I'm the first to admit that I haven't always been a great packer . Not only did I live in constant fear of having to pay extra for an overweight bag, but I always arrived to the airport or train station with a sneaking suspicion that I left something really important behind. But that all changed when I landed a job where I was required to travel several times a month. Whether it was a two-day trip or a week long stay, I made it my mission to pack like a pro , which not only means being organized but also being prepared for any inconveniences I might face along the way.

I'm pleased to report that I not only accomplished that, but I also discovered some must-have travel essentials that everyone should pack. Whether you're travelling via plane, train, or car, I rounded up all of the Amazon travel essentials that you should definitely add to your packing list.

From a toiletry bag that RHOBH star Kyle Richards never travels without to depuffing under eye patches and a portable phone charger that doesn't require any cords, keep reading for the 15 best travel essentials that are always on my packing list, from someone who used to travel for a living.

BAGSMART Travel Jewelry Organizer

Tossing all of your jewelry into a bag won't just make it hard to find what you're looking for but it will make everything tangled. This folding jewelry organizer solves the problem, with designated spaces for necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings. And since it's flat, it doesn't take up much space. It comes in 11 colors and two sizes.

Himawari Laptop Backpack

While cute, carrying heavy shoulder bags are uncomfortable and painful, which is why I opt for a spacious backpack. This waterproof one has a padded laptop sleeve, plenty of pockets, and adjustable straps. Not to mention, it comes in so many cute colorways.

KS2 Music / Science: How string instruments make sound

BBC Teach > Primary Resources > Science KS2 / Music KS2 > House of Sound

Video summary

Inspired by Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Fran Scott and Greg Foot set about finding out all about string instruments and how they work and make such different sounds.

They look inside a piano and see long, thick strings that make low notes, and short, thin strings that make high notes.

Using a slow motion camera, they film the strings of a cello vibrating and point out that thick strings vibrate more slowly than thin ones and that this explains the difference in their pitch.

Thick strings give a low pitch, thin strings give a high pitch. The tightness or tension of a string is also important.

The tighter the string, the higher the pitch. The less tight a string, the lower the pitch.

Using 3D animation, Greg explains how the sound a string makes is amplified by an instrument like the violin.

Fran shows us how it is easy to make a guitar out of an old cardboard box and some elastic bands.

This clips is from the series House of Sound.

Teacher Notes

Elastic bands are a great way for children to see how length, thickness and tension of strings are responsible for the notes that are made.

These can then be used to make the guitar described in the clip.

By bringing a violin into the classroom, teachers can talk through how the string vibrates, the bridge vibrates, the sound box vibrates and the air in and around the sound box vibrates, forming sound waves.

Pupils can also learn how the violinist’s fingers are used to ‘stop’ the strings and make them longer or shorter.

This clip will be relevant for teaching Science or Music in primary schools at Key Stage Two or Second Level (Scotland).

More than a decade after a stroke, Randy Travis sings again, courtesy of AI

By Lee Cowan

May 5, 2024 / 9:10 AM EDT / CBS News

Even if you're not into country, you can't help but bathe in the baritone that is Randy Travis. His voice goes down like whisky – always has, ever since his first album, "Storms of Life," in 1986.  "I thought if we sold 40,000 copies they might let us make a second record." said producer Kyle Lehning.

They ended up selling four million . "So, I'm a genius!" Lehning laughed.

Randy Travis and that voice helped build Warner Music Nashville into what it is today. "How do you describe the thing that just hits you in the center of your chest and unconsciously makes you feel full, and familiar, and known?" said Cris Lacy, the label's co-chair and co-president. "How do you describe something like that?"

His was a God-given talent … and then, fate took it all away.

In 2013 Travis suffered a massive stroke . He was given just a 2% chance of survival. "I thought we were going to lose him," said Lehning.

Lacy said, "It felt like it could be the end of an era."

Besides the paralysis, the area of his brain that controls speech and language was hit the hardest. Randy's wife, Mary, said, "Music is what he's made of. Music is his heart, it's his soul."

Mary does most of the talking these days. She said Randy know what he wants to say, but it just doesn't come out.

Asked if he'd made peace with that, Randy replied, "Yep. Yep."

