Golfers with the most PGA Tour wins of all-time

The all-time PGA Tour wins list is full of golf legends from multiple generations of the game from Tiger Woods at the turn of the century to Walter Hagen in the early 1900s.

The 2021 PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson , who left the PGA Tour, also ranks among the winningest golfers ever, but do continue reading to learn more about several other giants of the game who deserve their due recognition and rank in the top 10 for the most PGA Tour wins.

Golden moment: Phil Mickelson wins PGA, makes history

Here is the list of golfers with the most PGA Tour wins.

T10. Tom Watson & Cary Middlecoff, 39 PGA Tour wins

T10. Tom Watson & Cary Middlecoff, 39 PGA Tour wins

When Tom Watson was at his best, so was Jack Nicklaus, making it that much more tougher for Watson during his prime in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. He was a pure ball-striker and phenomenal putter in his heyday, and had the game to travel anywhere and thrive under any conditions, good or bad.

Of his 39 PGA Tour victories, Watson won The Open Championship five times and was a steady winner during his PGA Tour career. One of those Open Championships that is forever remember is Watson’s victory in 1977 between him and Nicklaus in the ‘Duel in the Sun.’ Both were 10 shots ahead of the field at one point and Watson birdied four of his final six holes to capture the Claret Jug.

Even after his supposed prime was over, Watson won the Nicklaus-hosted Memorial Tournament in 1996 — nearly nine years removed from his last PGA Tour win — and got one more “W” at Colonial in May 1998.

Cary Middlecoff, who chose golf after a career as a dentist, won three majors and actually got his first win as an amateur at the 1945 North and South Open, which was a big tournament at the time. In the 1950s, Middlecoff racked up 28 victories, and only played 15 seasons on tour. That’s a much shorter tenure than most players on this list.

Despite playing a decade and a half on the PGA Tour, he accumulated more money during his PGA Tour career than Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and anyone during the 50s. He was one of the best in his generation in driving, with his long irons and his putting.

T8. Phil Mickelson & Walter Hagen, 45 PGA Tour wins

T8. Phil Mickelson & Walter Hagen, 45 PGA Tour wins

Phil Mickelson’s 2021 PGA Championship triumph made him the oldest major champion at 50 years old and it tied Walter Hagen for eighth on the all-time PGA Tour wins list.

Mickelson, who was was already a Hall of Famer, had little left to prove at this stage of his career. Nevertheless, he’s continued to grind and has proven he can still compete with the world’s best by winning a major.

All that’s really missing from his resume is a U.S. Open victory, and he should still have at least a few years left to take a crack at that. However, with his move to LIV Golf , it makes his chances to complete the career Grand Slam that much more difficult because of the less amount of tournaments to play in before America’s National Tournament.

As for Hagen, well, he burst onto the scene at the 1914 U.S. Open for his first PGA Tour victory in his early 20s and never looked back as he was one of the best players in the early 20th century. He won at a prolific rate, and became a pioneer for endorsements and higher prize money. Hagen was also golf’s first-ever millionaire.

Hagen’s best years came during the 1923 and 1924 seasons when he won five events each. Furthermore, Hagen won the Western Open five times, which at the time was the third biggest event behind the British Open and the U.S. Open. Speaking of the big tournaments, Hagen won 11 majors, which ranks third best, only trialing Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

7. Billy Casper, 51 PGA Tour wins

7. Billy Casper, 51 PGA Tour wins

To get a sense of how good Billy Casper was, consider that he won the PGA Tour’s Vardon Trophy five times — which is awarded each season for the lowest scoring average — and also also won at a clip of 9.2%. In golf, that’s quite an excellent percentage.

Casper was a strong chipper and putter who competed with many of the other stars on this list in their primes in the 1960s and early 70s. Because his game wasn’t as much of a superstar as, say, Nicklaus or Palmer, he often gets a little overlooked.

In fact, Casper went head-to-head with Palmer and came out on top in one of the most thrilling finishes ever.

At the 1966 U.S. Open, he was paired with Palmer for the final round. When they made the turn to the back nine, Palmer was seven strokes ahead. Amazingly, Casper rallied to tie in regulation, and then topped Palmer in an 18-hole playoff for one of his three major championships.

