How to Get from Chiayi to Alishan (+ Train & Bus Schedules)

If you’re planning your first trip to the mystical forests of Alishan National Forest Recreation Area (阿里山國家森林遊樂區), the very first thing you’re probably trying to figure out is how to get to Alishan.

Alishan is a beautiful alpine area in Chiayi County in central Taiwan, with the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area as its shining star. This gorgeous scenic area sits at an elevation of 2158m and is neatly tucked away in the Alishan Mountain Range, one of Taiwan’s five biggest mountain ranges.

As one of Taiwan’s top three tourist attractions, Alishan is a huge must on any Taiwan travel itinerary . But unlike Taroko Gorge and Sun Moon Lake (the other two must-visit sights), Alishan is not the easiest place to reach and definitely requires proper planning.

Chiayi City, located roughly 67km away, is the main gateway to Alishan and also where you’ll kick-start your epic journey to one of the most beautiful places in Taiwan. So today, I’m going to share exactly how to get from Chiayi to Alishan so that you can find the best way to travel for you! With that said, I’ve also included a couple of alternative routes below if you’re coming from elsewhere in Taiwan.

Essentials Tips for Traveling to Alishan

Before heading out to the misty forest-filled slopes of Alishan, there are a couple of things you need to know.

  • Read my detailed  Alishan guide  to discover the best things to do, where to stay, and so much more!
  • If you don’t want to plan a thing and prefer to join a guided tour of Alishan, this  full-day discover Alishan tour  departing from either Kaohsiung or Chiayi is your best bet. A multi-day tour is also available through the same operator for those who’d like to spend a bit more time in the area.
  • Another stress-free option for more independent travelers is to  book a shared shuttle bus  from Chiayi THSR Station to Alishan. This is a great alternative if you don’t like public transport or simply want to squeeze in a few other attractions like  Fenqihu Old Street  and the  Eryanping Trail  into your Alishan itinerary.
  • If you’re relying on  public transport  to get to Alishan, there are  only two ways  to do so. The first and easiest option is to take the bus from Chiayi to Alishan. And the second option is to take the Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi to Fenqihu and then bus the remainder of the way. Both steps are set out below, but it’s crucial to  book your train ticket from Chiayi to Fenqihu online  before your trip.
  • Don’t forget to bring your  Easy Card (Taiwan’s transport card) so that you can travel on trains and buses easily.
  • While it is possible to visit Alishan on a day trip independently, it would be very rushed, and you’ll probably miss out on quite a bit (including the famous Alishan sunrise). At a minimum,  book at least one night’s stay in Alishan , or at one of the nearby tea farms in  Shizhao (石棹) for a truly memorable experience. Find the  best hotel deals in Alishan  here on Agoda.
  • Grab a  discounted Alishan National Recreation Area entry ticket  here on Klook to save some money on entrance fees!
  • If you suffer from  motion sickness , don’t forget to  bring some medication  along for the bus ride. The road past Fenqihu has lots of twists and turns!

How to get to Alishan from Chiayi by Bus or Train

Alishan is accessible from several places in Taiwan, but its  main gateway is Chiayi City  (halfway between Taichung and Tainan ). So therefore, the very  first thing you need to do is get yourself to Chiayi .

While several trains and buses offer access to Chiayi City from elsewhere in Taiwan, the  fastest option is via high-speed train . The high-speed train runs all along Taiwan’s west coast, between Taipei and Kaohsiung , with several stops along the way, including Chiayi. It’s not hard to get a seat on the train (unless you’re traveling during special holidays), but it’s always a good idea to grab a  discounted high-speed train ticket to Chiayi (tourists only) online first!

From Chiayi, there are essentially two ways to travel onward to Alishan;  bus or train . The easiest and fastest way to get from Chiayi to Alishan is by bus , although the ride is a bit rough, and you can get sick from all the twists and turns. With that said, if you have lots of time and want to experience one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, then definitely consider taking the iconic mountain train .

Buses depart from both Chiayi THSR Station  and  Chiayi Station , while the Alishan Forest Railway departs from Chiayi Station .  Here’s what you need to know about all the different ways to get to Alishan from Chiayi.

Taking the bus from downtown Chiayi to Alishan

  • Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus 7322
  • Departure point:  Chiayi Station (臺鐵嘉義站)
  • Arrival point:  Alishan (阿里山)
  • Cost:  NT$240 (cash or Easy Card accepted)
  • Duration:  2 hrs

If you’re spending a bit of time in Chiayi before heading out to Alishan, your best transport option is Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 7322 , departing from  Chiayi Station  (also where you can get the Alishan Forest Railway).

The bus operates several times a day between Chiayi and Alishan, making it a cheap and convenient option to access the area.

It’s worth noting that two buses run this route, #7322C and #7322D. However, don’t get confused with the codes because either one will connect you to Alishan. The only difference between bus 7322C and 7322D is the route. While bus 7322C goes directly to Alishan, bus 7322D stops in the scenic little town of Fenqihu .

If you have some time to spare on your Alishan itinerary, it is worth making a pitstop in Fenqihu because this little mountain village is extremely charming! And, particularly famous for its Old Street, tasty bento boxes, gorgeous tea fields, cherry blossom viewing spots , and excellent hiking opportunities nearby.

Bus schedule from Chiayi Railway Station to Alishan

The Alishan bus stop is next to the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area entrance gate. Before you can enter the park, you’ll need to buy an entrance ticket (NT$300) at the gate, but you can also grab a  discounted entry ticket  online here first.

You can take the same bus back to Chiayi train station when leaving Alishan, and I’ve set out the bus schedules for you below. If you’d rather go to the high-speed train station instead of the Chiayi main station, simply follow the steps in the next section below.

Bus schedule from Alishan to Chiayi Railway Station

Another very important thing to know is that you can  only buy a bus ticket back to Chiayi on the day you travel . Therefore, it’s always best to arrive at the bus station a bit earlier to make sure you get a ticket. Tickets can be bought at the 7-Eleven adjacent to the bus stop.

Taking the bus from Chiayi THSR Station to Alishan

  • Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus 7329
  • Departure point:  Chiayi THSR Station (高鐵嘉義站)
  • Cost:  NT$278 (cash or Easy Card accepted)
  • Duration:  2 -2.5 hrs

If you’ve just arrived in Chiayi via high-speed train, you can take  Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus 7329  right from the HSR station at Exit 2, platform 7.

Similar to the Alishan bus that departs from the Chiayi Railway Station, this bus also has two codes,  7329  and  7329A . Both buses go to Alishan, and both buses will be marked “Alishan.” The only difference yet again is that bus  7329A stops in Fenqihu .

Bus timings from Chiayi HSR Station to Alishan

The same two buses go back to Chiayi HSR Station, so you can take either one of them back when you leave Alishan. Remember to be at the station a bit earlier so that you can buy tickets and line up for the bus.

Insider tip:  For more info, you can see  all the Alishan bus routes and schedules  here on the left side of the page. It’s a good idea also to download the schedules to your phone so that you can always have them handy during your trip. (Simply select the route, click fare & timetable, and then click download. Voila!).

Taking the Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi

  • Alishan Forest Railway  (from Chiayi to Fenqihu) and Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus  (from Fenqihu to Alishan)
  • Departure point:  Chiayi Station (臺鐵嘉義站) via Fen Chi Hu Station (奮起湖車站)
  • Cost:  NT$384 (train) + NT$98 (bus)
  • Duration:  3.5hrs

The Alishan Forest Railway is arguably the most iconic train ride in Taiwan. Built by the Japanese in 1912, this tiny railway has a long and interesting history and played a key role in Taiwan’s former logging industry.

Today, the narrow gauge forest railway line no longer transports timber. Instead, it offers travelers front row seats to the mystical forests, ancient tunnels and wooden bridges dotted along the scenic train route.

Although the Alishan Railway ran all the way from Chiayi to Alishan back in the day, it’s only possible to go as far as Shizilu today. However, note that’s not where you need to get off. For the easiest route,  you want to get off at Fenqihu and not Shizilu,  which is still two stops further down the line. From Fenqihu, you’ll need to continue your journey to Alishan by bus. Here are the steps.

Step 1: Alishan Forest Railway to Fenqihu

  • Alishan Forest Railway  (from Chiayi to Fenqihu)
  • Arrival point:   Fen Chi Hu Station (奮起湖車站)
  • Cost:  NT$384
  • Duration:  2.5hrs

While taking the train to Alisan is undeniably an incredible experience, you’ll need to weigh the pros and cons to see if it is the best transport option for you.

The journey is much longer than taking the direct bus from Chiayi, and it’s not uncommon for services to be halted due to bad weather conditions. Another thing that you need to know is that the Alishan train tickets sell out super fast! There is  only one Alishan train service per day  (and  three over weekends ), so planning is key.

You can buy a train ticket (in person) up to 12 days in advance from the Chiayi train station, but your best option is to  reserve a ticket online in advance . Tickets can be booked  up to 15 days in advance  here on the official  Alishan Forest Railway online ticketing system . And you can pay online or in cash (within two days of booking). Tickets can be collected from any of the Forest Railway Stations or at any convenience stores. See all the  ticketing info  here.

Daily train from Chiayi to Fenqihu SCHEDULE

  • Train: Alishan Express 1 (mainline)

Daily train from Fenqihu to Chiayi SCHEDULE

  • Train: Alishan Express 2 (mainline)

For more info on the additional weekend trains, see the  Chiayi to Fenqihu train timetable  here.

Step 2: Bus from Fenqihu to Alishan

  • Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus 7322D or 7329A
  • Departure:  Fencihu Terminal Station (奮起湖終點站)
  • Arrival: Alishan (阿里山)
  • Cost: NT$98
  • Duration: 1 hour

As already mentioned, it’s not possible to take the forest train all the way to Alishan. Therefore, once you get to Fenqihu, you’ll need to take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus for the remainder of your journey.

Make sure you have the right change for the bus as most bus drivers hardly ever give change. Alternatively, use your Easy Card so that you can simply tap and go! Also, it would be wise to bring some medicine if you suffer from car sickness as the ride is quite shaky!

Direct Bus timings from Fenqihu to Alishan

If you miss the direct bus from Fenqihu to Alishan, you can also take a Chiayi County bus to Shizhao and then get a bus from there to Alishan. Make sure you’ve got Google Maps  downloaded on your phone so that you can check real-time information easily.

Here is the schedule to get back to Fenqihu.

How to get to Alishan from elsewhere in Taiwan

If you’re planning a trip to Alishan from elsewhere in Taiwan, here are a couple of alternative routes to help you out.

From Taipei to Alishan

There are several ways to get from Taipei to Alishan, but you should know it’s quite a long journey. Therefore it might be wise to break up your trip and spend a night in Chiayi. Below is a quick look at all the various ways you can get to Alishan from Taipei.

Option 1: High-speed rail & Alishan bus

  • Travel time:   75-110 minutes (HSR) + 2.5 hrs (bus)
  • Cost:  NT$1080 (HSR) + NT$278 (bus)

The fastest option to travel between Taipei and Alishan is to take a high-speed train ( HSR ) from Taipei Main Station to Chiayi HSR Station and then take a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus to Alishan from there. Trains depart roughly every 25 minutes between 6:26 am and 10:16 pm. From Chiayi HSR station, follow the steps above. But remember there are  only four direct buses  from Chiayi THSR Station to Alishan every day.

Option 2: High-speed rail & Alishan Forest Railway

  • Travel time:  75-110 minutes (HSR) + 40 mins (shuttle bus or taxi to Chiayi Station) + 2.5 hrs (forest railway train to Fenqihu) + 1 hr (Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus to Alishan)
  • Cost:  NT$1080 (HSR) + NT$384 (Alishan Forest Railway) + NT$98 (Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus)

If you specifically want to take the  Alishan Forest Railway , it will be a bit more tricky. Your best bet would be to  stay overnight in Chiayi  so that you have enough time to  catch the train the next morning . The first bullet train to Chiayi only leaves Taipei at 6:26 am and arrives at 8:09 am. And, since you’ll still need to get to the train station from there (40 minutes), it will be very rushed, and you might not make it in time to catch the Alishan Forest Railway train to Fenqihu (departing at 9 am). With that said, if you miss the train, you’ll still have the option to take the bus (see details above).

