Satkosia is a famous tiger reserve. It spreads over the mighty river Mahanadi in Odisha. The wildlife sanctuary established here in the year 1976. It is located at Angul district. The reserve has an area of 963.87sq km with 523.61sq km as core area. The Reserve is spread over 4 districts like Angul, Cuttack, Nayagarh and Boudh.

Satkosia houses a variety of wildlife such as elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, nilgai, mouse deer, wild goats, sloth bears, sambar, spotted deer, giant squirrels and four-horned antelopes. It is also a home to the gharials, fresh water turtles, mugger crocodiles and snakes of different species. The area is also a part of the Mahanadi elephant reserve. The govt. has given permission of tourism only for 269 square kilometers of the total area of the reserve.

It is a good place for the wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, scientists and adventure freaks, in a similar manner. The Angul region is comparatively hilly and houses dense groves, moist and dry deciduous forests and vibrant flowers like Khalsi and Genwa. Apart from exploring the forests for various kinds of animals, one can also enjoy the scenic views and can go for trekking, elephant rides, night safaris and boating which are provided by the Forest Department.

Baghmunda , is the home area of the tigers. This is a tourist attraction for the tigers. Tourist can see different types of tiger here.

The Athamallik-Chhendipada-Telkoi corridor , Satkosia-Khalasuni corridor and Kapilas-Rebena corridor is three main hallways one can go. Through this hallway the elephants travel and which can be mainly seen by the tourists.

Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary in Orissa, India is a popular tourist destination that attracts many from far and wide. This is the housing place of gharials. This is a place with a wide variety of indigenous as well as migratory birds. This is a great place for the bird lovers.

Labangi is located near Tikarpada and is famous for trekking. One can see various animals at the Takarsingha water hole that is located near to Labangi.

Satkosia is without a doubt one of Odisha’s most stunning ecosystems. It is a tiger reserve and a breeding center for freshwater crocodiles, gharial, and muggers, as well as having a spectacular gorge across the River Mahanadi. The Baisipalli Sanctuary is a short distance away. The Satkosia Tiger Reserve is made up of two wildlife sanctuaries: Satkosia Gorge and Baisipalli, which are spread across four districts: Angul, Nayagarh, Cuttack, and Boudh. The tiger reserve covers an area of 963.87 square kilometers, but the core area is only 523.61 square kilometers..

Tikarapada, Chhotakei, and Purunakote are the three entrance sites of Satkosia. Freshwater turtles such as Chitra indica and Aspidiretes gangeticus, as well as enormous gharials and muggers lazing in the sun on the riverbank, can be seen while boating in the authorized region of Mahanadi towards the gorge. The river is flanked on both sides by beautiful mountains. Even though there are forest rest homes in Chhotakei and Purunakote, the 10 eco-tents in Tikarpada, which are maintained by a group of tribal youths from Tikarpada village employed by the forest department for the purpose, are the most beautiful lodging units in Satkosia.

The youths are extremely friendly and helpful; they not only maintain the tents and lead guided nature treks through the forest, but they also cook for the visitors. They catch freshwater fish from the river on request and cook them in an open kitchen for visitors. Tourists can visit Tikarpada’s Gharial Research and Conservation Unit, which raises young sub-adult gharials in captivity. The Satkosia Wildlife Division has established a similar facility in Tarava village, where local communities host nature enthusiasts. Reservations for the forest rest houses and eco-tents can be made at  www.satkosia.org . The Satkosia eco-system is approximately 200 kilometers from Bhubaneswar, which has the closest airport link. If traveling by road from Bhubaneswar, take the NH-6 to Cuttack and then the NH-42 to Dhenkanal and Angul. To enter Satkosia, obtain a permit at the Divisional Forest Office in Angul and then proceed to Pampasar, the main entry gate. To visit Satkosia, you must first obtain a permit from the Divisional Forest Office in Angul, then travel to Pampasar, the main entry gate.

Since the camping site is close to Satkosia Tiger Reserve , one can hear the chirping of the birds and the occasional alarm calls of animals, which makes you realize you are close to a reserve forest.

Here luxury blends perfectly with the serenity of nature to offer something for everyone. Tourists can spend evenings watching the local folk dance along with a bonfire and open sky dinner, while kids can play volleyball, go trekking, build sand castles and engage in bird watching.

Ansupa Lake - Located 50 km from Cuttack and situated in the middle of the state highway connecting Athagarh and Banki block of Cuttack district, Ansupa lake is spread over 382 km, and is the largest fresh water lake in Odisha. It derives its name from the shape which is like a horse shoe (ansupa). During the rainy season, the many colours of the water provide a beautiful sight and the presence of the migratory birds during winter adds to the vibrancy of the lake. For a memorable experience, visitors can enjoy boating at the lake.

Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary – Situated near the Tikarpada village, the wildlife sanctuary is famous for its scenic gorge and a gharial crocodile sanctuary. The Mahanadi flowing through the gorge stretching 22 km makes for an awe inspiring sight. A haven for wildlife enthusiasts, the sanctuary is the sighting place of tigers, leopards, gaurs, simbal, spotted deer, four horned antelopes, sloths, etc.

