While lots of people will tell you not to travel to Greece outside of the summer months, November can still be a good time to visit.

If you’re considering Santorini, then I wrote a separate post about the island in November .

The average temperature is usually fairly mild, especially in early November. And that makes hiking, walking around towns and exploring all the archaeological sites much more pleasant.

I’ve been to a few different places in Greece this month, so here’s what you can expect if you’re visiting Greece in the shoulder season.

@greekislandbucketlist Come and see what Greece in November is like! Thinking of travelling to Greece in the off-season? Its warm enough to swim in the sea while the Christmas decorations are going up! Weather in Greece in November

The weather varies depending on where in the country you’re looking at. The further north you go the cooler the average high will be for the month.

The best way to check for the area you’re interested in is to use a website like Time and Date . You can put the exact location in the search box in the top right corner, and it will give you all the details.

Southern Greece and Islands

In the southern areas and islands, it’s a typical Mediterranean climate. For example, the mean temperature for Athens, Nafplio, Corinth, Mykonos and Naxos in November is 16°C/60.8°F . For Santorini, it’s 17°C/62.6°F

The high temperature for most of these places is 19°C/66.2°F on average. But at the beginning of the month it can definitely more. I think 2023 was above average for November temperatures overall.

If you’re going north to do a road trip near Ioannina then the mean temperature is 15°C/59°F, and you can expect a lot more rain than the places above.

In Thessaloniki, the average is around 11°C/51.8°F and even more northerly, Kastoria’s mean temperature is 8°C/46.4°C.

Examples of November weather in various parts of the country

Accommodation In November

Hotel availability in November will vary depending on where in the country you’re going.

On the Islands

Lots of the island hotels will close at the end of September or sometime in October. Some stay open into November, but for many, it’s only for the first week or two.

After that it’s most likely villas and self-catering apartments that are the biggest option. (Although some hotels do stay open on the islands all year round.)

On the Mainland

On the Greek mainland, there are fewer accommodation options around the Peloponnese than in the summer.

And it’s similar to the islands that apartments and houses are more readily available than hotels. But you will still find somewhere to book.

Across the board, in places that are generally thought of as summer tourism destinations, accommodation prices and hotel rates will be lower in November.

Bargains and Upgrades

Because these spots are quieter at the end of the season, you’re also more likely to get a hotel room upgrade. When I was in Santorini, I got upgraded to a suite that was a few levels above the room type I’d actually booked (which I’d been hoping for!).

Northern Areas

But northern Greece is coming into its winter tourist season, and there are lots of accommodation choices. They’ll also be priced accordingly, so don’t necessarily expect a bargain there.

Greek Islands in November

Depending on where you’re visiting and what you want to do, I agree that the low season might not be the best time of year for the islands.

The weather at the start of the month can be good enough for beach days and swimming.

visit greece in november

Naxos in November

visit greece in november

Epidaurus in November

And as I mentioned above, it can be one of the best months to see the historical sites. Both in terms of not being ridiculously hot and because fewer tourists are around.

But a lot of services, hotels and restaurants will have closed. The summer season ends around mid-October for most islands. For some, it’s even earlier. So you won’t be able to book very many activities and trips.

The things you might have looked forward to doing on particular islands might not be possible.

For example, if you’re heading to Mykonos in November, you won’t find a boat to take you over to Delos to see the ancient ruins . That’s a really popular and worthwhile trip from Mykonos, so it’s a shame to miss it.

I visited Santorini in November; it was quite a good time to go. The weather was mixed, but there were lots of good days.

It was a mixture of warm and mild weather with some quite windy days. (Which is typical in the shoulder seasons and even in the summer).

And for the first half of the month, there were still iconic hotels, winery tours and some other activities up and running.

Tinos , Andros and Naxos can be some of the best Greek islands to visit in November if you enjoy hiking. You do need to expect changeable weather, but you could still have a good few days of walking.

visit greece in november

Andros in November

The locals still eat out in the winter months, so you’ll find restaurants that are open then, too.

Ionian Islands

I understand that Corfu in the Ionian Islands can be a good place in November. I haven’t been myself, but I know from living in the country you do just need to watch the weather.

Because it’s further north than the Cyclades, the weather can be cooler and more stormy by the autumn.

But they always say there’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothes. So if you’re up for wandering around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Corfu town, a bit of adverse weather won’t stop you.

🥾 See also these short hikes in Paros

There’s a buzz there all year because it has a fairly big local population over the winter, and everyone still needs to go about their normal day-to-day business.

And despite what you might know about Corfu, it’s actually got excellent hiking trails. I’m excited about getting out on them, and November isn’t a bad month to do that.

Again, you can experience comfortable weather for walking, so consider that if you’re a hiker.

The other islands in the Ionian Sea are best to visit when there’s warm weather. The beaches are glorious, and that’s their main attraction. So you want the best weather for those.

Crete’s a big island with a busy population all year round. It’s also one of the most southern islands, so it holds onto the warm temperatures as long as possible.

Again, the historical sites, including Chania town, are some of the best things to enjoy in November.

Mainland Greece

I was in the Peloponnese in November, and if that’s an option for you, don’t dismiss coming at this time of year if you’re hoping for decent weather conditions.

Further to the north, the weather can feel much more wintery, and snow is beginning to fall in the mountain regions.

Athens in November is generally mild but expect mixed weather with some cloudy and rainy days. There are plenty of tourist activities running and the hop-on, hop-off buses are available too.

The city is one of the best places to visit because, like other places, the main attractions don’t have the same crowds as at other times of the year. Central Athens is a more pleasant place to be in the autumn.

November hiking in the Athens’ suburbs

The evenings can get a bit chilly, especially when it’s windy. But in the daytime, it can be really enjoyable to be outside. And the water temperature is still much higher than in spring if you fancy a dip in the sea.

Peloponnese

There was a mix of good weather and rainy days during my time there. One day, in particular, there was a huge storm. I was eating lunch outside under a covered gazebo, and we all had to run inside out of the torrential rain and huge gusts of wind.

visit greece in november

Nafplio in November

But other days had clear blue skies, and I went swimming in the sea.

