Siya Kolisi is South African Tourism’s New Global Advocate

T t he best of south african excellence:, siya kolisi is south african tourism’s new global advocate.

There is no doubt South Africa’s excellent tourism offering is unmatched. The country boasts diverse and breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, wide open spaces, and a 3000-kilometer coastline with some of the best beaches in the world. But, what really makes South Africa special and so attractive? It is the warm people whose hospitality and excellence have captivated the hearts of many travellers from around the world. In promoting the best of South Africa, earlier tonight South African Tourism revealed, in a moving 90-second video entitled “The Best Of Us”, that South Africa’s rugby captain, Siya Kolisi, is the marketing entities’ new global brand advocate. The world-acclaimed Springbok captain is the first of the advocates who form part of a new global campaign that looks to celebrate the country’s excellence by profiling and partnering with South Africans who are making waves on the global stage in their various fields including sports, arts and culture, academia etc. “With the Rugby World Cup starting in September in France, and as the Springboks prepare for the upcoming tournament, Siya is the perfect person to partner with South African Tourism in our marketing and promotional efforts as we seek to attract more travellers to come to visit our country. He is an exceptional South African whose story and journey inspire people from various parts of the globe. He is a true South African icon,” says Acting Chief Executive Officer at South African Tourism, Nomasonto Ndlovu.

The partnership between Siya and South African Tourism is in collaboration with Roc Nation Sports International, the world-renowned agency that represents Kolisi locally and internationally. Hailing from Zwide, a Township in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province, Siya has captured the hearts of South Africans and the world as captain of the South African rugby team, the Springboks. He captained the South African team at the 2019 International Rugby World Cup in Yokohama, Japan, defeating England 322-12 in the final to lift the Webb Ellis Cup. This was South Africa's third World Cup win, tying with New Zealand, and with that Siya became the first black captain of a World Cup-winning side in the history of the sport. "I’m super excited about this partnership because as a proud advocate for our country, I’ve always spoken about how much I love South Africa, and what a special place it is," Kolisi commented. "I see this partnership as an opportunity to promote the entire tourism sector in South Africa, and I want to be a leading voice in encouraging everyone to come and see the best of what the country, and we as South Africans, have to offer."

Siya’s authentic leadership and worldwide appeal is the compelling reason why South African Tourism has come to walk this journey with him towards inspiring the nation, inspiring the tourism sector, and inspiring travellers. Our year-long collaboration will see Siya represent the country in different capacities as we aim to re-position South Africa locally and in our key source markets internationally. “With the global tourism industry well on its recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, various destinations are showcasing their tourism offerings to attract travellers.  For South Africa we know where our best comes from. It comes from our unique places, our exceptional people and our authentic and rich cultures and way of life,” adds Ndlovu. The tourism industry and media stakeholders gathered at a star-studded event, which kicked off with a nostalgic performance by South African Jazz legend Vusi Mahlasela, who also curated a song specially for “The Best Of Us” reveal. In keeping with the ‘best of us” spirit, the event also featured Grammy award-winning South African musician, Zakes Bantwini, as well as some members of the Springbok team. Before Covid-19, the South African Tourism sector welcomed about 10 million arrivals and contributed 3,7% to GDP. The sector is currently showing great signs of recovery and this campaign will go a long way in inspiring travellers to choose South Africa.

Kolisi acknowledged the struggles faced by many South Africans but said that even in the tough times, positivity should always shine through.

“In all that we do, we must inspire each other. If you have a job you might not enjoy,  just think there is someone who would love to have that opportunity. Do your job as best you can,” he said.

Kolisi is the first of the advocates who will form part of a new global campaign that looks to celebrate the country’s excellence by profiling and partnering with South Africans who are making waves on the global stage in their various fields, including sports, arts and culture, and academia.

South African Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi is the new new global brand advocate for South African Tourism.

She said that as much as they were excited to partner with Kolisi as part of their family they are also realistic in the fact that he is got a huge task ahead of him.

“Siya Kolisi to you as the leader of the most powerful sporting team in the world. We as SA Tourism would like to wish you all the best as we approach this journey,” she said.

Explaining why Kolisi was the perfect fit for the task, she said when he played rugby, he brought about goosebumps  to his audience. Now, the whole world would be intrigued by him and would want to know where he comes from, bolstering the SA brand.

