Describe a journey that you remember well.

You should say:

Where did you go?
How did you travel?
Why did you go on the journey?

Sample Answer 1

Last year, I had the pleasure of embarking on the most memorable trip of my life. It was a trip from Patiala to Shimla, which is a distance of around 160 miles by automobile. It was my first self-driving travel experience.

My friends called me a week before my 24th birthday to inquire about my plans. We decided to go to Shimla and celebrate my birthday there on the spur of the moment. After completing my driving lessons and acquiring my driver’s license, I advised doing the road trip in our car. So, I requested my father lend me his car.

I was accompanied by four of my closest friends. They were concerned since I had never driven in a steep area before. However, I assured them that the ride would be pleasant. We had no clue about the road conditions while planning the route, and it was made worse by leaving the highway for a time; anyhow, the following 10 kilometers or so were on some of the worst, never-ending roads. As a result, it took us around 4 hours to get to the Shimla hotel we had reserved. Regardless, contrary to my worries, driving on hills was not difficult, and this was the first lesson that gave me the confidence to drive on hills.

Overall, the journey was delightful. We all had a good time on vacation. Fortunately, because it was a holiday, the roads were mostly empty. However, it took a long time to get there since we stopped at numerous places for food and beverages. There was a lot of merriment there, and we weren’t in the mood to leave sooner.

Sample Answer 2

Journeys have always been an enjoyable part of my life. Every trip has taught me something fruitful, and I have become a better person at the end of every trip. Also, by planning and executing random trips, I have enhanced my observation skills to a great extent. The knowledge I have gathered through these trips is tough to accumulate through other means.

So, to tell you about a journey that is still immaculate in my conscious, it is the last travel that I arranged. So, all this while, I wanted to visit secluded and quaint places. However, my previous trip was to Ladakh – one of the dream places of almost every adventure lover.

Initially, I had decided to travel by cab as Ladakh is approximately 800 km from my place. But I changed this decision all because of one video on Instagram. While scrolling through this social media platform, I stumbled upon a video that showcased snow-laden mountains captured from an airplane’s window on the way to Ladakh. The mesmerizing beauty of those mountains compelled me to drop the idea of traveling by cab, and I booked plane tickets.

I am an adventure lover, and Ladakh is one of the prettiest places on the earth. I visited there for its scenic beauty, to try delectable cuisines, relish colorful local festivals, explore gompas and monasteries, and rejuvenate and relax.

Journeys, after all, are always unforgettable. It exposes us to new experiences and allows us to unwind ourselves. I like traveling because it allows me to explore new places and experience new things around the world. However, there are certain travels on which I have had less than good encounters. I would like to discuss one such journey.

I went on a road trip with my friends around three months ago. It was my first extended road trip with my friends, and it was the most unforgettable event of my life. Because my friends and I don’t get to see each other very frequently due to our busy job schedules, we decided to take a long road journey from Punjab to Rajasthan. Ten of our friends decided to come along, so we managed two cars accordingly.

Everyone was requested to arrive at a mutually agreed-upon location on the scheduled day of the voyage. However, due to tremendous traffic congestion that none of us had expected, everyone was an hour late. Thus, our adventure began after considerable hardship. Nevertheless, because of the nature of the trip, it was a joyful and exhilarating experience for me. For a few hours, everything was working well, and everyone was having a great time. We were enjoying our little giggles, and the sight of the road flanked by trees. There was relaxing music playing in the background, and we were enjoying our fullest.

Suddenly, our journey was interrupted by accident. The first car in the lineup came to a complete stop because a youngster was crossing the road in a hurry, and the rest of the cars crashed because they couldn’t control their speed. Everyone was upset and anxious for a few hours. After that, everyone felt sad and worried. After that, the thrill of the trip vanished, and towards the end of the journey, we just hoped to reach our destination safely.

IELTS Speaking Band 9 Sample Answer:

So I’d like to talk about a journey that I took when I was a little kid. Together with my family, I went to the Grand Canyon, which is a popular tourist attraction. It’s a national park in the United States. And I know we traveled by car. Umm, I can’t remember how long the trip was but I’d guess it was about a week. And the reason we went on this trip? Well, it was probably because my parents wanted to take me for a nice trip, a nice family trip.

That’s a common thing to do, um, with some families. But the reason I remember this journey so well is not because the Grand Canyon was amazing. I’m sure it was. But there was something else that happened while I was on this journey. And that was…on the trip…on our way to the Grand Canyon, um, we stopped by a book store. And, you know, I liked reading books a little bit when I was a kid so um, my I think my mom recommended this particular book to me. And I don’t remember what it was right now but we bought the book because she said “Oh this is a good idea. You might want to read this book.”

And so, she gave it to me and in the car, probably for about four hours or five hours, instead of looking out at all of the scenery and at all of these new places we were driving to, I just had my head in my book. I don’t think I looked up at all and I just read the book from cover to cover for like four or five hours…just sitting in the car in the back seat instead of looking at whatever beautiful nature they wanted me to look at. I know they gave me a little bit of a hard time about it, but, hey, you know, um, it was a memorable journey for sure (be)cause even to this day I still remember reading that book in the car and really enjoying it and having a really good time with it. So yeah, that’s my story.

I do not think that this is a 9 band answer,some points are not relevant to the topic and the candidate failed to fulfill the task achievement and proper response .This is worth to score 7

Is it ok to use transitional phrases when answering each question such as “My initial point would obviously be …” or “Moving onto the next area of when I traveled I remember …”? Does it sound like a native speaker?

I don’t think these kinds of phrases are common among native speakers. That said, I doubt they will lower your score and could help if they’re used correctly.

Tips for answering this Cue Card question:

You had the plan to visit this place for a long and when you had the journey, you had been excited about the whole thing.
You would meet a friend or relative after a long and that made you feel good.
You have some memories related to this place and visiting there was a good experience for you.
If this is a foreign country, say that you had a longing to visit this country.
The weather was comfortable and there was no interruption on the way.
You had friends with you and you enjoyed their company.
This was not a typical journey that you usually take.
The natural beauty surrounding the roads was charming.
You observed a few different customs and cultural aspects there.

Part 3: Details Discussion:

You did not intend to go there but you had no choice.
The weather was not good and that made the journey difficult.

Model Answer:

I have been fortunate enough to take several journeys before, both as an adult as well as a child, in my life that I remember well. But, in my humble opinion, a boat journey probably is the most fascinating of all. I would like to talk about one such fascinating boat journey which I took as a young college boy.

Anyway, my country is crisscrossed with many, many rivers. These rivers remain full of water and calm during the month of October (as the rainy season is over by then), and that’s when I and a couple of my friends decided to take a boat journey from one town to another which was divided by a large river. We decided to undertake this journey purely because we wanted to experience something new in our life.

