Leghorn - Livorno - Venice Quarter

Welcome to Livorno cruise port guide! (Post updated: March 2024)

Nestled on the northwest coast of Italy, the city of Livorno is the main gateway to Tuscany and its iconic cities of Pisa and Florence. It is one of the major cruise ports in Italy together with Civitavecchia (Rome), Naples, Venice, and La Spezia , often included in the Mediterranean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

Livorno Cruise Port

The cruise port of Livorno is one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean and the third-largest port in Italy. Livorno cruise ship terminal consists of two main parts: Porto Industriale (or Porto Nuovo – New Port) in its northern part, and Porto Mediceo (part of Porto Vecchio – Old Port) in the south, closer to the Livorno downtown.

Livorno cruise port map

1. Porto Industriale – Industrial Port

The majority of cruise lines dock at Porto Industriale , the large container and cargo cruise terminal located in the northern part of the harbour. It consists of 3 main berths that can accommodate 3 large cruise vessels at a time. It is also possible to dock at several other piers, so in total the port can accommodate up to 8 ships simultaneously.

The new Livorno cruise terminal, Alto Fondale (located at Calata Punto Franco) is mainly used by ferries and cruise ships doing turnarounds in Livorno.

The industrial port handles heavy traffic and is usually very noisy, as that is also a ferry terminal offering ferry transportation between Sardinia and Corsica and the mainland. Guests are not allowed to walk around the port, so a complimentary shuttle service to the main port entrance is provided.

The shuttle bus will drop you off at the terminal building by the port entrance where cruise passengers can find an ATM, a tourist information office, car rentals, taxis, tour operators, and free Wi-Fi internet.

In front of the ship, guests can find only taxis and a tourist information kiosk. Here you can take a 5€ shuttle bus to the city center (the drop-off point is Piazza Grande, the main square). Tickets for this shuttle can be purchased in cash right before boarding the bus, and the ride takes less than 10 minutes.

If you are taking a cruise line-organized shore excursion, your tour buses are parked outside the terminal building. However, if you have booked a trip with an Independent tour operator, your transport will be waiting for you at the port entrance near the terminal building and you must take the free shuttle to get there.

2. Porto Mediceo

Porto Mediceo (a historic Medici port) is located in the southern part of the Livorno harbour and is dedicated to smaller cruise ships/yachts. It has 2 berths, located within 10-15 minutes walking from the city center. In the cruise terminal, you will find a tourist information kiosk, taxis and car rental service.

Getting Around Livorno Port

  • The official currency in Italy is EURO (€). Major credit cards are widely accepted. Small businesses though will only take cash.
  • The easiest way to get to Livorno city center is by a 5€ shuttle bus that picks you up at the terminal building and drops you off at Piazza Grande. From there, you can explore the city of Livorno on foot.
  • If you plan to get to the train station ( Livorno Centrale ) you can take the shuttle to the city center and then take bus #1 in front of the Duomo (Cathedral) to the Livorno Centrale train station. You can buy the bus ticket at Tabacchi – Tobacco shops , and you will find several of these at the place where the shuttle bus drops you off (in Via Claudio Cogorano and Via Grande streets). You can also purchase the tickets at the newsstands. You will find the bus stations on Via Grande, the street in front of the Cathedral and Piazza Grande Square.
  • The bus ride from Piazza Grande to Livorno Centrale takes only 5 minutes. Once you arrive at the Livorno train station, you can take trains to Pisa, Florence, Lucca, and other places. If you are not in a hurry, you can also walk to the station and the journey takes around 30 minutes.
  • If you are planning to use the train services during your visit, make sure to check the train schedules and always have a backup plan, as you never know when trains can go on strike. You can check the timetables and fares on Trenitalia.com

  • Public bus – Livorno has a reliable bus network and is well-connected to other places in Tuscany. The two main bus routes in Livorno are LAM BLU (LB) Bus Route (or Bus #1), and LAM ROSSA (LR) Bus Route (or Bus #2). You can use both to get to the Livorno Centrale train station. If you are docked at Porto Mediceo, there is a bus stop within walking distance from the port and you can catch the LAM BLU bus to go to the city center.
  • Livorno Hop on Hop off bus tours are available every hour and they depart from the shuttle bus stop at the cruise terminal. The whole circuit takes 60 minutes and the audio guides in multiple languages are available.

If you decide to stay closer to the ship, do not miss the opportunity to visit the city of Livorno because it has a lot to offer! Once the shuttle bus drops you off at Piazza Grande, you can explore the majority of Livorno city attractions on foot.

The entrance to the city from the port already speaks well of its history, because one of the first things you will come across is Fortezza Vecchia , an imposing medieval fortress with three defensive bastions that were built in the 16th century.

Further on, the Cathedral of San Francisco (Cattedrale di San Francesco), also known as Duomo, dominates Piazza Grande and Via Grande, the main street that connects the old port (Porto Mediceo) to Piazza della Repubblica .

The Cathedral was constructed in the early 17th century and represents a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture, boasting valuable artworks and a beautiful interior. It had a turbulent history as it was completely demolished during World War II bombings, only to be restored in the 1950s.

Duomo Cathedral - Livorno port

There are also a few other Livorno highlights not to be missed:

  • Jewish Synagogue – located only 2oo m from the Duomo, the new synagogue was built in the 1960s to replace the original one that was destroyed in World War II.
  • Venice Quarter (Quartieri Venezia) – Less than a 10-minute walk north of the Cathedral, close to the Livorno cruise port, you will come across this historic quarter that kept its original look as it wasn’t destroyed in the WWII bombings. Often referred to as the Venezia Nuova district, with its channels, bridges, colorful facades and ancient buildings, this part of Livorno will throw you back to Venice. In the vicinity, you will find the Church of St Catherine (Chiesa di Santa Caterina) and Fortezza Nuova – an imposing ancient fort dating from the early 17th century.
  • Central Market (Mercato Centrale) – Known as Mercato delle Vettovaglie, this market is one of the favorite local spots and a famous landmark of Livorno. Housed in an ornate 19th-century building, this is the best place to shop for fresh products and feel the authentic Italian spirit. Ground coffee, fresh pastries, cheeses, meats, seafood, bread, wines, oils, fruits, and vegetables… over 200 stalls and shops await you for a unique local experience!
  • Civic Museum “Giovanni Fattori” (Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori) – Approximately a 30-minute walk (or 10 minutes drive) south of Livorno city center and Porto Mediceo, and a 15-minute drive south of Porto Industriale, art lovers can visit this exceptional art museum dedicated to Giovanni Fattori, a 19th-century artist born in Livorno and a leader of ‘Macchiaioli’ artistic movement. In the gallery, you can visit the remarkable collections of his paintings, as well as the artworks of other Macchiaioli painters.
  • The Four Moors (Monumento dei Quattro Mori) – Dominating Piazza Giuseppe Micheli and Piazza del Pamiglione, this extraordinary monument overlooks Porto Mediceo dock and sits at the beginning of Via Grande. The marble and bronze monument was erected in the early 17th century and commemorates Medici Grand Duke Ferdinando I’s victories over the Ottomans.
  • Mascagni’s Promenade (Terrazza Mascagni) – A 30-minute walk south of Porto Mediceo and the city center, this immense chessboard promenade square offers outstanding views of the harbor and the sea. Thanks to its legendary Leaning Tower, Pisa is one of the most famous cities in Italy known all over the world. Located in the Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the spectacular Leaning Tower is surrounded by the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa), the cemetery (Camposanto) and the Baptistery – considered the most beautiful example of Romanesque architecture.

