2023 Tour Championship final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won

tour championship 2023 leaderboard

The 2023 Tour Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Viktor Hovland , who prevailed by a shot to win the FedEx Cup at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Starting the final round well ahead of the field, Hovland still needed to play great golf to pick up the win. Xander Schauffele challenged Hovland with a front-nine 31, but Hovland kept his cool and made several timely putts to get to the trophy, his second in a row and third in 2023.

After starting the tournament on 8 under par, Hovland shot a 72-hole score of 19-under 261 to win on 27-under total and won by five over Schauffele, who closed with 62 and was 19-under total for the week.

Schauffele finished in second place, well ahead of Wyndham Clark , who ended up in solo third place, a shot ahead of Rory McIlroy .

Hovland won the $18,000,000 winner's share of the $59,725,000 purse.

Tour Championship recap notes

Hovland and Schauffele had the lowest 72-hole score in the event without starting strokes, meaning they split the 44.1 first-place Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which will boost their individual world ranking.

Hovland earns a five-year PGA Tour exemption for winning the FedEx Cup.

A total of 30 players finished the tournament in the 48th event of the 2020-2023 PGA Tour season after a 36-hole cut was not made.

The 2022-2023 PGA Tour FedEx Cup schedule is over, but the FedEx Fall starts in two weeks with the Fortinet Championship in California.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Collin Morikawa rockets into three-way tie on top with career-best 61

Morikawa's incredible round pushed him into a tie with keegan bradley and viktor hovland ahead of scottie scheffler.

The first round of the 2023 Tour Championship had enough twists and turns that it already looks quite different than when it started. Three different golfers caught and surpassed a surprisingly mediocre Scottie Scheffler, and after building an early lead based on all his work leading up to the Tour Championship, Scheffler now finds himself down one going into Friday's second round of the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs final.

Though the scores are close enough right now, it's still going to be extremely difficult for anyone to beat Scheffler on Sunday. Morikawa shot the best PGA Tour score of his career -- a 61 with an eagle -- and yet he's still just one up after 18 holes. What he did is completely unsustainable, and Scheffler is unlikely to lose two strokes to the field over the next three rounds.

Joining Morikawa (-10) on top are Keegan Bradley, who similarly impressed with a 63, and Viktor Hovland, who shot a 68. All three played bogey free golf as Scheffler made three bogeys and a triple on the day.

So, it's gotten a bit interesting for some of the presumed favorites. (We'll get to Rory McIlroy and his strange day in a moment). First, let's take at Thursday's first round for the leaders and what to expect the rest of the week.

T1. Viktor Hovland, Keegan Bradley Collin Morikawa (-10)

Morikawa made 11 threes the round after Viktor Hovland made 12 to win the BMW Championship last Sunday. Take that into consideration if you're wondering whether to be excited about the Ryder Cup in a month. The two now co-lead a tournament that will award $18 million to its winner. The two-time major champion led the field from tee to green and on approach shots and he was top seven in the field in every other category. That's ... probably going to get it done.

The question now is whether Morikawa can get it done in a PGA Tour event for the first time since the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George's. He poke afterward about how -- even though his numbers this year have been good -- you don't win tournaments only by putting up good numbers.

"It's kind of surprising that my strokes gained is that good [this year]," said Morikawa. "It shows that I've been working on the right things. But it takes ... there's a skill that you just can't measure for winning. You ask the best winners in the history, there's a skill that you just can't tell someone how to win, you can't teach someone how to win, you got to learn how to win. It's still in there. I know it is. It's just having things go your way and being consistent like today, not giving away shots, not hitting the poor shot that might deter a round, not making a bogey or two here today."

Hovland is probably the guy to watch here given where he started (-8) and how much Morikawa (started seven back of Hovland) and Bradley (started five back of Hovland) must do over the course of 72 hole to remain in front. Last week's BMW Championship winner is in the driver's seat.

One interesting sidebar here: Bradley is potentially playing for a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He's been vocal and adamant about making that happen, and now he has a pretty compelling opportunity.

Other contenders

4. Scottie Scheffler (-9) T5. Adam Schenk, Russell Henley (-8) T7. Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy (-7)

It was a strange round for Scheffler. It looked early like he might run away from the rest of the field as he -- at one point -- built a five-stroke lead. But late bogeys and a disastrous triple at the tough par-3 15th bumped him from that top spot.

What's kind of incredible: Even though he lost 1.5 strokes by hitting it in the water on the 15th alone, he was still in the top half of the field from tee to green and last in putting. The next three days are going to be extremely interesting on the putting front.

If -- and this is a big if -- he can not look at the actual leaderboard with starting strokes and simply focus on recovering the shots he lost Thursday over the next 54 holes, it's fair to suspect he will still probably win the tournament come Sunday.

Struggling Rory

Golf Channel's Todd Lewis reported before the round that McIlroy injured his back earlier in the week and had not played a practice round leading into the day. He hit balls for a bit on the range, but the result was not pretty. McIlroy, who has won the FedEx Cup three times in his career -- including in 2022 -- then stepped to the first tee and touched over 180 miles per hour ball speed with driver so it didn't seem like a massive problem.

However, he was clearly bothered by it throughout the day, often stopping to stretch it out, wincing and letting go of the club more often than a dialed-in Hideki Matsuyama. The result was a disappointing (albeit somewhat miraculous) 70. All in all, this was not a terrible result for McIlroy, who at times looked like he could have shot 80. He stays at 7 under, remains three back and is playing a golf course he rules. If he can get his back into a place where it feels normal, he's still very much in the mix.