By the way, it was about a couple of hours’ journey, and since none of us really had any experience of travelling such long distance in a boat, even though, we were naturally very excited, we were a bit nervous also at the same time. But, as we started our journey at around 8 in the morning, our professional boatman assured us that he would take us on the other side of the river without any troubles whatsoever.

We took an audio cassette player (from the old days) with us, and we also took a number of our favourite songs from some of the best singers in my country. We took this decision so that we would spend the beautiful morning singing, gossiping, hearing songs and seeing the beauty of a full river under the beautiful morning sunlight.

Anyway, I remember this journey well because it was for the first time that I could see a group of fishermen catching fish, live and from up close. In fact, I had never seen so many fishes jumping in the fishing net as if they were dancing in the water to impress us. Besides, the experience of watching the little waves of transparent water, rippling and shining the plate of silver in the river, is just too unique for me.

Model answer:

I have made many journeys in my life due to various purposes. For this topic card, I’m going to talk about a journey that I made by car because I recall it for the wonderful experience and fun I got during this journey.

I, along with two of my cousins and a friend, went to Chattagram, the business capital, and the place of the scenic beauty of my country about two and a half years ago. It was just a last-minute plan for us to decide to take a car instead of travelling by train. All four of us had received our driving permit and owned personal vehicles. So, we decided that we would rather drive there.

It took us around 12 hours for us to reach Chattagram from my residence in Sylhet. In fact, we could have reached there earlier, but being careful drivers we drove slowly bearing in mind the safety of each other. I never overlapped the limit of 80 kilometers during this long drive. In addition, we had two breaks on the freeway which also prolonged our journey.

My friend Shakeel and my cousins Reesah and Farah accompanied me on the journey. All of them are my childhood friends too and we have studied and graduated from the same university together. We also live in the same town. Besides, our families also are on good terms with theirs. Thus, I was certain that if I take them on this journey, it will be a journey worthy of remembrance. We did lots of fun on the way to Chattagram. We took selfies on our smartphone and had delicious home-made lunch prepared by Reesah and Farah. We sang songs loudly and smiled a lot. The wonderful sceneries around us and our favourite music in the car made the whole journey more thrilling and enjoyable. It was really a day of excitement and enjoyment.

As far as the reason goes, I decided to make this journey by car because my companions thought that it would be more amusing and relaxing. Not only that, but the air-tickets were also expensive for us and we did not want to spend a large sum of money just for a couple of hours’ flight. I believe it was the best decision to make and it proved to be so.

Model Answer 1: I have been lucky to have a number of memorable journeys over the years. So, thank you very much for offering me this great opportunity to share the experience of one of those journeys which I probably would never forget.

This journey, one of the most memorable ones of my life, took place when I just started my university, and I needed to visit my youngest uncle at a city, far away from my hometown, where he just had started his first job. So, naturally, I was quite excited. The excitement grew even bigger when one of my elder cousins, who also was travelling with me, informed me that we were actually going to make the journey with a high-speed train which just had started operating from my home town only a few weeks ago.

We were told that it was going to be a 6 to 7 hours journey and that train would travel, nonstop, at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour. So, it was a whole new experience for me, and I just couldn’t wait to board the train as soon as I arrived at the station. By the way, my cousin very smartly had selected a couple of window seats at the front of the brand new train, so we both knew that it was going to be a great experience, and it indeed was as the train started to run like a bullet with a whistle within seconds of starting our journey. The objects outside the train felt like they were just coming at our sight and vanishing like some ghosts within a fraction of a second.

Anyway, I remember every minute of this journey so well, mainly because I never really travelled on a train that ran so fast and furiously. I remember it also because the service on that train was awesome. Finally, I also tried some of the most delicious foods I have ever eaten, and that too at an affordable price!

Sample Answer 2: I went to the USA last month to attend a conference arranged for health journalists. It was an interesting journey and most importantly, my first flight out of my country, Greece. I was amazed by the journey and the experience will be memorable always. This cue card appears exciting and I will describe the event in brief now.

I travelled by aeroplane and also used some other local transports in the USA. But the journey by aeroplane was the most impressive one in my life. It took around 11 hours to reach the USA from Greece. I reached the airport in my private car and then boarded in the aeroplane. I was too excited that I could not sleep the entire time. Initially, I felt a bit of uncomfortable as it was my first air ride too. But gradually I coped with the situation. I had to visit the country for some official purposes. I am a senior reporter of health in a national newspaper of Greece. A conference of the journalists dealing with health issues was supposed to take place in the USA. My office authority selected me to join the conference. I was chosen for my extraordinary performance in reporting about the health issues of the country.

I can recall every detail of the journey. In fact, I was really happy to have the chance to visit America and the flight was really enjoyable. I joined at the conference and presented a paper as well which was appreciated heavily by the other participants at the conference. Moreover, I also received a prestigious certificate for participating in this international conference. I had visited in different parts of New York, where the conference took place. Considering everything, it was a great trip in my life and I will never forget my experience from this trip.

I rode on the bus in time and reached at the exact time. I also met some people during the ride who sat beside me on the bus. Overall, it was a memorable journey.

4. I went on a trip with my family in Singapore. It was not a long journey. And we landed in Singapore earlier than we e4xpected. All the family members were present during the journey. We all wanted to have a vacation in Singapore and also meet some relatives there. The journey was memorable as we all had great fun. The entire vacation was filled with joy and delight. I felt sad while returning back to Hong Kong.

5. Group journeys are not always interesting as people of different classes and mentality get together. But I am lucky in that sense. We went to visit Mount Fuji and it was a mixed journey. The group has used different types of vehicles and even walked on feet. I wanted to see the mountain from a close distance and so, I became a part of the group. It was an interesting journey and an advantageous experience for me.

A Journey I Have Made

Introduction: Among many quick sources of travel provided by modem science, the bus has become an important means of transport. In towns and cities, we avail ourselves of riding buses to move conveniently from one place to another. Though we travel to short distances by bus, a long-distance journey is a very interesting experience.

The journey Recently: I have had an opportunity to make a long journey by bus. It was from Dhaka to Chittagong. I was going home to visit my parents during the summer vacation. Very early in the morning, I rode long route bus, which only goes to Chittagong. The bus conductor in his peculiar voice was inviting the passengers to board the bus, and it was named “Shohag Paribahan.” I took a ticket beforehand. The bus started exactly at 7:30 am.

An interesting part of the journey: Plying at a reasonable speed the bus soon left the city and entered the countryside. There were green fields and lush crops on both sides of the high way through which we were trave1ling. The bus ran on leaving behind every· thing, the houses, the hµts, the stretch of villages and cornfields, the woods and hats (market places) on either side. All these sights filled me with pleasant feelings. I was thrilled, with the sights and scenes of nature as well as the humble people of the villages, seen on the sides.

