Cruise founder Kyle Vogt is back with a robot startup

Kyle Vogt, the former founder and CEO of self-driving car company Cruise, has a new VC-backed robotics startup focused on household chores.

Vogt announced Monday that the new startup, called the Bot Company, has raised $150 million from former GitHub CEO and investor Nat Friedman, Pioneer founder and investor Daniel Gross, Spark Capital general partner Nabeel Hyatt, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Stripe co-founder John Collison and Quiet Capital.

Vogt founded the startup with Paril Jain, who led the AI tech team at Tesla, and former Cruise software engineer Luke Holoubek.

“We’re building bots that do chores so you don’t have to. Everyone is busy. Bots can help,” Vogt wrote on social media X . “So many things compete for our time — commutes, longer working hours, and the complexities of modern life. Our team has spent years building robots (including the self-driving kind) that give people some of that time back, and we’re taking that a step further with this company.”

Vogt did not respond to a request for comment.

The new endeavor comes five months after Vogt resigned as CEO of Cruise , the autonomous vehicle startup that he founded in 2013 and was later acquired by General Motors. His resignation followed an October 2 incident that saw a Cruise vehicle run over and drag a pedestrian 20 feet, after the pedestrian had been hit by a human-driven car. The event, coupled with the company’s response, prompted California regulators to suspend Cruise’s deployment and driverless testing permits, effectively  ending its robotaxi operations  in the state where the bulk of its operations were located.

Since his resignation, Vogt has maintained a relatively low public profile. His return, however, shouldn’t surprise those who have followed his career. Prior to Cruise, Vogt had co-founded Justin.tv, a website that allowed anyone to broadcast video online; it later morphed into Twitch, a live-streaming platform acquired by Amazon in 2014 for $970 million. He also founded Socialcam, which was acquired by Autodesk for $60 million in 2012.

HIT REPEAT: Chanel plans to stage a repeat showing of its cruise 2025 collection in Hong Kong on Nov. 5, cementing the city’s return to the international stage.

“This event seals historic ties with the city and celebrates Chanel ’s attachment to Hong Kong SAR as well as the vibrancy and modernity of its culture,” the French luxury brand said in a statement on Monday.

But the cancellation of the Dior men’s pre-fall show, due to take place on March 23 in the run-up to Art Basel Hong Kong, shook confidence in its comeback .  

Chanel’s cruise 2025 line was presented in Marseille on May 2 on the rooftop of the Cité Radieuse, one of the flagship midcentury housing projects of architect Le Corbusier, in front of celebrities including Lily-Rose Depp, Charlotte Casiraghi and Phoebe Tonkin.

Speaking before the event, Bruno Pavlovsky , president of fashion and president of Chanel SAS, said he had just returned from a trip to China.

He reported that domestic spending there was down as Chinese nationals resume traveling abroad, but said Chanel’s overall business with Chinese consumers continues to increase. Pavlovsky, who stopped over in Hong Kong during the trip, said the repeat show would be staged in an urban setting.

“Our business is excellent, we have important projects,” he said, pointing to sustained demand from local residents and visitors from mainland China. “Hong Kong will remain a very important center of activity for us in China.” 

The local authority has been investing heavily in bringing global attention back to the city through a cultural lens, particularly with the 2022 establishment of a Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau.

In 2023, the city’s gross domestic product grew by 3.2 percent following a 3.5 percent contraction the previous year. The city benefited from a rise of inbound tourism and retail spending, but its growth was hampered by China’s lackluster post-pandemic recovery.

Last year, Chanel held its repeat cruise show in Shenzhen , marking its first major event in mainland China since before the pandemic.

Salma Hayek sat front row at the Gucci cruise 2025 fashion show in London on Monday in metallic platform sandals that towered over the models’ ballet flats and loafers.

The actor’s shoes featured a sleek mirror-look finish and approximately 6-inch block heel and two-inch platform. The on-trend footwear had a slim ankle strap and rounded open-toe design. The shoes coordinated perfectly with her silver Gucci handbag.

The “Frida” actor is big fan of towering platforms, which she often wears to elevate her five-foot-two-inch frame. At the 60th Venice Biennale Pre-opening Dinner in April, she wore a similar pair of platforms in black patent leather. She was an early adopter of the metallic trend, donning a pair of silver Aquazzura platform sandals with crisscross straps from to attend her brother Sami Hayek’s art opening last November .

