Star Trek : The Graphic Novel Collection Eaglemoss Hardcover

Celebrating 50 Years of Classic Star Trek Graphic Novels. With this collection you can revisit all the classic characters and incredible art from the STAR TREK comic archives. Every edition has a specially-commissioned introduction to provide context to the story. Every book contains a number of collected comics and a bonus reprint of one of the comic archive's classic stories. The books were available via partwork subscription or individually in the UK, Australia, the US, and other countries. Subscriptions included an assortment of bonus collectible items and books. Eaglemoss published 140 numbered, six Special, and four Upsell volumes of Star Trek comics. When lined up on a shelf, the spines of each numbered volume form a mosaic . See Wikipedia for information on partwork publications .

Rich Handley, editor of the Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection, published an index of the Star Trek comics reprinted in Volume 140. The index is reproduced here as well.

Star Trek: Graphic Novel Collection Vol. 1 - Countdown HC

  • Contributions Submit Corrections Submit New Variant Cover Contribution History

Countdown ---------------- Years have passed since STAR TREK: NEMESIS, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E battled the dictator Shinzon and his army of Remans. The battle cost the life of Picard's trusted colleague and friend, the android Data, and set many of Picard's crew on paths away from the Enterprise.

On the planet Ronulus, the elderly Ambassador Spock attempts to reunite the Vulcans and Romulans through compassion and learning. With the public blessing of the Romulan Senate, Spock's words have spread far and wide; but his discovery of a dangerous stellar phenomenon growing in the Hobus star system throws those plans into disarray. A supernova capable of wiping out countless worlds is on the verge of detonation - and Romulus will be the first to perish.

But when Spock's petition to fuse rare Romulan resources with top secret Vulcan technology is met with suspicion and disbelief, he must gather together old friends and new allies - including an impulsive mining ship captain named Nero - for a mission against impossible odds.

The Planet of No Return ------------------------------- We find the Starship Enterprise surveying the planet K-G only to fall victim to a 'space mist' that turns animal life into violent, mobile plants! Captain Kirk, Doctor McCoy and Yeoman Rand discover an entire ecosystem with hostile plant life at the top of the food chain and people at the bottom while Spock stays on the ship.

Eaglemoss has a firm tradition of respecting the Star Trek franchise, and in partnership with another organization with the same value are reprinting a choice collection of IDW Publishing’s original, high-quality Trek graphic novels – but are also reaching in to the Trek comic archives for the classic UK newspaper comics, the Marvel Comics  Trek line, and more in the coming months.

When you have a partnership of like-minded purposes, can there be anything wrong?

Volume One in this hardcover collection is  Countdown , the four-issue series from IDW that was originally published in early 2009 as a lead-up to the first Kelvin Timeline Star Trek film – a much-needed prequel that clarifies both Spock Prime and Nero’s backstory (before they crashed into the alternate reality seen in the film).

Creatively written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones , this is a book that embraces the origin point of the break between the two timelines that is the commonality that all true Trek fans need to remember.

What I enjoyed about this story was that it set the scene for the  2009 film in a way that allows Prime Timeline fans to better appreciate the new universe. Set about eight years after Star Trek: Nemesis , this story sees the original crew of the Enterprise-E in different roles.

Chief Engineer Geordi LaForge is now a starship designer, Captain Picard is now The Federation Ambassador to Vulcan, and Data has survived his explosive death aboard Shinzon’s warship and has taken command of the  Enterprise (now living in the former body of his android progenitor, B-4).

Ambassador Spock has been living with the Romulans for the past twenty years, and has become of aware of a grave threat to the Romulan Empire in the form of an unstable star. The basic plan is to use the mining vessel, the Narada (under the command of Captain Nero), to search for the mineral Decalithium, and transport it to Vulcan — and change it into red matter for the purpose of stabilizing the Hobus star.

(Of course, the further explanation of this noble cause would have been extremely useful in setting up the premise for the Abrams film.)

We meet a more relatable Nero in this series; a Romulan who understands Ambassador Spock’s plan in trying to save the the Romulan Empire. In this series, he is an ally and we learn more about the transfiguration to the vengeful villain we see in the 2009 film. Nero is more comprehensible and is actually more heroic and sympathetic.

We also get to see more of the Enterprise-E  crew. I was particularly entertained by the notion of Geordi LaForge designing Spock’s enigmatic one-man ship from the film, dubbed the “Jellyfish.”  It’s these links back to the classic timeline that bridges the gap between classic and the new cinematic Trek .

For the first pick for its series of reprinted graphic novels, Eaglemoss has made an excellent choice with Countdown . Eaglemoss is widely respected for its miniatures and supplemental literature to support those models, and this wonderful story choice reflects a unifying force between both classic and new Trek fandoms.

Of course, with the fact that Countdown sold out within two weeks of its publication, according to IDW’s editor, Chris Ryall, this is clearly an excellent choice for Eaglemoss to reprint. It’s a fond memory and must-have for those fans who originally purchased it and is an excellent starting point for new readers eager to begin a new library of comic Trek.