River crossing: The most interesting part of the journey, I was crossing the river Meghna. near Dautkandi. After two hours, our bus reached ferry ghat. The driver politely requested us to get down from the bus for our own safety. At the ghat, there was a strange mixture of noise and activity. The honking of horns, the roars of engines of different vehicles, the general uproar of the passengers were all a part of my bus journey. Getting down from the bus, I felt a great relief from the suffocating atmosphere, of the crowded vehicle. There was a slight discomfort in the ferry at the monotonous cries of vendors, hawkers, and the beggars. Still crossing the river by ferry in the gentle breeze was very pleasant indeed. During the course of journey, I had occasional tension at times when the reckless drivers of other vehicles like trucks and other buses tried to overtake our bus. Once we had a hair, breath ·escape from a collision with a truck.

Destination: The bus stopped only at Comilla, where some passengers got down and some others got in it. I had my seat near the window. The bus started to move again. It made me drowsy. I was awakened with a start when the bus suddenly braked to stop. I found that I had reached my destination, Chittagong Bus Terminal. It took us nearly four and half hours to reach. I got down from the bus, with my cramped muscles and stiff limbs, along with my single luggage. I was overjoyed to see my father there, who had come to receive me.

Conclusion: Thus my journey by bus was very enlighting and pleasant. I really enjoyed the experience

Taking trips to all kinds of places is a part of our daily life, whether we travel in our private vehicles or use some kind of public transportation. Of course, as far as I am concerned, I am more comfortable to take my trips on my motorbike when I am travelling short distances. But, when I travel long distances, I usually use public transportation, and today I would like to talk about one such long-distance trips which I took about a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I took the trip to attend a wedding ceremony of one of my cousins who lives about a couple of kilometres away from me in another city. Since it was a long trip, I naturally wanted to use public transportation except, of course, I just couldn’t decide on whether to use a public bus or public train. Buses travel usually faster than train in my country but they don’t usually provide an opportunity to freshen up or eat any kind of food or snacks during the journey. But, on the other hands, even though, trains run a bit slow, they all offer the opportunity for refreshment. In fact, all of the public trains in my country have canteens to offer food for the travellers, and of course, they also have washrooms to freshen up.

So, after considering the pros and cons of using both types of public transportation, I finally decided to make my trip on a public train. Of course, it took me a little longer to arrive at my destination with train, but the trip was comfortable, and relaxing, especially, because of playing some “classical and hit songs” throughout the entire journey.

Anyway, I chose to use public transportation, primarily because it provided more safety and security in my travel. In fact, I didn’t have to worry about getting involved in any kind of unfortunate event or accident. Besides, I found travelling by train more comfortable and relaxing because it provided a much larger space to manoeuvre around when I needed to stretch a little. Finally, I never felt any travel fatigue after arriving at my destination.

Though I own a car, I often use public transportation. I do so to allow other family members to use my car for their own important tasks and sometimes I use public transportation, like the bus, to travel a long distance, especially to a different city. Some of the remote areas are not quite as easy to travel by cars and for those places, I use public transportation like the rickshaw, taxi or the rented motorbike. One such trip that I remember I took 2 years ago when I visited one of my aunts’ house. My aunt was married to a civil engineer and they had 3 kids. Their living place was kind of a remote area and took almost 10-12 hours to reach. It was the mid-autumn when I had the trip and I alone went there. I had to use 3-4 different public transportation to finally reach my aunt’s house.

I took a bus and it stopped when we reached near a river after 4-5 hours journey. I had to use a boat to pass the river and after that, I took another bus and finally an auto-rickshaw to reach my aunt’s living place.

The trip was a long one and it was neither a very pleasant journey nor a very disturbing one as well. Changing the transportation a few times, carrying two such heavy bags was something that annoyed me. But I enjoyed the natural scenery, a different routine than the usual busy life, scenic beauty on both sides of the road, the beautiful river and the new people and place. I mostly listened to music from my MP3 player and read a magazine on my journey and I enjoyed that also.

I took public transportation mainly for 3 reasons. Firstly, I left it home so that other family members can use it if needed as I would be away for about a week. Secondly, I did not know the exact route to the place I travelled and that’s why it would have been a bit uncertain to take my private car to a route that I have no idea about. Finally, it was a remote area and taking my car would have caused extra tension like parking it, fueling it and that why I preferred to take the journey in public transportation.

Well, every day I go to college in public transport. According to me, public transportation is safe for long journeys as well as for short visits. But here I would like to talk about a visit which I made via a bus. I explain it briefly. About two months ago, I had made a plan to go to the Golden Temple Amritsar with my two friends. We decided to travel via bus.

According to our plan, we reached the bus station in my hometown Moga. On the bus station, We bought eatable things and beverages to drink. We took a bus in which only a few people were traveling. During this journey, We sit on the same seat on the bus. We shared many views with each other. My one friend who was traveling with us is a very talkative person. He makes each and every moment memorable with his funny and captivating talk. He was doing funny activities on the bus. After some time, When the bus conductor came near to seat, then we got a ticket from him.

When one hour passed during the journey, we ate the food which we carried with us. Then, we reached the city of Amritsar after one hour. We went out of the bus and took a cab to reach GoldenTemple. We went in just ten minutes. We did supplication over there for the goodness of our loving families.

Moreover, I prayed to God for the strong relationship between us three friends. After prayer, we came back to the bus station and took the bus to reach home. Eventually, till the evening, we came back to my hometown. So, that was the time when I went with my friend by bus.

In our daytoday life we visit many places for various purposes. Sometimes we use our own vehicle and sometimes we use public transport. Normally when I have to go somewhere near then I use car but for distant places I use public transport. Here I am going to talk about a visit for which I used public transport. Actually, last month, I went to Jaipur Rajasthan with my family. This time we used bus for going to Jaipur. There is a tour operator company near my hometown known as Express Travels.

My father booked this tour through them. There were 12 other families with us. It was vacation time and so children were also there with their parents. We boarded the bus at 7 am. On the way we enjoyed a lot. I made many friends and we played antakshri.

The bus made three halts on the way to Jaipur. We straightened our legs and had refreshments at those stops. The bus was an AC coach and was very comfortable. There was also an LCD in the bus and we saw the movie Sargi. We reached Jaipur at 7 pm. We stayed at hotel Gangaur which was a very nice hotel. We saw the Amer Fort, Hawa Mahal, The City Palace and many other places. One whole day we had reserved for shopping.

My mother bought some Jaipuri quilts and I bought some lakh jewellery. As it was a package holiday, we enjoyed with the other families and made many friends. I still have good friends from that trip and we are in touch with each other through facebook.

Describe a journey you remember well

I remember one particular journey I went on when I was about six years old, with my parents.

We travelled by car up north and the thing that I remember most was the amazing scenic beauty which was quite different from where we used to live.

