Great but needs improvement

Overall I have virtually no complaints. It does what it sets out to do for truckers to make things easier while on the road and in the store. That being said the app has one MAJOR issue that should be a priority in fixing. The app doesn’t seem to have full support in push notifications for showers. Several times I’m been waiting in que for the shower and while I’m doing something else I’ll get a notification that the shower expired, but no notification before that my shower was ready???? This is getting annoying. Most times it’s not an inconvenience but the times that it’s late or there’s 7+ guys ahead of me the first time I was in line it’s gets infuriating pretty quickly. LOVES please fix this issue.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for reaching out. We want to troubleshoot this crash with you, but we'll need some more information. Please email us at [email protected] and request they send on to the Love's Connect mobile app team. We'll work through how to get you up and running with the app.

Doesn’t Work

First you broke the login system on the app where my login worked just fine to where I had to sign in with my card and pin, which the app refuses to allow and tells me to call customer service as though they can fix what the developers broke. Second, you precede to brake the website as well, so now you won’t let me login to either the site or the app. Why can’t just use our email addresses and passwords as at least an option to login instead like normal people using a normal app or website providing a normal service. What the heck? I’ve already complained about this several times with you blocking my card and pin from being able to login to your broken app, then you break the website too. Now I’m running blind without knowing if I have points or shower credits. Loves, please fire these fresh out of app boot camp millennials and hire real, experienced developers to fix what they’ve broken. I can’t even use your service anymore. This has been going on for far too long. I’m very disappointed in Love’s upper management’s lack of over-site into what the tech department keeps breaking.
We appreciate your feedback, Scott. The app update introduced new pay features, which required a more secure sign in process. You may select "Sign In" from the Home screen and then tap “I don’t have a PIN,” which guides you through signing in with your email and password. If this doesn't help, we’re happy to assist with any additional issues you are encountering. You can reach our Support Team at [email protected].

Love Loves - add more RV features

We have just started traveling in our camper van and have discovered Love’s as newbies. We have stopped at about 8 travel centers and overnighted at 3 that have RV facilities. We have found them to be universally clean as can be, the staff friendly and helpful and the showers are spotless. The sites had good water pressure, electric and one even had sewer hookup. As for the app, it needs to be enhanced to support the RV parks better. My suggestions: 1) add a section where I can find my past and upcoming visits, 2) allow me to reserve showers for more than just myself, so I can make shower reservations for both of at the same time, 3) add a place where I could see what is available in a travel center store, so we know what is there, especially regarding things like tools and other RV equipment.
Thanks for sharing your feedback! We'll look into incorporating RV support in our app based on your suggestions. Please email us at [email protected] if you have any additional suggestions or need assistance.

Keep on trucking: How Love's Travel Stop grew from one store to an international empire

W ATONGA — Harold Wells, 73, has worked for Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores for 51 years, an entire career, after starting out here in one of the late Tom Love's earliest stores.

Al Harper, 70, is still here in Watonga, where he grew up and where he's worked for 24 years in Love's No. 1, the first of what is now nearly 650 Love's Travel Stops and convenience stores catering to casual drivers and professional truckers in 42 states. The company has about 40,000 employees.

Over those decades, Wells and Harper have demonstrated, actually lived out what Love's points to for its success: "humble beginnings, teamwork, work ethic and perseverance."

The Love family, and the family-owned corporation, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, say those aspects of the company's culture — humble beginnings, teamwork, work ethic and perseverance — have guided its growth since Tom and Judy Love started out in 1964.

Judy Love doesn't say much to the media, but in light of Love's 60th anniversary, she told The Oklahoman:

"When Tom and I opened the first location in Watonga 60 years ago, we couldn’t imagine what this company would become. The journey has been amazing. One thing I know is that we wouldn’t be here without our loyal team members and customers. We are fortunate so I feel that we should help others. That’s why we’ve always given back to many nonprofit organizations."

Dedication and innovation keep longtime Love's employees at work for decades at Love's No 1 in Watonga and at OKC corporate headquarters

Harper said a manager at Love's No. 1 recruited him to take the night shift in 2001, when shoplifters and others were causing the store trouble. It was his second career after 27 years working at a carpet mill until it closed. He said he "got it cleaned up," and has been happy working there ever since.

"I like meeting the people. I told (a supervisor), 'I'll stay here and keep the store going as long as I can,'" the 70-year-old said.

Wells started at Love's in Watonga part time in 1972, when he was working on degrees in math and physics at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, just before it was renamed Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He graduated but stayed with Love's, never looking back.

Wells is Love's manager of retail accounting systems and has lived in Edmond and worked at company headquarters — at suburban 10601 N Pennsylvania Ave. in The Village — for decades. He said every innovation Love's has made over the years has given him something new and exciting to learn. He could have retired 10 years ago, but he's kept at it.

"It's easy to work for a company and believe in what you do," he said, when the company has a reputation like Love's.

Love's Field: A reminder that roots and reputation helped bring the big-hearted Loves big riches

Roots and reputation helped make Love's a top workplace, and helped make the Loves generous billionaires, giving to causes across the state, not just in Oklahoma City.

Love's Travel Stops had $26.5 billion in revenue last year, according to Forbes, making it the ninth-largest private company in the country. Judy Love had a net worth of $10.2 billion, landing her at No. 2 on USA Today's list of "America's richest self-made women."

Symbols abound for "humble beginnings, teamwork, work ethic and perseverance." Add benevolence, and the symbol Jenny Love Meyer keeps in her office makes sense. She's a daughter of Tom and Judy Love, and Love's chief culture officer.

The reminder of what it took to get the family and company where they are? A softball trophy, but a replica, making it a reminder of a reminder:

Love's Field, which opened this year . Love's contributed the lead gift of the $37 million that helped pay for the $48 million field and stadium, earning it naming rights. The trophy is a reproduction of the University of Oklahoma Sooners’ 2023 NCAA championship softball trophy.

“This 44,000 square-foot complex is a nod to Coach (Patty) Gasso and all those who have been instrumental to building the Oklahoma softball dynasty and hopefully an inspiration for the female student-athletes who compete in it. They are our leaders of the future,” Love Meyer said. “Love’s is humbled to stand alongside the more than 1,100 donors who graciously supported this project. The $37 million raised is the largest dollar amount privately fundraised for a female-specific facility project in college athletics history.”