Three years after his stroke, with Mary at his side, Travis was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and gave "Amazing Grace" new meaning . There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum 2016 Medallion Ceremony - Show

In his absence, though, he's heard a lot of AI-generated fakes of his voice. A simple Google search brings up sites that promise to covert anyone's vocal into a Randy Travis sound-alike. "It doesn't sound good, and it doesn't sound real, because it's not," said Lacy.

And that got his record label to thinking. Lacy said, "We started with this concept of, what would AI for good look like for us? And the first thing that came to mind was, we would give Randy Travis his voice back."

There were more than a few skeptics – Kyle Lehning, for one. "It sounded like a parlor trick or something," he said.

But Lehning (with Randy's blessing) decided to try. He and Warner Music started by pulling 42 Randy Travis tracks from the vault, like the original recording of his hit "1982." And then, they stripped away the music, leaving only the vocal.

That was half the recipe. The other half needed to be provided by a donated, or "surrogate," voice. In this case, that voice came from country music singer James DuPre.

james-dupre-mary-travis-kyle-lehning-randy-travis.jpg

The AI program – the "secret sauce" – takes Travis' voice and overlays it on top of DuPre's singing. It's hardly an exact science.  "It's not about how it sounds; it's about how it feels ," Lehning said.

And that is not something a computer can figure out. "Not yet!" Lehning laughed.

He knows Travis' voice almost better than Randy does; they've worked together for 40 years.  This time, though, the task was to take a computer-generated voice and give it Randy's country heart.  "Him being here and him being able to be a vital part of the decision-making process makes all the difference to me," said Lehning.

secret-sauce.jpg

In the end, they landed on something they felt worthy of a voice no one but those who knew him best could replicate.

According to Lacy, "It's Randy Travis. Randy's on the other side of the microphone. It's still his vocal. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to make music, and to deprive him of that, if he still wants to do that, that's unconscionable to me."

Two months ago, Warner Music gathered a small circle of fellow musicians into a recording studio. Randy sat with a Cheshire Cat's grin, and then they hit "play."

Listen to Randy Travis' "Where That Came From":

The reaction to his first new song in more than a decade was a mix of joy and wonder.

For his wife, tears. For Randy's country friends, like Grammy-winning superstar Carrie Underwood, there was confusion. ("How? How? How?!? ") For Cole Swindell, who just won three ACM Awards, it reminded him of why he became a country singer in the first place. ("For you all to let me hear it, that means a lot. Damn, I'm glad to hear you sing!") And veteran country star Clay Walker was simply over the moon.

carrie-underwood-randy-travis.jpg

Even Randy's own family hadn't heard it until two weeks ago.

It was perfection ... with a caveat.  "We don't exactly know how to get here again," said Cris Lacy.

The second song they're working on is proving a harder nut to crack. There's still work to be done, and a lot of questions to answer about what this all means going forward.

But revel in this: After a decade-long absence, Randy Travis is back on the radio. His post-stroke debut song, "Where That Came From," was released this past week.

kyle-lehning-randy-travis.jpg

For Randy, it's not just a single, it's a victory. And as Mary says, "It's a life inspiration. Speak kindly, love fully, live completely, and leave the rest to God."

Sounds like there's a song in there somewhere. We can only hope.

How to Prevent and Treat Back Acne

used travel mandolin

Unlike a pimple on your face, which makes itself apparent the moment you look in the mirror, acne on your shoulders or back can be sneaky — revealing itself when you’re  lathering up in the shower or changing your clothes. Treating it can be challenging for the same reasons. How do you apply a pimple patch to a blemish that you can’t see and can barely reach? Some of the same ingredients, methods, and even products used to treat facial acne work for back acne but with some crucial adjustments.

We spoke to dermatologists to determine the safest and most effective strategies for preventing and treating body acne (defined as acne that appears on the back, chest, stomach, or buttocks), so you can bear your shoulders — and anything else — with confidence.

Lifestyle Interventions

1. pinpoint your personal acne triggers..

Around 50 percent of people with facial acne have acne on their chest and back, too, according to the National Library of Medicine . The pimples often stem from the same cause.

