Your Safari start page, or "homepage", is the page that loads whenever you start Safari. You can change this page to whatever you'd like, but if you have an adware infection it may keep getting reset. If this is the case, you can try manually removing the adware so that you can regain your control. If you use an iOS device, you can create custom shortcuts to simulate a traditional start page.

Changing Your Homepage

Step 1 Open the Safari browser.

  • If you're using Safari for Windows, click the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences". It is highly recommended that you switch to a more up-to-date browser, as Safari for Windows is no longer supported by Apple and is not receiving any security updates.

Step 3 Select the General tab if it isn't already.

  • You can also click Set to Current Page to set your new homepage to the page that is currently open.
  • If your homepage keeps resetting to something else, red on to the next section.

Can you change the homepage on Safari?

Like all web browsers, Safari also lets you set any website as your homepage. But there’s one catch. You can only do this on your Mac. Safari for iOS and iPadOS has no option to set a preferred homepage. However, to make your most visited websites more accessible, you can add them to your iPhone’s home screen . Once you do that, they will appear as app icons on the home screen. Tapping on them will redirect you to their respective web pages in Safari.

Mac users can not only set a homepage, but they can also choose whether the homepage loads by default every time they open a new tab or window. Like the iPhone, your Mac also allows you to make a desktop for any website. You can do this simply by dragging the URL and dropping it on the desktop. This is a great trick for creating app-like icons for apps that are not available on Mac (like Netflix and Google Calendar).

How to Add Safari Website Shortcuts to iPad's Home Screen

For iPads running iOS 7 and above

ipad safari new tab homepage

What to Know

  • Open Safari > go to web page you want to add as Home screen icon > Share icon > Add to Home Screen .
  • Next, edit the shortcut name (optional) > select Add to save the shortcut.

This article explains how to add an iPad Home screen icon for a specific web page to serve as a shortcut to that page.Information applies to iPads with iOS 7 through iPadOS 16.

How to Add a Home Screen Icon for a Web Page

The iPad home screen displays icons for navigating through your applications and settings. Among these apps is  Safari , Apple's web browser, which is included with all its operating systems. One especially useful feature is the ability to put shortcuts to your favorite web pages on the iPad Home screen.

Making a Home screen icon for a web page that you visit frequently saves time. Here's how to do it.

Select the Safari icon to open the main browser window.

Go to the web page that you want to add as a Home screen icon. Select the  Share  button at the top or bottom of the browser window. It's represented by a square with an up arrow.

In the window that opens, scroll across or down and select  Add to Home Screen .

In the interface that opens, edit the name of the shortcut icon you are creating, if needed. This step is optional, but a short name is best. It represents the title that displays on the Home screen under the icon.

Select  Add to save the shortcut.

Your iPad's Home screen now contains an icon that takes you directly to your chosen web page.

If you have multiple home screens, it may appear on a screen that isn't filled.

You can move the shortcut and organize it like any other app icon. When you no longer need it, delete it in the same way that you would delete apps from the iPad .

  • How to have Safari close tabs automatically

There are some pretty significant changes to Safari in iPadOS 15, and you can further customize your experience with a few hidden-away settings relating to the Tab Bar. Here's how you can change iPadOS 15 tab behavior.

How to switch to a Compact Tab Bar in Safari for iPadOS 15

You have a couple of options when it comes to your Tab Bar's appearance in iPadOS 15 : Separate or Compact.

Separate takes up more space but offers a more familiar-looking appearance with the address bar displayed above your open tabs.

Compact takes up less space by having your currently viewed tab act as an address bar, meaning you can get more content on screen. Compact also matches the Tab Bar's color to the site you are viewing, effectively extending the page to the edge of your iPad's screen.

  • Open your Settings app.
  • In the sidebar, scroll down and tap Safari .

How to open Safari links in new tabs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Everyone browses the web differently. And whether you’re working, researching, or just bumming around the internet, you want control over the links you open.

In Safari , you have various ways to open links on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. One of the easiest ways to open a link is in a new tab. This lets you keep your current page open but still have a look at the link you click or tap.

Here, we’ll show you a few ways to open a link in a new tab in Safari. From opening it in the background or moving right to it, to shortcuts and settings, you decide how to open your links .

Safari Open Link in New Tab on iPhone

How to open new tabs in Safari

On iphone and ipad.

At times, when you tap a link from a webpage in Safari on iOS, it’ll open in a new tab. But many websites don’t want you to navigate away. So if you visit a site and tap to read an article, for example, it’ll open in the same tab. Here’s how to change this.