6. Byron Nelson, 52 PGA Tour wins

6. Byron Nelson, 52 PGA Tour wins

The achievement Byron Nelson will always be best known for is his streak of 11 straight victories in 1945, en route to an 18-win season. Just to put into perspective how dominant Nelson was in 1945, only three players have five PGA Tour wins in a single season since 2010.

Nelson’s 1945 season is one of those records that might never be achieved again. What’s crazy is, Nelson ranks this high on the all-time PGA Tour wins list despite retiring at age 34.

At the time, no one had ever even reached 50 wins on tour, so when Nelson started piling up trophies at such a crazy clip, it was truly mind-blowing at the time. Like Arnold Palmer, too, Nelson has a tournament named after him that still runs on the PGA Tour to this day.

In addition, World War II hurt Nelson’s chances to climb this leaderboard even more as majors and regular season tournaments were canceled, including the 1943-45 Masters Tournaments and the 1942-45 U.S. Opens.

5. Arnold Palmer, 62 PGA Tour wins

5. Arnold Palmer, 62 PGA Tour wins

While Tiger Woods lifted golf into another stratosphere in terms of coolness and accessibility, in the earlier days of television when golf was still searching for a solid audience, Arnold Palmer was the catalyst who helped the sport explode with popularity.

Beyond his undeniable star power, though, Palmer is one of golf’s greatest champions. Palmer, who was known as “The King,” had one of the most dominant stretches of all-time from 1960 through 1963, in which he won a whopping 32 times, including five majors. That is nearly half of his wins coming in a three-year span.

During the 1962 season, he won eight tournaments for the second time in three seasons. Since then, only three golfers have won eight or more times in a single PGA Tour season.

How all 4 golf majors are unique and provide tradition

4. Ben Hogan, 64 PGA Tour wins

4. Ben Hogan, 64 PGA Tour wins

There may never have been a better ball-striker in the history of golf than Ben Hogan. His steely determination, tireless work ethic on the driving range and perfection of his swing mechanics forged The Hawk into a nine-time major champion and prolific PGA Tour winner.

In his home state of Texas, Hogan won the Colonial National Invitation — now known as the Charles Schwab Challenge — five times. He is tied with Nicklaus, Bobby Jones and Willie Anderson with the record of four U.S. Open titles.

Hogan had his career impeded by serving in the Army during World War II and a near-fatal car accident in 1949 that caused severe injuries. As a result, his 1950 U.S. Open victory is considered one of the crowning achievements in golf and all of sports, signifying resilience and courage.

There is an award in his honor, the Ben Hogan Award, which is given to the top amateur and professional tournament results over the previous 12 months.

3. Jack Nicklaus, 73 PGA Tour wins

3. Jack Nicklaus, 73 PGA Tour wins

What’s perhaps most incredible about Jack Nicklaus’ career beyond his unmatched major total is how many close calls he actually had at the four Grand Slam events. In addition to his 18 major titles wins, the Golden Bear logged 19 runner-up finishes.

Considering how relatively close behind the all-time PGA Tour wins mark Nicklaus sits in proximity to Snead and Woods, those near-misses at majors have to sting a little more.

However, Nicklaus was one of the most mentally tough players the game has ever seen, and claims to have selective memory loss about the marquee events he lost. That’s part of what made him so great.

In total, Nicklaus won six Masters, four U.S. Opens, three Open Championships and five PGA Championships, completing the career Grand Slam several times. He and Harry Vardon are the only six-time champions at a single major.

The last time Nicklaus claimed glory at Augusta National Golf Club on a Masters Sunday, he was 46, which turned out to be his final PGA Tour victory.

Nicklaus’ best years came during the 1972 and 1973 seasons when he won seven events each. In addition to his two major wins in 1972, he started and ended his season with victories, beginning with the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am and concluding the year with a trophy at the Walt Disney World Open Invitational to encapsulate an all-around great season.

T1. Tiger Woods & Sam Snead, 82 PGA Tour wins

T1. Tiger Woods & Sam Snead, 82 PGA Tour wins

At the top of the PGA Tour wins list, there is a tie between Tiger Woods and Sam Snead, who combine for 22 major championship trophies.