Rick Gehman and Kyle Porter break down the first round of the Tour Championship at East Lake. It's storylines, scorecards and betting favorites from the finale of the FedEx Cup. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

2023 Tour Championship updated odds, picks

  • Scottie Scheffler: 3-1
  • Viktor Hovland: 7/2
  • Collin Morikawa: 11/2
  • Rory McIlroy: 13/2
  • Jon Rahm: 12-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 14-1

I would sprinkle on both Scheffler and Hovland here. They are your two most likely winners, even if it does not feel great after 18 holes of play. Both have good perspective on the arc of a tournament, and neither will be rattled by being caught (and in Scheffler's case, surpassed) by hot rounds from Morikawa or Bradley. I believe one of Scheffler or Hovland will win the Tour Championship.

Scheffler Rolling

He's already 3 under through six holes, six clear of everyone but Hovland (who he's five clear of) and probably en route to a victory. In other words, a show.

Rory McIlroy Struggling

McIlroy is having some apparent back issues early and did not play a hole this week at East Lake. He's +1 through two holes and now five back of Scheffler at the top. Also, Collin Morikawa is tied with him at -6.

PGA Championship Round 3 live updates, leaderboard: Morikawa, Schauffele share lead after wild Moving Day at Valhalla

Shane lowry posted a 29 on his front nine on saturday, and nearly set a new record by the end of his round.

It's Moving Day at Valhalla.

Saturday at the PGA Championship started with Xander Schauffele leading the field by a single stroke. He's led the entire way so far, which is something only five other golfers in the last 40 years has pulled off.

His lead, though, didn't last. Collin Morikawa quickly overtook him on the back nine, though the two both birdied the 18th to get to 15-under on the week. That gave them a one-shot lead over what's a very packed leaderboard .

Shane Lowry nearly set a new record , too. He carded a 9-under 62, which made him just the fifth player in major championship history to ever post that score in a round. It matched Schauffele's course-record at Valhalla that he set on Thursday, and moved him up to 13-under on the week — which was good for second when he hit the clubhouse. Lowry just barely missed a birdie putt at the 18th, which would've set the record.

Sahith Theegala is alone in third headed into Sunday at 14-under. Bryson DeChambeau, who eagled the last with a chip-in, and Viktor Hovland will join Lowry at 13-under.

Tiger Woods, however, is not in the mix . He fell to 7-over after a rough start on Friday, and was among those who missed the cut. The good news, is the weather looks good after a long day of rain on Friday.

Shane Lowry matched the lowest score in major championship history on Saturday afternoon at Valhalla.

Leaderboard Update:

With 18 holes to go, here's how things stand at Valhalla:

T1. Xander Schauffele (-15)

T1. Collin Morikawa

3. Sahith Theegala (-14)

T4. Shane Lowry (-13)

T4. Bryson DeChambeau

T4. Viktor Hovland

T7. Justin Rose (-12)

T7. Robert MacIntyre

More on the logjam that sits atop the leaderboard at Valhalla.

Morikawa, Schauffele birdie 18

Collin Morikawa birdied the 18th to finish out his 4-under 67 round. That moves him to 15-under on the week. Xander Schauffele matched him with an easy birdie tap-in for his 68.

The two will enter Sunday tied at 15-under in the lead.

Sahith Theegala left his eagle opportunity short, but that's the perfect lag putt. He's looking at a short birdie now at the 18th, which would move him to 14-under.

Schauffele right back

Xander Schauffele just birdied No. 17, which brings him back to 14-under and into a share of the lead.

The final group is now teeing off at 18.

Bryson DeChambeau now right in it

Well that's how you finish a round. DeChambeau just chipped in for eagle at the 18th, which brought him to 13-under and just one back from the lead. DeChambeau carded a 4-under 67 on Saturday.

Leaderboard udpdate

With the final group headed to the 17th, here's where things stand.

Leaderboard:

1. Morikawa (-14)

T2. Lowry (-13)

T2. Schauffele

T2. Theegala

T5. Rose (-12)

T5. MacIntyre

Collin Morikawa out in front

Well, that 4-way tie lasted all of about a minute.

Collin Morikawa just snuck in a birdie putt, and he's now alone in first at 14-under.

What a wild swing of events on the 15th green.

Xander Schauffele doubles, and we've got a 4-way tie

Xander Schauffele just doubled at the 15th, and we've now suddenly got a 4-way tie for the lead. An incredible two-shot swing after Sahith Theegala's chip-in birdie.

Schauffele, Morikawa, Lowry and Theegala are all tied at the top at 13-under.

Sahith Theegala again!

Sahith Theegala isn't going away. He just chipped-in perfectly from the thick stuff behind the green at the 15th for yet another birdie. He's at 13-under now.

Xander Schauffele just went long into the crowd behind the green on No. 15. A rare miss for him.

Xander Schauffele back up by 2

Xander Schauffele's lead is back to two. After a relatively slow start to the day, Schauffele now has two birdies thru five holes on the back nine. That dropped him to 15-under on the week, two shots ahead of Morikawa and Lowry.

A big birdie for the leader. Xander Schauffele rolls one in on the 14th. pic.twitter.com/UxLqcDFm4r — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 18, 2024

Justin Thomas gets to 10-under

Justin Thomas just barely missed an eagle putt at 18, but that left him with an easy birdie to get to 10-under. The Louisville native is just 5 back now heading into the final round.

Sahith Theegala is bouncing right back. After a back-to-back bogeys on the front nine, Theegala's now made four birdies in his last five holes. He's tied for fourth at 12-under.

