7 Amazing Day Trips From Positano

day trips from positano

From looking glam in Sorrento and Capri to exploring the wonders of Pompeii and Naples, these are the best day trips from Positano.

Bella Positano! This cliffside village on Italy’s Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy. With its pastel-coloured houses cascading down to the sea, and bougainvillaea-draped streets, Positano is one of my favourite places to visit in Italy. No doubt, it’ll be yours soon too!

Positano day trips

As enchanting as Positano is, the surrounding area is also filled with amazing places to visit. You can immerse yourself in the luxurious lifestyle on the island of Capri , take a boat tour along the coast, or get lost in the back streets of Naples. If history is your thing, Pompeii and Ravello are just down the road from Positano too.

If you need any other help planning your time in Italy, don’t miss my guide to where to stay in Positano . I’ve shared my favourite hotel options, from budget-friendly apartments to the most luxurious hotels.

Positano features alongside Capri and Sorrento , on my ultimate Italy honeymoon itinerary as well as my suggested route for a southern Italian road trip .

Positano is a beautiful place to stay

Right, ready to hear about the best day trips from Positano? Let’s do this!

7 Best Day Trips From Positano

Escape to capri for the day.

Number one on my list of the best day trips from Positano is a visit to Capri, the jewel of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This beautiful island, just a short boat tour from Positano, is a place where the grandeur of nature meets the luxury of exclusive resorts, world-class food and chic boutiques.

Capri is a popular day trip from Positano

Can you imagine taking a luxury day trip from Positano to Capri ? You could stroll arm in arm with your partner as you pop by the island’s upmarket stores, where the air is full of the scent of designer perfumes and the rustle of silk beckons you to spend wildly! How about an afternoon sipping limoncello in the sun-drenched Piazzetta as you watch the world go by? Or you could spend your day sampling gourmet cuisine at one of the island’s superb cliffside restaurants.

If food and shopping aren’t quite your thing, the famous Blue Grotto is one of Italy’s most amazing places to visit. You’ll get to relax in a wooden boat as your skipper sings Neapolitan songs, while navigating through a tiny stone portal into a sparkling cavern lit by a natural glow of blue light! How magical does that sound? It’s one of the most stunning places in Italy – you simply have to see it with your own eyes!

Blue Grotto Capri

Visit the Towns of Amalfi and Ravello

Just a biscotti’s throw from Positano is Amalfi, the town that gives this part of Italy its name. This historic town is dominated by the magnificent Duomo di Amalfi which is decorated with beautiful Moorish arches and medieval frescoes. I’d recommend wandering through the maze of narrow streets surrounding the cathedral, discovering tiny cobbled squares and little cafes where you can stop for a quick espresso.

Amalfi Old Town

Perched above Amalfi, the village of Ravello is even more beautiful. The gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Camborne almost seem like they are built in the sky. You have the Mediterranean spread out below, framed by the colourful swirls and rows of statues in the gardens. These towns are perfect day trips from Positano if you feel like a break from the sea (as if!). You’ll find yourself taking endless photos too!

View from Villa Rufolo in Ravello

This beautiful town is an easy day trip from Positano and if you love lemons (like me), in Sorrento you will be in yellow, citrusy heaven! World famous for its lemon groves, Sorrento has a historic centre packed with ancient churches and lively piazzas.

Day trip from Positano to Sorrento

Sorrento is such a picturesque and charming place to wander around. It has the feel of a town that moves at a different pace.

You can wander down to the Marina Grande and set off on boat tours along the coast or just idle away an afternoon or evening watching the fishing boats come and go. But best of all, Sorrento is the place to try limoncello. In fact, I’d recommend booking this tour where you’ll get to look around a 150-year-old Limoncello factory. You’ll learn how the famous Italian beverage is made, and of course, sample some too!

Lemon garden in Sorrento

If you’re partial to a tipple or two, I’d also recommend stopping for a glass in one of the cafes around Piazza Tasso.

Pompeii and Herculaneum

Everyone knows the story about Pompeii: the city that was buried by ash from Vesuvius. But it’s not until you visit Pompeii and Herculaneum that you truly feel what happened.

Pompeii

This ancient city, along with its less famous but just as haunting neighbour Herculaneum, has history and tragedy etched into its stones and streets.

There are some tours you can book which will provide transport from Positano , but they often work out quite pricey. You’ll be able to source your own transport once you’re there. Then I’d recommend booking an entrance ticket with guided tour . You’ll be accompanied by an archaeologist with in-depth knowledge of the events that led to so many people being buried alive by the ash that rained down from Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. It’s very moving to see the remains of people and their everyday lives as you walk through their homes, forever frozen in stone.

Herculaneum

Ischia Island

Have you ever relaxed in a warming thermal spring? It’s a lovely experience where nature meets relaxation. Perhaps you’d like to go on a luxury day trip from Positano to an exclusive spa where all your cares are massaged and soaked away. Well, if you take a trip to Ischia Island, out beyond glitzy Capri, this is possible!

Ischia Island

The island’s thermal waters have been used for centuries to alleviate aches and pains and to soothe tense muscles. The island has over 30 luxurious spa resorts to choose from, along with free public hot springs and thermal swimming pools.

This rugged island is also famed for its vineyards. In fact, one of the best things to do in Ischia is go on a wine-tasting tour . You’ll get to sample four local wines, from delicious crisp whites that are ideal on warm sunny days, to full-bodied reds which partner well with rich, Italian cuisine.

Ischia vineyards

Alternatively, you can be independent and explore the island at your own pace. At low tide you can walk out to the commanding Aragonese Castle, perched on a tiny rocky islet at the end of a causeway. Follow the tunnel to a lift, and you’ll be transported up to the castle’s ramparts where there’s a two-kilometre walking trail, which will take you around all of the castle’s highlights.

Many have a love / hate relationship with Naples. Personally, I love it for a short time. The city is an exciting mix of Italian elegance and Mediterranean cultures… with the world’s best pizzas thrown in!

visiting Naples from Positano

Naples is rich in history, so I’d recommend visiting at least one museum or art gallery. My favourite is the Archaeological Museum of Naples which has amazing collections of bronzes, frescoes and Egyptian artefacts.

For a really fascinating day trip from Positano, I’d recommend exploring Naples’ extensive underground caverns which date back 2,400 years. They include incredible Roman aqueducts as well as a museum of old cars.

And did I mention pizza? Neopolitan pizza is simply the best! Traditionally, the pizzas from Naples are known for their simplicity. Forget the toppings, a classic Napoli pizza is topped with fresh tomatoes, mozzerella and basil, on a simple, yet flavoursome, wheat dough.

If you’re looking for a really fun activity in Naples, how about trying your hand at making one of these Napolitanen delights? This pizza-making class will turn you into a pizza pro! And yes, you get to eat what you create! What could be better?

Explore the Amalfi Coast

One of my favourite day trips from Positano is to explore the pretty villages and coastal paths of the Amalfi Coast. You can begin your adventure in Atrani, just a short walk (or catch a local bus) up the coast from Positano. The narrow lanes of the village are full of cute little cafes and shops and most of them lead down to a tiny shingle beach.

Atrani

From the old-world charm of Atrani, you carry on to Cetara. The air of this authentic fishing village is full of the scent of anchovies and the sharp tang of lemons. With a foodie reputation, it’s a great spot to stop for lunch.

Cetara

Further up the coast is Erchie, another secluded village with a little pebbly beach and a colourful collection of fishing boats. You can while away the afternoon here getting to know the locals over coffee and limoncello before making your way back to Positano.