Instead of tapping a link on a webpage, press and hold the link . This will display the shortcut menu. From there, tap Open in New Tab .

Safari Open in New Tab on iPhone

When you do this, the link opens in a new tab and you switch to that new tab automatically . But you can change this too. You can still open the link in a new tab but do so in the background.

1) Open iPhone Settings and select Safari .

2) Under Tabs, pick Open Links .

3) Choose In Background .

Now, when you press and hold a link to display the shortcut menu, tap Open in Background . This will open the link in a new tab but won’t switch you over to it immediately . This way, you can continue viewing the site you’re on and pop over to that tab when you’re ready.

You have different options in Safari on Mac than you do on iOS. You can control links by opening them in new tabs instead of new windows automatically and use a shortcut to immediately open links in new tabs.

Open Safari and click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar. Select Tabs at the top. Then configure these options.

Open pages in tabs instead of windows : Select either Automatically or Always from the drop-down. The difference between these is that Automatically will open the link in a new tab unless that link is designed for a specific format. Always will open it in a new tab regardless.

Command-click opens a link in a new tab : If you check this box, you can hold your Command key, click the link, and the page will open in a new tab.

When a new tab or window opens make it active : Check this box only if you want to immediately switch to the new tab when it opens. If you prefer to leave it open in the background, don’t check the box.

Along with the above adjustments, you can always open a link in a new tab with a right-click. Right-click the link and select Open Link in New Tab .

This is how you can take control of the links you open in Safari. Open them in new tabs, switch right to them or open them in the background and use shortcuts. It’s all in your hands!

How to change the safari home page on a mac.

Tired of opening Safari and seeing Favorites? Here's how to set your homepage to your favorite website in Safari on Mac.

Traditionally, a homepage is the first website your browser loads when you start it. But by default, Safari on Mac opens up a window of Favorites instead. If you'd like Safari to start with a website of your choice, follow these simple steps.

First, open the Safari web browser by clicking its icon in the dock, by using Spotlight Search , or by selecting it from the macOS Applications folder . From there, navigate to the page you'd like to use as your home page. It can be any website you want.

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Safari > Preferences.

In Preferences > General, click the "Set to Current Page" button. This changes your home page to the current website Safari has open.

After clicking the button, the address in the "Homepage" field will change to the address of the current page.

Next, we'll make it so you see your home page when you open Safari. In Preferences > General, click the drop-down menu beside the "New Windows Open With" listing.

In the drop-down menu, select the "Homepage" option.

If desired, you can repeat the same step with the "New Tabs Open With" option. In that case, every time you open a new tab, you'll see your home page.

Are you certain that you closed all your tabs - and have not, perhaps, opened a new Safari Window? Each Safari Window has its own self-contained set of open tabs.

When you open Safari, you may see the Shelf at the bottom of the screen - within which you will see each of your open Safari Windows; simply tap the thumbnail corresponding with the Safari Window (with associated tabs) that you wish to view.

If you closed a Safari Window - and all associated tabs - you can reopen a Recently Closed Window for a limited period of time…

Starting from a Home Screen, assuming that Safari is visible in the Dock, touch-and-hold (i.e., long touch) the Safari icon; an Action Menu will appear.

From the menu, select Show All Windows ; you will now see a screen that closely resembles the Task Switcher - but you will only see preview windows for your open Safari Windows. At top-right (or top-left for iPadOS16/17) you will see the Reopen Closed Window(s) button.

ipad safari new tab homepage

You should note that the Reopen Closed Window(s) button allows you to reopen a window for a limited period of time. If left too long, you may have lost the opportunity to recover the closed window - and with it the tabs and related tab history.

If you have accidentally closed all you your open tabs associated with a Safari Window, this User Tip may be helpful in recovering your tabs. While I have not [yet] updated the document to reflect changes in iPadOS15/16/17 (having been written for an earlier version of iPadOS, much of it is still relevant - as are the outlined strategies:

iPadOS - Safari - Lost Windows, Lost Tabs… - Apple Community

How many tabs do you have open when this happens? Each tab needs an allocation of memory, and if your tab count is getting too big you might be exhausting the available resources. At that point it is likely Safari will either try to manage the memory usage by closing tabs you have not used recently, or it is possible some tabs might simply crash. If Safari is closing tabs to manage a resource shortage it is probably Working As Designed, and the only way to prevent this would be to upgrade your hardware for a device with more resources in the pot.

There are better ways to maintain a record of important or regularly viewed pages in Safari. Try setting bookmarks for the most important, or close tabs you don't need immediately and find them again in the History (or bookmarks).