The town of Nafplion and the ancient sites between there and Corinth had far fewer crowds than when I was there in May. In that respect, it’s a great time to visit.

Some of the biggies like Ancient Corinth, Mycenae and the Ancient Theatre at Epidauraus are in this area. And it’s an ideal time to stroll around amongst ancient history at your own pace without the hoards.

Many restaurants, shops and activities in Nafplio town had already closed for the winter months. But it didn’t feel desolate, and there were still enough places open to enjoy.

Some of the bougainvillea was still blooming for pretty pictures, too.

One of the Peloponnese’s beautiful beaches in November

If you’re exploring Greece and heading up to the stunning monasteries of Meteora, it’s a good time to take one of the hiking tours. If you’re not into that, then you’ll still benefit from cooler temperature and fewer other visitors.

Zagorochoria

Zagorochoria is a collection of over forty villages in the Epirus region of northwest Greece. I intended to go there in November for a road trip around autumnal trees and picturesque stone houses and bridges.

In the end, it didn’t happen, and I had to stay in the Peloponnese longer than anticipated. But a road trip around the area in November is absolutely the perfect way to enjoy Greece at this time of year.

Ferries to the Islands

The ferry schedules are very much reduced after October. You’ll probably need to travel more slowly as there won’t be the same daily ferry connections you might find in the summer. That’s certainly true for the more remote islands.

A Note on Bad Weather

Something else to note is that ferries in November can be cancelled due to bad weather. They can experience cancellations when the wind’s high at any time of year, but it’s definitely more common in November than in the high season.

visit greece in november

Blue Star Ferries notice of ferry cancellations

Flights to the Islands

Like the ferries, fewer flights are operating in November. However, where they do run, the ticket prices are generally much lower than in peak season. And the flights aren’t generally cancelled because of the weather.

Do watch out, though, if you’re booked on a ferry that gets cancelled for the weather. Everyone will scramble to get a flight ticket, so act fast if you need to get back before the next ferry. The planes to Athens are on the small side with limited seats.

✈️ I use Skyscanner for all my flight bookings because you can see quickly and easily all the flights departing on a certain date.

Free and Reduced Entry to Archaeological Sites

November to March is the winter season for government-run museums, historical and archaeological sites. That means ticket prices are reduced during these months, so get your fill of ancient Greece!

Another thing that happens this season is free entry to these archaeological sites and museums on the first Sunday of each month.

Plan accordingly if you’re in the country the first weekend because the offer is popular for local families, too. Places like the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum in Athens can get quite busy.

Annual Events

Some events to look out for in November are:

Athens Marathon

If you visit Athens in November, be aware of the Athens Authentic Marathon taking place. You can check the details and dates on the official website. (And enter if you fancy giving it a go!)

Thessaloniki International Film Festival

If you’re a film buff, you might be interested in the film festival . The website has all the details in English for you to check out.

Ok, so Christmas in Greece is still in December. But you’ll definitely start to feel the Christmas spirit in November.

I couldn’t get my head around going to the beach and swimming in the sea and then coming back to a hotel with festive trees and Christmas decorations all over the place.

If you’re from Australia, I suppose it’s nothing new. But for me, it still seems odd!

Christmassy Events in Athens

In Athens, the Christmas lights are sometimes switched on in November with a big event in Syntagma Square. And the Christmas Factory at Technopolis also starts this month.

visit greece in november

What to Wear in Greece in November

Again this depends on where you’re going. For the north, bring winter clothes (not necessarily thermals). Jeans, jumpers, boots and a warm winter coat will see you through. (And wear layers if you’re going to be walking about.)

For Athens and the islands light trousers, jeans, short and long-sleeves tops, light jumpers and a denim or similar jacket are the types of things to bring.

I find it quite humid and muggy, too, and that can make the temperature feel higher. Bring your swimsuit as well as an umbrella!

More Ideas to Visit Greece in the Off-Season

If you’re unable or just don’t want to visit Greece in the summer season then here are some more ideas for off-season travel.

Here’s what Mykonos is like in the winter . Santorini in late April can be a great place to visit as well as in October . And these are my thoughts on Paros in fall/autumn .

Are you considering travelling to Greece in November?

Are you wondering if November is a good time to visit Greece? More than 20 million people visit Greece each year and while most make the trip for the long summer days and nights in the islands , there are dozens of different destinations to suit all tastes and they definitely don’t have to include swimming or summer. While Greece is a perfect all year destination, there is most often a misconception that the winter months are to be avoided. Let’s take this from the beginning and make a plan of what are the best places to see and do in November and the reasons why November is preferable. Also, we will discuss how to make time for some amazing events and festivals that take place in Greece in November.

A fine November day in Greece at 22 o C

What do you need to pack for Greece in November?

Contrary to popular belief, Greece is not a tropical destination where it never gets cold. So for your packing list, prepare for a cold autumn day with lots of layers and a jacket that can be used to protect you from rain and wind. The most adventurous can still put a swimsuit in there, just in case, and you may still find a lot of “winter swimmers” around the beaches. This is also a good thing to keep in mind if you want to visit thermal pools or if you are staying in hotels with heated pools. A scarf, beanie and gloves are great for those that are more sensitive to the cold, especially if you are primarily visiting destinations on a high altitude or northern cities in mainland Greece.

The islands are considerably warmer but can be hit hard by winds so come prepared.

What kind of traveller enjoys Greece in November?

November is neither a party animal favourite nor a sunbather one. It is a month that appeals to those that want to travel slow or fully immerse themselves in the culture and area. November in Greece is great for becoming acquainted with the Greek rhythm of everyday life, finding small tavernas and restaurants that are local favourites and visiting as many cultural sites and galleries as is possible. The weather tends to have the sweet melancholy of autumn, with colourful leaves and moody skies completing the picture.

Solo travellers will find it easier to find affordable accommodation and couples can get moments of privacy and solitude in destinations that are often heavily overcrowded. Just like travelling to Greece in October , you may find a population shift taking place between the islands and the mainland. People living in small and difficult to access islands over the winter period will make the move back to Athens or other cities, while those that call the islands home year round will prepare for the offseason and be considerably more relaxed.

