Cruises in Portugal: The Top 6 Cruise Holidays You Must Take

Are you looking for a way to explore Portugal just as the country’s famous explorers Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias did? Or perhaps you are looking for a luxurious and all-inclusive getaway abroad.

Today we’ll discuss what cruises are available in and to Portugal, which are the best ones to board and answer some common questions about cruise ships in Portugal.

Cruises in Portugal

Portugal is considered one of Europe’s top countries for both river cruises down the stunning Douro River and Mediterranean cruises that visit Spain, Italy and more.

Immune to the economic crises, the cruise industry continues to grow with more than 1.3 million cruise passengers entering the Portuguese ports just in 2017.

So, if you’re looking for a holiday where you can explore parts of Portugal without having to worry about anything else: accommodation, food, entertainment, are all taken care of, then this will be your kind of trip.

Should You Choose a Mediterranean Cruise or a River Cruise?

Choosing between the two types of cruises is not easy, it will all depend on how much time you have and what kind of experiences you’re looking for. Here’s a brief description of what you can expect from each type of cruise.

Mediterranean cruises in Portugal

A Mediterranean cruise from Portugal will take you along the coast from Lisbon to Porto and then onwards to other destinations like Spain.

These types of cruises are a comprehensive way to explore the Iberian Peninsula as they include accommodation, meals, and daily tours.

River Cruises in Portugal

Douro River Cruise

The Douro River is the main river where cruises depart from in Portugal.

It’s perfect if you want to wake up to incredible views each morning without repeatedly unpacking and packing your bags.

If you only want to visit Portugal, then riverboats offer journeys specifically designed for sailing the Douro River.

They don’t feature as many amenities as the big cruise lines, but you can be sure you’ll experience the same scenic views.

The boats also feature bars, lounges and dining areas, comfortable and even luxurious cabins, as well as the friendly and knowledgeable crew.

Take a trip down the Douro River with bePortugal’s tips .

Gourmet Cuisine

Gourmet Cuisine

Portugal may have given chiles to Asia, brought tea to England, and told the Japanese about tempura, but the country’s gastronomic heritage is still a bit of a mystery – bar the ubiquitous bacalhau and pastéis de nata. A luxury cruise to Portugal will help you enjoy all the country's lovely recipes with our destination-focused dishes and cocktails aboard. Lovers of international fare are not forgotten either: expect yummy Italian specialities in our famous La Terrazza, traditional classics in Atlantide or for those travelling on Silver Spirit, Asian-fusion and Japanese specialities in Indochine and Sheisin. Bom apetite!

Helpful tips

Dos. It is common practice in Spain to use the informal you (tú) from the first time you meet someone. Using the formal you (usted) can be perceived as insulting. It is also normal to kiss as a greeting, even if you do not know each other.

Don'ts. Spanish people like to dress to impress, especially during their pre-dinner walk, known as the paseo . Sloppy outfits are a no-go.

Unique features

When it was built in Lisbon in 1519, the Belém Tower was in the middle of the Tagus. It was created to protect the mouth of the river, as well as the Jerónimos Monastery, two strategic points of entry to the city. During the earthquake that devastated the Portuguese capital in 1755, the bed of the Tagus shifted and the tower ended up on the banks of the river.

An iconic Spanish dish, paella originated in Valencia. In the 18th century, it was prepared with rice from the nearby Albufera lagoon and meat from farmyard animals (chicken, rabbit, duck), finished with tomatoes, beans, sweet peppers and saffron. Some paella purists disagree with the addition of seafood, although it has become fairly standard. This version is known as paella de marisco .

Myths and legends

Legend has it that Ulysses founded the city of Lisbon by agreeing to become the king and prisoner of its half-woman, half-snake queen. After several years under her thumb, he longed to return to the sea and devised a trick to escape his sovereign. While attempting to pursue him, the creature became so contorted that she died. It is said that her undulating body created the seven hills that surround the city.

In the spotlight

The documentary The Silence of Others (directed by Robert Bahar and Almudena Carracedo, released in February 2019) gives a voice to the victims of the Franco dictatorship, calling the infamous "Pact of Forgetting" into question. Passed in 1977, two years after the death of Franco, this amnesty law plunged Spain into a sort of "amnesia", forcing the victims to stay silent and letting their persecutors remain free. However, many citizens have condemned this practice in recent years, even turning to the Argentine justice system.

