Rookie‘s call-up, veteran’s recall confirmed as spin-heavy Aussie Test squad for India revealed

Australia has named a four-pronged spin attack for its four-Test tour of India, including 22-year-old spin sensation Todd Murphy who is in line to make his debut.

An 18-man squad for the tour, beginning on February 9, was revealed on Thursday with Murphy included with fellow spinners Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitch Swepson.

Like Agar, batsman Matt Renshaw retains his place in the squad after being called up for the New Year’s Test. Peter Handscomb, a veteran of sub-continental conditions is recalled and in line to make his first Test appearance since 2019 — however News Corp reports he could be in doubt because of an injury suffered playing park cricket on Tuesday.

“Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A. With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option,”chief Australian selector George Bailey said.

“Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development.

“... Peter Handscomb deserves his place back in the squad,” Bailey said. “His domestic form has been strong recently and Pete has proven he can perform at Test level.

“His experience against spin on the subcontinent is valuable and he is also an exceptionally good close to the wicket catcher.”

Victorian Murphy is viewed as the second-best spinner in Australia, according to News Corp , and could play alongside Lyon should selectors choose to name two in the best XI.

But former Aussie paceman Michael Kasprowicz fears debuting Murphy could be dangerous for the 22-year-old.

He instead believes Swepson, who he watched while commentating of Australia’s tour of Pakistan last year, will “go really well if the conditions and opportunity presents itself”.

Swepson and Murphy are likely bidding for Agar’s spot in the side after his wicketless performance at the SCG against South Africa — although Bailey has suggested he is a strong starting option.

“Ashton Agar continues to impress following his comeback in Sydney and we believe left-arm finger spin will play an important role in Indian conditions,” Bailey said.

Handscomb, if fit, and Renshaw will provide batting options with Cameron Green racing the clock to return from his broken finger, while Mitchell Starc will miss at least the first Test in Nagpur beginning on February 9.

Uncapped quick Lance Morris retains his place in the squad and could be a chance for an international debut.

Opener Marcus Harris, who featured in the squad over the summer but did not play, and spinner Adam Zampa were among the unlucky omissions.

The question of whether to blood Murphy, play Agar or ignore a second spinner altogether remains the largest question hanging over Aussie selection.

“Don’t do it (debut Murphy) in India,” Kasprowicz told the Nine papers . “They are the best players of spin in the world. There’s a temptation when you turn up to a spinning wicket … you end up finding that bowlers try too hard for their wickets.

“This whole search for spin (in India) ... there’s a bit of a myth about that. The best spinner ever was Warnie. His record in India wasn’t fabulous. He’s bowling against the best players of spin in the world in their conditions. That was the other side of it. As far as spin bowlers, you don’t need to overthink it. You’ve got to almost simplify it.

“I spoke to (ex-Indian coach) Ravi Shastri during the IPL years ago. I asked what’s the secret in India in the subcontinent. He said it’s all about accuracy. He said it’s not about the flight or dip … it’s about getting it in that right area and the pitch naturally gives you variation. I’m excited about this series because someone like Nathan Lyon has been there and done it all before.

“I think Travis Head’s off-spin is pretty cool. If he is coming in for five or 10 overs in a day, if the wicket is turning, he’s going to do a good job.”

Australia needs just one win in India to lock up a spot in the World Test Championship final this June in England.

Uncapped spinner Todd Murphy has bolted into Australia’s Test squad for the tour of India, as selectors confirmed an 18-player squad for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

He joins Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson as options to partner frontline spinner Nathan Lyon on a tour that is expected to feature low, slow, turning wickets.

Swepson has been retained after struggling on Australia’s tour of Pakistan last year — kept in favour of what would be a shock call up for white-ball specialist Adam Zampa.

Victorian Sheffield Shield captain Peter Handscomb has also joined the touring party alongside Matthew Renshaw, despite retiring hurt after a hit to the hip playing for St Kilda in a grade fixture on Tuesday night.

Murphy had only played one first-class fixture prior to 2022, but has rocketed into contention after strong performances for Victoria, Australia A and the Prime Minister’s XI.

At 22, he is viewed as a potential long-term successor to the ageing Nathan Lyon, who to date has not found a sustainable second spinner to partner him.

Murphy currently has 14 wickets to his name at an average of 17.71 over just three Sheffield Shield matches, and bowled Victoria to a final-day win over New South Wales in the last match before the Big Bash.

“Todd has emerged as a strong spin option, having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A”, said chief selector George Bailey.

“Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development.”

Opener Marcus Harris, released from the Test squad after the recall of Matthew Renshaw for the New Year’s Test, has been omitted, while uncapped WA quick Lance Morris retains his place in the squad.

The tour is shaping as a potential debut opportunity for Morris, with Mitchell Starc confirmed to not be joining the squad until after the first Test in Nagpur with an injured finger.

Allrounder Cameron Green is also racing the clock to be fit with a fractured finger sustained in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa.

As foreshadowed by captain Pat Cummins in Sydney, left arm spinner Ashton Agar has been included despite going wicketless in the final Test against South Africa .

Queensland bowler Michael Neser has also been snubbed in favour of Victorian Scott Boland, while West Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis misses out as well.