Option 3: Local train & bus

  • Travel time: 3-4 hrs (train) + 2 hrs (bus)
  • Cost: NT$461-568 (local express train) + NT$240 (bus)
  • Trains depart every few minutes between 6:10 am and 7:30 pm

While it is possible to take the normal train ( TRA ) to Chiayi from Taipei, it’s really not the fastest option, and you won’t make it in time to take the Alishan Forest Railway unless you spend the night in Chiayi.

Many trains run from Taipei to Chiayi, but catch  Puyuma Express 111 train  departing at  8 am from Taipei Main Station  for the fastest journey. The train ride only takes 2h34 and costs NT$598. From the train station, follow the steps for taking the Alishan bus highlighted above to continue your journey.

Option 4: Direct Alishan bus from Taipei

  • Travel time:  6h10
  • Cost:  NT$690
  • Departs at 20:45 or 21:45 on Friday nights (only)

An even cheaper alternative is to take an overnight bus from  Taipei Bus Station  ( see map )  directly  to  Alishan Transport Station  (the main Alishan bus stop;  see map ).

Kuo-Kuang bus 1835  departs at  8:45 pm (March-Oct)  and  9:45 pm (Nov-Feb).  The travel time between Taipei and Alishan is 6h10, and a ticket costs NT$690. It’s a good idea to buy a ticket a day or two in advance (directly at the station) as the bus fills up quickly.

Note though, the  bus currently only operates on Friday nights . The same bus goes back to Taipei at  11:30 am  on  Saturday mornings .

alishan forest train taiwan

From Sun Moon Lake to Alishan

  • Travel time:  3-3.5 hrs
  • Cost:  NT$336
  • Two buses a day leaving at 8 am, and 9 am

If you want to combine a trip to Sun Moon Lake with Alishan,  Yuanlin Bus 6739  is your best bet. Only two buses run this route per day , so you’ll need to plan your trip well. The  first bus leaves Sun Moon Lake at 8 am , and the  second one is at 9 am . The ride takes about 3 hours and costs NT$336. You can buy a bus ticket at the Shuishe Visitors Center ( see map ) in Sun Moon Lake or on the bus.

From Kaohsiung to Alishan

  • Travel time:  30 minutes (HSR) + 40 mins (taxi/ shuttle bus to Chiayi Station) + 2.5 hrs (Alishan Forest Railway) + 1 hr (Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus)
  • Cost:  NT$410 (HSR) + NT$384 (Alishan Forest Railway) + NT$98 (Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus)

Unfortunately, there are no direct buses between Kaohsiung and Alishan. But the good news is that Kaohsiung is only about 30 minutes away from Chiayi HSR Station via high-speed rail (NT$410). The high-speed train departs roughly every 25 minutes at Zuoying Station (accessible via KMRT). See the THSR schedules here.

Your  best option would be to catch one of the early trains (departing before 7 am) . That way, you’ll have more than enough time to get to Chiayi Station (40 minutes from the HSR station), where you can hop on the Alishan Forest Railway.

If you’re not an early bird, catch one of the later high-speed trains and then hop on the direct bus to Alishan (see above for details). Alternatively, you can also  join this day tour  from Kaohsiung and forget about all the stress!

Getting to Alishan from Chiayi in Conclusion

Getting to Alishan can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re a first-time visitor. But as you can see, there are loads of ways to travel between Chiayi and Alishan, no matter your traveling style or budget!

While each of the options listed above has its pros and cons, I hope this guide has helped you figure out the best way to travel from Chiayi to Alishan for you. If you want the fastest route, take one of the express buses from Chiayi. And if you prefer slow travel and want to experience one of Taiwan’s most scenic train rides, then the Alishan Forest Railway is for you! Happy travels!

May i know upon arriving at the Alishan station if taking the 1835 bus, how and whats the connecting part to get to the mountain top or viewing area for the sunrise? Any advice as I wasnt able to find much info on this.

Hey Annie, you’ll need take the little forest train inside the Alishan Park to get to the sunrise viewing area. Apparently one can also hike up, but I don’t have experience with that and it will probably be pitch black and freezing. If you want to watch the sunrise, you’ll need to arrive the day before so that you can buy a ticket for the forest railway and check exactly what time it departs. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the detailed summary, will definitely be using during our trip this April. Would you know if there is room for luggage on the Alishan Forest Railway train, and on the buses that go from Fenqihu to Alishan?

Hey Danielle, yes there is enough space for luggage (unless your traveling with loads of suitcases). Once you get to Alishan, you can also store your luggage at the Visitor’s Center if you’re not staying inside the park.

Hi, like to check if you know if we can get bus tickets from Chiayi train station to Alishan only on the day itself or earlier? Wanted to take forest railway but it was sold out, so thinking alternative is to take bus instead (and stop by Fenqihu) but worried about bus ticket being sold out as well. Also, how’s the frequency of the buses connecting between Shizhao and Fenqihu? Just in case, we cannot get direct bus to Fenqihu and have to make additional stop at Shizhao to take county bus to Fenqihu…

Hey CW, the bus tickets can’t be reserved in advance, so your best bet is to get to the bus stop a little bit earlier so that you can get in line. If you can, try to go in the week when it’s not that busy.

The buses between Fenqihu and Shizhao aren’t that frequent either, so it’s best to plan everything to a T. There might be one or two yellow taxis hanging around the Fengqihu Station which could be an option if you miss the bus. If you don’t see any, try going to the 7-11. The staff should be able to help you phone a taxi/ order one via the Ibon machine.

Hope that helps!

Hi! How about the experience about forest railway train? If I can not get a ticket for the train from Chiayi to Fengqihu, can I buy a ticket from Fengqihu to Chiayi in the afternoon? Is it the same road and experience?

March 28, 2023 at

Hey Thu, the only difference is that you would be going down instead of up. I think either experience would be amazing!

Hi, i tried to purchase the train tix from Chiayi to Fenqihu, but it’s not available. However, i can purchase the tix from Chiayi to Shizilu. Since Fenqihu is 2 stops earlier than Shizilu, can I just buy the Shizilu tix and get off at Fenqihu station?

April 12, 2023 at

Hey Qop, I’ve never taken the train to Shizulu so I’m not entirely sure if it actually stops in Fenqihu. The train tickets always sell out quite quickly, so perhaps your best bet would be to take the bus or book a shared transfer.

May 23, 2023 at

Hi Mariza, I would like to ask about accommodation. If we were to stay in Chiayi (close to the Chiayi station) instead of Alishan, would we be able to catch the sunrise? We are not renting a car, only planning to take public transport. Thanks!

May 25, 2023 at

Hey Alex, no I’m afraid that won’t be possible as the fist buses from Chiayi to Alishan only leave around 6ish. Have you thought about staying in Shizhao or Fenqihu perhaps? Your accommodation should be able to help you arrange a driver to take you up the mountain & train tickets.

May 27, 2023 at

About how long does it take to get from Alishan back to Chiayi City HSR? We are trying to figure out how much time we have before we need to head out and catch our train back to Taipei. We will also need to pick up our luggage in Shizhao. Google maps seems to think it takes almost 2 hours. Is that accurate?

June 5, 2023 at

Hey Monica, yes that sounds about right, it might even take a bit longer depending on which bus you take. If you still need to go back to Shizao to pick up your luggage, it would be best to factor in the extra travel time. Are you pre-booking your tickets back to Taipei? Maybe you could book a non-reserved seat on the HSR then you don’t need to worry so much about catching a specific train.

' src=

August 3, 2023 at

I’m thinking of bringing my luggage along as I’ll be staying overnight in Alishan. Do you know if I’m allowed to bring it on the Alishan train?

August 4, 2023 at

Hey – that shouldn’t be a problem but you might want to check the official website to see if they state any size requirements.

September 26, 2023 at

Hi I am visiting in end Nov and considering to take the public bus from Chiayi to Alisan. Do the bus allow passengers to stand if seats are all taken? If the bus is full, would a second bus come or do I need to wait for the next scheduled bus?

October 5, 2023 at

Hey Milo, if you’re catching one of the tourist shuttle buses, standing won’t be a possibility. The road from Chiayi to Alishan is quite intense with lots of twists and turns so it is better to have an actual seat. Your best bet is to arrive at the station a little earlier so that you can start queuing up faster and guarantee a seat.

' src=

Hi! Thanks so much for this super helpful guide. I’m thinking off doing the trip the other way around – going from Chiayi HSR direct to Alishan by bus, then stopping at Shizhuo for a night on the way back down from Alishan to Chiayi. Do you know where I can find the bus timings from Shizhuo to Chiayi HSR, or are there other transport alternatives? I’m assuming 7329 the way back is my best bet but haven’t managed to find timings for when it stops at Shizhuo.

Thank you!!

Hey Mel – yes, TW Tourist Shuttle 7329 (at 14:06, 15:16 and 17:16) or 7329A (only at 11:18 am) are your best bets as they will require the least amount of effort. You could also take multiple buses if you’re up to it. Check your journey on Google Maps – the bus schedule info for TW is pretty accurate on there.

October 21, 2023 at

Hi! I’m planning to take the bus from Shizhuo to Chiayi HSR too. I’m wondering if we can reserve the bus tickets in advance? Just worried that there wouldn’t be enough seats as some travellers might already have board at the Alishan stop.

October 22, 2023 at

Hey Tessa, unfortunately that’s not possible. I’m sure there will be space on the bus, but if not, you might just need to wait for another one. You can use Google Maps to help you figure out when the next bus comes etc.

' src=

Hi Mariza, Your Taiwan guides are really helpful, especially the transfer guides. We will try and take the direct Bus from Sun Moon Lake to Alishan and were wondering where the bus ends in Alishan? Any chance you can help?

Thank you Julia

Hey Julia, all buses end at the Alishan Transport Station – it’s right by the entrance of the park so you won’t have to walk too far.

Hi, This is great info.

Can I ask, once you are in Alisan, do you know if there are Taxi’s available. Im trying to figure out how to get to tatajia saddle the day after I arrive in Alisan and can not find any info.

Thanks. Harry

November 17, 2023 at

Hey Harry, taxis are few and far between in Alsihan, so I suggest checking with your accommodation to see whether they can pre-arrange a taxi service for you. Another option, perhaps, is to try Tripool – I’ve never used them, though, so I’m not sure if they can get you to Tataka Saddle, but it’s worth a shot. Just a heads up, they are quite pricey.

I went to 7-11 m earlier to buy a reserved seat bus ticket back to Chiayi Railway station, but it was sold out.

Apparently, tourists can buy a reserved ticket in advance via FamilyMart FamiPort machine or FamiTicket website.

January 19, 2024 at

Hey Thy, sorry for my late reply, I’ve been traveling. I’m not entirely sure about buying it at Fam Mart – did you give it a try? If it didn’t pan out, you can also purchase the ticket online via the Alishan railway website.

Hi, thanks for the great info!

We’re planning to take the bus from Alishan to Taipei (KK 1835). Just one way, as we will be arriving at Alishan from Sun Moon Lake.

Any idea where / when to get tickets for the Saturday bus departing from Alishan?

Hi Marcus, There’s a ticket booth at Alishan Terminal Station where you can buy the tickets. Go early as the tickets often sell out during busy periods and you might need to wait for the next bus or take an alternative route.

Hi , thank you for detail explaination. Just to make sure that i can go out from Alishan without hussle to Taichung City, can you recommend me route by train or by bus ? If i take bus from fengqihu, i have to catch train at chiayi tra then hop onto chiayi hsr to taichung, right? If i take bus, is there any direct route to taichung?

February 22, 2024 at

Hi Amy, unfortunately there is no direct bus from Alishan to Taichung. The easiest option is to take a bus from Alishan Transport Station (like bus 7329) to Chiayi HSR Station and then catch the high-speed train to Taichung. If you must leave from Fengqihu, you can try bus 7322D which will get you to Chiayi Train Station. From there, you can either catch a local train (TRA) to Taichung, or take a taxi (or bus) to the HSR station and travel onwards from there. Hope that helps!

