as they are called, tracing lineage from Lord Rama through his elder son Lav. Way prior to Udaipur being selected as the capital, several other flourishing towns served as the capital; Nagda being its oldest. Lying at a distance of twenty kilometres to the north of Udaipur, Nagda (Nagdriha), was proclaimed as capital in 626 CE by Nagaditya (r. 626-646 CE), the fourth ruler of Mewar; it remained likewise up until the early 13th century. At different points of time, the capital shifted to and fro between Nagda and Aghatpur (Ahad).

Rawal Jaitra Singh (r. 1213-53 CE) shifted the capital to Chittor, and constructed the fort wall for the first time. In the 16th century, Chittor faced several invasions; including rulers from Delhi, Malwa and Gujarat who were very ambitious and wanted to acquire Chittor for themselves.

Maharana Udai Singh II (r. 1537-1572 CE) realized that he had to look elsewhere, someplace peaceful to establish his capital. After much wandering and deliberation, he came to this area, today known as Udaipur, named after the Maharana, in 1553 CE. One of the architectural wonders of Rajasthan, City Palace in Udaipur is the largest palace complex of the state. The most popular sightseeing place in Udaipur , City Palace stands magnificently on the eastern banks of Lake Pichola . Flanked by the Aravali mountain range, City Palace is worth admiring for its natural settings that offer a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

History of City Palace Udaipur

The History of City Palace is related to the kingdom of Mewar that has gone through several capital changes during the reign of its many rulers. The capital was first established in Nagda in 568 AD by Guhil, the first Maharana of Mewar. It was later moved to Chittor in the 8th century under the rule of Sisodias.

During 1537, the Mewar kingdom came under the rule of Maharana Udai Singh II. Due to war with the Mughals there was a risk of losing the Chittor fort. Hence, Maharana Udai Singh II chose a new capital for his kingdom near Lake Pichola that shielded the territory from its enemies, well surrounded by forests, lakes and the imposing Aravalli hills.

The construction of City Palace started under the reign of Maharana Udai Singh II and was enhanced subsequently by his successors over a period of 400 years. This palace is of great historical importance as it served as the administrative complex of the Maharanas.

The first royal structure that was built in the City palace complex was 'Rai Angan', the royal courtyard. After the death of Maharana Udai Singh II, his son Maharana Pratap took over Udaipur. During the Battle of Haldighati, Maharana Pratap lost the war to the Mughal emperor Akbar and Udaipur came under the rule of the Mughals.

After Akbar’s death, Mewar was handed over to Maharana Pratap's son and successor Amar Singh I by the Mughal ruler Jahangir. Udaipur once again fell into the attacks of Marathas in the year 1761. To protect Mewar from further attacks, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British in 1818 asking for their protection. After India’s independence, Mewar became a part of democratic India and kings of Mewar retained the ownership of the palaces in Udaipur.

Architecture of City Palace Udaipur

Built in granite and marble, City Palace complex is worth admiring for its perfect blend of Medieval, European and Chinese architecture. The several palaces in the complex stand magnificently behind the 100ft high and 801 ft long facade built exquisitely on the ridge of Lake Pichola.

Located at an elevation of 1,962 ft, the City Palace complex was built by the 22 generations of Sisodia Rajputs over an extensive period of time starting from the year of 1559. Udai Singh II and several other Maharanas have contributed significantly for the construction of this impressive complex. The complex comprises of 11 small palaces and other structures built homogeneously in its design.

The interiors of the palace complex are as commendable as its exteriors. The intricate mirror-work, marble-work, murals, wall paintings, silver-work, inlay-work and colored glass that adorn the balconies, towers and cupolas of the complex are worth admiring.

The terraces in the upper part of the complex offer a breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding Udaipur city. The palaces in the complex are connected by chowks and the corridors in the palace are built in zigzag manner to evade any surprise attacks from enemies.

The City Palace complex is enriched with many structures that can be reached through the main Tripolia (triple) gate which acts as the entry point to the complex.

Other structures within the complex are the Suraj Gokhda (public address facade), Mor-chowk (Peacock courtyard), Dilkhush Mahal (heart’s delight), Surya Chopar, Sheesh Mahal (Palace of glass and mirrors), Moti Mahal (Palace of Pearls), Krishna Vilas, Shambhu Niwas, Bhim Vilas, Amar Vilas (with a raised garden), Badi Mahal (the big palace), Fateh Prakash Palace and the Shiv Niwas Palace.

The complex also has facilities of a post office, bank and travel agency. There are a number of craft shops and an Indian boutique supported by World Wildlife Fund(WWF) that the tourists can visit on their trip to the palace complex.

The Mewar royal family owns the entire Palace complex and the structures in the complex are maintained by various trusts. The Fateh Prakash Palace and the Shiv Niwas Palace are now transformed into heritage hotels.

The City Palace complex has a number of structures that boast of splendid architecture, making it a must visit tourist destination for history lovers.

The structures within the complex are:

1. Gateways

Also called as Pols, Gateways are the entry points to the palace complex. There are three major gateways to the complex. 'Badi Pol' (Great Gate) is the main entry point to the complex that leads to the first courtyard. After crossing the ‘Badi Pol’, one encounters a triple arched gate called as ‘Tripola’, the northern entry to the complex.

The two gates - 'Badi Pol' and ‘Tripola’ are aligned beautifully with eight marble arches or Toranas. According to the legends, the Maharanas used to weigh themselves against gold and silver here, which was later distributed among the local people.