Some of the Amalfi Coast is busy with tourists, but if you visit some of these smaller villages, you’ll get a real flavour of authentic Italian life..

With so many day trips from Positano to choose from, you might have trouble deciding how to spend your time. The solution is easy though… just stay a little longer in this magical part of Italy and embrace the leisurely pace of life on the Amalfi Coast. After all, just like fine wine, limoncello and superb pizza, some places are meant to be savoured, not rushed.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about these fun days out from Positano. If you’re looking for more tips for your time in Italy, have a read of these posts…

A Positano to Capri Day Trip | One Day Capri Itinerary

When it comes to putting together an Amalfi Coast itinerary, adding on a Positano to Capri day trip should be towards the top of the list.

Capri is a small, beautiful island right off the coast of Italy. It is easily accessible from the towns of the Amalfi coast and you could even get there by boat from Naples.

It is a popular day trip destination for those who are staying on the mainland, however it could also be a great idea to stay on the island itself.

This guide however, will go over the logistics to get there and what to do as part of a one day Capri itinerary from Positano. It is sure to be a day full of fun activities and you will have an incredible time enjoying this one of a kind island.

1) Introduction to Capri

A day trip to Capri is a must do when visiting the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Located less than an hour by ferry from many of the coast’s main towns, Capri is one of the more popular day trips out there to take part of.

The island is full of viewpoints, gardens, small towns, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water.

If visiting the island during the peak summer months, be aware that you will see the crowds during the day since a Capri day trip is on many people’s bucket lists.

Even with the crowds though, I would highly recommend spending at least a day on the island. If you want to have a bit more peace and quiet on Capri earlier and later on in the day, then an overnight could be for you too.

With that said though, this guide will focus in on a Capri day trip from Positano and how to go about enjoying a fun filled day there.

The island itself is not too large and a single day there can get you all around. Be prepared though for an early wakeup as you will want as much time as possible to see what Capri has to offer.

The rest of this guide will go over what to expect during a trip to Capri and help answer any questions along the way.

2) How to Get to Capri

There are a few main ways to get to Capri from Positano depending on your budget & overall preference.

This route can be done on your own utilizing the ferry network, or you can opt to take a group tour / private boat from Positano.

Positano to Capri Ferry

I will start with talking about the main “do it yourself” option of utilizing the ferry to get yourself between Positano and Capri.

If you want to do the day trip on a budget and have the freedom to explore Capri independently, then this will be for you.

Positano to Capri Ferry Schedule

When it comes to the ferry schedule, you will find different schedules throughout the year. Most ferries start operating in April and stop running at the end of October.

The closer you are to those peaks summer months, the more ferry options you will find running throughout the day.

If you happen to be visiting between November and March, you will not be able to visit directly from Positano. Instead, you will need to travel to Sorrento, where you can catch a ferry from there.

Feel free to check out the ferry schedules for the particular dates you are thinking of taking the day trip. I would recommend booking ahead of time, especially during peak season.

There are multiple ferry and hydrofoil companies that run the routes between the mainland and Capri. Some of these are faster than others, and you will be able to see the options when going about a booking.

Positano to Capri Boat Times

As mentioned, boat schedules can change throughout the year. The closer you are to those summer months, the more ferries you will find going back and forth.

Below you can find an example schedule of the Positano to Capri boat times during the summer:

  • Morning : 8:50AM, 9:15AM, 10:00AM, 10:25AM, 10:55AM
  • Afternoon : 2:00PM, 4:40PM, 6:10PM

Since you will be taking a day trip from Positano to Capri, I would recommend going for one of the first ferries of the day.

On the way back, you can choose from ferries that depart between 5:00PM – 7:00PM to Positano.

How Long is the Boat Ride from Positano to Capri

For the most part, you can expect the Positano to Capri boat time to be around 30 minutes for the one way trip.

However, there are some companies that run slower ferries (around 45 – 60 minutes).

As you go about your booking, you can pick the boats that work best for you.

Positano to Capri Ferry Cost

All of the ferry companies offer very similar pricing to one another. You can expect a one way ferry ride to be around 20-25 Euro (round trip 40-50 Euro).

Other Ferry Options

As mentioned before, you can get to Capri from a variety of cities throughout the Amalfi coast (not just Positano).

Here are a few main places you might be coming from along with approximate ferry lengths and one way prices:

  • Amalfi : 50 minutes / ~23 Euro
  • Sorrento : 20 minutes / ~20 Euro
  • Naples : 60 minutes / ~22 Euro
  • Salerno : 120 minutes / ~25 Euro

Positano to Capri Ferry

3) Positano to Capri Day Trip Tour Options

While taking the ferry will be the perfect combination between price & freedom, there are some other ways to go about a Positano to Capri day trip.

Instead of taking a ferry back and forth to Capri, you can also opt for some small group or private boat tours that offer trips from the Amalfi Coast to Capri. Below are some highly rated options to choose from:

  • From Positano: Sorrento Coast & Capri Full-Day Trip by Boat
  • From Positano: Full-Day Boat Trip to Capri

The great thing about many of these tours, is that you will get a more wholistic day trip that combines water activities with the island itself.

Each one is a bit different from the next, but in general you can expect both some water excursions around Capri, in addition to free time on the island itself.

Private Tour

If you want some more privacy altogether, you can also opt for a private tour. You may also have more of an ability to pick & choose what types of activities you do along the way. See below for a highly rated private option:

  • From Positano: Private Boat Tour to Capri or Amalfi

Note : you can also simply hire a private boat to take you to Capri, without a full guided tour

4) Capri Day Trip Attractions & Map

In the following section, I will be walking through what a day trip to Capri from Positano looks like. To better familiarize yourself with the attractions & layout of the island, feel free to check out the map below.

The map of Capri is pinned with the destinations you could visit during your day here including:

  • Capri Town / Piazzetta
  • Augustus Gardens / Faraglioni Rocks
  • Villa San Michele
  • Mount Solaro

When getting yourself between these attractions, you will be using a variety of transportation options including ferry, bus, funicular, chairlift and plenty of walking.

Highlighted in yellow is the funicular to take you from the ferry into town. In red is the bus to take you from Capri town to Anacapri, and in purple is the chairlift up to Mount Solaro.

5) A One Day Capri Itinerary

Below you will find the Capri attractions listed out along with some short descriptions and images for each.

I will also touch on the different transportation options to utilize during your time on the island, getting from one attraction to the next.

A) Capri Town / Piazzetta

Once you arrive in Capri you can walk, cab or funicular up to the Capri Town .

The funicular is the probably the best option here as it is quick, cheap and convenient (runs every 15 minutes / 2 Euro).

Once up top in the town of Capri you can spend some time exploring the streets, plazas, restaurants and stores. You will be sure to pass by the Piazzetta or Piazza Umberto I , one of the better-known piazzas in Italy.

Piazza Capri

B) Augustus Gardens / Faraglioni Rocks

After you had enough time wandering around town and getting a feel for Capri it is time to head to a few noteworthy attractions.

First up are the Augustus Gardens . Here you will be able to walk through a garden filled with a variety of different plants and flowers, as well as take in some spectacular water views of the Faraglioni Rocks out in the distance.

It really is just a beautiful place to relax and enjoy. You can also see Via Krupp down below, a winding pathway down the mountain.

Although the road is closed for safety reasons, it still makes for one great picture.