Hormones play a significant role, explains Dr. Dendy Engelman, a dermatologist at Shafer Clinic in New York City. During puberty, an uptick in androgens prompts the sebaceous glands to produce excess oil. Hormonal imbalances in adulthood, particularly those associated with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome ( PCOS ) or adrenal disorders, can also influence body-acne development. “Hormones stimulate our oil glands, and how our oil glands respond to hormones is largely influenced by our genetics,” says Dr. Kiran Mian , medical and aesthetic dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery in New York City. This is why some people with oily skin tend to be more acne prone than others.

Finally, while poor hygiene affects all forms of acne, it can be especially triggering for body acne because the cleanliness of your clothing, linens, and towels — not just your skin — has an impact. Neglecting to wash your face or bathe, wearing sweaty clothes, or infrequently changing your sheets can make body acne worse. People who exercise often are often more prone to back acne because sweating excessively creates a warm, moist environment conducive to bacterial growth, says Dr. Ramtin Kassir , founder of Kassir Plastic Surgery in New York and Inside Beauty .

2. Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing.

The tighter your clothes are while you’re at spin class, the more likely you are to sweat — and then sit in that sweat. Choosing looser garments made from breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking synthetic materials like polyester or nylon makes a significant difference.

You may also want to consider wearing moisture-wicking undershirts or sports bras during workouts to keep your back dry and reduce the risk of breakouts. Staff writer Tembe Denton-Hurst tested three of the sports bras recommended to the Strategist by fitness pros and found that nylon, polyester, and Lycra options worked best for wicking away sweat. A favorite of hers is Girlfriend Collective ’s Paloma bra, made out of recycled polyester and spandex. She owns at least five.

Girlfriend Collective Paloma Bra

3. Do the laundry more often.

Dr. Engelman says you should never reuse towels and should wash your sheets on the highest temperature setting every one to two weeks to avoid bacteria build up. (Strategist writer Dominique Pariso’s aesthetician recommends changing your pillowcase even more frequently; sleep on it once, flip it over the next night, and put on a new one on night three.) Make sure to launder or switch out your pajamas every one to two weeks, too. If you have clothing items you often rewear without washing — like a bra — try to break the habit. Wear bras and T-shirts no more than twice before washing.

Another skin-saving laundry tip: Eliminate fabric softener and dryer sheets from your routine. These products can add a film to textiles, and when that film gets on your bedding or clothing, it can clog your pores.

4. Shower with antibacterial soap.

If you exercise a lot and also have back acne, Dr. Karan Lal , a double board-certified adult and pediatric dermatologist with Affiliated Dermatology in Arizona, suggests using an antibacterial cleanser like Panoxyl’s Acne Foaming Wash immediately after your workouts to reduce bacteria on the skin and prevent inflammation. “Don’t wait, because back acne can lead to significant scarring , which is very hard to treat,” he says.

(In the past, the Strategist has also recommended Panoxyl for butt acne , another form of body acne. Our beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton has used it to get rid of a “cystic zit about the size of a small blueberry” in just a few days with no irritation.)

PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash With 10 Percent Benzoyl Peroxide

5. Wear your hair up.

If you have long hair, be sure to tie it up while exercising or even just while taking a walk on a hot day, says dermatologist Marisa Garshick , a board-certified dermatologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in New York. “During an intense sweat session, some of the oils and buildup in the scalp can be transferred to the back and contribute to additional breakouts.” Be sure to wash your hair as soon as you feel an oil buildup. When applying conditioner, wash all of the product out of your hair and then wash your back because residue can build up as the conditioner drips down onto your skin. “This leads to clogged pores,” says Dr. Nazanin Saedi , board-certified dermatologist at Plymouth Dermatology in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania.

Skin-care Treatments

1.use products containing salicylic acid..

Salicylic acid helps to unclog pores without causing irritation, and it’s a great option for those with sensitive skin. It’s one of the active ingredients in Medik8’s Press & Clear , an exfoliating toner with beta-hydroxy acid ( BHA ) and tranexamic acid, which Dr. Garshick recommends. Press & Clear is technically for your face, but it’s perfectly fine to use it on the rest of your body too. Pour the product onto a cotton pad and do your best to apply it to the affected areas, allowing it to dry before putting on your clothes or using an additional spot treatment.