The additional bonus to this book is the Dick Wood story, Planet of No Return , originally published by Gold Key Comics back in the late 1960’s. Gold Key is famous for giving its creators very little data of the original show to work with, which resulted in many apocryphal and sometimes contradictory canonical details appearing in the comic.

For example, the Enterprise  often was shown with chemical propulsive effects or erroneous terminology for equipment, like the transporter room referred to as the “teleportation chamber” or phasers termed as “lasers.” While the story is obviously dated, it’s a nostalgic throwback that’s a lot of fun for long-time fans to remember and appreciate.

In terms of format, the hardcover is the perfect way to go. Not only does it encapsulate all four issues of this series in a rigorous format, but it is also a convenient purchase and the numbering makes it easier for collectors who like a numbered series on their shelves.

In terms of size, the pages are somewhat smaller, measure about 10 by 6.5 inches. While one would expect there to be an effect on the rendering of the art, I honestly couldn’t see any sacrifice of image quality in the reduced pages, which must come as a relief to artist David Messina and his solid work in this series.

In short, this is a great opening salvo for Eaglemoss’s entry into Trek graphic novel hardcovers. It’s a fan-favourite story that expands the background of the 2009 film and provides more insight into the characters and more understanding behind the film. This is a perfect story for a reprint and also begins a new Eaglemoss tradition or providing quality content in a new medium for this respected Star Trek licensee.

Now I feel the urge to buy a miniature Enterprise-E.

Released fortnightly until issue 65 and weekly thereafter, the series gathered many key moments from Star Trek ' s comic book history into hardcover volumes.

Eaglemoss/Hero Collector ' Ben Robinson oversaw the publication as editorial manager, Réka Turcsányi and Rich Handley were its editors, Maggie Calmels was editorial director, and Terry Sambridge acted as design editor. Designers Ryan Cummings, Ross Jackson, Paul Montague, Steve Scanlan, and Jason Et; Tamara Dingsdale also contributed to the project.

The series encompassed a wide range of content and included Gold Key 's first Star Trek comic books that were initially published in 1967 , the British comic strips, and comic books from DC , IDW , Malibu , Marvel , Paramount , Tokyopop , and WildStorm . Movie adaptations were also covered in the series.

Comics gurus Bob Greenberger , Rich Handley, and James Swallow authored the introductory articles that prefaced each volume. Commencing with issue 72, Handley assumed editorship of the publication and authorship of these articles. [1]

Once combined, the spines of the full set of volumes formed a graphic of a fleet of starships , as seen in the image to the right. Many books incorporated the content of a modern Star Trek graphic novel with a classic comic book from the franchise's past, and each measured 175 × 260 mm.

As "Special Editions", the collection produced stand-alone "Crossover" volumes where Star Trek teamed up with another entertainment franchise in a comic series, such as Doctor Who and Planet of the Apes . Also released as Special Editions, a number of limited-run comic series were collected here as "Miniseries" compilations.

Photonovels and decorative novelty gifts were also produced for the collection.

In May 2020 , Rich Handley announced that the partwork would be extended from 120 to 140 (regular) issues, and stated that if sales targets were reached, an extension to 160 issues was possible, providing space for the completion of all of the comics series offered within the collection. [2]

Ben Robinson indicated in October 2020 that sales of the last tranche of issues had not been strong enough to warrant a further extension, and stated that the line would conclude with the publication of issue 140. [3]

Handley added, " Within these 150 books, we've reprinted every story from Gold Key, the British strips, Peter Pan, the L.A. Times Syndicate, Marvel, Brazil's Editora Abril, Malibu, WildStorm, and Tokyopop, as well as numerous rarities and unpublished works along the way. But for DC and IDW, there's more to offer, and I wish we'd been able to bring you every single Trek comic from 1967 to the present (those not featuring X-Men, at least). We got pretty darn close! " [4]

Later, artists Jason and Tamara Dingsdale provided details and cover images of their unofficial fan-made versions of the cancelled books (volumes 141 to 160, Special Editions 7 to 10, and photonovel 5) to Wixiban.com, a noted Star Trek collectibles site. These twenty editions, however, were not based on Handley's plans for the series and were not authorized by Eaglemoss, Paramount, or CBS. [5]

Kirsten Beyer is a bestselling author of fantasy and science fiction novels best known as the author of the “Star Trek Voyager” novels. Known as the Oracle of the Star Trek universe, she is one author that knows pretty much everything about the books and movies in the fantasy series. Kirsten wrote her debut novel of the “Star Trek: Voyager: String Theory” titled “Fusion” in 2005 and has never looked back since. She has since then penned more than ten titles in the “Star Trek: Voyager: String Theory,” “Alias,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” a young adult series. She has also been actively writing articles for “Star Trek Magazine” over the years. Before she became an author, she was involved in the production of “This Old Planet,” “Johnson over Jordan,” and “Harold Pinter’s The Hothouse” all of which were set in Los Angeles. The latter was called an unmissable piece of work by the L.A. Times. She has also been involved in “Passions,” “General Hospital,” the world Premier of” Quills, and Geffen Playhouse.” Her interest in the arts is not hard to understand given that she went to college where she graduated with a degree in theater arts and English literature. She also attended the University of California and Los Angeles for her master’s in fine arts. She currently lives with her husband and daughter in Los Angeles.