Capri Cover

C) Villa San Michele

After grabbing some lunch around the area you can then begin to make your way to Anacapri, which is a bit west of the Capri town.

To get there is pretty simple – you can either hop on a bus from near the Piazzetta or grab a taxi. It should only take about 15 minutes to make the drive.

The first thing you will do when you get to Anacapri is walk to Villa San Michele . Once the home to Swedish physician Axel Munthe, it is now open to the public to explore.

You can spend time roaming around the estate, which includes the main villa, gardens, terraces, artwork and some more great views.  It will cost 10 Euro to enter San Michele and it is definitely worth the fee.

D) Mount Solaro

  • Cost : 14 Euro (round trip) / 11 Euro (one way)
  • Length : 13 minutes
  • Hours : 9:30AM – 5:30PM (May to October); March to April closes at 4:30PM, November to February closes at 3:30PM

Next up will be a pretty unique experience as you head up to Mount Solaro, the highest point in Capri .

To get there you will have to take a single person chairlift up to the top. If you are afraid of heights this might not be for you, but you still should definitely go!

The views from the chairlift are great but the view from up top is even better as you will get to see panoramic views of the entire island.

Mount Solaro stands at 589 meters / 1,932 feet, and offers the perfect vantage point to take in all of your surroundings. Feel free to spend some time exploring the are and just relaxing up top, before finishing up with your day.

After you have had enough time on Mount Solaro, make your way back down the chairlift to Anacapri.

You can then hop back on a bus that will take you to the port area in order to catch your boat back to Positano.

6) Capri Boat Tour Option

One experience that many people like to take part of in Capri is a boat tour around the island, which can include the Blue Grotto as well.

If you want to include this in your itinerary, do so right when you arrive in Capri as that is where many of the boats will depart from.

You will also want to do it as early as possible to avoid the influx of tourist boats at the Blue Grotto if that is part of the itinerary.

The tours below leave from Marina Grande on Capri, while the tours mentioned earlier on in the guide leave from Positano.

Below is a great option to choose from if you are looking to explore the waters of Capri:

  • Capri: Island Boat Trip and Blue Grotto Visit

Blue Grotto Recap

The reason why I did not include the Blue Grotto from the start is because this is one place that can get very crowded and take up valuable time exploring Capri.

If you get there early enough you have the chance to avoid the crowds. If not, there is a chance you will need to wait up to an hour outside of the Blue Grotto entrance.

Once your turn is up though, you will hop into a smaller boat that can fit up to 4 people. These smaller boats will then take you to a ticket booth, where you will pay an additional 14 Euro to enter.

From there, your boat driver will take you into the Blue Grotto itself. Get ready to lay very low in the boat, as your captain guides you further into the grotto.

Soon enough you will be welcomed to sparkling blue water, where you will spend the next 10 minutes or so. It is important to note that the water really only has that vibrant blue color if the sun is out. If it is very overcast, you may not experience the same type of blue grotto that you may see in photos.

After enjoying the grotto, you will head back to the sea, where you will get back onto your boat and towards Marina Grande. From there, you can begin your day trip on Capri.

Note : it is possible to save some time and take a bus from the Blue Grotto to Anacapri and do the above itinerary in the opposite direction. You do not necessarily need to take the boat back to Marina Grande.

You can either wait for the bus or hop in a taxi, before driving off to Anacapri and heading up Mount Solaro.

7) Where to Stay in Positano

Since you will be taking part of a Positano to Capri day trip, you will need to choose somewhere to stay in Positano. There are various hotels to choose from all alongside the beautiful town center.

Below are just a few of the highly rated options to consider during your time there:

  • Hotel Eden Roc Suites
  • Hotel Marincanto
  • Villa la Tartana
  • Hotel Reginella
  • Covo Dei Saraceni

Positano Hotels

That about wraps up the guide to a one day Capri itinerary. Take a look at the other Italy itineraries and guides to help out with any other trip planning.

Be sure to include this day trip a part of an Italy itinerary:

this sounds beautiful but would like to know if this day trip can be started fromPositano as that is where we are staying and is there an additional fee for the blue grotto boat trip. Also what type of boat would we be on as we have a hard time getting into a boat,is there some sort of walkway, ramp,to board boat and for the blur grotto itinery, would we have to get into a small boat to enter the Grotto. thank You,

Hi Sharon - yes of course this day trip can be started from Positano! That is definitely one of the more popular spots to be based for a day trip. If you would like to do the Blue Grotto there will be an additional fee for that. You can sign up for a tour once you arrive in Capri or plan one ahead of time. Hope that helps!

capri day trip from positano

Capri is likely one of the most visited destinations in Italy, and that is with good reason. This small island on the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrento Peninsula boasts abundant natural beauty, glamour, and history. Planning a Capri day trip from the Amalfi Coast or southern Italy is a great addition to any itinerary as there is so much to do, see, and eat on the island.

Table of Contents

Getting to Capri

Whether you are coming from Naples, Sorrento or Positano and whether you want to travel independently or via organised tour, there are several ways to reach Capri from the Italian mainland.

Naples to Capri

If you want to get to Capri from Naples, these are the best options available to you!

By Organised Tour

Maybe you’re only staying in Naples during your time in the region and would love to visit Capri . If this is the case, perhaps an organised group day tour would be best for you.

With this full-day tour , you will be picked up and dropped off from your accommodation, then sail to the island of Capri on a hydrofoil.

The tour will then include time with a professional guide on the main Marina Grande, a short bus ride to Anacapri to see the more rural side of the island, and then a journey back to the center of the island to enjoy a local lunch.

This tour is great if you’re looking to see the island on more of an off-the-beaten-path route rather than in tourist hubs.

Beautiful Capri Island

If you’re looking to spend your day trip to Capri from Naples mainly at sea, this full-day tour is a great option.

You’ll take in the Gulf of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius from the sea and spend time swimming close to the famous Faraglioni Rocks. You’ll also pass through the sparkling White and Green Grottos. This is a great option for those keen for a boat tour around the island.

Afterwards, spend a few hours exploring the island in whichever way you’d like before returning to Naples in the late afternoon.

You can also opt for this private tour that leaves from Naples or Sorrento or this private day tour that leaves from Naples along with Positano and Sorrento.

If heading to Capri independently is what you prefer, then one of the most important things you’ll need to plan is how you will reach the island.

Naples has two ports with ferries heading to Capri and the one you take will depends on the ferry. Calata di Massa is for slow and regular ferries and Molo Beverello services high-speed ferries.

There is only about a 20-minute difference between the high-speed and slow ferries, with the high-speed taking around 40 minutes, and the slow ferries taking a little over an hour to Capri.

Ticket costs vary depending on the boat that you take and your point of departure. The Naples to Capri ferries run between every half hour and every hour also depending on the boat you take. You can  view ferry schedules here .

Naples at sunset

Sorrento to Capri

If you’re based in Sorrento , then follow these options in order to reach the island!

There are great options for Capri tours with a guide if you prefer to not visit independently.

This boat tour of Capri is a full-day experience with different options depending on how you prefer to see the island of Capri.

With hotel pick-up options available, you’ll head directly to the famous blue grotto to experience its intensely blue waters and then spend time at two spots in nearby water to snorkel and swim.

A traditional Caprese salad or sandwich lunch is also included as well as 4 hours to then spend independently on the island as you wish.

Another option is this full-day tour from Sorrento, which includes accommodation pick up and drop off. On departure, you’ll take a boat ride past the rugged Sorrentinian peninsula, the Villa Pollio Felix, (the most important Roman archaeological site in Sorrento), and then past Massa Lubrense.