It's a 62 for Lowry

Shane Lowry had an 12-foot putt for history. It wasn't meant to be. Had Lowry birdied 18, he would have had the first 61 in major golf history. He missed, and will settle for merely tying history with the fifth 62 ever.

Shane Lowry: 5th round of 62 in men's major championship history; four have come in last 3 majors Lowry gained 6.4 strokes putting in today's round, a career high. His 10.6 strokes gained putting this week are the most through 3 rounds by anyone in a PGA Tour event in 2024. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 18, 2024

Schauffele to 14-under

It's a shootout, and if you want to stay on top, ya better keep making birdies. That's what Xander Schauffele is doing. He's poured in another one, this time from distance on 10. One shot lead over Lowry and Morikawa.

Shane Lowry has 61 in sight

There have been four rounds of 62 in major history. There has never been a 61. With a gettable par 5 in front of him, Shane Lowry could do it. A birdie at 17 puts him at 57 shots on the day. A birdie on 18 and we'll get the lowest round in major golf history.

He's also moved into a share of the lead (-13) with Schauffele.

Justin Thomas birdies the really hard way

Justin Thomas hit a terrible drive to the par-3 14th, putting it 30 yards left of the hole. Buried in deep rough, with a trap in his way, he flopped it like Phil and then ... watched it drop for the birdie. He's got it to 9-under.

Jordan Spieth move to 8-under

Jordan Spieth has spent the last six PGAs trying to complete the career grand slam. But not since 2019 has he been in contention.

He wasn't through Rounds 1 and 2 this year, but he has made his move on moving day. A 4-under 67 has him to 8-under on the tournament. He'll have to go really low Sunday to make it happen. But he's not out of it, something he hasn't been able to say in a few years.

Justin Rose has entered the picture

Rose has been coming all day. A birdie at 15 has him to 6-under for the day, 11-under for the tournament, in a tie for fourth.

Schauffele back on top

Xander Schauffele absolutely blasted his tee shot on the par-5 seventh. A 247-yard approach and two putts later, birdie, 13-under, leader.

Tight leaderboard

How tight is it? We've got 21 players within four shots of the lead. The list includes seven major winners.

Lowry ... again

We've got a three-way tie atop the leaderboard. Shane Lowry with another birdie at 14. He's got it to 12-under along with Xander and Morikawa.

Scottie Scheffler is bouncing back

After going 4-over on his first four holes, Scheffler has birdied two of his last three. But that last one didn't come without some drama. It wasn't a long putt — about 6 feet. Pretty routine. He didn't hit a good putt, but managed to catch the left lip and down it went.

He's got it back to 7-under.

Shane Lowry continues his heater

A lengthy roll in for birdie at 13 for Shane Lowry has him to 11-under, just one back of the lead. After firing a 6-under 29 on the front, he'd cooled off a bit. That bird at 13 was his first on the back. Still, at 6-under on his round, 62 isn't out of the question.

Funny scene out by the ninth tee. Two kayakers have paddled up a creek to talk to players as they cross the footbridge after the tee. One is wearing a Tiger mugshot t-shirt. Collin Morikawa jumps into the lead

Collin Morikawa finally got one to fall, and Xander Schauffele's birdie putt to match went just right of the cup. That means that Morikawa has joined Schauffele at 12-under, which is two shots clear of the rest of the field.

Schauffele is even so far today, and 1-over thru his last 13 holes.

Huge group at 10-under

Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa are still locked in at 1 and 2 on the leaderboard, but there's a big group tied for third at 10-under.

The Group at 10-under

Sahith Theegala

Bryson DeChambeau

Dean Burmester

Shane Lowry

Rory back in it?

Rory McIlroy is trying to work his way back into this. He just made three straight birdies to close his front nine, and four of his last six. He's at 8-under now as he makes the turn.

Scottie Scheffler slips again

Things aren't going well for Scottie Scheffler today. He just hit it behind the fence on the 4th, and then chunked his approach up to the green. He still saved bogey, but he's at 5-under now for the week.

Thomas Detry had 0 eagles this season entering the week. He now has 2, and he's back to 10-under.

Shane Lowry goes low

Shane Lowry is taking full advantage of Moving Day. He just shot a 29 on the front nine to get to 10-under on the week. Suddenly, he's just two off the lead.

Collin Morikawa chip-in

Well, that's one way to offset an early bogey. Collin Morikawa is just a stroke off the lead again.

Scottie Scheffler double, bogey

Well, that's not a great start for Scottie Scheffler. He just doubled the second, which dropped him to T14. He then barely missed a par save at the third.

Scheffler is now 3 over thru 3 holes today, which has him 6 shots back of Xander Schauffele.

If it holds, this will be the lowest scoring round ever at a PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler's new caddie

Scottie Scheffler's normal caddie, Ted Scott, won't be on the bag today. Scott flew home to attend his daughter's high school graduation. This was planned well ahead of time. Scheffler's friend and PGA Tour chaplain Brad Payne will take his place today.

Xander Schauffele has led after both rounds at the PGA Championship. Historically, though, that's not the best sign for him.

PGA Round 4 tee times

UPDATE: Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa both birdied the 18th hole on Saturday to tie for the lead at 15 under heading into Sunday’s final round of the PGA Championship.

They will tee off in the final pairing on Sunday at 2:35 p.m. ET. Sahith Theegala and Shane Lowry will occupy the penultimate pairing, beginning their rounds at 2:25 p.m. ET. You can browse the full 2024 PGA Championship Sunday tee times below.

——————–

We already know that Xander Schauffele , Collin Morikawa , Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler will be among the star attractions contending for the Wanamaker trophy on Sunday at Valhalla. But we don’t yet know exactly when they’ll start their rounds.