Kirsten got her start in the creative world writing novels in the Voyager series such as “To Lose the Earth,” “The Eternal Side,” and “Full Circle” among others. However, she would later get into writing for television, which is a completely different experience. While in books it can be easy putting the character’s internal thoughts on the page, it is not the same on TV. On television, it is easy to write the basic stories as the hard part is trying to make stories that are powerful and relevant to resonate with the audience. As such, TV for Beyer is all about putting several people in a room and introducing articles to find out how they deal with the changing circumstances. Some of the questions she had to deal with include what are their needs and wants as individuals and groups and how are they working towards achieving those goals or getting in each other’s way. She will often use the idea of the North Star in plotting her stories so that the character journeys will often crisscross and cross each other. While she loved writing novels, she was sure that writing for TV would be an exciting experience and hence she jumped at the chance to write the script for Star Trek Voyager. She started asking herself where to take the Star Trek series and thus sat down and wrote a pith for the new series.

In 2008, Beyer was charged with relaunching the “Voyager” novels as the main author. It was not the first time she had been tapped to write the series, given that she was responsible for writing “Fusion” a Voyager novel. During the run of “Star Trek: Voyager,” she had also written “Distant Shores” an anthology. By 2009, she had written “Full Circle” that was the first novel of the “Star Trek: Voyager” series of novels. She has been the lead novelist and author of the series since then publishing more than ten titles by 2020. In 2016, she was tapped to become a staff writer for “Star Trek: Discovery” and was actively involved in the writing room where she cowrote “Si Vis, Para Bellum” the first episode of the new season. Kirsten Beyer has also been involved in the writing and coordinating of spin-off products such as comics and novels in the Discovery universe. She has been working with Mike Johnson and the two are cowriters of “Star Trek Discovery – Succession,” “Star Trek: Discovery Annual 2018,” and “Star Trek: Discovery – The Light of Kahless.” Another of her biggest contributions to the Star Trek universe was writing and creating “Star Trek: Picard” series.

“Full Circle” by Kirsten Beyer is the story of an American spaceship, the USS Voyager that is sent on a mission to Kerovi a faraway planet. Captain Chakotay and Commander Paris Thomas the first officer have to decide between saving the lives of the people they love the most and following the orders they have been given. B’Elanna Torres and Miral her daughter had disappeared after a brutal attack on Boreth, where the Klingon live. Admiral Kathryn Janeway the former captain of the Voyager alongside several new allies and friends, has been helping the crew who are trying to disentangle an ancient mystery. But in doing so they are placing themselves between two vicious factions who are fighting it out for the Klingon people even as the life of Miral is in jeopardy. But the events and the reverberations from them offer a prelude to looming days of turmoil. The Voyager is drawn into a desperate struggle to stop the destruction of the Federation as bonds that had been made in the Delta Quadrant are tested to the limit and lives are devastated. For even though they have been dealt a devastating blow by destiny, they have to face up to their future and embark on a journey that will take them full circle.

Kirsten Beyer’s “Unworthy” opens to the Borg the greatest threat to humanity in recent times freed and absorbed into the gestalt. But are they really gone given how long they had rained terror over humanity? Since the authorities are not sure if they are truly rid of the Borg, they send a Starfleet to find out if there are any left. The Starship Voyager is the lead vessel that goes ahead of a squadron to explore a region of interstellar space where the inhabitants have been living in terror and fear of annihilation for millennia. In addition to his reconnaissance mission, the captain of the Starship Voyager has to also resolve old enmities and reach out to old friends and allies. Seven of Nine never had the perfection that the Borg enjoyed and hence she was left in limbo when they left as she is neither human nor Borg and is slowly losing her mind. The reassuring murmurs of the Collective have now been substituted with a strange voice that insists that she is Annika Hansen. The former captain of the Voyager offers to help her meet up with ships sent into the Delta Quadrant, which is perhaps where her brethren are headed. It is not a very hospitable part of the Federation and the unexpected and the unknown are the order of the day.

“Children of the Storm” by Kirsten Beyer is about the Children of the Storm of whom little is known. they are a unique breed and potentially most dangerous species that the Federation ever had to deal with. They do not have physical bodies and travel in space through their thoughts and had in one battle managed to destroy thousands of ships crewed by the mighty Borg. The feat had been made all the more spectacular given that they had not fired any of the usual weapons expected to be employed in such a confrontation. The three Federation ships on a mission to Delta Quadrant have just come under attack from the Children of the Storm and Fleet Commander Afsarah Eden and Captain Chakotay need to find out why they have been targeted. They did not provoke the Children and now thousands of lives in the squadron are being threatened by an enemy they know very little about.