I couldn’t really remember seeing big mountains before that trip, but the ones I saw were so huge and steep that I recall being seriously impressed by them.

I also saw some amazing rivers running down through the mountains and I can remember there was a waterfall, with the water cascading down the side of one of the mountains, and I also saw a lot of animals that you wouldn’t normally see living in a city.

It was a long trip, I seem to remember it took most of the day, although we stopped every few hours to take a break and have something to eat before continuing.

I remember that for a lot of the time I just sat in the car and my face was like pushed up to the window just watching all these things go past as we travelled along the road.

Every time I thought I had seen the tallest mountain – we would go round the next bend in the road and there was an even taller mountain right in front.

As we went up the mountain road you could see right down into the valley below and I remember feeling a little afraid because I thought if the car fell off the road then we would drop all the way down to the bottom – it was a long way down. It’s funny thinking about it now.

I guess that particular journey was important for me because it was the first time I really remember seeing really different landscape from the normal things I would see where I grew up – so it was really impressive and I can still remember the colours and the different smells in the air as we drove along the road.

Describe A Journey That You Remember Well

One of my best travel experiences was in improving my English skills with an International House exchange student in Washington D.C., USA on a Summer break in 1997.

My journey started when I heard about English language schools in Washington D.C. from an advertisement in a magazine. This was my main motivation to visit the capital of the United States for the first time and learn new things at the same time.

I packed my suitcase with simple clothes because I learned that American students wore casual clothes a lot due to hot weather conditions in summer. Besides, shopping was easy as all stores were open late so I could buy whatever else if needed without difficulty or interruption during my stay in America, according to information printed on travel brochures and recommendations from friends who had visited the U.S.

To be honest, it seemed an exciting journey but also a great adventure for me since it would be something completely different from my daily life as a student.

The flight was long and uncomfortable but when I arrived in the United States it was worth it. New, fresh air and never-ending space gave me complete invigoration.

I had been to America 3 years back with some family members on vacation, but that was a different trip altogether, and so I was very excited to see some exciting places this time around.

When we first landed the place felt unfamiliar as it wasn't exactly what I was expecting from a big city like Washington. It seemed smaller than I had thought. But then there were many skyscrapers which were an interesting sight for me as they stood tall in their glory.

And another beautiful thing about those buildings was that they had a light glittering façade from the sun reflected off mirrored walls during the daytime, giving them an appearance of a huge diamond adorning the skyline.

During my trip, I visited several places of interest, ate some food that I had never tried before, and of course, I improved my English a lot because I was speaking it all the time and my American friends decided to teach me their language.

But I remember two days there when I was just strolling on foot and soaking up the atmosphere, listening to the sound of the city's life whirring around me like an ocean murmur in a shell.

Several skyscrapers were blocking most of the sunlight from reaching street level, casting tall shadows that blocked out everything except the noise of people talking and cars honking.

But it was at night where the city really came alive, even more than during the daytime: lights were shining brightly everywhere you looked. It was almost too bright for my eyes as we walked down streets.

Overall, what I remember well about the journey and experience is all the things I saw, all the people I met and everything else that happened.

I remember how great it felt being in a new place with plenty of new things to see, do and experience.

One thing that struck me about my journey is that there was always somewhere new to go, somewhere you had never been before.

Not only this but the city seemed to have more and more places to go every time you explored it; there were mountains on one side, lakes on another, forests nearby… this made me feel like I could explore for years without ever knowing the entire area.

I felt sad when it was time to leave, even thouogh I was going home. I will always remember the journey as one of the best I've ever experienced!

I've been fortunate to have a lot of special trips over the years. So, I'd like to thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity to share the story of one of those experiences that I'll probably never forget.

When I was just beginning my academic career and required to travel to my youngest uncle's new job in a city far from my birthplace, I took one of the most unforgettable journeys of my life. I was therefore understandably very excited. The anticipation increased when one of my older cousins, who was also traveling with me, revealed that we would actually be taking a high-speed train, which had only recently begun service from my hometown.

We were informed that the trip would last 6 to 7 hours and that the train would move at a constant pace of 200 kilometers per hour. Because it was a completely new experience for me, I was eager to catch the train as soon as I got to the station. By the way, my cousin had very wisely chosen two window seats at the front of the brand-new train, so we both knew it was going to be a terrific experience, and it really was when the train started to run like a bullet with a whistle within seconds of beginning our journey.

Anyway, I can vividly recall every moment of this trip, in large part because I had never before taken a train that moved so quickly and angrily. I also remember it since the train's service was fantastic. Last but not least, I also sampled some of the most delectable things I've ever had—and they were all reasonably priced!

Why do people need to travel every day?

Most of the time, people have to travel for work or for their jobs every day. Attending classes or institutions also necessitates daily travel. Aside from that, we would also need to travel everyday if we needed to visit certain significant family members who lived nearby and needed our daily attendance for certain reasons, including illness.

What problems can people have when they are on their daily journey, for example, to work or school? Why is this?

When traveling regularly, people may run into a variety of issues. They can be late for school or work if they are stopped in traffic for an extended amount of time. People now inhabit a world that resembles a global village, and for both economic and cultural reasons, it is more important than ever that we engage with one another. Therefore, when we visit other nations, we have a deeper understanding of their customs, cultures, and ways of life. And the more knowledge we have about people, the simpler it will be for us to find points of mutual interest. Our hearts and eyes are opened to respecting the beliefs and values of others when we travel, and this is crucial if we want to rid the world of ignorance, prejudice, and hostility.

Can travel make a positive difference to the economy of a country? How?

Travel does have a positive impact on a nation's economy by fostering and expanding that nation's tourism sector. As more and more tourists travel to a given nation to experience and learn about its culture and national heritage, more international firms, remittances, and job opportunities will typically be brought to the host nation by diversifying its economy. Additionally, tourism contributes to the goodwill of a nation. Additionally, a country's total economy will grow as a result of the increased large-scale investments it draws from the world's economic giants.

Do you think a society can benefit if its members have experience of traveling to other countries? In what ways?

Traveling to foreign nations will certainly lead to the discovery of fresh perspectives and business chances. One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to the Tegalalang Rice Terrace, which offered breathtaking views of the lush green landscape and traditional Balinese farming practices. We also explored the town of Ubud, which is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene. We visited a number of galleries and artisan workshops, where we saw firsthand how Balinese artists create their beautiful works of art.

I remember this journey so well because it was a truly eye-opening experience for me. I had never been to Asia before, and I was blown away by the incredible beauty and diversity of the island. From the vibrant culture to the stunning landscapes, Bali offered something new and exciting around every corner.

I would like to talk about a journey that I took to Singapore a few years ago. I traveled to Singapore with my family for a short vacation. We flew from our home country to Changi Airport in Singapore, which is known for its efficiency and cleanliness.

