What is the Electronic Visa Update System (EVUS)?

EVUS is the online system used by nationals of China holding a 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 (visitor) visa periodically to update basic biographic information to facilitate their travel to the United States. In addition to a valid visa, such travelers will be required to complete an EVUS enrollment to be admitted into the United States.

On what date will an EVUS enrollment become mandatory?

On November 29, 2016, all individuals carrying maximum validity (10-year) B1/B2, B1, and B2 visas in passports issued by the People’s Republic of China must have a valid EVUS enrollment in order to travel to the United States. Travelers who are subject to EVUS requirements but do not have valid enrollments will not be able to obtain a boarding pass or enter through a land port of entry.

How much does EVUS cost?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will not collect a fee for an EVUS enrollment when the website opens for early enrollments. CBP anticipates an EVUS enrollment fee will eventually be implemented, but there is currently no time frame for when the fee will be imposed. Until the fee is implemented, travelers can complete their EVUS enrollment without charge.

What do I need in order to enroll in EVUS?

Will EVUS enrollment be required for admittance into the United States?

Starting on November 29, 2016, yes. The Governments of the United States and China entered into an arrangement on a reciprocal basis, to issue visitor visas with 10-year validity. The arrangement recognized that travelers would be required to periodically complete an online form updating their biographical information. Completing this form will help facilitate the admission of Chinese travelers into the United States.

This requirement is new. The U.S. Government expects that this requirement may be applied to additional countries in the future.

Will this affect current visa holders, new applicants, or both?

Both. Applicants who are holding valid 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 visas issued before November 29, 2016 will have to enroll in EVUS to use their visas any time after the launch of the program. Applicants who receive 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 visas from November 29, 2016 onwards will have to enroll before their initial trip to the United States. Enrollment for all applicants will remain valid for two years or until the traveler’s visa or passport expire, whichever comes first. The visa holders will then have to update their information before traveling to the U.S. again.

I just received a 10-year B1/B2 visa a few months ago. Will I need to obtain a new visa after I enroll in EVUS?

No, your visa remains valid. However, you will be unable to travel to the United States after November 29, 2016 unless you have also enrolled in EVUS. Enrollment in EVUS is separate from the visa application process.

No. EVUS will not require the traveler to submit a photograph or fingerprints. This update will require the traveler to answer a series of questions about himself/herself, and his/her job, background and travel history/destination.

Are the EVUS enrollment questions the same as those on the DS-160 visa application?

There are a number of things that could be causing you problems. Please ensure that your computer meets the minimum configuration requirements.

The minimum computer configuration requirement for enrolling for EVUS is an internet browser that supports 128-bit encryption and is able to accept cookies, and has JavaScript enabled.

If your computer meets the minimum configuration requirements and you are still having technical problems, then this could be a web browser or fire wall problem. Check your internet security settings - if they are set too high, they may be blocking access to the EVUS web site. If that doesn't work try enrolling from another browser/computer. Finally, some ISPs may be blocked due to spam concerns, and you may have to contact your local internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.

If the system will not let you go to the next page, the system may have found an error in a required field (such as an invalid Character, skipped a field, etc.) You will not be allowed to continue until these errors have been corrected. If a mandatory field (indicated by a red *) is not filled in properly, the system will continually return you to the current page.

If your computer freezes up and will not let you continue, the problem is most likely with your browser or your computer capacity. You may need to use a different computer.

Yes. Starting on November 29, 2016, U.S. immigration regulations will require that all People’s Republic of China passport holders carrying 10-year B1/B2, B1, or B2 visas must have a valid EVUS enrollment before traveling to the United States. It does not matter when your visa was issued. Once the system is able to accept enrollments, you will be able to enroll at any time prior to your departure.

Can I update my personal information right before I travel to the United States? If I don’t have a plan to travel to the United States within two years, do I still need to update it?

Once the system is available, any traveler who plans to travel to the United States after November 29, 2016 must have a valid EVUS enrollment before traveling, including before arriving at the airport. Travelers whose valid visas are in expired passports can enter their valid visa information as well as their new passport information to complete an EVUS enrollment. You do not have to obtain a new visa if you are entering new passport information.

