Janaki Kund is a famous place to visit near Chitrakoot. It is about 2 kilometers away from Chitrakoot main auto stand. You can reach here comfortably in your vehicle or by auto. It is located at a short distance from the main road. Here One has to come down stairs from the main road.

Janaki Kund is located near Ram Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Chitrakoot. The Mandakini river flows here. Here, there is a small Kund on the banks of river Mandakini where Sita Mata used to take bath. Here one can see the footprints of Sita Mata in a rock.

The environment around here is very beautiful. You can spend a good time by coming here. Sita Mata was the daughter of King Janak, hence she was called Janaki and this kund was called Janaki Kund. Sita Mata used to bathe here during her exile.

Ram Darshan Chitrakoot

Ram Darshan is a major place to visit near Chitrakoot. Ram Darshan is a museum where many items related to Shri Ram ji are available to see. Ram Darshan is built near the Sphatik Shila in Chitrakoot.

It is four kilometers away from the main Chitrakoot city. You can come here comfortably. Ram Darshan is situated on the main road. Here you can come by your bike and auto. Here the parking facility is located outside the temple.

Ram ji got angry seeing all this and Shri Ram ji hit Jayant with an arrow. Shri ram  made an arrow out of grass straws and hit Jayanta, which hit his eye and one of his eyes got injured. Since that time it is said that crows are short sighted in one eye. This is Famous legends.

Chitrakoot (चित्रकूट Citrakūṭ ) is a culturally and archaeologically significant town in Bundelkhand , split between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh . Though relatively unknown to tourists, the area is a pilgrimage destination known for a number of important temples and sites mentioned in Hindu scripture. It is well worth visiting if you have the time.

Many people gather here on special Hindu occasions throughout the year, each Amavasya, Somwati Amavasyas, Deepawali, Sharad-Poornima, Makar Sankranti and Ramanavami, and for general celebrations. These follow the Hindu calendar, so dates in the Western calendar change yearly.

Noted Ayurvedic and yoga centres like 'Arogyadham' are located in Chitrakoot and there are also Free Eye Hospital Camps.

You may get in by bus from Lucknow, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Jhansi, Jabalpur, Satna and Varanasi.

By plane [ edit ]

Prayagraj ( IXD  IATA ) and Varanasi ( VNS  IATA ) are nearest airports to Chitrakoot.

By car [ edit ]

Chitrakoot is 260 km (160 mi) from Varanasi and it takes about 5 hours to reach there. Typical cab fare will be about ₹3,500+tolls. One may also take a train from Varanasi via Manikpur Jn which takes 5 1/2 hours and costs ₹1000 or less.

Tuktuks and terrain vehicles take pilgrims from one site to another, prices are generally fixed but beware "official guides" and drivers who loiter in or around hotels.