Medik8 Press & Clear Clarifying Daily Facial Exfoliant

2. Exfoliate with polyhydroxy acids (PHAs).

PHAs are chemical exfoliants that assist in removing dead surface-skin cells (which lead to bacne) and help your skin texture become smoother over time. Dr. Garshick likes the Press & Glow Daily Exfoliating PHA Tonic with Enzyme Activator from Medik8 as well. PHA is a gentler option for those with sensitive skin; those on the oilier side may be better suited to a product containing BHA. You’ll want to apply this after a shower (and using body wash) on dry skin.

Medik8 Press & Glow Daily Exfoliating PHA Tonic with Enzyme Activator

Avoid physical exfoliants, like beaded scrubs and loofahs. “It is so tempting to ‘scratch off’ back acne, but any sort of physical exfoliant has the likelihood of causing further irritation and making back acne worse,” warns Dr. Saedi.

3. Apply a retinol to help reduce inflammation.

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and a favorite of Dr. Kassir. It quickly heals acne and soothes inflammation anywhere on the body, and its exfoliating properties help fade acne scars and hyperpigmentation while regulating oil production. Consistent use of retinol, alongside gentle cleansing and moisturization, promotes clearer and smoother skin on the back. One that I recommend is Soft Services’ Software Update Performance Retinol Serum . This overnight treatment serum contains 0.25% pure retinol and 5% niacinamide, which also helps reduce inflammation.

4. Switch to a lightweight, noncomedogenic sunscreen.

When it comes to sun protection , look for soothing ingredients that won’t irritate your skin. Dr. Mian suggests the Sheer Mineral Sensitive Spray by Seaweed Bath Co. ; it’s lightweight, features broad-spectrum protection, and includes algae, aloe, and shea butter. Studies have also shown that opting for a noncomedogenic sunscreen (that is, one that doesn’t contain pore-clogging ingredients) helps acne-prone skin.

If your bacne doesn’t clear or improve after ten weeks of lifestyle changes and over-the-counter treatments, or if it’s painful, see a dermatologist. A doctor can examine your skin and prescribe creams or oral medicine to help, including hormonal birth control, antibiotics, and oral isotretinoin, which clears pores by reducing the amount of oil that skin cells produce.

A dermatologist might also recommend medical-grade chemical peels, laser treatments, or steroid injections to target bacne and improve scarring.

Use eSIM while traveling internationally with your iPad

Learn about the options and benefits of using eSIM while traveling abroad.

Your existing carrier might include international roaming on select data plans without additional fees. Alternatively, your carrier might offer affordable travel passes or plans that you can purchase ahead of time to use at your destination. International roaming with an eSIM works the same as roaming with a physical SIM.

Many carriers offer data plan options that you can purchase directly on your iPad while traveling . To do this, go to Settings > Cellular Data > Find a New Plan to see available plans in your location. Carriers offer plans that differ by the amount of data and duration. You can also purchase a plan before you travel.

Carriers also offer prepaid data plan options that you can purchase from the carriers' websites or apps before you arrive, or in person after arrival, through a carrier kiosk at the airport, carrier store, or other location. Depending on local regulations, you might be asked to show identification (like your passport) to purchase. Check with individual carriers for details.

In addition to purchasing a prepaid eSIM plan, you might wish to get a postpaid account if you plan to be in another place for an extended time. Carriers around the world that support eSIM offer postpaid plans. Depending on the country or region, you might need proof of local residency, an established local bank account, or credit card.

Find wireless carriers and worldwide service providers that offer eSIM service on iPad .

1 Your iPad is subject to your wireless service provider’s policies, which may include restrictions on transferring a data plan. Contact your carrier for more details. If you aren't sure which carrier to call, go to Settings > Carrier on your iPad.

I Switched to Using eSIMs for Roaming When I Travel. You Should, Too

Traveling overseas this summer? You're going to want to read this first.

used travel mandolin

Want to carefully manage and minimize roaming charges? An eSIM could be ideal.

Back in 2010, I took a backpacking trip around Indonesia for two months. I didn't travel with a mobile phone. All I had was my trusty Lonely Planet guidebook for recommendations, and the occasional stop at an internet cafe to email location updates to my parents.

Now, in 2024, I can't fathom how I managed to travel without the internet constantly at my fingertips. Roaming while I'm overseas is non-negotiable -- and if I listed the reasons why, I'd be here all day. But roaming, if you're not careful, can also get expensive.