Once through the ‘Tripolia’ gate, an arena near the Toran Pol is encountered where elephant fights were held in the past. These elephants were later chosen for war campaigns according to their prowess. Across Tripolia gate there is another gate known as ‘Elephant gate’ or the ‘Hathi Pol’.

2. Amar Vilas

Located at the highest point of the City Palace, Amar Vilas is an elevated garden that serves as the topmost court within the complex. Built in Mughal style architecture, Amar Vilas is the entry point to Badi Mahal, another alluring structure within the complex.

13. Mor Chowk

A part of the inner courts of the palace, Mor Chowk or Peacock square was built during the rule of Maharana Sajjan Singh, about 200 years later than the initial establishment of the palace. Three peacocks depicting the three seasons - summer, winter and monsoon magnificently adorn the walls of the Mor Chowk.

Decorated with glass and mirror mosaics, the three peacocks in Mor Chowk are crafted with around 5000 glass pieces glowing brightly in blue, green and gold colors.

The pictures of Lord Krishna in the apartments in front of the Chowk are worth admiring. The upper level consists of a balcony surrounded with colored glass inserts and an adjacent chamber known as Kanch-ki-Burj consists of mosaics of mirrors decorating the walls. Rising from the bank of Lake Pichola, the imposing City Palace is a grand icon of Udaipur's and Rajasthan's royal past. A must-visit destination for anyone who comes to Udaipur, City Palace is the largest palace in Rajasthan. With a facade that is 244 m long and 30.4 m high, the palace complex has 11 smaller palaces. Construction of the palace was started in 1599 by Maharana Udai Singh II, the city’s founder, and was extended by his successsors. Though today, it seems uniform, like the brainchild of one man. It includes two luxurious palace hotels, a school and the popular City Palace Museum. With ornate towers, cupolas, arched doorways and protruding balconies, the City Palace is an architectural marvel and represents an exquisite blend of Rajasthani, Mughal, European and oriental architecture styles. It has a maze of courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms and hanging gardens. Encircled by fortifications, this stately palace is built in granite and marble. The massive gates of the palace are known as ‘pols’ with Bara Pol being the main gate, which leads to the first courtyard. On passing Bara Pol, one comes across a triple arched gate, known as Tripolia. Between these two gates, one can see eight marble arches or 'toranas', where its is said kings used to weigh themselves with gold and silver. Next to Tripolia is an arena where elephant fights were staged. Across Tripolia, is the Elephant Gate or the Hathi Pol. In 1974, a large part of the City Palace was turned into a museum, known as the City palace Museum. You can still marvel at the royal family's horses at the stables next to the museum. Inside the museum, first comes Rai Angan, where it is said king Udai Singh met a sage who asked him to build the city.

Its walls are lined with rare paintings. Next comes Bada Mahal is the exotic garden palace that stands a 90-feet-high natural rock formation. Inside, there is an enviable collection of rare paintings, antique furniture and exquisite glass mirror and ornamental tile-works. Manak Mahal has an exquisite collection of crystal and porcelain figures, while Bhim Vilas flaunts a fabulous collection of miniature paintings depicting the real life stories of Radha-Krishna. Krishna Vilas is known for miniature paintings portraying royal processions, festivals and games of the queens. Moti Mahal is celebrated for its lavish decor while Sheesh Mahal is known for its breathtaking mirror work. Chinese and Dutch ornamental tiles can be seen at Chini Chitrashala and Dilkusha Mahal is known for murals and wall paintings. The Zenana Mahal’s central courtyard, Laxmi Vilas Chowk, contains a beautiful white pavilion and a stable of howdahs, palanquins and other people-carriers. Another must-see place here is the Durbar Hall, with some of most impressive chandeliers. The walls display weapons and portraits of former kings of Mewar. The foundation stone of this hall was laid in 1909 by Lord Minto, the viceroy of India, during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh. The hall is inside the Crystal Gallery. Amar Vilas is the highest point of the palace with wonderful hanging gardens with fountains, towers and terraces, offering one of the most magical views of Lake Pichola. The City Palace is constructed in such a  way that the lake can be viewed from any of its balconies, cupolas and towers. While, from the outside, it may appear to be almost nondescript, one has to step inside to appreciate its artistic heritage. Such is its splendour that it's not rare for visitors to lose themselves amidst the delicate mirror-work, marble work, murals, wall paintings, silver work, inlay work and coloured glass!

History of City Palace

This palace was built right in the time of establishment of Udaipur city . Over the next 400 years, the palace had been the main site of administration, built and rebuilt by many kings. The region of the palace belonged to Mewar Kingdom during 568 AD. During 16 th century, the kingdom was inherited by Maharana Uday Singh. When his capital city of Chittor was under war, he decided to build a new capital kingdom, closer to Lake Pichola. The site was chosen by the advice of a hermit that the king met during one of his hunting tours. The first structure to be built was the royal courtyard.

During the construction, Udai Singh II died and his son took over the construction. However, in the Haldighati Battle, the palace came under the control of Akbar. Later, it went back to the Rajputs and the construction continued until it went back to the hands of British in 19 th century. Even under the British rule, the Rajputs built many structures inside the complex. After independence, the palace complex came under the rule of Indian government.