Parallels between Love's No. 1 in Watonga and Love's Field in Norman

Raising Love's Field took years and "a village of dedicated people to complete," Love Meyer said. She said she sees parallels to her parents' success after their beginnings in Watonga and Gasso's success after 30 years of "building a softball powerhouse in Norman, Oklahoma."

“With little money to invest and a growing family to support, my parents used a $5,000 loan to lease an abandoned service station in Watonga, a small community 60 miles west of Oklahoma City," she said. "That initial willingness to start and grow a business required confidence, innovative thinking, hard work and perseverance, and is why Love’s is where it is today.

"Similarly, when Coach Gasso arrived in Norman in 1994, she organized practices at a local park and needed to schedule practice in between slow pitch softball leagues. And sometimes had to clean up the dugout from festivities the night before.

"She never gave up. From former OU Associate Athletic Director Marita Hynes, Coach Gasso, softball alumni, to current players, and the university, they persevered through all the challenges. That championship mindset is how success is built.”

How Love's started: Tom and Judy Love 'had two small children to feed and bills to pay'

Nobody in the Love family, or among the earliest employees, could have dreamed that Love's, first called Musket Corp., would ever become such a retail juggernaut, with locations popping up along interstate highways like spring dandelions — plus several other ventures catering to, and supporting, the trucking industry, everyday travelers, and fuel supply chain management.

“When my parents opened our first location 60 years ago, they never imagined what Love’s would grow into," Love Meyer said. "They had two small children to feed and bills to pay and had to figure out a way to do that. My dad had the idea to lease an abandoned filling station, and through hard work, finding ways to learn about the business and, as he would say, working with and hiring people smarter than him, they grew it into what it is today.

"We attribute our success to our team members and customers. They’ve helped us grow into what we are today while remaining true to the family-owned and -operated business model that we know sets us apart from competitors. We always say that if our teams take care of customers, we’ll take care of them, and we think that’s been a pretty good standard to live by.”

Love's rolls both ways, with professional drivers and casual customers

If you're a professional truck driver, Love's is a truck stop. If you're not, Love's is a convenience store with fast food. Chances are, trucker or not, you don't know what all drives the family-owned company.

Love's rolls both ways, of course. Two-thirds of fuel sales are to professional drivers, and two-thirds of in-store sales are to casual customers, the company says. But Love's business is more than gasoline, diesel, and road trip snacks and fast food.

This year, the company plans to add up to 25 new locations, update up to 40 older stores, and rebuild four, among other company expansions, said Shane Wharton, Love's president.

“Six decades ago, (the late) Tom Love opened our first service station in Watonga, Oklahoma, and almost immediately started selling household items to make stopping in more convenient for customers,” Wharton said. “Today, as the only major travel stop that is still family owned and operated, we continue with his innovative spirit by adding new products and improving the experience to give customers more reasons to stop in.”

Four generations of Loves are involved with the company, including billionaire co-founder Judy Love . But numerous others have helped build Love's since 1964, Love-Meyer said.

“While a lot has changed ... the heart of Love’s has not," she said. “We are so grateful for our incredible team members — past and present — whose contributions play a role in shaping our company.

"Growth and innovation of our product offerings, living our core values and culture daily, and dedication to clean places, friendly faces are what this company was started on in 1964. Today, we proudly stand on that foundation and know our best is still ahead of us.”

Love's went on a buying spree in 2023, its biggest year for mergers and acquisitions.

The company acquired EZ GO from Lawton-based Carey Johnson Oil Co., including six travel stops on Oklahoma turnpikes, five on the Kansas turnpike and 11 convenience stores in Oklahoma and Nebraska.

EZ GO, like Love's, features franchise food and owns and operates Back Forty Barbecue at two locations. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Houston-based Musket Corp., owned by Love's, established European operations with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Musket's focus is supplying Love’s Travel Stops with gasoline and diesel and managing the company’s biodiesel program. Subsidiary Musket Europe SARL extends the company's commodity supply and logistics, providing relief for the instability in global fuel supply chains.

Love's also bought OKC-based TVC Pro-Driver, a motor club and commercial driver’s license protection service. It assists drivers and fleets in reducing or dismissing fines, preventing downtime for court, and protecting federal compliance, safety and accountability scores. A subscription provides access to a network of attorneys and discounts on safety solutions, health care and more. Terms were not disclosed.

RETAIL INVESTMENT: Car washes near me? Probably. Why investors are building them everywhere in OKC area

Love's continues to expand and enhance services for drivers — professional and casual.

Through awards from the Federal Highway Administration's National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program , Love's-owned Trillium Energy Solutions , which Love's acquired in 2016, plans to add to Love’s electric vehicle fast-charging network with new chargers at 29 locations this year.

For truckers driving Freightliners, which Love's said accounts for about half all trucks on the road, Freightliner ExpressPoint is now available at more than 400 Love’s truck care locations, providing light mechanical warranty repair work for Freightliner trucks through Love’s partnership with Daimler Truck North America. Love's rolled out the service in January and plans to expand it this year.

Love's plans 10 new full-service Speedco locations next to its travel stops, 50 maintenance bays and and about 60 emergency roadside vehicles. Love's has owned Speedco since 2017.

Love family philanthropy seen across Oklahoma, elsewhere

Love's donates 2% of net profits to charity and good causes.

"Many know the story of Love’s...," Love Meyer said last year in Love's first-ever Community Impact Report. "And from those humble roots, he built a family-owned and -operated network of travel stops now approaching 700 locations.

"But it’s important to know that from the start, as he built the business, he cared about the communities where the stores were located. It is this caring, combined with a desire to give back, that is the foundation for charitable giving at Love’s. This is certainly one of the legacies my dad left with us. ... Helping others is nothing new for Love’s."

This year, in addition to the debut of Love’s Field, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s Expedition Africa and completely renovated Love's Pachyderm Building opened, the new Women’s Center at Mercy Hospital opened, and Love's Planetarium at Science Museum Oklahoma is scheduled to open.

"Our efforts are certainly not limited to Oklahoma and include building meaningful partnerships to transform communities nationwide," Love Meyer said.