During our stay, we visited a number of tourist attractions around the city. One of the highlights was the Marina Bay Sands, which is a famous landmark in Singapore that features a stunning infinity pool overlooking the city skyline. We also visited the Gardens by the Bay, which is a beautiful botanical garden that showcases a diverse range of flora and fauna .

Another memorable experience was visiting the famous hawker centers in Singapore, where we got to sample a wide variety of local dishes. We tried everything from chicken rice to chili crab, and everything was mouth-watering !

I remember this journey well because Singapore is such a unique and vibrant city. It’s a fascinating mix of modernity and tradition, and there’s always something new and exciting to discover. From the stunning architecture to the scrumptious food, I was constantly impressed by everything that Singapore had to offer. I mean, the gorgeous landscapes never cease to amaze me .

Changing our hair, getting divorced, taking spa vacations — they’re not just things we do; they’re “journeys.” The quest for better health is the greatest journey of all.

Drew Barrymore has been talking with Gayle King about her perimenopause “journey ,” and the soccer phenom Carli Lloyd has just divulged her fertility “journey .” By sharing her breast cancer story, Olivia Munn has said she hopes she will “help others find comfort, inspiration, and support on their own journey.” A recent interview with Anne Hathaway has been posted on Instagram with a headline highlighting her “ sobriety journey ,” and Kelly Clarkson has opened up about what Women’s Health calls her “ weight loss journey .” On TikTok, a zillion influencer-guides lead pilgrims on journeys through such ephemeral realms as faith, healing, grief, friendship, mastectomy, and therapy — often selling courses, supplements or eating plans as if they were talismans to help safeguard their path.

“Journey” has decisively taken its place in American speech. The word holds an upbeat utility these days, signaling struggle without darkness or detail, and expressing — in the broadest possible way — an individual’s experience of travails over time.

It’s often related to physical or mental health, but it can really be about anything: “Putting on your socks can be a journey of self-discovery,” said Beth Patton, who lives in Central Indiana and has relapsing polychondritis, an inflammatory disorder. In the chronic disease community, she said, “journey” is a debated word. “It’s a way to romanticize ordinary or unpleasant experiences, like, ‘Oh, this is something special and magical.’” Not everyone appreciates this, she said.

According to the linguistics professor Jesse Egbert at Northern Arizona University, the use of “journey” (the noun) has nearly doubled in American English since 1990, with the most frequent instances occurring online. Mining a new database of conversational American English he and colleagues are building, Egbert could show exactly how colloquial “journey” has become: One woman in Pennsylvania described her “journey to become a morning person,” while another, in Massachusetts, said she was “on a journey of trying to like fish.”

Egbert was able to further demonstrate how the word itself has undergone a transformative journey — what linguists call “semantic drift.” It wasn’t so long ago that Americans mostly used “journey” to mean a literal trip, whereas now it’s more popular as a metaphor. Egbert demonstrated this by searching the more than one billion words in a database called COCA for the nouns people put before “journey” to clarify what sort they’re on. Between 1990 and 2005, the most common modifier was “return,” followed by words like “ocean,” “train,” “mile,” “night,” “overland,” and “bus.”

But between 2006 and 2019, usage shifted. “Return” remains the most common noun modifier to journey, but now it’s followed closely by “faith,” “cancer,” and “life.” Among the top 25 nouns used to modify “journey” today are: “soul,” “adoption,” and “hair.”

In almost every language, “journey” has become a way to talk abstractly about outcomes, for good reason: According to what linguists call the “primary metaphor theory,” humans learn as babies crawling toward their toys that “‘purpose’ and ‘destination’ coincide,” said Elena Semino, a linguist at Lancaster University who specializes in metaphor. As we become able to accomplish our goals while sitting still (standardized tests! working from home!), ambition and travel diverge. Yet we continue to envision achievement as a matter of forward progress. This is why we say, “‘I know what I want, but I don’t know how to get there,’” Semino explained. “Or ‘I’m at a crossroads.’”

So it’s not surprising, perhaps, that as Americans started seeing good health as a desirable goal, achievable through their own actions and choices — and marketers encouraged these pursuits and commodified them — the words “journey” and “health” became inextricably linked. In 1898, C.W. Post wrote a pamphlet he called “The Road to Wellville,” which he attached to each box of his new product, Grape-Nuts. In 1926, the Postum Cereal Company republished the pamphlet as a small book , now with the subtitle, “A Personally Conducted Journey to the Land of Good Health by the Route of Right Living.”

The language (and business) of self-help so completely saturates culture, “it gets kind of hard to trace where a word started and where it came from,” said Jessica Lamb-Shapiro, author of “Promise Land: My Journey Through America’s Self-Help Culture.” Americans like to put an optimistic, brave spin on suffering, and “journey” seeped in because, Lamb-Shapiro speculated, it’s bland enough to “tackle really difficult things,” yet positive enough to “make them palatable and tolerable.”

“Journey” had fully entered medical speak by the 2010s. Many cancer patients recoiled from the “battle” language traditionally used by doctors, as well as by friends and relatives. In “Illness as Metaphor,” Susan Sontag had noted back in 1978 that “every physician and every attentive patient is familiar with, if perhaps inured to, this military terminology.” But now, opposition to the notion of disease as an enemy combatant reached a crescendo. To reflexively call an experience of cancer a battle created “winners” and “losers,” where death or long suffering represented a failure — of will, strength, determination, diet, behavior, or outlook — on the part of the patient.

Many patients “detest” the military metaphor, Robert Miller conceded in Oncology Times in 2010. Knowing this, Miller, then a breast cancer oncologist affiliated with Johns Hopkins, said he struggled to find the right words in composing a condolence note to a patient’s spouse. “I welcome suggestions,” he wrote.

“Journey” seemed less judgmental, more neutral. In Britain, the National Health Service had started to almost exclusively use “journey” language in reference to cancer (treatments were “pathways”). Semino, the metaphor expert whose father had died of cancer at a time when patients’ diagnoses were hidden from them, wanted to examine how patients talked about it — and whether that language caused them harm. In a research paper Semino published with colleagues in 2015, she looked at how patients talked about their cancer on forums online and found that they still used “battle” as often as they did “journey,” and that “journey” could be disempowering, as well.

For some people, talking about cancer as a “journey” gave them a sense of control and camaraderie — buddies traveling the same path — but others used the term to convey their exhaustion. Having cancer “is like trying to drive a coach and horses uphill with no back wheels on the coach,” one man wrote. Patients used “journey” to describe just how passive they felt or how reluctant to bear the burden of their disease. Separately, patients have told Semino how much they hate the word “journey,” saying it trivializes their experience, that it’s clichéd.

