Gower Activity Centres
Schools, colleges and youth groups
We have been working closely with schools, colleges and youth groups for over 30 years and are vastly experienced in putting together bespoke programmes specific to an organisation’s needs.
Residentials
We can offer residential trips for anywhere between 10 and 50 pupils. Usually we encourage organisations to opt in to a week long residential to really develop skills and understanding, whilst some organisations opt for a split week option to accommodate greater class sizes.
During a residential trip we will have constant dialogue before and during the stay with teachers/leaders to ascertain the desired learning outcomes and whether there are any curriculum requirements. Our residential trips focus on providing individual and team skills, developing on understanding and appreciation of the surrounding environment, and putting smiles on faces.
Schools, colleges and youth groups benefit from being eligible for a subsidised stay with Gower Activity Centres – prices .
Day activities
Whether it’s working towards GCSE PE modules, John Muir Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award, or any qualifications we can put in place training and development days. Likewise, if you are just after a fun and exciting day to reward young people and give them experiences they will never forget then Gower is the place to be.
Pupil Referral Unit provision
Sometimes organisations have all the resources they need at their fingertips and either don’t realise or are nervous to undertake outdoor activities. Gower Activity Centres offer an advice service whereby we will visit organisations and develop session plans based around outdoor and nearby spaces, and deliver training and resources to staff.
Please contact us to discuss further.

The things every former schoolkid remembers about a residential trip to Borfa House in Gower
Gwent the goat, prunes and custard - and an awful lot of fun

In the picturesque village of Port Eynon, nestled amongst the sand dunes and the peaceful beachfront, lies a house which holds a special place in the hearts of many who grew up in the Swansea area.
Ty Borfa (also known by its English name Borfa House), is a 40-bed venue in Gower where countless school trips have taken place over the years. Some people have enjoyed midnight feasts there with their girl guide groups, others have experienced run-ins with a feisty resident goat called Gwen and many remember forcing down an unusual dessert of custard and prunes at dinnertime. Each generation of schoolkids have their unique memories of the popular school trip destination and its legacy continues as a publicly-run adventure centre where young people often have their first taste of independence.
The house has been refurbished and includes a large open- plan lounge area, a small dining room and bunk-style accommodation. The beachside venue gets busy from February half-term onwards and is usually fully-booked during term-time until October, hosting an average of 30 school children each week. People of all ages have fond memories of Borfa House. Allison Carpenter, 49, now lives in Huntsville, Texas, but went to Casllwchwr Primary School in Loughour while growing up in Swansea in the 1980s. Allison visited Borfa House with her school and said she still remembers it well. "I remember the fancy dress costume competition. My mother had made my costume out of a black trash bag and had cut out foil stars and moons and stuck them on. I was embarrassed to wear it but I did, and I won!," she said. The dental hygienist said she also remembered having lots of fun digging through rock pools on the beach and looking for shells and small crabs to take back to Borfa House and investigate.
Decades later, staff at the activity centre still get pupils to comb the beach and find crabs or fossils like Allison once did. Outdoor services activities manager for Swansea Council, Ceri Butcher, explained: "When [the children] arrive, one of the first things we do is rock-hop. They go along the coastline of Port Eynon. We might fight some crabs on the beach or a fossil and the instructors will talk about the natural landscape, ecology and history of Port Eynon. That first day is about getting them excited about where they are and just getting these young people outside."

A large part of Ceri's role is looking after Borfa House and driving its strategic plan. While she has enjoyed a long career running various adventure centres, she is relatively new to the service. Ceri is no stranger to Borfa House though, as she enjoyed a school trip there with her primary school in 1994. "Obviously, it has a rather emotional connection for me," said Ceri.
"We do get people come to the site over the summer. People will be at the beach and they'll walk past and gaze at the building, chatting to people about what an important part of their childhood it is. Sometimes we forget that a young person's first experience of independence is on those trips. Even though we predominantly serve the people of Swansea , it's also the first time a lot of children get out to Gower for various reasons. We have a subsidised offer for young people from Swansea on free school meals," she explained.
While Ceri remembered simply doing lots of walking on her school trip to the house in the nineties, she explained the trips now included lots of different opportunities for young people to take part in activities they might not get the chance to try otherwise.
This is what a typical week at Borfa House in 2023 might look like like:
'Rock-hopping' along the coastline at Port Eynon
Enjoying a full day of surfing at Rhossili Bay
Hiking out to Mewslade Bay near Rhossili and climbing the rocks there
Learning all about bush craft and building a den or a fire before cooking bread outside.
Trying an independent activity like orienteering or going on a scavenger hunt
Remembering Gwen the Goat and other things...
While times have changed and some traditions have been lost, when WalesOnline posted about Borfa House on our SwanseaOnline Facebook page, lots of readers shared their memories of school trips to Borfa House like they had visited the place only yesterday. Gwen the resident goat was mentioned quite a bit, with one person, Ribbon Ribbonesk commenting: "There was a swing out the back and a goat. I got butted in the bum by the goat!"
Gemma Davies wrote: "I'm 50 next month and always remember a goat called Gwen eating my woolen purse with money in it many moons ago." When Brian Young visited the house with his school, one dish in particular stuck with him. "Everyone that went in my school group remembers one thing in particular.... prunes and custard on our first night. We were all scarred for life having to force them down."
For Ceri, Borfa House is a place where young people can get outside and learn new things about the natural resources we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep. "I think that the local authority has done a really good job at protecting the service for a long time. When you consider what's happened to publicly-run outdoor centres in the UK. For Swansea , that service has always been very important.
"I think that it is a really important part of our educational journeys as young people in Swansea. It's that first taste of independence and it brings back really strong memories with our friends. We learn where we're from and challenge ourselves to do new things. I think anyone who takes a moment to reflect on their time in Borfa will be forced to admit that it was a really important moment in their time in school and continues to be with every generation that comes," she said.