Hikers, nature explorers and athletes will find a multitude of sport and fitness-related events taking place around Greece in November and be excited to explore destinations around the country without the heavy sun rays of the summer.

Families travelling to Greece in November may prefer the more well connected and easier destinations of Athens , Thessaloniki , Crete , Meteora , Rhodes and Nafplio . While these are only some of the many options, a bigger city or island ensures a smoother transportation schedule with fewer chances of delays and plenty of activities to keep young and old occupied even if the weather is unfavourable.

If you are set on swimming then you may find November a bit on the colder side. Interestingly, it isn’t the water so much but the outside temperature that keeps people off the beach. The average water temperature for Greece in November is around 19°C which is chilly but not freezing.

If you are looking for a quiet holiday, relaxation, peace, and time to reflect on life and its experiences, November is ideal. You will seldom be disturbed by other tourists, even in the most popular destinations and will come away with a completely different picture of Greece than what you get in the summer.

Where to travel to Greece in November?

Rhodes is the 4 th largest island in Greece and the largest of the Dodecanese complex . This is great for late autumn travel since the all-year population means that there are still frequent flights and activities and restaurants on the island will still be open even though greatly reduced compared to summer. In addition, Rhodes is often nicknamed the sunny island, boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In addition to convenient transport and warm temperatures, Rhodes simply has so much to offer its visitors. Its history goes back a long way and those interested can spend hours learning more about the geographical significance of this island in ancient times. The name may also be familiar as the place where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood, a towering statue depicting the god Helius (or sun) that stood at more than 30m high.

The medieval city of Rhodes is a must-see for visitors, which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its impressive architecture and the cultural significance and influences. Even better when it can be enjoyed during the offseason.

Other Islands

If you are after a longer holiday with multiple destinations or have been to Rhodes already (which by the way, is fiiine you should go again) then consider the top 5/well known Greek islands. Crete down south, Santorini that is an experience any day, Mykonos which will be a deserted paradise in comparison to its party summer clientele, and Naxos which is not a far way from Athens and has a great vibe for all kinds of travellers.

St Andrews Name Day – If you have Greek friends or are just very well informed, you might know that Greeks celebrate name days rather than birthdays (or did nevertheless before the western custom of birthdays became popular). Name days are celebrations on a saint’s feast day. Almost every person in Greece has a name day because most Greeks are baptized into the Orthodox church and thus carry a Christian name. The 30 th of November is a massive celebration around Greece and every household that has members that share this name. I wish I could break the stereotype but if you know one person with this name then chances are there at least a few cousins or relatives sharing it in their family. My family? Five Andrews/Andriana’s and counting!

17 th of November – This day is observed as a holiday around Greece in celebration of the student uprising of 1973. The uprising was in response to the dictatorial rule and military regime of the Colonels that started in 1967 and would last until 1974. Athens Polytechnic students went on strike on November 14 th which began to escalate in tension and lasted until November 17 th when the strike was broken by a tank crashing through the gates of the university. Approximately 40 people are said to have been wounded or fatally injured. Universities remain closed on this day and commemorative services take place as well as wreath-laying ceremonies. Protests take place every year and the downtown area of Athens from the Polytechnic till the United States Embassy is usually flooded with people singing slogans that were used during the original uprising, namely “Bread-Education-Freedom” and the national anthem. Due to increased social unrest, heavy police presence and tension between different groups the area is best to be avoided by visitors and tourists in the area.

21 st of November- This is one of the main and most important celebrations of the Orthodox Church that is known in Greece as “the entry of the Virgin Mary or “The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary” in the Catholic Church. This is a day that always falls within the Christmas fasting period, in which abstinence from dairy, meat, oil, wine and fish is encouraged. However, on the 21st of November, there is an exemption for fish and oil-eating. Some women with the name Maria, Despina, or Panagiota which are other names for the Virgin Mary, have a name celebration on this day. I say, only some because the 21st of November is often reserved for young “virgins” or unmarried women whereas the 15th of August (another day in celebration of the Virgin Mary ) is celebrated by married women. In case of doubt, the easiest thing if you know a lot of Maria’s or Mary’s is to simply ask if they are indeed celebrating!

Location Specific Events

Athens Classic Marathon – If you are a runner then you must be aware of the ultimate marathon race in the world, the classic Athens Marathon. This sport owes its name to the town of Marathon, from where Pheilippides, a Greek messenger, is said to have started running until reaching Athens, in order to announce the victorious result of the Battle of Marathon that took place in 490 BC. According to the story, Pheilippides ran more than 40 km and died from exhaustion soon after. The 38 th annual event always takes place in early November with thousands of participants from around the world.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival – This year marked the 60th International Film Festival in Thessaloniki that is one of the most established and popular events of the year. Events take place in the space of about 11 days in different cinemas and venues around the city with a focus on showcasing the work of “subversive filmmakers from all around the world”.

Thessaloniki Piano Festival – This is another beloved event that has been taking place in Thessaloniki since 2012 and has despite the harsh reality of the economic situation in the country, remained a successful event that attracts plenty of local and international visitors. More than 15 events take place within the space of 2 weeks that showcase a diverse pool of talent, spanning different genres and encourage artistic expression.

Amorgos Tourism Film Festival – Fancy an excuse for leaving the mainland or flying into the stunning island of Amorgos ? The annual Tourism Film Festival is a 4-day event packed with screenings that showcase the island of Amorgos and the Cyclades island complex in general, encourage cooperation and collaboration between the island and other film producers and visitors from Greece or internationally and celebrates artistic mediums and their contribution to societal problems like sustainability in tourism.

Chania Film Festival – If you are in Crete island in early November make your way to the charming port city of Chania that charms everyone with its romantic vibe and Venetian architecture. For more than a week, thousands of people come together to watch the best films from around the world. There are plenty of workshops, classes and exhibitions that take place around this time as well.