After I pressed “submit,” I received an “unsuccessful enrollment” response. Should I try to re-enroll right away?

No. If you receive an “unsuccessful enrollment” response, do not attempt to enroll again for at least 24 hours. Instead, please review information on CBP.gov/evus or contact the EVUS Call Center at 00-1-202-325-0180 or via email [email protected] .

My EVUS enrollment was successful, but it is not valid for two years. Is this an error?

No. The United States requires visitors to have a passport with at least six-months remaining validity for entry into the country. As such, an EVUS enrollment will expire six months before the expiration of a traveler’s passport, as that passport would no longer be valid for travel to the United States.

The system says I have enrolled. Will I receive an email or a text confirmation?

Q:  What are the benefits of the visa validity extension?  

U.S. and Chinese citizens who regularly travel back and forth between the U.S. and China will benefit from the longer validity by not having to apply and pay the application fee every year.  Businesses in both countries, including the tourism industry, will benefit from increased travel, investment, and business development opportunities between the two countries.  Longer visa validity will allow students and exchange visitors to return to their home countries during school and work holidays more easily.  

Q:  Will these changes in visa validity affect fees?

There will be no change in visa application fees.  The basic visa fee of 160 USD includes appointment scheduling and passport delivery services.  Visa information is available free both online at www.ustraveldocs.com and through the Call Center.  Fees can be paid by debit card online, at any CITIC ATM, or in cash at a CITIC branch.  Applicants can pick up their passports at any of 800 CITIC bank branches.  

Q:  Will these changes affect processing times?

We expect that these changes in visa validity will be very popular among Chinese travelers. The U.S. Mission in China is taking steps to handle a potential increase in visa workload and intends to keep visa processing times as short as they have been over the past several years.  

Q:  Will changes in visa validity have any effect on visa eligibility?

The same standards of eligibility for a U.S. visa will apply as before this extension in validity.  

Q:  Will applicants with previous visas still be eligible to apply for visa renewal via the Interview Waiver Program?

The Interview Waiver Program (IWP) remains a valuable tool to many visa holders who wish to renew visas.  A great majority of current tourist, business visitor, student, and exchange visitor nonimmigrant visa holders will remain eligible for IWP processing.   More information on IWP processing can be found at www.ustraveldocs.com . 

Q:  Will these changes in visa validity affect visa applications subject to administrative processing?

Changes in visa validity will not change the requirement that some applications will need additional administrative processing.  As is true in all visa cases, when administrative processing is required, visa validity may vary based on individual circumstances of each case. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visa, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Q:  Will the increased visa validity allow me to stay longer in the United States?

It is important to note that visa validity is NOT the same as the allowed duration of stay.  A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port of entry where a Customs and Border Protection officer will grant admission to valid travelers.  In doing so, the officer will inform the traveler of the permitted length of stay.    The current change in visa validity does NOT change the permitted duration of stay for any visa class.  Remaining in the United States beyond your allowed duration of stay can result in a violation of U.S. immigration laws and may cause you to be ineligible for travel to the United States in the future.  

Q:  When is the right time to apply for this longer-validity visa?

The up-to ten-year validity visa is not a temporary offer, but represents a long-term reciprocal commitment.  While an applicant should generally apply well in advance of their anticipated travel date, an individual with a currently valid visa or with no current travel plan should not rush to apply.  

Q:  If the visa currently in my passport has one year validity, does it now have a longer validity?  

Existing visas will be valid only until the expiration date printed on the current visa.  This extension does NOT increase the validity of visas already issued.  To obtain a visa with extended validity, holders of valid or recently-expired visas will need to apply again.  Please note that many visa applicants are eligible for the Interview Waiver Program under which an interview may not be required; more information on IWP processing can be found at www.ustraveldocs.com . 

Q:  Will U.S. citizens receive ten-year tourism and business visitor visas in China?  