Any casual sports fan knows about Woods’ dominance, which has fundamentally changed golf over the past three decades or so. Before going deep on his epic PGA Tour tenure, let’s first take a closer look at Snead.

Snead’s wins spanned from 1936 through 1965. His final victory came at the Greater Greensboro Open — now called the Wyndham Championship — for the eighth time. No one has won a single PGA Tour event as many times as Snead won that tournament, until Woods came along.

In addition to his prowess on the PGA Tour, Snead collected seven major titles to his overall win total. Snead won the Masters and PGA Championship three times apiece, as well as the Open Championship in 1946. The only leg of the career Grand Slam he missed was the U.S. Open, where he was a four-time runner-up.

OK, now let’s get into Woods. Here are the highlights from his record-tying 82nd victory at the 2019 ZOZO Championship in Japan:

Tiger has defied the odds time and time again, whether it’s recovering from major injuries, rebuilding his swing or rebounding from personal life challenges off the course. He went more than five years between victories from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2013 to his 2018 Tour Championship triumph.

That breakthrough in the FedEx Cup finale foreshadowed Woods’ return to major glory at the 2019 Masters , which is among the most incredible wins and comeback stories in sports history similar to Hogan nearly seven decades later. It marked Woods’ fifth green jacket and 15th major, putting him only three behind Nicklaus for the all-time mark.

On the PGA Tour, Woods has matched Snead’s achievement twice of winning a single event eight times at the aforementioned Bridgestone Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

With the news of Woods’ car accident in February 2021, making a comeback has been a goal of the Cypress, Calif. native to try and surpass Snead to get that elusive 83rd victory. We have seen him compete since the accident, most notably at the major tournaments as a result of on-going health issues.

Woods still wants that elusive 83rd victory as he looks to get try and get back on top at least one more time.

It is yet to be seen for Woods to get in 72 holes in four days to win in a fashion, comparable to Hogan, in order to become golf’s all-time PGA Tour wins leader. He has played four rounds in a tournament but not to a level of being in contention on Sunday.

Guinness World Records

Most PGA Tour tournament victories

Most PGA Tour tournament victories

The most tournament wins on the PGA Tour is 82, achieved by Sam Snead (USA) between 1936 and 1965, and equalled by Tiger Woods (USA) between 1996 and 2019.

Woods equalled Sam Snead’s long-standing record of 82 PGA Tour wins with victory at the Zozo Championship on 28 October 2019 at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan. His first victory occurred at the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational.

Sam Snead’s first officially recognised PGA Tour victory occurred at the one-day, 36-hole 1936 West Virginia Closed Pro, while his last was the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open. His official tally was put at 84 before being reduced to 81 by the PGA TOUR in 1987, who later settled on 82 when it recognised his triumph at the 1946 The Open Championship. Seven of Snead’s 82 wins were achieved at major championships, compared to 15 by Woods.

The 7 golfers with the most PGA Tour wins

The 7 golfers with the most PGA Tour wins

Following Tiger Woods' Tour Championship win to finish the 2018 season, he picked up his first major championship win at the 2019 Masters after an 11-year drought.

Tiger now trails Sam Snead by just one PGA Tour win.

Here are the seven players with the most PGA Tour wins of all time.

most worldwide golf tour wins

7. Billy Casper

PGA Tour wins: 51

Most wins in a year: 6 (1968)

First win: 1956 Labatt Open

Last win: 1975 First NBC New Orleans Open

Notes:  Casper won on the PGA Tour in 16 consecutive seasons, which is the second-longest run behind Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus' 17 years in a row with a win. The U.S. was undefeated in Casper's nine Ryder Cup appearances and he has the most points in the Ryder Cup of any American golfer ever.

most worldwide golf tour wins

6. Byron Nelson

PGA Tour wins : 52

Most wins in a year: 18 (1945)

First win: 1935 New Jersey State Open

Last win: 1951 Bing Crosby Pro-Am

Notes: Nelson only won one major in 1945, but his performance that season could go down as the best season in the history of the PGA Tour. His 18 wins in '45 included victories in Phoenix, Corpus Christi, New Orleans, Miami, Charlotte, Greensboro, Durham, Atlanta, Montreal, Philadelphia, Chicago, Knoxville and Seattle.

