Virtual Physicians at HealthLink BC
HealthLink BC’s virtual physicians provide confidential health information and advice. HealthLink BC’s virtual physicians are doctors from across British Columbia. They can help you stay healthy, get better, manage chronic conditions and seek further treatment, if needed.
HealthLink BC virtual physicians are available to 8-1-1 callers after assessment by one of our registered nurses. If the nurse determines that further medical assessment by a doctor would help you get the best advice on when and where you should seek care, they may refer you to your family doctor or nurse practitioner, a health provider in your community or one of our virtual physicians.
8-1-1 virtual physician consults are available by phone or by video.
Virtual Physician by Phone
If you have been referred to a virtual physician and would like to speak to the doctor by phone, one of our medical office assistants will work with you to schedule a telephone consult with a physician. Before ending the call with 8-1-1 , the assistant will find out what the best day and time is for the physician to call you and confirm your contact information. At the time of our appointment, the physician will call you directly.
Here are some helpful tips for your telephone consult:
- Choose distraction-free, private location
- Have a pen and paper ready to take notes
- Ensure your device is charged
When you receive the Zoom call from the doctor for your consultation or follow-up, it may come from an area code such as 646 or 212 or another North American city like New York. Our doctors live and work in British Columbia but a Zoom call may be routed through any city where Zoom operates. Please be assured your personal information remains in Canada.
Virtual Physicians by Video
If you have been referred to a virtual physician and would like to speak to the doctor by video, one of our medical office assistants will work with you to schedule a video consult with a doctor. Before ending the call with 8-1-1 , the assistant will find out what the best day and time for the doctor to video you and confirm your contact details. You will also receive an email with a Zoom meeting link, and instructions on how to set up and be ready for the Zoom video consult.
Set up the meeting before your video consult
Install the Zoom app on your device. You can skip this step if you already have Zoom installed.
- From a PC or Mac click or tap join from your browser link to test your audio and video connection
- From an iOS or Android device go to Google Play/Apple Store to download and install the Zoom app, then click or tap the Join a Test Meeting link to test your audio and video connection
Test the Zoom app on your device
- From an iOS or Android device go to Google Play/Apple Store to download & install the Zoom app, then click or tap the Join a Test Meeting link to test your audio and video connection
If Zoom is not working, refer to the Zoom Computer or Zoom Mobile requirements.
To join the video consult
- Click on the Zoom Meeting link in the email
- The doctor will call you at the scheduled consult time and provide a unique code to enter into Zoom. Entering this code will admit you to the consult. You may also hear from the medical office assistant to confirm you are ready
- Click the Join Audio and Start Video icons
- You will be placed in a virtual waiting room until the physician admits you into the video consult
- In the video consult, to mute or unmute your microphone or to start or stop your video, click on the icons located in the bottom left corner of your screen. When clicked or tapped, the microphone icon will mute and unmute sounds, and the video icon will turn on and off your camera
- If at any time during a video consult you feel uncomfortable, let the physician know and we can contact you by phone or refer you to services in your community
- When your consult is over, visit the HealthLink BC 8-1-1 Virtual Physician Service Survey: Your Experience to share your feedback. The survey will take just 5 minutes and help improve the experience for future 8-1-1 callers
Here are some helpful tips for getting ready for your video consult:
- Choose a well-lit, distraction-free, private location
- Ensure your mobile device is charged
- If available, use a wired connection to the internet or Wi-Fi to avoid extra data charges
Take these steps to make sure your video consult is secure
Your privacy is important to us. Similar to a face-to-face visit, your identity will be confirmed and your information will be kept confidential. Visits will not be recorded. We confirm your email before sending you the Video Consult invitation.
There are also a few safe online practices you can do to help ensure your consult is secure:
- Use password protected Wi-Fi, not public Wi-Fi
- Use anti-malware and antivirus software
- Download applications only from trusted sources
- Ensure your Zoom application is up-to-date
We use a healthcare version of Zoom that is compliant with Province of British Columbia privacy laws. Servers are located in Canada to ensure data stays in Canada. Audio, video and messages are encrypted and the application is configured to ensure security best practices are followed. Last updated: December 8, 2020