Because this is a reciprocal arrangement, the Chinese government is committed to issuing visas valid for up to the same duration.

Q:  What happens if U.S. citizens aren’t issued ten-year tourist visas?  Will anything change for Chinese nationals?  

The arrangement is based on reciprocity.  Chinese nationals will be afforded the same maximum validity for B-category visas as U.S. citizens are afforded when applying for an equivalent visa category.  

Q:  When will other classifications of visas have longer validity?  Why don’t other classifications of visas have long validity?

The United States and China continue to discuss visa validity for other classes of visas.  All such decisions are made on a reciprocal basis.  At the same time, it is important to note that in FY2014, business, tourist, student, and exchange visitor visas represented 97 percent of all nonimmigrant visa applications processed in China for Chinese citizens.  

Q: Will dependent family members of students and exchange visitors also be eligible for these increases in visa validity?

Yes, all qualified dependent family members of students and exchange visitors will be eligible for these same increases in visa validity.

Q: Can I apply for a ten-year visa if I am a Chinese national living in a country other than China?

Yes, maximum visa validity is determined by the reciprocity arrangement with the country that issued your passport and not the country in which you apply.

Shortage of Schengen Visa interview slots likely to impact your Europe travel plans

A s the summer holiday season takes off, an increasing number of Indian travellers are encountering challenges in obtaining Schengen visas, given the surge in demand for travel to Europe in 2024. Reports indicate that securing an appointment for a visa interview in Germany or Italy is now only possible in July 2024.

If reports are to go by, this surge reflects a 44% increase in visa applications for Schengen countries, including those from India. In the past year alone, Schengen visa applications from India rose from 6.7 lakh in 2022 to 9.7 lakh.

India stands as the second-highest globally in terms of the percentage rise in visa applications, closely following China. Despite this surge in demand, many Indian travellers are facing disruptions in their travel plans due to the scarcity of available visa interview slots. Anil Kalsi, Vice President of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), lamented the situation, stating, "Appointments for Schengen Visa interviews are simply unavailable with the majority of Schengen countries. If you plan to travel to Europe this summer, the earliest appointment date for Germany and Italy is in July. This is making life very difficult for travellers."

Experts suggest that the actual demand from India may surpass the reported figures, indicating a higher need for visas than officially recorded. However, the shortage of available visa interview slots continues to impede the plans of aspiring Indian travellers. Kalsi emphasised the severity of the shortage of interview slots across most Schengen countries, highlighting how such circumstances compel travellers to settle for available slots in other destinations or even abandon their plans to visit Europe altogether.

This surge in visa applications presents a contrasting narrative compared to countries like Russia and China. While demand from China skyrocketed to the top spot in 2022, witnessing a remarkable 1,104% rise compared to the previous year, Russia's trajectory shifted from rank 2 in 2022 to rank 5 in 2023, attributed to its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Geopolitical turmoil has resulted in a steep 25% decline in Schengen visa applications from Russia over the past two years.

The recently introduced visa 'cascade' regime for Indian passport holders seeking Schengen (short-stay) visas aims to simplify the process and grant easier access to visas with multi-year validity, particularly for travelers who have a well-documented travel history.

UAE announces new 10-year Blue Residency Visa for environment heroes

Abu Dhabi: The UAE on Wednesday announced a 10-year Blue residency visa for individuals who have made exceptional efforts and contributions to protecting the environment.

This was approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as he chaired the Cabinet meeting at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi. He said the move comes in line with implementing the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who had announced 2024 as the Year of Sustainability.

The Blue visa will be granted to individuals championing sustainability and the use of modern technologies in promoting the circular economy, and other relevant fields.

Sheikh Mohammed said the sustainability of our economy has become linked to the sustainability of our environment, and our national directions in this area are clear and consistent.

Youth agenda

He also approved the National Youth Agenda, among several initiatives, instructing the Minister of Youth to prioritise five key areas: empowering youth economically, developing their scientific skills, reinforcing their national identity, enhancing their community contributions, and activating their role in representing their country on the international stage.

