KEY POINTS:
Forty-two people have received medical treatment after their cruise ship rolled sharply in heavy seas caused by the storm sweeping New Zealand. The storm has lashed New Zealand and is currently drenching the South Island. P&O cruises said the ship Pacific Sun was hit by 7 metre swells and 50 knot winds when it suddenly rolled 600km north of Auckland just before 8pm yesterday. A spokesperson said onboard medical staff treated about 40 passengers as a result of the sudden movement. The ship was due in Auckland this morning but the bad weather has delayed its arrival by 24 hours. Maritime authorities are monitoring the cruise liner which is now sitting about 300 nautical miles (540km) north east of New Zealand. The vessel's crew reported that 42 passengers have received medical attention after the vessel was hit by the severe weather conditions and suffered a sudden heavy roll around 8pm last night. The vessel, carrying 1732 passengers and 671 crew, was en route to Auckland following an eight day cruise in the South Pacific. The New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre has asked the ship to send regular updates on its status. The vessel has not reported that it is in distress. A Maritime NZ safety inspector will visit the vessel to check on her when she arrives in port, which is scheduled for tomorrow. Passengers emailing the Herald from the Pacific Sun said the sudden movement had caused a mess in parts of the ship. But some families in New Zealand told the Herald that email from the ship was only intermittent and it is hard to get in touch with the Pacific Sun, except by satellite phone. Cerise Jordan emailed the Herald to say that her mother is on board the liner. "She has confirmed that there are a number of passengers injured. Most with varying degrees of bruising. She stated clearly that the staff have been fantastic in extremely difficult circumstances. "Last night when the ship rolled she and her party were in the casino. They were injured as a result of machines coming loose and rolling into them. When in the dining hall the ship rolled again and she said all the crockery went flying." Some of the families of injured passengers on board a cruise ship battered by rough seas north of Auckland have heard about their loved ones through the media. ";Kim"; from Christchurch is trying to contact her elderly father, sister and friends on the cruise. She says they were told this morning that the ship was going to be delayed 24 hours because of the weather, but did not know about the injuries until listening to news bulletins. - NZ Herald Staff, NewstalkZB.