5. Arnold Palmer

PGA Tour wins : 62

Most wins in a year: 8 (1960)

First win: 1955 Canadian Open

Last win: 1973 Bob Hope Desert Classic

Notes: There was something special about Palmer at majors in years that ended in an even number. He won the Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964, along with the U.S. Open in 1960 and The Open Championship in 1962. Palmer never won the PGA Championship but he finished tied for second in 1964, 1968 and 1970.

4. Ben Hogan

PGA Tour wins : 64

Most wins in a year: 13 (1946)

First win: 1938 Hershey Four-Ball

Last win: 1959 Colonial National Invitational

Notes: Hogan had a six-year stretch from 1948 to 1953 that was as impressive as any golfer's performance in major championships. He completed the career grand slam in that span, winning eight of his nine career majors, including four victories at the U.S. Open.

3. Jack Nicklaus

PGA Tour wins : 73

Most wins in a year: 7 (1972)

First win: 1962 U.S. Open

Last win: 1986 Masters

Notes: With 18 majors, roughly a quarter of The Golden Bear's PGA Tour wins came in majors. While his peak season in terms of number of PGA Tour wins only included seven victories – the second-lowest total among players on this list – Nicklaus sustained a remarkable level of success for more than 15 years.

From 1962 to 1978, Nicklaus won at least two PGA Tour events every year and an average of four per season.

most worldwide golf tour wins

2. Tiger Woods

PGA Tour wins :  81

Most wins in a year: 9 (2000)

First win: 1996 Las Vegas Invitational

Last win: 2019 Masters Tournament

Notes: Despite ranking second on this list, Tiger Woods won fewer PGA Tour events in his 30s than the other six players. Had Tiger not had his health issues, he likely would already have the most PGA Tour wins ever and potentially put his win total out of reach for years to come.

But Tiger returned to his winning ways at the 2018 Tour Championship, winning by two shots for his first PGA Tour win in five years. He followed that with his first major championship win since 2008 by capturing the 2019 Masters.

most worldwide golf tour wins

1. Sam Snead

PGA Tour wins : 82

Most wins in a year: 11 (1950)

First win: 1936 West Virginia Closed Pro

Last win: 1965 Greater Greensboro Open

Notes: Snead's 29-year gap between his first and last wins on the PGA Tour is by far the largest of any player on this list. You could also make the case Snead was the Phil Mickelson of his day, in the sense that he was one of the best players of his era who came oh-so-close to completing the career grand slam time and time again.

Snead won seven majors but never the U.S. Open, where he finished second or tied for second in 1937, 1947, 1949 and 1953. Mickelson has five majors and six runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open.

Crunching the Numbers

Using the ‘Sam Snead criteria’ for wins, Tiger Woods actually has 95 tour titles. We'll explain

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - DECEMBER 04: during the final round of the Chevron World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club on December 4, 2011 in Thousand Oaks, California. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images)

EDITORS' NOTE—This story was first published in May 2019, shortly after Tiger Woods amazed us all once more by winning the Masters for a fifth time in his career. It was his 15th major victory, but first in nearly 11 years. It also marked the 81st time Woods had won a PGA Tour title. That left him one back of the tour's all-time win leader, Sam Snead.

In the wake of Tiger's triumph, anticipation was high regarding when Woods might tie and/or break Snead's record. (The tying win would come later that fall at the Zozo Championship .) It also caused many to revisit Snead's career, including the fact that his victory total fluctated over the years as the definition of what was an "official" PGA Tour event. And that got us wondering: Should Tiger be credited for more wins than his "official" total considering some of his "unofficial" victories look a lot like ones that counted for Snead? And so we explored …

From the time Tiger Woods won his first Masters in 1997—heck, even before that when his dad impressively (and curiously) predicted Woods would win 14 major championships—the vulnerability of Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships has been a popular golf debate. Injuries, surgeries and scandals, however, have shifted the conversation to a more attainable goal for Tiger: Sam Snead’s mark of 82 career PGA Tour titles.

