arunachalam temple tourism

Long review, thanks for your patience. It was Purnima and Girivalam day on Sep 27, 2015 Sunday. Experience with swami darshan queue management, girivalam, facilities for pilgrims and was very disappointing, to say the least. There was the usual huge crowd on Purnima day as expected. Wanted to opt for the Rs. 50/- "special" dharshan and started chasing the end of the line from East Rajagopuram entrance. The line went on and on and people were forced to stand in queue in the hot sun and in an even worse stink from bathroom, garbage bins, garbage strewn all around. Came back to east entrance and saw the Rs. 20/- darshan queue - it seems to be ok as the wait was inside the temple complex and crowd was moving, at least to an extent. This was my biggest mistake and assumption! We were forced to wait under a tin roof with temperatures exceeding 38 deg C. Everyone in the queue thought we can complete the darshan in about 1.5 to 2 hrs. Absolutely no information from temple management on how long it would take for the Rs. 50 or for the Rs 20 darshans. Queue was not moving absolutely once we bought our tickets. Temperature was rising, most of us had kept our water bottles and our bags outside the temple. No water, nothing to eat while waiting in the queue and this extends for the next 6-7 hours! We manage to get some water from the cow shed on the way while in the queue. Few taps were working but it was never sufficient and if you did not have a bottle, you had to ask others to share their bottle to fill water and drink. You do not get anything to eat on the way if you have not brought items while entering the queue. The enclosure is a nightmare with all the push and pulls from people around, very difficult and nearly impossible to get out of the queue as well. It gets very bad in the places where queues merge or have to take a turn into a narrow entrance. No one from temple management is present to supervise crowd movement or to provide information. No bathrooms, absolutely no fans, no facilities whatsoever for the pilgrims. People in queue started shouting and banging the steel sheets but it was of no use. Finally before entering the main sanctum, when people asked a few policemen and temple staff what was going on, each one was just blaming others - police, management, crowd, etc. Finally one "senior" policeman said do not come on a Purnima day, come on a "normal" day! Wondering what the TN Goverment's HRCE would do with all the money collected. Easily it would be crores of rupees collected from entry ticket ALONE on EACH purnima day. For a Rs. 20 or for a Rs. 50 ticket, pilgrims do not even get a packet of vibuthi as prasadam, leave alone some prasadams to eat. Prasadams to eat are sold at atrocious rates within the temple. Though a laddu costs Rs. 10 with very average quality, you NEED to buy a minimum of 5 laddus! No facilities for pilgrims and total "don’t care" attitude from temple management. Few people who pay Rs. 1000 - Rs. 2000 at entrance to policemen or temple staff get "special" treatment and obviously this bribe money is not accounted in the temple and not used for any temple/pilgrims related activities. Less talked about the girivalam route, the better. Again, pilgrims are forced to walk on tar road for almost the first half of the girivalam route under hot sun. Path is not marked clearly and you have to wade through traffic all the time. Pathways when they start are totally occupied by hawkers/shops and you need to jump through these shops if you choose the walk way. Walk way tiles are specifically made to hurt your feet!!! The whole area is an open toilet as there are not enough well maintained rest rooms or even places to just sit and relax in the entire 14Km or so walking path. People also have made this whole girivalam a shopping and a fun outing than to do girivalam reciting arunachala siva or om namashivaya (There are still a few who are completely filled with bakthi and devotion - but very few). Auto/Share auto drive as if they are driving in F1 in spite of the crowd on the road and since this is the only mode for pilgrims travel, they also charge like seeing the F1 race from sky box. How about Rs. 200 for about 2Kms trip, that too in shared mode?? Whole walking area is filled with filth with plastic, cups, eatables, waste. If it rains or if there is no power during the night, it becomes all the more miserable. Management has not thought through any of these possibilities! There are no volunteers nor is there anyone from police to watch/help. While there is an immediate need for more space, the entire space around the temple has been occupied illegally by hawkers, shops, brokers, autos, etc. Not able to see any public transport direct from and to the temple, at least to the bus stands. Entire focus is to rip people and take their money in all possible ways but do nothing for them in return. In the name of kumbabhishekam and repairs, original stone structures are being disfigured. Even the way people are asked to move for swami darshan cutting across between nandi and swami does not seem to be right. It is very pathetic and getting worse by the day. Tiruvannamalai town is even more pathetic with garbage everywhere, totally unplanned buildings/shops and overflowing gutters. Everyone while waiting in the queue for swami darshan seem to say even Arunachala is looking at all these things (and allowing such things rather than punishing). Not sure if HE would get into action directly or bless few people to improve things at Thiruvannamalai. With all these things going, not sure how many of us could think and pray of Arunchala in an unhindered way. I could not! The policeman at the temple seems to be right - do not go to Thiruvannamalai on purnima/girivalam day!