Besides its extraordinary landmarks, The Field of Miracles is packed with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Field of Miracles - The Baptistery, Pisa Cathedral and The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The tower was originally built as a bell tower for the Cathedral but never fulfilled its purpose due to its faulty design and loose soil beneath it. Undoubtedly, climbing the most famous Tower in Italy is among the main experiences of your trip to Italy, but please consider that you will need to climb 300 spiral steps to the top.

It is strongly recommended to purchase tickets at specific times selected in advance to ensure your place in line. For security reasons and conservation of the Tower of Pisa, visitors can climb in groups of 40 people with shifts of 35/40 minutes. Kids under 8 cannot climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa due to safety reasons.

It takes 5-10 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace, so you can admire Pisa and the Field of Miracles for about 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, there is no elevator inside the tower to accommodate wheelchair users, however, you can admire the beauty of the tower from the outside and take the iconic picture holding the tower. Check out more information on the Tower of Pisa official webpage

How to Get to Pisa from Livorno Port?

  • Train – You can catch the train from Livorno Centrale train station to Pisa Centrale; the train runs every 10-15 minutes, and the journey to Pisa takes 15 minutes. The train station in Pisa (Pisa Centrale) is approximately a 20-minute walk from the Field of Miracles.
  • Public bus – The buses to Pisa depart from Piazza della Repubblica, the square located a 5-minute walk from Piazza Grande in Livorno. You will need bus #10 which runs every 30 minutes, and the ride to Pisa lasts approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive in Pisa, the bus will drop you off at the bus stop near the railway station, so you can either walk to the Field of Miracles or take a local bus to get there.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer – A taxi ride to Pisa from the cruise port in Livorno takes around 30 minutes (the distance is 25 km/15.5 miles. Taxis in Italy are quite expensive (make sure you inquire about official prices at the tourist information desk) so a better deal is to book a private transfer .
  • Shore Excursion – Cruise lines offer different tour options to Pisa – some of them include the entrance fee to the Tower, others a guided tour and free time at the site, or just the transfers. You can either book with your cruise line or explore Independent tour operator offers.

3. Florence

Known as the cradle of the Renaissance thanks to its remarkable architecture, and historical and cultural heritage, Tuscany’s capital is a must-see place if you are visiting Tuscany for the first time.

Although you need at least a couple of days in Florence to properly visit the city, the best way to explore Florence is to take a guided walking tour along with a knowledgeable guide, who will share the local stories and take you to the most interesting corners and hidden gems of the city.

If you decide to come on your own, keep in mind that for most of the museums and landmarks you need to purchase the skip-the-line entrance tickets  in advance.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore - Florence

Here are some of the must-see places in Florence:

  • If you are an art lover, you should visit Uffizi Gallery , and Galleria dell’Accademia (which houses the original Michelangelo’s  David ) considered some of the most renowned museums in Florence. Be prepared for the long lines, especially during the summer months. Some other museums and art galleries to consider are Palazzo Vecchio , Palazzo Pitti , Palazzo Strozzi , Casa di Dante Museum , Casa Buonarroti (Michelangelo’s Museum) among others.
  • At the beautiful Piazza della Signoria Square dominated by the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, you can see a replica of Michelangelo’s David, and the statues of the great artists of Florence.
  • The 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) located in Piazza del Duomo is the most striking structure in Florence with its red-tiled Dome – the symbol of Florence. The Cathedral is majestic and in addition to enjoying its external beauties, it is worth visiting the Cathedral’s interior and climbing to the Dome to enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the city.
  • Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is a remarkable 15th-century basilica and the city’s main Dominican church featuring famous frescoes by Gothic and Renaissance masters.
  • The famous Baroque Porcellino fountain (Fontana del Porcellino – the bronze fountain of a boar) is located in the 16th century Market Square (Mercato del Porcellino) and is a mandatory stop for those who want to return to Florence. Tradition says that if you touch the boar’s snout you will surely return.
  • No visit to Florence is complete without a stop at Ponte Vecchio (old bridge). Take your time to admire it from a distance or walk through and visit one of the shops – the jewelry on the bridge is not cheap, but looking at the jewelry does not cost anything!

Ponte Vecchio - Florence

How to Get to Florence from the Port of Livorno?

  • Shore Excursion – Florence is located 90 km/56 miles from the port of Livorno, approximately a 1-hour 30-minute drive. Due to the distance and the limited time in port, I strongly suggest you take an organized shore excursion, either from the cruise line or a reliable tour operator.
  • Train – You can take the train from Livorno Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella station. The train runs 2 or 3 times per hour, and the journey takes 1h 20 minutes (up to 1h 40 minutes). Once you get off the train, you’ll be in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, and in less than a 10-minute walk you can reach The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer

If you are already familiar with Pisa and Florence then head over to Lucca, one of the few Italian cities that has kept all the medieval splendor of its historic center intact. Known as the city of 100 towers and 100 churches, it contains historical and artistic sites that deserve to be visited.

The city is famous for being surrounded by a wall built between the 16th and 17th centuries that has remained intact, and it is the birthplace of two of the greatest Italian musicians, Luigi Boccherini and Giacomo Puccini. Stroll through the beautiful elliptical-shaped square, Piazza Anfiteatro , built on top of an ancient amphitheater from the 2nd century AD. See the monumental church of San Michele in Foro with its 13th-century façade decorated with intricate details and its huge statue of the Archangel Michael at the top.

