Sunrise at Volcan Baru: Jeep Tour

Watching the sunrise at Volcan Baru is one of the most adventurous things to do in Panama and will be a highlight of your Panama itinerary . The bumpy ride to the top will result in the most epic view in the country, standing at the volcanic peak, watching the sunrise over the Pacific and Caribbean. This guide includes helpful tips for the sunrise jeep tour of Volcan Baru.

Are you considering taking the Volcan Baru jeep tour? Here is my honest review of the 4×4 sunrise jeep tour with Beyond Adventure Tours.

About Volcan Baru

Standing 3474 m high, Volcan Baru is the highest point in Panama. The only Panamian volcano, Baru, has the 12th highest peak in Central America. With seven volcanic craters, there are several hiking trails to see each, varying in difficulty level.

Found inside Volcan Baru National Park, the park is home to over 240 species of birds, 86 types of mammals, 25 bat species, and 7 types of jungle cats. The view from the top of Baru Volcano is lush and unforgettable; it is the only place in the world where you can see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on a clear day.

Can You Drive Up Volcan Baru?

There are two ways to travel up the volcano: jeep tour or hiking. You cannot drive your own vehicle up the volcano as the road is extremely rough, and even a regular 4×4 is not enough to conquer it. It takes really good tires and skilled driving to reach the top.

volcan baru jeep tour

Volcan Baru: Jeep Tour vs Hiking

If you want to experience the sunrise at Volcan Baru, but don’t want to do the long hike, the 4×4 jeep tour is for you. It takes about an hour of driving up the steep and winding 14km road and then another hour back down the volcano by jeep. If you have back problems, it may not be best to take the jeep tour due to all of the bumping around in the jeep while it climbs over boulders and potholes. Be prepared for how bumpy it is, and choose to go up Volcan Baru at your own discretion.

volcan baru overnight hike

Prefer to hike? Hiking to the top will take 5-8 hours in each direction, depending on your fitness level. Do not hike Volcan Baru if you are not physically fit. It is a challenging hike, especially the last portion up to the summit, where you will rock climb. The air is thinner at the summit, so prepare for heavier breathing the higher altitude you reach to get to the top. During my jeep tour, we saw people who had hiked to the top, and they told us how they started their hike around 11 pm to midnight to reach the top before sunrise.

Sunrise Jeep Tour with Beyond Adventure Tours

Here is what it’s like going on the sunrise jeep tour with Beyond Adventure Tours:

Our morning began with an early start as we were to be ready for pickup outside our hotel at 3:45 am. Hopping in the jeep, we headed off to pick up the rest of the group for today’s tour. There were six of us, including the driver, and we called each other by the countries we called home: Switzerland, Poland, USA, and us two Canadians. We were on our way to Volcan Baru National Park.

volcan baru national park

Once checked in with the park ranger, you will begin the super bumpy ride up the volcano. And I’m not exaggerating about how rough it is. It may be only a 14 km ride, but your guide drives the steep incline, curving around and conquering large boulders and potholes along the road. It makes for quite the adventure! Luckily we had the slow driver, as he called himself. We were all thankful, as we couldn’t imagine driving up the volcano faster.

volcan baru summit in panama

After an hour or so of driving slowly up the volcano, we stopped. We had reached a smooth platform where the jeeps would park, and we would continue by foot to hike to the summit. At this point, my stomach was all out of wack from the bumpy ride, so I took a motion sickness pill to help me be able to climb. It was still dark out at this point. We slowly headed to the top, feeling the air a little thinner at this elevation.

volcan baru sunrise

We made it to the top! The view from the summit was incredible and breathtaking. Shortly after, the sun peeked above the clouds. Seeing the sunrise over Volcan Baru was all I had hoped for, an unforgettable experience.

Caribbean sea from volcan baru

We could see the Caribbean Sea in the distance, but the Pacific Ocean hadn’t shown itself yet. After waiting awhile and soaking in the views, the cloud forest started to roll in. In the distance, the Pacific Ocean made its appearance. Lucky us! Watching the sunrise over two major bodies of water from the summit of a volcano, we felt like we were on top of the world!

volcan baru jeep tour breakfast

After hiking back down to where the jeeps are waiting, it is time for breakfast. Breakfast included warm ham sandwiches and hot chocolate or coffee. It was the perfect way to warm up after the hike. While eating breakfast, we had a surprise appearance from the local wildlife. The little animal was very friendly and would ask for scraps. Once finished breakfast, it is time to head back down the volcano, this time by daylight.

volcan baru road conditions

It’s the same bumpy path back to the bottom, but in the daylight, you can see all the boulders and potholes. Safely at the volcano base, the tour concluded and we were each dropped back off at our hotels. What a great morning, and it was only 9:30 am at the finish!