While Woods’ win at the 2019 Masters finally ended a decade-plus drought in the game’s biggest events, it’s this lesser-known record that has come into focus since Major No. 15 for Tiger was also PGA Tour title No. 81. Much like a baseball team’s star player chasing 3,000 hits, the PGA Tour has built a “Chasing 82" marketing campaign around what seems like a foregone conclusion, even attaching a “Tiger Woods 82” logo to much of its shared content.

190503-tiger-chasing-82.png

But Tiger should have already broken the mark a while back, and not just because of the aforementioned obstacles that stunted his career trajectory. And, no, this isn’t another one of those, “Sam Snead’s win total is flawed” pieces. Although many have made that case quite persuasively , we’re not here to take even more titles away from a legend who took frustration over his curbed win total to his grave. Former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman put together a panel of golf historians to go through the records (made tricker due to the PGA Tour splitting from the PGA of America and establishing its own identity in 1968) in the late 1980s that wound up cutting Snead’s total from 84 to 81 before settling on 82.

Snead contended he should be credited with 89 PGA Tour titles, and “Losing those tournament wins always gnawed at him,” Snead friend and lawyer Jack Vardaman told PGATour.com . Vardaman wrote a letter to the tour on Snead’s behalf in 1996, but then commissioner Tim Finchem decided to stick with 82 as the official number. (Incredibly, Snead’s 82 PGA Tour titles account for less than half of his 165 professional wins.)

RELATED: What does Tiger's 2023 schedule look like given his latest foot injury

What can't be argued is that both Snead and Woods won PGA Tour titles at prodigious rates while displaying freakish longevity. Woods' 2019 Masters triumph came at 43 (and with a fused back) while Snead's final win came when he was nearly 53. How amazing is reaching the 80-win milestone? Consider a player would have to average four wins per season for two decades. Then consider that for more than a decade (from 1981 to 1993) no golfer won more than four times in a single season on tour. And it should be noted Woods has never shown anything but reverence for Snead's mark of 82.

But for this argument’s sake, it's also important to note that of the 82 wins that stood for Snead, a sizable portion would raise eyebrows in today’s game. There’s one, the 1937 Crosby, that was shortened to 18 holes because of weather. There are three 36-hole triumphs (today, the PGA Tour only recognizes events that went at least 54 holes as official events), including the 1946 World Championship of Golf, which only had four players in the field. There are five other Snead victories that came against fields of 16 or fewer players. And then there are the five team events that count toward Snead’s total.

Winning Again

Patrick A. Burns

Again, the point here is not to further diminish the Slammer's accomplishments. Let Snead keep those 14 wins in question and his 82 total. What we’re here to do is to point out that if Tiger got credit for similar victories, his total would be a lot higher.

Let’s start with the Hero World Challenge. Since its inception in 2000, the year-end event run by the Tiger Woods Foundation has undergone more name changes than Puff Daddy, but the tournament host winning has been a constant. At least, through 2011, when Woods won the event for a fifth time (Davis Love III and Graeme McDowell are the only other players with two wins). However, the event has never counted as an official PGA Tour event even though Official World Golf Ranking points have been awarded since 2009.

RELATED: 7 Tiger Woods stats that will blow your mind

Those who agree with its unofficial status say it’s a small field—initially, 16 players, but expanded to 18 in 2008 [it has 20 now in 2022]. However, it’s also a select one. In 2018, for instance, 16 of the world’s top 23 players competed, with Jon Rahm taking the title. The five wins Woods has in this tournament matches up quite nicely with those five Snead wins against fields of 16 or fewer, don’t you think? With these victories alone, Woods is up to 86 career tour titles.

Keeping the comps going, what about Tiger’s seven wins at the Grand Slam of Golf? At first glance, golf fans are quick to discount these as mere exhibitions, but they match two characteristics of several of Snead’s wins: It’s a 36-hole event with four golfers. Again, those are low bars, but they were deemed enough to count for Snead, in particular, that 1946 World Championship of Golf that Snead won over 36 holes and against only three opponents. Another panel feeling as generous as the one assembled more than three decades ago could add another seven to Tiger’s total, bringing it up to 93.