Nafplio Castle Run – Another relatively new event that has been picking up incredible support in its 6 th year running. Excuse the pun! This is a unique and challenging fitness event and the only one in the world where participants ascend a castle! Do not be fooled by the fact that this is only a 10km run, the race will challenge even the fittest athletes and will surely be a unique way of experiencing Palamidi castle and the views it gives of the city below. It is also a great excuse for an excursion in the beautiful Peloponnese peninsula!

Why visit greece in november.

Cliffside monasteries of Meteora in Central Greece

The weather in Greece in November is chilly although not cold. This means that you can still enjoy outdoor hikes, sail between islands, and do sightseeing tours on foot. Else, there are countless museums in the country where you can browse through some of the finest achievements of humanity. Below are a few reasons why this is a great time to vacation in Greece.

  • Great deals: November is a low tourist season in Greece. Look out for excellent discounts on airfares, hotels, and activities if your visit to the country falls at this time.
  • Less rush: The peak tourist season is over before November, which means you will have monuments and archeological sites practically for yourself.
  • Museum-hopping: Feeling a little too cold? Head for museums, of which the country has many, and travel back in time to the days of the ancient Greeks. November is an ideal time for museum-hopping in Greece as there are fewer crowds.
  • Magical Méteora: These stunning monasteries built atop hills and situated in a breathtaking landscape are best enjoyed while visiting Méteora at the beginning of the winter season.
  • Islands beckon: Swimming in the sea is not a good idea in November. Having said that, there is nothing stopping you from discovering the rich history and culture of islands like Rhodes, Crete, and Santorini. Please keep in mind that, with the onset of winter, you might have to wait longer for ferries to some islands.
  • Hikes and trails: The Samaria Gorge Trail, with its riverside paths and Byzantine ruins, can be a great option during November, especially since it takes less than a day. The switchbacks of Mount Athos offer yet another option for hiking enthusiasts during November. But please remember that women and beardless youths are not allowed in this area full of monastic retreats.
  • Food for thought: From meatballs and bean soups to spicy sausages dipped in sauce and stuffed cabbage leaves, November in Greece is the time to dig into the delicious winter dishes.

Greece in November provides one of the best opportunities to discover its archeological wonders since they are less crowded. Visit the monasteries of Metéora — perched on rocks amid cliffs and remnants of an ancient river — one of the most dramatic sights in Greece. See the world-famous monuments of Athens, like the Temple of Zeus, the Parthenon, and the Acropolis of Athens, which was the religious center of the city in ancient times.

Wander around the heart of the Unesco-listed Old Town of Rhodes Island and admire its centuries-old history. See the magnificent ruins of the ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Games began in 776 BC. While on a tour of Thessaloniki , find out why it is regarded as the cultural capital of Greece as you amble around its waterfront and explore the ruins dating back to the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. Then head for the island of Santorini , where you can hike to the top of an ancient volcano, swim in the warm waters of hot springs, and kick back on white-sand beaches. See the remarkably well-preserved remains of the Temple of Apollo on a Delphi tour and visit its archeological museum, home to masterpieces like the bronze statue of Eniochos, the charioteer of Delphi, which is one of the best bronze specimens from ancient Greece.

Greece in November combines popular historic sites with cool urban vibes. Although many think of this country as a summer paradise, November is an ideal time to discover its highlights, explore its rugged countryside and winding coastline and enjoy delicious cuisine. The location is right on the coast, offering fantastic views of the Aegean Sea. If I was God Poseidon, this is where I’d like my temple to be!

Yes, it might be too cold to swim, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beach! Athens is home to some stunning coastline, so take a walk or relax on the sand and soak up the autumn sun.

You can easily take the tram to reach the coast close to Athens, known as the Athens Riviera. For more information, have a look at this article about how to get around Athens .

Go to a performance, live music event or party

November is a great month to catch a show or performance in Athens. Even if the performance is in Greek, it’s still one of the best Athens experiences you can have. Or you can always look for some live music.

November is a good time to go shopping in Athens, as it’s less crowded, and there are often some good offers.

For clothes and shoes, the main shopping areas in the city centre include Ermou street and its maze of side streets. Kolonaki is the best area for designer and upmarket clothes, but you can also find cool items in Koukaki and Psiri .

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Yes, yes, yes, we all love Greece in the summer. The sexy feel of the sun on our backs, the aroma of grilled octopus in the air, the soothing sound of the waves, the music lingering in the air from the nearby bars. You get the picture. But have you ever thought of  visiting Greece in the fall ?

Let me give you  that  picture: wonderfully mild weather, not too hot, not too cold, calm waters that are still warm, crowd-free beaches, peace and quiet, no traffic, low-volume chit-chat at the  kafeneio  (coffeehouse), and the catch of the day at the one or two operating tavernas where all the locals gather and share their tales.

►  Visiting Greece? The Top Things to Know

If this sounds more like you, then  visit Greece in October, November and December (added bonus Greek Christmas!). You won’t regret it.

I always travel and swim during these three months and believe me this  quieter experience of Greece  is totally different to the summer. And although it saddens me to say, with global warming showing its teeth, more and more people are planning their holidays off season. And that’s great for two reasons: we’re burdening cities and towns less and we’re getting a more genuine experience of the places we visit.

That said, allow me to suggest the  best Greek islands to visit in November , the reasons why you should, and what to expect.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Kefalonia is undeniably one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, and the reason behind my view is that it combines so many different landscapes and beaches, it has managed to preserve its  traditional character , it is large and it is home to a large permanent population which means businesses are open all year round and there are many things to see and do.

Musts : Myrtos Beach, Xi beach, Melissani Cave, Robolla wine, and the food and local sweets.

Weather in November : Just right around 20 degrees Celsius (around 70 degrees F), mild temperatures overall in November, little rain, and sea water temps around the same at 20.6°C.

How to Get There : from Athens to Kefalonia Airport or directly from major European cities. ——Another option is to take the bus from Athens via  KTEL intercity services  which takes you to a ferry. You can also take the ferry from Kyllini near Patra.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Where do I even begin to describe Crete . In one word: blessed. The largest  Greek island is also the southernmost island so it has the  warmest weather  all year round. If there’s one place in Greece where you’ll definitely find what you’re dreaming of, Crete is it. The ultimate beaches for every taste, local traditions and music, luxury stays or all-inclusive resorts – if that’s your thing – mountain eco-retreats, tranquil villages by the sea. What more could you ask for. I always tell readers,  just do Crete . I’ve been there over and over again and still haven’t seen it all.