Prices for the sunrise 4×4 jeep tour with Beyond Adventure Tours start at 125 USD per adult. They also offer hiking with a guide starting at 90 USD and overnight camping starting at 160 USD. The jeep tour includes breakfast and hot drinks at the top of Volcan Baru after you watch the sunrise.

Tips for the Volcan Baru Jeep Tour

  • Dress warmly and in layers , as it’s cold at the volcanic peak, especially before sunrise. I wore a tank top, t-shirt, athletic sweater, and a light jacket, and I was still cold. Others wore jackets and hats, and some people even brought blankets. Plan to wear an extra layer than you think you need, as you can always take it off if you get too warm.
  • If motion sickness affects you, take medication before boarding the jeep or once you get out of the jeep at the top to climb to the peak. The ride was incredibly bumpy, and while I didn’t think I would be affected, I felt sick at the top and took a motion sickness pill before climbing, which helped.
  • Get plenty of sleep before your sunrise jeep tour, and plan the rest of your day lightly after, as you will most likely want to nap when you return. When my tour finished around 9:30 am, I was exhausted and napped for 2-3 hours.

Volcan Baru Sunrise Tour with Beyond Adventure Tours: Final Thoughts

Watching the sunrise at Volcan Baru was one of the best things I’ve done in Panama. I love volcanoes and this was my third volcano experience, after volcano boarding Cerro Negro in Nicaragua and horseback riding Taal Volcano in the Philippines . It was the bumpiest ride of my life, but oh, it was so much fun!  I had a positive experience and would recommend the sunrise jeep tour of Volcan Baru with Beyond Adventure Tours.

While yes, it’s cheaper to hike, after watching what the hike up would be like, I was very happy I chose to drive up. Our tour group was a fun bunch, and we made unforgettable memories while being bumped around in the jeep from the rough path, laughing along the way. Whether you choose to hike or take the 4×4 jeep tour, if you are considering Volcan Baru, I highly recommend you go.

Baru Volcano Trip, a guided Hike to the Top.  At 3,475 meters (11,400 feet), "el Volcan Baru" is the highest point of Panama.

Join us to make the steep and rugged climb by foot. You will make your way to the dormant volcano’s summit, as you traverse through rolling green hills, lush jungle, and finally to rocky cliffs.

Volcan Baru, a dormant volcano just south of the Continental Divide, is one of the only places in the world where you can see both, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time with the naked eye. Dozens of people attempt the climb daily, hoping to make summit before the gorgeous sunrise shines above the clouds, to then light up the beautiful mountain town of Boquete. It is a unique sensation to be on Panama's highest point

Located in the western province of Chiriqui; The towns of Volcan, Cerro Punta and Guadalupe can be found on its western side, while Boquete is on the eastern flank. The fertile volcanic soil and climate of the area make it one of Panama's most productive agriculture regions as it is also drained by the Chiriqui and Caldera Rivers. The Volcan Baru is roughly equidistant from Panama's northern and southern coastlines, and only about 25 kilometers east of the border with Costa Rica. Due to its height and Panama's relatively short width it is possible to see both the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean (the Caribbean Sea to be more precise) from the Volcan Baru's peak on a clear day.Large trees dominate the Baru Volcano's lower slopes, giving way on the upper slopes to smaller plants, bushes, scrub and alpine wildflowers. To learn more about the wildlife that you could encounter read about the Baru Volcano National Park, on the right side of this page. From the summit, you will get the breath-taking panoramic view of both of Panama’s coastlines, the Pacific and the Caribbean for a “once-in-lifetime” opportunity to witness a volcano sunrise from the highest point in Panama.

We will meet at a pre-arranged location(Plaza Los Establos by default) at 11:00 PM. Next we will check that all the necessary gear and hiking equipment is in place and begin to get acquainted with the rest of our fellow hikers who will accompany us forthe following 12 hours. A short security briefing is given by our tour guide and then we commence our journey.