Provided there is good weather, competitors will play in two-man pairings on Sunday, with all pairings starting off the 1st tee. The players at the bottom of the leaderboard will tee off first, with the leaders teeing off in the final pairing. For that reason, we won’t know the exact times until Round 3 is over Saturday night. But we can look to the past to get an approximation of what the Sunday tee times will be.

At the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill, Sunday’s final round got underway at 7:50 a.m. ET . Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland set out in the final pairing at 2:30 p.m. ET. We can expect Sunday tee times for this year to be similar.

You can watch Sunday’s final round of the 2024 PGA Championship on TV via ESPN and CBS, with coverage beginning on ESPN at 10 a.m. ET and continuing on CBS at 1 p.m. ET. Or you can watch streaming coverage all day Sunday via ESPN+ , including exclusive early action, featured group coverage and much more starting at 8 a.m. ET.

2024 PGA Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

L ouisville will be the center of the golf world this week with the 2024 PGA Championship in town for the 2nd major of the year. Valhalla Golf Club is hosting this storied event for 2nd time in 10 years. In 2014 Rory McIlroy won it to claim his 3rd major championship. The 1st round tees off on Thursday morning from Kentucky.

Below, we look at BetMGM Sportsbook's 2024 PGA Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

World No. 1  Scottie Scheffler hasn't played since winning the RBC Heritage the week after winning the Masters, but he'll be back in the field this week following the birth of his 1st child and in search of his 2nd straight major title. He's the betting favorite again at +450, followed by McIlroy (+750) and Xander Schauffele (+1400), who dueled on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship. Reigning PGA Champion Brooks Koepka is at +1600 in his quest for a 4th Wanamaker Trophy.

The field also includes 4-time PGA Championship winner Tiger Woods , who opens at +15000 to win. Woods finished 60th at the Masters (+16).

Valhalla Golf Club is yet another long PGA Championship course, coming in at 7,609 yards. It's a par 71, making it an even more challenging track at that length. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986 and this is the 4th time it is hosting a PGA Championship (1986, 2000, 2014). Hitting the fairway is critical because of how lush the rough is, penalizing players for missing with errant tee shots.

PGA Championship – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 2:32 p.m. ET.

Brooks Koepka (+1600)

Koepka is a big-game hunter and the PGA Championship is his specialty. He's won this event 3 times already, claiming the title in 2018, 2019 and 2023. He finished 2nd in 2021 at Kiawah, too, behind only Phil Mickelson . Koepka did not have a good week at the Masters (T-49, +9), but he's since gotten back on track, finishing 10th in Adelaide and winning in Singapore, his last 2 LIV starts. With a U.S. Open-type layout, Koepka has the ability to grind through 4 rounds better than most players.

Ludvig Aberg (+1800)

Aberg withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship last week due to a knee injury, but that seems to be more of a precaution than a serious ailment for the 24-year-old star. In his 1st career major start at the Masters in April, he finished 2nd, showing that no stage is too big for him. He has the all-around game to win a PGA Championship, too, being one of the best drivers and long-iron players in the world.

Rory McIlroy (+750)

This number was a bit higher before McIlroy won in convincing fashion at Quail Hollow on Sunday, but he's still worth betting at +750. He's now won in back-to-back starts and heads to Valhalla where he won the 2014 PGA Championship. With the Masters pressure behind him, he can play more freely in Louisville this week knowing this event doesn't come with the burden of attempting to complete the grand slam.

PGA Championship picks – Contenders

Will zalatoris (+6000).

In Zalatoris' last 5 starts at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open, he's finished 6th, 8th, MC, 2nd and 2nd. Few players in the world have had better recent success in those 2 major championships than Zalatoris, and it's largely because the best ball-strikers rise to the top in these events. He's a great bet for any PGA Championship, especially at +6000. That number is much longer than you'd expect from his major history.

Cameron Smith (+4000)

The biggest concern with Smith is his driving accuracy. He can get a bit wild off the tee, which at a course like Valhalla can be particularly penalizing. But if he can manage to keep it in the short grass, he'll be peppering these greens to give himself good looks at birdies. And when he misses the green, he has an excellent short game to scramble and recover for pars. He's finished 13th and 9th in his last 2 PGA Championship starts.

Jason Day (+5500)

Day is a past PGA Champion, winning in 2015 at Whistling Straits. He struggled in this championship in recent years but he has 6 career top-10s in the PGA Championship. Day is playing well at the moment, fresh off a T-4 at the Wells Fargo Championship last week, a good test before the year's 2nd major.

PGA Championship picks – Long shots

Jake knapp (+17500).

Knapp has all the talent in the world, but he can be inconsistent, particularly with his driver. When the timing of his swing is off, he tends to have a bad left miss off the tee, which has hurt him in recent months. But as we saw at the Mexico Open and Cognizant Classic in back-to-back weeks when he finished 1st and 4th, he's a star when the swing is timed up properly. He has the length to conquer Valhalla, too.

Alex Noren (+12500)

It's been 3 months since Noren finished worse than 24th in any event. He's on a heater right now and while that may not translate to a major win (he has zero career PGA Tour victories), he's worth considering at this price. Noren ranks 8th on tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green so his ball-striking is fantastic.

Cam Davis (+15000)

Davis was having a good week in Charlotte until he shot 6-over in the final round to tumble down the leaderboard, all the way to T-38. He surprised a lot of people when he came in 3rd at the 2023 PGA Championship and he's now made the cut in 3 straight years at this major.

