17 best cruise ship bars

Fran Golden

The best bars on cruise ships are more than just places to drink. They're destinations with atmosphere and attitude — plus creative approaches to sipping.

You might have your drink prepared by a robot or by a human in a chamber kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit, or in a bar that levitates while you "travel" through hyperspace.

Whether you're a fan of the perfect martini or craft beer, or you're looking for mixologists who concoct molecular cocktails that sizzle or smoke, check out these cruise ship bar favorites.

Half Moon Bar

cruise bar

The most noteworthy of Holland America 's bars is the Half Moon Bar, which is new to the fleet and only found on Rotterdam . It offers a menu that's one part history, one part science.

This venue's highlights include seven exclusive mixed drinks, each with a backstory and ties to the cruise line's deep-rooted history. A favorite — for its photo-worthiness as much as its taste — is the Rotterdam VII (named after the only ship on which it's found), which features smoked gin and maraschino. Beer and wine are also available.

The bar has taken up residence where you'd find wine-mixing bar Blend on other Pinnacle Class ships, and, due to its small size and understandable popularity, it's often so crowded you have to wait for a seat.

Alchemy Bar

A popular fixture on most Carnival Cruise Line ships, this bar is themed on a pharmacy — complete with apothecary jars — and helmed by specially trained bartenders wearing lab coats who are ready to cure what ails you. You order on a prescription pad, and while there is a fun menu with categories such as Energizing Elixirs and Passion Portions, it's also a treat to just check off some of your favorite flavors and see what the bartenders "prescribe" for you. If all else fails, try the Cucumber Sunrise, an Alchemy Bar staple.

Sugarcane Mojito Bar

cruise bar

On Norwegian Cruise Line 's Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus Class ships , check out this Havana-themed venue with indoor and outdoor seating and live Latin-Cuban music. Watch the sun go down from the alfresco promenade while sipping unusual mojitos such as Spicy Passion, Pineapple Coconut and Raspberry Guava. If you can't decide, go with a flight combining sweet and savory selections.

Blue Eye Lounge

You might not expect one of the coolest bar choices at sea to be on a small ship, but that's the case on French line Ponant 's Explorer Class 184-passenger Le Laperouse and its four sister ships. The multisensory lounge is below the water line and has two huge, whale-eye-shaped portals for watching the sea. The dark space makes you feel like you are inside a whale, except it's decorated with swanky "body listening" couches that gently vibrate to undersea acoustics. It's eerie, fancy and fabulous. Order a martini, and pretend you're James Bond.

Schooner Bar

cruise bar

The Schooner Bar is Royal Caribbean 's signature watering hole, featuring a classic nautical vibe. It's the place to hear live piano music and compete in daily trivia. The bar is so popular that you might have trouble finding a free table. A recently revamped cocktail menu has solidified its position as a top Royal Caribbean drinking spot; we recommend the Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned.

Ooh La La and Pink

The Champagne Bars on two of Disney Cruise Line 's ships have their own themes, but they're equally intriguing. Ooh La La, found on Disney Fantasy, is set up like a French boudoir with delightfully lavish decor — think lots of gold, velvet and ornate furniture — with dim lighting that makes you feel almost naughty for stepping inside. Pink, on Disney Dream, carries a bubble theme as an ode to the drink on which it's based. Keep an eye out for pink elephants that dance around the walls every so often.

One of the best cocktails to try at either location is the Icy Pop — a fruity, refreshing ice pop served in a large glass of Champagne.

cruise bar

When it debuted on Celebrity Cruises ' Celebrity Edge in 2018, Eden — a restaurant, bar, deli and performance space all rolled into one venue — had cruisers scratching their heads. A strange, trippy three-hour show that featured acrobats who came a little too close to the audience was complemented by a list of equally curious drinks from the nearby Eden bar.

As notable for their unique ingredients as they are for their eye-wateringly high prices, the drinks — now available on two different menus across the line's Edge Class vessels — are masterfully concocted, featuring some of the most jaw-dropping presentations we've ever seen. Think treasure boxes, smoke and glasses in the shape of apples. It's not just hype, though; every drink on the menu is fantastic.

Royal Caribbean's wine bar, Vintages, is generally one of the line's least crowded bars, which appeals to anyone looking for a quiet drink before dinner. Tastings happen there throughout each sailing, and an extensive wine list makes it easy to find something you'll enjoy during other times of the day. Even if you're not a wino, Vintages — often found in Central Park on ships that have neighborhoods — also serves tapas that are worth trying if you're feeling peckish. Plus, the laid-back but classy setting makes it the perfect place to sip and socialize.

cruise bar

Sip, the Champagne bar on Virgin Voyages ' ships, is one of the most popular bars on board . Because you have to pass through it to reach the theater, you can't miss it.