Once arriving you have the option of taking part in a tour of the island at an additional cost or exploring on your own. After the visit to Capri, there is then a one-hour tour around the island with an expert acquainting you and informing you on the area before heading back to Sorrento.

If you’d prefer to go independently, you can take the ferry to Capri. It only takes about 20-30 minutes to get from Sorrento to Capri but tickets cost a bit higher than from Naples depending on the boat that you take.

Ferries depart just about every 15 minutes and leave from the port of Marina Piccola which is close to the town center of Sorrento.

If you’re looking to save some money on your trip but have your eye set on Capri, consider going from Naples rather than from Sorrento. You can  view ferry schedules here . Note that you can also visit Capri as a day trip from nearby Salerno if you happen to be based there.

Town of Sorrento

Positano to Capri

If you’re using Positano as a base on the Amalfi Coast and are looking to get to Capri from there, there are a few options open to you depending on what you are after.

For those staying in Positano during your Amalfi Coast trip , this full-day tour is a great way to experience the island of Capri. The tour is around 8 hours and begins by meeting at the departure point in Positano before being whisked away from the Amalfi Coast by a traditional Caprese “gozzo” boat.

After your time at sea, you’ll arrive on the island with about 4 hours of free time to explore the island as you wish. This is the perfect time to check out the less-visited Anacapri before heading back to the boat to make your way back to Positano.

If a more in-depth tour by boat to Capri from Positano is what you’re interested in, this full-day tour is perfect. After meeting at the pick-up point, you will be transferred by minibus to the port of Piano di Sorrento to depart by boat.

Drinks and snacks are also served on board. After 3-5 hours on the island as you wish, you’ll sail back to Sorrento to enjoy local Sorrentinian Limoncello to wrap up the day.

If you opt for your Capri day trip from Positano to be spent independently, you must be aware of the ferry schedules and locations. It is also important to know that the route from Positano is seasonal and only available from April until the end of October.

During that time, ferries depart every half an hour in each direction and take around half an hour.

The departure point for ferries from Positano is at the Spiaggia Grande beach, so keep this in mind if you plan on taking luggage to Capri as there are many flights of stairs down to reach the ferry pier. You can  view ferry schedules here .

Beautiful Positano

Capri Day Trip Itinerary

Although it’s a stunning island with so much to offer, there is plenty that can be done in just a day and you won’t be left without much missed.

From the lush landscapes, the fresh Caprese meals, and the pristine waters, your time on Capri won’t disappoint you no matter how you choose to spend it.

The Blue Grotto

Ah, the Blue Grotto. There are few places (if any) more familiar and recognizable than this beautifully aquamarine place. Although it is the most visited destination on the island, it’s a must-visit destination and of of the best things to do in Capri.

There are many blue grottoes in different locations in the world, but Capri’s “Grotta Azzura” is certainly the most famous.

Due to scientific phenomenon and thanks to a large hole in the rock beneath the water’s surface, the red light gets filtered out of the cave and results in the beautiful blue color of the grotto.

Queues are quite long since you will need to join a tour boat once arriving at the Marina Grande to visit the Blue Grotto. Because of this, it’s recommended to arrive early in the morning or book with a private company in advance to avoid long queues.

The entry to get into the cave is quite small so be prepared to lay down on the boat to get inside! Also, be prepared for joyous singing boat skippers once you reach inside the grotto. Regardless of how you get there, a day on Capri is not complete without visiting the Blue Grotto!

Blue Grotto in Capri

If a one-day Capri itinerary for you sounds much better spent away from the glam of the center of the island. To get away from the hefty tourist crowds, make your way to the other side of the island, Anacapri.

Anacapri can easily be reached by public bus departing from the Capri town terminal located in Piazza Martiri d’Ungheria. Busses run every 15-20 minutes in the peak season, cost 2 euros each way, and take about 20 minutes.

A great way to see the island from above is from the highest point on the island, Monte Solaro. Monte Solaro can be reached by funicular.

The chairlift up takes about 12 minutes and offers the most spectacular views of Capri and the surrounding area. This includes the historic center of the town and the trees right below your feet.

Afterwards, spend some time wandering the alleys of the historic center and wrap up your time by grabbing lunch at the wonderful restaurant, L’Angelo del Gusto .

The Bay of Anacapri

Marina Piccola

The beautiful bay known as the famous spot where Ulysses (Odysseus) was supposedly seduced by the music of the sirens, is Marina Piccola. If you’re looking for a great beach spot by the Faraglioni Rocks, Marina Piccola is the perfect location to catch some sea and sun.

Marina Piccola is one of the sunniest spots on the isle of Capri and is the perfect place to grab a glass of wine and watch the world go by.

It is located on the southern end of the island and can be reached by bus from the town Piazzetta or also by a 15-minute walk. If you’re going to Marina Piccola on foot, take Via Roma to Due Golfi, then take the stairs down Via Mulo for a lovely walk to the Marina.

Villas in Marina Piccola

Have more time?

If you have more time in Capri and will be staying longer than a day, there is still a plethora of things to do to spend your time on the island.

One of the best places to pass the time people watch on the island of Capri is at the main Piazza, Piazza Umberto I. Grab a drink or dinner and spend time watching the world go by in the center of the town full of all walks of life. Who knows who you may see pass you?

For more of a unique visit, head to the Punta Carena lighthouse on the southern end of the isalnd. The wonderous Punta Carena lighthouse towers at the tip of the island and is the second tallest in Italy. It is also among the most important of all those guarding the Tyrrhenian Sea.

There is also a beach in the area if you’d like to go for a swim, as well as cafes and restaurants. You can also visit the nearby Villa San Michele to see some unique artwork and gardens.

Looking for a true souvenir to bring home? Capri is known for their custom handmade Sandals . Supposedly Jackie Kennedy is who made these famous and brought their popularity to the rest of the world.

There are various sandal makers throughout the island but the most well-known is Canfora. Head to the shop to have your Caprese sandals made for you to bring home as the perfect souvenir.

Where to Stay in Capri

To Be Capri – Well located in the town of Capri, this is a good mid-range choice. This hotel has simple double rooms and family rooms to choose from and some even include a kitchenette.

Villa Calypso – The lovely hotel within easy walking distance of the main square in Capri Town, there are a range of luxe and spacious rooms, views of the Mediterranean Sea and an excellent breakfast served daily.

Villa Castello Apartments – If you’re looking for a self-catering option (or simply want to imagine what it would be like to live on the island!), then these flats are a wonderful choice. Situated in Capri Town, there are several apartments available ranging in size.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Capri hotels!

Faraglioni Rocks in Capri

No matter if you’re doing a Capri day trip from Naples, Positano or Sorrento, the island is truly one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean that will leave you in awe. There’s a reason why it is one of the most visited destinations in Italy and a Capri itinerary should certainly be a part of your trip to the Amalfi Coast.

Capri Day Trip from Positano

Last Updated on January 8, 2024 by Tori Pines

If you’re visiting the magical country of Italy any time soon, a day trip to from Positano to Capri is an absolute must. My personal suggestion is to stay in Positano, on the Amalfi Coast and then take a Capri day trip from Positano. But, as long as you are spending time in Rome or anywhere further south, taking a Capri day trip is easy to manage!