Ncaa women's golf championship: texas a&m's mentality, lindblad's rare off day and more after saturday's second round, share this article.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The second round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is in the books.

Thirty-six holes at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa’s North Course have come and gone, and we’re one step closer to crowning a national champion. The defending champions, Wake Forest, are lingering around the 54-hole cutline, but the Demon Deacons are in a better position than No. 3 South Carolina going into the third round. After Sunday’s play, the field will be cut to the top-15 teams.

Meanwhile, a team that barely made it out of its home regional has taken control on top of the leaderboard, and the best female amateur in the world had the worst day of her college career.

Here’s everything to know about the second round at Omni La Costa:

Texas A&M rises to the top

tour championship 2023 leaderboard

In March, Texas A&M was playing in a tournament in Tuscon, Arizona, and Aggies’ coach Gerrod Chadwell took his team on a road trip. The Aggies drove up the road to Scottsdale and Grayhawk Golf Club, site of the team’s semifinal appearance in the 2023 NCAA Championship.

Texas A&M had yet to put it all together in the 2023-24 season. The Aggies had enough talent and experience to compete against any field in the country, but the results weren’t there. Chadwell hadn’t gotten enough from his players and wanted them to remember what a championship feeling was like.

“I just pulled into the parking lot, and I wanted them to tell me how it feels,” Chadwell said. “I was like, ‘man, this is the way it should feel. Let’s go do it again.’”

Since that trip, Texas A&M has flipped the switch.

The Aggies, which finished fifth at the host team at the NCAA Bryan Regional, has been the best team through 36 holes at the NCAA Championship. Texas A&M is at 11 under and five clear of second-place Stanford heading into the third round. Clemson, which led after the opening round, is third at 3 under.

The contributions have come from all over the lineup, but none bigger than Adela Cernousek, who birdied four holes in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to get to 8 under for the tournament.

“I thought our round yesterday was special,” Chadwell said. “And today was playing just as hard. If you would have told me we were going to shoot whatever under this morning, I would’ve taken it.”

The Aggies shot 7 under to open the NCAA Championship and followed it up with a 4-under round on Saturday. Cernousek shot 4 under in the second round while Zoe Slaughter signed for a 1-under 71.

Ingrid Lindblad's rough day

tour championship 2023 leaderboard

LSU’s Ingrid Lindblad at the 2024 NCAA Championship. (Photo: LSU Athletics)

Ingrid Lindblad has no shortage of accolades for her career. But she did something Saturday that she has never done before.

She was LSU’s drop score. In the second round, Lindblad, a four-time All-American, carded the worst round of her collegiate career, a 9-over 81. She didn’t have a single birdie, instead carding six bogeys and a triple on her opening hole, the par-5 10th.

“She has been here five years, and it’s the first time her score hasn’t counted,” LSU coach Garrett Runion said.

Lindblad’s scoring average coming into NCAAs was 68.48. However, as a team LSU shot 2 under in the second round, thanks in big part to Aine Donegan carding a bogey-free 5-under 67.

Lottie Woad falls, individual leaderboard

ANWA champion Lottie Woad led after a first-round 7-under 65, and she’s right in the thick of things heading into round three. The Florida State sophomore shot 2-over 74 on Saturday, but she’s solo third and trails Cernousek by three shots heading into Sunday.

Woad’s round consisted of two birdies, but she also had two bogeys and a double on the par-4 11th hole. Clemson Annabelle Pancake shot 3-under 69 for the second straight day and is in solo second at 6 under, two behind Cernousek.

Arkansas’ Maria Jose Marin, Mississippi State’s Julia Lopez Ramirez and Auburn’s Casey Weidenfeld are all T-4 at 4 under.

Which teams are in trouble?

Defending national champion Wake Forest has some work to do to make it back into match play.

The No. 2 Demon Deacons sit at 11 over going into Sunday, which is inside the 54-hole cutline at T-14 but outside of the top eight. Wake Forest was three shots better Saturday then Friday, but every player sans Mimi Rhodes (even) is over par after 36 holes.

However, the defending champs are in a much better position than No. 3 South Carolina.

When the Gamecocks stepped off the course Saturday, they were beating no one, sitting at 17 over. South Carolina outside of the top 15 and six shots off the cutline.

In the second round, South Carolina subbed out two-time All-American Hannah Darling, who opened Friday with an 84, the highest score of the day. However, the Gamecocks were a shot worse Saturday, its best counting score being a trio of 1-over 73s from Louise Rydqvist, Vairana Heck and Maylis Lamoure.

Only six teams are under par after two rounds.

Rounds of the day

A trio of West Coast, Pac-12 schools posted the best rounds on Saturday.

LA schools USC and UCLA, along with Oregon, each posted 5-under 283s to move up the leaderboard. UCLA moved up 11 spots and is fourth, Oregon went up 10 and is solo seventh and USC, which struggled in the opening round, was 16 shots better and moved up 10 spots and into 11th.

2024 PGA Championship highlights: Xander Schauffele leads with 62

The first round of the 2024 PGA Championship is over at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, with Xander Schauffele off to a great start as he seeks his first major championship.

Schauffele shot a 62 (nine birdies, no bogeys) on Thursday, tying a record he shares with two others for best round at a major. He holds a three-shot lead on Tony Finau, Saheeth Theegala and Mark Hubbard.

Scottie Scheffler , who entered the tournament as the No. 1 player in the world and won the year’s first major championship at the Masters, shot a 4-under 67 and is tied for 12th place.

Tiger Woods teed off early in the morning and shot a 1-over.