• Ram Ghat ( Take a shared tuk-tuk from the train station, prices are fixed at 15 rupees. most people arriving at the station will be going there ). Ramghat is the main feature of Chitrakoot and resembles a minature varranassi with river boats and pilgrims. It is located on the banks of the quiet river Mandakini. It is an important pilgrim spot and there are many ashrams where holy men in saffron dresses meditate and offer the solace of their wisdom to the large number of pilgrims who congregate there. • 25.09793 80.76879 1 Gupt Godavari ( It is around 18 km from Chitrakut and 10 km from Anasuya Atri Ashram. ). Gupt Godavari is a natural wonder consisting of two caves. There is a pond known as 'Sitakund' in one of these caves which is perpetually fed by a small stream of water. It is believed that Ram and his brother Lakshman held court in the cave with a stream of water running along its base and two natural throne-like rocks. It really is quiet nice, be prepared to walk through knee deep water on uneven ground. Entrance is ten rupees but beware, the ticket office may fry to sell you multiple tickets and the cave is full of shameless priests who will demand donations, offerings, larger donations, and are not above grabbing tourists! Assume you will loose at least 50 rupees. ( updated Feb 2019 )
• Hanuman Dhara . Hanuman Dhara is a spring located on a steep hillside in Chitrakut. On foot one has to climb a steep flight of 650 steps to reach this place. There is a big statue of Lord Hanuman, on which the water of this spring tumbles over. It is believed that, Hanuman Dhara was created by Ram to assuage Hanuman when he returned after setting Lanka on fire. Another 180 steps from here will get you to the Sita Rasoi. You may avoid the 650 steps by taking the newly launched (as of 2021) cable car ride by DRIL for ₹130 for a 2-way ticket. ( updated Aug 2021 )
• 25.15878 80.86437 2 Janaki Kund . Janaki Kund is situated 2 km south of Chitrakoot in Satna District, on the banks of the Mandakini River. Literally ‘Janaki Kund’ means the ‘Pool of Sita’. According to a legend, it was the favorite bathing spot of Sita, during the years of exile with her husband Lord Ram. It is said that Sita's footprints are imprinted on the rocks here. It is a quiet place which is blessed by Sita and people consider it auspicious to bathe here.  
• Kamtanath Mandir . Some people said that during exile of lord Ram. Rama prayed to Kamtanath (Deity of local villagers) to fight with devils. After darshan in temple one must do parikrama of 5.5 km around the Kamadgiri hill.  
• 25.16531 80.83786 3 Lakshaman Pahari . Some people believed that during exile younger brother of Ram stayed on the Lakshaman Hill. Lakshman hill is situated on half way of Parikrama path of Kamdgiri.  
• Sati Anusuiya . Sati Anasuya Temple is located at Sati Anasuya in Chitrakut District of Uttar Pradesh. It enshrines the idol of Sati Anasuya, the wife of saint Atri, with her three babies who are said to be the incarnations of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswar. The 24 different forms of god appeared on the earth can be found here in the form of idols. The Mandakini River flows nearby. The ancient ashram of Rishi Atri is above the temple.  
• Sfatik Shila . Sphatik Shila is situated in a densely forested area to the south of Chitrakoot in Satna District. This picturesque spot is famous for its two massive rocks which are believed to have the footprints of Lord Ram. It is located within a short distance beyond Janaki kund, on the banks of the Mandakini River. According to legend it was here that Sita was pecked at by Jayant, son of Lord Indra, in the form of a crow.  
• 25.15445 80.88317 4 Sita Rasoi . This is believed that this place was the kitchen of Lord Ram’s wife Sita. Sita Rasoi is situated on the peak of the Hanuman Dhara Hill.  
• Shivani Shakti Peeth ( Phoolmati Devi Temple ), Ramgiri, Chitrakoot . 7.30 AM - 11 AM and 1 PM to 7.30 PM . One of the 51 Shaktipeeth in India. Inside the Temple, there is an idol of Lord Shiva known as Chanda. Festivals like Ramnavami, Makar Sankranthi and Deepavali are celebrated here. According to Hindu Mythology it is the holy place where Right breast of maa Durga felt down. Maa is worshiped here with the name Maa Shivani/ Gayatri and her concert, Bhaitavs is worshiped with the name Chanda. ( updated Sep 2023 )

Walk around Kamdgiri Hill, a holy site where many pilgrims walk barefoot and push coconuts. Don't miss the huge unsigned spiral well on the left of the path maybe 50m from the turn off to the cable car up the nearby hill. There are lots of tourist shops and monkeys.

Enjoy the view of pilgrims bathing in the Ghat.

Go shopping for second hand clothes left by other pilgrims (or "found" by locals). Piles of clothes can be found on the edge of town on the road to Kamtanath Mandir. Shirts are about ₹40.

Enjoy the aerial view of Chitrakoot by taking the 5-minute Hanumandhara Ropeway ride to the Hanumandhara Temple where an eternal spring exists with no known source. Legend has it that the spring materialised when Hanuman (the monkey god) came back after burning Lanka and asked Ram to put out the fire in his tail. Locals claim that the water has miraculous healing properties. The ropeway ride saves you from climbing up 650 steps and costs ₹130 for a two-way ticket (as of 10th August 2021).

This region is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and unlike in Varanasi or areas more visited by foreigners, not much funny business will be tolerated.

It is expected for you to abstain from drinking and using cannabis in public, and you probably shouldn't at all.

Interfering with the pilgrims by taking intrusive photos or detracting from the holiness of the various sites will earn you a lot of frowns; this includes posing for selfies too close to the holier sites with the multitude of pilgrims who will likely ask.

1. kamadgiri.

Kamadgiri city is the heart of the Chitrakoot. The town surrounds itself with various temples at the base. With the expectation that all their sorrows will end and their dreams will come true by doing so. The pilgrims perform Parikrama around this hill.

Kamadgiri’s name came from Kamadnathji, another name of Lord Rama, which means satisfying all desires. On the 5-kilometer path of the Parikrama, there are many temples. One of the most prominent is the Bharat Milaap temple. The place where Bharat met Lord Ram and persuaded him to return to his kingdom.