No matter where you're coming from or where you're traveling to, ensuring that you have internet access without running up a scary bill is a travel essential , and something you should ideally look into before you leave on your trip.

Carriers know how important it is for you to stay connected while you're traveling, and most have some kind of roaming deal you can take advantage of. But what happens when your network's roaming offering doesn't meet your data requirements for your destination, or is just too expensive?

Turns out, there's a very simple, practical solution: the eSIM. It's an electronic form of a SIM card embedded into your phone, which allows you to switch between carriers and data plans without the faff of removing and replacing physical SIM cards. The result is that you can have several SIM cards associated with your phone at once, allowing you to easily switch between plans and carriers as you travel.

In the past I'd opted for a Mi-Fi device equipped with a local pay-as-you-go SIM card when I touched down in a new country. This let me keep using my phone number and ensured I had internet access when I was out and about during the day. It's a fiddly solution, though, which usually involves finding somewhere to buy a SIM card immediately after getting off a long flight, and then remembering to charge the Mi-Fi every night.

I turned to eSIM as a last resort, but I won't be going back. I'm based in the UK, and my operator GiffGaff only allows limited roaming in select European countries. While planning a trip to the US and Canada last year, I was once again about to reach for my trusty Mi-Fi when I remembered something I'd heard about eSIM roaming operators.

From attending mobile phone events over the years, I had a vague understanding of eSIM technology, but I'd never considered using it personally for travel before this trip. It's not unusual to have a lack of awareness about how eSIM technology could benefit you while traveling. According to research due to be published this month by tech analysis firm CCS Insight, only 37% of Americans have heard of eSIM and only 8% have used an eSIM roaming provider.

One of the biggest challenges for eSIM providers is that most people are still unaware that eSIM exists as an option for them, says CCS Insight Director Kester Mann. Even if they have heard of it, less technically savvy customers may be put off by the installation instructions. Plus, it's often another thing to add to a long prevacation to-do list (although you can also do it when you arrive).

Another obstacle is that a lot of the names in eSIM game are new, said Mann. "People perhaps are a little bit nervous around signing up to the company they haven't heard of, or one that perhaps hasn't got an established reputation."

How I used Airalo's eSIM for traveling

There are a number of roaming eSIM providers that you can use, all offering competitive rates on data bundles, and different benefits across different regions. There's scope for many more providers to pop up in the near future, but for now some of the biggest names include Airhub, EasySim, Holafly and Airalo.

iPhone showing instructions in Airalo app

All the instructions you need can be found in Airalo's app.

In my research I couldn't find much to separate them and decided to take a chance on Airalo due to the diverse range of countries it supported. Installing an eSIM and getting it up and running isn't an entirely frictionless process, but by carefully following Airalo's in-app step-by-step instructions, I got it right the first time.

Each country requires a different eSIM, and you can have multiple eSIMs installed on your phone at once. After you've installed your first eSIM, adding more is pretty intuitive -- everything can be done from within the Airalo app.

For a trip at the end of 2023, I activated two eSIMs, one for the US and one for Canada, buying 20GB of data for $42 and 3GB of data for $15 respectively. I was pleased to find when I returned to Canada this year that I could simply reactivate the eSIM I'd installed and upload more pay as you go credit to see me through my trip.

As I landed in Canada from the US, I switched my primary data plan to my preinstalled Canada eSIM in my iPhone settings and I was good to go immediately. It was so frictionless that I even decided to plump for eSIM on my trip to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress in March. My UK plan allows me to use 5GB of data while roaming in Spain, but for an intense week at a conference I knew this wouldn't be enough. Instead I spent $12 on a 10GB eSIM, and even though I had to top this up during the week, it remained a bargain.

Like me, most people who try eSIM roaming have a positive experience, says Mann. But he advises people to do their research and compare costs with their domestic provider before they head off on vacation to ensure it makes sense for them. Opting for eSIM might be especially good if you're traveling to "more far-flung destinations that aren't typically covered in operators' roaming packages," he adds.

Which phones have eSIM capability?

Another key thing to bear in mind if you're considering an eSIM for roaming is to check whether it's available on your phone. Not all phones are currently eSIM-compatible, but if you have an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or any post-2019 Apple phone, you'll be able to take advantage of the technology. Some Samsung, Motorola and Google phones also have eSIM compatibility, but you'll have to look up your model individually if you're not sure.