The Little Known Safari Feature Even Google Chrome Can't Do On iPhone

safari chrome iphone browsers

With every new version of iOS comes a slew of useful upgrades that could change the way you do certain tasks on your iPhone. Most of these updates improve upon the functionality of Apple's slate of built-in apps. In the case of Safari, thanks to the latest version of iOS 17, iPhone's mobile browser now lets you create multiple profiles to keep work-related searches separate from your personal ones. It's also more responsive and does a better job of providing more applicable suggestions that match your original query.

Of the many useful and game-changing Safari features you can take advantage of on your iPhone, one was actually first introduced with iOS 15: the ability to create tab groups. On a computer, this feature is incredibly essential for those who use web browsers regularly and need to organize and consolidate the many pages they have open. Not many mobile browsers offer this functionality. Based on testing, tabs can't be added to groups through Google Chrome on iOS.

If you own an iPhone and happen to have a different default web browser assigned, find out why it may be worth reverting to Safari and make using tab groups one of your mobile browsing habits.

How tab groups work in Safari on iPhone

If you're the sort of person who likes to click on links and read them on Safari, a "tab group" is essentially a feature that lets you compile several webpages currently open on your mobile browser app into collections. Although you can technically add any page to any tab group, the function is more useful as a method for organizing all the links you have yet to read into similar, smaller, more manageable sets and allows you to find the page you need more easily. For instance, you can add recipe pages to a Food tab group, news articles to a Current Events tab group, and Reddit threads to a Random Learning tab group. You get the idea.

To add an open Safari web page to a new tab group using your iPhone:

  • Launch the Safari app.
  • Tap the Tabs view switcher. It's the two-square icon in the bottom navigation bar.
  • Long-press on one of the page tiles you'd like to add to a tab group.
  • Select Move to Tab Group.
  • Tap New Tab Group.
  • Type in your desired name and hit Move.

Once you have several tab groups in place, you can easily switch between them by tapping the Tabs icon and swiping left or right on the tab group name carousel at the bottom of the screen. You can also hit the List icon between "+" and Done to see all the tab groups you created in one go.

Other things you can do to Safari tab groups on an iPhone

To rename a tab group, tap the Tabs icon and then hit the List icon between "+" and Done at the bottom of the screen. Then follow these steps:

  • Tap the three-dot icon next to the tab group name you want to update.
  • Select Rename.
  • Enter a new name.

If you'd like to finetune the theme of your tab groups so that collated pages are more relevant to each other in terms of content, you can opt to move a tab from one group to another:

  • Open the tab you'd like to relocate on Safari.
  • Long-press on the Tabs icon.
  • Pick a group you've already created, or create a new one entirely.

You can also improve organization within tab groups by reordering them according to your preferences:

  • Tap the Tabs icon.
  • Swipe on the tab group names at the bottom of the screen till you get to the one you want to rearrange.
  • Long-press on any tab in the group and drag it to your preferred spot.
  • Alternatively, you can long-press on any tab in the group, select Arrange Tabs By from the menu, and pick one of the sorting options.

Finally, you can pin an open tab to prioritize it from other links in the collection:

  • Select the tab group you want from the bottom navigation bar.
  • Long-press on the tab you want to pin.
  • Select Pin Tab from the menu.

This will minimize the tab to a smaller size, but it will always stay at the top of the tab group it belongs to, so it's the first thing you see when you view the collection.

iOS 17.5 Features: What's New in iOS 17.5

Apple recently released iOS 17.5, the newest version of iOS. It brings some major changes to the iPhone if you're in the European Union, and some smaller updates if you're not.

App Downloads From Websites (EU Only)

iOS 17.5 brings support for web-based app distribution in the European Union, letting developers offer their apps for download directly on their websites. ‌iPhone‌ users can download iOS apps from supported websites without using the App Store .

As with the iOS 17.4 changes that added alternative app marketplaces, this functionality is limited to the ‌iPhone‌ and can only be used in the EU. Developers need to be a member of the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more and must have more than one million first installs on iOS in the prior year to offer an app for download.

All apps downloaded from websites onto iPhones must submit to Apple's notarization process, and while there is no commission to pay to Apple, Apple does charge a 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee. Though this is only available on the ‌iPhone‌ right now, Apple will bring the same functionality to the iPad later this year .