2. Gupt Godavari

This is a pair of caves in which there is a narrow entrance that you can barely move through. In streams from the other cave, water trickles down, which can reach up to the length of our knees. The locals say that Lord Rama and Lakshman have met once secretly here.

The structures present in the cave confirm it apparently by the throne. You will witness the mesmerizing beauty of the cave. It equally matches the likes of Elephanta caves , Ajanta, and Ellora caves . It is largely unknown to the world as the list goes on. This is a location that is slowly emerging as one of India’s most popular destinations.

4. Kalinjar Fort

Kalinjar is an ancient fort in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district. Situated on the Vindhya mountain range near the World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. It is one of the eight prominent forts of the Chandela kings. The mighty fortress goes up to an altitude of 1203 ft and overlooks the plains of Bundelkhand.

5. Bharat Milaap Temple

The serene ghat lining the Mandakini River, and he used to sit on the riverside and write Ram Charitra Manas. Ramghat is the hub of all religious activities and the most famous bathing ghat in Chitrakoot. It is a belief that taking a dip will absolve a person of all sins at Ramghat.

7. Hanuman Dhara

It sprouts from a rock when Lord Ram shot an arrow into it. He came to this place to extinguish the fire stuck in his tail. After he returned from burning Lanka to calm down an angry Hanuman.

Best Time to Visit Chitrakoot:

When the weather is good and not very humid. The best time to visit Chitrakoot is between July and March. The monsoon season, particularly from August onwards, is the ideal season for a visit.

How Can You Reach Chitrakoot?

Since Chitrakoot is located near the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, both states are within easy reach. Karwi, which is more or less the town of Chitrakoot itself, is the closest railway station to Chitrakoot. There are regular bus services to and from Chitrakoot, via well-connected highways, particularly the NH 76 National Highway. There is no direct connection to Chitrakoot by air. But you can take a flight to Allahabad or Khajuraho and a taxi is possible from there.

It is located at a distance of 19kms south of Ramghat. Godavari River emerges as perennial stream from rocks which is situated inside the cave and further it flows to other cave which is beyond it and all of a sudden it vanishes. A large rock of the river is said to be a form of Demon Mayank, who stole Goddess Sita’s clothes when she was having her bath. This demon Mayank was killed by God Laxman. 2. Don’t Miss The Steps Of The Popular River

Ram Ghat is located on the bank of Mandakini River, a long stretch of steps is made. Many holy men dressed in saffron dresses can be seen meditated. In the Ram Ghat, all three Ram, Laxamn and Sita stayed here at the time of their exile. After that the famous poet Tulsidas used to sit here. Chitrakoot Tourism And Travel Guide

Chitrakoot is a town in MP and UP (each in part) that is entirely religious in nature linked as it is to Lord Rama who stayed here with Sita and Laxman when they had left Ayodhya on self-imposed exile. Tourism in Chitrakoot is therefore rich in various aspects of Ramayana whether it is Bharat or Hanuman or some other personality connected with the epic. But, there is much more to see in Chitrakoot besides. Travel guide to Chitrakoot therefore lays out an interesting list of sites that you can and should visit.

How to Reach

Chitrakoot has no air connections with any city. However, it has a railhead at Karvi or Chitrakoot Dham. Chitrakoot is also well connected by road with all nearby cities and towns in MP or UP.

By Road:  

Chitrakoot is connected fairly well with other cities within MP and UP such as Satna and Jhansi besides Kanpur and Allahabad . One can also travel by buses from all nearby cities within MP and UP. There are taxis also that one can hire. Allahabad is about 135km away while Varanasi is around 275km away from Chitrakoot.

By Train:  

It is convenient for travellers to take a train to Karvi or Chitrakoot Dham from their starting point. At Karvi one can take a taxi for Chitrakoot which is only 8km away.

By Air:  

Chitrakoot does not have an airport. One can take a flight to Allahabad, 135km away or from Khajuraho airport, 175km away. Varanasi airport is yet another option and that is 275km away from Chitrakoot. Buses and taxis are available from all these places to get you to Chitrakoot.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Chitrakoot is a subtropical town. It is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. It does not rain a lot in this place and so tourists will find Chitrakoot comfortable in the monsoon.

Summer (March-June):

Chitrakoot is quite unbearable in summer with temperatures rising beyond 46°C. Though the nights are comfortable the minimum temperature is still fairly high at 29°C. The weather being harsh and uncomfortable summers are best avoided by visitors.