Love's gave away nearly $12 million in 2022, according its 2023 Community Impact Report — 46% to youths and education, 20% to health and human services, 25% to civic and community organizations, and 9% to other needs. Recipients included:

  • $6.9 million to Children's Miracle Network, which has received nearly $50 million in all from Love's.
  • $3.5 million to Science Museum Oklahoma/Love's Planeterium.
  • $150,000 to Operation Homefront.
  • $100,000 to St. Christopher Trucking Development and Relief Fund.
  • $50,000 to Truckers Against Trafficking.

In addition, Love's corporate employees donated $676,000 to United Way of Central Oklahoma and 1,400 volunteer hours to various causes.

Judy Love, as matriarch, has led the way in the Love family's giving.

Recipients include Positive Tomorrows, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, the University of Oklahoma , Oklahoma State University, Children’s Miracle Network and United Way, as well as out-of-state organizations and groups.

All that giving, and all that innovation, have kept the Loves' reputation growing, and Love's competitive and growing, for 60 years.

“As Love's has expanded its network and offerings over the past 60 years, we’ve been able to stay true to who we are and what we represent, clean places with friendly faces who work hard every day to get customers back on the road quickly," Love Meyer said. "The dedication to helping our customers every day, while innovating and striving to be better, is foundational for Love’s, from our leaders to team members across the nation.”

10 Reasons We Love Love’s Travel Stops

The Oklahoma-based gas station and convenience store is a sight for sore eyes on long car rides.

travel stop love

We’ve all been there. You’re five hours into an eight-hour car ride , or maybe you’ve only made it an hour from your house, but already everyone is getting restless. Someone needs to go to the bathroom. Someone spilled the box of Cheez-its, so you’re running dangerously low on snacks. The driver needs a caffeine fix, and Fido looks like he’s about ready to jump out the window. That’s when you see it—that familiar bright yellow sign topped with a beating red heart. There’s a Love’s at the next exit that’s about to solve all your road trip woes. Here are 10 reasons why we’ll always brake for a Love’s Travel Stop and why we can’t get enough of this Southern-born franchise.

Courtesy of Love's Travel Stops

1. It’s owned by a Southern family.

Tom and Judy Love started Love’s in 1964 when they spent $5,000 to lease an abandoned service station in Watonga, Oklahoma. Though Tom passed away in 2023 at the age of 85, the nationwide franchise is still privately owned and run by the Love family.

2. There’s always a Love’s right when you need one.

With about 600 travel stops in 42 states, nearly every highway in the U.S. is blessed with a Love’s. This means that no matter where you’re driving in the South—even if you’ve gotten really deep in the sticks—you’re likely to find a Love’s stocked and waiting to welcome you in.

3. Their road trip snacks are elite.

The one redeeming quality of a long car ride (other than a great playlist) are the snacks . Like any convenience store, Love’s has a huge selection of packaged snacks—chips, sunflower seeds, Little Debbie cakes, beef jerky, the whole nine yards. But the real star of the show at a Love’s is their company-branded candy line, which includes everything from gummy bears and peach rings to frosted heart pretzels and saltwater taffy.

4. They’re always open.

Driving late into the night? Love’s is open. What about those wee hours of the morning? They’re open then, too. There’s something about a 3 a.m. Coke and peanuts that just hits different.

5. It’s a great place to stretch your legs.

After long hours spent cramped in the car, your legs may be itching to move. Love’s is a great place to stop because the store is so big that you’ll have plenty to peruse while you walk the life back into your aching limbs.

6. You can have a meal there.

Hundreds of Love’s locations are paired with fast-food favorites like Arby’s, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Hardee’s, and Bojangles. But even if there’s no dining partner, Love’s has its own line of hot sandwiches and tacos (for breakfast and lunch), as well as a roller grill that features hot dogs and smoked sausages, as well as their signature Tornados taquitos in flavors like Ranchero Beef Steak and Southwestern-Style Chicken.

7. They give back to the community.

Giving generously is a huge part of the Love’s company culture. The franchise donates to nonprofits in Oklahoma and beyond, including Teach for America, Operation Homefront, and the United Way of Central Oklahoma. In addition, all locations donate a part of their budget to a local nonprofit of their choice, and Love’s participates in the Children’s Miracle Network. To date, Love’s has raised more than $33 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

8. They think of everything.

There’s a lot more to a Love’s Travel Stop than just gas and snacks. Locations across the country offer truck care, RV parking and hookups, laundry facilities, and even private showers.

9. Dogs are welcome.

Not only does Love’s accommodate humans, but it takes care of their furry friends, too. Many Love’s locations feature dog parks and pet waste station.

10. You’ll find plenty of clean restrooms.

The number one reason to stop on a road trip? Someone’s got to go. Rather than pressing your luck on a small-town gas station, count on Love’s to provide clean restrooms without a line.

'A life filled with integrity, honesty and faith.' Tom Love, founder of Love's Travel Stops, dies at 85

travel stop love

Tom Love, founder of the family-owned Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores , died early Tuesday after an extended illness at age 85.

Love and his wife, Judy, started Love’s Travel Stops in 1964 when they leased a gas station in Watonga. By the mid-1970s, they had pioneered the idea of offering groceries and other services at their travel stops.

Shane Wharton, president of Love’s, described Love as a man of conviction who never wavered from the principles of honesty and integrity. He said Love constantly took interest in the stories, thoughts and ideas of his customers and employees.

“He credited the company’s success to the people who worked for us,” Wharton said. “In many respects, he was an ordinary person who built an extraordinary business alongside his wife, Judy, and his family, who he loved deeply."

A legacy that began in Oklahoma City

Born in 1937 in Oklahoma City, Love attended St. Gregory's Preparatory School in Shawnee and St. John's University in Minnesota before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1954. He and Judy married in 1960.

In 1964, Tom and Judy Love used $5,000 to lease an abandoned service station in Watonga, a small rural town northwest of Oklahoma City. From a modest beginning, the then-named Musket Corp. opened 40 stores in eight years in western Oklahoma.

The Loves in 1972 opened a country store in Guymon that was the first store in the country to combine self-service gasoline and groceries. The original country store featured self-service gasoline, grocery and dairy items and offered extended hours, seven days a week.