CEO of Artificial Intelligence

The Cabinet has approved the introduction of the post of CEO of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in all major federal entities, in line with the UAE's strategy to strengthen its position in AI.

“Today, we approved the introduction of the CEO of Artificial Intelligence role in all major federal entities, as part of the UAE’s strategy to solidify its position in the field of artificial intelligence,” the Vice President said.

The initiative aims to facilitate the integration of AI tools within these institutions, further advancing the transition toward a new era driven by cutting-edge technologies across federal entities.

University rankings

The Cabinet also endorsed a new framework for categorising higher education institutions across the nation. The forthcoming national rankings will assess over 70 higher education establishments based on the quality of their education, the employability of their graduates, the strength of their scientific research, and their collaborations with international scientific institutions.

The unveiling of these university rankings marks a significant stride in elevating the calibre of our higher education system and fostering transparency. It empowers families to make informed decisions, selecting the most suitable and exemplary educational pathways for their children,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

“During the meeting, we were updated on recent advancements in our national space sector, with our national cadres now comprising 38 per cent of personnel engaged in global space projects. Additionally, expenditure on space research has seen a 14 per cent increase."

"Our commitment remains steadfast in guiding our youth towards promising and pioneering sectors while safeguarding our environment and adopting leading international technologies within our government. Concurrently, we are dedicated to enhancing our higher education systems, ensuring a brighter future for our youth,” Sheikh Mohammed added.

Changes from Visa mean Americans will carry fewer physical credit, debit cards in their wallets

The biggest change will be the ability for banks to issue one physical payment card that will be connected to many bank accounts.

NEW YORK -- Your wallet may soon be getting thinner.

Visa announced major changes to how credit and debit cards will operate in the U.S. in the coming months and years.

The new features could mean Americans will be carrying fewer physical cards in their wallets and will make the 16-digit credit or debit card number printed on every card increasingly irrelevant.

They will be some of the biggest changes to how payments operate in the U.S. since the U.S. rolled out chip-embedded cards several years ago. They also come as Americans have many more options to pay for purchases beyond "credit or debit," including buy now, pay later companies, peer-to-peer payment options, paying directly with a bank, or digital payment systems like Apple Pay.

"I think (with these features) we're getting past the point where consumers may never need to manually enter an account number ever again," said Mark Nelsen, Visa's global head of consumer payments, in an interview.

The biggest change coming for Americans will be the ability for banks to issue one physical payment card that will be connected to multiple bank accounts. That means no more carrying, for example, a Bank of America or Chase debit card as well as their respective credit cards in a physical wallet. Americans will be able to set criteria with their bank - such as having all purchases below $100 or with a certain merchant applied to the debit card, while other purchases go on the credit card.

The feature, already being used in Asia, will be available this summer. Buy now, pay later company Affirm is the first of Visa's customers to roll out the feature in the U.S.

Some of Visa's new features are in response to online payment fraud, which continues to increase as more countries adopt digital payments. The San Francisco-based company estimates that payment fraud happens roughly seven times more often online than it does in person, and there are now billions of stolen credit and debit card numbers available to criminals.

Other new elements are also in response to features that non-payment companies have rolled out in recent years. The Apple Card, which uses Mastercard as its payment network, does not come with a printed 16-digit account number and Apple Card users can request a fresh credit card number at any time without having to dispose of the physical card.

Visa executives see a future where banks will issue cards where the 16-digit account number, if the new cards come with them, is largely symbolic.

Among the other updates unveiled by Visa are changes to tap-to-pay features. Americans will be able to tap their credit or debit cards to their smartphones to add the card to mobile wallets, instead of using a smartphone's camera to scan in a card's information, or tap the card to their smartphones to approve a transaction online. Visa will also start implementing biometrics to approve transactions, similar to how Apple devices use a fingerprint or face scan to approve transactions.

The features will take time to filter down to the banks, which will decide when or what to implement for their customers. But since the banks and credit card companies are Visa's customers, and issue cards with the Visa label, these are features that the financial institutions have been asking for.