B.C.’s doctors are now available to provide care to patients using telephone or video during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to providing in-person care when necessary.
The increased use of virtual care allows patients to receive medical care from their own doctor while practicing physical distancing or self-isolation. It protects not only patients, but also their doctors so they can continue to treat patients during the virus outbreak.
Dr. Ross urges patients to call their doctor first when they need medical care. “Although the virus is top of mind right now, people still need ongoing care and advice for acute or chronic conditions requiring treatment or medication,” she said.
“There is a misconception that patients shouldn’t contact their doctors for routine appointments or non-COVID-19 related illness right now—absolutely they should,” she added.
Family physicians will also continue to refer patients to specialists as needed.
For seniors living at home, those with disabilities, or people considering themselves to be high-risk, it is especially important that they contact their doctor for advice if they have not already connected.
Doctors will let their patients know if an in-person visit is needed, and their staff will follow up to make arrangements.
Things patients should know to get started:
Doctors are not seeing people in-person as much as usual, but they are still booking appointments, even though they will be different than what patients are used to.
Patients should call their doctor’s office just as they normally would. Medical office staff will book the appointment and tell you how to prepare for the telephone call or video conference. Some doctors’ offices have online booking systems, as well.
Patients should not arrive at their doctor’s office without phoning first.
The virtual appointment is covered by MSP like any visit with the doctor. There is no additional cost for the service.
Benefits of virtual care appointments:
Reduces risk of transmission of COVID-19 for both patient and doctor.
People can see their own doctor from the safety of their home.
Increased accessibility to care for patients with disabilities, mobility challenges, and for those who live in remote communities.

This is the way of the future. My doctor told me about virtual care and I will never look back. I was able to renew my prescription while on my couch and in only 3 minutes!

I am currently out of province and needed to see a doctor, but am too sick to get out of bed! I had a wonderful experience with Tia Health and will definitely be using their service again. I was able to book an appointment within an hour. The service was free with my BC health card. I only had to pay for the sick note that I requested.

Need a family doctor look no further..
We know how hard it is for patients to find a family doctor in Ontario. This is why MD Connected has created a new family practice to provide you with the access you need when you need it. Become a rostered patient with MD Connected by first registering yourself and your family to our family practice enrolment list. Once enrolled, we will contact you to determine eligibility and if eligible schedule a meet and greet with one of our friendly family doctors.
OHIP funding cuts reducing virtual care
Effective December 1st, 2022, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) and the Ontario Ministry of Health are reducing funding provided to virtual care services by over 50%. This will negatively impact your access to virtual care. In response to the changes to OHIP coverage for virtual care, MD Connected is changing its service model.
Receive premium benefits with MD Enhanced Care
MD Connected has developed a low-cost healthcare program that provides enhanced health care services when you and your family need them. Our new membership program includes several new premium benefits and starts as low as $15 per month for you and all of your dependents.
ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ONTARIO PATIENTS: OHIP Funding Cuts
Effective December 1st, 2022, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) and the Ontario Minstry of Health have reduced funding provided for virtual primary care and urgent care services. The impact to Ontarians is simply less access to healthcare services.
In response to these changes, MD Connected has been preparing a new model of service to continue to provide virtual healthcare to our patients. We believe in what we do for our communities and do not support the unsustainable fee cuts made by the Ontario government.
Unfortunately, effective January 1, 2023, we will no longer be able to provide OHIP covered video consultations through virtual care. However, we will continue to connect with patients through secure chat appointment.