Some might say it’s not fair to give Woods credit for events others didn’t have access to, but on the contrary, doesn’t he deserve credit for qualifying for them? Sure, as the tournament host of the Hero he pretty much has an automatic spot, which helped in 2011 when he had fallen to No. 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, but he was either No. 1 or No. 2 during his four other wins. And he had to win a major to get into the Grand Slam all those years he won. It’s not like we’re giving him credit for being invited to participate in the Skins Game. (Although, shockingly, Woods was 0-for-7 in that silly season event.)

RELATED: This map of Tiger's career earnings by state is staggering

Oh yeah, Tiger has team titles too! And not just from Monday Night Golf! Woods won back-to-back World Cup of Golf titles in 1999 and 2000, first with Mark O’Meara, and then with David Duval. He also won the individual title at the 1999 event, but to be fair to Sam, we won't count that. Still, two World Cups brings him to 95 wins.

Of course, this is a PGA Tour record so Woods’ wins on other tours don’t count. And we’ll stop short of saying things like Woods’ win at the 2009 Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge should be considered for his total, but you get the point. Even though he's technically still "chasing 82" until his next victory, Tiger Woods has long been the true career leader in PGA Tour titles.

Sorry, Sam.

And while Woods also continues to track down Jack’s 18 majors, the PGA Tour should actually be counting down to another, more memorable number when it comes to Tiger's overall victory total. Doesn’t “Chasing 100” have a nicer ring to it?

Who has the most career wins on the PGA Tour ? Let's examine the five winningest golfers in PGA Tour history and their incredible trophy cases.

Tiger Woods , 82 WINS

With a victory at the Zozo Championship on Oct. 27, 2019, Woods won his 82nd PGA Tour victory, tying the record held by Sam Snead. His first PGA Tour win came 23 years earlier, on Oct. 6, 1996, at the Las Vegas Invitational. In Woods' fifth start as a pro, he beat Davis Love III in a sudden-death playoff. Woods holds the record for most consecutive weeks as the No. 1 golfer in the world and the record for most total weeks at No. 1. Woods is an 11-time PGA Player of the Year, which is also a record. He won 15 major championships, trailing only Jack Nicklaus' 18. Woods was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2021. For more on Woods' decades-long dominance, check out this breakdown of his PGA Tour victories .

Sam Snead , 82 WINS

Snead's longevity was extremely impressive, as his career spanned 30 years and he competed well into his 60s. In the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open, the 52-year-old became the oldest golfer to win a PGA Tour tournament -- a record he still holds today. Snead won 82 PGA Tour events and seven majors. He was the PGA Golfer of the Year in 1949 and a three-time PGA Tour money list winner. He earned the PGA Tour's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Jack Nicklaus , 73 WINS

Jack Nicklaus was widely regarded as the greatest golfer in the world during the 1960s and 1970s. He continued winning majors in the 1980s - with his final victory coming at 46 years old. Nicklaus holds the record for most major championships (18) and most Masters (six), and he's tied for the most PGA Championships (five) and U.S. Opens (four). "The Golden Bear" also finished as a runner-up 19 times in majors. From 1970 to 1979, Nicklaus never finished worse than eighth at the Masters. In 44 majors over that span, he missed just one cut. Nicklaus was a five-time PGA Player of the Year and the PGA Tour's money list winner 8 times. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Ben Hogan , 64 WINS

Hogan won nine majors -- tied for fourth most all time -- and he's one of only five golfers to win all four major championships. Hogan was a four-time PGA Player of the Year. In 1943, Hogan was drafted and joined the U.S. Army and over the next three years, he rose to the rank of second lieutenant. In 1946, he returned to the PGA Tour and won 13 events. Hogan was named the AP's Male Athlete of the Year in 1953 and inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Arnold Palmer , 62 WINS

Palmer was a fan favorite who helped golf skyrocket in popularity. He won seven majors -- with all his victories coming between 1958 and 1964 -- and he was the first golfer to win four Masters. Palmer was a two-time PGA Player of the Year and a four-time PGA Tour money list winner. He earned the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Palmer also launched many products, owned and designed golf courses, and co-founded The Golf Channel.