Another option is to stay a few nights on the island instead. There are tons of great places to stay on Capri! This way you could experience the island early in the mornings and again each evening without all of the tourists. The island calms down greatly during these times and you get to wander the quiet streets and explore the beauty all to yourself.

However, staying a few nights on the island typically means you have to have a lot of time in Italy. Especially if it is your first trip to Italy, you will likely want to see a lot, and not have a ton of time in one place.  This is exactly why I recommend that you make Positano your base and then explore from there. You’ll want to include the Capri day trip from Positano as the priority while you are planning your time here.

As you plan your trip to Italy, be sure to check out the rest of my Italy blogs to help you plan the perfect vacation! You’ll need to review my ultimate packing guide for Italy before you leave for your trip!

Table of Contents

Why take a capri day trip from positano, when to take a capri day trip from positano, small group tour, private boat, ride the ferry, marina grande, capri town: shopping, gardini di augusto, what to wear to capri, should you stay longer on capri.

Oh man, where do I even start? Capri is a small island made up of two little towns, Capri and Anacapri. For hundreds of years, this island has been the destination for travelers who want a luxury getaway. Back in the day, many rulers would stay here and enjoy the beauty of the island.

In the 1950s Capri became a popular modern tourist destination. Many Italians would visit and eventually it grew to being popular with visitors from all over the world. The Capri style pants are named after the island along with the Caprese salad that was said to have been invented here at Hotel Quisisana. And then there’s the famous Jackie O who loved spending time here, and is known for starting the trend of having handmade leather sandals made to fit your feet at one of the many shops on the island.

All that to say, this is kinda THE place to see in Italy. It’s located just off the coast of the Amalfi Coast, near Naples, in southern Italy. The island experiences beautiful weather during the summer months, and has some amazing beach clubs for you to relax at all day. I, of course, prefer to explore the island; there is so much to do and see, and so much delicious food to try.

Positano to Capri Boat Ride with Italian flag.

Taking a Capri day trip from Positano is really only possible during “the season”. The Amalfi Coast and Capri close down during the winter, so most shops and restaurants will be closed. But they also don’t run many tours and the ferries take little to no trips during this season.

That being said, their open season is April 15th through the end of October.  Any time within those dates is a good time to visit, but the best time is in September. The summer crowds have died town as kids go back to school and parents to work. Plus, the weather is still warm so you can enjoy the island’s sunny days.

capri day trip from positano

However, the real kicker here is that the water has had all summer to warm up, so you’ll also get to enjoy lots of time swimming in the sea. If you visit in May, then you’ll get the lower crowds and warm days, but not warm water. So, try to visit in September if you can!

But, if you have to visit in the summer when the crowds are insane, that’s okay!! People talk so much smack about tourists who visit in the summer. While the crowds are definitely not ideal, a trip to Italy in July is much better than no trip to Italy at all. Go, but be mentally prepared that it will be busy, and then don’t let it bother you!

Boat from Positano to Capri

Getting from Positano to Capri

You have three options to get to Capri for a day trip from Positano. My personal recommendation is to take a small group tour for the day. You’ll spend about 8 hours total, leaving around 9am and returning around 5pm. This is the Capri boat tour we picked and it was amazing! They even served us prosecco and beer! Our tour was about $130 per person, and most tours are around that price for an 8-hour small group tour taking you from Positano to Capri.

This is also an option if you’re visiting Capri from somewhere else. Spending a few days in Rome ? You can make this a day trip from there!

capri day trip from positano

You’ll check in down at the main marina on the beach in Positano. That’s where the boat will pick you up. You’ll be in a small boat that fits about 15 people with a tour guide who will take you to the island. Once you’re there, most tours will do a circle around the island first, showing you the famous spots like the faraglioni rocks and the different grottos. Many guides will teach you about the island and the history of each place.

Once you finish the tour, you’ll pull into Marina Grande, where you’ll get off for about 4 hours, spend time on the island and then meet back here once the time is up. You’ll ride back along the Amalfi Coast and be dropped back off at the marina in Positano after the most perfect day.

Tori Pines Travels and Austin on the boat ride from Positano to Capri.

The next option for a Capri day trip from Positano is to rent a private boat for the day from Positano to Capri. This will cost quite a bit more money, and is at minimum $600 for 8 hours. However, if you have 5 or more people, it might actually work out to be more cost efficient.

This is sure to be a more luxurious experience and extremely customizable, as you will have much more control over how you spend the day.  Once the skipper picks you up you can decide where to go and how long to stay on the island.

capri day trip from positano

The third option for your Capri day trip from Positano is to take the ferry. At first glance, this might seem like the more cost effective and flexible option for you. But I urge you to read more about why this might not be the best option.

The ferry ride is about $24 per person per way. That means about $50 per person round trip. This will only get you to and from the island, so if you want to take a tour around it, then you’ll likely have to pay another $50 per person for that. (Unless you want to be on a huge boat squished in with all the tourists for $20) So, yes it will end up being a little cheaper, but will take much longer.

capri day trip from positano

The ferry ride is 40 minutes, but including boarding and deboarding will take well over an hour each way. Then, finding a tour of the island and getting on that boat will add another 30 minutes minimum. The point is, it takes a lot more time and is a much bigger headache.

Now, the big exception to this is if you get seasick.  The waves can be pretty choppy around the island and the smaller boats rock…hard. So, if you get seasick then you definitely will want to take the ferry from Positano to Capri and will not want to do a boat tour around the island. Don’t worry, there’s still soooo much to see and do on the island.

Arriving on Capri day trip from Positano.

What to Do on the Island of Capri

Now that you know how to get to your Capri day trip from Positano, you’ll have to plan out what to do on the island. There are so many amazing things to see that you won’t be able to do it all in just one day trip. But…that just means you have to go back, right?

Lookout from Capri town.

For now, I’ll give you the short list of things to do on your Capri day trip from Positano.

Start at the Marina Grande, where you’ll be dropped off. Check out the free beach here if you want to dip your toes in the sand. You could rent chairs at a beach club, but with such little time on the island, why sit around and waste those precious minutes?

Explore the touristy shops for a little while and grab a lemon granita. It’s especially delicious on a hot day. Once you’re done with the crowds, hop on the funicular and ride it up to Capri town. If you don’t want to spend a few bucks, don’t want to be in the crowds of tourists, or just want to get a little exercise in, you can walk up to town instead.

Beach at Marina Grande on Capri Day trip from Positano.

Believe it or not, that’s what we chose to do. In our defense we were there during COVID times when you had to test negative to get back into the states and, well, we were taking our test the next day so we wanted to be a little extra careful.

The walk isn’t that bad and you get to see what life is like for the locals as you pass by all of their cute little homes perched on the hill.

capri day trip from positano

At the top, you’ll find the town of Capri, also packed with tourists, but not loaded with cheesy little shops. Instead you’ll find a square lined with cafes and restaurants and a beautiful church.  Walk down any of the cobblestone pathways in any direction to find rows of high end stores, made for the rich visitors Capri welcomes every day. They’re fun to window shop, and maybe splurge for an item or two. I mean come on, you are in Capri after all!

capri day trip from positano

Whatever you do, you must stop at a sandal shop and have a pair made to fit your foot. You’ll get to pick out the exact design and colors you want and then they will build the sandal onto your foot. This ensures perfect sizing and no need to break them in, as they were literally made for you!