Love opened the company’s first travel stop on Interstate 40 in Amarillo in 1981, catering to professional truck drivers and cross-country travelers. Over the years Love’s expanded its services to include hot and fresh food items, truck care maintenance and warm showers.

The company opened its 600th location in October, and its operations have grown to include businesses focused on truck maintenance, motor transport, commodity supply and alternative energies.

In a 2019 interview with The Oklahoman, Love said his travel centers are usually purposely located every 60 to 80 miles. The locations are designed to make timing stops easy for truckers on tight schedules.

Most of the travel plazas feature multiple restaurants and a hardware section resembling an Ace Hardware for truckers. In 2016 the company expanded into hospitality , building hotels alongside some of its travel centers.

Forbes in December listed Love’s as the 10 th -largest privately owned company in America with $25.5 billion in revenues. The company, still owned by the Love family, employs more than 38,000 people in 42 states, including 2,000 in Oklahoma City.

Love kept his company rooted in The Village, the small Oklahoma City suburb where he got his start.

The headquarters at the southwest corner of Hefner Road and Pennsylvania Avenue started with a 10,000-square-foot office building. Instead of building new headquarters downtown or in the newest glitzy office park on the fringe of the city, Love quietly expanded his offices and e ventually added the neighboring 126,000-square-foot former Hertz call center that once overshadowed the Love's headquarters.

“We like it out here,” Love said in 2019. “We started the business in The Village simply because we were living here. We had just gotten married. And if you look at our corporate charter, it’s at 1713 Westchester Drive.”

Former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, who appointed Love as chairman of the Oklahoma Transportation Commission, noted Love was often underestimated, which had its benefits in business.

"He was a visionary, innovator, inspirational leader and compassionate person," Keating said. "Tom was a quintessential entrepreneur long before entrepreneurialism was ever in vogue."

'He loved people, and that was evident in how he guided our family'

More: Meacham: Giving back is key to Love's business model

Love’s contributions to his hometown can be found throughout the city. His enthusiasm for sports led the company to enter a partnership with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Love's logo is displayed prominently on the front left shoulder of Oklahoma City Thunder jerseys and was on display with the NASCAR Cup Series team Front Row Motorsports when Michael McDowell drove the Love’s-sponsored car into Victory Lane at the Daytona 500 in 2021.

Love and his family’s charitable causes include Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, United Way, Catholic Charities, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma.

In 2018, OU opened the Tom Love Innovation Hub to provide a space for future entrepreneurs and other workforce development programs. The university recently broke ground on Love’s Field — the future home of the six-time national champion Sooner softball team.

In addition, his legacy will carry on at the Love Family Women’s Center on the campus of Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City and Science Museum Oklahoma’s new state-of-the-art planetarium that will be named Love’s Planetarium. The family also help sponsor concerts and shows at the Love’s Travel Stops stage at Scissortail Park.

Love was also a prominent member of the Chickasaw Nation and was inducted to the tribe’s hall of fame in 2019 by Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby.

“The induction recognized Tom’s immeasurable contributions to the advancement and betterment of the Chickasaw Nation,” Anoatubby said. “Tom embodied the values we cherish — honesty, trust, respect and service. He was generous with his time and resources. We enjoyed and cherished his friendship.”

Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy, his children, Frank, Greg, Jenny and Laura; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two more on the way.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather,” the Love family said in a release provided to The Oklahoman. “He loved people, and that was evident in how he guided our family, operated the business he started in 1964 and gave back to our community and organizations across the country that serve others. He was always committed to helping others succeed and opening the door for leaders, including his children and grandchildren, and we look forward to building upon his legacy. While the grief we feel is unmeasurable, we celebrate his life and will continue his legacy of living a life filled with integrity, honesty and faith.”

We have stopped at a lot of Loves while traveling in our motorhome and this has by far been the best. Store and pumps are typical but this location has a full service RV hook up with 6 pull through spots. It's perfect to fuel up, get snacks and stay overnight while traveling. They also have an area with a fire pit and dog park. We'll definitely make this our go to stop while traveling from north to the pan handle.

women's bathroom was messy, men's was fine. very dirty store in general. floors were nasty. on a positive note we met a cute wiener dog named tucker! also bought a charger for kaci's switch so we could keep playing tears of the kingdom. frank and his trucking experience thought it wasn't a great stop overall.

We stopped here for gas and a bathroom break on the last leg of our trip back from Virginia. OMG!!! The staff was so friendly and I noticed this immediately! Nice and well stocked store. They even had some really cool souvenirs for the state of Alabama and just in general. I bought a tag with my legal name on it & I just had to have it for $4.99. Yep!! The bathrooms were clean enough from what I recall. No issues there. Gas pumps worked without any problems. I would say this was a successful experience. It served it's purpose. I wouldn't hesitate to stop here in the future! Located right off the interstate- there's a subway and god father's pizza express located inside as well.

Good location to get off and on. Clean restrooms that were open unlike the one west of Birmingham, AL. I wish they had Godfathers in all there stores like this location.

Very spacious gas station, food was delicious, I love their deals for the hotdogs. I even bought the cutest stuff flamingo, it had legs! The only problem I had was getting in and out, there was construction right when we took the ramp up to the entrance. The workers were pretty rude, and made us wait on pulling out for just two cars. Oh boy. Watch out, one of them will kick your car!

This Loves was not listed so I created one. Although, a cop behind me stated that it's been up for about 5 years. You can buy CB's and CB equipment and accessories here. They have a great selection and quality brand names you can trust like cobra. It's convenient right off the Interstate and a great place to take a rest and get caffeinated up for the rest of your trip. Yes, they have a coffee island with various items to choose from. Their bathrooms are pretty clean too.

They said they would come out to fill propane, called twice, no one showed up. So rude. Even the Chester's chicken was subpar.

Nice travel stop. Great dog run. Good gas prices. Clean bathrooms. Long Car squeegees. Yelp says I need to say more so blah blah.