How to Book Chiayi to Alishan Bus Tickets Online (Seat Guaranteed)

An Alishan shuttle bus with a Chiayi-to-Alishan bus ticket overlaid on the image

When taking the bus from Chiayi to Alishan (on of Taiwan’s top destinations ), foreign tourists usually swipe their EasyCard . However, this gives them last priority for seats. At peak times (weekends, holidays, cherry blossoms season in March/April), the line is sometimes so long that they can’t even get on.

To avoid this, you should reserve seats Alishan bus seats in advance. The only way to do this is by using the FamiPort machine in any FamilyMart convenience store in Taiwan, but the machine is in Mandarin only – you’ll need to ask the clerk for help.

But guess what? You can actually do this online! In this guide, I’ll show you how to navigate FamilyMart’s online FamiTicket system and reserve your Alishan bus tickets like a pro before you go !

You’ll probably want to consult my table of bus times from Chiayi to Alishan while you go through this article. Also see my more general guide to Chiayi , guide to Alishan , and other options for getting to Alishan .

Table of Contents

Things to Know Before You Book

  • If you find the below booking process too complicated and/or don’t want to take a deal with these buses to Alishan, just book a Taiwan car rental with driver via Tripool ( book on their site or download app for Android / iOS ). They offer point-to-point fares or an hourly rate. Find out the price here .
  • To book bus tickets online, you’ll need to sign up for membership first, with local phone number and address (I’ll show you how, even if you don’t have those).
  • You’ll be able to pay online with credit card , then pick up the physical tickets from any FamilyMart in Taiwan (additional TWD 10 fee per ticket).
  • Purchase your tickets up to one month in advance (buy early for holidays or cherry blossom season!) You can buy up to 4 tickets at once.
  • Under 6 (age 0 to 5) ride free but don’t get a seat. Kids age 6-12 get half-price tickets and get a seat. If you want a seat for your 0 to 5-year old, but a children’s tickets.
  • You’ll be able to choose a bus from Chiayi HSR station (see my guide to booking HSR tickets ) to Alishan or Chiayi Station (see my guide to booking train tickets ) to Alishan.
  • It’s also possible to buy partial tickets to stops on the way , such as Xiding (for Eryanping trail ), Shizhuo (for hiking or staying on tea plantations), or Fenqihu/Shizilu (for connecting to Alishan Forest Railway.
  • But you can only reserve tickets starting from Chiayi or Alishan. In other words, you can reserve a ticket starting at Chiayi and get off at a smaller stop like Shizhuo or Fenqihu. But you CAN’T reserve a ticket starting at Shizhuo or Fenqihu.
  • You can buy tickets for one ride at a time . For return tickets, you’ll have to book them separately.
  • Tickets can be exchanged or refunded, minus 10% fee, up to one day before your trip.
  • Ripped or stained tickets won’t be accepted.
  • If you miss the bus that you have a booking for, you can still use the ticket to ride a later bus that day, but you won’t have a guaranteed seat. You’ll need to line up like everyone else, first-come-first-served.
  • Also consider to just rent a car and drive there yourself .

Step 2: Book Your Bus Ticket

Now that you’ve successful signed up, go back to the sign-in page . This time, you don’t need to click anything, because it should already be on 登入 (sign in).

Hover over “交通 Transportation” and choose “阿里山線 Alishan Route” at the bottom left (see image above).

You can also book other Taiwan Tourist Shuttles here by choosing the button on the right (I won’t cover those other routes here, but the booking process will be the same).

Thumbnails of 6 different Chiayi to Alishan bus routes

There are now 6 possible buses you can book. I strongly suggest you use my Chiayi-to-Alishan bus timetable to figure out which bus you want to take.

#1 and #2 start at Chiayi station but don’t go all the way to Alishan. #3 and #4 start from Chiayi HSR station, with only #3 making the 20-minute detour to Fenqihu. #5 and #6 start from Chiayi Station, with only #5 making the detour to Feqihu.

The 6 different bus options are as follows (starting from top-left and going across):

  • 7314 (嘉義大雅站達邦線) Chiayi Station to Xiding or Shizhuo, only two per day, very early or very late
  • 7302 (嘉義大雅站-奮起湖線) Chiayi Station to Fenqihu bus which also stops at Xiding and Shizhuo
  • 7329 (阿里山線(高鐵出發)經奮起湖) Chiayi HSR Station to Alishan bus which also stops at Xiding, Shizhuo, Fenqihu, only 1 per day
  • 7329 (阿里山線(高鐵出發)) Chiayi HSR to Chiayi bus which stops at Xiding, Shizhuo, but NOT Fenqihu
  • 7322 (阿里山線(臺鐵出發)經奮起湖) Chiayi Station to Alishan bus which also stops at Xiding, Shizhuo, and Fenqihu
  • 7322 (阿里山線(臺鐵出發)) Chiayi Station to Alishan bus which also stops at Xiding, Shizhuo, but NOT Fenqihu

Note: all the buses make the return journey, too. So if you want to book from Alishan back to Chiayi, click on the relevant one above (the return routes will be included too, but need to be booked separately).

Once you figure out which bus you want to take, click the blue “購票” (buy ticket) button at its bottom-right.

For my test, I plan to buy a ticket from Chiayi HSR Station to Alishan, so I clicked bus #4. (Note: I could also choose #3, but that one will take about 20 minutes longer due to the detour to Fenqihu on the way).

Chiayi to Alishan bus ticket notes

Above you can see the details for the bus I chose, including the three possible departure times for Chiayi HSR to Alishan (9:30, 10:10, and 13:10) and Chiayi back to Chiayi HSR (13:30, 14:40, 16:40).

The notes in Mandarin also mention that the date, time, and number of seats should be written on the ticket when purchased, stained or ripped tickets are not valid, and there’s a 10% fee to refund tickets.

Click on the blue 我要購票 (I want to buy tickets) button in the above image.

A list of 6 bus times from Chiayi HSR station to Alishan and back, with comments added to show which 3 are going there and which 3 are coming back

Now you’ll see a calendar at the top. Click on it and choose your date of travel (up to 31 days in advance).

Then you’ll see a list of the six possible buses (see above photo). This one is relatively simple (other buses are more confusing, as we’ll get to below). The first three times in the table are from Chiayi HSR to Alishan, and the last three are from Alishan back to Chiayi HSR . You can confirm this by consulting my Alishan bus timetable here .

In my table, you’ll notice there should be one more departure from Chiayi HSR to Alishan at 11:00, but it’s not found on the above screenshot. Same thing for a 10:10 bus from Alishan back to Chiayi HSR.

That’s because those two buses stop at Fenqihu on the way, so you need to go back and choose the 7329A bus with the words 經奮起湖 (stops in Fenqihu) at the end of it (bus #3 in the list of 6 different buses I provided above).

A list of two bus times from Chiayi HSR station to Alishan, with notes added to indicate which one is going there and which is coming back

There’s one more very confusing issue which I need to explain. If you’re buying tickets from Chiayi train station to Alishan , you might notice that some of the bus times don’t match my timetable exactly. Here’s why.

A list of bus departure times from Chiayi train station to Alishan with some notes about each one and blue button to choose it for buying tickets

Just to make things EXTRA confusing here, on the Chiayi train station to Alishan list of departure times, some of the times listed are from Chiayi train station (where almost everyone gets on).

However, for two departing buses labeled 班次 in the middle column (5:55 and 13:55), the time listed is for Daya stop (one stop before the train station), so you need to add 10 to 15 minutes to it for the Chiayi train station boarding time. This means the bus will depart Chiayi train station at 6:05 and 14:10, respectively, and these times match the ones in my timetable.

And once again, if you’re planning to take any of the buses which stop at Fenqihu on the way, you’ll need to select bus 7322 (阿里山線(臺鐵出發)經奮起湖), or #5 in my list of 6 buses above. Then you should see the below options.

List of 4 bus times from Chiayi train station to Alishan, with two of them noted as return bus times, and one noted with a time change

For the Chiayi station to Alishan (with stop in Fenqihu) route, there are four options . The 9:10 and 14:10 are from Alishan to Chiayi station. The 9:40 is a departing time from Chiayi station to Alishan, while the 11:55 is from Daya station, so you need to add 15 minutes, for a 12:10 departure time from Chiayi train station.

Now that we’ve got the confusing times sorted, it’s time to actually select the bus you want. Once you decide, click the blue 立即購票 (buy now) button beside it (see last 3 screeshots).

If the button is gray instead of blue , the reservable seats are sold out. This doesn’t mean the whole bus is sold out, since only about 10 seats per bus are reservable. You can still line up and swipe EasyCard to ride that bus.

Then you should see a screen like below. Just to confirm you’re on the right track, the first option should say 全票嘉義-阿里山 if you’re going from Chiayi to Alishan, or it will say 全票阿里山-嘉義 if you’re going from Alishan to Chiayi.

A list of possible stops between Chiayi and Alishan with their prices

On this page, there is a list of possible stops with prices (top five are adult prices, bottom five which start with 半票 (half-price ticket) are child prices for the same five stops).

Starting at the top, the stops you’d be riding to are: Alishan 阿里山 (TWD 278) , Shizicun 十字村 (240), Shizhuo (197), Xiding/Eryanping 隙頂 (172), and Longmei 龍美 (154).

Note that Shizicun is the same as Shizilu (十字路 or Shitzulu). The Alishan Forest Railway travels from Chiayi to Fenqihu to Shizilu, the terminal stop, so you can access the train from either of these two stops.

Since I’m buying a ticket for myself only from Chiayi to Alishan, I chose the first one and selected ‘1’ (see screenshot above). You can choose 1 to 4 people .

At the bottom, leave the two boxes checked to agree to the terms and click the gray 電腦配位 (automatically choose seats) button on the left or 自行選位 (choose your own seat) on the right . I chose right.

NOTE: When booking a ticket from Alishan back to Chiayi , you may notice the stop choices are different. They may include unfamiliar stops like 頂六, 觸口, and 龍美. They don’t include stops you might want to get off at (Shizhuo, Fenqihu, and Xiding). If you want to ride the bus from Alishan and get off at one of these three stops, choose 龍美 , which is usually the cheapest adult ticket option (around TWD 124). 龍美 (Longmei) is shortly after Shizhuo, Fenqihu, and Xiding. You will still be able to get off at the stop you want. If your desired stop is Fenqihu, just make sure you’re on one of the buses that actually goes to Fenqihu by checking my bus timetable .

A diagram of bus seats with options to choose a seat

Now you get to choose your seat(s)! Dark gray seats are taken, light gray are available, and my selected seat is in green .

Use the zoom in/out magnifying glass to see more seats. However, I couldn’t find a way to move to the back of the bus. I was using desktop – apparently this works better on mobile.

After making your selection, click the 確定 (confirm) blue button at bottom.

Screenshot of a page showing a booking for a bus ticket from one person from Chiayi HSR to Alishan in Mandarin

The above is a just a confirmation page showing your booking number, date of travel, bus, row and seat number, destination, and price.

There’s nothing to do here. Just click the blue 下一步 (next step) button . Notice that a 10-minute timer to finish your order has started counting down (see the green circle in the above and below screenshots).

A page showing all the details of a bus booking to Alishan and option to click for 10$ ticket pickup fee

You’ve now reached the payment page. You must click the circle beside the words 取票手續費10元 . This means you agree to pay TWD10 to pick up the ticket later at FamilyMart.

Scroll down and enter your credit card information . Click the blue 結帳 (checkout) button at the bottom when ready.

A voucher for a booking for one person on the bus from Chiayi to Alishan

If your credit card doesn’t work (some international cards sometimes just don’t work for certain things in Taiwan), try a different one.

If the payment goes through, you’ll see the above confirmation screen. Congrats – your seats are booked!

I suggest you screenshot the booking as I have above. You can also click the blue 列印 button at the bottom if you want to print the ticket. However, you should also receive an email with all the same details .

Step 3: Pick Up Your Tickets at FamilyMart in Taiwan

Your final step is to pick up your physical Alishan bus tickets from any FamilyMart in Taiwan.

According to some readers, when they tried at certain FamilyMarts, it didn’t work or the staff didn’t know how to help them. Tell the staff that it was booked on FamiTicket , which will help them click to the correct section on the machine. If they still can’t figure it out, just try a different FamilyMart.