Pacific World Review
Review of pacific world.
The 1995-built (as "Sun Princess") cruise ship Pacific World is the first Sun-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet - with sisterships Dawn Princess (now Pacific Explorer) and Sea Princess (now Dream Charming) . The same name now carries the 2024-built Sun Princess .
In mid-September 2020, Princess Cruises sold Sun Princess. The company announced that the liner will leave the fleet in 2021 and will be renamed "Pacific World". The new shipowner will charter the vessel to Peace Boat. The 1983-founded, Japan-based global non-government organization (NGO) Peace Boat organizes educational cruises (floating university) as well as global events-themed conferences at sea. Also sold was Sea Princess whose shipowner now is Sanya International Cruise Development Company (China).
- A total of 23x Sun Princess cruises were canceled - departures on itineraries planned for the period December 28, 2020, through August 14, 2021. The ship was planned for deployment in Australia-New Zealand (January-March 2021) and Alaska (May-August 2021 / roundtrips from Vancouver BC Canada and Los Angeles California USA).
- The canceled voyages included roundtrips from Brisbane QLD (14-day New Zealand, 10-day Papua New Guinea, 4- day Australia Getaway, 10-day Tasmania), also repositioning cruises (15-day Brisbane to Fremantle, 1 2-day Fremantle to Singapore, 12-day Singapore to Yokohama, 2 8-day Singapore to Vancouver, 16-day Yokohama to Vancouver, 4-day Vancouver to Los Angeles) and Alaskan roundtrips (7-day Inside Passage with Glacier Bay from Vancouver and 1 4-day Inside Passage with Hubbard Glacier from Los Angeles).
On October 5, 2020, the vessel left its anchorage off Bandar Penawar (Johor, Malaysia) en route to Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and Manila (Philippines) . In December, the ship arrived in China. As of November 29, it was docked at Husuntou (Qushan Island) located north of Daishan Island (Daishan County, China's Zhejiang Province, Zhoushan Archipelago/prefecture-level city). On April 9, 2021, the boat arrived and anchored off Qushan Island, China.
Note: In mid-June 2020, Carnival Corporation (shipowner) announced that intends to sell 13 ships in FY2020 - instead of the previously expected global fleet optimization planned over the next 3-5 years. In mid-September, Carnival increased the number of its cruise ships for sale to 18 (some were scrapped ).
For Princess Cruises, the vessel (IMO number 9000259) was Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310438000) and registered in Hamilton . Sun Princess was last drydock refurbished in 2018, and registered (in 1995) to Astramar SpA. Currently, the boat is Panama-flagged (MMSI 357189000).
History - construction and ownership
Princess Cruises is a US cruise company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (founded 1977), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - world's largest passenger shipping company. Among Princess Cruises assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .
When the 1950-passenger ship Sun Princess debuted in 1995, she was not only the Princess fleet's largest but also the industry's biggest-ever cruise vessel . Together with the other Sun-class ships which followed (Sea Princess, Dawn Princess and Ocean Princess) - the vessel was outfitted with innovative features and facilities, which created a revolutionary effect on the industry, and served as a precursor to Princess' later establishment of Grand-class ships. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, Sun Princess has been a bit bypassed by more recent Princess innovations. Personal Choice Dining is unveiled long after the liner was designed and so the concept of versatility is not as smoothly incorporated into the dining venue scenario. Standard rooms, while effectively appointed, might be a narrow fit for a couple, and the 400 verandas are less than abundant when compared to newer vessels in the fleet.
Sun Princess underwent a USD 30 million drydock refit from April 5-18, 2016. The 14-day dry dock in Singapore added the new Princess Luxury Bed to cabins and Curtis Stone's Share restaurant. Kai Sushi was transformed into Kai Seafood Bar. Other additions include Amuleto Café, NZ Natural ice cream outlet and Legends sports bar, showing tennis, weekly AFL and NRL football matches on LED screens.
Peace Boat's cruise itineraries
For Princess Cruises, Sun Princess itinerary program was based on Australia and New Zealand voyages leaving from homeports Sydney NSW and Fremantle-Perth (Western Australia) .
For Sun Princess' last itineraries (planned for 2021 - all canceled) see the ship's Wiki section .
On August 24, 2023, Peace Boat's Pacific World started from Yokohama a 105-day around-the-world cruise itinerary visiting a total of 24 ports/destinations in the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe (Iceland, Baltic, Mediterranean), North Africa (Egypt), Asia. The route included transits of unique waterways like the Panama Canal , Egypt's Suez Canal and Canada's St Lawrence Seaway .
Decks and Cabins
Most Sun Princess staterooms (1011 total, in 27 categories) are 145-ft2 Insides cabins (396). Almost 80% of the ship's outside staterooms have private step-out balconies. There are a total of 19 wheelchair-accessible (ADA) staterooms designed for passengers with disabilities. The largest staterooms are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2).
The boat has 15 decks , of which 11 passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
Sun Princess food options are generally good and guests have enough variety to be satisfied, without having to pay for speciality dining. Vegetarian selections are excellent, desserts - superb. A good selection of healthy items is provided every night. Waiters are friendly and helpful. The Regency Dining Room offers breakfast and lunch, but most passengers opt for the casual Horizon Court buffet or freshly baked pizzas at the Italian Verdi's pizzeria. The popular dining venue, Horizon Court, is open 24 hours a day. Horizon Court is situated one deck above ship's swimming area. The buffet is tiny by new-ship standards but offers excellent breakfast options from 4 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., along with an abundance of fruits and bread, and European specialities. Terrace Grill offers BBQ, hotdogs, salads and chips by the pool.

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built Sun Princess ship was christened by godmother Lady Dorothy Sterling - wife of Lord Jeffrey Sterling (Chairman of P&O Cruises ). Sun was the company's oldest vessels (Sun-class) with sisterships Dawn (now Pacific Explorer) and Sea (now Dream Charming) .
Fun fact is that this liner was featured in the TV series "The Love Boat: The Next Wave" (with Robert Urich in the main role). Another fun fact is that the ship was reported in October 2007 to be the largest vessel passing under Sydney Harbour Bridge ( Port Sydney, NSW Australia ). At low tide, the vessel entered Sydney Harbour with about 2,5 m (8,2 ft) distance between its highest point and the arch bridge.
During Tokyo Olympics 2020, for 19 days the liner was scheduled to be chartered by JTB (travel agency) as hotel ship docked at Port Yokohama (Yamashita Pier), with a night on the "cruise ship hotel" between USD 300-3500 per person.
In September 2020, Sun Princess was sold by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). During its Princess Cruises service, the vessel (IMO number 9000259) was Bermuda- flagged (MMSI number 310438000) and registered in Hamilton .