“When they [ask] who are [you]... we want you to attach South Africa and everything else. We want you to help us tell the story of this country in such a way that it makes people want to come here,” she said.

Ndlovu highlighted that welcoming tourists onto SA ground was more than just about them visiting the country. She said tourism was about jobs, the economy and changing the prospects of the country and “actually creating hope which is what your choice of career does when people are watching you.”

Snubbed Springboks hopeful leaves Stormers to join Siya Kolisi in France – report

A cut out of Siya Kolisi featuring the main image of Hacjivah Dayimani.

Hacjivah Dayimani in action for the Stormers in the Champions Cup.

Stormers star back-rower Hacjivah Dayimani will reportedly leave South Africa at the end of the season to join a French Top 14 club.

Dayimani has been a standout for the Stormers since joining John Dobson’s side from the Lions in 2021.

Hacjivah Dayimani signs with Racing 92

The box-office attacking loose forward has featured on the flank and at number eight for the Stormers and was superb in the side’s run to the United Rugby Championship final last season.

He was particularly impactful at number eight when Evan Roos was sidelined for the Cape Town-based side and has continued that form this season.

Despite his fine form, he has been overlooked by the Springboks coaching staff and has yet to be involved in any training squads. More recently, he was not invited to Rassie Erasmus’ alignment camps with the likes of Mpilo Guemede, Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom in attendance.

‘It is my dream to play for the Springboks’ – Juarno Augustus eyes Rassie’s call despite ‘no chats’

However, it has been reported that after his recent international snub, Dayimani is considering his options and looks to have caught the attention of Top 14 giants Racing 92.

Stuart Lancaster has already signed French internationals Romain Taofifenua and Demba Bamba ahead of next season as well as former England captain Owen Farrell.

According to respected French publication L’Equipe , Dayimani is close to signing a two-year deal with an option of a third season in Paris.

The Stormers star could, therefore, link up with Boks captain Siya Kolisi at Racing 92 in what will be a hammer blow to Dobson’s squad despite the confirmed returns of Steven Kitshoff and JD Schickerling ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Dayimani would also link up with Chile’s star Diego Escobar. Racing 92 is in the market for a back-rower, with Wenceslas Lauret retiring and Baptiste Chouzenoux set to join Bayonne.

Bulls sign Sharks playmaker

While the Stormers look set to lose a star player, Jake White’s Bulls have announced their latest recruit, signing Boeta Chamberlain from the Sharks.

Chamberlain has fallen out of favour with the Sharks under John Plumtree this season but will offer the Bulls a handy option at fly-half and full-back next season.

The 25-year-old has an accurate boot and is known for nailing a drop goal or two.

He is the second signing the Bulls have confirmed ahead of the new season, with former Stormers lock/flank and Sale Sharks star Cobus Wiese returning to South Africa to join the Pretoria-based side.

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi in doubt for Rugby World Cup after injury - report

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi is in doubt to lead his country’s Rugby World Cup defence because of a knee injury, according to a report from South Africa.

South Africa’s Independent Newspapers group reported on its website that Kolisi sustained a partial tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee playing for his Durban-based Sharks against Ireland’s Munster on Saturday.

Kolisi has seen two specialists, one of whom has recommended surgery, Independent Newspapers said. The report said Kolisi would consult a third specialist on Tuesday.

The Sharks said Kolisi was consulting doctors over the injury but have not released a prognosis.

Kolisi was injured in the opening minutes of the Sharks’ 22-22 draw with Munster in the United Rugby Championship. He attempted to play on but was replaced after eight minutes.

If Kolisi has surgery, the recovery time is typically nine months, Independent Newspapers said, ruling the flanker out of the Springboks’ title defence in France. The World Cup starts on September 8.

Kolisi could avoid surgery and opt for rehabilitation, but that would still keep him out of action for at least four months and in a best-case scenario he’d return to action only a few weeks before the World Cup, the report said.

Kolisi was South Africa’s captain when they won the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan to equal the All Blacks’ record of three titles. This World Cup is expected to be the last for the 31-year-old loose forward, who will join French club Racing 92 after the rugby showpiece.

Before the World Cup, South Africa play tests against Australia, New Zealand and Argentina in a shortened Rugby Championship in July.