Elegantly appointed with creams, tans and jewel tones, it's set up with a bar on one side of the walkway that runs through it and plush, comfortable alcove seating on the other, near windows that provide sea views. It's the place to go to snag a glass of bubbly while you take in live music at night or to enjoy afternoon tea during the day.

Guy's Pig & Anchor Brewhouse

Guy's Pig & Anchor Brewhouse is the place to sip Carnival's exclusive Parched Pig craft brews made by a brewmaster on each ship. There's a smoked porter, farmhouse ale and hoppy IPA, among other selections. If you're indecisive, go with a flight.

The bar is found on Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama, Mardi Gras , Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee. The outlets on those ships also offer brewery tours and the opportunity to dive into hickory-smoked barbecue selections from Food Network star Guy Fieri. The RedFrog Pub and Brewery on Carnival Vista has the beers, too, but with pub grub.

Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge

cruise bar

Live out your Star Wars fantasies in the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge on the new 4,000-passenger Disney Wish . The door to this cozy bar whooshes as you enter the space, styled like a luxury space yacht ready to jump between galaxies. (It does so thanks to projections of outer space on "virtual" windows and a top-rate, rumbling sound system.) Order up Coruscant The Chancellor, a cognac cocktail "enjoyed by the senate elite members."

Golden Lion Pub

On Cunard ships, including ocean liner Queen Mary 2, the Golden Lion replicates a real British pub, from the dark wood, leather banquettes and stools to the darts tournaments and pub quizzes. Sample a wide selection of beers and ales, including three craft beers from award-winning U.K. microbrewery Dark Revolution. Or go with a traditional Pimm's Cup (made with a gin-based liquor, fresh fruit and ginger ale). The pub grub menu features fish 'n' chips and bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes).

cruise bar

Located in the main lounge on 228-passenger Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours ' Scenic Eclipse , this bar boasts more than 110 bottles of whisky on the wall, all in a floor-to-ceiling showcase backlit for dramatic effect. Among the golden-brown liquids, you'll find single malts such as a 25-year-old Glendullan, a 30-year-old Jura The Loch and a 16-year-old Lagavulin. Big-name super-premium blends are well represented in a collection that gathers bottles from around the world, including Australia, Japan, France, India, Taiwan, South Africa, the United States, Scotland, Ireland and Sweden. Drinks are included in the cruise fares.

Fortune Teller

Exclusively on Carnival Cruise Line's 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras, the Fortune Teller stands out for its cool New Orleans vibe. It's located in the big ship's French Quarter (where Chef Emeril Lagasse also has his first seagoing bistro) and features creative drinks, Victorian decor and a voodoo allure. Drinks change color, smoke or otherwise impress. The Crystal Ball comes topped with a hazy orb where you might or might not see your future after drinking the concoction of Herradura Silver Tequila, Green Chartreuse, agave nectar and lime.

Martini Bar & Crush

cruise bar

On most Celebrity Cruises ships, the popular Martini Bars are classy, tucked-away spaces featuring a collection of rare vodkas (and the option of caviar, too) served from an ice-topped bar. The bartenders do more than just pour the drinks; they entertain like Tom Cruise in the movie "Cocktail," flipping and juggling shakers and pouring multiple drinks at once from a stack of them.

On Edge Class ships, the action moves to the Grand Plaza under a breathtaking, color-changing three-deck light fixture. Go with a dirty martini or a Candied Apple (Gray Goose, apple schnapps, pomegranate juice and butterscotch schnapps).

Good Spirits At Sea

Every cocktail at this Princess Cruises bar comes with a story, created in partnership with the TV series Good Spirits. Drinks are made from liquor and other ingredients gathered from around the world, including farm-fresh, local ingredients from cruising destinations. A mixologist does the preparation while giving detailed explanations. Get up-close views of the drink-making on a video screen behind the bar, found on select ships. Sample a Grappa Peach while learning about its origins in Uruguay, or try a Bangkok Mule made with whiskey, ginger and lemongrass.

Founders Bar

cruise bar

If you like your cocktails crafty, the Founders Bar on Oceania 's new Vista will keep you coming back for more. You don't bother with wine or beer there; it's not worth the wait to order anything not on the menu of creative concoctions. Try drinks pumped full of smoke in a box, spritzed with flavor from perfume-style bottles, topped with bubbles from a Flavor Blaster Gun or centered on a frozen fruity ice cube. Don't forget your phone because every beverage is as picturesque as it is delicious.

Gimmicky bars worth a mention

Some cruise ship bars emphasize interesting concepts over quality drinks or, conversely, pour flashy beverages in dull spaces with absolutely no atmosphere. If you're looking for bragging rights or to try something new, check out these entertaining bars that are a one-and-done experience.