San Michele in Foro - Lucca

The Guinigi Palace (Palazzo Guinigi) and Guinigi Tower (Torre Guinigi) are must-see attractions, especially if you look for spectacular panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. You can climb 230 steps of this 14th-century brick tower and admire some great views of Lucca from the picturesque garden at the top.

Torre delle Ore (Torre dell’ Orologio) located only a few minutes walk from Guinigi Tower, is the medieval clock tower and the tallest tower in the city from the top of which you can see the entire city of Lucca. The most interesting thing about this tower is the manual clock mechanism, which can be observed in detail while climbing. Throughout the old town, you will find signs that indicate a tour of the city; I advise you to follow them as they will allow you to find the monuments easily.

How to Get to Lucca from Livorno Cruise Port?

  • Train – The distance between Lucca and the port of Livorno is approximately 50 km/30 miles (a 55-minute drive). The most convenient and affordable option is to take the train from Livorno Centrale to Pisa Centrale and then change train to Lucca. The train runs twice per hour, and the whole one-way trip takes around 1 hour.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer – A taxi ride takes around 45 minutes.
  • Shore Excursion – Cruise lines and independent tour operators offer shore excursions to Lucca.

5. Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre (“five towns”) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park that consists of five fishing villages perched high up on the cliffs of the Italian Riviera approximately 110 km/68 miles north of Livorno. The beauty of the colorful medieval villages can best be admired by boat, which allows visitors to take in the breathtaking views of the villages and the dramatic coast of northwest Italy.

Cinque Terre - Riomaggiore village

The villages of Riomaggiore , Manarola , Vernazza , Corniglia , and Monterosso al Mare boast rich history and traditions as they date from the Middle Ages, and they are interconnected by trails so you can explore them on foot, or by hiking. There is also a train that runs every few minutes between the villages, which allows travelers to easily move from one village to another.

Another wonderful place to visit is Portovenere , a medieval coastal village located south of Cinque Terre. Although it isn’t officially part of Cinque Terre, the village is equally beautiful and often included in the same itinerary and Cinque Terre shore excursions. I wrote about Cinque Terre in detail in my article: Day Trip to Cinque Terre and Portovenere from La Spezia Port

Portovenere harbour

How to Get to Cinque Terre from Livorno Port?

  • It takes at least a 1-hour 30-minute drive one way to reach the first village of Riomaggiore from Livorno cruise port and due to the distance, not all the cruise lines offer shore excursions to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is more easily explored from the port of La Spezia , but in case you decide to visit it from Livorno, the best way would be to either book a shore excursion or a round-trip private transfer .
  • The train is not a convenient option as it would take you at least 2 hours one way to get to the villages, including changing one or two trains (at Pisa Centrale and La Spezia Centrale). You would need to carefully plan your day according to the train timetables and the ship’s scheduled time in port.

6. San Gimignano

Nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside and the Chianti wine region in the province of Siena, San Gimignano is another hidden gem of Tuscany boasting stunning medieval architecture. The distance between San Gimignano and Livorno port is 83 km/52 miles and it takes a 1h 30 minutes drive to get there.

San Gimignano is a small walled hilltop town also known as the Town of Fine Towers due to a dozen of preserved tower houses. The town boasts beautiful Gothic and Romanesque architecture, churches, medieval fortifications, great local cuisine, and delicious wines.

San Gimignano panorama

The main San Gimignano highlights are the Colegiata (Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta); the Church of Sant’ Agostino;  the Communal Palace (Palazzo Communale, the Town Hall) located on Piazza del Duomo and home to the town gallery; Palazzo Vecchio del Podestà;  the Cistern Square (Piazza della Cisterna, the main town square); Torre Grossa (54m, the tallest tower); Salvucci Tower (Torri dei Salvucci); and a few others.

How to Get to San Gimignano from Livorno Cruise Port?

  • It takes around a 1-hour 30-minute drive one way to reach San Gimignano. Some cruise lines offer shore excursions, however, most of them include stops at other places in Tuscany (Siena) which means that you won’t have much time to spend in San Gimignano.
  • You can either book a shore excursion or private round trip transfer , or you can rent a car, which is a great option as there are a couple of car parks outside the walls of San Gimignano where you can leave your car for a fee.
  • You can also take a train from Livorno Centrale to Poggibonsi-S.Gimignano (with 1 change at Empoli). The ride takes around 1 hour 40 minutes.

With its historic center protected by UNESCO, medieval architecture, a great number of museums, galleries, and a long history of banking/commercial activities, Siena is the capital city of the province of Siena located 130 km/81 miles (a 2-hour drive) southeast of Livorno port.

It is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and if you decide to spend your day in Siena, you should see the city highlights including the imposing Campo Square (Piazza del Campo, the main square), the Tower of Mangia (Torre del Mangia), the 12th-century Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) overlooking Piazza del Duomo, Santa Maria in Provenzano Church , the 14th-century Gothic Palazzo Salimbeni dominating a large Piazza Salimbeni , Siena Synagogue …

  • You can also take the train from Livorno Centrale to Siena; the train runs once per hour, and you will need to change the train in Empoli. The ride takes at least 2 hours.

8. Volterra

Located around a 1-hour drive from Livorno cruise port (72 km/45 miles), the mountaintop town of Volterra is known for its rich history and the ruins dating from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods.

While there, don’t miss out on visiting some of the main Volterra highlights: the Roman Theater of Volterra (Teatro Romano di Volterra) dating from the 1st century BC; Piazza dei Priori (the main square) dominated by Palazzo dei Priori , the 13th-century Town Hall building; Volterra Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) with its marble entrance and a gilded coffered ceiling; the Etruscan Museum “Mario Guarnacci” , and the remains of the Etruscan Acropolis (Acropoli Etrusca) among others.

Volterra - Italy

How to Get to Volterra from Livorno Port?

  • Some cruise lines offer shore excursions that include a stop in Volterra, however, if you want to go on your own, the best option would be to either rent a car or book a private transfer . The ride takes approximately 1h 10 minutes each way.
  • You can also take the train from Livorno Centrale to Volterra-Saline-Pomarance train station (including 1 change in Cecina). The ride takes up to 1 hour 30 minutes. Once you get off at the Volterra-Saline-Pomarance, you will need to catch a local bus #780 and ride for another 25 minutes.
  • If you decide to go by train, you need to carefully plan your day because there are only a few trains running per day, and the local buses are not frequent. I suggest you book a shore excursion, either with your cruise line or a reliable tour operator, as you will avoid all the hassle with the local transportation.