The temple construction is massive and it has huge Gopuram in each direction. Connectivity from other places or cities is excellent. It takes around an hour for Darshan on normal days (except pournami). On the day of Pournami, there is a huge crowd as it is considered very auspicious. In addition to the temple of Shiva, there are many other shrines. Do have the prasadam here.

Tell me I have reached somewhere, and this temple is a place to reach. Ancient symmetry and spirituality gets us close to the proud achievements of Tamil people.

After finishing Girivalam i visited the temple in Aug 2015. Since i went for morning darshan the crowd was much less. Had a wonderful darshan

It is the largest Shiva temple, situated in the picturesque Annamalai hills. Believed to be the largest Shiva temple in the world, the history of Arunachaleswarar Temple dates back to thousands of years. Spread over 10 hectares of land at the base of the Annamalai hills, the temple houses 4 gopurams or gateway towers. The temple provides accommodation at a nominal fare.

Tiruvannamalai Travel Guide

With its history closely knitted to the famous Annamalaiyar Temple, Tiruvannamalai is a destination that is steeped in history and spirituality. The headquarters of a district in Tamil Nadu of the same name, the city spreads in the foothills of Annamalai Hills atop which stands the divine Hindu pilgrimage destination, Arunachaleshwar Temple Kulam. Yes, the credit for major Tiruvannamalai tourism can be given to this religious place that is dedicated to Lord Shiva where he worshipped in the form of a Lingam. It is believed that Lord Shiva is present here as Agni (Fire) Lingam. Here, Goddess Parvati is worshipped in the form of Unnamulaiyamman. Spreading in 10 hectares of land, this top place to visit in Tiruvannamalai has not only made its mark as one of the largest temples in India but it boasts housing the tallest Gopuram (Spire) in the country at 66 m. We were 6, Me(Abhishek), Indu, Abhishek (another Abhishek), Ramya, Lavanya and Ramesh. Ramesh is my friend and rest of them are my office friends. Some how Ramesh dropped of the plan and I asked my colleague Deepak to join the trip and he said ok and we kept it as secret to give surprise to others. So now Abhishek, Indu, Ramya, Abhishek, Lavanya and Deepak(Others were still thinking Ramesh was coming but no one know the surprise).

As there are no direct buses / trains from Hyderabad to Tiruvannamalai, we left with the options to go Bangalore / Chennai. From there we searched for Chennai to Tiruvannamalai trains but we couldn't find anything as per our schedule and we thought bus would be better option. Now we chosed to go through Chennai than Bangalore as bus frequency will be more from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai.

Indu boarded the train at Hyderabad Railway Station and Me, Ramya, Lavanya and Abhishek boarded the train at Secunderabad Railway station at 7:00 PM and everyone got into our seats and then came the moment of Deepak's entry and everyone was surprised as expected and were happy. We have played UNO cards and spent some good time in the train. Our journey from Hyderabad to Tiruvannamalai had begun on a fun note!

Chennai Central Railway Station

The train arrived on time at Chennai Central Railway Station and came out and finished our breakfast and headed towards the CMBT in metro. Unlike other routes, the route from Central to CMBT was more of an underground.