Magic Carpet Bar

Each of Celebrity's Edge Class vessels is equipped with a giant orange apparatus on its starboard side. Known as the Magic Carpet, it can move up and down the side of the ship, where it serves various functions (including a tender platform), depending on the deck on which it stops.

When it's positioned on Deck 14, near the pool, or Deck 5, when it turns into an open-air dining venue, the Magic Carpet is a great place for passengers to grab a drink. Although the beverages aren't anything particularly notable, the atmosphere is spectacular, offering drool-worthy views, comfortable seating and an ocean breeze, sometimes with live music to boot.

Rising Tide Bar

cruise bar

On Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships , this popular bar moves smoothly up and down three decks on a slow, 20-minute ride. There are seats for 32 imbibers who sip as they travel between the bustling Royal Promenade and tree-lined Central Park. The popular drink: A Kir Royale (creme de cassis and Champagne). You must be at least 21 to take a ride in this elevator. It's fun to try, but it's not a place people tend to return to again and again.

SKYY Vodka Ice Bar

Who doesn't want to put on a parka in the Caribbean? On select Norwegian Cruise Line ships, you'll want to bundle up for this icy bar, located in a chamber always kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit and decorated with ice sculptures and cool color lights. You sit on ice blocks while bartenders serve average vodka drinks on ice and in ice glasses.

cruise bar

Royal Caribbean's Quantum Class ships, as well as the Oasis Class' Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, take drink-making out of the hands of human bartenders and put it into the hands — or, rather, robotic arms — of machines. The robots, with names such as Rock'Em and Sock'Em, can't make every drink in the book, but they can shake up a signature Bionic Tea (think: Long Island Iced Tea), sliding it to you across a bar top. Order your selections by communicating via a smartpad. George Jetson would be impressed.

Although the robots are fun to watch, the messy and impersonal experience does not make you want to hang out for hours at this futuristic watering hole.

Metropolitan Bar

On Norwegian Cruise Line's new Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , this sustainability-focused bar specializes in handcrafted zero-waste cocktails. The idea is to combine surplus ingredients with sustainable spirits in creative ways. The signature Primadonna, a take on an Old-Fashioned, is made with surplus banana peels and Flor De Cana rum, which is produced with 100% renewable energy. There's also a line of responsibly sourced botanical gins and 20 biodynamic wines produced via organic farming methods. While we love the concept, the ambience is lacking, which is likely why the Metropolitan Bar was frequently uncrowded.

Carnival Cruise Drink Menus, Bar Prices & More

For many passengers, it’s not a cruise unless they have a drink in their hand. And with Carnival known as the “Fun Ships,” you better believe there are plenty of spots where you can grab an adult beverage and let loose.

RedFrog bar on Carnival cruise

In fact, you have an amazing amount of options, not just in spots where you can find something to drink but also in what’s available onboard. From wine to beer to cocktails and more, no matter what you’re craving there will be a spot on the ship where you can find it.

Even so, if you’ve never sailed Carnival, you might have questions about things such as bars available, prices, and even drink menus. Having sailed the cruise line plenty, we can tell you firsthand about the policies and questions that you might have.

Bars Available on a Carnival Cruise

On your ship, there will likely be a dozen or more spots to grab a drink. Many of these bars change across different ships, but there are a few spots that make their way across the fleet and Carnival fans love them. Here are some of the noteworthy spots you’ll likely see, no matter which ship you sail:

Alchemy Bar on Carnival Cruise

Alchemy Bar — Are you looking for a spot where the drinks are more experimental than a typical bar? Alchemy Bar offers the spot, with an old-time pharmacy vibe where the bartenders create “elixirs” using high-end spirits, spices, juices, and maybe even a few things you wouldn’t normally think to include in a beverage.

Havana Bar — As you might guess, Havana Bar keeps with a Cuban theme. If you want a mojito (or a cup of Cuban coffee), this is the place. During the night there is usually live music and dancing, along with a number of spots to sit and have a cozy, intimate chat with someone you love.

RedFrog — Passengers might get a little confused as some ships have a RedFrog Tiki Bar and others have a RedFrog Pub. Nevermind the small difference in name, they have a similar vibe as a fun tropical-themed bar serving beers, rum drinks, and anything else under the sun. If you want a place with an upbeat vibe and a drink with an umbrella in it, make sure to stop by.

SkyBox Sports Bar — Unfortunately if you want to watch the game, it’s normally not available in your cabin. The good news is that TV around the ship (including spots like the casino) have different feeds so if there is a big match or game, you can usually find it. A perfect place to check is the SkyBox Sports Bar. It features plenty of spots to watch the game, multiple TVs and a familiar sports bar vibe.

Beer Station — This isn’t really a bar, but ships across the fleet will have beer stations. This is a self-serve beer spot with a couple of choices. Scan your card, pull the tap, and you’re charged by the ounce that you pour. Options of beer are limited, but it’s also usually the least expensive glass of beer on the ship.