Arriving in Florence by cruise via Livorno

How to get to florence from the livorno (leghorn) cruise terminal.

Livorno is Leghorn FYI: For reasons still unclear, some cruise lines and other travel literature continue to refer to Livorno by its antiquated, Anglicized name left over from World War II: Leghorn. The closest cruise ship port to Florence is Livorno—not that Livorno is actually anywhere near Florence . Livorno is a 90-minute car ride, or 80–100-minute train ride, from Florence .

Livorno is a Renaissance-era port city on the Tuscan coast near Pisa . (In point of fact, the ruling Medici family of Florence built Livorno specifically to compete against the rival city of Pisa .)

You have three options for getting from Livorno to Florence (beyond the ship's own offered connections/excursions). In brief:

  • Public transport : €10–€40 per person. » more
  • Private car/taxi (transfer only) : €40–€170 per person. » more
  • Shore excursion (with guided sightseeing) : €87–€350 per person. » more

How to get from Livorno to Florence by private car (€40–€170 per person)

First of all, do not take a taxi. It'll cost around €170 ($225) per person each way. Insane.

A private car from the cuise port in Livorno to Florence will take about 90 minutes.

You can get a private transfer with our partners at Viator.com for a discounted rate starting around $55 per person one-way or $94 round-trip—though that rate depends on how many are in your party. (The more of your fellow passengers you can get into the car or minivan, the less each person will pay. For just two people, the per-person one-way rate is more like $177, round-trip around $300.)

There are actaully two services: One is cheaper for one-way transfers (arriving or departing), the other is cheaper for round-trip service (for when you just have a single day in port):

  • Round-trip: Livorno Cruise Port to Florence Private Transfer
  • Arrival Transfer: Livorno Cruise Port to Central Florence
  • Departure Transfer: Central Florence to Livorno Cruise Port

How to get from Livorno to Florence by guided shore excursion (€87–€350 per person)

You can also take a guided tour of Florence from the cruise ship with our partners Context Travel or Select Italy:

  • Context: Full Day Tour from Cruise Ship Florence
  • Florence Shore Excursion: Livorno Port-of-Call
  • Livorno Shore Excursion: Florence and Pisa in One Day Sightseeing Tour
  • Livorno Shore Excursion: Pisa and Florence Private Day Trip
  • Florence & Pisa Shore Excursion: Livorno Port-of-Call

Or Viator.com (more on the latter below):

How to get from Livorno to Florence by train (€10–€40 per person)

A train is the cheapest option, though not the fastest (all told, if you hit the connections just right, it'll take a minimum 100 minutes, more like 120–140 minutes).

There are one to three trains per hour making the 68– to 100-minute train ride from Livorno to Florence . A one-way, second class ticket costs €9.10.

First, however, you have to get from the ship to the stazione treni (train station) Livorno Centrale, which is not really walkable from any of the cruise terminals at the port.

Getting from the docks to the Livorno train station

A taxi from the Livorno docks direct to the train station will cost you about €20–€30, so get a few people together and the ease and time you save will make it worth it. The ride will take all of 10 minutes.

Many cruise lines offer a cheap or free shuttle to Piazza Grande in the center of Livorno (takes about 10 minutes). Don't bother. This is not near the train station.

If you dock at Molo Mediceo, just walk out of the port, buy a biglietto autobus (public bus ticket) for €1.20 from any newsstand you pass, and head straight up Via Grande to the first bus stop on your right. Hop city bus #1 to the stazione treni in about 15 minutes.

If you dock at the Darsena Toscana, or anywhere else in the hinterlands of the port complex, public transport become more difficult. Just grab a taxi, or if it's offered that free/cheap shuttle to Piazza Grande.

(If you do take your shuttle to Piazza Grande, you can still grab public bus #1 from there; there are newsstands on the piazza where you can buy bus tickets. This adds another 5–10 minutes.)

Cruise port to train station in Livorno

Cool Cruiser

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I looked at a lot of info on this forum as well as online and Rick Steve’s guide and now got confused, so if anyone has done this journey please advice.

we are family of four, with us being in late 40s and teenage kids. Visiting Livorno in July & want to go to Pisa, climb the tower and then if time permits take train to Lucca and back to ship. Ship is in dock 9:30 am-8:30 pm so we are looking for relatively faster but yet affordable options.

in Rick Steves guide I read we will need to take port shuttle to Livorno town center (Piazza del Municipio) for 5 euro/pp, but then somewhere online I read it’s free shuttle…which is true??? & from town center need to take LAMBLU bus to Livorno train to station (Livorno Centrale) which is about 2 euro/pp before getting onto regional train to Pisa Centrale

I also read there are taxis from port to Livorno train station which are 25 Euros. Are these directly from port to train station? Or from Livorno town center to train station??

thanks so much.

You can certainly try to get a taxi at the port to take you to the train station and that will likely cost about 20-25Euros.  The problem is that many taxis at the port are looking for a full day fare to places like Florence.  So we always suggest that you be among the first off the ship, head directly to the taxi queue, and start asking for a taxi to go to the "stazione."  There are usually a few drivers that will do those short hauls, and if not, some of the others are often helpful in calling for other taxis.

Upon your return to Livorno the problem is somewhat different.  The taxis at the station will generally have no problem taking fares to the port but there are often a shortage of taxis.  So the best strategy is to be among the first off the train and than quickly walk to the main station entrance/exit and outside to the taxi waiting area.  It is truly first come first serve.   The best protection is to always take a train that will get you back to Livorno at least an hour before you must be back to the port.  Those of us who routinely "do our own thing" have learned that there are times to be cautious with one's time...and this is one of those situations.

It looks like you are on NCL. NCL in past seasons has been the ONLY line to offer a shuttle that drops off directly at the train station. It isn't free but not sure what the cost is.  It may not be a savings over taking a taxi, with four people -- however, as Hank points out, getting a taxi isn't always a slam dunk.

The real benefit to you is the return to the ship. With a shuttle calling regularly at the train station, you have a fairly guaranteed way back to your ship. You don't need to depend on the taxis. (Although, as Hank said, when I've gotten off the train promptly and headed out to the street I've always been able to get one...)

Ask around on the NCL forum or read trip reports from NCL ships calling in Livorno. I'm guessing NCL probably does not advertise the shuttle in advance (they want to sell you expensive excursions), but it has been reported to run for the last several years (pre-COVID).

I'd try to avoid going to the center of town and doing the transfer to the bus and then the train station. It just takes that much more time out of an already short day.