Apple News+

Apple News + now has an offline mode that provides access to the Today feed and the News+ tab even without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

‌Apple News‌+ includes a new daily word game called Quartiles. The game requires players to combine tiles to form words and earn points. Quartiles is limited to customers who have a paid ‌Apple News‌+ subscription.

iOS 17

Third-Party Item Tracker Alerts

iOS 17.5 adds support for third-party item trackers, a feature that Apple has been working on since last year.

Apple and Google developed a cross-platform solution for unwanted tracking alerts, and iOS 17.5 will let ‌iPhone‌ users know when a third-party tracker is nearby. "You can disable this item and stop it from sharing its location with the owner. To do this, follow the instructions provided on a website by the manufacturer of this item," reads code in the update.

Apple's release notes say that Cross-Platform Tracking Detection has been designed to provide notifications to users if a compatible Bluetooth tracker they do not own is moving with them, regardless of what operating system the device is paired with.

Google launched its Android-based Find My Device network in April, timed with the initial rollout of Cross-Platform Tracking Detection.

Repair State

iOS 17.5 includes a repair state option that lets an ‌iPhone‌ be sent in for service without deactivating Find My and Activation Lock.

ios 17 5 repair state

The repair state option leaves ‌Find My‌ turned on, and the ‌iPhone‌ continues to be trackable with the ‌Find My‌ app while it is being repaired. An ‌iPhone‌ put into a repair state lists that it is "Ready for Repair" in the ‌Find My‌ device section, and the ‌iPhone‌ remains functional while in the repair state.

Podcast Widget

The Podcasts widget that can be added to the Home Screen or the Lock screen now features a background that changes depending on the art of the podcast that's being played.

Mobile Device Management

MDM solutions are able to enforce a beta version during automated device enrollment. Automated device enrollment is designed to simplify initial device setup.

Code Changes

There were some code changes that we found in the iOS 17.5 beta that reference an ‌iPad‌ battery health feature that could possibly be available on the latest iPads. Battery health is not listed as an iPadOS 17.5 feature, so it is not clear if it is a feature that is available or something coming at a later date.

An ‌iPad‌ Battery Health menu would likely show maximum remaining capacity and charge cycle count, similar to the Battery Health menu on ‌iPhone‌.

There were also references to a "Block All Participants" option for group FaceTime calls, possibly for blocking spam, but it also has not been implemented.

Why not use google messages app that is built on RCS standard ? serious question.
For our iOS users they have to download it directly from the App Store some of those users do not have an Apple account so they’re not able to participate. This will be a useful feature as soon as it comes to the states for these types of users that don’t have App Store accounts.

While you won't find the just-announced 2024 Apple iPad Air or Apple iPad Pro tablets on sale just yet, you can find some great deals on other iPad models, as well as an assortment of popular and powerful Android and Amazon Fire tablets.

For help choosing the perfect iPad model, we've just updated our comprehensive, 2024 Apple iPad buyer's guide and roundup of the best Apple iPads for college students . If you're seeking out one of the latest Android tablets, we've got you covered with our coverage of the six best Android tablets for 2024 and best tablets for 2024 .

Best tablet deals in 2024

Our team of shopping experts has compiled this roundup of pre-Memorial Day deals you can snag today.

Apple iPad (9th Generation): $249 (24% off)

Apple iPad (9th Generation)

Although Apple just dropped the price of the slightly newer Apple iPad (10th Generation) , so it now starts at just $349, if you're looking for a really low-cost iPad, the previous model is on sale right now on Amazon for just $249. This makes it the least expensive iPad you can get.

The iPad (9th Generation) is an entry-level model that's a great starter tablet for kids. However, it's just as suitable to anyone who needs just basic tablet functionality from an iPad that offers a 10.2-inch Retina display, 64GB of internal storage and up to a 10 hour battery life.

This model runs using the older Apple A13 Bionic processor, but it comes with the latest version of iPadOS and the same preinstalled apps as newer and more advanced iPads.

Apple iPad Air (5th Generation): $650 (13% off)

Apple iPad Air (5th Generation)

If you're looking for a mid-priced iPad that's thin and light, the iPad Air (5th Generation) might be what you're seeking. This model was just one-upped by the just-announced 2024 iPad Air tablets, so it's not the newest technology, but it still offers the power and versatility to handle everyday tasks.

This iPad Air is on sale right now for 13% off, which brings the price down to $650. It features a 10.2-inch Retina display, includes 64GB of internal storage and offers up to a 10-hour battery life.

This edition of the iPad Air also runs the latest version of iPadOS and comes with the same collection of preinstalled apps as the most current iPads. It runs using Apple's M1 processor. It's just 0.29 inches thick and weighs 1.07 pounds.