Carnival Cruise Bar Menus

Each bar will offer up a menu that’s unique . So you’ll find drinks served at the RedFrog Tiki Bar that aren’t served at the Havana Bar. And you’ll find drinks at the Havana Bar that aren’t on the menu at the Alchemy Bar.

In general, we suggest using this as a chance to try something new. But just know that if there is something you really want to drink and don’t see it on a menu, don’t hesitate to ask. If it’s something that’s well known, chances are you can have it made for you, no problem.

Here are a few menus from around the ship:

cruise bar

How Much Are Drinks on Carnival?

Menu prices will vary from bar to bar and drink to drink. However, there in general you’ll find that prices are in the following ranges before gratuity:

  • Beers: $7-8
  • Cocktails: $10-12
  • Wine: Varies

Carnival is well-known for offering discounts and deals. For instance, there are offers for buckets of beer that are a discount versus buying individually. Some bars might have happy hour specials. Others may have a special drink of the day that is a deal.

In general, however, you can expect to see these types of menu prices. Don’t forget to add in the 18% gratuity on top of the price.

Understanding Gratuity on Drink Purchases

Like other cruise lines, Carnival has an automatic gratuity on bar purchases. This charge — 18% — is tacked on to any bar purchase.

So if you order a drink with a $10 menu price, you’ll actually pay $11.80 in total. You can’t adjust or remove this gratuity. If you have Carnival’s CHEERS! drink package , then the 18% gratuity is added onto the daily cost of the package instead (and you’re charged nothing at the bar).

In addition, when you get your receipt you’ll also see a line for an additional tip. This isn’t required, but is optional if you are feeling generous.

Bringing Alcohol on a Carnival Cruise

After seeing the prices and gratuities, you might be wondering about just bringing your own drinks from home. While Carnival does let you bring on a small quantity of non-alcoholic drinks (12 cans/cartons per person), beverages like beer and liquor aren’t allowed.

You can, however, bring on a regular-sized bottle of wine or champagne per person with you when you board . So if you have a favorite wine brand or just want to save a little money, this is a smart rule to take advantage of.

Your favorite beer or spirit needs to stay home.

Can I Take My Drink Anywhere on the Ship?

Yes. One policy that can take some getting used to is that you are free to take your drink anywhere on the ship. So if you head to a bar, you can then take the beverage with you to the pool, the dining room, your cabin, or the theater.

There are no “open container” rules like you see on land. The entire ship is open for you to enjoy with a beverage.

Bar Opening Times and Hours of Operation

cruise bar

A Carnival cruise is definitely a “no judgment zone” when it comes to having a drink or two. All you need to do is look at the bar hours of operations.

It’s not that you can get a drink any time of day, but just about. The hours will vary from bar to bar, but with so many on board, there’s often at least one open around the ship outside of the early morning hours.

Some spots open as early as 7-8 a.m. while some have closing times of midnight and others simply say they are open until “Late.” You can check the hours of operation on the Carnival app once on the ship.

CHEERS! Beverage Package

If you’re planning to enjoy a drink or ten on a cruise, then you might be wondering about Carnival’s beverage package — also known as CHEERS! For this package, you pay one set daily fee (the price varies depending when you buy and your trip length) and then you get to order pretty much anything off the menu, as long as it’s under $20 per glass.

These drink packages can make things incredibly convenient. When you’re thirsty, you simply head to the bar and don’t have to worry about a bar tab.

In general the Carnival drink package is one of the better offers compared to most cruise lines, but there are definitely things to know in the fine print. We cover everything about the CHEERS! beverage package in our article here .

Drinking Age on Carnival

If you are on a Carnival cruise from most places, then you have to be 21 years old to drink on the ship. However, when you are in a port of call, you’re subject to that country’s rules. So on the ship, you have to be 21 years old, but stop in Cozumel and you can drink in port at 18 years old.

Note that if you sail Carnival from Australia, then the drinking age is lowered to 18 years old on the ship.

19 Most Unique Cruise Ship Bars in 2023

Picture of Sarah Bretz, Contributor

Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • July 13, 2022

Finding stunning bars and meeting passengers are exciting for many cruisers, and even more so if you’re on a particular ship with well-thought-out themes, from interior design to cocktails. I love fun-filled bars, which led me to create this list of the best and most unique cruise ship bars and lounges in the entire world.

1. Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge

Ship: Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line ‘s Disney Wish is barely out of the gate, and we’re already hyped about the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge on board. We’ve been psyched for it since Disney first revealed its details last spring!

Styled as a luxurious spaceship, this themed bar offers signature beverages inspired by Star Wars movies and interactive tastings. Virtual “windows” offer glimpses into the vast galaxy, where you’ll see famous spaceships flying by and locales like Batuu and Tatooine. As far as watering holes at sea go, this has to be one of the most unique ones thus far!