We start our hike at 11:30 PM

The scenery during the hike is very dynamic. From rolling grass-covered hills to the dense jungle and even rocky cliffs, the sights are endless. At the 9 km mark, there is a view of one of the craters which is quite impressive. Extinct for nearly 500 years, the crater is completely covered with growth, as are the crater's walls. Some trails exist on the top, leading to either side of the crater. Other trails to smaller craters also exist, however, we are headed to conquer the Volcano's peak.

When the sun starts to rise, beautiful colors of purple, orange, pink and red appear. The sky slowly changes from black to blue while the clouds dissipate and re-form due to the temperature changes caused by the rising sun. This is the best moment to see the oceans. It is hard to put into words how amazing it is to watch this new day begin. You may have seen sunrises before, but surely few compare to one witnessed at the top of Baru.

Arriving at the top before the sun comes out gives you an amazing opportunity to see how the stars and moon hide just before you witness one of the most spectacular sunrises of your life. On a clear day you will also be able to see the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the top. This once in a lifetime opportunity is sure to not dissapoint.

Return at 11:00 AM

Volcan Baru National Park

Visit the highest point in the country, which also happens to be a volcano! At 3,474 meters high, the towering Baru Volcano is the 12th highest peak in Central America and the only place in the world where, on the clearest of days, you can see the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the same time. The Volcano and its surrounding land feature five different ecosystems thanks to a combination of rainforest highlands, as well as the byproducts of volcanic eruptions that occurred millions of years ago.

Volcan Baru National Park is located in the province of Chiriqui , which is an internationally recognized producer of geisha coffee, thanks to the area’s volcanic soil. This high-quality coffee is grown at extremely high altitudes and is one of the most expensive coffee varieties in the world. Make sure to pick some up when you visit!

Baru Volcano has seven craters, and several hiking trails you can take to see them. Some trails are quite challenging, while others are shorter and more accessible. If you’re a very experienced hiker, you can make the epic journey to the top of the volcano via the town of Volcan. This demanding hike can take up to eight hours there and back. For a more accessible journey to the top, you can enter the park in the town of Boquete, where you can access the peak by 4x4 in about 90 minutes, or by hiking on a long, but easier trail. When you get to the top, you’ll be standing at the highest point in Panamá. If the timing’s right, stay for an incredible sunset above the clouds, or consider camping there to experience a night close to the stars.

Getting There

The Baru Volcano is located in the Chiriqui Highlands, surrounded by the towns of Boquete, Volcan and Cerro Punta. The entrance of the Park is in Boquete, where hikes and most tours start from.

27km Volcan Baru Overnight Hike: Sunrise Volcano Trek In Panama

Trekking to the top of Volcan Baru is easily the most adventurous expedition in the Boquete region. Most trekkers walk through the night to reach the summit at sunrise. If the weather is good you will be above the clouds with incredible views.

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING VOLCAN BARU

At 11:45 pm we set off in darkness, climbing a steep path into the mist of the night. Our mission was to reach the highest point in Panama in time to watch the sunrise from our viewpoint above the clouds. We were attempting the strenuous, overnight hike up Volcan Baru near Boquete, Panama.

To reach the entrance, we booked a taxi for 11:30 pm from Mamallena Hostel in Boquete town. I found two other hikers at the hostel to join me for the journey! A girl from England and a young guy from Germany. Our backpacks were stocked with snacks, water, and warm clothes and of course, mine was mostly camera gear.

The Volcan Baru National Park Station was unmanned and we stepped around the fence and ticked off the first official meter. We had been told the trail was actually closed but with no real report on that, we decided to go for it anyway. The station is only staffed till late afternoon so we knew we could head on in any way. The weather looked clear so it didn’t seem that it would be too dangerous. This was echoed by a local guide I had asked and the front-desk staff at Mamallena.

Incline. That is the only real way, to sum up, this trail. It begins with an incline and ends with more incline. Throughout the Volcan Baru trail, you will ascend more than 1300m in total by the time you hit the summit. The good thing to know is that for the most part, the trail has a gradual incline rather than incredibly steep sections. It was also handy that after each section of incline, the trail seemed to flatten out so you could recover before the next incline stung you.