Other Memories of Borfa:
Here are some of the other memories of visits to Borfa that have been shared with us:
Sophie Turner: "There was always a talent show, although we did a performance for the teachers every time they came in to check if we had made our beds each morning. We also played rounders on the beach and I remember we all got scared by some kid saying they had seen a ghost in their room."
Tony Colby: "Yes! Loved my time there. I remember the Olympics was on, we were allowed to watch a bit in the nights. Wanna say 88.. Was with Pentrechwyth primary."
Alison Lenihan: "Went from Clase Junior school when we were in the 4th Form. Funny story about what us girls were told to pack 'incase' because of the climate change! And also going to those little chalets in Parkmill, from Mynyddbach School. Great fun for kids. Hope they still go.
Louise Thomas: "Stayed there with Ynystawe girl guides. Had a midnight feast. Loved it."
Debbie Vice: "Yep, went for a midnight walk we thought it was great."
Helen Davies: "I remember going for the long weekend trip to Borfa and one of my class mates had an appendicitis - because it has snowed she had to go up the hill on the milk float because the ambulance couldn’t get down."
Daniel Thomas: "Yes went there in 80s , I had a row for letting the goat free!!!"
Danielle Roberts: Getting stuck in that bull field was one I won't forget. Mrs Bennett 'no we won't need wellies'."
Gareth Hartnoll: "The red lady apparently haunted the place."