Check out the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge menu here.

2. Alchemy Bar

Ships: All Carnival Cruise Line vessels except Carnival Paradise

If you’re a Carnival Cruise Line cruiser who likes a cocktail, you’ll surely like Alchemy Bar fan club.

This vintage pharmacy-themed bar features a menu divided into sections, including “Energizing Elixirs,” “Relief For What Ails,” and “Passion Potions.”

Cocktails are refreshing, made with fresh herbs and other ingredients. Tell the mixologist what you’d like if you’re not in the mood for anything on the menu, and they’ll make you custom concoction.

Check out the Alchemy Bar menu here.

3. Sunset Bar

Ship: Celebrity Beyond

Technically, many Celebrity ships have a Sunset Bar, but none are as spectacular and large as the one on the line’s brand-new Edge-class vessel Celebrity Beyond.

For the first time, the ship features a two-story Sunset Bar, and it’s almost twice the size of the same bar area on other ships. Created by designer Nate Berkus and architect Tom Wright, the globally-influenced, upscale space features conversation alcoves, a pergola-covered entrance, and plush daybeds. It also seamlessly connects to the alfresco dining area of the Oceanview Café buffet below.

4. Blue Eye Lounge

Ships: Ponant’s Le Laperouse, Le Champlain, Le Bougainville, and Le Dumont-d’Urville

Step into Ponant’s Blue Eye Lounge, and you’re instantly transported into an entirely new world under the sea — the whale’s eye-inspired space is below the water line.

The multi-sensory lounge features two portholes made of a whopping 18 layers of glass, where you can view the ocean’s flora and fauna. If you don’t see much out the windows, there are cameras installed on the bow and aft, with images projected in this lounge — offering more opportunities to see dolphins racing the ship. Hydrophones are installed on the ship’s underwater exterior, with the receiving end of the audio in the Blue Eye.

The lounge also includes what Ponant calls “Body Listening Sofas” — which vibrate in unison with the streaming aquatic acoustics.

The only drinks served in the Blue Eye Lounge can be poured or made quietly so as not to disturb the serene atmosphere. This means no loud bar equipment — such as blenders or shakers — is allowed.

To get a detailed look at Blue Eye Lounge, check out this video from Harr Travel on YouTube:

5. Sugarcane Mojito Bar

Ships: Norwegian Bliss, Dawn, Encore, Escape, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Jewel, Joy, Pearl, and Star

If you want to try all the mojitos, Norwegian Cruise Line ‘s Sugarcane Mojito Bar is the place to be. The Havana-themed venue features live Latin-Cuban music at various times and serves up unique mojitos like the Raspberry Guava Mojito, the Jalapeño Cucumber Mojito, and the Spicy Passion Mojito. If you can’t decide, the bar offers a mojito flight with six drinks.

6. Bionic Bar

Ships: Anthem, Quantum, Ovation, Spectrum, Odyssey, Harmony, Symphony, and Wonder of the Seas

The Bionic Bar has become a staple on some of Royal Caribbean ’s Quantum and Oasis-class ships. Here, you may order your beverage on one of many digital tablets around the bar, and watch the robotic arm selecting bottles and pouring concoctions.

This isn’t usually a bar that many people become regulars at — given the lack of a human bartender, which often keeps people returning to the same place — but it’s a must-visit at least once or twice during a sailing.

7. RedFrog Pub & Brewery

Ship: Carnival Vista

Carnival Cruise Line has a few versions of its RedFrog outposts. The most popular are the poolside RedFrog Rum Bar and the indoor/outdoor RedFrog Pub, which can be found on most ships in the fleet.

Mardi Gras has a two-story RedFrog Tiki Bar by the Lido pool, and Carnival Vista has an amped-up version of the RedFrog Pub called RedFrog Pub & Brewery. This indoor/outdoor venue features a full bar, plenty of table space, live music, table games, and the first-ever brewery on a United States-based cruise ship.

That’s right! You can sip a beer right on board.

8. Half Moon Bar

Ship: Holland America’s Rotterdam

Rotterdam ’s Half Moon Bar is a venue brimming with history, offering a unique look at Holland America Line throughout the years through the lens of a cocktail — each served with a tale of its inspiration as described in the bar menu.

Drinks on the menu include “The Original,” which celebrates the line’s first ship Rotterdam I; “Three Mile Run,” a prohibition cocktail that tells the story of HAL’s Prohibition-era cruises to nowhere; and “May She Be Blessed,” an ode to the godmothers who bless each new Holland America ship when she debuts.

These ships in MSC have two Venchi outposts: one at the aft offering gelato and the indoor with prominent location offering chocolates, coffees, cocktails, and other delicious treats.