There’s no deadline to pick up the ticket, it just has to be before your ride. However, due to the above issue (you might not succeed at certain FamilyMarts), I don’t suggest leaving it to the last minute.

If you can read Mandarin, you can try to use the FamiPort machine in FamilyMart yourself. I’m not going to cover how to do this here, because there are several steps.

If you can’t do this yourself, just show your booking to the FamilyMart clerk – the email you received is best, but the screenshot will also work. If you have multiple bookings, you’ll need to show each one.

The clerk will go to the machine for you. After keying in your booking info, the machine will print a receipt. You’ll need to take that receipt to the counter and pay the booking fee (TWD 10 per ticket). Then the clerk will print the actual ticket for you.

And just like that, you’ve got reserved seats on the bus to/from Alishan! At the bus stop, you can still line up like everyone else , but when the bus arrives, the driver will ask anyone with reserved seats to step forward first.

Step 4: How to Cancel Alishan Bus Tickets

Unfortunately, canceling your FamiPort or FamiTicket bus tickets to Alishan is not super easy.

According to the online booking system, in order to receive a refund to your credit card, you’ll need to mail in your ticket to 3F, #61, Zhongshan North Rd. Sect 2, Taipei 104 (104台北市中山北路2段61號3樓), and they must receive it at least 1 day before the bus departure.

A member of my Taiwan Travel Planning group also reported that they were able to refund their ticket at a FamiPort machine in a FamilyMart in Taiwan. To do this, a Taiwan phone number must be entered. If you don’t have one, you can try to make up a 10-digit number starting with 09. I’ve done this in similar situations in Taiwan and it usually works.

The Full Chiayi-to-Alishan Bus Schedule and Passenger Guide

How to visit taipingshan, northern taiwan’s top mountain resort, 25 thoughts on “how to book chiayi to alishan bus tickets online (seat guaranteed)”.

Hi Nick, thank you so much for the very detailed guide – I followed it and managed to book my tickets!

Glad to hear!

Thank you so much for your post. I already booked a ticket successfully as per your instructions.

Hi Nick, Great guide – but! One item in the registration form is missing from your guide – the one where you should fill in your ID info (between you sex and your email address). Foreigners should put in their passport number there. On my third try my credit card was finally accepted – phew! Hopefully I bought the right tickets… 😉 Question – is it necessary to pre-book the bus back to Chiayi from Alishan as well? Cheers!

Nick, if I were to return from Xiding to Chiayi, do I purchase a ticket from Alishan to Chiayi and board at Xiding stop?

Thank you so much, I’ve added it! Glad your card worked. I would say that the demand for the bus from Chiayi to Alishan and Alishan back to Chiayi is equal, so yes, you should book it if you’re able to choose a time and stick with it. You wouldn’t want to miss the last bus and get stuck up there!

If you want to book the ticket online, you can only book tickets starting at Chiayi or Alishan. You can reserve a seat starting at any smaller stop in the middle like Xiding. That’s because they will totally fill the bus before leaving Chiayi or Alishan, as there is always a long line of people wanting to board the bus. They can’t just leave an empty seat for someone who will board the bus somewhere in the middle. So if you want to board at Xiding or any other small stop, you can only wait at the bus stop and swipe EasyCard to ride it. In other words, you can reserve a ticket starting at Alishan or Chiayi and get off at Xiding or other small stops. But you just can’t reserve a spot boarding the bus at Xiding or other small stops.

Dear Nick, Thank you for your clear instruction in booking the Alishan bus Ticket. I have ordered my Alishan Bus Ticket online. My departure date is about 1 month from now. Can I just collect the ticket on the actual day of departure from FamilyMart? Thank you.

Yes, that should be no problem. Just make sure not to leave it too close to the departure time and that there will be a FamilyMart where you planning to get it.

Hi Nick, Thanks for the useful guide! I didn’t manage to book the Alishan train and planned to take the bus up instead. I can’t find the 7329A bus from Fenqihu to Alishan at 12.50pm. Does it mean it’s fully booked?

And also, have you tried booking through Klook? Not sure if it will be easier?

Hello, I faced an error at the payment page. Once I clicked the option of ticket collection fee of 10 yuan, it does not allow me to input my credit card details. Why is this so?

Note these words in the article: “You must click the circle beside the words 取票手續費10元.” Can you confirm, did you try that?

Unfortunately you can’t book a seat on the bus starting from Fenqihu. You can only book a seat starting from Chiayi or Alishan. That’s because the bus seats are very high demand and they will also fill all seats before departing. Thus they can’t just leave one seat empty for someone to board halfway, such as Fenqihu. The only option to board at Fenqihu is to swipe EasyCard. Usually some passengers get off at Fenqihu, so it opens up some seats for more people to get on. But since there is often a line of people hoping to get on, I suggest you line up early, such as 30 minutes before the bus is coming. You can’t reserve bus seats on Klook. You can only buy a voucher which will give you a QR code to swipe when boarding. But the QR code does not guarantee a seat. It will be first-come-first-serve just like those swiping EasyCard.

Hi Nick! Thanks for this guide!

I just wanted to confirm…So even I were to pay the full fare to reserve tickets from Chiayi to Alishan and board at Fenqihu, the seats purchased could potentially still be filled by other passengers and the bus operator wouldn’t let us sit in those seats?

You can’t reserve tickets if you are boarding at Fenqihu. If you buy a ticket from Chiayi and don’t show up, they’ll assume you no-showed and less others sit in the seat. The buses to Alishan are always packed and have long lines of people waiting for them. There’s no way they are going just leave one seat open for someone because they booked it but then didn’t show up at the spot they booked from.

Hi Nick, thanks a lot for this guide! I’m having the same problem as Caren: once I click the circle beside the words 取票手續費10元, the credit card data input fields disappear and I cannot proceed buying the tickets. Do you have any idea how to solve this?

I’m sorry but I’m not sure. I’ve just tested it myself and that doesn’t happen for me. I suggest that you try it from a different browser or device if possible. Please let me know how it goes.

Agreed that also not all their staff are firm on the FamiPort machines. What helped me and my friendly staff get started was the fact that we should select the FamiTicket option/app, instead of searching for some bus option/app, etc.

Good to know – I’ll add that info to the article.

Hi Nick, thanks for the useful guide! For the return trip from Alishan to Chiayi HSR, is it possible to purchase the earlier bus rides at 1010am? Didnt seem to find this option from the booking page. Appreciate your advice! Thank you!

Yes, it is. The 10:10 bus goes to Chiayi HSR station, and it stops at Fenqihu on the way. So you need to make sure to choose the bus called 7329 (阿里山線(高鐵出發)經奮起湖), which means Alishan Line (HSR) via Fenqihu. You’ll see the 10:10 bus there.

Thanks so much for your guide! very helpful! just wanted to check for the return buses from Alishan to Chiayi, what does the 班次 mean? Cos i wanted to book the 17.10 bus from Alishan but unsure of what the 班次 mean for the return leg! We booked a night stay at Shi Zhao and plan to head there after our day at Alishan! As per your guide, i shld get tickets heading to 龍美 right?

I also plan to visit Eryanping, you think we can just hop on to any of the buses that go there from Shi Zhao without booking tickets?

Also, if i book the bus from Chiayi to Alishan, I can drop at any of the stops in between right and do i need to take the same bus number when I board again or can i take any of the bus that is heading to Alishan?

班次 just means “departure” or “shift”, I’m not sure why they even put that. When departing from Chiayi, their notes say that for any with the words 班次, the denoted time is from Daya (one stop before the train station), while ones with other words, the time is really for Chiayi station. When departing from Alishan, there’s no difference so you can ignore it. And yes, since strangle they give no option for Shizhuo, you can book for Longmei and just get off at Shizhuo. Every bus will pass Shizhuo. And yes you can just hop on any passing buses, as long as there is space. Most drivers will let you on even if there are no free seats though and you just have to stand. The drive from Shizhuo to Xiding/Eryanping is only like 10 min. You can see the timetable in my Eryanping guide for all the times, but sometimes buses are not on schedule – often they come up to 10 minutes early or late. If you reserve a ticket from Chiayi to Alishan, you could surely get off anywhere you want, but you wouldn’t be able to then get back on another bus with the same ticket. You’d have to swipe EasyCard to pay for any subsequent bus you take. Hope that all makes sense!

Hi Nick. If I were to purchase the ticket from Famiport machine, can it also be done at any Family Mart store or only at the ones in Chiayi?

Any one in Taiwan, they all have access to the same tickets.

Alishan, Taiwan: The Ultimate Day Tour DIY Travel Guide

alishan national scenic area travel guide

It’s my first time visiting Taiwan, and I decided to stay in the country for 12 days, during which I planned on visiting some iconic places in Taipei, the South, and the North. On my second day, I went straight to the south and stayed in Kaohsiung for 3 days since I purchased the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) Unlimited Tourist Pass for 3 days! Thus, I got a chance to explore the South for 3 days.

Apparently, one of my main goals was to visit the Alishan National Scenic Area. I’ve always been fond of reconnecting with nature, and I felt like this was one of the best places to visit in Southern Taiwan. In fact, the Alishan National Scenic Area is definitely a must-visit destination in Taiwan. So if you’re planning to visit Taiwan soon, this should be on your bucket list! Here’s a DIY travel guide to Alishan; including things to expect and do in the area!

Table of Contents

Understanding Alishan National Scenic Area

the iconic alishan century old trees

Alishan National Scenic Area, or Alishan National Park, is a stunning mountainous region located in Central Taiwan. It is one of Taiwan’s most famous and popular national parks, known for its breathtaking landscapes, ancient forests, unique flora and fauna, and captivating sunrise views. The park covers an area of approximately 415 square kilometers and is situated in Chiayi County.

The Alishan area is surrounded by mountains; thus, it has a cool climate with an average temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius. Alishan National Scenic Area offers great sunrise views, a sea of clouds, and an amazing railway experience!

In addition, Alishan National Park is easily accessible from Chiayi, the nearest city, which is well-connected by trains and buses from major cities in Taiwan. Whether you’re a nature lover, hiker, or photography enthusiast, Alishan offers a memorable and picturesque experience that showcases the best of Taiwan’s natural beauty.

How to get to Alishan National Scenic Area?

the old japanese railway in alishan taiwan

As mentioned above, Chiayi is the nearest city to Alishan National Park. Thus, getting to the national park is very accessible, whether you’re coming from Taipei City or the Southern part of Taiwan. There are actually different ways to get to Alishan, but here’s an easy way to get to Alishan National Scenic Area. (based on experience)

From Taipei

  • From Taipei, take a TRA or THSR (Taiwan High Speed Railway) and board a train to Chiayi station.
  • If you are taking the THSR, Then take a shuttle bus from Chiayi THSR Station. The first trip leaves at 9AM.
  • From Chiayi station, it takes about 3 hours to get to Alishan National Park.

From Kaoshiung

  • From Kaoshiung Station, take a TRA or THSR (Taiwan High Speed Railway) and get off at Chiayi Station. It only takes about 30 minutes to get here via THSR.
  • Then take a shuttle bus from Chiayi THSR Station. The first bus trip leaves at 9AM.

Essential Travel Tips and Reminders

  • If you’re traveling on a day tour only (like me) , it’s highly recommended to take the high-speed railway to save time.
  • If you want to catch the sunrise, make sure to book accommodation nearby.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Make sure to bring at least a jacket because the area has a cool temperature.
  • You may bring a bottle of water since there’s going to be a lot of walking! (Although there are some convenience stores within the area.)
  • If traveling on a day tour, be mindful of the bus schedules going back to Chiayi.
  • Don’t bring too much stuff with you. (In case you were wondering, I brought my drone and a camera, which I didn’t use. It made it a little difficult to trek the mountains.)

Things to expect in alishan, taiwan.

Alishan Forest Railway

The Alishan Forest Railway is an iconic narrow-gauge train that operates in the park, taking visitors on a scenic journey through lush forests, picturesque bridges, and tunnels. The railway is a popular way to reach the famous Alishan sunrise viewing platform.

Definitely one of the cutest old railways I’ve seen! It’s quite saddening that I didn’t get to take the train. Just a quick tip, if you don’t want to get exhausted hiking up the mountains or the Alishan area, you can consider taking the railway heading to the higher areas!