In the event of injury to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Peter Handscomb will likely take the gloves.

Australia and India will play four Tests in less than two months in Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad.

Australia has not won in India since their famous 2004 series victory under Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting.

New Delhi: Almost 24 hours after their dominant show of skills against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 finals, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and the BCCI selection committee Chief Ajit Agarkar, will be holding a joint press conference to announce the 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia later this month.

squad for australia tour of india

The primary question which everyone will be having will be, whether Rohit Sharma would like to go with the same squad that represented India in the Asia Cup and will also be representing the team in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, later this year or will they rest their main players to manage their workload management.

If the sources are to be trusted, players like Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and the skipper Rohit Sharma will be rested to keep them fresh for the all-important ODI World Cup 2023.

The series will also decide the fate of injury-bound Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel, who are currently on the sidelines due to injury. Washington Sundar replaced injured Axar Patel in the Asia Cup finals against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The squad announcement will be done at 08:30 p.m. Hrs, IST, in a press conference addressing the media personnel.

Notably, India will be playing a three-match ODI series against Australia at home, starting September 24.

Will Ravi Shastri coach an IPL team? Ex-India captain responds to R Ashwin's query

Ipl 2024: former india head coach ravi shastri said he did not want an ipl job soon after his tenure with the senior national team ended in 2021. the legendary all-rounder said he would be keen on working with young talents in the ipl, if and when he decides to take up a role with a franchise..

Ravi Shastri

  • Ravi Shastri has never coached an IPL side
  • Shastri was a successful head coach of the senior national men's team
  • Shastri returned to commentary after the end of his coaching tenure in 2021

Former India head coach and World Cup winner Ravi Shastri said he is not ruling out the possibility of coaching an Indian Premier League (IPL) side in the future. Shastri said he might not get into the job anytime soon but if and when he does, it would be to work with the young talents in the country and not because of monetary benefits.

Speaking to R Ashwin in his latest YouTube show, Ravi Shastri lauded the wide spread of talent in the country and that he has always been excited by the prospect of mentoring young players. The former India captain said he did not want to take up an IPL coaching stint after the end of his coaching tenure with the senior national team in 2021 , adding he wanted to stay away from the dressing rooms for a period time.

"Not really. Not after doing India for 7 years. You never know what can come up in the future and how involved you are going to get," Shastri said when asked if considering taking up a role with an IPL franchise after 2021.

"You know, there is no doubting the experience you have and what you can bring to the table, but after 7 years with the Indian team, especially those times -- you were there -- the toughest time that game has seen since the World War II -- during Covid, quarantine and the bubbles, you just wanted ta break from the dugout, the dressing room and everything. The broadcasting and the mic gave me the freedom to express myself again. And have some fun," Shastri added.

IT'S NOT JUST THE MONEY: SHASTRI

Shastri expressed his love for mentoring youngsters, saying being around with budding talents, including the likes of Rishabh Pant, was a rewarding experience for him during his tenure as the head coach.

"You don't rule that out. Once you have been involved with the game and played the game and you wanted to contribute to the youth, then that will always linger in your mind. It's not just the money part of it, but also the contributing factor. How you can get into the heads of the young kids and pass on the knowledge you have before you forget it yourself?

"If I ever go there, it will be precisely for that reason. Not to see the superstars carrying on the way they are, but to cultivate, identify and groom talent, and take them through the roof.

"I will enjoy it because the spread is so much these days, they have complexes, they have language barriers and challenges culturally. And then get them together to play fearless cricket and ruthless cricket is my cup of tea. So never discount that, it would always be the case when you are handling youngsters," he added.

Notably, Shastri returned to the commentary box after his coaching stint. The former cricketer is still one of the most sough-after broadcasters, not just in India but across the globe. Published By: Akshay Ramesh Published On: May 13, 2024

Arjun Tendulkar 's aggressive gesture sparked a cheeky response from Australian cricket team star Marcus Stoinis during the IPL 2024 match between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants on Friday. During the second over of the LSG innings, Arjun trapped Stoinis LBW but the decision was overturned by the third umpire. On the first ball of the over, Stoinis hit the ball directly back to Arjun who aggressively picked it up and pretended to throw it towards the stumps. The act resulted in a cheeky smile from Stoinis who shouted something towards the young fast bowler.

Coming to the match, Nicholas Pooran played another explosive knock while Ravi Bishnoi and Naveen-ul-Haq took two wickets each as LSG defeated MI by 18 runs.

"Quite difficult. Did not play good quality cricket, eventually costed us the whole season. It's a professional world. Have to always come out and put our best foot forward. But yes, as a group we could not play quality cricket or smart cricket. Too early to point out what went wrong. The whole season kind of went wrong. We can pass this game as another one (that went wrong)," MI captain Hardik Pandya said.

The result means that LSG are sixth at the moment in the points table while MI finished last.

" It's been a tough season for us, good to get a win and end on a higher note. The end goal was to go to the playoffs and give it a shot, nonetheless to end the season on a winning note is pleasing. Fielding is related to fitness and whatever hard work is a reflection of that. [on the last over fielding effort of his] I went for it and saved it," Krunal Pandya said after the match.