My Grandparents Have Been Traveling for 60 Years — Here Are the 11 Comfy Items They Always Pack As Retirees

Keep reading for travel advice from my grandparents who say they’re in the “golden age” of their life.

travel stop love

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Being a travel writer, it only makes sense that my passion for exploration runs in the family — after all, where else could I have inherited from? Both sets of my grandparents are avid travelers, taking on a number of international trips per year to destinations like Thailand , Italy , France , and so much more.

My travel-loving grandparents have entered the “golden age” of their life, as my grandpa refers to it, enjoying retired life by exploring the world . But of course, that ability to travel with ease — and joy — comes with a fool-proof list of travel accessories to make the journey as smooth as humanly possible. With so much experience under their belts, I’ve tapped my grandparents to curate a list of their travel must-haves, including everything from their favorite slip-on sneakers to a portable walking cane in case of emergencies. Keep reading for their go-tos starting at just $5.

Zomake Portable Metal Shoe Horn

“I don’t go anywhere without my pocket shoe horn,” my grandpa told me on our phone call the other night. I should’ve known it was going to be his first bit of advice to share with other retiree travelers, because for my entire life he’s had shoe horns littered all over his house (and in his bags) to assist him in putting on his loafers, sneakers, and other shoes everywhere from the front door to the rental cabin to the doctor’s office. He sent me the link to this handy $5 portable one, and even though I’m just 24 I’m considering adding it to my cart to make my life a bit easier, too.

Kizik Madrid Slip-on Sneakers

My other grandpa doesn’t keep a shoe horn on him anymore because he has replaced nearly all of his shoes with these slip-on sneakers that he calls “the best invention since sliced bread,” and says that he “wishes he’d had a pair his entire life.” His devout love for these sneakers has also turned my grandma into a convert, and now the two happily sport their Kiziks all over Thailand walking from food stall to food stall.

Samsonite Freeform 21-inch Carry-on Suitcase

My grandparents don’t have patience for heavy, squeaky luggage, and that’s why they swear by this Samsonite carry-on that comes equipped with four smooth-gliding wheels and a spacious-yet-compact build to keep all of their belongings conveniently packed. This suitcase weighs in at just over 6 pounds, which means that they don’t have to worry about lugging around a heavy bag and risk hurting themselves. They each have one of their own — and they’ll probably never travel with any other bag.

Vera Bradley Triple Zip Hipster Crossbody Bag

Vera Bradley

As much as my grandmother loves her fancy shoulder bags, she says they’re “too heavy for long trips now.” That’s why she now travels with a lightweight crossbody bag that’s still spacious enough to hold onto her phone, passport, and other personal belongings but won’t weigh her down. She loves this Vera Bradley one for its “fashionable look and ability to keep [her] things close.”

Auvon Travel Pills Organizer

When you’re traveling, it’s important to keep all of your pills in one convenient spot. My grandparents have one of these boxes that not only organizes all of their medications by the day of the week, but also by the time of day (morning and night) to streamline taking — and remembering — your medications. My grandma also advised me to tell other travelers to “pack an extra few days worth of medication just in case your trip gets delayed or extended.” Oh, and this set just so happens to be on sale for $8 for Prime Members.

Ostrich Pillow Compression Socks

My grandparents have found that compression socks help relieve some of the discomfort and swelling that comes from prolonged restricted movement by stimulating circulation in your legs. And while they’ve tried a variety of pairs (including this Charmking Compression Sock Set of Eight ) their current favorite is this one from Ostrich Pillow that I introduced them to. They absolutely love these socks for their “impressive comfortable compression,” so much so that they feel confident enough in them to brave our upcoming 24+-hour travel day to Thailand.

Vaunn Portable Folding Cane

My grandpa sometimes needs extra assistance walking, especially during long travel days, and that’s why he always keeps this convenient portable folding cane on him. We got it for him last year, and since then he keeps it on him if his knee acts up or needs some help with balance. He finds that it's better than traveling with his typical cane because he doesn’t have to worry about “a larger one taking up too much space in the airplane cabin or through TSA.”

Techshare Magnifying Glass and Light Keychain

On a recent visit with my grandpa, he pulled out this handy dandy two-in-one magnifying glass and light at the dimly lit restaurant we were at and used it to read the menu and order his meal. I asked him when he started carrying it around, and he said his friend recommended it a year ago for reading handouts and other information while on-the-go. I found it utterly genius, and even better that it hooks onto his keys — all for a mere $8. It’s now a must-have for him that he can’t recommend enough to make travel smooth for other retirees.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow

I gave my grandma this neck pillow last Christmas to replace her old one, and when I asked her how it held up, she said it’s so comfortable that as soon as she sits down on a flight, she immediately falls asleep and stays asleep the entire time. She’s also a fan of its convenient carrying bag that she said allows her “to keep it in her purse to rest in the car” as well.

Loft Drop Shoulder Cardigan

Both sets of my grandparents live in South Florida, and between the humid heat and blasting indoor AC, a good cardigan is an everyday and travel staple for them both. They both love styles like this lightweight one from Loft (and both happen to absolutely love everything from Loft) to add a bit of cozy warmth no matter where they are. Even better, this stylish one is on sale for $33 right now.

Quince Women’s Linen Pants

Toward the end of my call with my grandma, I asked her if there was any other advice that she’d  like to share, and she said that travelers “shouldn’t waste their time with jeans or uncomfortable pants,” and instead should opt for a pair of pull-on pants that go on easy while remaining comfortable and breathable. She actually found this specific $40 pair from Quince in an advertisement online and has been obsessed ever since. I mean really, she has three pairs and counting.

On the May 13 episode of Live With Kelly and Mark , the married couple were talking about a recent trip they took together and got into a story about attempting to make their flight on time. The duo explained that they needed to be escorted quickly to the plane on a shuttle driven by airport staff ... and their journey came with a few hilarious bumps along the way.

"We were on a plane for 15,000 hours yesterday, but it seemed much longer," Kelly began the tale in a video posted on TikTok . "We were late for our connecting flight, so we had to get on one of those shuttle carts that they ring the bell and they make people move out of the way."

Kelly demonstrated how mortified she was by the whole ordeal, covering her face with her hands and crouching down in her seat. While Kelly was embarrassed by the situation, Mark had a completely different reaction to the attention.

"She's down like this, and I'm proud," Mark jokingly added. "Like, get out of the way! Move, move! "I love it — I wanna drive it."