City Palace Udaipur

12 interesting things in City Palace Udaipur

“if you didn’t see the City Palace Udaipur, you didn’t see half of Udaipur”   This is  e xactly what our guide uttered as he took us inside the huge palace.

On the fourth and final day of our trip to Udaipur in 2016 , the city of lakes, we decided to explore the old city. This included a trip to the City Palace,Jagdish Temple, Bagore ki Haveli museum, Lake Pichola and some time shopping. So, with this great plan we started off from our hotel in two rented cabs (since we were total of 5 people).

The initial chaos at City Palace Udaipur with two gates

Within 10 mins time we arrived at the City Palace Udaipur entrance, just near the Jagdish temple. There is a ticket counter besides the entrance. We thought it better that in lieu of time, we purchase our tickers before the rest of our family arrives. So, we merrily went to the counter and bought our tickets. Right besides the counter stand a few certified guides. One of them approached us with a decent rate for showing across the whole palace. And we happily struck the deal. There after we started waiting for the rest of our family.

We got a call from them almost 10 mins afterwards saying they have reached the gates. But we were standing right at the gates. And definitely we couldn’t see them. And they couldn’t spot us too. Thus, we asked the guards at the gate. That’s when they informed us there is one more gate to the palace and they might have landed there. With a relief, we decided to enter inside the campus and then wait for them.

Inside the palace grounds

We entered inside with our guide. Right across from the gate where we entered , there seemed to be another road, leading to another gate after a few lefts and rights. That must be the gate from where our family was going to enter. We decided to wait right in the middle of the campus so as not to miss sighting them by any chance. Meanwhile, we also started to explore the campus.

City Palace Udaipur 2

The city palace Udaipur has a sprawling huge campus. At one end is the main public gate. There is another gate at the other end of the campus, that leads to the private section where the royal family resides. A major portion of the palace, lying between these gates is open for the public visit, housing several museums and other pieces of interest. While another major portion is divided into 3 parts. In the central part resides the royal family. While, they have leased out the left and right wings to two five star hotel chains. (Now that’s a royal life indeed! The property doing all the earnings for them)

In the center of the grounds lies a well manicured garden. Across the garden, the boundary wall of the palace is lined with several shops and emporiums. While, near the gate that leads to private section, there is a nice restaurant. We got ample time before our family arrived. Thus, we snapped quiet a few beautiful pictures of the palace and the grounds amidst intermittent phone calls with our family in order to coordinate our latitudes 😀

Inside the City Palace Udaipur

1) the museum of city palace udaipur.

Start your trip from the main entrance inside the city palace udaipur building. And as soon as you enter, a marble Ganesha welcomes you right on the staircase.

City Palace Udaipur 3

From here on, enter into the main museum. It is a vast museum displaying various weaponry , accessories and war paintings. All of these are from the era of the infamous kings that once resided in the kingdom of Udaipur. I found this one of particular interest. Looks like the kings wore a protective cover around his body (which was made of iron) while getting ready for the battle. No weapons, nothing could penetrate this solid protection. But what if the king got an itching inside? Well, this innovative tool was used to sooth his irritation in such scenarios!! It is a hand shaped tool made of marble to give the exact feeling (and stisfaction) of itching by nails!

2) The steep stairs & low height doors

From the museum, we headed to the main portions of the palace. The city palace Udaipur is a multi floor palace. Very steep stairs connect the floors. The door to access the stairs are so small and narrow that even a five foot something with a lean figure (like myself ofcourse) had to be careful while crossing them. Our guide informed us that it was done deliberately due to two reasons : (1) your head bends in respect as you pass through the palace (2) If you are an enemy, who got access to the palace somehow, these stairs will force you to slow down as you pass from chamber to chamber and floor to floor.

City Palace Udaipur 4

3) The Crowning hall

Nevertheless, after crossing the stairs, we arrived at a hall with a marble tub fitted in the ground. Seems the new Kings were crowned here. And, during the ceremony, this tub was filled with silver coins. After the ceremony, the coins were thrown to the people of the state from the jharokhas (windws), who stood in the courtyard below. The people then merrily came forward and collected the coins as a gift from the newly formed king.

4) The Garden

After passing this place, comes a huge courtyard. There is a sprawling garden in the middle of it. And the garden has tall trees as well. There are benches near here to sit. Once we arrived here, our guide quizzed us “can you guess which floor we are on right now?” Looking at the massive trees we guessed it will be ground floor or at max first floor. But, the correct answer was “fourth floor”!! Even while climbing the stairs we didn’t realize we had already climbed four floors…hats off to the architecture of the palace.

5) The beautiful rooms & Jharokhas

From here, we took another steep flight of stairs downwards and arrived at the floor below. There is a small courtyard on this floor. And, a tiny beverage and snacks shop is tugged in one corner of this courtyard. The left hand side of the shop consists of beautiful jharokhas decorated with colorful glass. And, some other beautiful chambers lined up. One of these is the king’s bedroom. This room was constructed in inspiration from the sheesh mahal in Amer. So, it’s floor, wall and ceiling are all mirrors.

City Palace Udaipur 6

Besides this are some other rooms setup as the meeting room, game room etc. to let us visitors know how the setup of the rooms in the palace used to be.