Inside, I tried a delicious coffee drink called the Marocchino and the chocolate martini, which was incredible. If you’re in the mood for a rich, hot chocolate coffee drink or a chocolate cocktail, do not miss spending some time at Venchi.

Ships: Celebrity Edge, Apex, and Beyond

Step into the lush, light-filled Eden Bar on Celebrity Cruises ’ Edge-class ships. The three-story area includes a café, specialty restaurant, plenty of seating, evening entertainment, and a bar.

The Eden Bar is located on the middle deck of Eden and features a unique menu of cocktails made with fresh ingredients, including herbs in “Library of Plants.” Drinks are made with unique ingredients, with names like “Village,” “Garden,” “Fig,” “Shaman,” and “Pea.”

11. Hook’s Barbery

This barbershop in Disney Cruise Line ‘s Disney Wise wouldn’t look anything extraordinary. But explore further, and you’ll see that the barbershop, themed after Captain Hook and his ship Jolly Roger from Peter Pan, has its own bar. There, guests can enjoy whiskey tastings and custom Old Fashioneds while being pampered at the same time.

You can still go there if you want to have bar experience without getting a barbershop service.

12. Viking Crown Lounge

Ships: Almost every Royal Caribbean International vessel built prior to 2014 has a Viking Crown Lounge, but the location may vary

A staple of Royal Caribbean ships for decades, the Viking Crown Lounge is a striking architectural feature, which is a favorite spot for many Royal Caribbean cruisers.

The “in the round” bar and lounge sits atop the ship, given the lido deck (on most ships), offering panoramic views of the scenery surrounding the ship.

It’s a great spot to watch the world go by during daytime while chatting with friends and family. At night, Viking Crown Lounge lights up with live music, strobe lights, and dancing.

13. District Brew House

Ships: Norwegian Escape, Bliss, Joy, and Encore

Norwegian Cruise Line touts District Brew House as the first “craft beer hall” at sea. Between bottles and beers on tap, there are over 70 different brews to choose from.

What I love most about this venue as a non-beer drinker is its ambiance and location. I’ve personally been to District Brew House on Norwegian Joy and Encore, and I loved sitting on a couch right by the window.

Instead of looking down onto a promenade deck or lifeboat, you’ll experience the unobstructed view of the ocean from the windows at District Brew House. It’s nice to look down and see the ship slicing through the water from a seat at nighttime.

If you have a friend with you, don’t miss a chance to go to District Brew House with them. The menu also includes cocktails on tap, spirits, and ciders; and the atmosphere is well worth it.

14. Rising Tide Bar

Ships: Oasis, Allure, Harmony, Symphony, and Wonder of the Seas

Rising Tide Bar is an elevator bar. This mobile bar moves up and down between the Royal Promenade and Central Park neighborhoods on Royal Caribbean ’s mega Oasis-class ships. So hop onto the Rising Tide Bar to enjoy a beer, wine, spirit, or cocktail and people-watch on multiple ship decks.

15. Red Bar

Ships: Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet and Valiant Lady

Adjacent to the red, black, and white Razzle Dazzle Restaurant is the aptly named Red Bar in Virgin Voyages ‘ Scarlet and Valiant Lady.

Here, you’ll see features wacky and weird cocktails like goldfish (served in a goldfish-shaped glass), popcorn old-fashioned (served in a container that looks like a popcorn carton), donut tell me, and gym bunny.

Fresh-pressed juices, tonics, beers, champagnes, and wines can also be found at Red Bar.

Scarlet Lady's Red Bar Restaurant

16. Bamboo Room

Ship: Mariner and Navigator of the Seas

Royal Caribbean calls this Polynesian-themed watering hole a “tiki-chic lounge.” The exotic, colorful hideaway encourages guests to sit and escape for a while, with cocktails made with exotic fruits and spices like the double-rum soaked Banana Colada, Island Old Fashioned, Bamboo Swizzle, and Royal Zombie.

Small plates like Asian noodle salad, Hawaiian BBQ pulled pork sliders, and coconut crab bruschetta are also available.

Given my love for tiki bars, this is a spot I’d love to see Royal expand onto more ships in the fleet.

17. The Bayou

One of the prettiest, lush bars on Disney Cruise Line ‘s Disney Wish is The Bayou, inspired by the film The Princess and the Frog.

By day, the spacious lounge hosts various activities and serves fresh juices, specialty coffees, and cold brew cocktails. By night, the venue is reserved for adults only, and features live jazz music, serving beer and wine and concoctions such as the New Orleans classic Hurricane, an Absinthe Frappe, and an Orleans Crusta.

Guests can also enjoy warm beignets at The Bayou. The upscale spot is the perfect after-dinner place to settle in with good music, drinks, and company.