Apple iPad Mini (6th Generation): $400 (save $100)

Apple iPad Mini (6th Generation)

This is the most current version of Apple's most compact iPad -- the iPad Mini (6th Generation). It offers the same power and functionality that you'd expect from an Apple tablet, only it's more compact. Right now, you can save $100 on this iPad Mini and buy it for just $400 on Amazon.

With this more compact iPad, you get an 8.3 inch Liquid Retina display and 64GB of internal storage. It runs using the Apple A15 Bionic processor and comes in your choice of four casing colors. If you tend to use your iPad for reading e-books, the iPad Mini is a great option because it's lighter and more comfortable to hold in your hands for extended periods.

It's just 2.5 inches thick, weighs 0.65 pounds and has up to a 10 hour battery life. Like all iPads, there's an Apple Pencil stylus, optional keyboard and a vast selection of apps available for it. As an e-reader, it works with all of the popular e-book reading apps, including Apple Books, Kindle, Nook and Libby.

2024 Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ 11" Android tablet: $220 (19% off)

Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+

For fans of Android mobile devices, it's easy to find powerful and versatile tablets that run this popular operating system for a fraction of what you'd pay for a mid- to high-end Apple iPad. This 2024 Samsung Talaxy Tab A9+ is the perfect example. Right now, Amazon has it on sale for just $220, which is 19% off its usual $270 price.

The tablet offers an 11-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, 128GB of internal storage and a quad speaker system. It's able to handle multitasking with ease. It comes in a graphite or silver casing color. One of the things we love about the Samsung tablets is that most have a microSD memory card slot built in, so you can expand the storage capacity easily and whenever you choose.

This model offers a 7,040 mAh rechargeable battery, so it provides all-day battery life, as well as a quick charge feature. It runs using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor and measures 10.12 x 6.64 x 0.27 inches.

2023 Amazon Fire HD 10: $95 (32% off)

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023)

Amazon offers a selection of extremely low cost tablets that run a modified version of Android that requires optional apps to be downloaded from the Amazon app store instead of the Google Play Store. However, at just $95 when on sale, it offers really good value for someone needing the most basic tablet functionality.

This model offers a 10.1-inch Full HD display and runs using an octa-core processor. This configuration includes 32GB of internal storage, but you can upgrade to 64GB at the time of purchase. Using an optional microSD memory card, upgrading this tablet's storage capacity at anytime is simple. Battery life is up to 13 hours.

2023 Samsuing Galaxy Tab S9 11" Android tablet: $799 (save 13%)

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9

This 2023 version of the popular Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 tablet offers enough processing power for average users. It offers an 11-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 256GB of internal storage and runs using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

The tablet comes with an S-Pen stylus and is one of the very few tablets on the market that's waterproof and dust proof (rated IP68), so it's a lot more durable than most. We also like that the S9 offers a quick charge feature and a long battery life.

For a limited time, you can buy this tablet on Amazon for 13% off and pay just $799. It comes in your choice of a beige or graphite casing color.

Lenovo Tab M10 Plus (3rd Gen) 10" Android tablet: $140 (26% off)

Lenovo Tab M10 Plus 3rd Gen Tablet

Featuring a 10.6-inch Full HD (2K resolution) touchscreen display and 32GB of internal storage, this low-cost, entry-level tablet is a great option for first-time Android tablet users or anyone who doesn't need a lot of enhanced processing power of fancy features.

This tablet comes with Android 12 preinstalled and is on sale right now on Amazon for just $140 -- that's 26% off. In addition to being a great deal for the price, we love that this tablet is only 0.29 inches thick and weighs 1.03 pounds.

With this tablet, you can expect up to a 12-hour battery life. And when you stream video content from services like Netflix or Disney+, you can watch it at 1080p resolution.

2023 Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE 10.9" Android tablet: $413 (8% off)

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE

This 2023 edition of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S90 FE tablet offers less processing power than the company's most powerful Tab S9 Ultra tablet, but this one is more than adequate for the average using who wants to run Android apps on device with a 10.9 inch touchscreen display. It comes with an S-Pen stylus and 128GB of internal storage.

One of biggest selling points of the Tab S9 FE is that its waterproof and dust-proof (IP68 rated), which is not a feature any Apple iPad tablet can boast. This gives it an extra level of durability while being able to run the latest version of Android. Battery life is up to 18 hour. Thanks to its quick charge feature, you can fully recharge the battery in under 90 minutes.

Using the built-in microSD memory card slot, it's easy to upgrade the tablet's storage anytime. And the tablet's multitasking ability allows you run and switch between three apps at once.