Aegina – Agistri

visit greece in november

A pair of underrated islands  very close to Athens , which I also recommend you visit if you’re in the Greek capital and are short of time. In addition to the local ways which are alive and well in Aegina thanks to its many permanent residents, many of them artists, a visit to the beautifully preserved ancient Temple of Aphaia is well worth it. Aegina has some really nice beaches with turquoise waters and life in the town is the closest you’ll get to genuine Greece. Make sure to visit neighboring Agistri too – a 15-minute boat ride. You can literally discover the whole island on foot.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Weather in November : Pleasant all year round. And thanks to both islands’ location near mainland Greece, they enjoy mild temperatures around 21-22°C or 71F with waters in the same range and bays protected from the winds.

How to Get There : From the port of Piraeus in under an hour by ferry or by high speed in 20 minutes. There are also regular day boats from Aegina to Agistri.

Musts:  The Temple of Aphaia which is thousands of years old, the medieval settlement in Paliochora, the monastery of Agios Nektarios, the healing waters in Souvala, try and buy the island’s famous nut the  Aegina pistachio ,  and  enjoy a meze  with some ouzo on the port.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Small and sweet, this Greek isle has a very  romantic vintage feel  to it, a handful of nice sandy beaches and secret coves, a beautiful seafront to enjoy lunch or dinner, and ideal for those of you who like doing everything  on foot or by bike . No need for a car here. Many permanent residents here to mainly because it’s minutes away from the mainland.

Weather in November : Poros enjoys mild temperatures, making it an ideal destination for exploring historic sites and taking leisurely strolls. Expect temperatures around 21-23°C (70F), warm water and a random shower.

How to Get There : By ferry from the port of Piraeus about ——or  by car   in an hour and 15 minutes and once  you get to Galatas on the mainland in the Peloponnese, a 10-minute ferry ride. You could always  choose a mini-cruise out of Athens to Poros , which also includes Hydra (Leonard Cohen’s favorite isle – he actually had a holiday home there) and Aegina  (see above) .

Musts:  Definitely visit  Love Bay,  hop   over to the mainland and visit the “Lemonodasos” (Lemon Tree Forest) and you’ll see (and smell) why it inspired poets and writers. Stroll through the well-preserved Hora, visit the monastery of Zoodochou Pigis (which means Lifegiving Source), and explore the site where a sanctuary to the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, once stood.

►  Swimming in Greece Fall or Winter: The Tips

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Syros, the  capital of Cyclades  islands complex, is a perfect escape in the fall and winter and during  Easter . It is one of the few islands together with Tinos that is home to a  large Catholic community . This is where  Markos Vamvakaris , the ‘father of the rebetiko’ or  Greek blues , was born and composed his songs. Syros today is a lively center of the arts, sports, music, animation and theater running dozens of cultural programs and festivals all year round and is very proud of its La Scala-inspired  grand theater. It was on this island where Greece’s first shipyard operated. Unlike its surrounding white-washed Cyclades isles like Tinos and Mykonos, Syros is very stately and this is due to its active role in the  1821 War of Independence  as well as to the wealth of its tradesmen. The lower part of Ermoupoli features a theater-like setting complete with magnificent mansions overlooking the harbor.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Weather in November : Syros also enjoys great weather in November with temps around 21-22°C (or 71F) and warm waters making it a great time to explore its culture and history.

How to Get There : You can reach Syros by ferry from the port of Piraeus (2 hours and 20 minutes) and from Rafina (about 2 hours).

Musts:  The lower part or Ermoupoli – the capital – and its splendid mansions overlooking the harbor and the upper part – Ano Syros – this is closer to the Greek islands you all know with narrow paths and a Medieval aura. The Apollo Theater, the Catholic St George’s Cathedral, the Church of Saint John, City Hall. Buy loukoumi and halvadopita sweets and San Michali cheese.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Another underrated Greek island home to some of the best preserved villages and architecture in the Cyclades is Tinos . Amazing beaches for every taste and weather condition, the  finest food  and wine in the Cyclades, lots of art. The island’s marble craft is  listed on UNESCO’s protected world heritage list , locally-made sweets to die for. Here too, there are both  Catholic and Orthodox  communities and dozens of chapels and monasteries.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Weather in November : The weather on Tinos is a bit  unpredictable . In the summer its winds are gusty but in the winter they die down. Temperatures in November are pleasant around 20°C or 70F and the waters from 15-20°C depending on the beach and time of day.

How to Get There : Travel to Tinos by ferry from Piraeus port – a 5-hour trip – or from Rafina about 1.50 minutes with a high-speed ferry or 4 hours with the regular ferry. You will need to drive or take the bus to Rafina which takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Musts : The Church of Panagia Evangelistria or “Megalocharis” (The Gift Giving), the villages of Pyrgos for its marble art, the village of Volax right out of a science fiction film, the catholic church in Ktikados, Kardiani and Isternia villages, Kechrvouni Monastery, the Museums of Tinian Artists (Panormos), the Marble Crafts Museum (Pyrgos), the Tsoklis contemporary art museum, Pachia Ammos and Agios Fokas beaches, ouzo at Panormos, the soft white cheese (hard to find, ask around), the food, and the “amygdalota” sweets from Halaris!

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Lefkada is a  low key island  with some of the country’s finest beaches and ideal for  sailing lovers. The special thing about Lefkada is that you can get there by car thanks a floating pontoon (bridge) which connects it to the Akarnania mainland. Cool!

Weather in November : Lefkada has nice weather in November and no winds, making it a great choice for sailing, swimming and outdoor activities.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

You will never get bored on Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades, with a strong year-round population and a vast history. Unlike the other Cyclades islands, Naxos’ landscape includes tall mountains and fertile valleys. That’s why it is famous for both its meats and dairy products, particularly its cheeses. It’s an ideal destination for history and mythology lovers. Zas Cave, for instance, where Zeus was said to have spent his childhood years, has been inhabited since the Neolithic era.