6) Divan – e – Aam

From here, we went further down to the next floor. This is the divan-e-aam area – the king’s administrative assembly place with his ministers to discuss the most important issues. The king sat in a decorated balcony on the first floor. The ministers would sit across him. On the next floor are balconies that were used by the ladies of the royal family to witness the proceedings. This is a part of the palace which has most intricate mirror works. You will see a beautiful peacock made of all small mirror pieces. And some other similar masterpieces. Even the balconies and chambers are painted in multiple colors. Overall I liked this part of the palace the most.

City Palace Udaipur 7

7) The golden sun

Next comes the golden sun on display. It was believed to be an auspicious sun. The king , everyday, started the day with a view of this sun. It is now kept on display inside the palace. (There is a similar sun placed at the front wall of the city palace Udaipur. But that consists of bronze. This was placed for the auspicious views by the public of the kingdom.)

City Palace Udaipur 8

8) Kitchen and other rooms

From here, we crossed through the bathrooms, kitchens and other rooms of the ancient time. One of the kings, it seems, was handicapped. So, he had imported a special chair style toilet seat from London it seems. That is put at display now 🙂 The kitchen consist of earthen wares and other cooking equipment of the ancient times. Crossing all these, we arrived at the the exit gate of the main palace building. I spotted a beautiful bright wall painting near this gate.

City Palace Udaipur 9

9) The imported toilet

Apparantly, one of the kings was handicapped. He was not fit enough to use the typical Indian style toilets. So, a special toilet seat was imported for him all the way from London (Oh! the days of luxury). The seat did cost an enormous sum at that point of time. Now, it is one of the proud displays at the city palace Udaipur. To me, it looked more like a luxurious sofa than a toilet seat. However, now I pass the ball to you. You can judge and let me know what you think of it.

It is a luxurious leather chair with a detachable stool below. The stool is also made of leather. The king was short in height. So, the stool was custom made and attached into the original design of the chair to help him step up and sit on the chair comfortably. There is a pull out tray on the side where a water pot can be kept. Quiet stylish..huh!!

city palace udaipur

10) The false door

There is a lift installed in the palace. To have a lift installed in the days when the palace was built, is a great accomplishment. Besides the lift is a heavy door made of wood. Our guide challenged us to open or move the door. Obviously, we couldn’t. He was watching pleasantly with a conspicious grin on his face. Then after our futile efforts to move the door, he declared that actually the door is false, It is just a fitting into the wall to give an impression of the door. Intrigued, we asked why was it ever placed in the wall then. And the answer was even more funny. It was installed by the king to have some fun with his guests just the way the guide had fun with us !! Hats off to the king for his excellent sense of humor 😀

11) Silver Gallery

Just around the corner from here is the silver gallery. We decided to visit the silver gallery. This gallery has a lot of silver ware at display. These are the silver items that were actually used by the royal household. Overall, there is a huge collection of items big and small. You can see spoons, forks, other kitchen ware, toothpicks, models of airplane, footwear, big water vessels, a huge horse cart, a palki (Carrier) for God idol, a big crib for the royal newborns and numerous other items, all made of silver. Overall it takes around 30 minutes to have a good look all around the silver gallery.

However, the two things that particularly caught my attention were the silver rath and the crib. First being the Rath (chariot), which is placed just near the entrance to the silver gallery. It was created initially for sitting the idols of God when a procession was taken out during the festivals. It would be placed over an elephant and the God seated inside. While the crib can be seen just near the exit. Obviously the crib was made for the royal babies to have a taste of luxury right after they were born 🙂 But must say, both of these represent great work of art, with intricate carvings on them.

city palace udaipur 12

12) Crystal Gallery

We decided to skip the crystal gallery in lieu of time. We proceeded back to the main courtyard and the public entrance. Apart from the above mentioned, there are numerous paintings all over the palace that you will keep coming across while you pass through the rooms of city palace, Udaipur. Some of these are for aesthetic purpose, some others are paintings depicting war scenes or stories of valor from the kings. One painting that particularly intrigued me was the one depicting the complete life story of Maharana Pratap.

Outside the City Palace, Udaipur

It took us around 3.5 hours to complete our visit of the Udaipur city palace. Once we were out of the palace, we decided to exit through the public entrance. There is a government emporium near the main entrance. Before exiting, we visited here. The shop has a good collection of garments and home linen including lightweight quilts, dress materials, sarees etc. We bought some sarees which were made of organic bamboo trees. They are recyclable cloths. And the shop guarantees to take back the product after however days of use you want to. Also, they will refund you 70% of the cloth’s purchase value. And, the best part is, they do shipping all over the world. (You might like to read about our shopping spree in Rajasthan & get some insider tips on getting the best deals )

By the time, we left the city palace, it was afternoon. Thus, obviously hungry, we stopped at a café in the same street for lunch. The sandwiches and pasta at this shop are yummy. After having a nice lunch, we headed next to Bagore ki Haveli. We opted out of eating at the fancy restaurants inside the palace, as they are mostly unnecessarily expensive.

Tips on visiting the city palace Udaipur

  • Good news is, mostly you will be exploring the interiors of the city palace Udaipur. So, for once you need not worry so much about the sun and heat in Rajasthan
  • Keep ample time apart so that you can take your time to explore the palace
  • We would recommend to take a guided tour so that you understand the significance of the places and things that you see. This adds to the interest and excitement.
  • Also, wear comfortable cotton cloths and comfortable walking shoes. There will be a lot of walking to be done.
  • You can take a cab or auto to the City Palace Udaipur and it will drop you right at the entrance.
  • However, be aware that there are two entrances to the City Palace Udaipur – one is a public entrance and we would recommend it. The other one is private entrance that is used by the royal family. Public can enter from this side too but the ticket prices are little extra. Plus, there is a little more walking from this entrance to the main palace building
  • And carry some water. Or else, you can purchase from the shops & restaurants inside the palace grounds.
  • Crystal gallery tickets are additional, and you can purchase them inside the palace.
  • Although Boating at lake pichola is accessible via the palace grounds. However, do note down the timings and plan accordingly if you are interested in boating. Again, the boat tickets will be additinal.