18. Wonderland Bar

Ships: Quantum, Anthem, Ovation, Harmony, Symphony, and Wonder of the Seas

The Alice in Wonderland-inspired specialty restaurant Wonderland is loved by many Royal Caribbean cruisers. The venue features quirky interior design elements and even stranger food — most of which, at first glance, are unidentifiable. It’s a restaurant where you check your serious side at the door and enter a whimsy and surprise world.

To give you an idea of what’s in store, one of the venue’s mixologists said: “We all drink like we all eat: with our eyes first.” Cocktails are magical and fanciful, with names such as Dream Catcher, Helios in the Sand, The Stowaway, and Wondering Ice. At Wonderland, there’s only one thing to expect: the unexpected.

19. The Golden Jubilee

Ship: Carnival Celebration

Carnival Cruise Line ‘s The Golden Jubilee will be another bar steeped in its cruise line’s history.

Last year, Carnival announced that this brand-new bar would be filled with artwork, memorabilia, and original pieces from the line’s earlier vessels.

Examples include an original glass and mahogany partition wall from TSS Mardi Gras , brass and glass nightclub doors from TSS Carnivale (which will frame one of the lounge’s entrances), and an original bronze statue of Carnival Founder Ted Arison and Finnish shipbuilder Martin Saarikangas, given as a gift from the Kvaerner Masa-Yards to Carnival when Carnival Sensation was delivered in 1993.

The space will also have plenty of seating, live music, and a dance floor. It will offer the most popular cocktails through the decades since 1972 Carnival was founded.

This hidden bar on a cruise ship comes complete with its own ghost

This hidden bar on a cruise ship is not what we expected Sun Princess

Cruise lines are really pulling some tricks out of their hat with their offerings, as they attempt to entice younger and more diverse audiences onto their ships.

From ice grottos to ultimate booze cruises , other-worldly expeditions and *checks notes * robot bartenders , we’ve come a long way from hopping on board to spend a week simply sipping pina coladas on the lido deck (but, hey, we also won’t turn that down, let’s be honest).

Princess Cruises has recently launched a pretty impressive hidden gem on its newest ship the Sun Princess, called Spellbound.

And, as the name suggests, it’s got magic at its core.

Magic shows on a boat? Just about as groundbreaking as florals for spring, right? Been there, abracadabra that, we hear you.

This bar takes things to another level, though – first of all, it’s a hidden bar, tucked behind a nondescript black door on board. You’d be forgiven for walking straight past it on the way to the buffet and having no idea of the wonder that sits on the other side.

Vote for your chance to win a cruise

Do you love cruising? Are you an intrepid traveller? Maybe you just like looking at pictures of luxe ships. No matter which, we want you to vote!

Metro has partnered with the  Sailawaze Excellence Awards , highlighting the very best in cruising when it comes to sustainability, wellness, entertainment and beyond.

And we need YOU to simply select what you’ve been most impressed by.

The best bit? By voting before the end of the day (May 10) you’ll automatically be in with a chance of winning a cruise for two worth £2,500.

Say bon voyage to the more traditional categories of ‘best large ship’ or ‘best luxury cruise line’ and instead ahoy to innovation, food and drink and showstopping performances.

Vote for your favourite here now .

It’s also Victorian-themed, to give it that real added zest, with mind-bending entertainment performed by magicians as they (the travellers, not the magicians) sip on theatrical cocktails served with sleight of hand.

Spellbound has been created in conjunction with the reknown Magic Castle, a private club in Hollywood for magicians and enthusiasts, which specialises in teaching and performing magic. It’s this crop of spellbinding men and women who will be performing on the cruise line’s latest ship, too.

With its ornate décor that includes magical artefacts, vintage curiosities, and interactive special effects, the bar, and its series of themed rooms, is meticulously designed to capture the essence of this exclusive club (which will set you back $149 (£118) to enter for an evening).

This hidden bar on a cruise ship is not what we expected Sun Princess

For instance, in the Music Room, guests will meet the spirit of Isabella (of course) who will share her stories of sailing on Sun Princess. The venue will also feature a vintage Parlor Bar featuring Artemis the owl who is revealed through interaction with skilled illusionists before entering the intimate 30-seat, Spellbound theatre, to experience close-up magic that will blow guests’ minds.

So, knowing all this, it perhaps comes as no surprise Princess Cruise is up for a gong in Sailawaze’s Excellence Awards in the entertainment category.

But, it’s got some strong competition.

It’s up against Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Norwegian Prima, which features the world’s first venue that transforms from a three-story theatre into a Vegas-style nightclub, the world’s first freefall dry slide and a three-level racetrack at sea. Add the legendary GLOW party with DJs on decks, fantastic dance music and glow sticks, and the Norwegian Aqua, due 2025, which will boast Aqua Slidecoaster, the first rollercoaster and waterslide hybrid.