Monsoon (July-October):

Chitrakoot is very comfortable during the monsoon with temperatures remaining low. One can and should visit the place during August-October when the rains slow down a bit and one is treated with lush and dense vegetation all around. Since the visibility is good visitors will find touring quite attractive at this time.

Winter (November-February):

As far as the temperature is concerned Chitrakoot is cool or cold in winter. However, there is a problem with visibility owing to the haze and mist bordering on fog during winter in Chitrakoot. But, it is all right to visit Chitrakoot till December. January and February are best avoided on account of poor visibility.

The Mysterious Gupt Godavari:

The mysterious Gupt Godavari is a cave located about 19km from Ram Ghat. According to legends this is the place where Godavari River emerges and once again disappears in another cave that is located nearby. There is a massive rock which is protruding out from the roof of the cave and this is believed to be the remains of a demon known as Mayank.

Ancient Kalinjar Fort:

The ancient Kalinjar Fort is located in Banda in UP. It is among the 8 famous forts which were built by the Chandela dynasty. The fort is close to Khajuraho and is at a height of 1203’. Do visit the fort and take a look at stone images of the various gods such as Shiva and Vishnu. There are carvings in stone of birds and other animals as well.

Sacred Bharat Kup:

Bharat Kup is a small temple and there is a well nearby which is significant. This well is about 50km away from Chitrakoot and is supposed to be the place where Bharat stored sacred water that he had collected from the various places of pilgrimage he had been to. His intention was to use this water for the crowning of Lord Rama which he wanted to perform in Chitrakoot before starting off for Ayodhya .

Chitrakoot Falls - the Indian Niagara:

Chitrakoot Falls is a natural waterfall. It is located about 38km to the west of Jagdalpur . It is on the River Indravati which originates in Kalahandi region in the state of Odisha. The height of the fall is about 95’ and as it is the widest fall in India , it is known as the Indian Niagara. There is a Hindu shrine of Shiva and caves nearby named Parvati Caves.

Seek Blessings at Hanuman Dhara:

The Hanuman Dhara is a shrine that is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It is located around 5km away from Ram Ghat in a wooded hill. Legend has it that Hanuman wanted to douse his burning tail in the icy water of this place after destroying Lanka. Visitors can see the idol in the icy cold and clear water of the dhara. One must climb 360 odd steps in order to seek Hanuman’s blessings.

Beauty of Marpha:

Marpha is located about 4km from Gupt Godavari. A beautiful place with temples and the ruins of Chandel Fort, one will enjoy both the beauty and the magnificence of Marpha. Spend some time here and feel the vibes of the place while you listen to the songs of the holy people in saffron in an environment of incense.

Crystalline Sphatik Shila:

Sphatik Shila or crystalline rock is the flat boulder where Lord Rama and Sita were supposed to have sat. One need not be religiously inclined to enjoy the beauty of the place for its greenery and tranquillity.

Chitrakoot is a place where one can get good food at a price that does not burn a hole in your pocket. Try Annapurna or Ashok Restaurant in Ramghat for North Indian food. There is Jaipuria too which is a small and popular dhaba. You can also try Paryatak Awas Grah which is a restaurant run by the government. It offers good meals at bargain prices.  

Chitrakoot is just a small town in the hinterland of both UP and MP. You will not find big malls or shops here. But, there are local markets and several shops where you can pick up a souvenir or two to remember your trip by.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of the of the 150  "Best Places to Live in the U.S."  this week.

Here's how editors said the magazine determined its picks: Analyzing the 150 most populous metropolitan areas and evaluating several factors including  job prospects, affordability, growth and quality of life. 

Topping the 2023-24 list: Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The magazine called Green Bay "The perfect mix of big-city amenities complemented with a Midwestern, small-town feel."

In addition to being home to its National Football League team, the Green Bay Packers, the city "boasts a thriving entertainment and arts scene, revitalized downtown, and two college campuses, creating an energy that may appeal to young families as well as retirees."

After ranking the country's 150 largest metropolitan areas, Huntsville, Alabama ranked the 2nd best place to live in America beating (3) Raleigh Durham, North Carolina ; (4) Boulder, Colorado and (5) Sarasota, Florida.

Last on the list this year: The tropical island of Puerto Rico .

The top 25 included five Florida cities while Colorado and North Carolina both had three cities each on the list.