But it was too late: The metaphor already was everywhere. In 2014, Anna Wintour was asked which word she would like to banish from the fashion lexicon and she said, “journey.” The following year, Yolanda Foster, the mother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, told People magazine that while she was on her Lyme disease journey, two of her children were afflicted, too. Medical journals and government publications began describing insomnia , the effort to achieve health-care reform , diabetes , and the development of RSV vaccines as a journey. The term “healing journey,” in use since at least the mid-2010s, blew up around 2021. The phrase in news media referenced the experience of cancer , celebrity weight loss , trafficking of Indigenous children , Sean Combs’s creative process , spa vacations , amputation , and better sex .

On the Reddit channel Chronic Illness, one poster eloquently fumed that persistent sickness is not a journey. “It’s endless, pointless and repetitive. There’s no new ground to gain here.” The cultural insistence on illness as a journey, from which a traveler can learn useful, or even life-changing lessons, becomes something to “disassociate from, survive, endure.” It “causes social isolation.”

Although she concedes its downsides, Stephanie Swanson likes to think of herself as on a journey. Swanson, who is 37 and lives in Kansas City, was an engineer by training, with three young children, a career and a sideline as an aerialist, when she got long Covid in the summer of 2022. The things that had made her successful — her physical stamina, her ability to solve problems — evaporated. “I’ve had to give up my career, my hobbies, my physical abilities,” she said. “I’ve gained 30 pounds on my tiny dancer body. I’m doing the best I can with what I have.”

Swanson makes a distinction between “journey” and “trip”: The latter is circumscribed by a start, an end, and hotel and restaurant reservations along the way. She sees “journey” as a way to capture the arc of a whole life.

When she was running operations at a medical center at the University of Kansas, she always imagined slowing down to enjoy her kids more or to read a book, but “I felt like my head was going to explode.” Now Swanson has become a person who must rent a wheelchair for her upcoming trip to New York City, and she likes how “journey” accommodates all the challenging, unexpected circumstances she confronts. “To me, the word ‘journey’ resonates with choosing to be on a path of acceptance but not standing still,” she said. “I’m not giving up, but recognizing that this is the path I’m on.”

Ramani Durvasula uses “journey” advisedly. A clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who treats women in emotionally abusive relationships, she recognizes how “journey” has been “eye-rollingly cheapened” and has started to experiment with alternatives. She’s tried “process.” She’s tried “healing trajectory.” But she falls back on journey, because it, more than any other word, expresses the step-by-step, sometimes circular or backward nature of enduring something hard. “Arguably, a journey doesn’t have a destination,” she said. “Have you ever taken a hike in a loop? And you end up exactly where you parked your car?”

But Durvasula does object to the easy-breezy healing so many journey hashtags promote, what she calls the “post-sobriety, post-weight-loss, now-I’m-in-love-again-after-my-toxic-relationship” reels. Too many TikToks show the crying in the car then the cute party dress, skipping over the middle, when people feel ugly, angry, self-loathing, and hopeless. “I want to see the hell,” she said. “I want to see the nightmare.”

When in 2020 a Swedish linguist named Charlotte Hommerberg studied how advanced cancer patients describe their experience, she found they used “battle” and “journey,” like everyone else. But most also used a third metaphor that conveyed not progress, fight or hope. They said cancer was like “imprisonment,” a feeling of being stuck — like a “free bird in a cage,” one person wrote. Powerless and going nowhere.

Journey is always fascinating. It charms our mind and make us happy. Journey is a break in our monotonous everyday life. After a journey we feel relaxed and fresh. Peace fills our heart after we have made a really wonderful journey.

I have recently made a journey by train with my friends. I received a letter from my uncle at Chattogram to attend the marriage ceremony of his daughter. I took some of my friends with me. Early in the morning I reached Kamalapur Railway Station where I found my other friends. The train came. We found seats in a carriage in the waiting train, saw our luggage put in, and then settled down for the journey. The guard blew his whistle and waved his green flag, the engine slowly began to move and we glided out of the station.

Everything that we were passing was pretty and so we amused ourselves by looking through the passed by green field, beautiful watery areas and wonderful hillocks. Everything seemed very windows. As the train winded away, eastwards, we could see a number of hills and mountains. We

bright and pleasant to us. From the train, we could see the clear, green waters and women and small boys and girls swimming happily and taking bath in the ponds and rivers.

At noon we took our lunch in the train. The dishes were not so bad. We took a lot. The journey was highly enjoyable. Some of my friends started to sing. Other passengers were also enjoying our childish attitudes. Some were enjoying the scenery of the way. Some people were also sleeping or reading books. After all, all of us were enjoying the time in our own ways.

At last at 4 pm we reached Chattogram. The road was really wonderful. The journey seemed to me like a dream. However, when we reached Chattogram, we found my uncle waiting for us. He welcomed us and took to his residence. Thus our wonderful journey ended very beautifully.

It was really an exciting journey that filled my heart with thrill and excitement. I could never forget it in my whole life. Whenever I recollect the memories of that day, I feel something extraordinarily wonderful is going to happen in my heart which I am unable to explain. I can only feel it and enjoy it.

A few days ago I made a journey by train from Dhaka to Chittagong. My destination was the residence of my uncle who lives in Chittagong now. On the occasion of my cousin's wedding ceremony I was invited with my parents to attend the wedding party. In this way an opportunity of train journey came to me.

On the fixed day we reached the Kamalapur Railway Station. Purchasing three tickets for Chittagong we got into the train. The bell rang and the guard blew his whistle and waved his green flag. With little jerk the train started to move on. At first the train moved on slowly. The speed of the train gradually increased. The station remained behind left. I looked outside through the window. We enjoyed beautiful green fields, orchard and trees on the both sides. We saw the farmers working in the field and cattle grazing here and there. In the meantime we entered Chittagong District and started enjoying the hills there. On the right the vast sheet of the water of the Bay-of-Bengal raised a sudden tremor in all the body of mine. I became thrilled. Gradually the sun was going to the western sky.

It was evening when we reached the Chittagong Station. My uncle was eagerly waiting for us at the station. We safely reached my uncle's residence.

It is the only train journey in my life till today. So that, the first as well as the recent train journey has overwhelmed me much. I have learnt many things from it. Because this journey was a new experience to me. I can not help recalling this journey often as the sweet memory of this journey has filled me with eternal joy.

Introduction : A journey by train is very pleasant and enjoyable. Journey is always interesting. It welcomes people of all classes. A few days ago, I made a journey by train from Dhaka to Chittagong.

Occasion: During the last summer vacation one of my friends invited us to his village home, Chittagong. So I along with my parents went there by train.