What will students see and do.
Kilvrough Manor is one of three Oxfordshire Education Authority outdoor activity centres. It offers school residential trips with expert-led adventure activities.
Kilvrough Manor has a long history, with the estate dating back to 1585. The castellated Georgian country house is a Grade II listed building in Pennard Swansea, on the Gower Peninsula in southwest Wales.
The Gower Peninsula has a picturesque landscape that is adored by nature lovers, sunbathers, and surfers. It was the first place in the United Kingdom to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The geography of the Gower Peninsula lends itself to a variety of course options. Learning environments include rocky shores, spectacular beaches, freshwater streams and canals, formal gardens, woodlands, moorlands, salt marshes and sand dunes.
There are many challenging and enjoyable outdoor learning activities offered. Course options include:
– Rock climbing and abseiling on local coastal cliffs – Caving to explore rock formations – Open canoeing along the canal – Coastal exploration by land or tandem sit-on kayaks – Bodyboarding and/or surfing – Beach art – Rock pooling – Camping and other expeditions – Problem-solving and teambuilding exercises
Expert staff will lead students as they work to achieve predetermined goals, overcome obstacles, and build lifelong memories.
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
Kilvrough Manor offers quality residential outdoor learning experiences. It also offers a wide array of study-based courses at primary and secondary levels.
The expert staff will work with you to develop a course that meets your educational goals. Course leaders recommend teachers work with their students to set academic and achievement goals as they plan their trip. Working toward these goals begins on arrival as tasks are assigned.
Your outdoor learning programme may include subjects like local geography and science, supported by activities like rock pooling along the coast. But the primary focus of Kilvrough Manor’s activities is character education, teamwork and resilience.
Subjects covered
Teaching resources provided.
Kilvrough Manor staff will discuss your educational goals with you as you plan your trip. This helps ensure school trips to Kilvrough Manor fulfil your learning objectives.
The centre provides several pre- and post-visit exercises for KS2 and KS3 learners in downloadable PDF documents.
Oxfordshire Outdoors also offers a series of downloadable PDFs for teachers and group leaders to help with logistical and education planning for school trips to Kilvrough Manor. The planning PDFs cover topics like pre-planning educational goals, organisational tasks and responsibilities.
The team also offers pre-formatted student permission forms and packing lists for your convenience.
Minimum and maximum group size
The manor house at Kilvrough Manor can accommodate up to 60 students on school residential trips. The dorm rooms accommodate four, five, six or eight students and are arranged on single-gender floors. Accompanying staff/adults will have separate rooms nearby.
School trips must have a minimum of 12 students, up to a maximum of 60. Students will divide into smaller activity groups like this:
– 12-24 students: two groups – 25-36 students: three groups – 37-48 students: four groups – 49-60 students: five groups
Students will have assigned responsibilities for care and upkeep on school residential trips. They’ll be divided into five duty groups to take care of basic housekeeping (like setting tables for meals). You will determine group assignments and note them on the “participant essential information form”.
Details of risk assessment
The team can provide safety practices and accreditation information about the centre to assist in developing your risk assessment. Centre staff can answer any additional questions you may have.
Kilvrough Manor is ACYPSA licensed, and holds current licenses from the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA).
Kilvrough Manor also meets the AHOEC Gold Standard (Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres), incorporating the LOtC Quality Badge (Learning Outside the Classroom).
Don't miss our downloadable A-Z guide on completing a risk assessment
Facilities on-site
Kilvrough Manor sits on private grounds. Its ten acres include gardens, lawn and woodland. The house has same-sex dormitory rooms for up to 60 students. There are private rooms for staff.
The manor house also offers a lounge with a television, wifi and a large dining facility. All meals are provided by the catering centre, which has earned the local Environmental Health Offices’ Silver Award.
Outdoors, you’ll also find a fire pit, BBQ areas and activity areas. Drying facilities are provided, along with a well-equipped classroom/fieldwork facility.
The venue provides all equipment needed for outdoor learning activities.
Opening times
Kilvrough Manor is open year-round, offering outdoor learning opportunities in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
A visit to Oxfordshire Outdoors costs £330 per student. Winter rates are available at a substantial discount.
Kilvrough Manor allows one free accompanying staff/adult space for every 10 students.
There’s a non-refundable deposit of £75 per party member (not including free adult/staff members) due six months prior to your arrival. You’ll receive an invoice for the remaining balance after confirming final attendance numbers four weeks prior to your course date.
All Oxfordshire outdoor activity centres, including Kilvrough Manor, will charge for the number of students booked. It’s recommended that you book the minimum number of students. If needed, you can add more after placing your order (up to four weeks ahead of your trip).
The centre offers information about Pupil Premium and PE and Sports Premium for primary schools. These opportunities can help close the gap between disadvantaged students and their peers by helping cover the cost of UK school trips for outdoor learning activities. That includes school residential trips to Kilvrough Manor.
Travel arrangements
Oxfordshire Outdoors can arrange transportation as part of the booking for some UK school trips. This includes groups coming from Oxfordshire state-funded schools and academies located within Oxfordshire. There’s no need to make direct contact with the transport provider. Direct all enquiries to the centre.
Kilvrough Manor is a four-hour drive from London along the M4 to the A483. It’s a three-and-a-half-hour coach ride from Oxfordshire by way of the A420 to the M4 and the A483. It’s a 20-30 minute drive from Swansea along the A4118.

Residential & Day Trips
School trips often form the most memorable experiences for children at school, providing learning in a different setting, breaking from routine and exploring the world around them.
We aim to make the most of living in such a vibrant, diverse and cultural capital city through regular trips throughout the year; including attending a chemistry workshop at the Royal Institute, filming a TV news report on a green screen at SKY studios and enjoying a behind the scenes tour of the Globe theatre!
The real excitement occurs at our annual residential trips:
- Year 4 embark on a 2-day trip to Flatford Mill in Suffolk with a focus on natural science.
- Year 5 head to York to explore medieval history (including an all-important workshop on chocolate making!)
- Year 6 go to France for some language immersion as well as visits to important sites from WWI and WWII.
- Year 7 tackle their geography fieldwork studies over 5 days in Calshot, Hampshire
- Year 8 take to outdoor activities at Skern Lodge, Devon, to enjoy a week of kayaking, abseiling, climbing, tunnelling, rafting and surfing!
In addition the THS Cricket Tour is a major highlight in the school calendar for staff, boys and parents! All Year 7 and Year 8 boys are invited to join the tour, irrespective of ability and this memorable trip offers a perfect blend of stunning natural beauty and the deep-rooted Barbadian culture and passion for cricket.
In advance of this trip the boys are expected to raise funds to buy cricket kit that is donated to disadvantaged Barbadian children’s cricket clubs. This is a key part of the ethos of this trip, as is meeting and socialising with the local players.