"For me, I'd rather miss the flight than do that," Kelly emphasized. "It's so mortifying."

"15,000 hours but seemed much longer!! FACTS!!" one person wrote. "Kelly I feel your pain!!!" a different follower added.

What's so great about Buc-ee's? Fans love the food, gas pumps, mascot, sparkling bathrooms

Buc-ee’s gas station/travel centers – many as big as a football field and all with bathrooms maybe cleaner than yours at home – are popping up across America in an ambitious expansion that started in Texas, surged across the southeast, and is now turning northward.

The giant gas station is set to open its second Kentucky location this summer about 15 miles outside of Bowling Green — likely hard to miss when traveling on Interstate 65 heading to and from Nashville.

Aside from the occasional outrage over fuel prices, gas stations usually don’t get much public attention these days. That’s not the case with Buc-ee’s, which U.S. drivers have embraced with a loyalty some retailers can only dream of.

"I've been a fan since I was about 15 or 16," says Anthony Villarreal, 41, of Houston. He's a sales representative for a building distributor and an administrator/moderator of the Buc-ee's Lovers group on Facebook. He and his family frequently visit a Buc-ee's on family trips.

"The gasoline is usually the cheapest around, so that's what gets us in the door," Villarreal says. Once inside, visitors find there's more than an acre's worth of displays to see, food to eat, and merchandise to purchase.

But there's more to Buc-ee's than buying gasoline, sandwiches, brisket, Beaver Nuggets, fudge, beef jerky, or T-shirts.

"It's impossible to go to a Buc-ee's and use the phrase 'ho-hum' because there's always so much going on," says Jeff Lenard, vice president of strategic industry initiatives at the National Association of Convenience Stores.

"It's more of a theater experience," he says.

Why is Buc-ee's so popular? Let's start with the restrooms.

After buying gasoline, 1 out of 5 people use restrooms, Lenard says. For travelers, that means "the bathroom is literally the front door," he says.

"You start there, at the restroom," Lenard says. "Your perception of the store is tied to what the bathroom looks like. If it's good, you're going to shop. If it's not, you're going to leave."

Buc-ee's restrooms are clean – and large. The store on I-35 in New Braunfels, Texas, has 33 urinals and 50 full-door toilet stalls, according to the Washington Post. Employees clean restrooms constantly.

"It's a big deal to them," Villareal says. "It's what they built their name on, having clean restrooms."

In 2012 the New Braunfels store won the " America's Best Restroom Award ," from Cintas, a cleaning supplies company. Buc-ee's has "some of the most spotless loos in the Lone Star State," Cintas said.

Buc-ee's are big – but how big are they?

There are 47 Buc-ee’s locations across the U.S., 34 in Texas and 13 in other states. All of them are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The largest travel center, in Sevierville, Tennessee, is 74,707 square feet, about 23% larger than a football field. It has 350 employees .

But Sevierville won't be the largest Buc-ees's for long. A new store, 75,000 square feet , is being built in Luling, Texas. By comparison, the average size of a Walmart Supercenter is 179,000 square feet .

Buc-ee's are busy places. "There's always a ton of people there, but everybody seems to be getting where they're going," Villareal says. "You don't have to wait too long for something. It speaks volumes to the efficiency of the place."

Buc-ee's is expected to add more locations , including those listed below. Buc-ee's has not confirmed all these locations, which have been reported by local news sources.

  • Johnstown, Colorado | 2024
  • Hillsboro, Texas | 2024
  • Smiths Grove, Kentucky | 2024
  • Amarillo, Texas | 2025
  • Boerne, Texas | 2025
  • Ruston, Louisiana | 2025
  • Rockingham County, Virginia | 2025
  • Marion County, Florida | 2025
  • New Kent County, Virginia | 2027
  • DeForest, Wisconsin | Not known
  • Huber Heights, Ohio | Not known

Buc-ee's tends to favor sites in less-populated areas on well-traveled interstates, Lenard says.

"But even if Buc-ee's announces today they're coming to a town near you, it'll be several years before it becomes reality," he says. "There's a large amount of work that goes into the buildings, highway ramps and infrastructure."

Where can I find a Buc-ee's?

Why is buc-ee's so popular.

A quick list of fan favorites include:

Popular Buc-ee's food items include brisket sandwiches, beef jerky and Beaver Nuggets , reported the Knoxville News Sentinel, which sampled a number of items at the Sevierville store opening.

"The food is great," Villareal says. "The brisket egg tacos and the kolaches are really good."

The food and Buc-ee's merchandise are enough to make customers stay a while. "A visit to the average convenience store is 3 to 4 minutes," Lenard says. "The average visit at a Buc-ee's is probably 30 minutes or more."

Many of the stores offer non-ethanol gasoline, charging stations for electric vehicles, and car washes.

When will Kentucky get its second Buc-ee's?

No official opening date has been posted yet, but the new store will likely open sometime during the summer of 2024, a Buc-ee's spokesperson said in an email. A sign posted outside the site of the new location said it would be "opening soon" as of Saturday.

Buc-ee's is firmly rooted in Texas

Buc-ee's "is kind of a cultural thing," Villareal says. "It's from Texas and there's a certain amount of Texas pride that goes with it."

Buc-ee's founder Arch "Beaver" Aplin III grew up in Texas and worked at his grandfather's general store in Harrisonburg, Louisiana, during holidays and summers.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in building construction from Texas A&M in 1980 , Aplin opened his first Buc-ee's, a 3,000-square-foot convenience store between Clute and Lake Jackson, Texas , in 1982. He later partnered with Texas businessman Don Wasek.

Their company opened its first large-sized Buc-ee's travel center in Luling, Texas, in 2003 . More and bigger stores have been built, but Aplin and Wasek still own 100% of Buc-ee's.

Where did the Buc-ee's logo come from?

Aplin says the company's name and beaver with a cap logo came from his childhood. Beaver was Aplin's nickname as a kid, he told CBS News. It was related to a 1950s cartoon character called " Bucky Beaver " who was used in Ipana toothpaste commercials.

Aplin coined the name and logo by combining his nickname with the name of his beloved dog Buck , he told the Shreveport Times.