P&O Pacific Sun – Rough Week for Cruise Ship Passengers
Share this article.
Passengers aboard the P&O cruiser ‘Pacific Sun’ got a little more than they bargained for when the vessel got caught in the middle of a powerful storm off the coast of New Zealand earlier this week. The vacation quickly turned to chaos when 23ft. seas and 50 knot winds tossed the ship violently. UK’s Telegraph reports:
At least 42 people were hurt as the P&O ship Pacific Sun ran into an intense storm almost 400 miles north of New Zealand. Injuries included broken ribs and limbs, a fractured pelvis, a broken collar bone, and cuts and gashes. P&O denied reports that some people had lost fingers.
The ship, with 1732 passengers and 671 crew, was returning to Auckland from the islands of Vanuatu at the end of an eight-night cruise. The incident occurred just after dark, as many of the passengers were sitting down to dinner. In an email sent from the ship during the storm, one terrified passenger wrote: “We are nearly on our side.
Although the intensity of the storm was highly unpredictable, P&O is planning on offering vacationers compensation for the ordeal.
Also in the news this week, two cruise ships carrying hundreds of passengers collided in the Greek port Piraeus, Athens. According to the International Herald Tribune ;
The Malta-flagged Zenith, carrying 1,819 passengers and 619 crew, hit the Greek-flagged Aegean Pearl as the Zenith attempted to tie up in the port. The Aegean Pearl was carrying 504 passengers and 349 crew members, the ministry said. Nobody was injured but port authorities were not allowing them to sail until the damage to both ships was assessed, the ministry said. It said passengers remained on board as the ships were not in any danger.
This incident, along with other similar incidents in the past month, has been blamed on inadequate infrastructure in the country’s ports.

Pacific Sun's Useless Facts and Figures
By Pikachu052 , August 29, 2009 in P&O Cruises ( Australia )
Recommended Posts
Here is some useless, and minutely interesting facts on the Pacific Sun. There are:
- 72 chefs, cooks and bakers prepare more than 8,600 meals a day for passengers and crew
- Pacific Sun had a makeover in 2008 at a cost of A$10 million
- On an average South Pacific cruise, Pacific Sun’s culinary masters will use around: 50,000 eggs, 1000kg of bacon, 2800kg of chicken, 1000kg of lettuce, 2500kg of rice, 375kg of coffee, 1500 kg of pineapples and 5000 litres of milk.
- With a length of 223m, Pacific Sun is equivalent to three 747 jumbo jets lined up in a row
The passenger capacity is 1900 and about 600 crew. That works out to roughly 20 eggs each. Who is eating all of those eggs???
No wonder I come home fatter.....:eek::eek:

I could imagine people getting told off for using it!
Worth the risk though;)
Sorry its a secret, cant tell! lots of fun when you do find it but very frustrating for cruisers who have not found it,especially those who have cruised on her more than once with no joy:D
Speed: Maximum 21 knots
Passenger cabins: 740 cabins in total – incl 10 suites with balconies; 432 standard outside cabins; 298 standard inside cabins :D
I found it and used it several times although we did get some funny looks going through.
It is a legal door way I think as we never got told off for using it.

I was thinking more along the lines of kids going up and down that would get told off!
That is of course "if" there is only "One" secret staircase" and we are talking about the same "one"!:D
I am sure we are though;)
My one was a spiral staircase.

last time I was on the sun some who discovered it got told off in a big way! and warned. i dont know what they would do to punish you  but as u say Den it is worth it!

I will be using it for sure on my next cruise!:D
But could see problems if lots started to use it all the time:eek:

Maybe there were too many using it? All the more reason to keep it secret..:D
Not sure if there is a secret staircase on the Sun Princess or dawn princess. I checked but couldn't find a door way.
Yes probably best ti keep it a secret then if people are getting told off for using it, I thought it was ok seeing as many people were using it.

Shocking footage shows Pacific Sun cruise ship chaos
FOOTAGE has emerged showing passengers and furniture being thrown around Aussie cruise ship.
ADF on standby to help stranded Aussies
Iconic Aussie island now a ‘ghost town’
ALARMING footage has emerged showing passengers and furniture being thrown around inside of a cruise ship during a storm.
P&O’s Pacific Sun cruise liner was hit with huge waves about 650 kilometres off the coast of New Zealand in July 2008.
The Australian cruise liner violently rolled during the incident, injuring 42 of the 2403 passengers and crew onboard.
CCTV footage from inside the ship, made public by website Liveleaks today, shows passengers and crew being tossed around the room along with chairs, tables and various other items.
One woman is seen hitting her head on a pillar and collapsing.
Injuries sustained included broken ribs and limbs, a fractured pelvis and cuts.
Many of the worst injuries were caused when gambling machines crashed on top of people.
Holidaymaker Elizabeth Basher told of how she sustained a fractured knee during the incident.
"We were getting a pre-dinner drink at the bar, moved to a safe place to be on the carpet to get some traction, and suddenly it happened, and we were just thrown across towards a plate-glass window," she told the UK’s Telegraph .
Others recalled hearing screams and cries and said it was “like being in a disaster movie”.
The ship was returning from the islands of Vanuatu after an eight-night cruise.
It was turning into the storm when its side was hit with huge waves, causing it to violently roll, shortly after dark when many people were sitting down to dinner.
A second video taken below deck shows heavy equipment, including a forklift, being tossed around like toys and narrowly missing a crew member.
A spokesman for Carnival Australia, who represents P&O, denies the footage is new and says the ship encountered “extreme” circumstances.
“A series of waves buffeted the ship, having an impact for people onboard,” spokesman David Johns said.
“This was an exceptionally rare occurrence.”
“The incident was fully investigated and lessons learnt have been heeded, including the securing of tables and other furnishings aboard.”
Passengers and crew were offered counselling.
The ship was not badly damaged.