Who has the most wins in Tour history?

We take a closer look at the players who have the most wins in DP World Tour history.

The iconic image of Seve winning the 1984 Open at St Andrews

Just five players in history have achieved more than 30 wins on Tour.

Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomerie and Sir Nick Faldo are all certified legends of the game, and each player has proven their dominance through their number of victories on Tour, which is now named the DP World Tour.

Seve Ballesteros: 50

The late, great Seve Ballesteros remains the most decorated player in history with a record unlikely to be bested.

In a span of less than 20 years, the four-time Major Champion claimed 50 titles, starting with his first victory as a 19-year-old at the 1976 Dutch Open, where he beat Howard Clark by eight strokes.

What followed was a streak of 17 consecutive years, between 1976 and 1992, where he won at least once - totalling 47 wins which include his three Open Championship triumphed (1979, 1984, 1988) and two Masters titles (1980, 1983). The best of those years was undoubtedly the season of 1986, when he won six times, and he remains the only player to record six official tournament wins in one season.

He would then win twice in 1994, beating Nick Faldo by three shots to claim the Benson & Hedges International Open before defeating José María Olazábal and Ernie Els to win the Mercedes German Masters. His final, and 50th win, came a year later at the 1995 Peugeot Spanish Open, earning his home Open for the third time with a two win over fellow Spaniards Ignacio Garrido and José Rivero.

Bernhard Langer: 42

Bernard Langer has 116 professional titles to his name, 42 of which he won between 1980 and 2002.

Like Ballesteros, Langer earned his first European Tour title by a sizeable margin, winning the 1980 Dunlop Masters by five strokes over nearest challenger Brian Barnes at the age of 23.

He then enjoyed a streak of 16 consecutive winning years, a span which included both of his Masters victories (1985, 1993), and his notable record of becoming the first player to be ranked as World Number One when the rankings began in 1986.

His final Tour title came after a thrilling season finale at the 2002 Volvo Masters Andalucia, where the play-off between Langer and Colin Montgomerie was suspended due to darkness after two holes. They decided to share the spoils, which marked the second time Langer had opted to share a trophy – the other being the 1986 Lancome Trophy he shared with Seve Ballesteros for the same reason.

Langer has since translated his remarkable winning mentality into the senior ranks, where he has won a staggering 11 Senior Major Championships.

Tiger Woods: 41

Woods may have hit a milestone on the PGA Tour by matching Sam Snead’s tally of 82 victories, but 33 of those titles (15 Majors and 18 World Golf Championships) also amount towards his total on the DP World Tour.

His 1997 Masters triumph counts as the first of 41 wins, a number that includes eight further individual titles between 1998 and 2009.

A year later he would beat Ernie Els in a play-off to claim the Tour’s Johnnie Walker Classic for the first time, which was a title he would win again in November 2000.

He also won the Deutsche Bank – SAP Open TPC of Europe on three separate occasions (1999, 2001, 2002), as well as the Dubai Desert Classic in both 2006 and 2008.

Still actively playing, Woods recorded his latest victory during his well-documented comeback victory at the 2019 Masters Tournament.

Tiger Woods - Masters Champion!

Colin Montgomerie: 31

Colin Montgomerie has played in 626 DP World Tour events throughout his career and has the fourth highest number of wins with 31.

After being named Rookie of the Year in 1988, Montgomerie eased to his first Tour title at the 1989 Portuguese Open TPC. He won by a substantial margin of 11 strokes that matched the record at the time (later set by Woods at the 2000 U.S. Open).

He would then wait two years for his second win – a one stroke victory over Seve Ballesteros at the 1991 Scandinavian Masters, and another two before his win at the 1993 Heineken Dutch Open began a run of 10 consecutive years with at least one victory. In that time, Montgomerie claimed eight Order of Merit titles, including seven in a row between 1993 and 1999.

Following a two year wait, Montgomerie posted a final round 65 to claim his 31st title at the 2007 Smurfit European Open, beating Nicolas Fasth by a stroke.

After turning 50, Montgomerie joined the senior ranks and has since gone on to win three Senior Major Championships and six further Staysure Tour tirles..