Something I discovered on my eSIM journey so far is that it's a fairly low-stakes technology to experiment with. It's affordable, flexible and temporary. If I find a better deal on another provider later, it'll be easy for me to switch.

The market is booming right now, with about 700 million people in the world owning eSIM-compatible devices and as many as 10% of people in some countries purchasing an eSIM before they travel, according to CCS Insight. If you're traveling abroad this summer, whether it be to Europe, Asia or just over the border to Mexico or Canada, why not join us?

New iPad ad hit a nerve after instruments seen being crushed

by JAMEL VALENCIA | The National Desk

In this image taken from a video advertisement, a hydraulic press crushes an array of creative instruments .The newly-released ad promoting Apple's new iPad Pro has struck quite a nerve online. (Apple via AP)

WASHINGTON (TND) — Destroying instruments that artists and consumers have used for years and continue to do so did not sit well with viewers who saw Apple's latest commercial.

The tech company released its newest iPad ad this week, showing a hydraulic press crushing items - from a trumpet, piano, a chess board, sculptures, record players and arcade games.

The song, "All I Ever Need Is You" by Sonny and Cher is used as the ad's soundtrack.

A new iPad Pro is revealed once the heavy machinery completes destroying the creative instruments.

"The most powerful iPad ever is also the thinnest," says the narrator at the end of the commercial.

Critics called out Apple for its advertisement some calling it "tone deaf."

Apple CEO Tim Cook received backlash when he posted the posted the ad online on Tuesday.

"As a “f--- you” to @tim_cook and that atrocious iPad ad, here’s a picture of my son in front of the old used piano I bought before he was born, so he’d know the joy of growing up in a house with a piece of furniture you could play music on," a post read.

Jordan Peterson, known as a conservative author, posted "Well, this is pretty much the most accidentally true ad ever @tim_cook."

Vann Graves, executive director of the Virginia Commonwealth University's Brandcenter, pointed to Apple’s famous 1984 ad introducing the Macintosh computer, which he said focused more on uplifting creativity and thinking outside of the box as a unique individual. In contrast, Graves added, “this (new iPad) commercial says, ‘No, we’re going to take all the creativity in the world and use a hydraulic press to push it down into one device that everyone uses.’"

The Cupertino, California-based company unveiled its latest generation of iPad Pros and Airs earlier this week in a showcase that lauded new features for both lines. The Pro sports a new thinner design, a new M4 processor for added processing power, slightly upgraded storage and incorporates dual OLED panels for a brighter, crisper display.

Apple is trying to juice demand for iPads after its sales of the tablets plunged 17% from last year during the January-March period. After its 2010 debut helped redefine the tablet market, the iPad has become a minor contributor to Apple’s success. It currently accounts for just 6% of the company’s sales.

I am thinking of modifying a mandolin to make a traveller. ideas: 1. Just saw off both sides in a straight line, straighten the surplus sides or just use some thin plywood strips and glue them back. 2. Bend the sides in and cut off the overhanging top and bottom. needs a way of straightening the bottom though. 3. Making a foldable mandolin with a hinge where the neck meets the body. Secured with a wingnut or a clamping latch. 4. Removable neck. Connected with just to steelrods going into two steel tubes and held on by string tension 5. Removable neck, held with two through bolts with wing nuts. Or a tap and one bolt. Has anyone done such a (crazy) thing ?

The Folks at Martin Guitar have done such a (crazy?) thing, maybe 15 years ago. https://reverb.com/item/564124-marti...acker-mandolin The Backpacker mandolin didn't sell well because of less-than-wonderful sound, and mandolins are fairly portable anyway. But they are around. I'd suspect that sawing off body parts will give a sound not much different from the Martin's.

Well, just glue a neck and fingerboard to a stick plus tailpiece and bridge, add a pickup and your phone, and you’ve got it.

Stoneman travel mandolins seem to be a lot like what you're talking about; of course, you forego the pleasure of sawing up an existing instrument! This 2011 thread discusses customizing one, and evaluates its sound etc.

