Everything you need to know about Ohio State spring commencement ceremony

tours of ohio state

School districts across Ohio canceled graduation ceremonies in the spring of 2020 to curb the spread of COVID-19. Four years later, some of those students will finally get the chance to have their academic progress publicly recognized when they receive their college diplomas at Ohio State University's spring commencement this weekend .

Read More: From COVID to campus protests: Ohio State's Class of 2024 is prepared for anything

More than 12,000 graduates are set to receive their diplomas on Sunday during the ceremony at Ohio Stadium.

Here's everything you need to know about commencement:

What time is Ohio State's graduation?

The ceremony officially begins at noon, but Ohio Stadium will open to guests at 10 a.m.

Commencement typically lasts between two-and-a-half to three hours.

Where can I watch the Ohio State Spring Commencement 2024?

The university is providing a livestream for guests, families and the curious who cannot attend in person. You can find the live broadcast on the OSU Spring Commencement 2024 webpage or by using the player embedded below.

How many guests are graduates allowed to have?

There are no restrictions on the number of guests graduates are allowed to have inside Ohio Stadium. Tickets are not required for guests.

Will there be security?

Ohio State said "heightened security measures will be in effect throughout commencement ceremonies and events" to ensure guest and graduates' safety.

Guests are asked to enter through specific gates at Ohio Stadium to get into the ceremony. They are:

  • Gates 7, 9, 11, 13, 23 and 25 on the West side;
  • Gates 8, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 on the East side.

Security measures are similar to attending an Ohio State football game. All items and persons entering the stadium are subject to security screening and inspection via a walk through metal detector and/or a hand wand metal detector.

Prohibited items include:

  • Bags of any type larger than 5-by-8-by-1 inches
  • Noisemaking devices
  • Mace, pepper spray, aerosol cans or similar substances
  • Banners or signs
  • Sticks or poles
  • Weapons or items that mimic weapons including, but not limited to: lighters, matches, firearms (including Concealed Carry Weapon permit holders), fireworks, pocket knives, knives, spiked bracelets, brass knuckles, martial arts weapons, stun guns, squirt guns, super soakers, rope and chains

Guests who need to bring a medical bag should enter through the Press Entrance on the west side of the stadium or the Band Entrance on the east side of the stadium.

Where should I park?

With an estimated 60,000 people attending commencement on Sunday, mixed with construction on Cannon Drive , folks should expect heavy traffic around Ohio Stadium and on campus.

Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Sisson Hall lots and any of the permit zones around Ag Campus, the Schottenstein Center, or the student residence halls. No permit is required. The Arps, Ohio Union, Neil Avenue and Lane Avenue garages will be available at no charge.

Disability parking  is located in the East Stadium lot on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parking garages are likely to fill up fast, so its encouraged that guests use the West Campus parking lots and take a complimentary shuttle bus to the stadium.

Shuttle buses  will run from West Campus parking lots to the Coffey Road fields beginning at 9:00 a.m. until one hour after the ceremony. The Coffey Road fields are approximately a half-mile or a 10-minute walk, from Ohio Stadium.

Planning to Uber? Guests arriving by a ride-share service  should be dropped off at the Schottenstein Center.  Pickup after the ceremony will be at Neil Avenue and 19th Avenue.

What will Ohio State do if it rains during graduation?

Weather is looking a bit spotty for commencement on Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington is forecasting a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m., a chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. with partly sunny skies a high near 79 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Commencement will only be canceled if the ceremony cannot be held in Ohio Stadium due to inclement weather. That's because no indoor facility on campus can accommodate the graduating class and 60,000 guests.

If it is raining or rain is forecast on commencement day, graduates and guests should come prepared with appropriate rain gear. Ponchos, raincoats and something to cover wet bleachers are encouraged. Umbrellas are permitted in Ohio Stadium, but using them during the ceremony is discouraged.

Who is giving the commencement speech?

Chris Pan — a social entrepreneur, musician and inspirational speaker — will be the commencement speaker.

Pan, a 1999 Ohio State graduate, worked for PepsiCo and Facebook before starting his own company, MyIntent. "MyIntent makes bracelets with a customer-chosen word that helps the wearer remember to live intentionally," according to the university.