CMBT Koyembedu

We reached CMBT by 10:00 AM and there was an AC bus on the platform. Bus started at 10:30 AM from CMBT to Tiruvannamalai. The can get buses from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai every 20-30min.

Tiruvannamalai

We arrived at Tiruvannamalai at 3:00 PM and took for Andra Ashramam (The ashram where we booked our rooms). We reserved 2 rooms earlier and paid 650 per room. We freshedup and decided to do giri pradakshina ( Pradakshina of 14Kms round the mountain). The hill which is octagonal in shape is surrounded by 8 Lingams and they are called Ashta Lingams.

1. Indra Lingam

2. Agni Lingam

3. Yama Lingam

4. Niruthi Lingam

5. Varuna Lingam

6. Vayu Lingam

7. Kubera Lingam

8. Esanya Lingam

At 5:00 PM we dressed up traditionally and took an auto to Agni Lingam temple(2nd Lingam) and started our pradakshina from there but we aren't aware that we have to start from Indra Lingam.

Though it was 5:30 PM in the evening the road was still hot and our feet could feel it. Initially we all were at good pace and covered Yama Lingam and reached Nirudhi Lingam by 6:00 PM. From there the batch splitted, Indu and Lavanya were going ahead of rest.

Nirudhi Lingam

Now that deepak is somewhat slow and even Ramya's feet were burnt as the road was hot as we were doing without footwear.

We were going slow now as she couldn't walk on the bear foot with those burns and stopped in the middle to drink soda and suddenly she saw footwear in that shop. So we bought that and now she is a bit ok to walk.

At 7:20PM we reached Vayu Lingam (6th of 8 Lingams) and now our target was to do darshan before the temple closes at 9:00 PM.

Vayu Lingam

In another 30 min we walked till Kubera Lingam (7th Lingam). Now we have covered 3/4th of the pradakshina and still 1/4th is remaining and we still have Esanya Lingam (8th Lingam) and Indra Lingam (1st Lingam as we started from Agni Lingam) with just 1 hour left.

Kubera Lingam

At 8:30PM we reached the Esanya Lingam and had our darshan, by this time we called Indu and Lavanya and they told that they have done the pradakshina and were in the main temple for darshan.

Esanya Lingam

From here Deepak and Ramya took auto as deepak has intention to cover all Lingams by foot and done it and other side Ramya was unable to walk.

Now Me and another Abhishek started with an intention to complete the full pradakshina and reached Arunachalam Temple, Tamil Nadu by 9:00 PM and we got to know that Arunachalam Temple remains open till 9:30 PM and Indra Lingam is already closed. So we decided to do darshan in main temple we all of us met inside the temple. Ramya couldn't walk as she was injured severely and decided to do darshan the next day morning. After coming out me and Abhishek started for Indra Lingam which is very near to the main temple and others went for the dinner.

Though Arunachalam Temple was closed we could get the darshan of lord from the outside. After this we thought that we would finish the whole pradakshina by doing it till Agni Lingam. We know we didn't start in the right manner but we want to do it completely. We completed the pradakshina at 10:00 PM after having the darshan at Agni Lingam.

We thought Ramya was injured but got to know that Indu was also in that list and they put their legs in the hot water and applied ointment after reaching room.

Indu, after Pradakshina

We woke up in the morning and again started for Arunachalam Temple at 7:00 AM and Indu wants to take rest and he didn't came to the temple.

By the time we reached Arunachalam Temple it was 7:20 AM and as there was a big queue we decided to go in special darshan with a ticket of 20/- per head.

We finished our darshan of Arunachalam Temple and came out at 8:30 AM and had our breakfast.

By the time we came to the room, Indu was sitting on a chair and applied some turmeric powder to his leg.

Later we started to the bus stand and enquired about bus to Chennai and this time we couldn't get AC bus as it would depart at 5:00 PM. We got into the ordinary bus at 11:00 AM and reached Koyambedu(Chennai) at 2:30 PM, finished our lunch at Anand Bhavan and headed to central in Metro.