Weather in November : Due to its size and mountains, Naxos has some rain in November and is pretty cool at around 17-18C. However, the waters are generally cold in the summer too. So expect water temperatures to be around 15-17°C (59-64F). Again it depends on the beach too. Some are colder than others.

► 10 + 1 Perfect Places to Visit in Greece in Fall or Winter

How to Get There : By plane from Athens to Naxos airport, or by ferry from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina. The trip lasts about four hours and approximately 2.5 hours on a high-speed boat.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Musts:  visit the 8-meter-high Portara, the ancient marble gate on the side of the port; the village of  Apeiranthos , sit on the ‘’plateia” (main square) in Halki and enjoy village life in action. Take a stroll through the Venetian Castro overlooking the Chora. Learn more about the lemon-citrus liquor “kitron” at the Vallindras Distillery and museum, which has been distilling the liqueur since 1896. Swim   at one of its many perfect beaches with crystal clear waters and ultra-fine sand. Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, Agios Georgios are my favorites. Visit the Folk Museum   in Chora, and hike your way to the  lost kouros  – a large marble statue of a male youth dating back to the  6th and 7th centuries BC – the largest (10 meter-tall) is near the fishing village of Apollonas. Try and buy graviera (gruyere), afromyzithra, kopanisti and Arseniko cheeses, kitron, wine and potatoes.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is incredible and full of surprises. This Greek island is for the most part a protected breeding and nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta. Expect the most beautiful sandy beaches with welcoming waters and some great food. The island’s famous nightlife slows down in November.

Weather in November : The weather and waters on Zakynthos are warm and welcoming. Expect mild temperatures in November at around 18-19°C or 64-66F and the sea water is around the same particularly at Laganas beach. The warm temperatures are actually why the turtles breed here!

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

How to Get There : from Athens you could fly to Zakynthos Airport or directly from major European cities. Another option is to take the bus from Athens via  KTEL intercity services which takes you to a ferry. You can also take the ferry from Kyllini near Patra.

visit the  National Marine Park of Zakynthos  which spans from Cape Marathias to Gerakas, this is the Caretta caretta turtle nesting area.

Maria’s Tips for November Travel to Greece

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

So yes, November is a great time to visit Greece and to actually experience a very different, more relaxed and intimate type of holiday away from the mayhem of summer. However, I do want to give you some tips to make sure you make the best of your trip to Greece off season.

✓  First and foremost: there are fewer ferry services off-season, and traveling to smaller islands will need some extra planning ahead . However, the islands I mention above usually enjoy regular services due to the large number of permanent residents. In any case, check schedules and book ferry tickets in advance , as there might be limited availability.

✓  If you’re taking the ferry to the islands from Rafina have in mind to include the hour-longbus ride to the port from Athens which departs from the Pedion tou Areos Park every half hour.  Schedule here

✓  Many hotels and short-stays (Airbnbs) offer lower rates in November plus it’s much easier to find accommodation suitable to your needs.

✓  Visiting Greece in November gives you the chance to experience local life and culture. Mingle with the locals at restaurants, cafes and bars.

► Solo Female Traveler? Go to Greece

✓  Water activities like swimming and water sports may be limited, but you will definitely enjoy things like hiking, sightseeing, and exploring historic sites in cool weather.

Great Greek Islands to Visit in November

✓ Make sure to check the hours at sites, attractions, restaurants and businesses. Many have reduced hours or may be closed, so plan accordingly.

✓ Check for local festivals and events which only the locals know about, so ask.

✓  On the islands listed you will find ATMs and banks for currency exchange. It is a good idea to have credit card and some cash with you in any case. Sometimes the ATMs run out of money.

✓  Public transportation options, like buses and trains, are still available, but routes may be less frequent.

✓Make sure to ask the local about the beaches, where there will be no wind.

✓ Do pack layers, a light jacket, neckwear, and a hoodie for the evenings and early mornings.

✓ You won’t need reservations at most restaurants.

✓ Respect the local ways: Remember visiting the Greek islands off season is like visiting someone’s home, so be respectful of local ways customs and traditions.

Greece in November: A Whole Guide for Perfect Trip!

Greece has been a popular European tourist destination, known for its beaches and ancient history. Hundreds of historical and archaeological sites represent the country’s past in this location. The country is mostly mountainous and surrounded by water, especially the Ionian and Aegean seas. Just 169 of Greece’s more than 1400 islands, all with long coastlines and beaches, are inhabited. However, considering how crowded Greece in November is for budget travels, you should book your tickets and prepare your itinerary as soon as possible. Without further ado, make certain that you get the most out of it.

Since it’s the off-season, some offbeat tourists flock for budget travels, which is ideal if you want to visit the big historic sites without having to fight for a place. Prices, on the other hand, would have plummeted, resulting in fantastic bargains. Many restaurants and nightclubs will have their prices reduced this season, and airlines and ferries will operate on reduced schedules.

Greece Tourism in November

Greece Tourism in November

In November, sightseeing in Athens can be a joy (especially if you get lucky with warm sunny days), as there is plenty of elbow room at the top tourist attractions. A vibrant nightlife is restricted to Athens, Thessaloniki, and other major cities, though a few bars and possibly one or two clubs will remain open on the Greek islands of Ios, Mykonos, and Santorini. The Cyclades and Dodecanese, like Crete, will be a couple of degrees warmer than the mainland, with more sunny days, so now is a good time to visit the isles with a cultural emphasis (the beaches will be too chilly for sunbathing). Meteora is breathtaking, particularly now that the mountains have been dusted with the first snows of the season.

Weather & Temperature in Greece in November

Weather & Temperature in Greece in November

The weather in Greece isn’t yet too cold. Expect a mix of sunny days that range from mild to hot, with plenty of rain. Although the weather isn’t ideal, the crowds have dissipated, prices have dropped, and you can enjoy Greece like a local.