Alishan Sunrise

Watching the sunrise at Alishan is a bucket-list experience for many visitors. The best spot to witness the sunrise is Zhushan Station, where you can see the sea of clouds and the sun rising over the mountains. With that, it’s highly recommended to book accommodation nearby, especially if you’re planning to watch the sunrise early in the morning!

In my case, since I only had a limited amount of time, I couldn’t get to watch the sunrise since I was only traveling the whole day.

Ancient Giant Trees

Alishan is not just surrounded by mountains; it is also home to ancient trees, some of which are over 1,000 years old. The Alishan Sacred Tree Trail is a popular hiking trail where visitors can walk among these majestic giants. I was totally amazed at what the giant trees looked like! I literally enjoyed reading every description of the ancient trees I saw around the area.

Sea of Clouds

If you’re planning to watch the sunrise, you’ll definitely get to experience the sea of clouds in Alishan. The sea of clouds often occurs in the early morning when clouds cover the valleys, creating a surreal and magical atmosphere.

Sister Ponds (Shoujhenxi)

These two beautiful ponds are located within the park and offer serene and picturesque surroundings.

Alishan Cherry Blossoms

During the spring season, Alishan is adorned with cherry blossoms, attracting many visitors who come to witness the beautiful pink blooms.

And yes! I was so grateful to have seen Alishan’s Cherry Blossom trees, and I even got to see the Cherry Blossom Tree that’s over a hundred years old!

Indigenous Culture

Indigenous people live in the area surrounding Alishan National Park, and tourists can learn about their vibrant culture and traditions there.

Trails and Hiking

There are numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, offering visitors a chance to explore the natural beauty of Alishan and its surroundings.

It’s important to note that Alishan’s weather can be changeable due to its high elevation, so visitors should be prepared for varying conditions. The park is well-equipped with visitor centers, accommodation options, and amenities to cater to tourists’ needs.

Expect a lot of walking and hiking around the area so make sure to wear comfortable clothes and bring a bottle of water since there’s going to be a lot of sweating!

My Thoughts on Visiting Alishan, Taiwan

alishan taiwan travel guide

When I arrived in Kaohsiung, I fell in love with the city at once, which gave me second thoughts about visiting Alishan National Park. I was even wondering if it was going to be worth visiting the national park since I’d only be there for a day. Upon consideration, I was so glad that I still pushed through going to Alishan. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! Well, that was the original plan, though.

The Alishan National Scenic Area surpassed my expectations. I really didn’t expect it to be so amazing! No wonder this has to be one of the best destinations in Taiwan. A place that shouldn’t be missed! Also, it was my first time seeing the cherry blossom trees, which made me even more happy to be there. I’d definitely want to go back here, to experience the winter season!

Note: If you’re considering staying in Kaohsiung too, you may book your accommodation at Jia’s Inn .

You can visit Alishan National Park all year. But the most recommended time to visit Alishan is from November to April. Take note that it’s rainy season in Taiwan from July to August.

Can I visit Alishan for a day tour?

Definitely! It is possible to go on a day tour to Alishan. Just be mindful of the shuttle bus schedules so that you won’t miss the bus going back to Chiayi City.

Hi.First, you can take Alishan Forest Rail from Chiayi rail station to Fenqihu station, booking in advance required, then take bus from Fenqihu to Alishan Forest Recreation Area (AFRA). Don't forget to prepare some coins to buy ticket upon boarding. However, sometimes you may not get into the non-stop bus from Fenqihu to AFRA directly, you may need to transfer at Shizhao. Ticket office is in a restaurant beside the 7-11 store at Shizhao. Second, you can take bus directly from Chiayi rail station to AFRA directly, and seat can be booked in advance. Third, you may take bus from Taiwan High Speed Rail Chiayi station to AFRA directly. This bus could be booked directly as well. If you do not or cannot book return bus right now, don't forget to buy bus ticket once you arrive the AFRA. You can buy it from the one and only 7-11 store at Alishan main bus station. Good luck!

2-Day Solo Alishan Itinerary for Exploring Alishan, Taiwan

' src=

While there are many things to do in Alishan, Taiwan, it is possible to see everything in Alishan in two days. All you have to do is follow my comprehensive 2-day solo Alishan itinerary, and you can see all the best attractions effectively and efficiently.

Since the 1970s, the Alishan mountains have become a major tourist attraction. Alishan National Forest Recreation Area , or Alishan National Scenic Area , was one of the three main logging areas where the Alishan Forest Railway was built for transporting lumber.

Today, Alishan in Taiwan has a conservation area with over 1,400 hectares of forest with many historical remains throughout the park.

Alishan is known for its  five wonders : sunrise, forest, cloud sea, forest railway,  and sunset glow . So if you want to do some serious hiking, see thousand-year-old trees, and watch the famous Alishan sunrise, then you must visit Alishan in Taiwan.

Table of Contents

Before you start your solo Alishan itinerary

Before you plan your Alishan trip, take a look at my post on all the best tips for travelling to Taiwan . I included a lot of information, including getting a Taiwan SIM card , transportation around the country and more.

And before I dive into my Alishan itinerary, I want to share a few quick tips about going to Alishan Taiwan:

  • There are many trails in Alishan ; some are hilly , and some have stairs . But you don’t need to be an advanced hiker to trek any of these trails.
  • The bus ride from Chiayi to Alishan in windy for the last hour . If you have motion sickness, it might not be a pleasant ride. Take an over-the-counter anti-nausea medicine like Gravol.
  • When you disembark the bus from Chiayi to Alishan, the bus driver will give you a piece of paper . Don’t throw it away because it gives you a discount on the entrance fee .
  • There are several food options in Alishan in Taiwan; several restaurants serve hot pot and sharing plates.
  • If you don’t like any of the restaurant options, there is a 7-Eleven . The convenience store is great for snacks and meals.
  • Bring enough cash for two days . I don’t remember seeing any ATMs, but maybe there is one in 7-Eleven. You will need cash for the entrance fee, food, a train ticket to see the sunrise, bus fare, and any souvenirs you want to bring home.
  • When you leave Alishan , you can return to Chiayi or Sun Moon Lake .

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area Entrance

What to bring for your Alishan trip

Alishan Forest Recreation Area is in the Yushan Mountain range, with an elevation of 2,200+ above sea level . The average daytime temperature is between 15-25°C during summer and 5-15°C during winter .

And it is quite common to get a bit of rain in the mountains. Alishan weather changes quickly as you may get sunshine in the morning, light drizzling in the afternoon, to heavy fog in the late afternoon. At least, that is how I experienced Alishan in October.

The best way to dress is to wear layers while hiking through Alishan. And also, be prepared for cooler temperatures if you travel during winter.

Here is a list of items that you should bring for hiking in Alishan:

  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Thermal long-sleeve shirt
  • Hiking pants
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable and waterproof hiking shoes
  • Thick hiking socks
  • Hat for sun protection
  • Water bottle
  • Small backpack for day hikes
  • Camera (or smartphone)

How to get to Alishan Taiwan

Alishan is located in Central Taiwan . Whether you are going from Taipei , Taichung , Tainan , or Kaohsiung , it will require several modes of transportation to Alishan.

But first, you need to travel to Chiayi , the gateway city to Alishan. Chiayi has many buses and trains going to Alishan.

At a minimum , stay overnight in Chiayi and start your journey to Alishan the next morning . But if you have a few days to spare, definitely add Chiayi to your travel itinerary, as there are many things to do in Chiayi .

Take Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus #7322 from Chiayi to Alishan

From Taichung to Chiayi

In Taichung, take the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) train since it is the more straightforward route because both Taichung HSR Station and Chiayi HSR Station are outside the respective cities.

  • Time: from 1 hour 50 minutes

How to get around Alishan Taiwan

There are a few ways to get around Alishan National Forest Recreation Area.

I loved exploring Alishan on foot . It is a lot of walking, and many Alishan trails are uphill or have stairs. But it is worth your energy and effort. And it is possible to explore the entire park on foot in two days .

Alishan Forest Railway

The Alishan Forest Railway has a dedicated train line with three stops:  Sacred Tree Station , Chaoping Station and Zhushan Station . You can see many things at each train station so that you can plan your day around the activities near each stop. It costs NT$150 for a one-way ticket.

For this itinerary, I suggest taking the train from Alishan Station to Zhushan Station on the second morning of my two-day Alishan itinerary to watch the sunrise.

Tourist minibus

There are four tourist minibus stops around the park. You can purchase the tickets at the bus stand. But this mode of transportation is not required for this itinerary.

Where to stay in Alishan Taiwan

There are not a lot of choices for accommodations in Alishan. It is one of the most challenging places to find reasonable accommodation at an affordable price in Taiwan. Budget accommodation does not seem to exist in Alishan, and mid-range hotels have very basic rooms and amenities .

If you are only doing a day trip to Alishan, figuring out where to stay in Alishan is not an issue.

However, if you are following my Alishan itinerary and want to watch the famous Alishan sunrise, I highly recommend staying at one of the hotels in the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area .

Many hotels are north of the retail and restaurant area

Alishan Airbnb accommodation

There is  no Airbnb accommodation within Alishan Forest Recreation Area . And if you follow my 2-day Taiwan Alishan itinerary, you should stay within the park.

However, if you must stay at an Airbnb, the closest Airbnb accommodations are around Shizhao , where the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus #7322 stops en route to Alishan. Check the bus schedules to and from Alishan Forest Recreation Area if you want to stay there.

Alishan travel guide: Things to do in Alishan Taiwan

There are many things to do in Alishan Taiwan, and it might seem confusing what you should see first, where to start, etc.

With my efficient solo hiking itinerary, you can see everything in Alishan in 2 days. My how-to Alishan guide will show you exactly what you will see and how you can see everything most efficiently and economically.

All the Alishan attractions are pinned in the interactive map below. You can find more information about each attraction by clicking on the individual pin.

Day 1 of self-guided Alishan Itinerary (red pins)

1. start bright and early from chiayi.

The best way to start your Alishan journey in Taiwan is to stay overnight in Chiayi and leave Chiayi first thing in the morning . Chiayi is the closest city to Alishan and has plenty of transportation options to Alishan. There are many things to do in Chiayi , so if possible, stay an extra day if possible.

The easiest way to get to Alishan from Chiayi is by taking the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Bus #7322 . Take a look at my detailed post on how to take the bus from Chiayi to Alishan . You can catch the bus in front of Chiayi Station (pictured below).

The bus ride takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes . Take the 8:05 am bus at Chiayi Station , where you will arrive at Alishan Bus Terminal at 10:30 am . If you are an early bird, take the 6:05 am or 7:10 am bus to have more time in Alishan.

When you arrive at Alishan Bus Terminal, the bus driver will give you a piece of paper as you disembark. It is a discount for the entrance fee for Alishan Forest Recreation Area. The regular entrance fee is NT$300, and with the discount, you only pay NT$150 .

Your journey from Chiayi to Alishan starts at Chiayi Station

2. Drop off your bags at your accommodation in Alishan

Since you will be staying overnight in Alishan and you don’t need to hike around with all your belongings, drop them off at the hotel you booked ahead of time.

It is best to book accommodation before you arrive at Alishan as it is a popular tourist destination.

Once you arrive at the Alishan Bus Terminal, walk towards the entrance gate and pay your entrance fee .

Follow the road until you see several buildings on the left. This is the retail and restaurant area . Most restaurants , souvenir shops , 7-Eleven , and Alishan Visitor Centre  are here.

And the majority of the hotels are just to the east of the Alishan Visitor Centre, including Gau Shan Ching Hotel (where I stayed) and the new Alishan Shermuh Hotel . Alishan House is about a 10-minute walk into Alishan Forest Recreation Area.

Most hotels are just north of the Alishan Visitor Centre

3. Pick up a handy Alishan National Forest Recreation Area Brochure at the Alishan Visitor Centre

After you drop off your bags, return to the Alishan Visitor Centre and pick up the brochure (pictured below). The pamphlet is very informative, has all the info on all the best things to do in Alishan, and has a very accurate map of the area.