Another option is renting a car. We rented one from a company that had them waiting right at the pier.

IF you arrive back at the Livorno train station and there are not taxis (or a ship shuttle), there should be a bus alternative that partially helps.  When we arrived back at the station, we waited for about 15 minutes with no taxis and we could not get anyone to call one for us inside the station.  They were busy.  So I saw a city bus waiting outside the station and found that it would take us to Piazza Grande, which is a central city transportation hub of sorts.  I figured that was half way to the ship, so better than waiting at the station.  Upon arrival at P. Grande, I found that this was where the ship shuttles dropped people off who had arranged for transport into town.  We were able to hop on one of those back to our ship.  Even if that had not been the case, there were more taxis here and we could have hopped in one of those to the port.  Of course, we had to pay for the bus from the station to P. Grande, but it was of minimal cost.

Ultimate guide to the port of Livorno for cruises in 2023: where ships dock, top things to do, on shore excursions and on your own, how to get around, shopping, and restaurants

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: June 1, 2023

Florence and Pisa are two top destinations close to Livorno and the main reason why ships call at Livorno port when on a cruise in the Mediterranean.

In fact, many cruise lines list the port as Florence/Pisa (Livorno) and the overwhelming majority of cruise passengers will explore these jewels of Tuscany when docking for the day.

Besides these world-renowned cities, you may also explore other treasures of Tuscany such as Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra, or Cinque Terre. All these cities are 30 to 90 minutes away by bus, car, or train.

Because Florence (the main highlight and attraction close by) is 56 miles (90 km) from the Livorno port, taking slightly over 1 hour to get there on a shore excursion, cruise ships usually stay in port as long as 12 hours. This allows cruise passengers to explore most of the highlights nearby at leisure and even some attractions on your own.

For those that prefer to stay in port, there is plenty of time to explore almost all the attractions in the city of Livorno. Although some savvy cruisers that have been in Livorno endless times may prefer to stay onboard when calling at the Livorno port, a walk around the old city can be a delight not to be missed.

Where is Livorno and the cruise port

Livorno is the third-largest port in Italy and the cruise gateway to Tuscany. The port city is on the northwest coast of Italy, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is part of the Mediterranean. Livorno port is, together with Venice and Civitavecchia (Rome), one of the most visited ports on cruises in Italy.

Livorno is a port of call, meaning that ships visit the port for the day. Very seldom cruise ships stay overnight in port. On average, 700.000 cruise passengers visit Livorno port every year.

How far is Livorno port from top destinations

Pisa and Lucca are the closest highlights and very easy to explore on your own. Florence is the most famous destination highlight for cruise passengers and is easy to get to by train.

Siena and San Gimignano are a bit farther away but not to be missed and better to explore with shore excursions. Volterra is not far but not easy to explore on your own unless you rent a car. To explore Livorno's destinations visit our page with all reviews and port guides.

Travel time from Livorno to Tuscany's destinations

Where cruise ships dock and cruise terminals.

Livorno port is vast, with 2 different docking areas, and numerous quays that can accommodate up to 11 ships. The Porto Industriale is the largest area ( A on the map below ) with 3 piers and cruise terminals. Cruise passengers are not allowed to walk in port but there is a shuttle bus at the pier and also taxis. All cruise terminals in the Porto Industriale have the following services and amenities:

  • Tourist Information
  • Tour Services
  • Sightseeing

The Porto Mediceo is mainly used by small and luxury cruise lines. It has two distinct docking spots. One is within walking distance of the city center ( B on the map below ). If your ship is docked in the farthest berths ( C on the map below ) there will be a shuttle bus as well. You will only find a few services and amenities at Porto Mediceo.

Unless you are cruising on a small luxury cruise ship, which may dock within walking distance of the city center, the port authorities will provide a shuttle bus. On most cruise lines this is a complimentary service but you may be charged €5 by some cruise lines.

For over a decade the shuttle bus drop-off is on Piazza del Municipio where you will find close by most services and amenities, including a taxi stand, Tourist Info, sightseeing, public buses, ATM, currency exchange.

Keeping in touch

Besides exploring the sites and attractions of Livorno, cruise passengers may use the time in port to get in touch with family and friends. The post office is in the city center, there are quite a few free wi-fi spots, public phones are available but you really need to find out how to use them, and there are a few places that handle DHL and UPS. Livorno Shops and Shopping Streets

Livorno doesn't have extravagant designer shops, but you will find typically affordable brands ranging from Zara to United Colors of Benetton. And also, small boutiques that display labels like Trussardi or Stefanell. Be aware that many shops close between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, most are closed on Sundays and that some shops are also closed on Monday mornings.

There are two main shopping streets in Livorno: Via Grande and Via Cairoli (the latter on the more upscale end). If looking for basic or emergency stuff (like pharmacies , toiletries or baby-children needs) it is on Via Grande that you will find most of what you may need.

On this main street, the cruise passenger will also find a few coffee shops and the best ice cream (gelato) in town. Close to the Porto Mediceo at the West end of Via Grande, an Enoteca (Wine Bar) is the place to go if looking for a quick bite or a light lunch . For a selection of the best shops: click here to explore Livorno shopping .

Livorno's flavors and restaurants

Only a few cruise passengers choose to stay onboard when visiting Livorno port and most eat lunch in one of the many venues cruise ships offer. But if you enjoy tasting local flavors, Livorno is an exceptional port to savor genuine Italian cuisine.

The "Cacciucco" (a soup made of various sea creatures, wine, tomato, hot peppers, and garlic) is undoubtedly the most famous local recipe served at the Editor's favorite restaurants . But there are many other culinary delighst to excite your taste buds.

Livorno has a good number of unpretentious restaurants with very nice home-cooked food, where locals have lunch . If you prefer a more upscale decor and service there are excellent traditional restaurants .

For those preferring a light meal or a quick bite , there are many coffee shops and a few commendable Enotecas (wine bars serving light snacks and wines by the glass. Cruise passengers exploring off the beaten track attractions should look into lesser-known, or off the beaten track but excellent restaurants.

To see and do beyond Livorno's city center

Cruise passengers not wishing to spend a full day exploring the highlights of Livorno port will find a few alternatives in the southern outskirts of Livorno.

The small towns of Antignano and Ardenza (and the Sanctuary of Montenero close by) are just between 3 and 5 miles away. Farther south (30 miles), the “Etruscan Coast” offers interesting Eco-adventures alternatives to the more traditional, cultural and historical aspect of Tuscany.