Online Prescriptions from Online Doctors
Walk In’s team of online doctors can assess and treat many minor or non-urgent issues through our fast and easy-to-use virtual care platform . Sometimes, this involves writing a prescription medication so that you can recover or stay healthy.
Our doctors will take a medical history, virtually examine you, and decide if a medication is necessary. Prescribing is always up to the discretion and medical judgment of the treating online physician.
Pick Up Your Prescription or Have it Delivered
No more running around the town or long waits at the pharmacy. After consultation with one of Walk In’s virtual care clinic doctors, they can send your prescription to your local pharmacy or have the pharmacy deliver it for free to your home – you decide. This is healthcare on your terms.
When going to the pharmacy, remember to bring your government-issued ID and care card so that the pharmacist can release your medication to you. If you have any questions regarding your medication, please discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.
Awkward Conversations About Medications? Not With Us
Walk In understands that you might have concerns that might feel awkward to speak about with someone in person. That is why our British Columbia online doctors take pride in delivering non-judgmental and patient-centered care from the privacy of your home. We encourage open and honest dialogue so that we can help you to feel better.
The doctors on our virtual care platform have experience prescribing for common conditions such as acne, hair loss, or erectile dysfunction. Book an online medical consultation with one of our doctors today to learn more. And if you need a doctor’s note online we can provide those as well.
Common Medications Are Available Through Telehealth
If medically indicated, our team of virtual doctors can prescribe a range of medications online. The medications can be faxed to a local pharmacy or delivered by a pharmacy to your door, at no added cost.
Please note: Walk In is not a pharmaceutical manufacturer, nor are we an online pharmacy.

Here are a few commonly asked questions about online prescriptions in BC.
Can I Use Walk In To Get A Prescription Online
Yes, you can use Walk In’s virtual care platform to connect with a Canadian-licensed physician to obtain a prescription. Prescribing is up to the discretion and medical judgment of the doctor, however. Our team of physicians can send the prescription to your local pharmacy or have the pharmacy deliver it to you for free. After your virtual consultation with the doctor, they decide whether or not a prescription is indicated for your condition. Prescriptions can be faxed directly to a pharmacy of your choice or a pharmacy can deliver them to your door-step for free.
What Kind of Prescriptions Can I Get Online
Many doctors feel comfortable prescribing routine prescriptions online (such as prescriptions for non-severe conditions like acne or seasonal allergies). If you need refills for a previously filled medication (such as birth control or thyroid medication), our online doctors may provide you with refills that can be sent to a local pharmacy. For some chronic or severe conditions, you may need to get your prescription from a regular healthcare provider, such as a family doctor or a specialist. They are also able to provide online doctor’s notes when necessary. Our doctors cannot fill any controlled prescriptions such as narcotics, benzodiazepines, sedatives, or stimulants.
Can I Take My Prescription To An In-Person Pharmacy
Absolutely, you can always take a prescription that you received online to an in-person pharmacy. Our doctors can also directly fax it to a pharmacy of your choice. When booking, simply select the pharmacy that you usually go to or one that is nearest to you.
How Do I Find An Online Pharmacy?
In Canada, pharmacies (including those online) are regulated by the pharmacy regulatory authority in the province or territory in which they are located. You can verify if an online pharmacy is legitimate by looking up the pharmacy through the website of the provincial pharmacists regulatory authority to confirm that they are licensed. Never fill a prescription with a suspicious-looking or unverified website online.
Are My Prescriptions Covered?
Prescriptions are not covered under MSP. They may be covered if you have Extended Health Benefits. Some prescriptions can be covered under the Fair PharmaCare plan once your deductible is met. Other prescriptions are covered under a program called Special Authority. Make sure to ask your pharmacist or physician about this plan. You can apply for it here .
Are travel related visits covered under MSP?
Unfortunately travel related visits are not covered under MSP. Any visit related to travel concerns, including vaccination requests, would be billed on a private basis. Not all physicians on Walk In provide travel related care. Please contact us prior to booking a travel related visit.