Description of my journey by train : On the fixed day, we reached the Kamalapur Railway station at 7:30 am. My father brought tickets. I took my seat by the window. The guard blew the whistle and the train began to move on. It started with a ratting sound. A gentle breeze entered into the compartment. I felt fresh and cold. Gradually the speed of the train increased. I peeped outside. The train was passing through the green fields. I fed my eyes with expanded sights and scenes. Trees and house seemed to run behind. We saw the farmer working in the fields. Cattle were grazing here and there. The train stopped at a station. I brought boiled eggs, bananas, magazines etc from the hawkers. When the train started from the station, I saw the hills of Chittagong. On the right, I saw the vast sheet of water of the Bay of Bengal. Gradually the sun was setting in the western sky. The golden rays of the declining sun fell on the water. The whole water of the Bay of Bengal turned reddish. The scenery was too much charming to give my mind into another fields. All these pleased me. In the midst of my reverie, the train reached Chittagong at 5 p.m I got down from the train. I saw hills on both the side of the railway line. I found my friend who came to receive me. Then, we safely reached my friend's house.

Conclusion : The journey gave us immense pleasure. The memory of the journey will remain ever fresh in heart.

I have travelled by train many times. But these were short Journeys. One day, my father told us that he is going to Dhaka on a business trip. He decided to take the whole family with him. We were thrilled to hear this good news. We packed our luggage and went to Chittagong Railway Station by train, as our real journey was to start from there. At Chittagong Railway Station, we boarded the Sonar Bangla Express for Dhaka. We travelled in a second class AC compartment.

The journey was very comfortable. We passed through many states. I looked out during the day and enjoyed the scenery all along. We saw cattle grazing, people working in the fields, beautiful flower Gardens and orchards of fruit trees. Our train made very few halts. Meals was served at regular interval. We enjoyed the delicious food.

The scenery along the Chittagong Hill tract was really very beautiful. Our train passed through many tunnels. At last we reached our destination. We can never forget our journey.

It is more exciting than a journey by boat or by bus. It relieves and a man from the monotony of daily life. It is more attractive, especially to the students. It is because it gives them an opportunity to escape from the daily routine-bound work and books and classrooms at least for the time being.

The occasion of the journey: I had a prolonged desire to make a journey by train. At last, an opportunity came last year. It was the time of summer vacation. One of my friends invited me to spend a week with him in Chittagong. I availed myself of the opportunity with a half an hour before the departure of the train. The station was fully crowded. Hawkers were crying out with a shrill voice to vend their goods. Coolies were pushing their way through with heavy loads on their heads. However, the train arrived in time.

Beginning of the journey: I become very surprised to see that there was a long queue before the booking counter. I had to join the queue to buy a ticket. I bought a second-class ticket and got into the compartment. It was fully packed up with passengers. I occupied a seat beside the window. The time was up. The guard blew his whistle and waved his flag. The train then started to move with a jerk. A gentle breeze came in and soothed my mind. I heaved a great sigh of relief. I found that some of my co-passengers were engaged in gossiping. While some were looking into newspapers and magazines.

Destination: the crimson the crimson rays of the setting sun produced a very wonderful view of the western sky. The moon was smiling overhead. The stars were peeping and shining around the moon like the swarms of golden Bess. I was just struck with wonder and felt like saying,

“Twinkle, twinkle, little star; How I wonder what you are!”

I reached my station at about 8 p.m. I saw my friend waiting at the station. He welcomed me with open arms and took me to his residence. Thus my journey came to end.

Feelings after journey: though my journey came to an end it seemed that the time had passed away so swiftly. Let me recall the words of Keats,

“The day so soon has glided by, Even like the passage of an angel’s tear.”

I felt, my imagination kept roaming about with my senses all over the passed-by way. Still, now, it floats up before my mind’s eye and gives me immense joy and pleasure. My feelings can best express in the words of the poet.

“I gazed and gazed but little thought, What wealth the show to me had brought.”

Conclusion: it was really a happy journey for me. It added a new experience to the storehouse of my knowledge. It also let me understand well that experience is the best teacher. It is needless to say that the memory of the journey shall remain ever fresh in my mind.

Now, fans of the franchise might finally get some answers with the upcoming third installment of the film, The Strangers: Chapter 1 , which serves as a prequel to the 2008 film and has two subsequent films already in the pipeline. Chapter 2 is said to be released in either September or October, while Chapter 3 will have an early 2025 release.

As you can see, the trailer does well to include several throwbacks to the 2008 film, such as the eerie and sociopathic response to the question “Why are you doing this?” as well as an ax chopping through the front door as the protagonists desperately attempt to keep The Strangers outside the house. Just as the first and second films of the franchise had iconic “creepy” song moments, the trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1 adds a new seemingly lighthearted song to the collection: “Trouble” by Cage the Elephant .

Under the direction of Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a prequel to the events of the 2008 film, The Strangers . As a young couple, Maya and Ryan, travel to the Pacific Northwest to begin a new life with each other. Maya is played by Riverdale ’s Madelaine Petsch and her boyfriend of five years, Ryan, played by Froy Gutierrez ( Hocus Pocus 2 ). When their car unexpectedly breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they decide to stay the night at a rented Airbnb. Just as they’re settling into their new accommodations for the night, they are approached by a stranger who knocks on their door, asking for “Tamara.” After they turn the stranger away, saying they must be at the wrong house, the rest of the night is filled with terror as three masked strangers torment the couple from outside and within the house.

The only other clues and theories that eagle-eyed fans have speculated about this prequel movie lie within one of the last lines from the original film. “It’ll be easier next time.” Which is said by one of the female perpetrators to the other. This presumably comes from Pin-Up Girl to Dollface after they stop the car and Dollface receives a pamphlet from the young boys sharing their religious information throughout the neighborhood. When the boy asked if she “was a sinner,” her response was “Sometimes.”

This would imply that The Strangers: Chapter 1 could include the first time that Dollface was introduced to this murderous lifestyle by the Man in the Mask and his partner, Pin-Up Girl, as the two of them are shown in the trailer to appear to be leaning against each other affectionately. Also, in the new trailer, we see two boys who are similarly aged and dressed as the ones from the first film, further implying that Dollface was possibly the only one who felt conflicted about her actions in the 2008 film after she saw the boys on the road at the end of the movie.

Both The Strangers and The Strangers: Prey at Night are currently available to watch on the streaming service, Max, and are also available to rent or purchase on other streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and others. From Trash to Cash: How AI and Machine Learning Can Help Make Recycling Less Expensive for Local Governments

Recycling costs local governments a lot of money, but AI can help make that process less costly — potentially leading to more recycling. NIST research is looking to make recycling more efficient and less expensive.

What happens to your plastic recycling after you toss it in “the bin”?

This question seems to be in the news a lot lately (see here , here or here ).

In truth, the answer is complicated. It depends on where you live and what that plastic is.

Collecting recycling costs local governments a lot of money. They need to maintain facilities to handle the plastics as well as the trucks and bins to collect them. Governments also need to hire people to do the work. It can be a lot cheaper to just put everything in a landfill.