Muddy. Several sections of the Volcan Baru trail were in fact quite muddy and we did our best to keep our feet as dry as possible. Somehow cars manage to get to the top of this road, which when you see it the next morning as you walk down will surprise you immensely. It is often rocks and mud in piles, hardly a road you want to be driving up or walking along in the dark. That’s why it is important to have a headlight or a torch for the journey. Other than some mud and rocks, the trail is straightforward and easy to follow.

With the steady incline, we were making time very well. Too well. We calculated that we would reach the summit far too early and be waiting in the freezing cold at the top of Volcan Baru for the sun to rise. We started to take longer breaks while it wasn’t too cold yet.

There isn’t too much to see during the night except for a few nice vistas of the city lights. Other than that, the sound of birds and animals kept us on edge as did the ever-rolling fog.

volcanoes in panama, volcano panama, volcano in panama, volcano baru, baru volcano, volcan baru hike, voclan baru panama, volcan baru national park, parque nacional volcan baru

There were signs along the way, which were a good motivator. At every 1-2 kilometers, a green and yellow metal sign would tell you how far you had trekked, how far you had to go, and how high you were. We looked forward to these signs and looked out for them around each corner as we edged closer to the Volcan Baru summit.

As we trudged on into the night, sharing stories and travel tales, we were starting to tire. In fact, it was the first time in my life I have started to fall asleep while walking. It’s a thing.

We made it to the 11.5 km mark of the Volcan Baru trail and realized we were way too early. It was 4 am and the sunrise was at 630 am. It would only take us 30-40 minutes maximum to reach the summit from this point. We decided to find an area as hidden from the wind as possible and wait it out until 530 am and then begin the trek to the summit. It was freezing cold waiting and I found myself pacing and doing jumping jacks to keep warm. I also found myself falling asleep while standing up. *TIP: Leave at 1230am from Boquete town and you will have timed the run much better than us.

By the time 530am rolled around we were all frozen but the sky was now a soft blue. We were so stoked to get moving and that we might actually get a decent sunrise. Boquete had been raining for two weeks straight so we assumed we wouldn’t get much of a show but now all of a sudden we had hope. The sky was blue and quite clear.

Energized by the hope of a sunrise at the summit of Volcan Baru, we set off with renewed vigor, eager to reach the summit. As we edged closer and closer the sky became clearer and clearer. We reached the camping area, which is at the foot of the trail to the summit. We could now see the radio towers and had already noticed that the clouds were in fact, below us.

The sky was now starting to turn pink and I had turned it up a gear as I wanted to be at the summit right now! The final trail to the summit is quite steep but we were motoring. Everyone could tell it was going to be an epic sunrise. We were getting so lucky!

We made it to the summit! 13km of effort in the cold and the dark and now we were here. We looked out over to the horizon and all we could see was a blanket of clouds below us, the sun was trying to break through, and then, it did just that.

volcanoes in panama, volcano panama, volcano in panama, volcano baru, baru volcano, volcan baru hike, voclan baru panama, volcan baru national park, parque nacional volcan baru

Now we had the perfect sunrise as the clouds lit up and began flowing up toward us. It was a crazy moment as the three of us stood on the edge of the summit and watched clouds surge towards us with incredible speed. The stoke couldn’t have been any higher.

We hung out watched the clouds and shot for about an hour at the summit. Our fingers were frozen and we decided we had hit the limit and needed to trek back down to warmer temperatures. We were really lucky that the sun was out, which softened the blow of the cold summit. I can’t imagine it on a cold, rainy morning!

The trek back down was quite slow but it was great to see all of the scenery we missed in the darkness the night before. We kept our eyes peeled for the elusive Quetzal but didn’t spot any. Some of the jungle scenes on the way down are beautiful and almost worth the hike in themselves.

It took us about 3 hours to make the trek back down with a few lengthy breaks. You can likely make it down much quicker if you need to. We even spotted a very calm little lizard on the trail during our trek down.

We reached the sign-in station and the man asked us to sign our names but didn’t ask us to pay. Our luck just seemed to continue.

We then caught the colectivo bus back to Boquete for $4 per person and headed straight to Sobroson’s Cafe for a feed and a recovery coffee. That afternoon I slept for five hours til 7. I then woke up, edited all the photos, and went back to sleep from 11 to 8 the next morning and I was good to go from that point onwards!