Pan’s umbrella organization SpiritLab promotes spiritual health and growth through experimentation.

“Chris Pan is an incredible example of taking everything you gain at Ohio State and applying it to find solutions that improve the world after graduation,” said Ohio State President Ted Carter. “As we celebrate commencement, I am confident Chris will inspire our graduates to make their own impact as they begin their journey as lifelong Buckeyes.”

Pan released a draft of his commencement speech to his social media accounts Sunday and asked for feedback.

A draft of the speech shows that he plans to invite everyone to sing parts of “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes and “This Little Light of Mine," and he plans to take his shirt off at one point.

After the musical numbers, Pan transitions to talking about the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza and how to address conflict resolution.

"What I learned is that there is so much pain and trauma in both communities. Pain causes hate and violence. Hurt people hurt people. Healed people help people," according to his draft speech. "When we heal ourselves, we heal the world. World peace starts with inner peace."

Who is Ohio State Buckeyes' Biggest Test in 2024?

Timm hamm | may 10, 2024.

tours of ohio state

Ohio State will enter next season as one of the top-ranked programs in the country, and possibly the favorite to win the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes have already been named as the No. 2 team this offseason per ESPN's way-too-early rankings , and as they currently hold the No. 3 recruiting class for 2024 per On3 Industry Rankings , we shouldn't expect them to fall as the summer progresses.

tours of ohio state

But what about for the regular season?

Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch thinks he knows who the biggest challenge for the Buckeyes will be in 2024.

“I happen to think it’s the most difficult game of the season for Ohio State. It’s on the road at Oregon," Rabinowitz said on 750 The Game . "They’ve never played there. It’s still going to be early in the season. It’s a tough game. Michigan is the one game they absolutely can’t lose because you figure Michigan is going to be a little down this year… but in terms of difficulty, if you asked ‘What game is Ohio State most likely to lose?’ I’d say Oregon.”

Right now, the Ducks are ranked just behind Ohio State at No. 3 in ESPN's current rankings. And as new members of the Big Ten there is an air of unfamiliarity between the two teams. That could give the Ducks the edge since they'll be playing at home.

The two teams have met just 10 times, with the Buckeyes taking the all-time series 9-1 so far. The Ducks' only win was a 35-28 victory in the last meeting in 2021 in Columbus. Prior to that, Ohio State was 9-0 including two Rose Bowl victories in 1958 and 2010, and the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in 2015, a 42-20 win.

But this season could be different. It starts a new annual rivalry for both programs, and one between two of the top teams in the country.

’24 Mid-Ohio Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

The 2024 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour season is, believe it or not, beginning to wind down. The Super Tour at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, taking place May 17-19, 2024, is stop eight of 10 on the schedule, leaving just Watkins Glen and Road America to go.

But that’s OK, because Mid-Ohio’s going to be a big one.

This is the first stop at Mid-Ohio since the 2020 season (and we’ve all agreed that the year 2020 didn’t actually happen, right?). SCCA’s Ohio Valley Region is ready for the action, and at press time, there were more than 240 entries on the list. So let’s get down to business as SCCA pulls on site with its Bravo trailer.

But before we jump in, if you’re a racer who wants to add to the driver tally, register now .

It’s a Course, For Sports Cars

It’s no coincidence that it’s the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and not Mid-Ohio Speedway or Mid-Ohio Race Track.

Mid-Ohio’s history coincides significantly with the Sports Car Club of America. Les Griebling started the track as an SCCA member in 1962 and built it from a nice little layout in rural north-central Ohio to a can’t-miss stop for professional road racers. It took another leap forward in 1982 when it was purchased by two-time Runoffs® champ (amongst a whole list of other accomplishments) Jim Trueman.

Under the Trueman family, the track reached its potential. A regular stop on the IndyCar circuit, sports cars remained at its heart. Can-Am, Trans Am, and others were regulars there; the Runoffs even made what was then an almost unimaginable move from Road Atlanta to Mid-Ohio for a spectacular 12-year run.

What’s a Buckeye?