19 Best Things to Do in Udaipur, Rajasthan

Regal City of Lakes and Palaces

visit palace udaipur

aladin66 /Getty Images

Udaipur, Rajasthan's "white city", is often called the most romantic city in India because of its famed lakes and palaces. Therefore, it's only natural that they feature prominently in the top things to do in Udaipur. Experiencing Udaipur is all about reliving royalty and appreciating the city's regal beauty.

Check out these places to see around Udaipur too. There are many interesting day trips and side trips to go on. If you don't mind the heat, try and catch Udaipur's biggest festival, Gangaur, in March or April (it happens a couple of weeks after Holi each year). The Mewar Festival is held alongside it and celebrates the region's culture.

Explore the City Palace Complex

Elena Odareeva/Getty Images

How did Rajasthan's royal rulers survive after India became a democracy and their states merged into the Union of India? They converted their palaces into hotels and tourist attractions in order to generate an income. Udaipur's City Palace Complex , belonging to the Mewar royal family, really sets the standard as far as such heritage tourism is concerned. This all-encompassing destination incorporates two authentic palace hotels (see below) and the City Palace Museum . Plus, a collection of vintage cars and Jag Mandir, a pleasure palace on an island in the middle of Lake Pichola. It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan.

Wander Through Bagore Ki Haveli

Bagore Ki Haveli provides a further fascinating look into the lifestyle of the royal family and culture of the region. This sprawling mansion, built in the 18th century on the edge of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat (where you can sit by the water), was once the residence of the Prime Minister of Mewar. It was converted to a museum after five years of restoration work in the late 1980s and is a joy to wander through. Inside there are more than 100 rooms, courtyards, and terraces, many with beautiful frescoes and fine mirror work. Royal paintings, costumes of the kings, personal items, and traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts are on display. There's also a puppet gallery and turban collection with the world's biggest turban. The Haveli is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A folk dance performance and puppet show is held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Boat on Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake

Zzvet/Getty Images

Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake (to the north of Lake Pichola and connected by a canal) are the most popular of Udaipur's man-made lakes. A boat ride on Lake Pichola gives a whole new perspective on the city, especially the City Palace Complex. There are a couple of options, depending on what you want to see and how much you're prepared to spend. To visit Jagmandir Island, you'll need to take one of the boats that depart from Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace gardens (a small fee is payable to enter the City Palace if you're not staying at a hotel there). Tickets cost 500 rupees per person for the regular boat ride during the day, and 800 rupees per person for the sunset boat ride. Cheaper public boat rides depart from the jetty at Lal Ghat. A lesser-known option is to get a boat from Dudh Talai adjacent to Lake Pichola. You can explore Fateh Sagar Lake by renting a boat from the bottom of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill).

Soak Up the View from a Rooftop

pawopa3336/Getty Images

The numerous rooftop restaurants on Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat and Hanuman Ghat provide a fabulous panorama of Lake Pichola. For something special, including a superb view of the the City Palace, head to Upre by 1559 A.D. atop the Lake Pichola Hotel near Hanuman Ghat. On the other side of the lake, Sun and Moon Restaurant on the rooftop of Hotel Udai Niwas at Gangaur Ghat is sought-after for its view. At Lal Ghat, try the rooftop restaurant at Jaiwana Haveli or Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel .

Watch the Sunset at Ambrai Ghat

Udaipur has many vantage points for photography but arguably the best one is Ambrai Ghat, especially at sunset. It's located directly opposite the City Palace and also fronts the Lake Palace hotel, so you have an unsurpassed view of both as their lights are turned on. To get there, head to the Hanuman Ghat area and keep walking along the road that runs parallel to Lake Pichola as far as you can, past the Amet Haveli hotel and Ambrai restaurant. Do be aware that Ambrai Ghat is a popular local hangout for couples. (Of course, locals know the most romantic spot with the best views in the city!)

Visit Jagdish Temple

This imposing white Hindu temple, with intricate architecture and carvings, is an unmissable landmark in the Lal Ghat area near the entrance to the City Palace. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1961 and houses a black stone idol of Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who's regarded as the preserver of the universe in Hinduism. The highlight here is the evocative aarti (worship ceremony) every sunrise and sunset.

Take a Heritage Walking Tour

TkKurikawa/Getty Images

A heritage walk through the streets of Udaipur is a great way to immerse yourself in the City of Lakes and Palaces. The Walk Down Memory Lane tour conducted by Walk and Pedal is one of the best. You'll get to see goldsmiths at work, witness temple rituals, visit quaint shops selling everything from shoes to books, and enjoy panoramic city views. Also check out the dawn and dusk tours conducted by Vintage Walking Tours . In addition, this insightful Udaipur Heritage Walk offered by Virasat Experiences is recommended for engaging with local artisans. It provides an opportunity to meet communities that make jewelry, pottery, and bamboo craft. You'll learn about local traditions, customs, and beliefs too.