Colin Montomerie with the Senior Open Trophy

Sir Nick Faldo: 30

With six Major championships and 24 further DP World Tour wins, Faldo remains one of the most decorated players in the Tour's history.

He earned immediate success when he joined the circuit, making a birdie at the first play-off hole to win his maiden Tour title during his rookie year at the 1977 Skol Lager Individual.

His next three titles came at the expense of Ken Brown, defeating him to win the DP World Tour's PGA Championship on three separate occasions in 1978, 1980 and 1981.

Faldo won eight more times on Tour before claiming the first of six Major titles at The 1987 Open Championship at Muirfield. He would then win the Open twice more in 1990 and 1992, in addition to the Masters in 1989, 1990 and 1996.

The 1996 Masters Tournament marked his sixth Major title, and final win on the DP World Tour. He famously started the final round six strokes behind Greg Norman and went on to win by five as the Australian struggled around Augusta National on the final day.

Faldo won two further titles after that: The PGA Tour’s 1997 Nissan Open, and the 1998 World Cup of Golf with David Carter. He retired from professional golf at the 2015 Open Championship at St Andrews and now leads a successful career as an analyst on American television.

The World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play starts on Wednesday at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas. The event offers a unique format for the PGA Tour, allowing players to go head-to-head for once on the schedule.

The first three WGCs started in 1999 and there have been 83 in all. There are currently four WGC events each season, although the WGC-HSBC Champions in China was postponed in 2021 for a second year in a row due to COVID.

One player has dominated the WGCs over the years, having won three times as many titles as the golfer in second place.

Here’s a closer look.

11 golfers have won 2 WGCs

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas became the 11th PGA Tour golfer to put a second WGC on his resume when he claimed the 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last August. He joins Darren Clarke, Jason Day, Ernie Els, Hunter Mahan, Hideki Matsuyama, Ian Poulter, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson with two WGCs.

Rory McIlroy became the third golfer to win a third WGC when he claimed the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions in China. That event will be postponed for a second straight year in 2021. It achieved WGC status in 2009.

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson is the first and only golfer to win each of the four individual WGC events. He won his first in 2013 and in 2017 he won two of them. His most recent came in 2019 in Mexico.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods clearly has dominated the WGCs. He won at least one of them every year from 1999 to 2009. He won his two most recent in 2013. He’s won two WGC events in the same calendar year six times. He won the WGC-Bridgestone three years in a row two different times. According to the PGA Tour , he’s earned $25.5 million in World Golf Championships events, a figure that would rank 59th on the Tour’s career money list.

Ever since the discovery of whale songs almost 60 years ago, scientists have been trying to decipher the lyrics.

But sperm whales don’t produce the eerie melodies sung by humpback whales, sounds that became a sensation in the 1960s. Instead, sperm whales rattle off clicks that sound like a cross between Morse code and a creaking door. Carl Zimmer, a science reporter, explains why it’s possible that the whales are communicating in a complex language.

2024 PGA Championship predictions, picks, favorites: One of these nine golfers will win at Valhalla

Among the best players in the world, who should you back in the second major championship of the year.

finalpga-one-of-these-hm.png

LOUISVILLE -- Every year, it seems, the PGA Championship trope is as follows: There are only four or five (or maybe six) golfers who can win the second major of the year. That is not always true, of course, but it has  felt true of late, and it perhaps feels the most true this year at Valhalla where the course is sprawling, wet and requiring as much length off the tee as any major in recent memory.

It seems like, as Joseph LaMagna and Garrett Morrison opined on the Fried Egg podcast this week , Valhalla as a golf course will deliver "an extreme version of a major championship" that demands a locked-in driver. Perhaps it will create, as Justin Thomas said Tuesday, a bunched up leaderboard come the weekend. Perhaps it will not.

With that in mind, here is the group of nine players that can win this tournament. (If you want a more expanded look, you can take a look at the top 24 players in the PGA Championship field .) The eventual PGA champion has been singled out in this exercise over the last few years, and there's no reason to think it will be any different in the 106th playing of this tournament.

Don't miss a second of action this week with our PGA Championship TV schedule and live coverage guide along with the full slate of Round 1 tee times and pairings .