Racers tend to develop where there’s opportunity. There are oval tracks and racers all around Indiana who have wanted to make it over to the Speedway for more than 100 years. Wisconsin has what seems like a disproportionately high concentration of road racers for its population, and that’s because Road America is a hometown hero.

Mid-Ohio fits that same scenario. From Chardon to Cincinnati and all points in between, Ohioans are registered for this weekend’s Super Tour – 52 entries, in fact, come from the 17 th state in the Union.

So what’s a Buckeye, anyway? Well, it’s a poisonous nut – so don’t eat one. But if you find the chocolate and peanut butter candy on your visit, pick up a batch of those.

Local Knowledge Matters

Mid-Ohio’s Runoffs history was dotted by people who lived and breathed the racetrack. Of course, it’s possible for an out-of-towner to win there, but that local knowledge seems very important.

One of the ways that those visitors earned knowledge, both back in the Runoffs days and now, is through the Mid-Ohio School. But if you’re really interested in building your local knowledge, you could always become an instructor at the school instead.

That list of instructors is an impressive one. Brian Till, Calvin Fish, Andy Lally, Tommy Byrne, Paul Dallenbach, and many, many more have all called the school home in the past and present.

In fact, three of those instructors are on the entry list at this year’s Mid-Ohio Super Tour.

Max Gee, the 2016 Runoffs silver medalist at Mid-Ohio and the 2017 champ at Indy, both in STU, is taking on the STL field at Mid-Ohio. The Bellville native has grown up around the track and has to be the favorite in the 13-car field.

In the same run group, turn your attention to John Schmitt in STU. Schmitt is a fellow instructor and, obviously, knows the track well.

Speaking of growing up at the track, Aaron Quine visited the track in diapers while his father raced, took over his Corvette when he was of age, and now races a Camaro of his own in GT-2. Quine is an instructor at the school, running full circle now that he’s crossed the half-century mark in age.

Discover who else is there by perusing the event’s entry list .

Tune In (and Tune Out of Everything Else)

Can’t make it to Mid-Ohio? You don’t have to miss a thing.

As with every event on SCCA’s Hoosier Super Tour, you can log in from home on SCCA.com , on SCCA’s YouTube channel , or on SCCA Road Racing’s Facebook page during the May 17-19 weekend – then kick back and enjoy all of the qualifying and racing action from DriversEye Live. Gregg Ginsberg and Brian Bielanski are once again on the call, with help from their team of associate producers pointing out information through the YouTube chat.

The event schedule will tell you when to tune in .

Opioid overdose prevention nonprofit spreads message through music festival tour

Doses of naloxone, an opioid overdose prevention medication, handed out at Austin City Limits by nonprofit This Must Be the Place.

An Ohio-based nonprofit is using the Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City to raise awareness about how to prevent opioid overdoses.

After a decade of heroin use and jail time for drug crimes, William Perry said he knew it was time to get sober.

Inspired by his own journey and sensing a need, he founded a nonprofit called This Must Be The Place. The goal is to normalize the use of naloxone , a life-saving drug that can reverse an overdose from opioids like heroin or fentanyl.

This Must Be The Place targets environments where hard drugs are often abundant: music festivals.

At the Kilby Block Party and other festivals across the country this summer, Perry and his team will be handing out free doses of Kloxxado, a nasal spray containing naloxone.

Perry said they aim to equip people with the tools to respond if they witness an overdose.

“When it comes to the opioid epidemic, and this is really unfortunate, but you have to throw out all of your preconceived notions about red state, blue state, reactionary things to this at the ground level,” Perry said. “Because this has affected nearly every family at this point.”

Kloxxado is small enough to fit in a pants pocket. Some keep it in glove boxes or attach it to backpacks.

Perry said the nasal spray is easy to administer.

“You don’t have to poke anybody. This isn’t ‘Pulp Fiction’ where we’re stabbing a long needle through the breastplate or anything like that,” he said. “This stuff doesn’t have any side effects, so you can never hurt anyone by giving it to them. It only does one thing which is block any more of the fentanyl from getting into that person’s system causing them to wake up.”

More information and instructions about how to get free overdose prevention medication can be found here .