Stay at an Authentic Palace Hotel

Blaine Harrington III/Getty Images

Udaipur's mystical Lake Palace hotel appears to float in the middle of Lake Pichola. It was built by the Maharanas of Mewar as a pleasure palace in the 18th century. The royal family restored and converted it into a palace hotel in 1963, and then leased it out to the luxury Taj hotel group in 1971, as a way to maintain it. A further restoration was undertaken in 2000, making the property one of the finest heritage hotels in India. It has even had a Hollywood moment when scenes from the famous James Bond Octopussy movie were filmed there. The only way to visit the hotel is to stay at it, so splurge and treat yourself to at least one night of indulgence! The Taj group recently took over the management of the Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel , inside the City Palace Complex, too. The other option for an authentic palace stay is the Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel . It also features in Octopussy.

The Rajput rulers of the Mewar region, who founded Udaipur, were avid hunters. Meat-based dishes are therefore a feature of Mewari-cuisine, in contrast to predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani food. Laal maas (red mutton curry) is an iconic Mewari dish that's fiery hot. Apparently, the royal cooks spiced it up to hide the aroma of the game meat that was used at the time. The dish has a prominent place on the menus of restaurants that serve Mewari food in Udaipur including Hari Ghar , Khamma Ghani , Upre , Ambrai , and Paantya at the City Palace. In addition, the Bedla family serve recipes that have been handed down over generations at their heritage restaurant Royal Repast , located in their home.

Take an Indian Cooking Class

Corey O'Hara/Getty Images

Udaipur is a fantastic place to expand your culinary skills by taking an Indian cooking lesson. You'll learn all about the different spices and secrets to preparing Indian food. Sashi's cooking classes are among the most popular. She has a reputation for being a friendly and lively teacher, and she conducts introductory classes twice a day with her son at her place at Gangaur Ghat. Mamta's cooking classes are recommended too. She offers four different menus, ranging from basic to super deluxe. The classes take place for lunch and dinner daily near Chandpole. Alternatively, Sushma provides cooking classes at the Krishna Niwas Guesthouse at Lal Ghat. You can choose the individual dishes you want to prepare. The extensive options include north and south Indian dishes, Rajasthani classics, and desserts.

Get a Dose of Culture and Shop at Shilpgram

Olmoroz/Getty Images

Shilpgram (meaning "craftsmen's village") is a rural arts and crafts complex, located on the outskirts of Udaipur. It was set up by the government in 1986 to showcase rural life and traditions from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa. The complex has huts from each of the states, incorporating their distinctive architectural features. Artisans also sell their wares and perform folk dances. Horse rides and camel rides are offered as well. The complex really comes alive during the 10-day Shilpgram Arts & Crafts Fair in late December.

Buy Art or Make Your Own

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

Udaipur is renowned for its traditional art, particularly the colorful miniature paintings that originated there in the 16th century. A recommended place to buy them is Gothwal Art near Gangaur Ghat. The lovely owners of this gallery are artists themselves and prices are very reasonable. It's possible to learn the technique by participating in a workshop, such as the ones offered by Vedic Walks . Jal Sanjhi is another rare 200 year-old art form that can be learned in this painting demonstration . It involves painting on water and is a tribute to Lord Krishna. If you're interested in other types of art and handicrafts, this Spirit of Art tour comprises visits to a block printing center and book binding shop, painting demonstration, and sword making demonstration.

Give Some Love to Rescued Street Animals

Animal Aid Unlimited

Animal Aid Unlimited runs one of India's busiest street animal rescue services and hospitals. More than 75,000 animals have been treated there since the organization was founded in 2002. The sanctuary is home to about 150 animals including cows, donkeys, dogs, and cats. It's a happy place that encourages and welcomes visitors. You'll be able to play with and comfort the animals, and receive a whole lot of love back from them. Tours take place throughout the day at the following times: 10.30 a.m., noon, 2.30 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

Ride Around Udaipur on a Bicycle

Wade Andrew/Getty Images

Feeling energetic? The Art of Bicycle Trips introduced bicycle tours in Udaipur in 2013 and they've become a popular way of seeing the city. Their three-hour lakeside city loop will take you through the countryside past the major lakes (Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Badi), mountains and small rural hamlets. On the way, you'll be able to spot various birds and animals. The tour runs daily from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and costs 2,000 rupees per person.

See the Cenotaphs of the Royal Family

prill/Getty Images

Off-the-beaten-track yet just east of the city center, the Ahar cenotaphs honor deceased members of the Mewar royal family. There are 372 white marble cenotaphs that have been constructed over centuries at the place where the bodies were cremated. About 20 of them belong to past kings and hold great significance. The site also has a holy step well, and small archeological museum that's dedicated to ancient settlers of the area.

Relax in Udaipur's Regal Garden

Guillaume CHANSON/Getty Images

Continue tracing the heritage of the Mewar royal family at Saheliyon ki Bari (Courtyard of Maidens), which was built by Maharana Sangram Singh -- popularly known as Rana Sanga -- next to Fateh Sagar Lake in the 18th century. This elegant garden served as a recreation space for the royal ladies. It's filled with a lotus ponds, sculptures, marble pavilions, fountains, trees, and more than 100 rose bushes. The impressive cascading rain fountains were added by Maharana Bhupal Singh in the late 19th century and imported from England. These days, the garden attracts many local families, and young canoodling couples who aim to get privacy away from prying eyes.