The beaver isn't just a logo on a sign or merchandise. You can find beaver statues outside of Buc-ee's stores and get your picture taken with a mascot inside.

Is Buc-ee's a truck stop? No.

With its sprawling campus and more than 100 gas pumps, Buc-ee's may look like a truck stop. But it isn't.

Except for deliveries of fuel and supplies, 18-wheeled trucks aren't allowed at Buc-ee's.

How do you pronounce Buc-ee's?

The correct pronunciation is Buck-Ease. Saying Bee-You-Sees will mark you as an outsider.

Will another Buc-ee's open near me in the future?

A Buc-ee's planned for the Dayton, Ohio, suburb of Huber Heights is set to begin construction with a targeted opening for Winter 2025,  The Columbus Dispatch reported in May 2024 . The store would be the first Buc-ee's in Ohio. Huber Heights is about 160 miles from Louisville.

Tipping is 'not an entitlement': Should travelers stop tipping for everything?

Tipping is dead.

At least tipping, as you and I understand it. A mandatory 20% gratuity on every restaurant meal? Obligatory tips for housekeepers, concierges and tour guides? Kiss them goodbye.

And if you want to know why, just ask Gerri Hether.

Like many Americans, she's tired of the attitude that all service workers are entitled to a tip. She became exasperated with the point-of-sale terminals that solicited a gratuity before even serving her food. But then the final straw was when restaurants started to add automatic gratuities to their bills for her "convenience."

"I don't tip anymore," said Hether, a retired nurse from Mesa, Arizona.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

Americans are known for generosity and willingness to tip for good service. But a recent poll by USA TODAY's Blueprint found 63% of respondents say too many businesses are asking for tips, and 48% are tired of being asked for a gratuity.

Almost the same number of Americans (62%) in another survey said they wouldn't give service workers year-end tips, according to the digital personal finance company Achieve. The reason? Tip fatigue.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

Why Americans have had enough of tipping

An increasing number of Americans believe that tipping expectations are unfair, said Carla Bevins, an expert on business management communication at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. And that has led to a shift in public attitudes toward gratuities.

"The momentum behind the no-tipping movement stems from growing scrutiny over the fairness and necessity of traditional tipping practices," she explained.

To hear people like Ian Duncan talk about it, it's a reaction to the widespread attitude of entitlement in the hospitality industry. It's tip jars at coffee shops, laundromats and grocery stores. It's having to pay a gratuity before you even receive a meal or service.

Duncan, a small business owner from Toronto, recently booked a cruise. However, when he received his invoice several weeks before his departure, the cruise line had added more than $200 in automatic gratuities to his bill .

"That did it for me," he said. "I canceled the trip and asked for my deposit back."

Duncan said he wants to decide who and when to tip – or whether he should tip at all – and resents it when a company assumes it is entitled to a gratuity. He also doubts that the staff will receive any automatic gratuity added to his bill, which is a valid concern.

Even etiquette experts say the time has come to talk about tipping.

"Tipping evolves over time, and we are long overdue to revisit the legal and social norms for how employees are paid," said Jodi RR Smith, an etiquette expert with Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting . "Expecting individual consumers to tip generously at every turn is not a long-term plan for economic success."

Even service workers agree that it's gone too far

Even people who depend on tips understand that things have gone too far. Mike Aguirre, a blues guitarist who performs in the Caribbean, blames the new terminals that try to extract a tip from patrons before they receive their meal.

"Leaving a tip before you receive your order seems premature − no service has been rendered yet, but there is a palpable element of guilt involved," he said.

It gets worse, actually. In some places abroad, restaurant servers come to your table with a portable payment system and ask you to enter a gratuity while they watch . Talk about pressure!

But people like Aguirre are likely to suffer because of the understandable tipping backlash. Many service workers have come to depend on gratuities to earn a living. Squeezing a tip out of a customer before the meal is served or under the watchful eye of your server is hardly the fault of the employee. However, the employees are likely to pay for these misguided policies.

Even etiquette experts have limited their tipping. Etiquette consultant Rachel Wagner said she no longer tips at hotel self-serve snack bars (even when there's a tip jar), at restaurants where you order at the counter, and at airport food kiosks.

"When the terminal shows me the tipping options, I choose 'no tip,'" she said.

She calls these kinds of tips "entitlements" and isn't worried about a service worker's reaction.

"All this person has done for me is take my money and place my items in a bag," she said. "There is no need to tip!"

How to avoid tipping

Fact is, most service workers continue to rely on tips, and many believe you should always leave a gratuity. But there are ways to sidestep this unspoken obligation.

  • Go to a no-tipping business. Some hotels and restaurants advertise themselves as "no tipping." The easiest way to avoid a gratuity – and to encourage other companies to adopt sensible policies on tipping – is to give these companies your business. Have dinner at Thattu in Chicago, an Indian restaurant that pays its servers a competitive wage and doesn't solicit tips. Or Casa Bonita the Mexican Restaurant in Lakewood, Colorado, that doesn't accept gratuities.
  • Get takeout. No reasonable person expects you to tip your restaurant worker when you get takeout. So, one way to avoid leaving a gratuity is to get your next restaurant meal to go.
  • Refuse to tip. You can also send a message to a business about tipping by putting a zero in the tip line. Hether, the retired nurse who has stopped tipping, said the reaction from service workers has been one of resignation. It seems they know the system is broken, but they don't know how to fix it.

The future: Gratuities based on good service

When it comes to tipping, the future may look a lot like the past. Travelers say they don't think it's fair that they should subsidize a service worker's salary with a mandatory gratuity. But they like the traditional idea of offering a service worker a little extra for exceptional service.

Hether said she's still open to rewarding good customer service with a gratuity. But she'll never again fork over 20% of her bill out of a sense of obligation.

"Tipping should be based on exceptional service," she said. "It's not an entitlement."

‘The Bachelor’ Promises True Love. So Why Does It Rarely Work Out?

Of the 40 combined seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” only eight couples have stayed together. We spoke to former contestants and leads about roadblocks to a happy ending.

The season premiere of any installment in “The Bachelor” franchise always starts the same: with the host talking directly to camera about the lead’s almost-certain path to finding lasting love. Unlike other popular reality dating shows, the franchise markets itself as a genuine chance to find love without any other incentives like cash prizes.