Livorno's activities and beaches

For those cruising with children or not in the mood for historical excursions, there are great beaches and watersports, including scuba and windsurfing , close by. South of the city center, not that far from the port shuttle stop at Piazza Municipio, there are a few nice “ Bagni ” (Bathing Establishments) or serviced beach clubs not to be ignored.

Just 3 miles north of the city's center, Tirrenia is a 20-mile long strip of sandy beaches ending in Marina the Pisa. This is the place to go if sunbathing and sea splashing are in your plans for a day in Livorno. On this strip, there are dozens of beach clubs to choose from.

Livorno's outdoors

Besides a few nice gardens surrounding a couple of churches, you will have to walk quite a while to enjoy the few parks that Livorno has to offer. Undoubtedly, the most famous outdoor setting in Livorno is Terrazza Mascagni or Mascagni's Promenade , which was named after the famous opera composer born in the city.

Off the Beaten Track

The Mercatino Americano is often highlighted in many a travel guide but it is now a shadow of its former appeal since it changed to an off the beaten track location. What used to be a 'street market' on Piazza XX Septembre become a series of stands in storehouses next to the entrance of the Porto Industriale.

Seldom mentioned onboard cruise ships - and never offered on tours - destinations such as Montecatini , Pistoia , Prato and Vinci (the birth town of Leonardo da Vinci) are close enough to be explored whilst calling at Livorno for a day. These and many other small jewels in Tuscany are alternative destinations for those that have visited Livorno and its most famous highlights.

When and how to cruise to Livorno

The Editor has visited Livorno in all seasons for over 20 years and has found that there are always charming aspects to enjoy in the city and in Tuscany almost all year round. However, different cruise lines call at Livorno port in different seasons, and the weather varies a lot. Florence Italy

Florence is certainly one of the most beautiful and interesting cities to visit in all of Europe.  Unfortunately, it is located approximately 75 miles from Livorno and the Livorno Central Train Station is situated far from the cruise port.

Although it might be feasible to purchase a ship-sponsored tour directly from your cruise ship, it will certainly cost a lot of money.  You'll also have very little time in Florence after the long drive.

Consequently, we recommend that you not do a day-excursion to Florence from Livorno.  Instead we recommend that you visit Florence either before or after your cruise and spend at least two full days in the city.  You won't regret it!

The city of Pisa is certainly well within striking distance of the Port of Livorno.  Top attractions include its famous leaning tower, the Pisa Cathedral, and Field of Miracles.

You can reach Pisa by train from the Livorno Central Train Station.

Lucca Italy

Lucca is another beautiful community in Tuscany and well worth visiting.  It is located a little further from Livorno than Pisa, but much closer than Florence.

You can reach Lucca by train from the Livorno Central Train Station.

I know this is a repeated question, but I can;t find an answer post-2014 so I wanted to make sure my information is accurate.

I've seen conflicting reports about where to get the bus from, which bus to get, and where I can even get a ticket from.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

' class=

If they don't, the shuttles used to drop off near the tourist information office at Piazza del Municipio, you can get a ticket there for the bus that runs up Via Grande to the station.

You can also buy a bus ticket and go directly from Piazza del Municipio in Livorno to Pisa.

Of course, this is all pre-Covid information, we'll all have to wait and see what happens when cruises start up again.

We have been to Livorno twice, and each time there was a shuttle bus laid on to get us into the town because the public were not allowed to walk through the port area.

On our first visit we walked to he railway station thinking we'd have a look around on the way. It was a long way, though, and there didn't seem to be much that was attractive or interesting en route.

Taxis a few years ago charged 25 euro for the short trip to the station but you could cram six people in for that fare, so that may be an option. Not all of the drivers were willing to take the short trip, however.

If you take the cruise shuttle to Piazza del Municipio it's still another 2.5k (1.6 miles) on foot from there to the train station and, as noted above, it's not a particularly interesting walk.

Livorno (aka Leghorn) is a port city on the Ligurian Sea, located on the western coast of Italy's Tuscany region. The city has population around 160,000. Port Livorno (locode ITLIV) is Tuscany's principal port as well as the cruise port to four provincial capital cities - Pisa (approx 25 km / 16 mi away), Lucca (~50 km / 30 mi), Firenze/Florence (Tuscany's capital, ~105 km / 65 mi to the east), and Siena (~130 km / 80 mi).

Livorno is the principal cruise port to Florence/Pisa. However, as an alternative port to these popular tourist cities is sometimes used Carrara , from where Florence and Pisa are also accessed via shore excursions/bus tours.

Port Livorno

Livorno is one of the biggest seaports in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. It serves various types of ships, including cargo carriers, container ships , passenger ships ( ferries and cruise liners). Several heavy-traffic regularly scheduled ferry services are provided by the companies Corsica-Sardinia Ferries (to Golfo Aranci Sardinia  and  Bastia Corsica ), Grimaldi Lines (to Barcelona Spain and Tangier Morocco ), Toremar (to Capraia Island), Moby Lines (to Corsica Island's ports Bastia and Olbia ).

In the end of 2013 was approved a plan for expanding Livorno's passenger port (that serves the ferry and cruise shipping traffic). The project included both piers (Alto Fondale, Calata Orlando), providing 3 more dedicated cruise berths (for vessels with LOA length 300+ m / 984+ ft) and infrastructure development (relocating commercial berths to separate cargo and passenger traffic). The first phase of the port expansion project was completed in 2017. All works are expected to be completed in 2022-23. Until the project's completion, commercial piers will still be used for cruise ship docking.

In November 2015, the Port introduced its shoreside-power supply system (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) providing up to 12 MW electrical power for berthed vessels. The system can support mid-sized cruise liners (with passenger capacity 1000-2000) which usually dock at Sgarallino Pier. The project cost EUR 3,5 million, and was 80% funded by Port Livorno. By 2018, the company Enel (Italy's manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas) increased the Port's shore-power capacity up to 45 MW, allowing cold ironing services to ships berthed at other piers, as well as capacity to supply larger vessels.

Port's statistical data for season 2016 showed a total of 404 cruise ship calls and 810,000 passengers - about 16% increase over 2015. Season 2017's data showed a 10% decrease (over 2016) in ship visits.

In 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 349 ship calls and handled around 700,000 passengers. Season 2017 featured 6 new cruise vessels (making maiden calls) and 3 ships doing partial turnaround (optional embarkation / disembarkation in Port Livorno):  AIDAperla  (17 calls),  Silver Muse  (5),  Seabourn Encore  (5),  Majestic Princess  (4),  Viking Sky  (2),  Norwegian Joy  (1 call),  MSC Armonia  (17 partial turnarounds),  Arethusa  (16 partial turnarounds),  Hebridean Sky  (1 partial turnaround).