Then there’s P&O’s Mission Control – the cruise line’s first multi-sensory immersive submarine simulation game, exclusive to Arvia. Navigate through danger, mysteries, and puzzles in incredibly realistic 3D ocean environments in one of two one-hour experiences: a family-friendly adventure suitable for all ages and an adult-oriented adventure.

Marella Cruises’ Exchange Speakeasy Bar is an exclusive, hidden-away adult-only venue that’s also nominated. It’s got a unique cocktail menu not found elsewhere on the ship with live music and immersive entertainment in the evenings.

Over to Carnival Cruise Lines, and its new ship Carnival Jubilee, which features Currents, a technology-rich underwater-themed area spanning two decks. Its promenade also transforms into an immersive experience with evening showcases of otherworldly destinations during drinks and dinner, while Soundwaves Jukebox, a music-activated visualiser, brings guest-chosen songs to life through images and light displays. That’s before we even get to the interactive gameshow…

We did a 3 hour Cruisin Tikis Cape Coral cruise yesterday and it was fantastic! Captain Dave was great - informative, cordial, helpful and extremely accommodating. The boat was well appointed and spotless and we couldn't have been any happier with our cruise. We highly recommend and will definitely schedule another cruise.

We celebrated my daughter's birthday with a sunset cruise. Captain Nick was so kind and added to the great experience. Such a fun night! We will be back!

cruise bar

We had our group of 6 which was a dedicated boat for the sunset cruise. It was a bit hectic to sort out that we could (and needed to) bring our own drinks. So we bulk mixed a few containers, packed our own drinking ice and headed over. It was awesome to enjoy good eats at the Mexican restaurant attached to the dock launch spots. Capt Denise was incredible and brought us to a remarkable spot to enjoy our drinks, talk about life and take a lovely cruise on the canals. Highly recommend as this is a great price for 6 of us and a two hour boat cruise.

We had a group of 6 couples. The ladies went with Capt Nick, the guys went with Capt Bobby. All were so very pleased with everything. I mean everything. Nick was so very accommodating when planning our trip. He adjusted on the fly as we went along. We brought drinks and snacks on board, stopped to bar hop a little. Was an awesome time. So relaxing. We did the one out of Fort Myers Beach. Will plan doing the Cape Coral one n Loved the slogan "Why bar hop when you can hop on a bar". Highly recommend.

cruise bar

A group of Bar Harbor businesses is asking a federal court to suspend the town’s limit on cruise ship passengers until a legal dispute is resolved.

The Association to Preserve and Protect Local Livelihoods first sued the town over the 1,000 person daily cap in federal court. A U.S. District judge sided largely with the town, but opponents said the decision means the ordinance is not enforceable as written.

Eben Salvatore, a member of the association, said the limits have already had a detrimental effect on the 2025 cruise season, with a significant decline in ships planning to come to Bar Harbor.

“Those are all really, really bad things for businesses, for taxpayers, for their families, for employees, etc,” he said.

Salvatore said the only way to amend the language of the ordinance is through a town referendum, and his group is asking for a ruling from the circuit court to suspend enforcement.

Resident Charles Sidman, one of the authors of the ordinance, said he will vigorously oppose the challenge, and that the majority of residents still support the ordinance.

“We’re not backing down an inch,” he said. “I think we’re proceeding satisfactorily and we’re making some changes that are necessary.”

The association argues an earlier court decision, which largely sided with the town, means the ordinance is not enforceable as written, and can only be amended through a referendum.

Sidman, meanwhile, has filed suit against the town, alleging it has failed to follow the enforcement processes laid out in the ordinance.

Town Council Chair Valerie Peacock did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

8 people were killed in a shooting attack at a bar in Ecuador, local police say

Police say eight people have been killed in a shooting attack on a birthday party in a bar in Ecuador, which has suffered an escalating wave of gang-fueled violence

QUITO, Ecuador -- A shooting attack during a birthday party at a bar in Ecuador on Saturday left eight people dead, police said, as the country experiences an escalating wave of gang-fueled violence.

It was unclear if the attack in the coastal province of Santa Elena was directed at the person whose was holding the celebration.

Local police said the attackers rode up in a taxi and two motorcycles. They opened fire at the bar in the town of Chanduy, 185 miles (300 kilometers) southwest of Quito. Some of the victims were found outside the bar.

The victims included five men and three women and none of the victims had criminal records, police said. Santa Elena has become one of Ecuador’s most violent regions, in part because it has three ports. Seaports are often used to smuggle drugs.

Local gangs, which in some cases work with Mexican cartels, have caused homicides to increase significantly in recent years.

Ecuador saw at least 7,600 killings in 2023, up from about 4,400 in 2022. So far this year, there have been about 1,875 homicides in Ecuador.