The two patients (Indu and Ramya) were discussing something

Its trouble time for Indu again and we had to take him in wheel chair in the metro station and from there auto to Central.

We boarded the Charminar Express at 6:00 PM and reached Hyderabad the next day morning at 7:30 AM with lots of wonderful memories of Tiruvannamalai and Arunachalam Temple.

TEMPLE & ASHRAM ETIQUETTE ON VISITING TIRUVANNAMALAI TEMPLES & ASHRAMS

Image result for TIRUVANNAMALAI TEMPLE

A TOUR TO TIRUVANNAMALAI IS ALWAYS A TRIP TAKEN TO VISIT THE TEMPLES AND ASHRAMS IN TIRUVANNAMALAI. IT HELPS TO KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT TEMPLE ETIQUETTE IN TIRUVANNAMALAI BEFORE ENTERING. HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO GUARANTEE AN ENJOYABLE VISIT TO THE TEMPLES IN TIRUVANNAMALAI.

LEAVE YOUR FOOTWEAR OUTSIDE THE TEMPLE IN A SAFE PLACE

Tiruvannamalai Temple Etiquette | Bare feet

The passageway of most temples in Tiruvannamalai is stacked by shoe racks or separate area is given by the temple management for leaving your foot wear . Entering with your bare foot is an indication of regard and humility when you bow and pray to the almighty. It’s a convention that is correspondingly seen in Indian homes also.

HIDE THE CAMERA AWAY

Tiruvannamalai Ashram Etiquette | Saints in Tiruvannamalai

While the multifaceted carvings inside the Tiruvannamalai temples have every one dashing to their camera for dazzling collection, temple and ashram decorum directs that cameras and cell phones are forbidden. Most ashrams in Tiruvannamalai have a ‘No Photography’ approach, however if all else fails, check with the Tiruvannamalai temple authorities.

Arunachala Temple Etiquette | Dress code in Tiruvannamalai temples

Cover yourself when entering the temples in Tiruvannamalai, and much more so in Tiruvannamalai ashrams. Dress fully in saree or salwar —no shorts—and convey an extra shawl to cover exposed shoulders.

Stay away from LEATHER in Tiruvannamalai temples

Few Stricter temples in Tiruvannamalai deny cowhide, including adornments, for example, belts, wallets and sacks, in view of the Hindu adoration for cows. Shoes and socks can regularly be left to the watchman at the temple or at a  vendor for a little expense.

Tidiness AND GODLINESS

Numerous tourists to Tiruvannamalai clean up before entering the ashrams and temples, which is the explanation behind the immense water tanks available in most temples in Tiruvannamalai. While this specific temple behavior has loosened after some time, a pre-visit wash is viewed as great practice.

MAKE AN OFFERING

Most temples in Tiruvannamalai will have donation boxes either at the entrance of the temple of near the main God.If you wish to donate you are make your offering into the donations box.

WALK CLOCKWISE

Join the tides of admirers as they stroll around the inward sanctum a clockwise way. It’s a walk known as pradakshina, and offers respect to the gods when going around them.

Welcome THE GODS

It’s uncommon that a Hindu temple will house just a single god. As a rule, its fixed with various vivid statues of divinities. Circumnavigating a clockwise way, stop at every god and unite your palms before the chest in an aware motion of ‘Namaste’. Give your offering before the god statue, or offer it to the pandit standing near the godly statue.

Acknowledge THE GIFTS

After the pandit plays out the puja, or petition, desserts known as prasad are offered to the guests. It’s frequently organic product or sweet. Acknowledge it in your correct hand and appreciate it once you have left the temple.

Keep silence in Tiruvannamalai temples and ashrams

Visitors to Tiruvannamalai temples must remain silent and respect the calm atmosphere that prevails in these temples.

Finally and lastly please do not courage touts or beggars in Tiruvannamalai temples or at Tiruvannamalai Ashrams.