Hiking Volcan Baru was my favorite moment from my Panama trip so far and I highly suggest it. I hope you get as lucky as us with the weather and the sunrise!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE HIKING VOLCAN BARU

Weather: The weather is freezing from mid-way through the hike and only gets colder as you get higher and higher. Depending on the season, it can be sub-zero at the summit and incredibly windy.

It is important to check the forecast because it will be a miserable hike if you are dripping wet. I understand you might need to take a risk on the weather if you only have a couple of nights in Boquete and want to hike Volcan Baru. However, make sure you check the weather and pick the best possible night as 27km in the freezing old as you are wet is going to be one hell of a journey!

It wouldn’t necessarily be dangerous in the rain as the trail is on a road the whole way. You may slip a lot but you aren’t going to fall down a mountain on the trail. However, at the summit on the rocks, it can get dangerous with big drop-offs. I would be very, very cautious in wet weather at this summit. The photos I took on the rocks were on a completely dry day as you can see from the sun! Always play to the weather. Be smart and don’t try and take on mother nature. She never loses.

Distance: 13km to the summit and 13km return the same way out. 27km total.

Clothes: You might be a backpacker like me and don’t travel with a ski jacket or hiking gear. What I suggest is to borrow one from someone in town or at the hostel. I would also buy a pair of $2 gloves from Boquete town. I wore shorts to begin the hike, running shoes, a t-shirt, a rain jacket, and a beanie. Throughout the hike, it got colder and colder. After 10km of hiking, I was no longer hot and changed into my second dry t-shirt, put my pants on and put my hoodie on underneath my rain jacket. I was bloody freezing at this point! I really wished I had a down jacket.

Entrance Fee: We were told there is a $5 entrance fee. However, there is no one at the station when you arrive at night. Therefore, we were expecting to pay it on the way down. There is even a sign at the bottom that says the fees. However, we arrived the next morning, the man at the station made us sign our names but never asked for a fee. Assume there is a $5 fee but it isn’t always collected apparently.

Solo or in a group?: I am a solo traveler and do a lot of hikes and dangerous activities by myself. However, I am very glad I did this with two people I met at the hostel. Walking in the night into the misty darkness was very creepy. We were joking that it was a bit of a horror movie scene. It is possible of course to do it alone but it’s a bit spooky and unless you are looking for some kind of challenge against your fears, I suggest grabbing a mate from the hostel. It’s also great to have a hiking mate for safety.

Is Volcan Baru active: The volcano is not currently active and is safe to hike into as of 2018.

Volcan Baru height: The Volcano is 3475m above sea level making it the highest point in Panama. We were well above the clouds at the summit, which is one of my favorite things ever!

HOW TO GET TO VOLCAN BARU ENTRANCE

There are several options for how to get to Volcan Baru. There are actually two routes to the top. One is from the Cerro Punta side and one is from the Boquete side. I can tell you about the Cerro Punta side but I trekked in from the Boquete side, as do most people because it is much easier (still quite hard) than the Cerro Punta side.

The most common option is to organize a taxi for you and your friends. From Mamallena hostel, they have a standard rate of $7 per person or a minimum of $20 for their regular taxi man. It isn’t a cheap ride considering the distance but it is quite late at night. The distance from Boquete town to the Volcan Baru hike entrance is 11 kilometers. We hiked up in a group of three so we paid $7 each. The staff at Mamallena booked the taxi for us and made sure it was on time. If you are not organizing it through Mamallena Hostel, you will need to meet and greet a taxi driver during the day and agree on a meeting place and a cost. It won’t be hard to organize.

The other option is to walk to the start of the trail, which I highly discourage as it is 11km to the trail entrance and then you will have a 27km round-trip.

VOLCAN BARU MAP LOCATION

HOW TO GET BACK TO BOQUETE FROM VOLCAN BARU

To get back to Boquete from Volcan Baru you have cheaper options available than when you arrived. This is because after watching the sunrise and trekking down it is likely around midday. Therefore, the bus service is running. Once you hike down back past the sign-in station, walk to the bottom of the hill. The bus service will pick you up from here and the fee for us was $4 per person. It will be hard to get a taxi from this point so the bus really is your only option. The bus will drop you right back into Boquete town.