In 2018, the port had scheduled 362 cruise ship calls with around 730,000 passengers. Also in 2018 was completed cruise port's privatization (started in 2017), with MSC Cruises being one of its owners.

There are plans for port developments (budgeted EUR 90 million) for building 4 new berths and terminals with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . These plans also include building new facilities providing shore-side power and LNG bunkering. Port's max draft is 15 m (49 ft) and its access channel is wide enough to accommodate big-sized liners.

Starting operations in January 2019, Port Livorno has Mediterranean's largest container  crane ("Model 8 Mobile Harbor Crane"). Built by Konecranes Gottwald lift AGV, the huge crane has max lifting capacity 200 tons, operational radius 12-16 m and hoising heights 12-54 m (below-above quay level). It can serve boxships and ConRo vessels (RoRo-boxship combo transporting TEUs, wheeled cargo and vehicles). The new crane is diesel-electric (power output 1 MW) and can be hooked-up to the terminal's power grid.

In March 2022, Port Livorno contracted for dredging and other works SIDRA (Societa Italiana Dragaggi, subsidiary of DEME Group). Besides dredging, the project includes the construction of Europa Dock, port expansion works (expanding the berthing line with ~3 km / 1,9 mi), coastal defense works (building two new breakwaters - North and South, plus relocating the Meloria breakwater/total breakwater length 6 km / 3,7 mi). Scheduled to start in 2023, works will deepen the Port's access channel (to 17 m / 56 ft), the internal basins draft (to 16 m / 53 ft), and also lay the new breakwaters' foundations. The contract's value is yet to be revealed but, reportedly, it's over EUR 150 million.

Livorno cruise terminal

Currently, the cruise port has 3 berths (close to Pisa International Airport) and can handle 3 large-sized ships at a time. Extra berthing is available at other piers, offering priority docking for passenger shipping vessels. In total, the port can handle 8 cruise ships simultaneously. Smaller-sized vessels berth within walking distance to downtown (Old Fortress).

Livorno's new Alto Fondale cruise terminal is located at Silos Granari Calata Punto Franco. The facility is used only by ships operating on roundtrip itinerariess from Livorno (turnarounds). It is located approx 0,5 km from the city center. Two big airports are located close to the cruise port terminal - Aeroporto di Pisa (13 km / 8 ml) and Aeroporto di Firenze (Florence, 80 km / 50 ml).

Large cruise ships to Livorno dock at port's container terminal. From there is provided shuttle bus service (terminal to Piazza Grande). Depending on cruise company, this service is at additional charge or complimentary. Taxis at the terminal are also available. The nearest railway station is approx 3 km (1,9 ml) or about 5-min bus drive. Bus shuttles stop at the train station too. At the terminal, cruise passsengers can purchase bus and train (roundtrip) tickets to Pisa, Florence and Lucca. Trains from Livorno to Pisa depart every 30 min.

In the end of 2013 was approved a 3-year plan for expanding the cruise port. It included the whole Alto Fondale and Calata Orlando piers, and provided 3 more cruise ship dedicated berths for larger vessels (with length over 300 m / 980 ft).

Port's future expansion involves a huge investment for redesigning of its infrastructure in order commercial berths to be relocated, so cargo and passenger shipping traffic to be separated. This project's first stage will be completed in 2017. By the year 2022 all should be completed, but the commercial piers will still be used by cruise ships in the meantime.

In the near future, Port Livorno will offer LNG bunkering at a new (dedicated) cruise terminal just 20 km (12 ml) away from the cruise port. The port autority company announced in July 2016 that they are considering the option to use the LNG plant to refuel LNG-powered cruise ships . This way Livorno will join the seaports offering LNG bunkering (liquefied natural gas). Close-to-port LNG supply service will allow vessels to bunker directly - without using LNG barges or trucks to provide them with fuel.

Livorno is also thye cruise port to Pisa and Florence. The long list of Livorno's places of interest and most popular tourist attractions includes:

  • Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi
  • Acquario comunale Diacinto Cestoni
  • Fortezza Nuova
  • Fortezza Vecchia
  • Fosso Reale
  • Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori
  • Museo di storia naturale del Mediterraneo
  • Orto Botanico del Mediterraneo
  • Old English Cemetery
  • Sanctuary of Montenero
  • Porto Mediceo
  • Venezia Nuova
  • Terrazza Mascagni

A popular shore excursion offered from Livorno cruise port is the bus tour of Bolgheri and the Wine Road, located at approx 40 min drive distance from the port. The famous Viale dei Cipressi leads cruise tourists to the village of Bolgheri. After visiting the craft shops and wine bars, tourists travel to the vineyards where they have the chance to taste local delicacies, such as Olive Oil, honey, bread and cheeses.

To promote the potential of the Livorno territory, as an alternative to the classic Tuscany tour, Porto 2000 presented at Seatrade Cruise Med (in  Tenerife, Canaries ) a new marketing project called "Why Livorno", which was launched at Seatrade Cruise Global (in  Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA ) in March 2017.

Where is Naples Cruise Port Located?

Conveniently located in the heart of the bustling city of Naples, the cruise terminal is a mere 10-minute walk from the city center, in the bay of Naples.

The main port in which the cruise port can be found is called the Port of Naples or ‘Porto di Napoli’ in Italian .

The main port of Naples houses cargo and container ships as well as has a dedicated passenger cruise terminal with 10 mooring places.

The Naples cruise terminal can be found to the west of the harbor and is made up of three piers.

The largest pier (known as Stazione Maritima) houses a handful of eateries and even a shopping center.

How to Get to Naples City Center from the Cruise Port

There are a number of ways to reach Naples city center from your cruise ship.

Naples Cruise Port is only a 10-minute walk from the city center . The walk from the cruise terminal is straightforward, taking you down a path beside the road which will lead you right into the city.

Alternatively, shuttle buses are available between the cruise ship and the city center. These come and go at regular intervals.

Another option is to take a taxi. There is a taxi rank just outside the cruise terminal, and it is ideal to use if you want to venture slightly further afield.

Finally, there is an underground station close to the cruise terminal known as Municipio Station.

Reaching this station is a mere 10-minute walk from your cruise ship. It’s located to the north of Piazza Municipio, a large square next to Castel Nuovo, a grand medieval castle.

Are There Free Shuttles From Naples Cruise Port?