The star-studded event was a chance for Sabato De Sarno to showcase his latest collection for Gucci, inspired by English style and gardens, with a touch of Princess Diana. Fittingly, the event was held at the Tate Modern in London, where the industrial basement was transformed into a lush paradise, filled with around 10,000 green plants the fashion house will donate to local community projects.

The Gucci cruise 2025 collection offers a dreamy mix of sheer pastels with brown and black suede caplets and oversized jackets. Square-toed Horsebit ballet flats, along with their iconic Horsebit loafer, dominated the show’s footwear.

Metallic Shoe Trend

Metallic shoes , especially in gold and silver tones, started to take over fashion in 2022, and really took off in fall 2023. The style has continued to gain a consistent spot in designers’ collections since then. Several high-end labels like Bottega Veneta, Prada and Manolo Blahnik have included the shiny material in their runway shoes over the past couple of months.

Popular metallic heeled styles include the $1,150 Valentino Garavani metallic leather stiletto pumps and the Jimmy Choo Ixia pumps, priced at $683.

Platform Sandals

Platforms have made a comeback in recent years, from chunky elevated sneakers and sandals to pumps and heeled sandals. Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Gucci, Christian Louboutin and other luxury designers currently offer several platform sandal styles. The elevated sole helps compensate for the height of the heel, allowing for more height than a traditional pump without any added discomfort. Platform sandals are predicted by many to be a dominant trend throughout the spring and summer of 2024.

LONDON (AP) — For one night only, the utilitarian, concrete basement of London’s Tate Modern museum was transformed into a lush green jungle — and it was the hottest fashion ticket in town.

Luxury Italian fashion house Gucci hosted its star-studded cruise collection catwalk at the Thames-side modern art museum Monday, showing a series of delicate sheer outfits, relaxed denim and daywear, all adorned with the brand’s coveted leather bags and other accessories with the double-G logo.

Singers Dua Lipa and Solange Knowles were on the front row with supermodel Kate Moss and her daughter Lila, along with actors Demi Moore, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. Also in attendance were Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is chair and CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company.

It was a big-budget event and the first cruise collection by Sabato De Sarno, who was named Gucci’s creative director last year and debuted his womenswear designs in September.

Gucci normally stages its shows in Milan, but like other fashion powerhouses it chooses locations around the world to show off its cruise, or resort, collections — the shows in between the main spring and autumn displays. Last year’s destination was the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea.

On Monday, models meandered down a runway that wound its way around hundreds of ferns, overhanging plants and mossy paths, the mass of green a contrast to the grey, industrial show space. De Sarno said that contrast extends to his latest designs, which paired luxurious evening looks and floral embroidery with casual jackets and slouchy denim.

And what of the footwear? Comfort comes first, with all outfits, even the most glamorous evening gowns, paired with Mary Jane shoes, ballet flats or platform loafers worn with little white socks.

“Rigor and extravagance, strength in delicacy, Englishness with an Italian accent,” the show notes read.

De Sarno featured a few checked jackets in a nod to British style, though some other designs were a much more subtle tribute. Dresses and coats covered with squares made of a shimmering bead fringe were a reference to Scottish plaids.

Titled “We’ll always have London,” the show was partly a love letter to the British capital, which the brand says plays a key role in its founding story more than a century ago. Its founder, Guccio Gucci, traveled to London as a teenager and had a stint working as a bellhop in the Savoy, the luxury London hotel.

The brand says Guccio took inspiration from that experience when he opened his first store in Florence in 1921 to sell luggage. The rest, as they say, is history.

However, the president isn't expected to pick up the state in November's general election. In 2020, Trump secured a 19-point lead over Biden in Nebraska. Still, Biden managed to secure one electoral vote from the state's 2nd Congressional District, which allocates its electoral votes based upon its own voters.

Nebraska offers a total of 29 delegates for the Democrats in 2024. Biden has already surpassed the threshold of delegates required to secure the Democratic nomination and will cement that status at the party's national convention in August.

Biden on Tuesday also picked up delegates in Maryland and West Virginia. While ruby-red West Virginia is expected to opt for the Republican candidate in the fall, Biden will likely win Maryland in the 2024 general election.