Admire the View from Monsoon Palace

The Monsoon Palace (also known as Sajjan Garh) can be seen from Udaipur, perched high on a hill above the city. As its name suggests, it was a favored destination of the royal family during the monsoon season. The palace belonged to the Mewar royal family until it was placed in government hands. Despite its dilapidated condition, it's a popular sunset spot due to its unsurpassed view over Udaipur. Those who are familiar with James Bond's Octopussy movie will also recognize the palace as the home of the principal villain, Kamal Khan. The drive to the palace takes around 30 minutes and passes through Sajjan Garh Wildlife Sanctuary Biological Park. Auto rickshaws aren't allowed to enter the park. So, it's best to rent a car or take the special minivan that departs from the entrance to Bagore ki Haveli at 5 p.m. daily.

Get Wild at Sajjangarh Biological Park

Veena Nair/Getty Images

Sajjangarh Biological Park surrounds the Monsoon Palace and can be visited on the way. The main attractions are trekking trails and a zoo. As far as zoos in India go, it's not bad, with spacious enclosures spread over a wide area. Electric golf carts can be rented to see all of it at a cost of 50 rupees per person, or 400 rupees for a private cart. There are about 20 types of animals and reptiles including lions, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, deer, ostrich, porcupines and turtles. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Tuesdays. Entry tickets cost 35 rupees per person for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. Do be aware that many of the animals sleep during the day, so it's best to visit after 4 p.m. You'll probably want to give it a miss if you don't have children though.

Ride the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

Nicole Silvestri/Getty Images

Red cable cars ferry sightseers on short trips (five minutes one-way) up the hill from Deen Dayal Park at Dudh Talai to Karni Mata temple . There's a viewing platform there, and it's another notable location for seeing the sunset over the city. Do be aware that the line and waiting time to buy tickets can be lengthy. Tickets cost about 100 rupees, round trip, for adults. There's an option to pay more to skip the line, which is highly recommended.

The India food tour that made me reconnect with my ancestry

During our writer’s tour of the country’s kitchens she got to know the many varied charms of her grandparents’ home via its food — and meaningful connections with strangers.

Lake Pichola in Udaipur

M irrors abound in India; not only in sringara, mirror-holding iconography in art, but also in abla or shisha, the circles of reflective glass used in embroidery. They glint off women paying devotions at the temples, gleam from shops stacked with brightly coloured saris, cholis and salwar kameezes, and entice from stores, dazzling with bangles and bindis. In Gujarat they adorn the walls of rural mud houses in an art form called lippan. Everywhere they are hung from doorways to blind the evil eye and repel ill fortune. However, after a few days in India, I was not at all convinced that they are ever used when driving.

I’d learnt about sringara from the art curator Gautami Raju, who had guided me through the impressive collection at the peaceful Leela Palace hotel in New Delhi. One painting by the Indian artist Shipra Bhattacharya particularly struck me. It depicts the back view of a woman, her face just visible in the mirror she’s holding.

From the hotel the city seemed very far away. Only when I swam in the rooftop infinity pool and gazed out at a view obscured by smog, or saw vultures hunched on distant chimneys, was I reminded that it was there at all.

Staying at the Leela was my soft launch into India, a country I’d never visited despite travelling extensively in neighbouring Nepal. But after discovering recently, thanks to an unfiltered remark from a relative, how deeply rooted it is in my DNA, I’d felt compelled to come. My great-grandparents had been indentured labourers, shipped from their homes in the northern states and Nepal to Fiji; homes to which they would never return, and it’s only recently that I have started to piece together their story. While travelling in Nepal, I was frequently told that I had a “good face, a Nepalese face”, something I cynically attributed to sales shtick. Now, I wonder whether there was something in it.

The rooftop infinity pool at Leela Palace

After two nights in the cocooning Leela, I was reluctant but excited to join a group of eight strangers on an Intrepid Travel Real Food adventure, which started in Delhi and ended 15 days later in Goa. Learning about food has always seemed, to me, to be a fast track to learning about people and culture, and, as the tour was to take us into real households, meeting real families, I suspected that I’d get more of a sense of identity than I would visiting monuments (though of course we would be doing the most famous ones).

Having arrived in my new, more basic, hotel, I steeled myself to explore alone, starting with the utter chaos of a Delhi street. A man approached me, speaking Hindi. “But you are from here, no?” he said, puzzled by my politely blank face.

That night, our guide, Bhagirath, talked us through what the coming weeks held (“You will leave India 2kg heavier,” he joked, patting his stomach). Most of our transfers would be by road, except for an overnight sleeper train from Udaipur to Mumbai and a flight from Mumbai to Goa. All of the group expressed an interest in Indian food for food’s sake. None of them were on a seemingly impossible personal quest in an impenetrable country with nothing but a photo of their grandparents and a few anecdotes to go by.

Sarah Rodrigues in Old Delhi

That said, their enthusiasm ebbed and flowed. “I mean, just once it would be nice to eat a vegetable that isn’t cooked,” one of the group muttered. That was on day five. By day 11, taste buds crackling for McDonald’s, she and her companion finally succumbed and had Big Macs delivered to their Mumbai hotel.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the self-searching nature of my visit, it was the women who proved most fascinating for me at every destination. Their jewel-like saris, the colours brilliant no matter the age of the wearer. The vermillion sindoor, placed in the hair’s central parting to denote marriage. Their careful inspection of produce at the markets as they leant down to inspect okra, often with a toddler balanced on one hip. The easy camaraderie between the female in-laws who hosted us for dinner and expressed genuine joy in their life of service to their family.