Book. When The Tales of the Alhambra were first published in 1832, Granada's famous palace was almost abandoned. It was so unpopular with tourists the American author, Washington Irving, was allowed to live there for several months. He wrote the book while residing in the palace, weaving his own travelogue with fantastic tales about the place and its people. More profound than any travel guide, the Tales of the Alhambra plunge readers into the sumptuous surroundings of a forgotten Andalusia, located at the crossroads of civilisation.

Music. A popular song full of nostalgia and hope, the Portuguese fado recounts the lost loves, sorrow, and melancholy of the olden days, accompanied by stringed instruments. Originating in the working-class neighbourhoods of Lisbon, this style of music gradually gained popularity among the bourgeoisie and spread throughout Portuguese society. The fado was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.

Film. No discussion of Spanish cinema is complete without Pedro Almodóvar . The filmmaker presented his most recent film, Pain and Glory , at Cannes in May 2019. This semi-autobiographical work is a poignant addition to Almodóvar's extensive filmography, including High Heels, All About My Mother, Volver and Talk to Her , all set against a distinctly Spanish backdrop.

Sail the magical Venetian Lagoon and hear Russell Watson sing

best river cruises

Venice is a captivating city, almost frozen in time, where astoundingly beautiful buildings line a maze of canals — it's no wonder the sheer decadence of this place captures the hearts of so many. Part of the thrill of visiting Venice is getting swept up in its narrow streets, peering into windows displaying intricately painted masks and feasting on plates of risotto in piazzas. Join Good Housekeeping's fantastic music-themed Venice cruise with world-renowned tenor Russell Watson, which includes an exclusive intimate concert in this stunning and historic city and seven nights on board a luxury ship. You'll explore the lagoon's elegant waterways aboard S.S La Venezia. It's an incredible eight-day itinerary that takes you around the Venetian Lagoon to visit places such as Chioggia, Torcello, Mazzorbo and Burano.

S.S. La Venezia matches Venice's splendour in its opulent fittings, filled with accents that honour its location, including exquisite Venetian masks and Murano glass. Everything's included on this five-star cruise, from delicious food and wines to a choice of excursions around the islands.

Taste Portuguese wines on a Douro River cruise

best river cruises

The gorgeous Douro Valley is an enchanting and peaceful pocket of Portugal, famed for its port wine and loved for its storybook-style beauty. Terraced vineyards rise steeply from the winding river and are dotted with whitewashed Quintas - the region's terracotta-roofed wine estates - making it a particularly scenic area for a relaxing river cruise.

Sit on the sundeck of a ship to watch the scenery pass by, and delight your palate with some of Portugal’s most sensational wines on an eight-day round-trip cruise on the Douro River. You'll be able to explore the area and learn more about its port production — with plenty of opportunities to sample it yourself on visits to rustic Quintas

After arriving in Porto to board the A-ROSA ALVA, you’ll sail to Régua, a pretty riverfront town that’s produced port since the 18th century. You'll follow the Douro, hopping from place to place to where Portugal borders Spain before turning back. A highlight is visiting a Quinta in Pinhão where, depending on the season, you might get to take part in the traditional grape harvest, picking and crushing the grapes underfoot .

Glide along the Danube and see the Lipizzaner horses in Vienna

best river cruises

The banks of the Danube have seen the rise and fall of empires and provided inspiration to some of Europe's greatest artists and composers. This grand river winds its way past mysterious hillside castles and ancient medieval towns and meanders through a range of culture-rich cities, including four European capitals . A river cruise is an unbeatable way to explore some of the cities straddling the Danube, allowing you to visit several towns, villages and cities on one trip, without having to organise local transport yourself.