I had mine made at A Mano Capri Sandals, and they were exceptional. The ladies there were so kind, patient and helpful and they made two pairs in 30 minutes! It was incredible! The work is beautiful and super high quality. I will treasure them forever.

capri day trip from positano

Depending on how long you like to shop, you might want to instead visit the Gardini di Augusto. Just a short walk from town, this site will cost less than $2 to enter. You can buy tickets when you arrive and then wander the well-manicured grounds. The best part of the gardens are the views from the terraces.

Head to the back and you’ll find the famous view of the Faraglioni rocks AND the via Krupp.  You may have never heard of the famous road but I would bet you’ve seen photos. The hairpin turning road that leads down to the sea is closed for safety, but the view from the gardens is pretty neat.

If you have even more time, visit the other town on the island, Anacapri. From there you can take a chairlift to the highest point on the island. You’ll also want to enjoy this smaller and less touristy town for a more local and relaxed experience.

What to eat on your capri day trip from positano.

The food on Capri is delicious like the rest of Italy, but there are a few select items that you will definitely want to try while you are here.

First and foremost, you need to try the lemons. Capri is known for its lemon production for a reason. They grow a lot of them, and they are gigantic! One variety of lemon that they grow is huge, and can be as big as your head! However, they grow many normal-sized lemons here too, but the flavor is anything but normal.

There is just something special about the lemons here, so you have to try them in as many ways as possible. Try the lemon granita, a frozen treat. Or, go for lemon pasta dishes, like the lemon ravioli. And of course, you must have the famous limoncello, a liquor they make here that is to die for.

The other must-eat on the island is the Caprese salad, which is of course named after the island. It was said to have been invented here at the Hotel Quisisana in the early 1920s.  The hotel is still open, so you can try it there or at practically any other restaurant in town.

Where to Eat on Capri

There’s many great places to eat on the island during you day trip from Positano to Capri, but one place should ring in at the top of your priority list. Da Paolino is a restaurant located inside a lemon grove on the island. You’ll eat under a canopy of lemon trees that literally creates a roof over your head. The lemons hang from above and make for the most beautiful, unique and romantic spot you could imagine.

This restaurant is extremely popular and requires a reservation. However, you have to reach out very, very far in advance to get on the list. I’m talking several months out. So, stop what you’re doing and make your reservation now! I mean it!

Tomato and arugula salad at da paolino.

Okay, did you make the reservation? Great, now the food.

Of course the ambiance is the reason you’re visiting, but the food will make you want to return. The fresh pasta dishes are homemade and they use their lemons in many of the dishes.

We actually loved the arugula salad the most while we were here; the ingredients were incredibly fresh and the salad was huge. After 10 days of straight pizza and pasta, this salad was exactly what we needed.

For a simple and quick lunch, visit Salumeria Da Aldo for freshly made sandwiches. Bonus points if you get the Caprese sandwich, you are on Capri after all!

Some other great spots on the island include La Capannina, Lo Sfizio and Pescheria Le Botteghe .

capri day trip from positano

Deciding what to wear in Italy in general is important, but there’s something even more special about the perfect sundress for Capri. And yes, to start I would suggest a sundress. It will likely be sunny and warm when you are visiting, so a sundress will be flowy and feel good in the heat. Here are some of my favorite sundresses.

Just know that Capri is a place where many wealthy and rich people visit. So, have fun dressing the part! Wear something stylish and fun.

The best tip I can give is to wear yellow. You’re bound to see lemons everywhere. Either lemons on a cart, lemon trees, or lemon desserts. You’ll compliment all of the lemons beautifully with a bright yellow dress. Just look at how perfect the yellow looks at Da Paolino. Buy a dress similar to mine!

Make sure to review my packing list for Italy so that you don’t forget any of the most important items you’ll need tor bring!

capri day trip from positano

A Capri day trip from Positano is fun. Don’t get me wrong, but more time on the island is definitely ideal!

If this is your first time to the area, and you only have a few days, then staying in Positano and taking a Capri day trip is the ideal option. You can experience both destinations in a short amount of time.

capri day trip from positano

However, if you have 5 or more days then I highly recommend you stay a few nights in Positano and a few nights in Capri. Yes, that means more packing and unpacking, but it will be worth it for all of the extra time you will have to explore the island. Plus, at night most of the tourists leave and you can have the place (more) to yourself.

Or, if you have been to Positano before, then you might want to only stay in Capri this trip! You can take the time to visit Anacapri, ride a vespa around the island and stroll through all of the beautiful gardens the island has to offer. Pick a cute boutique hotel and relax in style for a few days.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure to visit this perfect little island and fall in love one lemon at a time.

Thank you!! I do have a lot of fun! I do not get anything free (except I got one tour free once, lol) and I have not made any money off of ads. Maybe one day! I have made a teeny tiny bit of money from affiliates, but we are talking like $10 per month. Very minimal. For now just doing this because it is what I love, and my passion project!

Welcome to Positano, Italy

Positano, nestled on the southern coast of Italy, emerges as a prime launching pad for incredible day trips. This picturesque town, with its stunning views and vibrant streets, offers more than meets the eye. It acts as a gateway to the Amalfi Coast, inviting you to set out from its colorful buildings into the broader marvels of Southern Italy.

Travelers love how Positano serves as the perfect base, providing easy access to the enchanting island of Capri, the ancient ruins of Pompeii, and the breathtaking trails of Mount Vesuvius. Each destination promised an unforgettable journey, making Positano not just a stop but a significant part of their exploration. Seize the moment to venture beyond the usual, allowing the town’s charm to guide you through some of the most beautiful places on earth.

Why Positano is the Perfect Base for Day Trips

Positano, nestled on the stunning Amalfi Coast, serves as the ultimate launchpad for adventurers seeking to unveil the treasures of Southern Italy. Its central position guarantees effortless trips to enchanting destinations like Capri, Sorrento, and the ancient ruins nestled beneath Mount Vesuvius. This picturesque town not only promises awe-inspiring views but also ensures the easiest way for you to experience the dolce vita Italy is famed for.

Whether by private car, boat trip, or even a leisurely walk, discovering breathtaking locales has never been simpler. Travelers have the luxury of soaking in spectacular views one moment and wandering through the historical piazzas of a coastal town the next. For those intrigued by the allure of the Mediterranean, Positano is your gateway to exploring southern Italy’s most beautiful places, all within a day’s journey.

Exploring Capri: One of the Must-Do Day Trips from Positano Italy

A capri day trip stands as the pinnacle of Southern Italy’s allure. Venturing out on a private boat tour grants you not only the freedom to explore at your own pace but also a unique vantage point of the Tyrrhenian Sea’s stunning vistas. The journey to the island itself reveals the best views, with the famous Blue Grotto being a highlight not to miss. Access to this natural wonder is easiest by sea, making a boat trip the best way to immerse in Capri’s beauty.

The high season brings in summer crowds, thus timing your visit proves crucial. Opting for an early morning excursion helps you avoid the bulk of visitors, ensuring a more relaxed atmosphere as you navigate around the island. Plus, the incredible view you’ll encounter at the island’s highest point is best savored without the throngs of tourists that gather during peak hours.

Capri Boat Tour Tips

Booking a private boat tour to Capri is the easiest way to ensure an unforgettable experience. You will skirt the stunning coast line, catching the best views of the Tyrrhenian Sea from the island’s highest point. Opting for a private excursion allows for a customized itinerary, a relaxed atmosphere away from the summer crowds, and even a chance to swim in secluded spots. A private car might get you close, but nothing compares to the access and perspectives a boat offers.