USA TODAY Sports provided updates throughout the day. Here's how the first round went:

Mark Hubbard climbs to second place

Mark Hubbard put up a fantastic ending to the day as he jumped to second place after finishing the first round at 6-under-par.

Hubbard birdied three of the last four holes, and the late push began with a 30-foot putt on the par-4 15th. He doesn't have a PGA Tour win, but he ends the day just three shots back of the leader and he's tied with Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala.

First round on pace to break PGA Championship history

It’s been a great day to golf at Valhalla Golf Club, so great that the tournament record is set to be broken.

With the first round nearly wrapped up, 66 golfers are under par, which would be the most in PGA Championship history. The previous record was 60 in 2006 at Medinah.

Several players have noted the grass has been very soft and has played a factor in the low scores. A majority of the the players at the top of the leaderboard teed off in the morning.

Late golfers making some noise

Most of the crowd has left Valhalla Golf Club with the sun setting soon, but those still on the course are playing some good golf.

Mark Hubbard and Maverick McNealy are part of the third-to-last group to tee off Thursday, but they are both shooting well as they get close to wrapping up the day. Both are 4-under-par.

Scottie Scheffler wraps up first round

The top player in the world had a great first round in Louisville, finishing the day at 4-under-par and in a tie for 10th place.

Scheffler had a perfect start to the day with an eagle on No. 1, and he’s been able to overcome a couple of bogeys to be one of several players with low scores. He’s been on fire this year with four tour wins, including the 2024 Masters, and he remains in the hunt for another major championship this weekend.

Afternoon golfers climb leaderboards

No one has been able to get near Xander Schauffele’s incredible first round, but those who teed off in the afternoon are making progress.

All eyes have been on world No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler, and he’s played a steady first round at 4-under-par through 16. But some lesser known golfers had impressive days that were nearly free of mistakes. Tom Kim shot a 5-under-par to finish the day in a tie for fourth place, and Thomas Detry is also tied with Kim on the leaderboard.

Another hot streak for Collin Morikawa

Collin Morikawa nailed three consecutive birdies in the front nine to get him out of an early hole, and he’s done it again on the back nine to propel him near the top of the leaderboard.

Morikawa birdied Nos. 12-14 to put him at 4-under-par and is now tied for sixth. He’s knocked in some big putts during the hot streak, all of which were at least 10 feet away from the cup.

Tom Kim having mistake-free first round

Tom Kim has been impressive in his young PGA Tour career, and the 21-year-old is having another outstanding round on Thursday at 5-under-par through 13 holes.

Kim hasn't bogeyed in the first round so far, and he has birdies in three of his last four holes. His best finish in a major came in The Open in 2023 when he finished tied for second.

Thomas Detry climbing leaderboard

Thomas Detry has played a mistake-free first round so far as he’s made five birdies and avoided any bogeys through 11 holes. His shots on the fairway have been excellent and have set him up for relatively short putts. He’s tied for fourth place alongside Rory McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre.

The Belgian golfer has never won a PGA Tour event.

Scottie Scheffler finishes front nine strong

Scottie Scheffler had a hot start to the day with an eagle on No. 1, and he’s keeping a steady pace at 3-under-par through nine.

The world No.1-ranked player looked immortal until he bogeyed on the par-4 fifth, but he regained ground with a birdie on the par-5 seventh. He had a chance to climb up the leaderboard on No. 8 with a 56-foot putt for birdie, but it fell just short of the cup.

Xander Schauffele remains in first place after his fantastic 9-under-par day.

Collin Morikawa drills long putt to get under par

The 2020 PGA Championship winner is heating up after a slow start.

Collin Morikawa had two bogeys through five holes, but he's found a rhythm with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-8. He capped off an impressive streak with a 41-foot putt on the par-3 eighth to secure the birdie and put him at 1-under-par for the first time on Thursday.

Jon Rahm struggling early

Jon Rahm had an odd beginning of the week at the PGA Championship with his press conference, and things aren't looking good on the course either.

Rahm has quickly fallen into a hole with bogeys on three of his first five holes, including three in a row on Nos. 4-6. The Spaniard hasn't been able to get close on the green and his putter hasn't done him any favors either. Rahm is 4-over-par through six.

Scottie Scheffler cruising in solid start

Scottie Scheffler is showing early why he is the world No. 1-ranked player.

After his incredible eagle on No. 1, the 2024 Masters champion is in a groove after he picked up a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole to put him at 3-under-par and already launching himself into the top 10 of the leaderboard. Scheffler had great second shot on No. 4 to set up the birdie to put himself 13 feet away from the hole. It was a breeze with the putter, having no problem sinking the putt.

Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, others within striking distance

For the first round of a major championship, scores have been rather low for those players who teed off early at Valhalla. A brief fog delay caused tee times to be pushed back slightly, and the moist early conditions allowed many golfers to rack up the birdies.

In addition to Xander Schauffele's 9-under 62, fellow Americans Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala shot 65s to finish their opening rounds just three shots off the pace.

Other excellent early rounds included 5-under 66s from Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre. Among a group at 4-under 67 were Americans Ben Kohles, Brooks Koepka and Taylor Moore.

Scottie Scheffler tees off at PGA Championship, follows with epic shot

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler has a tough act to follow as he tees off at the second major championship of the golf season.

But after one hole, he appears to be up for the challenge.

Chasing Xander Schauffele's course record 62, the world's No. 1-ranked player safely launched his tee shot down the right side of the fairway on No. 1 ... and hit his approach shot into the hole for an eagle, from 167 yards out.

On ESPN's broadcast of the tournament, anchor Jim Nantz succinctly said, "Hello dad" as the ball took one hop into the cup.

