When considering our options for transportation in New York City, I immediately suggested a bus tour. Sure, the subway is faster, but when you are sightseeing, traveling exclusively underground isn't a particularly enticing prospect. The reviews for Big Bus concerned me a bit at first, but their prices were good, and they had packages that appealed to us, so we went with them. It honestly was overall a decent experience. We chose the three-day package which included a ticket to the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty cruise/ferry. Overall, we paid about $129 each I believe. The first day we used our ticket for the night tour, which is about a 90 minute tour through Manhattan and Brooklyn. This one is NOT hop on/hop off, it's strictly a sightseeing tour. We enjoyed this though. It was cool to see the city and take some pics at night. The buses are two floors, with the bottom floor being climate controlled and completely covered, and the second floor being open with some having partially covered areas. While the open areas are the best for pictures, it was very cold out when we went, so I preferred the covered areas. They give you headphones to listen to the tour guide with. The tour guides are generally pretty entertaining, and they give you some good information about where you are. The hop on/hop off aspect as nice, allowing you to stop and get off at places you are interested in. We stuck to the downtown loop primarily. The drivers are pretty good about avoiding areas that will result in delays, and it was overall a nice way to get around the city. I took lots of great photos! There are a few complaints I had though. When we went, there was a lot of snow on the ground, and as a result, the stairs to the upper part of the bus were SUPER slippery. It would be nice if they were better equipped to keep them dry, because it was a tad scary getting up/down. Second, look, I get it - New York City traffic is bad. However, we waited in the cold at one of the stops for a good 40 minutes, eventually giving up and taking a taxi because there was no bus in sight. Again, I understand that traffic conditions are unpredictable, but if you're advertising buses every 20 minutes, then there should be buses within a reasonable amount of time. That was probably the biggest issue I had. Overall, however, we had a positive experience, and for the price, we got to see a lot of the city we wouldn't have otherwise. If you're willing to put up with a few service hiccups, this is a good choice.

A hop-on, hop-off bus tour is a great idea... just not with this company. Wait an hour for a bus, complain and get told you need to take it up with corporate. What a waste of a day, not to mention the money spent on the tour. Any other operator has to be better.

Very poor customer service. Waited forever to pick up bus by lucky strike by circle line. Poor directions. Toir guides were Useless

Nov 5, 2019

Good Afternoon Jeannie, We set a high standard for ourselves, and we're so sorry to hear this was not met in your interaction with our business. While our tours do experience a high volume of customers, we do our best to monitor the demand and plan for an increased number of buses during busier times to avoid overcrowding and extensive wait times. We always aim to deliver a great experience. We are gutted when we miss the mark. We recommend downloading our app, it provides passengers with real-time bus locations, GPS directions to the nearest bus stop, routes and stops. In regards to the guides, we expect all of our trained guides to present a commentary that is both informative and enjoyable, explaining the history of different buildings and sights, all while adding information and facts about Manhattan. They are also expected to treat our guests with courtesy, respect and kindness. We appreciate you providing names and descriptions of the tour guides and drivers that you had on your tours, to [email protected] as this information helps us with coaching and retraining. Kind Regards, BBTNY

This company is awful. We purchased the Classic Ticket plus Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise. When the ticket guy printed off our ticket, he only gave us one so when my husband, son, and I went to go on the cruise, they wouldn't let on because we only had one ticket. We went back to wait for the bus that took over 30mins to show up. The driver told us there's nothing he could do and the bus was full so we couldn't go on. So we walked to another stop where the driver said there's nothing he could do. After dinner we waited at the stop to get on the night tour. After waiting for over 30mins, I got on the app to figure out where the bus was and it said no live times. I got in the chat function to ask if the night tour was running and it took them 12 hours to message me back- and because I wasn't on, they didn't answer my question. I've been trying to get in contact with them to get a refund for the Crusie portion of my tour that they messed up but of course they don't have a working telephone number and they don't answer their live chat. On top of all of this, their audio didn't work so you didn't get to listen to the tour. I don't know if Top View is any better but I did see that bus frequently. In the 30mins I spent waiting for my bus, I would see 3 Top View busses stop. Might be a better option than this joke of a business.

The Downtown Route started well as we entered an empty bus in the morning. The hell started when we tried to return 4pm at Wall St stop. There was a line of over 100 people which wasn't getting smaller as each bus was already full taking sometimes taking 1 or 2 people. Families had to split up. Sad. Finally at 6:30 pm (2.5 hours) we got picked up. 30 mins in I called the customer rep phone and got a friendly person but unfortunately there was a clear disconnect between the dispatchers because they said an empty bus was 30-1hr away that NEVER came. Also there is no AC on the bottom level, so be sure to find a seat on top. And if not try to sit close to the stairs so as folks leave from the top you can be first to take the top seats. Also want to make a comment to some of the personalities of the driver & guides of each bus that stopped to only say there was no room left. Most were apologetic, but all said to complain to "the company". This baffles me. What *is* a company but the people who choose to work, service and wear the uniform? Passing the blame is not a good sign of happy workers. And unhappy workers lead to unhappy customers. There is no other outcome.

Long line at Wall St stop around 5pm. We had to wait 2.5 hrs to get a ride. Overall 5 buses came by but were already full.

90 degrees on the day of our tour, buses are in full sun upstairs and no a/c few windows downstairs. The audio only works on every other (or less) unit. Very disappointed for the money we paid, can't believe we'll have to do this a second day. At least some of the attractions we were going to do are included...