Remember, high season sees a surge in demand for these types of excursions. Booking early is not just recommended; it’s essential. Lastly, consider the duration of your trip. A single day might be tempting, but a three-day itinerary allows for deeper exploration. The coast of Italy is littered with natural wonders; don’t rush the exploration.

Venturing to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii

Venturing south for one of your day trips from Positano Italy, a unique experience awaits. The ancient ruins of Pompeii, forever etched in history by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius , call for exploration. This journey combines awe with education, offering insights into a world preserved for millennia. A guided tour of Vesuvius provides not just a walk but an adventure across time. Here, the ground whispers tales of Pompeii’s last day.

Choosing the best option for this expedition often involves a combined day trip. Such excursions, carefully crafted, ensure that visitors witness the spectacular views from Vesuvius’ summit and then delve into Pompeii’s unearthed secrets. Booking line tickets in advance during the high season is a smart move. It dodges the summer crowds, making the visit more intimate. The expertise of a local guide enhances this immersive encounter, revealing the nuances of ancient lives and the power of a volcano.

Pompeii Tour Recommendations

Discovering the ancient ruins of Pompeii offers an intriguing peek into the past. You might find yourself torn between the privacy of a private car and the camaraderie of a small group tour. Each option promises a unique experience. A private tour allows for a tailored adventure, designed just for you. In contrast, small group tours provide a social dimension, sharing awe and insights with fellow travelers.

Again, high season will bring in a lot of visitors, transforming Pompeii into a very popular destination. To secure your spot without the wait, booking skip the line tickets in advance becomes imperative. This preparation makes the difference between an extended wait under the summer sun and a smooth entry. Remember, Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting thousands. Your foresight in booking early ensures an uninterrupted journey through one of Italy’s most fascinating historical landmarks.

Sorrento: Gateway to the Sorrento Coast

A day trip to Sorrento unfolds as the perfect gateway to the enchanting Sorrento Coast. This picturesque town has captivated the hearts of travelers with its stunning views, offering a panorama of the Tyrrhenian Sea that remains unmatched. Sorrento sets itself apart with a relaxed atmosphere, where the pace of life seems to slow down, inviting you to pretend to be a local while you visit.

At every turn, Sorrento offers an array of shopping opportunities, from handmade leather sandals to local specialties that reflect the rich culinary heritage of southern Italy. Dining in Sorrento is an adventure in itself, with venues ranging from the cliffside restaurants offering spectacular views to the warmth of small, family-run trattorias tucked away in the town center.

The town’s beautiful gardens are a testament to the natural wonders surrounding the area; a short walk from the main beach or city center might lead you to lush lemon groves or the tranquil setting of a hidden garden. These serene spots provide a perfect place for reflection or a relaxed afternoon away from the summer crowds.

Getting There: Sorrento Travel Tips

Reaching Sorrento from Positano unveils a trove of picturesque landscapes and an introduction to Southern Italy. You face several options, each offering a unique glimpse of the coast. A popular choice, a private tour bus or van, winds along the coastal road, offering stunning views that capture the essence of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The journey itself becomes a memorable part of your day trip, as the winding roads present breathtaking panoramas.

Alternatively, the sita bus serves as a reliable conduit between these two beautiful towns. This method allows you to immerse yourself in local life, sharing moments with residents and fellow travelers alike. For those seeking a more scenic route, a short boat trip will not disappoint. It affords an unparalleled perspective of the Sorrento coast, with the sea breeze complementing the sun’s warm embrace.

The Amalfi Adventure

Amalfi, nestled on the stunning coast of Italy, beckons travelers with its unmatched charm. The picturesque town serves as a gateway to some of the most beautiful places in Southern Italy. Its central location makes it an ideal spot for a day trip, offering easy access to the breathtaking surroundings.

Strolling along the Marina Grande, you’ll find yourself captivated by the colorful buildings and the relaxed atmosphere that defines this little town. Amalfi’s main beach offers a perfect place for a leisurely day under the sun, surrounded by incredible views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Ways to Enjoy Amalfi

Amalfi beckons with a vibrant tapestry of experiences waiting to be discovered. In this picturesque town, every turn presents an opportunity to immerse yourself in the very essence of the Amalfi coast.

  • Embark on a Lemon Grove Tour : Amalfi is renowned for its lush lemon groves. A stroll through these fragrant fields offers not just a respire from the bustling town center but a chance to taste and learn about the importance of lemons in local cuisine and culture.
  • Enjoy a Leisurely Stroll along Marina Grande: Nothing captures the essence of Amalfi like a walk on Marina Grande. The stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, lined by colorful buildings and bustling with life, provide the perfect backdrop for memorable photos and relaxed moments.

Each of these activities offers a unique way to connect with the heart of Amalfi. They remind us why this small village is listed among the most beautiful places on the coast of Italy.

Making the Most of Your Day Trips from Positano Italy

Maximizing day trip experiences from Positano means having a well-thought-out plan. You will find that planning in advance is not just advisable; it becomes crucial for snagging the best excursions to places like the stunning Amalfi or the picturesque town of Sorrento. Whether you opt for a private car to wind down the coast line or a small group tour to venture through ancient ruins, the key lies in securing your bookings before summer crowds take over.

Considering the season shapes your day’s narrative. Visiting Mount Vesuvius or taking a Capri boat tour during the high season demands early reservations to avoid disappointment. However, the magic of Southern Italy blooms in the quieter months, offering a more relaxed atmosphere and easier access to popular destinations like the famous Blue Grotto or the beautiful island itself. Finally, selecting the right type of excursion, be it a leisurely boat trip around Capri or a detailed tour of Pompeii, can transform a single day into a treasure trove of memories. Here, the choice between guided explorations and private tours emerges as pivotal, setting the stage for an experience tailored precisely to your dreams.

Essential Travel Preparation

Embarking on day trips from Positano Italy grants you the liberty to explore Southern Italy’s most dazzling jewels. Planning in advance is your passport to a hassle-free adventure. A three-day itinerary paves the way to discover the coast of Italy and could be part of a bigger trip exploring more of this incredible country . Every moment planned will unfurl the beautiful canvas of nearby attractions like Amalfi, Capri, and the ancient ruins cradled in this picturesque region.

Among the essential items to pack, never underestimate the sun’s power along the coast. Sun protection cannot be overstated, with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses being indispensable. A day under the Mediterranean sun requires staying hydrated. Keep a bottle of water at your side to quench your thirst during your explorations, ensuring you stay refreshed whether you’re strolling through lemon groves or embarking on a Capri boat tour.

For those drawn to the azure allure of the sea, considering what to pack for a boat trip shapes the day’s enjoyment. Lightweight clothing will keep you at ease under the sun, while soft drinks and snacks can enhance the experience. Remember, a small boat navigating towards the famous Blue Grotto or circling the stunning coastline will have limited amenities. Thus, your preparation can turn a simple outing into an unforgettable journey.

The Amalfi Coast is high up on many people’s summer destination wishlists for good reason. But here’s the thing: If you want to go to the Amalfi Coast for cheap, avoid going during the high season (May 15th to October 10th).

I know, it can be a hard pill to swallow. The weather won’t be as warm and you probably won’t be lounging on the beach. But consider a late October or April trip if you want to enjoy this incredible place on a budget. Besides saving you money, you’ll also get to enjoy your trip without the summer crowds and see what life is like on the Amalfi Coast for locals.