Expect cool weather in general, with the occasional warm day ideal for walking and sightseeing, and an average afternoon high of 66°F. November has a lot of cold, rainy days, and northern Greece (and even the Peloponnese) will be a lot wetter and cooler than normal. As a result, you’ll need to pack enough clothes. The mountain is 1,628 m (5,341 feet) tall. The beaches are about the cleanest and most beautiful in Greece with water of various shades of green and blue and sand of striking colors, even red and brown. Flights are the best way to travel there. Flights from Athens take an hour.

Low Tourism Season: Touring Advice for November

November is harvest season, and you can enjoy the great tastes of fresh fruit, organic vegetables, olives and freshly pressed olive oil at relatively low prices in the restaurants and cafés. The flavors, colors, ancient places, forests, ruins, and hillside vistas of Greece are more vivid in November.

Since tourism is low, the prices for hotel rooms declines to as little as 60% of the peak prices of July and August. So, you might plan on extended stays while the weather is mild and dine on Greece's more natural, healthier, and tastier cuisine with lots of seafood dishes.

There are no public holidays in November.

What to Wear in November

In southern Greece and the southern islands, a thick jacket or light coat is needed for comfort, but northern Greece and the mountains may get snowfall in November, so bring winter clothing for these places.

Shoes: Since it is rainier, wear sturdy shoes with good traction for the nature trails, the cobbled stone streets and archeological sites to prevent slips and wet feet.

Wetsuits: The average sea temperature is about 21°C (70°F) at most of Greece's beach highlights in November. This is suitable for swimming, but since the air temperature during the days might be cooler than the water, it might be a good idea to wear a wetsuit.

How Cold is it in Greece in November?

Greece in November. Weather chart for November in Greece.

Greece has four distinct seasons and November might be slightly cold, especially during the second half of the month. The mountains and the north of Greece may have significantly lower temperatures than the cities or the southern islands, such as Cyclades or Crete.

visit greece in november

Here’s an overview of what you can expect in different areas of Greece in November:

  • Athens and Southern Greece: The southern regions are generally milder and experience more sunshine. In Athens, you can expect average high temperatures of 18-20°C (64-68°F) and cooler nights with temperatures dropping to 10-12°C (50-54°F). Rainfall is minimal, but it’s always a possibility.
  • Crete: Crete enjoys relatively warm temperatures compared to the rest of Greece. Daytime highs can range from 18-22°C (64-72°F), with cooler evenings. Rainfall is still low, but it’s advisable to pack some waterproof gear.

  • The Greek Islands: The islands can have similar weather to the southern mainland, with average highs between 18-20°C (64-68°F). Ionian Island has a lot of rainfall.
  • Northern Greece (Thessaloniki): The northern regions are cooler, with average daytime highs around 14-16°C (57-61°F). Nights can be quite chilly, with temperatures dropping to 6-8°C (43-46°F). You’re more likely to experience rain in the north.

For your packing list for Greece , the best is to pack lots of layers and a warm jacket that can be used on many occasions and can protect you from rain and wind.

How to Dress Like the Locals

If you belong to the Western civilization then you probably dress the same as the Greeks. Greece is a modern Western country, so you can dress as you want. As a general rule that applies to both men and women you should bring along:

  • A good pair of jeans
  • Long-sleeve shirts/t-shirts/blouses
  • A good pair of walking/hiking shoes
  • A light rain jacket and a light jacket
  • A club/bar/dining out outfit

What to Wear in Athens in November

visit greece in november

Athens, is a large city, home to some of the most imposing and famous archaeological sites in the world such as the UNESCO Acropolis Hill.

Athens is also the capital city of Greece and the most important economic center of the country. Athenians are more or less dressed in a casual or a casual-chic style unless they have a business to attend to, in which case they are dressed in office attire .

As for pants, if you are not 100% sure that the meeting is super casual, then I would avoid wearing jeans. I would prefer some neutral-looking business pants that make you feel comfortable and warm enough in chilled weather.

A valley in Plaka, Anafiotika in Athens. Greece in November.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pack your favorite pair of jeans. Jeans in Greece are great most of the time especially if you are going out in the evening to a bar or a casual restaurant.

As for shoes in Athens, Clarks loafers and classic cut neutral boots are great for any work meeting. The secret for me when it comes to long meetings is comfort, class, and neutral attire.

Shopping in Athens

visit greece in november

Do you need clothes for a special occasion, no matter what it is? You can purchase whatever you want in Athens or any other big city in Greece. Here are some of the best shopping destinations in Athens:

  • Ermou Street : Ermou Street, a pedestrian shopping haven, is one of Athens’ main shopping thoroughfares. Lined with a mix of high-end boutiques, international chains, and local brands, it’s the perfect place for fashion enthusiasts.
  • Kolonaki : The affluent district of Kolonaki boasts upscale and posh boutiques and designer stores. It’s where you’ll find luxury brands and high-end fashion. It is in central Athens
  • Attika City Center : Located in the heart of Athens (Panepistimiou St, 3 minutes from Syntagma Sq, you get to a modern shopping center featuring a wide range of stores.

visit greece in november

4. Golden Hall and the Mall of Athens: They are both located in the affluent suburb of Maroussi, in the north of Athens. Massive shopping complexes offer a plethora of shops, restaurants, a cinema, and even an indoor ice-skating rink.

5. Glyfada : This Athens Riviera suburb is a shopping destination known for its high-quality clothing and accessories boutiques. Glyfada also offers a beautiful sea view, making it a delightful place to shop and relax. The best cafe by the sea in Glyfada is Caretta Athens .

Where to Stay in Central Athens

There is a large variety of hotels and apartments in Athens but this is a list of my favorite hotels:

What to Wear if You are Travelling the Greek Islands or Mainland

If you are a nature lover, a hiker, or you just love exploring nature and especially the steep mountains then Greece in November will be one of your favorite months.

I will never forget my first visit in late November to Parnassos Mt. near the Delphi archaeological site. It was all nice and sunny, but climbing towards the peak the weather changed all of a sudden to rain and cold and I was freezing. I did have a pair of gloves and a warm hat but I still remember the cold!

So, it is always best to be well-prepared for the unstable weather in the Greek mountains with a warm jacket.

visit greece in november

The islands can be warmer in general but can be hit hard by winds so go well-prepared with wind and a rain-proof jacket like the Marmot one.