Health officials to meet P&O cruise in Southampton after 'gastrointestinal' illness outbreak
- Southampton
- Saturday 18 May 2024 at 11:52am
Cruise passengers on a ship that left Southampton are having to isolate after an illness broke out on board.
A number of people have suffered a stomach bug on P&O Cruises Ventura.
The vessel, which has a capacity for 3,200 passengers, set off from Southampton on Saturday 11th May on a two-week trip around the Canary Islands.
Sanitation measures on the ship have been enhanced to protect the wellbeing of guests.
One passenger online said they were alerted to the issue by an email before they boarded while another posted on Facebook to say 'cleanliness is second to none'.
ITV News Meridian understand Port Health Officials will meet the ship when it returns on Saturday 25th May.
A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said, "Ventura left Southampton on May 11, 2024 for a 14 night cruise around the Canary Islands.
"Upon embarkation all guests were provided with an advisory notice with precautionary health measures for on board and on shore, as is standard procedure across our fleet.
"P&O Cruises swiftly implemented approved and enhanced sanitisation protocols to uphold the welfare of everyone onboard.
"Alongside the above, a further enhanced and extended sanitisation took place on May 17 in Tenerife.
"Ensuring the health and wellbeing of all guests and crew is our absolute priority. It is important to note the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported of a current increase in cases across the U.K. as a whole."

Rotary volunteers stranded after Air Vanuatu collapse offered luxury cruise home as P&O comes to the rescue
A group of Australian volunteers stranded on the island of Tanna following the collapse of Air Vanuatu last week have been offered a way to get home, and they'll be travelling in style.
The contingent of young volunteers from the Albury-based Hive Rotary Club were volunteering in the Pacific when Air Vanuatu collapsed.
The group has now managed to secure a charter flight from Tanna to Port Vila and will then board a P&O cruiseliner to Sydney after the shipping company reached out to them.
Hive president Kellie Kadoui said the group was "rapt" to have found a way home.
"Once we learnt that Air Vanuatu weren't flying, it's almost impossible to get off Tanna unless you charter a very expensive plane," she said.
"We finally got a charter flight out on Wednesday through Vanuatu Tourism, so they paid for that cost.
"And then P&O reached out to us and said, 'We are actually docking in Port Vila on the 17th. Can we take you home?'"
Twenty members of the group are expected to board the Pacific Adventure today and will arrive back in Sydney on May 23.
An expensive trip home
The volunteers heard the airline was in trouble after they flew into Port Vila on Sunday, May 5.
On Thursday, May 9, the airline announced that all of its international flights were cancelled .
The next day, Ernest & Young confirmed that it had been appointed as administrators for the airline, which has been supported by the Vanuatu government for some time.
The young volunteers were scheduled to fly with Air Vanuatu from Tanna to Port Vila on Saturday, May 18, and then take a connecting flight back to Australia.
But, Ms Kadaoui said, once the airline's flights were cancelled, the volunteers only had two options — either to wait for a boat that made two trips a week from Tanna to Port Vila, or pay for an expensive private charter flight that would cost $5,000 for the whole group.
It was a relief when Vanuatu Tourism and P&O came to their rescue.
Twenty-year-old Sarah Long, one of the volunteers on the trip, said the uncertainty had been "a little chaotic for a while" and that it was nice to know that they finally had a way to get home.
"We were sort of up in the air and unsure what was going on but I think we're all very thankful for P&O coming to the table," she said.
However, Ms Kadaoui said the group still faced out-of-pocket expenses totalling about $10,000 because their travel insurance would not cover extra expenses accrued during their unexpected stay in Port Vila, or the rescheduling costs of their domestic flights in Australia once the group arrives back in Sydney.
Airline in 'significant financial distress'
Ernst & Young have told creditors Air Vanuatu is in "significant financial distress".
A liquidators' report outlined the airline's debts, which total $110 million.
"The company's financial position is dire, and it clearly cannot fund its own operations," the report said.
Ernst & Young thanked Vanuatu's government for its financial support, without which they said there would be "no other choice" but to shut the airline down.
The report also revealed Air Vanuatu's staff doubled as essential ground operations personnel at several of the country's airports.
Only two of the airline's planes remain flight-ready, with a Boeing 747 repossessed, and three other aircraft needing maintenance.