I went to Positano in the last week of March with my family and we stayed at a 4-star hotel  in an amazing room with a balcony and beautiful view for $175/night. The weather was sunny, and even though we sat on the beach in sweaters we weren’t at all cold. There were tons of locals out and we had an amazing time. We had the town to ourselves.

capri day trip from positano

You can get to Sorrento, Positano, and other places along the Amalfi Coast by public transportation. So, unless you’re taking a private car from Rome or Naples, a great way to save on expenses is to take advantage of the local trains and buses. Another option is to tie your transport needs in with the tours you’re taking.

From Rome or Naples, take the slower train for as little as €12, which will get you there in about 2 to 2.5 hours. The fast train normally costs about €50 and takes an hour. Trenitalia and Italo are the two major train providers in Italy.

To get to Sorrento from Naples, hop on the Circumvesuviano , which is a small regional train. This will cost you another €4 per person.

Once you’re in Sorrento, my recommendation is to stay there for one night and one day before heading off to picturesque Positano for another couple of nights. To get to Positano, catch a bus via Sita bus . Buses leave about once an hour and will cost you around €4 to €7 (depending on if you want to take the bus farther than Positano).

By Tour Transport

Another option is to tie transport to your Amalfi Coast accommodation to a tour. If you’re coming from Rome, we can tie your transport to the Amalfi Coast to a day trip to Pompeii and Sorrento from Rome , which costs roughly €170 per person.

The tour stops in Sorrento after Pompeii and some people arrange transport from Sorrento to their Amalfi Coast accommodation. You can organize secondary transport through your accommodation or we’ll arrange it for you—wherever you can find the best price!

This is a great way to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast and skip the line to see Pompeii followed by a lovely afternoon in Sorrento.

When it comes to choosing where to stay on the Amalfi Coast, Positano and Sorrento are popular choices. Positano is the most happening place on the coast with a great beach, and Sorrento, while not officially on the Amalfi coast, is the largest town in the area with Amalfi vibes and accessible by train from Naples.

But for those on a budget, I have another recommendation: Maiori and Minori—two small towns with a local feel, great food, and inexpensive accommodations. Maiori is the Amalfi Coast town for insiders. It’s away from international tourism and close to the best beaches in the area. Here, you’ll pay much less for your accommodation and find great restaurants with seriously authentic food .

Club 2 Torri

Hotel Club 2 Torri

€€ | 4 Star | Maiori

This is my number one pick for Maiori for the price, location, and amenities. Beautiful hotel at a great price with a nice vibe to it. Most rooms come with private balconies for a luxe experience at a great price (especially off season).

Location, photos, and booking

Villa Isabella

Villa Isabella Minori

€ | Guest House | Great Views and Wood Ceilings | Minori

Quaint and economic guest house with characteristic charm and stunning views. You’re just steps from the beach here, and the rooms have wooden beams on the ceiling that make it feel cozy.

Hotel Ravello Art Marmorata

Hotele Marmorata

€€ | 4 Star | Pool Between Maiori and Amalfi

Reasonably priced and nice cliffside hotel with a hydromassage pool. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you could spend your entire day here enjoying sea views that are unforgettable.

When planning your trip, make sure you book ahead. The Amalfi Coast sells out from May 1st through October 10th. So, to avoid disappointment, lock in your accommodation early. We recommend using apps like Booking.com  and others to find accommodation. Trust the reviews about views and proximity to the beach.

As we mentioned earlier, the most budget-friendly time to go is just before and after the high season. But if your heart is set on a summer vacation, here are some minimum prices for the high season:

  • Bed and breakfast: €100/night
  • Cheap hotels: €120/night
  • Decent hotels: €200/night+
  • Nice hotels: €300/night +
  • Best hotels: €700/night+

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation or a bit of adventure, there’s plenty to do on the Amalfi Coast . Here are some budget-friendly ways to enjoy Sorrento and Positano.

In Sorrento:

  • Head to Peter’s Beach to enjoy a small beach and a sunbathing platform for free—perfect for a quick dip!
  • Visit the centrally-located Cathedral of Sorrento free of charge.
  • Stroll down the narrow streets of old Sorrento and admire the colorful buildings and shops. Walking around the main town won’t cost you a dime—unless you’re one for souvenirs. In which case, negotiate!
  • For a quick bite to eat, try a panino at Sorrento’s best: N’hambu  for about €8.50
  • Fancy a day trip? Ferries to Capri are quicker and cheaper if you take the day trip from Sorrento instead of Positano. The 25-minute ride will be about €20 to €25.

In Positano:

  • Looking for the perfect spot for your first Positano Instagram post? Casually stroll into the fancy Le Sirenuse and ask them if you can take a quick snap from the lobby balcony. They’re very friendly and generous with their stunning viewpoint—it won’t cost you a dime!
  • Skip the touristy main beach and take a 5-minute walk around the corner from the Hotel Covo dei Saraceni to the more hidden Spiaggia Fornillo . This is where you can catch the sun rays for free with the other insiders.
  • Hop back on the Sita Bus for the 45-minute ride into Amalfi (€4). Spend the afternoon exploring the small town and its beautiful church .

capri day trip from positano

There are so many great restaurants on the Amalfi Coast . But to help you dive into the local cuisine without sacrificing an arm and a leg, here are some recommended places to eat and what to try there.

  • Looking for lunch? Try one of Kebab Ciampa ‘s fresh sandwiches.
  • Order a coffee at Puro .
  • Enjoy anything seafood at Chef Squillante !
  • You have to try the homemade seafood pasta at Ristorante il Borgo !
  • The smoothie bowl at Casa e Bottega is the perfect go-to for a hot day.
  • Go to Bar Bagni da Ferdinando for the seafood salad—fresh as it gets!
  • You can’t go wrong with anything grilled at C’era una Volta .
  • Try the ravioli at La Taverna del Leone —it’s delicious!

I recommend that you get up early.

capri day trip from positano

Although I suspect Ian B may have been a tad sarcastic, he is right about getting moving early to make this day work. You can nap on the train, if necessary.

The earliest you can get to Naples from Rome by high speed train is 8:12, on Trenitalia.

It will take a bit of time to get from the train station to the port by metro (faster than by taxi most of the time, due to traffic), so there is little to no chance of making the 8:35 ferry, but a good likelihood of getting the 9:10 on Snav, which arrives to Capri around 10:00.

At the other end of your day, the last ferry from Positano to Salerno departs at 18:30, arriving to Salerno at 19:40. That's plenty of time to make one of several high speed train options back to Rome on either Trenitalia or Italotreno.

The real problem is the limited number of ferries between Capri and Positano. The only reasonable one is the 15:10 on Lucibello, arriving to Positano around 16:00. That only allows you two and a half hours in Positano, after about five on Capri.

If that is sufficient for your needs, it's all do-able.

Do check if the date you choose has one or more large cruise ships in Naples, if so you might want to purchase your ferry ticket from Naples to Capri in advance.

Trenitalia: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Italotrento: https://www.italotreno.it/en

Travelmar ferries: https://www.travelmar.it/en/timetable-from-march-2024

And, please, do not underestimate the huge crowds in both these destinations if you are going this summer or in September

Be sure to be back in Marina Grande on Capri for your ferry to Positano as the crowds pack that port and it can take time to find the right berth for your ferry - I'd get there no less than 15 minutes before the ferry to Positano is supposed to depart.

Check http://www.capri.net for what you might want to see there

Be very sure to check the weather the day or at most 2 before you do this day as weather can be bad any time of year and ferries can get canceled - so, just check there's no storm in the forecast -

Good luck....