The secret to getting dressed in colder weather is to have layers of clothes that you can easily add or remove depending on how warm or cold you feel.

Beaituful sunset over Hydra post

If you are thinking of visiting a ski resort in Greece , November may not be a good month as there will be no snow around to ski. However, hiking or just driving through the mountainous villages of Zagorochoria or Pelion will be a rewarding experience.

But you will need appropriate hiking boots to avoid unwanted slips or even injuries in areas where there are many leaves on slippery ground.

Do I Need Swimwear in Greece in November?

If you are already a winter swimmer, sure, bring it along. If you are expecting warm waters like it is during summer, then you will be greatly disappointed. The water is going to be cold. However, if you book a hotel with a swimming pool, it might be handy to pack one pair.

What Not to Wear

Evgenia owner of TRavel the Greek Way in snow Parnitha

  • Heavy Winter Gear: Avoid packing heavy winter coats and bulky sweaters. November in Greece isn’t that cold, so you won’t need these items. Focus on lighter layers that you can easily add or remove.
  • Summer Clothing: While you might encounter some mild, sunny days, it’s not the time for shorts, tank tops, or flip-flops. Save these for your summer beach vacation.
  • Overly Formal Attire: Greece is generally a relaxed and casual destination. Unless you have specific formal events or plans, leave your formal wear at home. Stick to smart-casual clothing that’s comfortable for sightseeing.

Revealed: The Hottest Greek Islands to Visit in November

What are the hottest Greek islands in November?

visit greece in november

What’s the weather like in Greece in November, and which is the hottest Greek island? A better question might be: should you even visit the Greek islands in November?

The tourist season in Greece usually ends in late October, at the end of half-term week. You can still enjoy a city break in Athens (it’s a lovely time for sightseeing) and you can grab some winter sun on the island of Cyprus (which is not strictly-speaking part of Greece) but you’ll struggle to find a direct flight to many of the islands. At best, you’ll need to change plans or switch to a ferry in Athens. It’s possible, just not convenient.

Once you get there, you may find some hotels, bars and restaurants have shut up shop for the winter, particularly on the smaller islands. However, Greece is beautiful in November and can still be warm and sunny – and some tour operators are talking about extending the autumn season into November as global temperatures rise, so watch this space.

If you want an easier winter-sun option, check out the Canary Islands in November . You can also find direct flights to Turkey in November .

Which Greek islands will be hottest?

Average temperature in November: 22ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 7 Flying time from UK: 5 hours

There’s one island that offers near guaranteed warm weather and long days of sunshine in November, and that’s Cyprus . It’s a longer flight than to most Greek islands, but worth it if you want fine weather. Even the sea is warm enough for a dip in November at 21ºC, while night time temperatures rarely dip below 12ºC.

Holiday recommendation: check out these places to stay in Cyprus .

Average temperature in November: 21ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 6 Flying time from UK: 6 hours (via Athens)

Karpathos lies between Rhodes and Crete in the Dodecanese. It’s a long way south and enjoys lovely warm sunny weather in November, particularly the first half of the month when it’s possible to sunbathe on the beaches and swim in the sea. This is a charming island with a rugged interior where you’ll experience the real character and hospitality of the Greek people.

Where to stay: find the best hotels and apartments in Karpathos .

Average temperature in November: 19ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 6 Flying time from UK: 4 hours

Kos is one of the most southerly Greek islands, close to the Aegean coast of Turkey, and is among the warmest in November. It’s won’t be hot, but six hours of daily sunshine will feel wonderful, and sea temperature is 20ºC. There’s only a small chance of rain towards the end of the month, but this is a good time of year to discover the markets and historical sites of Kos Town.

Holiday recommendation: the luxury all-inclusive IKOS Aria is great value but will have closed for the winter by the start of November.

Average temperature in November: 20ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 6 Flying time from UK: 4 hours

Crete is the largest Greek island and has some of the best winter weather. You can be eating lunch under a blazing November sun while gazing up at snow-capped mountains. It’s also a fabulous time for hiking – don’t miss the dramatic Samaria Gorge. Expect 20ºC temperatures, falling to 13ºC at night with a chance of rain on 7-8 days. The sea will be 20ºC, fine for a quick dip.

Holiday recommendation: these  boutique hotels  and  stylish houses for rent .

Average temperature in November: 18ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 4 Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes

Corfu is further north than most islands and in the Ionian Sea, rather than the Aegean. It’s a little cooler, as a result, and not the warmest destination in November. However, it’s a great time of year to visit monasteries, palaces, museums and churches. Rain is possible, so pack a brolly.

Holiday recommendation: these villas in north-east Corfu are lovely.

Average temperature in November: 19ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 5 Flying time from UK: 4 hours 15 minutes

Santorini is scorching in summer, and packed with tourists. Visit in November and you’ll appreciate the pretty villages and rugged volcanic countryside. There’s less chance of rain than in Corfu, and the sea temperature is around 19ºC, not freezing.

Holiday recommendation:  Santorini boutique hotels

Average temperature in November: 17ºC Hours of daily sunshine: 5 Flying time from UK: 3 hours 15 minutes to Thessaloniki

Halkidiki on the Greek mainland is a wonderful region for exploring. It has excellent sandy beaches, though the sea temperature will be on the chilly side for swimming. Night time temperatures can drop below 10ºC so you’ll need to pack a few layers. There are flights throughout winter to Thessaloniki, the second city of Greece.

Holiday recommendation: stay at IKOS Olivia or IKOS Oceania , both good-value luxury all-inclusive resorts.

For people wanting some exercise while in Athens, heading to Mount Lycabettus might be worth it. Here, visitors to the ancient city can experience the highest point in Central Athens, at a staggering 277 meters above the sea.

Mount Lycabettus has a rich history, according to myths : the mountain was formed when the goddess Athena was carrying a huge stone from the Pallene peninsula to the spot of the Acropolis, but she dropped it when the raven told her bad news.

Last but not least, follow proper bathroom etiquette and don't flush toilet paper, which can clog the older sewage systems.