Not a recipe book was in sight in the kitchens we entered, but each housewife proudly showed her masala dabba, or spice tin, in which essential flavours — cumin, turmeric, garam masala, mustard seeds — were stored. I marvelled at the speed with which they shaped and formed rotis, puffing them up by placing them over heat.

In Delhi we had the humbling experience of entering a Sikh temple where, in stark contrast to the rigid demarcations of the caste system, everyone, regardless of religion, race or gender, is welcome to eat free food prepared by a vast team of volunteers. Here the women, their heads covered, flanked a low table rolling out vast quantities of chapatis without even looking at what their hands were doing. I imagined my grandmother and great-grandmother. What colours would they have worn? What would they have cooked? Would they have haggled with charm or with gunfire curtness?

Food was a focal point of the trip

India left me with a series of impressions. In Jaipur it was of a smoggy hubbub. An impending visit from the prime minister, Narendra Modi, engulfed the city’s famous pink in diesel exhaust fumes as roads were closed and diverted traffic ground to a standstill. We stood, dazed, on a street corner, leaning against a wall of sound something like the bleating of mutant goats. The call to prayer from a nearby mosque added to the noise.

• India travel guide: What to do, where to stay and why you’ll love it

At the Taj Mahal, as tourists held phones aloft, capturing selfies with the monument in the background, I was reminded of Bhattacharya’s painting. In the central chamber signs forbid photography, yet visitors persisted in sneaking shots of themselves in front of the empty tombs — one so hulking, the other so tiny — while guardsmen blasted their piercing whistles in rebuke. “Rest in peace? Hmm,” my new friend Hayley muttered.

Mirrors are here too: the Taj reflected in its pool, the perfect symmetry of its structure, and even the tourists trying to recreate Princess Diana’s 1992 photo. They are also in the Sheesh Mahal (Glass Palace) at Jaipur’s Amber Fort, which glitters with thousands of shards of reflective glass embedded in every surface.

The Sheesh Mahal, also known as the glass palace, which has thousands of shards of glass embedded in its surface

Despite all this beauty, it’s the people that have remained with me. On a sunrise hot-air balloon ride outside Jaipur, children ran towards us from every direction as our basket drifted down to land. In Bijaipur a lotus-legged man, sifting through the yield of the peanut harvest, smilingly pressed fistfuls of kernels upon us, in spite of the contrast between our well-fed frames and his leanness.

In Udaipur, the lakeside city in which shorefront lights quivered in the water, I’d been startled by a photo of a man who looked uncannily like my grandfather. Peering closer, I read that he was the former king of Nepal, whose son and family were massacred by his grandson shortly before my 2001 visit to the country. My group teased me about my “royal lineage”, while Bhagirath provided me with useful keys to my (nonroyal, I hasten to add) ancestry, pointing me in the direction of books I could read and what caste I likely belonged to, based on my family name and appearance.

There was a collective nervousness about the overnight sleeper train, with preboarding discussions ranging from safety and lavatory use — two of the group refused to eat or drink for several hours before the journey in an attempt to avoid the need for a bathroom — to cleanliness and privacy. With mixed-sex carriages, four beds to a cubicle separated from the aisle by nothing but a rough curtain, I worried I’d be kept awake by snoring, loud conversations and hawkers.

• A Rajasthan road trip shows off India at its most magical

Perhaps I’ve inherited my ability to sleep through such disruptions from my Indian forebears, because only in the morning did I stir to the chant “chai, coffee, chaaaaiiiiii”. A gap in my cubicle’s curtain revealed a young girl, her gaze fixed seriously on me and her hair in two tight plaits, as mine used to be.

On our last night together, in Goa, we poured thanks on Bhagirath. Having a guide to deal with the intricacies of ordering, tipping and etiquette had been invaluable, and he’d done it all with impish charm, encyclopaedic knowledge and spellbinding storytelling.

A woman selling food in Udaipur

We’d greeted — and been greeted — with “namaste” since our arrival. Accompanied by prayer palms, it denotes respect to another as an inhabitant of a shared world. “Namaste says that ‘the light in me greets the light in you’. We reflect one another,” Bhagirath said. “We’ve eaten together, shared stories and laughed together, and during our time together, in each of you, I have recognised something of myself.” Strangers two weeks ago, we now felt connected.

The following day the group dispersed, travelling on earlier flights than mine. I was on the beach, homesick for my children, when I noticed a little girl sifting sand. Our eyes met. I made a face; she copied it. I made another, and she copied me again. Soon we were building sandcastles, studded with discarded bottle tops.

• This is India’s most exciting city right now

I didn’t leave India 2kg heavier, and I may not ever pin down my ancestry with any certainty. Yet what I experienced there goes far beyond my own identity-driven pond-dipping into inscrutable pasts, and explains the country’s enduring appeal for travellers. Where else can you see the whole of the world, in all of its beauty, ugliness, kindness, cruelty, order, chaos, grandeur and squalor, in the space of a day? India is cacophonous and confusing, but so is life. Time and again here I came face to face with myself, and with my own desires, dislikes, preconceptions and prejudices. Like nowhere else, India reminds you that everywhere you go, there you are.