But it’s actually not all that probable: Of the 40 combined seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” only eight couples have stayed together — not great betting odds.

Morale in the franchise was low going into 2023, with no recently minted couples still together, until ABC announced a hopeful new twist. “The Golden Bachelor” pledged to aid then-72 year-old Gerry Turner make the most of a second chance at love following the death of his wife. At season’s end, he proposed to Theresa Nist in a teary finale. In January their wedding was televised on ABC. By April, they’d announced plans to divorce.

That breakup felt like the last straw in believing this franchise could foster lasting love, so to look into why “The Bachelor” rarely makes good on its premise, we spoke to the former Bachelorettes Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams, as well as the former contestants Tyler Cameron and Melissa Rycroft about the flaws that doom the reality franchises’ lovebirds.

The main prize might not be the catch you thought.

Many love-related reality television shows that are on the air today — think “Love Island,” “Are You the One?” or even “Bachelor in Paradise” — allow for participants to intermingle in environments specifically designed to mimic some version of real life.

On “The Bachelor” circumstances are purposely anti-real-world dating scenarios, the better to “focus” on finding real love. The lead dates 25 or more people at once while the contestants have their sights set on that one person. Prospective love interests don’t have access to any outside distractions like cellphones, books or television.

“When you’re in that ‘Bachelor’ bubble, all you do is focus on and be brainwashed toward that person,” Tyler Cameron, the runner-up on Hannah Brown’s “Bachelorette” season, said.

Since the show is marketed as an opportunity to find love and have the lead establish separate connections with different contestants, Melissa Rycroft, from Season 13, said the competitive feel among the contestants is orchestrated by producers and not necessarily inherent to the environment.

Contestants are isolated and singularly focused on gaining the affections of one target. The competition makes it hard for contestants to know if they even like the lead. Rycroft got engaged to the bachelor Jason Mesnick at the end of his season before he broke it off to instead be with the season’s runner-up.

“They have built him up as this amazing bachelor,” Rycroft said, adding, “I finished this process not knowing a lot about him because I was more interested in making sure he wanted me and didn’t want to reject me than going through the process going, ‘Are you the one that I want to be?’”

Cameron agreed. “You kind of look past the red flags and the signs that it won’t work,” he said, “because you want to work for what you think it could be because of how great or fun the show makes it seem on the other side.”

The fairy-tale dates eventually stop.

Kaitlyn Bristowe, the Bachelorette from Season 11, got engaged at the end of her run but broke off the relationship four years later (“In Bachelor years, that’s like 40 years,” she joked.) Bristowe’s season, like many others, featured elaborate dates including multiple helicopter and yacht rides and a private fireworks display, not exactly a window into what a real-world future would look like.

Bristowe has discussed the troubles with “Bachelor” dating on her podcast, “Off the Vine.” “I always talk about the foundation of a relationship and when the foundation is that it’s built off an edited TV show, a TV show where you’re doing all these dream dates,” she said, “you don’t actually get to spend a lot of time with the person.”

So “the relationship is so built up and put on a pedestal,” she said, “and it’s manufactured, and that’s a tricky foundation to start a life on.”

There’s a letdown after the show wraps.

Tayshia Adams became the lead on Season 16 of “The Bachelorette” after Clare Crawley bowed out a few episodes in to leave with a contestant from the season. Adams got engaged to that season’s winner but that relationship ended just under a year later.

“Where there is a logistical hiccup, it’s the fact that it is a television show and you and your partner essentially have to go into hiding for months on end before the show airs,” Adams said.

“It’s not normal for people to get engaged and then be like, ‘Bye, gotta go, I’ll see you later. Oh, I don’t even have your cellphone number yet,’” she said.

Real-world logistics are hard.

When Turner and Nist announced their divorce, they cited the fact that neither of them wanted to move away from their families.

Bristowe also noted that this type of coordination can be a part of the problem.

“Logistically to live in two different cities, when you have built your foundation for who you are in a certain city, I feel like that all makes it kind of a recipe for a failed relationship,” she said.

Adams said it was important to manage expectations. The leads sign up because they’re ready to get engaged. But the real questions are, “‘Are you ready to uproot your life in order to make a relationship work if you end up in one? Are you ready to leave your job? Are you ready to leave your family? Are you ready to move? Are you ready to start over?’ That’s reality, it’s not just being in a relationship, we can all be in relationships.”

Stable relationships aren’t good TV.

“If you just look at dating shows across the board,” Bristowe said, they’re “not a perfect recipe for happiness.”

Rycroft agreed, adding: “I think what you need to create a lasting relationship is just not really good TV.”

And perhaps, it’s about changing perception — it isn’t a show about love; instead the drama is what reels people in.

“I started watching back way back when you were rooting for these people like you wanted love,” Rycroft said. “And now I’m not even sure that the audience wants a love story.”

These spiders are well-equipped to live in populated cities, researchers say

Researchers say Joro spiders are well-equipped to live in populated cities.

(Gray News) – Anyone who is afraid of small, creepy insects might think they would be safer in more populated areas.

However, one type of spider may be well-suited to live in busy city centers.

According to researchers from the University of Georgia , the Joro spider, an invasive orb-weaving spider first seen in the United States around 2013, has been successful in its spread because of its tolerance to vibrations and noise in urban landscapes .

The Joro spider is commonly seen throughout Georgia and other states in the southern region.

New research highlights how the spiders can live next to busy roads and locations that are known to be stressful for most other animals.

Researchers discovered that the Joro spiders don’t seem to be affected by the hustle and bustle of busier landscapes and seem to weigh about the same weight as other spiders in less busy locations. They also discovered that these spiders are less likely to attack simulated prey.

The researchers suggest the species can compensate for its human-dominated landscape.

The spiders often build their golden webs between power lines, on spotlights and even above gas station pumps.

The researchers used a tuning fork to mimic the vibrations of prey in more than 350 trials. The Joro spiders near busy locations attacked more than half the time, while spiders in less populated spots attacked 65% of the time.

Despite this, the researchers did not find a notable difference in the spiders’ weight, suggesting that the spiders in the busier areas were not under nourished.