I think you have to be clear what the criteria for a "travel mandolin" is. If you just mean smaller, there are many available options. If you just mean not so valuable that you won't get agitated if the mandolin is damaged in traveling, there are other options. If I put so much effort in making an object, as you describe, I would be very agitated if it was damaged in travel!

BTW, I used to put my F-12 in my soft full-size rucksack and take it everywhere - hiking, camping, tree-climbing. Never hurt it a bit, and was always glad to have a decent-sounding instrument whenever and wherever I stopped to play.

I have one of these, called a Travolin. I've taken it backpacking, it fits in my 40l backpack just fine. Its plenty loud enough for campfire singalongs and general noodling. Not much lighter than a mandolin, but very sturdy.

IMO a non-resonated banjo-uke tuned in fifths makes a great travel mandolin. Sturdy and usually lightweight. Loud too! And you’ve got instant volume control: just “put a sock in it” (between the dowel stick and head) to tone it down a bit.

I have several, but my favorite overall, and best for travel, is a 1920s Bacon. 13.5” scale length, 8” pot. Aquila makes a set of uke strings designed for 5ths tuning (set 30U). There are many other vintage brands that would work as well. Bacons are noted for a nice tone, but stromberg-voisinette, slingerland, Vega, may be good affordable options. I swap out the friction tuners on these old ones with gotoh geared replacements which makes tuning easier on these short-scale instruments.

Really nice design, there. I think the price point is a bit high for what the OP is after, though.

I played a banjo uke a very long time ago, it was a fun instrument. I changed the tuners to geared tuners, cheap ones will do. I used steel strings, with about an 8" pot. It sounded good and had lots of volume, but not overbearing. Gave it to my grandson last year.

I’ve used my Flatiron pancake (Army Navy) as a travel mando. I’ve had a Martin, a travolin and tried the trick with a uke - the Flatiron is by far the best option. A big muddy in a soft case would be good too. I really wish someone would make an army navy style carbon fiber - that would be the ultimate.

Years back I was traveling a lot for business ( Pickin' and FRETS ) and wanted to take a mandolin on the road with me so I could practice while sitting in my hotel room. Rather than carrying a separate case, I built a rather durable mando that would fit in my hanging garment bag when the bag was folded in half (before the time of the now popular roll-boards). The body is basically a piece of 3/4˝ maple with a portion of the body - about 3˝ in diameter - routed out to act as a mini air chamber (what was remaining as "soundboard" wood is, I think, about 1/8˝ thick). The back of the air chamber was enclosed with a plastic plate (so I'd have an "air chamber") and I made a singular f -hole in the front. It had an absolutely necessary pre-embargo Brazilian rosewood peghead veneer and a carefully profiled neck (so it would feel right). And, of course, it had the absolutely necessary F-style peghead. It probably accompanied me on about 20-30 trips and never got broken. It now hangs on my wall but is still together and playable. And, in case you are curious, it sounded much more like a piece of wood than a Loar-signed F5! R

Why Meta's Ray-Ban Smart Glasses are my favorite tech purchase this year

fullsizerender

During CES 2024, I went to Sunglasses Hut to try on a pair of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses to feed my curious mind. I didn't expect to purchase a pair, but I did, and five months later, these glasses are my favorite purchase of 2024 so far. The best part is that the device has only improved with time.

Also:  Google co-founder on the ideal form factor for AI hardware (and his Google Glass regrets)

I've tried smart glasses in the past, but they have all been bulky and uncomfortable to wear for more than five minutes. The glasses always feel like I'm wearing a gadget on my face. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are different, though -- these are sunglasses first and smart glasses second. The tech takes a backseat, not only in the design of the glasses but also in the design of the charging case, which looks like a regular sunglasses case.

When you look at Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, they look and feel like sunglasses instead of a gadget. That subtlety is a standout feature for me. I bought the Headliner variant of the glasses for $329, which suits my style, and I haven't carried my sunglasses since. You can get the Ray-Bans with transmission lenses for indoor wear, but that option is only available in Wayfarer style, which starts at $299.

1. Brilliant design and even better functionality

I couldn't have been happier that I bought these Ray-Bans before traveling to Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles for two specific reasons: video and sound.

Recording your experiences on theme park rides is difficult, especially rollercoasters. I got great footage while using the Ray-Bans to record the outdoor Harry Potter ride. Outdoor shots have excellent stabilization for such a small form factor, so my walking shots around the theme park looked amazing, too.