Nilamadhav Temple : A very old and famous Vishnu temple in Kantilo (Nayagarh, Odisha) Nilamadhav is situated on the bank of river Mahanadi, and is surrounded by the twin hills and forests. Set amid great natural beauty, this religious place for Hindus attracts devotees from all over the country.

Kuanria Deer Park and Dam – An extremely picturesque getaway, approximately 50 kms from Nayagarh, Kuanria comprises of a huge reservoir and a 1.5 km long dam over river Kuanria. Another major attraction is a large deer park that is spread over 6 acres, and provides natural habitat to nearly 160 spotted deer, barking deer and sambars. A large number of migratory birds also flock to this reservoir during the winter season.

Kapilash Temple  - Located in the beautiful district of Dhenkanal , Kapilash temple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of Odisha. The temple lies at a distance of 26 km from the district headquarters and is easily commutable by road. Kapilash temple was constructed by the King Narasinghdeva I of Ganga Dynasty and is known for its alluring design.

Saptasajya, Dhenkanal – A quaint village in Dhenkanal district of Odisha, Saptasajya gets its name from the surrounding 7 hills, and is popularly known for the temple of Raghunath, built in honour of Lord Rama, Laxman and Sita. Every year a large number of devotees visit this temple on the occasion of Ramanavami. Saptasajya is situated at a distance of 11 km to the south of Dhenkanal town.

Cuttack City - Situated on a peninsula with river Mahanadi on one side and river Kathajodi on the other, Cuttack is one of the oldest cities of Odisha. It is known for its unique silver filigree works (Tarakasi), woven textiles and horn works. Famous for its Dussehra celebrations across India, the city attracts tourists in herds.  

The name ‘ Satkosia’ means 7 Kos (a unit of distance measurement). It is also known as the ‘Gorge Sanctuary’ and the place bursts into vibrant hues with diverse flora and fauna. Satkosia is a much sought after destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Northen Side

               Chhotkei Nature Camp is the community run nature camps located at 8 kms away from Purunakote. It speaks of conservation awareness, education and provides immense nature camping experiences to visitors. It is managed by Eco-tourism group of Chhotkei. Besides catering facilities, optional activities, like boating along the Mahanadi river, nature trekking, bird watching are the part of the programme.

                  Tariff: Rs. 2000/- per person / day ( Rs. 500.00 extra for 1 person) ( Entry fee Extra)

                  Check In : 11 am , Check Out: 10 am.

                   Tikarapada Nature Camp giving intense nature camping experience, overnight stay is fascinating and unforgettable.Camps have double bedded tents having toilets with running water supported with security and catering arrangements. Camps run by community managed eco-tourism group (TIPPS ). Apart from stay in the camp, the following activities are packaged as part of the programme:-Boating (in permissible area) on the river Mahanadi and viewing the majestic gorge and towering mountains on the both sides, one can sight plenty of crocodiles basking on the sand banks.Nature walking: Nature lovers and bird watchers can walk around and discover the unspoiled wilderness through the nature trail.

                  Tariff: Rs. 1700/- / Two Persons/ Day (Inclusive food & stay ) Entry fee extra.

                  Check in : 11 am Check out: 10 am.

                   Purunakote Nature Camp: Cottages & Tents with thatched roof are available for a pleasant stay. Wild animals can be seen around this camp. One may get chance to encounter indigenous hill myna, sambar, giant squirrel.Besides Catering facilities, optional activities like Boating (in permissible area along the Mahanadi River), Nature trekking, Camp Fire are the part of the programme on payment of extra charge. It is managed by Purunakote Eco-tourism group.

                      Tariff: Rs. 1000/- / Two person/ Day ( Exclusive of fooding, entry fee)

Southern Side

                      Chhamundia- One Forest Rest House with two suites is at Chhamundia is there under the administrative control of Divisional Forest Officer, Mahanadi Wildlife Division. One can avail to stay there with prior permission of DFO. Tariff per day is Rs.500/- per suite. No catering facility is available.

                       Kuanria- At the out skirt of Satkosia Tiger Reserve, one Forest Rest House with two suites is there under administrative control of Divisional Forest Officer, Mahanadi Wildlife Division. One can avail to stay there with prior permission of DFO.Tariff per day per suite is Rs. 500/- No catering facility is available. One can avail the opportunity of visiting the deer park just adjoining to the Forest Rest House, Kuanria dam and also the scenic beauty of virgin nature nearby. Kuanria dam is a paradise of water birds almost in all weather.it the deer park and Interpretation centre at Kuanria and there from Baisipalli Sanctuary can be visited to enjoy the virginity of nature with very rich biodiversity.

Tourist bus catches fire in Haryana's Nuh, 9 dead

A tourist bus caught fire in Haryana's Nuh at around 1.30 am on Friday. At least nine people were killed and nearly 25 people sustained injuries in the incident.

Six men and three women were among those who died.  

Over 60 people, most of whom were on their way to some pilgrimage, were on board the bus when it caught fire. The cause behind the fire is not yet known.