Scheffler is playing in his first tournament since his wife Meredith gave birth to their son Bennett earlier this month.

Brooks Koepka soars on No. 7

The first eagle of the 106th PGA Championship belongs to defending champion Brooks Koepka.

Going for the green in two on the 590-yard par-5 seventh hole, Koepka hit his second shot from 211 yards out to within three feet of the hole. He converted the eagle putt to get him to 3-under for the tournament, then followed it up with a birdie to get to 4-under with one hole left to play.

Koepka has won five major titles in his career, including three wins in this event. He previously won the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019 in addition to last year.

Shortly after Koepka's eagle on No. 7, Bryson DeChambeau got one of his own on the same hole by holing out a 51-yard shot from the fairway.

Tiger finishes Round 1 at 1-over

Tiger Woods sits 10 shots off the pace at Valhalla after shooting an opening round of 1-over par.

On the same course where he won the 2000 PGA Championship (in a playoff over Bob May), Woods finished with back-to-back bogeys on holes 8 and 9 for a 72.

It was an up-and-down round of three birdies and four bogeys for Woods, who's seeking to tie the record of five PGA titles held by Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen.

Cam Smith gets his feet wet

Australian Cam Smith found himself in an interesting situation during his opening round that may seem quite familiar to many weekend duffers.

Tied for sixth at 3-under par, Smith's wayward drive on the par-5 seventh left him just to the right of the fairway landing area. The problem was, his ball was in the hazard and sitting in some shallow water.

Smith declined to take a drop and chose to play it out of the hazard … but not before taking off his shoes and socks to take his stance.

The Australian was able to make solid contact and get the ball back in play safely. His approach shot from 243 yards found the right rough, but he chipped it to within seven feet and sunk the putt for an unconventional par.

Xander Schauffele ties history with 62

Xander Schauffele has set a blistering pace at the 2024 PGA Championship, shooting a major championship record-tying 62 in his opening round to lead the tournament by three shots over Tony Finau.

Starting his round on the back nine, Schauffele – currently No. 3 in the World Golf Rankings – collected nine birdies without a bogey to get to 9 under par.

Finishing up with a two-putt par on the 415-yard, par-4 ninth hole at Valhalla Country Club, Schauffele's 62 tied the record he shares with Rickie Fowler (2023 U.S. Open) and Branden Grace (2017 British Open) for the lowest round ever in a men's major championship.

Tiger adds another birdie

Tiger Woods is back into red figures after notching his second birdie on the front nine at the par-5 seventh. (He began his round on hole No. 10.)

After a 300-yard drive into the landing area surrounded front and back by water, Woods found a fairway bunker on his second shot, but hit his approach shot to 13 1/2 feet and nailed the putt for birdie to get to 1-under for his round with two holes to play.

The birdie put Woods in a tie for 20th place.

Schauffele on record-setting pace

Continuing his early assault on Valhalla, Xander Schauffele has jumped out to a big lead with two holes to play in his opening round. With a two-putt birdie on the Par-5 seventh hole, Schauffele moved to an astounding 9 under par.

It was his fourth birdie on the front nine – after starting with five birdies on the back nine. If he birdies one of his two remaining holes and gets to 10-under, he would find himself in uncharted territory.

No player has ever shot 61 in any round of any major championship.

Schauffele leads Tony Finau and Robert MacIntyre by four shots.

Tiger back to even after birdie

Tiger Woods finally took advantage of a Par 3 on No. 3, using an iron to get within 5 feet of the cup and easily tap in for birdie. But no one has been able to stop Xander Schauffele (-7), who added another birdie at No. 4 and has a two-shot lead over Tony Finau, after he birdied 18 to close out his front nine.

Xander Schauffele moves to 6-under

Another hole and another birdie for Schauffele. He made good on the par 4, No. 2, while Rory Mcllroy hit the pin on the first hole of the back nine and tapped in for an easy birdie putt. McIlroy sits at 2-under, four shots off the lead.

Rory McIlroy struggling at end of front nine

Rory McIlroy showed a bit of frustration after his long putt for par on 17 went wide and settled for a bogey. He is 1-under and seeking his first major in 10 years, while Viktor Hovland's struggles on 17 also led to a bogey, and he is at 2-under. Three Americans are on top of the leaderboard, led by Xander Schauffele (-5), Tony Finau, who missed a birdie chance at 16, and Doug Ghim, who are one shot back.

Tiger finishes up and down front nine, Schauffele increases lead

Tiger Woods had one birdie and two bogeys in an uneven first nine holes and finds himself at 1-over after he settled for par on the Par 5 18th. Xander Schauffele is the leader at 5-under at the start of the back nine after another birdie on the 18th. Tony Finau is off to a torrid start as well and is one shot back after three straight birdies on 13, 14 and 15.

Xander Schauffele surges to PGA Championship lead

Schauffele, seeking his first major victory, birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 16 to take the outright lead at 4-under through his first seven holes. Doug Ghim and Jordan Spieth, who is off to a great start with birdies on three of his first four holes to start the day, are one shot back. After a bogey on 15, Tiger Woods, who has been playing with fire with his putting all morning, is back to 1-over for the round.

Golfers struggling with Par 3s, McIlroy, Spieth joins leaders at 2-under

With golfers usually making up scores when a hole is a Par 3, the early stages of Round 1 at the PGA are proving difficult. So far, only nine birdies have been made on the four Par 3 holes that have been played (No. 3, 8, 11, 14). But there have been 20 bogeys on those holes as well. Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, after his birdie on No. 13, Doug Ghim, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Jordan Spieth and Sahith Theegala are on top at 2-under.