Best Shore Excursions from the Naples Cruise Port

There’s a vast range of shore excursions that you can enjoy from Naples Cruise Port. I have outlined some of my favorites below.

1. Piazza del Plebiscito

In the heart of Naples city, you will find Piazza del Plebiscito, a majestic square surrounded by elaborate buildings which are exceptional examples of neo-classical architecture, including the Royal Palace of Naples.

The Basilica Reale Pontificia San Francesco da Paola, a striking basilica, takes center stage here, characterized by Greek-style columns. In front of it are two equestrian statues.

The square can be marveled at independently. Alternatively, there are a number of tours of Naples available, which include visits to this fantastic square.

This full-day tour of Naples includes a walking tour through the city center, visiting Piazza del Plebiscito as part of the itinerary.

2. Wander around the Historic Center of Naples

Covering an expansive area of 1,700 hectares (4,200 acres), Naples’ historic old town is one of the largest in Europe.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naples is home to an abundance of historical sites, churches, squares, charming narrow streets, and a wealth of cafes, restaurants, and shops.

It also houses some incredible monuments, such as Castel Nuovo (an ancient castle) and the Royal Palace of Naples.

The good news is that the Historic Center of Naples is right beside the cruise port and is within walking distance from your cruise ship.

3. Visit the Ruins of Pompeii

Just south of Naples on Italy’s coastline, below Mount Vesuvius, sits the ancient town of Pompeii. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world.

A violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius covered the Roman city of Pompeii with 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash.

This ash actually preserved the city and, as a result, offers visitors a one-of-a-kind snapshot of ancient Roman life.

One of the best ways to visit and learn about Pompeii is via a guided tour. This small group tour of Pompeii with an archaeologist has excellent online reviews.

Pompeii is a 40-minute taxi ride from Naples Cruise Port.

Alternatively, you can journey to Pompeii via train. Trains run between the main station in Naples, Napoli Centrale, and Pompei Scavi Villa Dei Misteri 7 times per day. The journey takes roughly 30 minutes.

The easiest way to reach Napoli Centrale from Naples Cruise Port is to take the metro from Municipio station.

⭐️ Book your Pompeii Small Group tour with an Archaeologist from Naples here!

4. Visit Capri Island

Capri is a beautiful island in the bay of Naples, just south of Naples city. It’s an incredibly scenic island, its coastline made up of rugged cliffs and secluded caves, including the famous Blue Grotto cave, which is illuminated by cracks in the cave walls.

One of the best ways to explore Capri Island is via boat tour. This full-day boat tour from Naples takes you to the Blue Grotto, amongst other excellent sights on the island.

Alternatively, you can take a public ferry from Naples straight to the Isle of Capri. There are a number of ferries operating on this route which make multiple trips to and from the island each day.

If you’d like to visit both Pompeii and Capri for your day in Naples, then this full-day tour which combines both destinations may be what you’re looking for.

⭐️ Book your Pompeii and Capri tour from Naples here!

5. National Archaeological Museum

Perched on Piazza Museo Square is the National Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli in Italian).

The museum is impressive to look at, originally built in 1585 as cavalry barracks before eventually being converted into both a museum and palace in the 19th century.

The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums in the world, housing one of the largest collections of Roman artifacts.

Pieces from Pompeii and Herculaneum can be found in this impressive building.

The museum is located deep within Naples City and is either a 30-minute walk from the cruise terminal or a 20-minute taxi ride

⭐️ Check Ticket Prices and Availability of the National Archaeological Museum here!

6. Amalfi Coast

At the southern tip of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, you can find the Amalfi Coast, a 50-kilometer (31-mile) stretch of picturesque coastline characterized by colorful cliff-side villages and secluded beaches.

The coastline is named after the town of Amalfi, the historical and political center of the area. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the coastline comprises a number of quaint fishing villages.

From Naples, it’s a 1.5-hour taxi drive south to the town of Amalfi.

You pass through Pompeii on your way, so if you are interested in seeing both attractions from Naples, it makes sense to combine them into one trip.

Another way to visit the Amalfi Coast is via a guided shore excursion . This guided tour from Naples takes you to three gorgeous seaside towns along the Amalfi Coast.

You can alternatively arrange a comfortable private transfer from Naples to Amalfi Coast, which allows you to explore the coastline at your own pace.

⭐️ Book your Semi-Private Amalfi Coast Shore Excursion Experience here!

7. Castel Nuovo

Perched on the edge of Naples city is a medieval castle that overlooks Naples Cruise Port.

Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino, was built in 1279 and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.

It can be found just in front of Piazza Municipio, a large square.

The castle has five round towers, which are connected by sturdy castle walls. The entrance is a beautiful marble triumphal arch.

The castle is open 7 days a week, and it costs €6 per entrance ticket.

The castle can be explored on a guided walking tour. You can choose between a private tour or a small group tour.

⭐️ Book this Private Tour to see the Castle Nuovo in Naples here!

8. Eat Pizza

Naples is known as the home of pizza; it’s the very city where the delicious Margherita pizza originated. If you love pizza, trying a traditional pizza in Naples really is a must!

One of the funniest and most hands-on ways to try the local pizza is to take part in a pizza-making class.

In one of these cooking classes, you will learn how to make traditional Margherita and, of course, get to sample your own wonderful creation.

If you are gluten-intolerant, there are gluten-free pizza classes also available.

Another great way to enjoy the local cuisine is to go on a food tour .

This Napoli food tour allows you to try pizza and a traditional dessert called sfogliatella.

Getting From Naples Airport to the Cruise Port

Naples International Airport is located just north of the city center. The easiest way to journey between Naples Cruise Port and the airport is via taxi.

A typical taxi ride will take around half an hour, however, do note that the traffic can get very congested when journeying through the city center and so it could take longer than this.

Another way to journey from the airport to the Naples port cruise terminal is via bus.

The Naples Alibus Airport shuttle bus journeys to Naples Molo Beverello Port which is where the cruise port is located.

Tickets cost €5 per person. Buses are available roughly every 20 minutes.

Places to Stay Near Naples Cruise Port

In the heart of the city is a charming B&B known as Ciao Bellini , near Naples National Archeological Museum. This accommodation has exceptional online reviews.

Another option is Santa Chiara Boutique Hotel , nestled within the Historic Center, within walking distance from the cruise port of Naples.

Slightly outside the city center is Gold Tower Lifestyle Hotel , just 2.1 km from Naples Central Train Station. This 4-star hotel features modern rooms and a fantastic city view.