Good Afternoon Angela S., We appreciate that your time is limited, and we're sorry that you've got longer waiting times than normal. Although our tours face a high volume of visitors, we do our utmost to track demand and prepare for an increased number of buses at peak times to avoid overcrowding and long wait times. While the top level is open, we do partially cover dependent on weather. We do provide A/C in the bottom level and we have been ensuring all buses are equipped. As for the audio, we appreciate you bring it to our attention and please be assured, it will be reported to the designated department immediately. We appreciate your feedback and hope that the next time you visit New York, we will be able to exceed your needs. Kind Regards, BBTNY

The only reason I gave it 3 stars was because the gentleman who was explaining the sights was great, everything else was a joke. Of course on a beautiful spring day, tourist want to sit up top and why would anyone want to still on the bottom when it was easily 100 degrees down there. No A/C. And the man trying to get people on the bus berated the guest waiting in line stating that "he wasn't going to put up with any more of their crap". Yelling at them for at least 20 minutes while we all sat and listened instead of starting our tour. Also, the microphone didn't work so we could use our headphones and the pre recorded didn't work on all seats. Very unfortunate experience

Apr 29, 2017

Good Afternoon Jamie, Firstly, thank you for taking your time to leave your feedback as this helps us become better at what we do. We would like to extend our sincerest apologies for the unpleasant experience you went through when touring on one of our buses. When you have a moment please send us an email at [email protected] so that we have an opportunity to make this bad experience into a good one! We look forward to your email and we hope this does not deter you from riding with Big Bus in the future.

One star! Don't get on at the Time Square stop. We had to wait over an hour to get on the bus because the line was so long. The audio didn't work for the tour. We were treated to a horrible beeping sound like a smoke alarm going off when we plugged our headphones in. After standing in line that long we decided to stay on the bus until the 911 Memorial stop. We explored the area but when it was time to get back on the bus, the first bus that showed up was completely full. After waiting another 10 to 15 minutes another bus finally showed up. The driver was rude, didn't pull up all the way where everyone was lined up to get on so this created a situation where people who just showed up were able to push to the front of the line over those who had been waiting for almost 30 minutes. He said there were only 5 seats available in the lower section of the bus where the air conditioning wasn't working and no view. There actually were plenty of seats available in the lower section but no view of the sites. I will avoid this company for any future bus tours. They clearly sell as many tickets as possible with no consideration for bus capacity or their patrons experience. Waste of money.

Photo of Ingrid S.

Buyer beware! This is a very shady operation. You can't make changes to your tickets once they are booked and they say they do not refund tickets. A total scam shop!!! If I could give -5 stars I would.

Just returned from a business/family trip to NYC. My husband purchased the City Pass via Big Bus Tours and it was a great experience learning about the city and its history. I would have given 2 stars due to what we purchased versus what we actually got to do. We chose to do three tours - Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Madame Tussaud's. What we learned was to read the fine print even more. The bus ride itself equates to one of the tours, so that was done and gone . We were not happy about that, as well as the many ticket vendors on practically in every street corner selling tickets to ride their bus. What made my blood boil is that the ticket vendors gave different answers when we asked the same question about using our tickets via our smartphone. You will need to go into the headquarters located in Times Square to have actual tickets printed. Our hotel was located in Times Square so the walk wasn't too bad. On a very positive note, the tour guides were amazing. You receive complimentary earbuds to listen to their interpretation about the city. We rode the tour bus many times and learned different historical stories from each, it was pretty cool. My family and I did sit up on top when the weather was nice, it turned cold the next few days, but it is a great adventure if your visiting for the first time in that great big city. Future tip: Purchase tickets as a "hop on/hop off" ONLY! Purchase your tourist site at the location because it is not guaranteed that your pass will work! Make sure your get clarification as to what it includes as the fine print may change. Enjoy!

Big Bus History and Background

Big Bus Tours as it functions today is the result of a merger between two major sightseeing tour companies : Les Cars Rouges and Big Bus Company. Les Cars Rouges was founded in Paris in 1990, while Big Bus Company got its start a year later in London. The two rival tour operators would each grow their profile independently for some 20 years, launching numerous guided tours in major cities throughout the world.

In 2011, the two companies would undergo a merger to form Big Bus Tours. Today Big Bus Tours is the largest open-top bus tour operator in the world, with hundreds of buses running in nearly two-dozen major cities all across the world.

What’s Great about Big Bus?

Many New York City visitors who opt to go on a guided tour with Big Bus Tours choose to take the Classic Ticket tour. This is because, in essence, the Classic Ticket tour is the Uptown City Tour and Downtown City Tour combined together into one unforgettable experience.

These stops are: M&M World, Times Square (in front of the Knickerbocker Hotel), Empire State Building , Flatiron District, SoHo, Chinatown, Brooklyn Bridge , Wall Street, and Circle Line Sightseeing . Getting off at one of these stops will leave you well-positioned near such popular NYC attractions as One World Observatory , the 9/11 Memorial & Museum , the High Line , Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum , and more.

The uptown portion of the Classic Ticket tour makes 5 stops near notable New York City locations. These stops are: Times Square (in front of the Knickerbocker Hotel), 7th Avenue at West 50th Street, Columbus Circle, Central Park Zoo , and the Metropolitan Museum of Art . Depending on what you’re interested in seeing, disembarking at a stop on this leg of the tour will put you near attractions like the Museum of Modern Art , Rockefeller Center , Radio City Music Hall , St. Patrick’s Cathedral , and the Guggenheim Museum , just to name a few.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!