Also: How these $400 XR glasses cured my Apple Vision Pro FOMO

The footage might not be as good as from a GoPro device , but I got good point-of-view shots without attaching another camera to my body or cap. I didn't count my smart glasses as an "extra device" because I would have been wearing sunglasses outdoors anyway. After all, I wore my "normal" sunglasses at Universal Studios Singapore last year.

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses samples (left to right): outdoors in daylight, evening, and indoors

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses sample shots (left to right): inside a train in low light, a selfie in the morning, and a shot in bright daylight

I was also impressed by the quality of the lowlight video footage. I recorded the Sorting Hat in Hogwarts, and the footage looked like something taken on a $400 smartphone.

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses also double as earbuds. These aren't in-ear buds, so sound leaks will happen, but that's not a problem if there's already plenty of ambient noise around you. In noisy areas, I had to turn the volume to 100%, and still needed more. 90% of the time, however, I didn't feel that I needed louder volume.

The sound quality on the Ray-Bans isn't what you'd get in expensive standalone earbuds , but it still takes your theme park experience to the next level because the music feels like ambient sound that's part of the environment. You can trigger Spotify or Apple Music by tapping and holding the touchpad on the right arm of the glasses.

Also: Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses just got another useful feature for free (and a new style)

With standalone earbuds, you also get mics -- and these Ray-Bans are no different. They house multiple microphones, and the quality is surprisingly good. I've received many calls on these smart glasses and callers said they didn't notice much difference in sound quality from my usual earbuds ( the OnePlus Buds 3 ).

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses last for about two hours when used heavily. My usage included continuous music, a couple of calls, and a lot of camera footage. I've also worn the glasses continuously for five hours with 10% battery, as I wasn't listening to much music and only using the camera moderately. The official figure from Meta quotes four hours of battery life, which includes "capturing and syncing 100 videos or up to 500 photos." I'm glad the Ray-Bans still work as sunglasses with zero charge.

Another important factor to consider when buying companion devices, such as a smartwatch or a smart ring for your phone, is how they charge, because you'll be charging them often. It's a hassle when these devices require proprietary charging. Thankfully, that's not an issue on the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses because the charging case requires the same wire as your phone -- a Type-C cable.

As for privacy, these glasses include a white LED light on the opposite side of the camera, which triggers when you're recording a video or taking a photo. In public, it doesn't attract attention, but if you're recording someone directly, they'll be aware.

2. This is the perfect AI form factor

Unlike recently launched AI-enabled gadgets, including Rabbit's R1 and Humane's Ai Pin , the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses aren't AI-first. These glasses have stayed with me because, instead of trying to replace my phone, they are a great companion device.

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses also now include the Meta AI assistant , which was rolled out last month. I haven't tried the assistant on my device yet, but I've asked the glasses to place calls and music with the "Hey Meta" trigger, which works flawlessly.

Also: Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses can identify landmarks now and tell you about them

I think these Ray-Bans are the perfect form factor for an AI device. The speakers are near your ears, and that positioning creates more intimate feedback than announcing something on a speaker attached to your body or through a device held in your palm.

There is room for improvement

I haven't been irritated by a bug in the glasses, but I have been annoyed when the camera records in a 3:4 aspect ratio instead of 9:16. This switch wouldn't have been a problem if there was a way to change the ratio in the settings, but there's no way to set the aspect ratio from the Meta View app. The glasses are meant to record at 9:16, so it isn't clear why the output on the app is 3:4.

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses don't record actual point-of-view video from the line of your eyes but from a slightly right-angled view. For those of you who are used to mounting an Insta360 Go 3 or a GoPro on your head, and expect these smart glasses to capture a similar angle, you'll be surprised. I thought I'd get used to the right-angled view, but my footage often has a lot of space to my left side.

Also: Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses get hands-free Apple Music integration and more

While the glasses recharge quickly, I'd like better battery life on Meta's next-generation Ray-Bans. I use my glasses for playing music on my commute. This usage drains half the battery by the time I reach the event where I want to record a video. Also, if you're getting these glasses with transition lenses to wear for most of the day, you won't be able to.

Despite these flaws, I use my Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses daily and consider them one of my best investments in a while.