One of the finest cities that the Danube flows through is Vienna, once the home of Mozart, where manicured gardens, chic coffee houses and baroque palaces will have you feeling like you've stepped back in time. It's also the home of the Royal Lipizzaner Stables at the Spanish Riding School, where grand Lipizzan horses perform a mesmerising type of equine ballet. On Good Housekeeping's Danube River cruise you can visit the Royal Lipizzaner Stables with historian Lucy Worsley. You'll enjoy an aperitif and a talk before watching the training of the young stallions in the imperial atmosphere of the Baroque winter riding school, as classical Viennese music plays.

More Than 250 Cruise Ship Passengers Sick With Suspected Norovirus

H undreds of vacationers sailing aboard a P&O Cruises ship have fallen ill with suspected norovirus. Suffering from what’s been referred to a “vomiting bug”, reports indicate that over 150 guests are currently in isolation on board the MV Ventura, which departed from Southampton, England on May 11 for a 14-night voyage around the Canary Islands , with stops in Spain  and Portugal .

An unnamed source told Metro that, in the last four days alone, around 250 suspected cases of the illness have emerged, with passengers reportedly "throwing up in public spaces" throughout the ship. Another unidentified source revealed, "This is a serious outbreak. We don't know where it came from, it has been on board for a month, maybe 5-6 weeks now, and each cruise we think it has gone, but more and more people get sick."

While they did not delve into specifics, a P&O spokesperson did confirm to Business Insider that numerous passengers had reported "gastrointestinal symptoms" on board. They stated that, "upon embarkation, all guests were provided with an advisory notice with precautionary health measures for on board and on shore."

Regarding the current outbreak, P&O told the Mirror that it had activated a phased and prove approach that is “appropriate to the specific scenario”. A spokesperson said that the cruise line had "implemented proven and enhanced sanitisation protocols" and that a “further extended and enhanced sanitisation took place in Tenerife" while the ship was docked on Friday.

Although norovirus has not been confirmed as the cause of the contagion, it is a likely culprit for the spread of such symptoms aboard cruise ships. Also called the “vomiting bug”, it’s a highly transmissible virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea, which can spread through close contact with an infected person, touching your mouth after contact with contaminated surfaces or consuming contaminated food.

In close quarters, like those aboard a cruise ship, norovirus can spread especially rapidly. It’s worth noting that the United Kingdom (UK) saw a spike in norovirus activity last month. "Between weeks 14 to 17 of 2024, the total number of norovirus laboratory reports was 75% higher than the 5-season average for the same 4-week period," according to UK government report.

So, the virus could readily have made its way on board the Ventura in recent weeks and the vessel’s ongoing outbreak is not an entirely isolated incident. As far back as February, more than 120 passengers aboard Cunard's Queen Victoria cruise ship experienced similar symptoms, the cause of which was later confirmed to be norovirus. And, in January, 100 passengers and crew likewise came down with norovirus on board a Celebrity Cruises ship as it sailed roundtrip from Tampa to New Orleans and down through the Western Caribbean.

Altogether, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has documented six separate outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases on cruise ships, five of which were attributed to norovirus, while one was reported to have been caused by E. coli. This underscores the challenge that cruise lines face in preventing and managing such infections, despite their stringent health protocols and sanitation measures.

P&O Cruises' vessel, Ventura.

Luxury Cruises to Portugal

Portugal cruises will offer you an insight into its enchanting culture. Indulge in the country’s robust cuisine that celebrates the riches of the ocean and its lush, rolling countryside, not to mention the crisp whites, fruity reds, and famous port wine. Marvel at fairytale castles, lounge on endless sandy beaches, explore colorful markets, and experience ancient musical traditions. Most importantly, connect with the people, who are as warm and welcoming as the sunny climate.

Lisbon, the hilly capital, has wonderful architecture, a romantic old quarter, superb museums, and a thriving culinary scene. In the north, the glorious old city of Porto is a gateway to the riches of the Douro Valley, where port wine vineyards snake along steep hillsides and ornate palaces doze in the sunshine amid sprawling wine estates. The rugged Atlantic island of Madeira has its own charms, not least a beautifully preserved old city, Funchal, and some of the finest coastal walking in Europe. You may also call at the remote Azores, where you can explore dramatic volcanic scenery around Ponta Delgada, or join a whale-watching excursion. Sail to Portugal in luxury on a European cruise with Celebrity Cruises.

Portugal Cruise Highlights

Wine regions.