However, when local governments recycle, they can turn trash into cash if they have the correct infrastructure. They can offset some of the costs by selling the collected plastic back to manufacturers. Most manufacturers want recycled plastic that is almost as good as brand-new plastic, but that requires careful sorting by the recyclers to provide a consistent product.

For many people, all plastic seems the same. However, those with a keen eye know that there are seven types of common plastic. You can identify them by the little recycling symbol on the bottom of almost all plastic containers. These numbers help identify the chemistry behind those plastics. You may have noticed them when sorting your own recycling.

Below is an explanation of some of these materials:

Sorting these plastics is incredibly important. Different plastics with some similar characteristics often can’t be mixed because they require different melting procedures.

Take PVC, for example. Used in everything from plumbing to window blinds, PVC creates a strong acid with many industrial uses when melted. But like many other acids, it’s not something you want to make when you’re not expecting it.

Polyolefins, the group of plastics that includes HDPE (used in milk bottles), LDPE (used in plastic bags) and PP (used in takeout containers), provide a much tamer example. This group of plastics makes up about 40% of the world’s plastic production . They’re also some of the hardest to sort.

The type of plastic used in milk bottles requires high temperatures to melt and reprocess due to its crystalline structure. However, if plastic bag contaminants are in the mix, the bags will degrade at those high temperatures. So, if a plastic bag gets into the recycling mix with a milk bottle, it could lead to a gross, yellow milk bottle that no one wants to drink from. This processing risk is one of the many reasons you’re unlikely to see any milk bottles made of recycled plastics.

Additionally, if some high-temperature stable materials from takeout containers end up in a plastic bag process line, you’re likely to see clogged-up machinery.

Theoretically, you can easily sort plastic waste by using the little recycling symbol. Then, you can sell those sorted plastics to secondary recyclers, who will turn that sorted waste into products.

The price depends on the assumed purity of the plastic. A bale of large, orange laundry detergent bottles is likely to sell for a high price because it is easy to pick those items out. However, a bunch of takeout containers can easily have a mix of plastics with various colors or additives.

At the local recycling facility in Montgomery County, Maryland, people hand-sort laundry detergent bottles, food containers and more. However, human hands and eyes can only move so fast, and mistakes are easy at that speed. So, recycling facilities focus on sorting high-value or easy-to-identify plastics to have consistency in what they are selling to secondary recyclers. That means detergent bottles and beverage containers are recycled at high rates. Your plastic “silverware” and old children’s toys are probably not.

To help facilitate sorting, our work at NIST has been focused on using near-visible infrared light (NIR), a technology that can look at plastics and rapidly tell us what they are. Some top-of-the-line recycling facilities already use lights or cameras that “see” using this approach and sort soda bottles from PVC piping.

But these systems can't sort everything, and the focus of my research is to create a method to help sort the trickiest of plastics in a way that will be profitable for recyclers.

How We’re Making Recycling More Efficient

With that in mind, our team looked at this NIR approach and decided to improve it with some help from machine learning algorithms and other scientific techniques.

In infrared spectroscopy, you shine light from several different wavelengths on some molecules. Those molecules absorb some of the energy from that light based on the wavelength and reflect or transmit the rest.

One way to think about it is with flowers and color. When the many wavelengths of light in sunlight shine on a red rose, for example, the rose is excellent at absorbing every wavelength/color except for red. The red light reflects off the petals, and that is why roses look red to us.

If we know what colors and light intensity we are shining on a flower or plastic bottle and what colors/intensity we get back, we can use the difference like a fingerprint to identify more of those flowers or bottles.

Using machine learning, we can find the NIR fingerprints for many plastic materials. We then “train” the computer to identify the plastic based on how similar the new NIR signal is to the NIR signals of other plastics. This training helps the technology identify the material in a soda bottle, know that it’s different from the makeup of a takeout container, and separate them accordingly.

In our first paper , we used machine learning to connect our plastic signals with certain properties, like how dense and crystalline the polyethylene was. Normally, you measure density by weighing the plastic in different liquids and comparing the difference. It’s a very slow and tedious process.

However, we show that you can use reflected light to find out almost the same information — much more quickly. And on the recycling line, time is of the essence.

You can apply this approach to both large and small samples, too. It’s cool because it demonstrates that we can pull a lot more information out of these light-based measurements if we set things up carefully.

This is still very preliminary work and doesn’t yet apply to all types of plastics. So, it’s not like we can shine a light on any plastic and know its exact characteristics, but it’s an exciting start. It could save both recyclers and manufacturers a lot of time and effort with quality control steps if we can scale it up.

With that work published, I’ve been digging into the best ways to handle all the data we get from these measurements. You end up having very different-looking data based on the shape of the plastic, whether the sample is in pellets, a powder or a bottle.

This is because the light still gets reflected, but it gets reflected in different directions depending on the shape of the plastic. Think of the reflection on a clear pond versus on a pond with many ripples. Then, you can add colors and preservatives that have the potential to really change the signal. It doesn’t make the data wrong, but it can influence the sorting. Think of it as the difference between sorting black-and-white photographs of people and sorting black-and-white photographs, color photographs, caricatures and paintings of those same people.

To combat this, the team has been trying to expand our dataset, while I look at mathematical corrections to put powders, pellets and colored plastics on the same playing field. If we can accomplish that, it will become significantly easier to use machine learning to identify which plastic is which.

To make this research more broadly useful, I’m working to show that we can sort those troublesome polyolefins. With my current methods, we are achieving 95% to 98% accuracy when sorting these plastics. We’re doing this with a process that almost any NIR-equipped recycling facility could start using very rapidly if it wanted to.

Many recycling facilities are probably already using similar algorithms, but this work provides an extra level of refinement that really focuses on the tough-to-sort polyolefins.

If we can sort those effectively, we can reuse them with fewer processing problems, and recycling will become much more profitable. Then, hopefully, the profits can drive even better recycling habits, and we can start bending our linear economy into a circular one.

Recycling as a Puzzle to Solve

I’m a problem solver, and I hop from one puzzle to the next.

In addition to polymer research, I’ve worked on drug delivery systems for ovarian cancer, and now I’m working with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

I love the good that I get to do while solving complex puzzles. Sustainability and bio-friendly materials have been a nice thread throughout my research career.

You may not initially realize the connection between biomedical research and plastics. But drug delivery systems can help make really cool materials with applications outside the medical space. The plastics work can also enhance our understanding of our bodies in areas such as DNA, proteins and collagen.

And now, with the explosion of AI, we have new tools to conduct materials research faster and more effectively. It’s a very exciting time to be in this sustainable materials space!

Future of Sorting Research

I’m currently finishing up my two-year contract at NIST, and I’m looking for the next puzzle to solve.

However, I plan to stay connected to NIST as an associate to help other researchers use my techniques.

I hope to help the greater recycling community use data analysis to improve our recycling and help clean up our planet.