Jumbled leaderboard early in first round

Through the early portion of the first round, no golfer has broken through to establish themselves as the one to beat. Doug Ghim and Xander Schauffele are the early leaders at 2-under, and there are nine golfers at 1-under, including Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald. Tiger Woods again settled for par on No. 13 and is still 1-over through three holes. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Tiger off to slow start

After Tiger settled for par on his first hole, his tee shot on the par 3 No. 11 went awry, and he had to settle for a bogey. Woods sits at 1-over, and his putting will be the key moving forward to see if he can take advantage of the multiple holes set up for easy scores.

Rory McIlroy starts with birdie

Rory McIlroy knocked down a birdie putt to get his PGA Championship started with a bang. McIlroy joins Martin Kaymer, Xander Schauffele and Luke Donald – who bogeyed No. 5 – at 1-under.

PGA Championship leaderboard

As more golfers join the fray at Valhalla, Luke Donald and Doug Ghim find themselves at the top of the leaderboard at 2-under. Matt Wallace, Xander Schauffele and Adam Hadwin are in a three-way tie for third place at 1-under. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Tiger Woods nets par on No. 1 at PGA Championship

Tiger Woods had about a 10-foot putt for birdie, but rolled it past the hole to the right. Woods recovered, however, and made his putt for par. Tiger joins 15 other golfers at even at Valhalla.

Luke Donald birdies No. 4 at PGA Championship

Luke Donald carded a birdie on the par-3 No. 4 hole to move to 2-under and take early sole possession of the lead at the PGA Championship. Donald's best finish at a PGA Championship came in 2006 when he tied for third.

Rory McIlroy starts PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy, who has finished at the top of the leaderboard in his past two tournaments, is just barely off the left side of the fairway as he starts his 2024 PGA Championship.

Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose teed off alongside McIlroy. Johnson and Rose were also in the rough, but just off to the right.

Tiger Woods starts PGA Championship

Tiger Woods ripped a perfect drive down the middle of the fairway to kick off his 2024 PGA Championship.

Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley followed, with Bradley joining Woods on the fairway and Scott finding the rough.

The next group off the No. 10 tee will be Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose at 8:25 a.m. ET.

Justin Thomas starts PGA Championship

Ludvig Aberg, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas are on the course after teeing off on No. 10. The group behind them is Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley, who are scheduled to tee off at 8:14 a.m. ET.

Nine golfers are through one hole, and Luke Donald leads the way at 1-under. Meanwhile, Doug Ghim, Tyler Collet, Adrian Meronk and Ben Kohles are even-steven. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Luke Donald with first birdie of 2024 PGA Championship

After splitting the fairway on his drive off the tee, Luke Donald wrapped up his first hole at the PGA Championship with about a 15-foot putt to card a birdie on the par 4 No. 1 hole.

PGA Championship weather

The Louisville forecast for Round 1 – aside from foggy – says partly cloudy with a high of 83 degrees. Winds from SW at 8 mph, according to the Weather Channel.

First group off No. 10 tees off

The second group is on the course, with Doug Ghim, Tyler Collet and Adrian Meronk teeing off from the No. 10 hole.

PGA Championship underway

Michael Block, Luke Donald and Shaun Micheel have teed off from the par-4 No. 1 hole, and the 2024 PGA Championship has begun.

PGA Championship delayed due to fog

Morning starting times for the first round of the PGA Championship are being pushed back 10 minutes due to a thick fog hovering at Valhalla.

PGA Championship 2024: Prize money payouts at Valhalla hit another record-breaking number

2152915900

It’s a sign of the times in men’s professional golf. The question wasn’t whether the PGA of America was going to increase its prize money payout for each golfer at this year’s PGA Championship to another record payday. Rather, it was by how much.

That amount turned out to be $1 million, the PGA of America announcing Saturday that its overall purse had jumped to $18.5 million with the winner on Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville taking home $3.33 million.

To put that number in perspective, just four years ago at TPC Harding Park, the overall purse was $11 million. But then the PGA of America bumped the amount by $1 million for the 2021 PGA at Kiawah, $3 million more for the 2022 PGA at Southern Hills and another $2.5 million for the 2023 PGA at Oak Hill.

Here's a look at the evolution of the prize money payout in the PGA Championship, offering a revealing glance at the trajectory of golf purses in general over the years:

Year: Winner's Pay, Total Purse 1916: $500, $2,580 (first year of the event) 1931: $1,000, $7,200 (first year winner's pay increased) 1953: $5,000, $20,700 (first year winner's pay was $5K) 1958: $5,500, $39,388 (first year of stroke play; winner's amount actually decreased that year) 1965: $25,000, $149,700 1978: $50,000, $300,240 1983: $100,000, $608,099 1988: $160,000, $1,000,000 (first year with a $1M total purse) 1993: $300,000, $1,702,750 1998: $540,000, $2,886,800 2000: $900,000, $5,031,100 (first year with a $5M total purse) 2003: $1,080,000, $5,938,300 (first year with $1M-plus to the winner) 2009: $1,350,000, $7,484,500 2014: $1,800,000, $9,913,000 2018: $1,980,000, $11,000,000 2021: $2,160,000, $12,000,000 2022: $2,700,000, $15,000,000 2023: $3,150,000, $17,500,000

The latest jump, however, leaves the PGA Championship’s purse shy of the $20 million paydays offered in the PGA Tour’s new signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.

Here is a breakdown of the prize money payouts for each place in the field. (We’ll update this on Sunday when we know what each player specifically earned for his efforts at Valhalla.)