A cruise to Portugal will take you to some of the world’s most famous wine regions. From the port of Leixoes, you can visit the wild beauty of the Douro Valley, where sinuous vineyards and silvery olive groves line the river banks. Taste vintage ports, as well as the celebrated Mateus Rosé. From Lisbon, explore the lush countryside of the south to sample floral Moscatel wines. Madeira, meanwhile, produces its own fortified wines from grapes ripened in the Atlantic sunshine.

Historic Architecture

Exquisite castles and rugged fortifications are dotted all over Portugal. Don’t miss the 11th-century ramparts of the Castelo de São Jorge that snake across the hills of Lisbon and its stupendous views over the city’s terracotta rooftops. Visit the Torre de Belem to admire the intricate Manueline styling on this monument to the great explorers. And while the 19th-century turreted, red and yellow Pena Palace near Sintra is relatively modern, it’s a vision straight from a fairytale.

Experience the musical heritage of Portugal with a Fado performance. Fado is a uniquely Portuguese style of music that combines melodic notes from a mandolin or guitar with a melancholy tone and lyric, telling stories of life, love, and loss. It’s hauntingly beautiful to listen to and is especially prevalent in the intimate fado bars of the ancient Alfama District of Lisbon.

Holland America Line Opens Bookings for 2026 Grand World Voyage, Unveils 2026 Grand Australia and New Zealand Itinerary

Volendam and Zaandam to sail 132- and 93-day itineraries, respectively, exploring a combined 80 ports across the globe in roundtrip voyages from U.S. homeports

Seattle, Washington, May 14, 2024 — Holland America Line has officially opened bookings for its 2026 Grand World Voyage aboard Volendam. The premium cruise line also unveiled and opened bookings for its 2026 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage on Zaandam. The two extended cruises sail roundtrip from the United States in January 2026 and will rendezvous in Sydney, Australia, during their journeys.

The newly unveiled Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage offers guests an immersive journey Down Under while also exploring Hawaii, Fiji, French Polynesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu across the South Pacific. With 10 extended port visits, guests have more time to explore the culture and nightlife in destinations like Papeete, Tahiti, and Raiatea, French Polynesia.

“Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world’s most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer for Holland America Line. “Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.”

With the Grand World Voyage sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage cruising roundtrip from San Diego, California, travelers can explore a variety of global destinations in ease without the need for international or long-haul air.

The Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage will visit 44 ports across 10 countries over the 93-day voyage. Guests sailing on this cruise will be privy to an intimate experience on one of Holland America Line’s perfectly sized ships, offering access to smaller ports.

The 2026 Grand World Voyage, which was announced in February but is now available for booking, will sail to 48 ports across 25 countries on an east-to-west route — traveling as far south as Antarctica and as far north as Oslo, Norway. Guests will experience all seven continents during the journey.

On March 7, 2026, Volendam and Zaandam will be at Sydney together. Zaandam arrives March 6 for an overnight, and Volendam arrives March 7 for an overnight.

· 44 total ports in 10 countries across two continents.

· Two-day Great Barrier Reef scenic cruising experience in the Ribbon Reef Region and Far North Region.

· Six overnight calls: Honolulu, Hawaii; Fremantle (Perth), Sydney and Hobart, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; and Papeete.

· Four late-night departures: Adelaide, Australia; and Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine, French Polynesia.

2026 Grand World Voyage Highlights — Volendam

· 132-day voyage. Departs Jan. 4, 2026, roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale.

· Volendam heads south along the east coast of South America, crossing the equator and sailing down to Antarctica for a four-day scenic cruising experience. The ship then makes its way up the west coast of South America and over to Easter Island before traversing the islands of the South Pacific en route to Australia. Volendam explores Singapore and the Maldives, then calls at Alexandria, Egypt, for an overnight stay before meandering through the Mediterranean and northern Europe, ending with an Atlantic Ocean crossing.

· 48 total ports in 25 countries across seven continents.

· Nine overnight calls: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Papeete; Sydney; Bali, Indonesia; Singapore; Malé, Maldives; Safaga (Luxor) and Alexandria (Cairo), Egypt; and Lisbon, Portugal.