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area Brochure

Besides following my Alishan itinerary, the brochure map is also a great resource for visiting Alishan National Forest Recreational Area. I am thoroughly surprised by how accurate the information is in the brochure. All the attractions, sites, approximate distances, and times are pretty accurate.

Don’t worry about not speaking Mandarin. The staff at the Alishan Visitor Centre is very helpful, and they speak perfect English.

Map of Alishan National Forest Recreation Area

4 & 5. Walk to the entrance of Tashan Trail and hike up to Tashan Peak Observatory

The weather in Alishan is quite weird. It is clear and bright in the morning and slowly gets foggy in the early afternoon. As the afternoon approaches, the sky is quite foggy and grey. So it is best to do the most difficult hikes first to see the views.

From the park entrance, walk towards  Chaoping Station along the Forest Trail  towards the entrance of  Tashan Trail.

The trail is 3.5km long and will take about 2 hours to descend the mountain .

Tashan Mountain comprises several odd-shaped rocks and several platforms along the way . At the Tashan Peak Observatory , you can see Jade Mountain, the Central Mountain Range, and Alishan National Forest Recreation Area.

Remember to bring water and snacks with you.

The trailhead of Tashan Trail

6. See the Jiemei (Sister) Ponds along the Pond-shore Boardwalk

Follow the trail to see the Jiemei ( Sister) Ponds , composed of a larger Elder Sister Pond and a smaller Younger Sister Pond , where nearby mountain streams fill both ponds.

There are two pavilions in the centre of the Elder Sister Pond, where you can rest and enjoy the quiet surrounding. And the Younger Sister Pond is full in the summer and pretty low during winter. The pond nourishes the soil and provides water for animals, plants and microorganisms.

The Pond-shore Boardwalk goes around both ponds, where you can see the ponds from different angles. The entire path is about 186 meters long.

Follow the Pond-share Boardwalk

7. Visit the Alishan Shouzhen Temple

Follow the trail until you reach the Alishan Shouzhen Temple .

As the largest temple in Alishan and also the highest in altitude, Alishan Shouzhen Temple was built to bless and protect the people who are part of the logging industry. Logging was a big part of Alishan back in the day, but it is now a conservation area where the old cypress trees are honoured and protected.

There are also a few vendors selling souvenirs and snacks. This is a good time to fuel up if you are hungry.

Alishan Shouzhen Temple

8. Try Alishan Oolong Tea at the 50s Coffee Shop at Alishan House

After the long hike up Tashan Trail and meandering through the park, you might welcome a short coffee or tea break.

Visit the 50’s Coffee Shop , which is part of Alishan House  and order the famous Alishan Oolong tea and pastry if you are feeling famished.

The Alishan tea comes in a kettle, and you can have more hot water if you wish.

The tea and cake are not cheap, though. I believe the raindrop cake is NT$60, and the Oolong tea is NT$120. But the 1950’s ambiance, heated interiors, and the use of the clean bathroom are well worth the money.

The 50's Coffee Shop

9, 10 & 11. See King Cherry, Elephant Tree Trunk and Three Generation Tree

After a well-deserved break, follow the trail and find King Cherry trees . Alishan Forest Recreational Area has some of the best spots for cherry blossom viewing. There are over 19,000 cherry trees, most of which are Yoshino cherry trees, similar to the ones in Japan. During the Alishan Cherry Blossom Festival , thousands of visitors come to see the gorgeous pink flowers. It is truly the best time to visit Alishan!

Continue on the path and find many sacred tree relics in Alishan, including the  Elephant Tree Trunk . It is an old cypress tree stump that looks like an elephant trunk, hence the name.

Then you will see the  Three Generation Tree , where three generations of cypress trees grow on top of one another. The tree keeps on growing despite weather conditions and other disruptions.

Three Generation Tree

12, 13, 14, 15 & 16. See the Pagoda of the Tree Spirit, Xianglin Giant Tree, Alishan Museum and Ciyun Temple Scenery

Next, you will see a small pagoda which is the Alishan Shrine Ruins. Soon after is a monument in the cypress forest. The Pagoda of the Tree Spirit is a monument devoted to sacred trees. The base comprises a series of concentric circles where each of the six layers represents 500 years of growth.

Follow the Giant Trees Boardwalks and see all the thousand-year-old cypress in the Alishan Forest, including Xianglin Sacred Tree , a 2,300-year-old cypress.

If it is open, pop into  Alishan Museum  to see historical artifacts, models and old photographs of the Alishan Forest Railway.

And if you are visiting Alishan on a clear day, you can see the sea clouds at the Ciyun Temple Scenery . And in the late afternoon, you can see the sunset with Tashan in the background.

Alishan Museum

17 & 18. Follow the Giant Tree Plank Trail to see Shunyi Waterfall and No. 28 Giant Tree

Keep following the path, pass the Sacred Tree Station , and you will see Shunyi Waterfall.  Compared to everything else in Alishan, the waterfall is nice but not particularly impressive.

Continue on the Giant Tree Plank Trail and see some of the oldest Taiwanese red cypresses in the park. There are at least 36 giant trees in the area, including  No. 28 Giant Tree , which is  43.5 meters tall, 13.1 meters in circumference and over 2000 years old . It is one of the biggest trees in the giant tree forest.

No. 28 Giant Tree and other Giant Trees

19. Stop by Alishan Station to check the departure time for the sunrise train and buy ticket from vending machine

Before dinner, stop by the Alishan Station and check the departure time for the sunrise train .

Since sunrise differs daily, the information is updated daily at the train station. And the departure time for the sunrise train is based on the estimated sunrise time . Typically, the departure time for the sunrise train is around 5am.

The office for buying the Alishan Forest Railway ticket is open between 1pm and 4pm. But if you follow my two-day Alishan itinerary, you can buy a ticket from the vending machine any time on day 1 or buy the train ticket the next morning . It is not a big deal to buy it the following morning as there are usually plenty of tickets. An hour before departure, go to the train station to secure a ticket.

Alishan Station

20 & 21. Have dinner at the food centre or 7-Eleven

Most of the restaurants in Alishan are hotpot style or sharing plates, which are meant for bigger groups of travellers. I didn’t find any exciting options for solo travellers.

But there is a food center just south of the Alishan Visitor Centre . Several food vendors line the hallway of the food center selling local Taiwanese food .

Based on the clientele, I would assume that most people eating there works at the park (they wore uniforms).

Nonetheless, some food stalls have English menus. Plus, it is really affordable to eat there. A bowl of beef noodles costs about NT$90.

You can always eat at 7-Eleven in the retail and restaurant area if you don’t see anything you like. Eating at a convenience store sounds weird, but Taiwanese 7-Eleven’s have excellent food ! I had microwaved xiao long bao (soup dumplings) at 7-11, which was so delicious!

Food Centre

Day 2 of self-guided Alishan Itinerary (purple pins)

1. wake up early to catch the sunrise train at alishan station.

The best Aliahsn itinerary includes seeing the famous Alishan sunrise! This means the second day of your Alishan trip will start super early.

Your hotel will give you a morning call and give you an ample amount of time to get ready. So grab your warm clothes and camera (smartphone) and go to Alishan Station.

If you haven’t already, purchase a ticket from the booth on the main floor of Alishan Station. The sunrise train ticket costs NT$150 (one way). Make sure to bring cash.

Then wait for the sunrise train on the platform, where the train will take you directly to Zhushan Station .

Ticket for sunrise train

2 & 3. Walk up Mount Ogasawara Viewing Lot and wait to see the famous Alishan sunrise

Once you arrive at Zhusan Station , there is a platform where you can watch the sunrise called Zhushan Sunrise Observation Deck . There are also food vendors selling tea eggs and warm drinks in case you want an early breakfast while waiting for the sunrise.

Train schedule to go back to Alishan Station

But you should walk up to Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout (previously called Mount Ogasawara Viewing Lot) to watch the sunrise instead. The hike is easy, and it only takes 10 minutes.

Standing at 2,488 meters above sea level , Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout is the best spot to watch the sunrise at Alishan . The 360-degree platform lets visitors see the cloud sea and sunrise over Jade Mountain in Yushan National Park. And it is also an excellent spot for watching the sunset and stargazing.

Sun peaking through

4, 5 & 6. Walk downhill to Duegaoyue Trail Head and continue on Duegaoyue Trail to Duegaoyue Pavillion

After you capture many gorgeous photos of the famous Alishan sunrise, follow the paved road and walk down the mountain.

Walk past  Zhushan Station , and follow the main road until a sign for Duegaoyue Trail Head .

The Duegaoyue Sunrise Platform is on the right, another great platform for viewing the sunrise. Continue on the Duegaoyue Trail , walking partly on the railway. It doesn’t seem like it is the right way, but it is.

Follow the path

Part of the trail will lead you up a flight of stairs. You will walk up the hill, back down and up again until you reach  Duegaoyue Pavillion . The journey is 1.7km and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete.

Then backtrack the entire way until you see  Duegaoyue Trail Head .

Most of my solo day trips involve hiking and exploring

7 & 8. Follow the Shuishan Trail and see the Giant Tree of Shuishan

From Duegaoyue Trail Head , follow the road until you see Z hushan Sunrise Trail  on the right. Then descend the paved path.

At the end of the Zhushan Sunrise Trail, many signs are pointing to see the giant trees of Shuishan .

Follow the sign and walk along the old railroad tracks of the Zhongzhi Line of the Alishan Forest Railway . The railway is closed and is part of the Shuishan Trail to the giant trees.

You will pass the Truss Bridge , which will take you directly to the platforms built around the Giant Tree of Shuishan . The 2700-year-old tree is a Formosan red cypress tree, and there are many giant trees in Alishan due to abundant rainfall.

Walk on the railway

9. Walk on the elevated pathways of Cherry Blossom Trail

Walk all the way back from the Shuishan Giant Tree on Shuishan Trail and make your way to Cherry Blossom Trail.

It is a series of elevated pathways where you are high above the ground. It is another hot spot to see cherry blossom during the springtime (March to April). Because the pathways are elevated, you can appreciate the unobstructed views of the park filled with pink cherry blossom flowers.

But even if you are not visiting during the cherry blossom season, the pathways are an excellent way to see the park from another perspective.

Cherry Blossom Trail

10. Return to Chiayi or go to Sun Moon Lake or Taipei

My solo two-day Alishan itinerary includes many attractions and all the best things to do in Alishan. I hope you enjoyed my suggested route and enjoyed your journey.

And it is time to think of your next destination for your journey in Taiwan. So pick up your bags at your hotel and go to the Alishan Bus Terminal.

The only way to leave Alishan is by public bus at the Alishan Bus Terminal (unless you are part of a tour or have any other transportation arranged beforehand).

The same bus from Chiayi to Alishan can take you back to Chiayi . And there are many buses throughout the day. Pay by cash or use your EasyCard or iPass.

Or, if you want to continue to another destination, there is one bus going from Alishan to Sun Moon Lake at 1pm and it costs NT$336 . You can purchase your ticket on the day of travel at the 7-Eleven at the Alishan Bus Terminal or purchase two months in advanced. Call the Suili Station at 049-2770041 or email them at [email protected].

And there is a bus going to Taipei on Saturdays and Sundays only . The bus leaves Alishan at 11:30 am and costs NT$690 .

For more information on the bus schedules and destinations after Alishan, check out my post by clicking here .

Are you going to follow my Alishan itinerary and travel guide?

I want to create a complete Alishan travel guide for solo travellers because I had a tough time planning my solo trip to Alishan. There are so many things to do in Alishan, and I wasn’t sure if hiking Alishan on my own was even possible.

But after spending a few days in Alishan and repeating a few hiking trails, I created this 2-day Alishan itinerary that allows any solo traveller to hike all the Alishan trails efficiently and economically while moving at your own pace.

If you still have doubts about going to Alishan alone, there are 1-day to 3-day tours to Alishan from Chiayi . Tours take away all the headaches for planning and etc. But you won’t have the freedom of hiking the park on your own.

I hope this post convinced you that Alishan is worth visiting and it is possible to travel solo to Alishan. Let me know in the comments if this Alishan travel guide is helpful to you.

Hi, I enjoyed your write-up. May I know if it is safe to hike? Will there be lots of hikers along the trails that you have suggested?