Hi, thank you for great post about this hike. Just a question. When have you done this hike? There is a date on the top saying June 2023, but below are comments from 2018? Just asking to know about prices, if this is a recent article or it will be different when I visit this place. Thank you man

Is it possible to drive to the start of the trail yourself? Is there a place to park?

Kirby Lodholz

Thursday 14th of July 2022

@Veerle, Yes, you can park at the entrance.

Wednesday 16th of March 2022

We wanted to climb the vulcano during the day and we got very disappointed at the start of the climb. We weren't allowed to enter because we didn't make a reservation (which is so weird, it's just a national park). So if you're planning on doing this hike during the day, please make sure you ask your hotel/hostel to make the reservation for you.

Baru Volcano National Park, Panama

Set just outside the town of Boquete in Panama’s western highlands, the Barú Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcán Barú) is large and impressive. The park contains Panama’s only volcano, highest peak, and several scenic (albeit rugged) hiking trails. Birders are especially fond of the park, as it offers the chance to spot one of Central America’s most elusive birds, the resplendent quetzal.

Baru Volcano National Park Panama

The Barú Volcano National Park extends across 14,300 hectares (35,336 acres). The volcano rises to a height 3,478 meters (11,411 ft.), the highest point in Panama. On a clear day, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea from the peak. The volcano, which has seven craters, is no longer active but has had four eruptive episodes over the past 1,600 years, the most recent of which was 400-500 years ago. Seismic events during the 20th century and a recent 2006 earthquake serve as reminders of the tectonic terrain that still exists beneath the volcano.

The Barú Volcano National Park includes a variety of climates and terrain. There are humid montane forests, low humid montane forests, and montane rain forests. Some 250 species of birds have been spotted within the park, including the resplendent quetzal, the black-bellied hummingbird, black-cheeked warbler, yellow-thighed finch, and the hairy woodpecker. All five of the big cat species live within the park, including pumas and leopards, as well as porcupines and other mammals. Average temperatures vary between 20°C (68°F) to 10°C (50°F).

One of the park’s most popular trails is the Sendero Los Quetzales (Quetzals Trail), which runs between Cerro Punta and Boquete. The trail is 8 kilometers (5 mi) long and takes around five or six hours to hike. The surroundings are beautiful—the trail runs through forests and meadows, and is crisscrossed by the Río Caldera. Along the way, you get wonderful views of the Boquete valley.

Cerro Punta is about a kilometer higher in elevation than Boquete, so the hike from Boquete to Cerro Punta is uphill. Some people prefer to go from Cerro Punta to Boquete and take advantage of the downhill walk, while others favor hiking uphill to save their knees from the steep descent. In either case, it’s advised to hike the trail with a guide. Doing so will help you avoid making a wrong turn, as well as greatly improve your chance of spotting wildlife.

Hiking to the summit of the Barú Volcano is also popular, although it should be noted that this is a serious, all-day trek. The hike runs steadily uphill for 13.5 kilometers (8.5 mi), which usually takes 4-5 hours. Along the way, you pass through shady forests and sheep-filled meadows, and get wonderful views of the valley below. At the top you can see far into the distance; if the weather is clear, you can even see both the Pacific and Caribbean. The hike down typically takes 3-4 hours. Bring meals and snacks and lots of water—you don’t want to get hungry or dehydrated up here. Guides are also recommended for this hike.

A less strenuous walk that travelers can do is the Bajo Mono Loop. This 20-kilometer (12.5-mi) paved loop begins and ends north of Boquete. Rising above the town, the road passes through dense forests and gives panoramic views of the Boquete valley. Be careful, though, as cars share the road.

Insider tip:

The summit of the Baru Volcano is extremely cold with strong wind gusts. The hike operates rain or shine, unless of course there is a major weather even that shuts down the Volcan Baru National Park. The best time of year for this hike is December through April which is our driest season. The rest of the year there could be inclement weather during the hike. Prepare yourself and bring a heavy rain coat and waterproof equipment if you have it. Boquete is a small mountain town that pretty much lives in a perpetual spring, so don’t expect to find an REI to gear up nearby. For the most up-to-date weather forecast, Mountain Forecast has some great information about Volcano Baru.

Note: During the rainy season, the Volcan Baru National Park hours are open from 5:00 am to 1:00pm for your safety. At that time, the hike will take place early in the morning to get you back down before the afternoon rains.