' src=

Hi there, thank you so much! I felt safe hiking in Alishan. There were times I didn’t see anyone for a while but I still felt safe especially the longer treks further away from the centre. But in the trails near the train station, there were many people around. Hope this helps! 🙂

I’ll be visiting Taiwan as a solo traveler in Feb 2020. I’m planning to visit Alishan during my stay. Would it be okay to DIY this trip if one does not speak or read Mandarin?

Hi Nica! Happy to hear that you’re going to Taiwan solo! I DIY’d my whole trip and I don’t speak mandarin. The hotel people speak enough English and even the bus driver was able to help me. Bring warm clothes though – it is cooler in the mountains! Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi, thank you so much for posting in detail. I enjoyed reading your write-up. Hopefully your itinerary would be useful for my trip this month to Taiwan. Cheers!

Hi Debora, thank you very much for your kind message. I was a bit confused about all the places to visit in Alishan before my trip. But it all made sense when I was there. Hope the itinerary is useful and please give me any comments about it after your trip. Have fun in Alishan! 🙂

Becky Exploring

Hi Queenie, Searching for ideas for a trip to Taiwan and came across this article. I appreciate all the details you included in this post – it gave me some great ideas and I’m going to check out your other articles on Taiwan. Thanks!

Hi Becky, thanks so much! I tried to include as many details as possible because I had to figure everything out too. so why not share it? If you do go on your trip and have any other new info, please do let me know! 🙂

Hi Queenie thank you for the information. I am planning a trip in January 2021 to Fenchihu for probably a 3 night stay. I have been to Alishan recently, so might give it a miss. Do you have any tips for trekking around Fenchihu and a hotel nearby from where I can start my trekking, maybe about 3-4 hours a day for 3 days?

The rest of the time I just want to relax and will be happy not doing much.

I am a solo traveler.

Hi thanks for your comment! Alishan is a wonderful spot for solo traveller! I haven’t been to Fenqihu but Nick Kembel has some good insights and suggestions for Fenqihu. Take a look at this post: https://www.nickkembel.com/alishan-taiwan-sunrise hope that helps!

Jessica Hetherington

This is such a fantastic and in-depth insight into Alishan! The best I have come across on other blogs 🙂 Going to read the rest of your Taiwan articles. Love from England.

Hi Jessica! I’m so happy you found it and hopefully it will provide a good base for planning your trip to Alishan. It is a fantastic spot even if you are not with a group (and I actually prefer to visit Alishan on my own and not have any time constraints). I hope you enjoy my other Taiwan articles as well. Hope you are well, Jessica!

Fantastic and informative post, Quennie. May I ask about the sunrise viewing platform in Mt. Ogasawara? I tried to “google maps” it and couldn’t find it. Is it easily signposted to get walking the 10′ there from Zhushan train station? Is it really advisable to skip some crowds? (I’m going to Alishan for 2 night tomorrow, so hoping to not have too many crowds anyway being weekdays!)

thanks a lot, Iván

Hi Ivan, I just checked and its odd – googlemaps removed “Mt Ogasawara” and replaced it with “Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout”. If you search that, it is the platform where you can watch the sunrise. not sure why there is a name change between the time that i went and now but thanks for pointing it out to me. I will update my post to reflect that. Hope you enjoy your trip to Alishan and thanks for your comment! 🙂

Thanks Queenie for details itinerary…. I always wanted to plan and visit Alishan National Park, would you think flight landing in Kaoshiung better or taipei better ?

Hi Jovi, here are the 4 options:

1) Taipei to Alishan (high speed train, regular train, bus) * High speed train from Taipei HSR Station to Chiayi HSR Station (1hr27mins) * Train from Chiayi HSR to Chiayi Station (37mins) * Bus 7322 from Chiayi Station to Alishan (2hr)

2) Taipei to Alishan (regular train, bus) * Train from Taipei Station to Chiayi Station (3hr33) * Bus 7322 from Chiayi Station to Alishan (2hr)

3) Taipei to Alishan (direct bus) * Kuo Kuang Bus 1835 from Taipei to Alishan (Saturday and Sunday at 11:30am only; 6hr10mins)

4) Kaohsiung to Alishan (regular train, bus) * Train from Kaohsiung Station to Chiayi Station (1hr23mins) * Bus 7322 from Chiayi Station to Alishan (2hr)

Out of these 4 options, I would fly to Kaohsiung and go to Alishan from there because the travel time to Alishan is shortest.

Going from Taipei would take longer. Plus, if you decide to take the direct bus, it takes 6 hours and limits you on Saturday and Sunday only and you will arrive in late afternoon. But if you take the high speed train, it isn’t that much longer than the Kaohsiung option.

Anyway I hope explained this clearly. Hopefully this can help you make your decision 🙂

Hi Queenie,

Thanks for such an informative post! I am planning to follow your 2-day itinerary to the tee. I was hoping you can shed a light on your timing down the mountain after watching the sunrise on day 2? My next destination will be Taipei and i was wondering if I’ll make it in time to catch the bus down to Chiayi followed by train to Taipei. Thanks

Hi Esther, Aw I hope you will have lots of fun hiking Alishan. There seems to be a bus from Alishan to Chiayi Station (bus 7322) every hour after 1pm. I don’t think you’ll have a problem getting on one of those buses. FYI – Bus 7322 goes to Chiayi Station. it’s not the same as Chiayi HSR Station which is further away. Hope this helps, Esther!! have a good time in Alishan and Taipei!

Hi Queenie!

This is very useful! It will be my first solo trip overseas and am definitely interested to check out Alishan! Just wondering how light do you usually travel? With all the trains and bus rides, I would think it will be a hassle to travel with a luggage.

Hi Denise, I’m excited for your upcoming solo trip. It’ll be so much fun! I travel really light and always travel with a backpack. I’ve been travelling this way for many years because I see the benefits of travelling with less especially with all the different transportation modes, walking up stairs at subway, etc. I wrote a series of minimalist travelling posts about packing less than 7kg, travel wardrobe, toiletries, etc. Maybe it’ll give you some inspiration on travelling with a backpack? Let me know if you have any more specific questions about packing – it’s kind of a favourite topic of mine! Have a good trip and thank you for your comment 🙂

Hi, we will be coming from Shizhao, do a day trip to Alishan. then head to Chiayi. How would you tweak this 2-day itinerary to one (besides skipping sunset/sunrise of course) considering we only have roughly 4h 50 mins (or 5h 30 minutes if we skip a morning visit to Fenqihu–not all buses stop at Fenqihu) there assuming earliest bus departure from Shizhao and latest departure from Alishan at 5:10pm? We should have load up and eat a lunchbox at Fenqihu to beforehand reduce downtime.

It would be nice to ride the Forest Railway at Alishan for one of the segments given we elect to take the shuttle bus for faster transport from Chiayi to Shizhao, but due to limited time at Alishan not sure if this would be possible without skipping over notable attractions. We can certainly hike Tashan Trail or part of it it’s still up on the list of priorities.

Much appreciated.

Actually it might be smarter to leave Tashan Trail last to cover typical attractions and remainder for Tashan Trail before leaving Alishan. If that’s the case go clockwise (it seems most people start from Zhaoping and go counterclockwise), begin at Alishan Station and depart for Shenmu Station -> Alishan Sacred Tree -> if clear day, Ciyun Temple Scenery -> Giant Tree Plank Trail -> begin clockwise for the rest of the trip but make detour for Elephant Trunk Tree and Three-generation Tree -> Shouzhen Temple (or skip) -> Sister Ponds -> Tashan Trail for the remainder of our time here (if we have more than 2 hours remaining it should be safe to complete this without worry) and depart by 5:10pm. There will be no cherry blossoms in October so probably those trails can be skipped, hopefully I haven’t missed anything else.

Hi James, Looks like you have a very full and fun itinerary! Many people visit Alishan for the day so it is totally possible to see all the highlights. I like the plan you came up with. I would do the same and skip Duegaoyue Trail and Shuishan Trail. And leave Tashan Trail at the end of the day and see how much time you have to explore. Perhaps you can bring the lunchbox from Fenqihu or snacks from 7-11 in Alishan so you can have a snack somewhere in the park? There are food stalls near Shouzhen Temple but not a lot of selection. Sounds like this will be a wonderful trip! Have a great time in Alishan and other parts of Taiwan!

Any advise on where / when to get one-way bus tickets for Bus Kuo Kuang #1835 (from Alishan to Taipei)? Perhaps from the Alishan Transport Station?

Can’t seem to find much info on this service, other than Google Maps. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi Mark, I would imagine ticket is available at Alishan transport station and Taipei bus station. I tried to look for the route online but the Taiwanbus (dot) tw website has glitches and their app doesn’t work on my android phone (try it if you have iPhone). I’ve taken long-distance buses before and always had to get a ticket before getting on the bus. And when I was in Alishan, I bought my bus ticket to Sun Moon Lake at Alishan transport station/7-11 before getting on the bus. And when I was in Jiaoxi in Yilan County, I bought the bus ticket at the terminal before getting on the bus to Taipei. Sorry I don’t have any direct answers but hope this helps.

Hi Queenie, I would like to thank you for sharing your itinerary. I followed most of all your informations and it was very useful. Regarding the train ticket for the sunrise it is possible to take it in the vending machine at the end of the day for the day after so it may help for those who are fearing to miss the sunrise.

Hi Valery, I’m happy that you’re able to follow part of the itinerary. And also thank you so much for letting me know about the vending machine. I guess they have made changes and upgraded their system. It’s so good to know and I’ll update my post to reflect this info. Thanks again!

Hi Queenie, thanks for your for sharing your alishan itinerary. If I have a 2 day trip to Alishan, is the entry ticket valid for 2 days or do I have to buy a new ticket for the second day?

Hi Andy, The ticket should be valid – I was at the park for 3 days and didn’t have to pay extra but I did stay at a hotel in the park. Unless they changed it from a couple of years ago, you should be good with one ticket. Enjoy hiking in Alishan!

Exploring Taiwan by High Speed Rail — Guide to Maximising your THSR Pass

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

Here’s the 101 on the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) Pass: a travel pass you’ll want for exploring Taipei and beyond! Psst, read on to find out how to get 1-for-1 THSR tickets too 🤩

Two People Entering THSR - Taiwan High Speed Rail

Travelling to Taiwan can be pretty overwhelming. You’ll have a laundry list of things you want to do and cities you want to visit, but time and money just aren’t on your side.

When we were planning a three-day trip through Taiwan’s West Coast, we learned about a golden nugget called the Taiwan High-Speed Rail Pass (THSR Pass) — which saved us a lot of money and time!

Researching about the THSR was a doozy so we hope that this all-in-one guide will help you decide whether or not you should get one!

Do you really need a Taiwan High-Speed Rail (THSR) Pass?

Holding THSR Ticket in Train - Taiwan High Speed Rail

The Taiwan-High Speed Rail offers various ticket options which may be more optimal for you than getting the THSR Pass.

THSR Ticket Types Infograph - Taiwan High Speed Rail

There are two important things to consider to find out if a THSR Pass will save you more money: validity period, and the number of stops .

Validity Period: You’ll be able to use the THSR Pass for either two or three days, depending on which one you buy. We explore this more later !

THSR Route Infograph - Travelling around Taiwan

Number of Stops: If you’re going through at least 15 stops during your validity period, you’ll definitely want a THSR Pass.

For example, a round trip from Taipei to Kaohsiung/Zuoying (20 total stops) will already get you your money’s worth if you buy a THSR Only Pass .

A trip with fewer stops, like Taipei to Taoyuan which has only four total stops, would be better with a single-ride ticket.

If you’re going for the latter option, don’t miss out on a special 1-for-1 THSR promo when you use <GO2TAIWAN> at checkout! You’ll get an extra ticket for free when you purchase a THSR one-way ticket online till supplies last.

*Note: The promo is only applicable to non-Taiwanese passport holders visiting Taiwan for less than 180 days or with a visa-exempt entry.

*Pro-tip: Check out other deals for Taiwan on Klook , including discounts on attractions like Leofoo Village Theme Park and Miramar Ferris Wheel !

How much will I save if I ride the Taiwan Railway (TRA)?

Taiwan Railway Train - Travelling Around Taiwan

The Taiwan Railway (TRA) is slower than the HSR since it takes on more stops but if you’re in no hurry, it’s a great alternative to save you more money. Here’s a table comparing the approximate travel time and fare between the TRA, and the THSR.

Use the Taiwan Railway fare calculator to check how much it will take to get to your destination.

Screenshot of TRA Fare Calculator - THSR Pass

*Pro-tip: The schedule inquiry tool helps you find out which TRA train/s passes by your destination. Then compare this number with how much you’d be spending via the THSR by viewing their fare table .

Also, note that booking of TRA trains can only be done at physical TRA counters if you’re using the Joint Pass.

Which THSR Pass should I get?

Holding THSR Pass - Taiwan High Speed Rail

There are four types of THSR passes, all with unlimited access to the Taiwan High-Speed Rail which runs along the West Coast. The biggest difference is the number of days they are valid for, and whether or not it has access to Taiwan Railway trains, which allow you to explore both the East and West Coasts of Taiwan .

How do I purchase a THSR Pass?

Redeeming THSR Pass at Counter - THSR Guide

Passes can be purchased online so you can make seat reservations early!

I booked my 3-Day THSR Pass via Klook which made it easier to redeem once I got to Taiwan. After purchase, they emailed me a voucher with a redemption code. All I had to do was present the voucher along with my passport at a THSR station ticket counter.

The process was quick, and eliminated the need for any long back and forth with any personnel at the ticket counter!

If you’re planning to pre-book your tickets, you can redeem your pass online from the THSR official website before your trip. Click on the Manage tab and key in the redemption code which you can find in your Klook electronic voucher.

However, you’ll still have to collect your physical pass from a THSR ticket counter (with your passport and accompanying entry document) to board the train.

For flexible day passes (e.g. Flexible 2-Day Pass ), you’ll have to confirm at the ticket counter which days you’ll be utilising the pass.

To be absolutely sure that you’re taking the right train, check the timetable on the Taiwan High-Speed Rail’s official website to plan your itinerary!

THSR Schedule above Ticket Counter - THSR Pass

Every THSR station has signboards scattered throughout the station (above the ticket counter and beside the escalator) detailing the route that the trains will take. You will be able to find their expected departure and arrival times through them.

How do I reserve seats?

Ticket Counter Monitor - THSR Guide

For rides over an hour long, like from Taoyuan to Tainan, make sure to book your seat reservations early — all the THSR passes come with free unlimited seat reservations.

We visited Taiwan during an off-peak season so we didn’t need to reserve until the morning of our train departure. But during the holidays, the train can get pretty full so we recommend reserving your seat at least 36 hours ahead.

You can reserve a seat within 90 days from the day your voucher was issued (even before collecting the physical pass), up till an hour before train departure.

Online: Make a reservation through the Manage tab of the official website .

Physical: You can also just head to the ticket counter to reserve a seat, instead of doing it online. They will update your physical pass with details about your departure.

*Pro-tip: Only three cars (Cars 10 to 12) are allotted for free seating, and they can get pretty full during the holidays. Be sure to reserve early!

Once you’ve gotten your physical THSR Pass, simply present your pass to the officer at the gates, along with your passport, and valid entry document (if applicable) to them and they will open a gate for you! You will need this every time you hop on the THSR train.

Good if you can add that Joint THSR pass do not offer online booking for TRA trains, it has to be done physically at counter, this information might come handy while planning well in advance (like i learned the hard way…:) )

Hi Tash, thanks for the comment! We’ll update our article to include booking TRA at physical counters. Hope your trip went well despite that 🙂

ALISHAN TO CHIAYI by DIRECT BUS & TRAIN: Schedule & Fares

ALISHAN TO CHIAYI by DIRECT BUS & TRAIN: Schedule & Fares

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

After enjoying all the wondrous things that Alishan has to offer, it’s time to get out of the scenic area. While there are direct buses connecting Alishan to other key destinations like Taipei, Taichung, and even Sun Moon Lake, the most popular route is by getting back to Chiayi City and taking the train from there.

To get to Chiayi City, there are two common routes: by direct bus to Chiayi and by taking the bus to Fenqihu then train to Chiayi.

Whatever you prefer, this article will give you the information you need to reach Chiayi hassle-free.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

BY DIRECT BUS

One of the main attractions in Alishan is its vintage railway network, especially the Alishan Express train . If it’s your first time, you must try it on the way to the forest park area. But one journey should be enough to experience the Alishan Express train.

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

If you arrived in Alishan by train, no need to take it on your way back to Chiayi City. For that, I recommend taking the direct bus instead for these reasons.

  • It’s faster. It takes less than 2 hours.
  • It’s cheaper. The direct bus fare costs TWD 240-278. But the bus + train journey will cost you a total of almost TWD 500.
  • It’s more convenient. No need to make any transfer. The bus will drop you off at either the TRA train station or the THSR train station (depending on the bus you book).
  • You have more options. Over 10 direct buses ply the Alishan-Chiayi route per day. But only 3 Alishan-Fenqihu buses are available per day and only up to 3 Fenqihu-Chiayi trains (only one on weekdays).
  • It’s more ideal for short-term visitors. Direct buses will allow you to spend more time in Alishan. – If you’re on a day trip, the direct bus will allow you to stay longer. The last direct bus leaves Alishan at around 5:00pm, while the last train departs from Fenqihu at 2:30pm on weekdays and 3:00pm on weekends/holidays. – If you’re staying overnight in Alishan, you probably would try to catch the village’s celebrated sunrise, which means you’ll have to wake up really early. By taking the direct bus, you can sleep uninterrupted, without transfers.

To catch the bus, you need to make your way to the Alishan Bus Station, right outside the recreation area (near the gate). Inside 7-Eleven, you will find a side counter that sells bus tickets. Just approach that counter. You know you’re at the right spot if you see bus information on the desk.

There are two Chiayi-bound direct routes from here: to the TRA Station and to the THSR Station. Here are the schedules and fares.

Alishan to Chiayi TRA Station

Fare: TWD 240 (adult), TWD 120 (child, concession)

  • 13:40 (1:40 pm)
  • 14:10 (2:10 pm)
  • 14:40 (2:40 pm)
  • 15:10 (3:10 pm)
  • 15:40 (3:40 pm)
  • 16:10 (4:10 pm)
  • 17:10 (5:10 pm)

The ticket looks like this:

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

Alishan to Chiayi THSR Station

Fare: TWD 278 (adult), TWD 139 (child, concession)

  • 13:30 (1:30 pm)
  • 16:40 (4:40 pm)

If you wish to take the Alishan Express train to Chiayi City, you need to catch a connecting bus to Fenqihu first. This is a good option if didn’t take the vintage train getting to Alishan or you simply wish to ride it again.

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

You can also take the train at Shizilu Station instead of Fenqihu, but I don’t have information on that. Fenqihu remains the more preferred route for more visitors.

Here’s how to do it.

Alishan to Fenqihu by Bus

You can catch the bus bound for Fenqihu at the Alishan Bus Station, just outside the recreation area (near the gate). During my visit, no need to pre-purchase tickets. You can simply hand your payment to the driver. Make sure you have the exact amount because they don’t give change.

Fare: TWD 98 (adult), TWD 49 (concession, child)

You will be dropped off near the Fenqihu Forest Railway Station, where you’ll board the Alishan Express train to Chiayi City.

Fenqihu to Chiayi City

Fenqihu is NOT the first station so make sure you are there before the departure time. The train will only wait for less than 10 minutes to pick up passengers.

Here’s the schedule:

  • 14:30 (2:30 pm) – daily
  • 15:00 (3:00 pm) – Saturdays, Sundays, holidays only

Travel time: roughly 2.5 hours. Fare: TWD 384, adult; TWD 192, child.

The train terminates at Chiayi TRA station. Emphasis on TRA. If you need to catch a high-speed train to get to your final destination, you need to transfer to the THSR Station which is 30 minutes away.

TOP HOTELS IN ALISHAN

Lodging options in Alishan are quite limited. They’re usually much more expensive than accommodations in other parts of Taiwan. Some hotels also don’t have elevators, so make sure you express your preference for a lower level if you’re not fit. Check in time is usually between 3pm and 4pm.

Tourist Shuttle Bus from Taipei to Shifen with 6 DIY Tour Itineraries + Travel Packages GIVEAWAY!

*Scroll to the end of the post for the winners' list!

*If you are one of the 18 winners, please email me at [email protected] for details on prize collection. Thanks!

If you are planning a trip to Taiwan this or next year, read on because there's now an easier way to get around - PLUS, you may just win a travel package too! 😁

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

The last time we visited Taipei, Taiwan was in 2008 and I've got the photo to prove it.

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

This was taken more than 15 years ago - and Ale wasn't even born then!😱

Since then, a lot have changed but some of the attractions within Taipei and New Taipei City remain popular with tourists... like Jiufen, Yehliu Geopark, Wulai Hot Springs, Pingxi, Shifen and many more!

But truth is, if you are not self-driving, it can get a little tricky to get to the outlying areas in New Taipei City. Visitors, especially families with kids, usually hire a private driver or join a day tour. So it is not really straightforward to move around on your own.

BUT GREAT NEWS! Did you know there is now a Tourist Shuttle Bus service that takes you from Taipei all the way to Shifen? Plus, it makes stops along the way at major tourist attractions too!

Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 795 (台灣好行795) lets tourists conveniently board at the bus stop at Muzha MRT Station (Exit 2) and they will be able to hop on and off the bus at various stops like Jingtong Keng, Pingxi Old Street, Tianzi, Qinghe or Shifenliao (Old Street).

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

How convenient is that???

Some of the highlights that Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 795 stops at include:

A2 Shenkeng Old Street

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

Shenkeng Old Street boasts a hundred-year-old tofu culture and is famous for “The Tofu Town” and the distribution center of Tamsui-Kavaian South Trails.

A3-1 Wenshan Coal Mine

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

Located at Zhong Min village of Shiding district, Wenshan Coal Mine was a famous coal mine field of Greater Wenshan area. From Wenshan Coal Mine along Shi Ba Zhong stream, you can walk about 300 meters and arrive at Sun Gertain Eco Farm B&B and Fireflies’ Bookhouse.

A5 Jingtong Keng

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

Head to “Jingtong Sky Lantern Pavilion”, where a 9-metre tall Sky Lantern-shaped awaits. Made of glass and using 200 thousand LED lamps, travellers write down their wishes on cards and watch them appear on the sky lantern during the 7-min sky lantern show.

A6 Pingxi Old Street

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

Featured in the movie, "Your Are the Apple of My Eye" (那些年,我們一起追的女孩), Pingxi Old Street exudes old charm, complete with the stone-covered roads. You will also find the oldest mailbox in Taiwan here!

A9 Shifenliao

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

During the Pingxi mining period in the past.Shifen was the earliest and the largest village. Not only is Shifen Old Street popular with tourists, it is also popular with those who are looking to release sky lanterns.

A10 Shifen Visitor Center

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

The most famous attraction here has to be “Shifen Waterfall Park”, otherwise known as the Taiwan version of Niagara waterfalls.

And the most convenient thing about visiting all of these attractions is you just have to hop onto the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 795!

taiwan tourist shuttle 7322

To further enhance your experience, the  New Taipei City Government Tourism Bureau  has introuduced 'TK Trails' which consists of 6 package tour itineraries titled [ 穿越淡蘭—悠遊深石平] .

The various tour itineraries will take travellers to explore different cultures and enjoy a leisurely discovery of the towns of Shenkeng, Shiding, and Pingxi in partnership of 39 local partners.

Of the six tour itineraries, I highly recommend the following two:

Danlan Tea Road Travel Package ― Crossing the Southern Route of TK Trails

穿越淡兰南路|百年茶道行旅

Explore the ecology of Shiding and cross the Southern Route of TK Trails with a 200-year-old Tea Road History!

Mountain Scenery

The most prominent landmark of Xiding, it reaches 1,050 meters in height.

Looked at from above it resembles a huge elephant (Xiang) with the head, trunk and back all clearly visible. According to older locals, in earlier times if a boom was heard coming from the mountain when the weather was good there was a good chance that the weather would change for the worse and, vice versa, if the boom was heard when the weather was bad it was likely to get better.