The Springboks open the Rugby World Cup against Scotland on September 10 and also play top-ranked Ireland, Romania and Tonga in Pool B.

Rassie Erasmus’ three-man shortlist to fill Siya Kolisi’s Springboks captaincy void

S pringboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has three players on his shortlist to captain South Africa against Wales in the one-off Test match at Twickenham Stadium.

The fixture on June 22 falls outside of World Rugby’s official international window, meaning players plying their trade for Top 14 and Premiership clubs will not be available to Erasmus.

South Africa will therefore be without double World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi – whose future as the side’s skipper is also in doubt.

Leicester Tigers fly-half Handre Pollard, who captained the Springboks against Wales in 2022, is also unavailable for the Test match which has led Erasmus to other options.

Springboks captaincy is not a headache

According to a report by Afrikaans newspaper Rapport , Erasmus will choose between Sharks forwards Eben Etzebeth and Bongi Mbonambi and Japan-based flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit.

The trio have all captained the Springboks in the past and could do so again in the one-off Test against Wales, with Kolisi possibly leading the side again in the two matches against Ireland back in South Africa.

Etzebeth, Mbonambi and Du Toit are all set to be available to the Springboks for the clash as the Sharks are out of the running for the URC play-offs while the Japan-based players will link up with the squad early.

Springboks superstars spark Sharks’ stunning fightback over Clermont in Challenge Cup semi-final

“The captaincy is not this massive problem,” Erasmus told media at North-West University on Thursday after picking up his honorary doctorate.

“We really have got a lot of leaders and as I always say at the previous press conference as well, if a guy like Siya gets released by his club at the right times and we have good enough access to him almost the same as the South African guys, then there is no need to change captaincy.

“At this stage, their coach at Racing 92 (Stuart Lancaster), is really working with us really well. So, at this stage, it doesn’t really look like we have to make a change there.

“But I mean, let’s see when their season ends and our season ends and players become available, but it’s not a headache for us.”

‘Definitely the best’ – Andre Esterhuizen ranks Marcus Smith ahead of Springboks teammates

Will Kolisi return to South Africa?

The report adds that several top SA Rugby administrators believe that it would be better for the Springboks if Kolisi played in South Africa due to his unifying efforts and his value off the pitch.

However, a top source in SA Rugby told the newspaper that the union “cannot afford” to buy Kolisi out of his contract at Racing 92.

SA Rugby celebrates stellar night at SA Sports Awards

sa tourism siya kolisi

The South African Rugby Union thanked the judges and the South African public on Monday after a record-breaking night at the SA Sports Awards at the Sun City Superbowl.

Rugby was honoured in eight categories, collecting the awards for Federation, Administrator, Team, Coach, Sportsman, Newcomer, Sports Star, and People’s Choice winner, with Springbok captain Siya Kolisi collecting the latter two awards.

The eight awards exceeded rugby’s previous best showing (five awards in 2022) and are believed to be the most collected by a single sport in the history of the 17-year-old awards.

“We are greatly appreciative of the honours bestowed on our sport by the judges and the people of South Africa,” said SA Rugby CEO, Rian Oberholzer, who was in attendance to collect the Federation of the Year Award on behalf of rugby.

“Rugby has worked hard over a long period to reach this point and we are now fortunate to be enjoying a golden age, and these awards are a reward for all that hard work, dedication and passion that are daily poured into the sport at every level – from the school fields to the provincial unions and of course at the Springbok level.

“These trophies are collected by individuals on the night, but I hope that everyone involved in rugby knows that these are their awards as well. It is a happy and humbling occasion for our sport.”

THE FULL LIST:

Federation of the Year - SA Rugby

Sports Administrator of the Year - Mark Alexander (SA Rugby president)

Team of the Year - Springboks

Newcomer of the Year – Manie Libbok

Coach of the Year - Jacques Nienaber

Sportsman of the Year - Eben Etzebeth

People’s Choice Award - Siya Kolisi

Sports Star of the Year – Siya Kolisi

The awards covered the period from 1 September 2022 to 31 December 2023, during which time the Springboks won a second successive Rugby World Cup.

That achievement was recognised with the Boks being named as SA’s Team of the Year once again and Jacques Nienaber chosen as Coach of the Year. Talismanic lock Eben Etzebeth was honoured as Sportsman of the Year but was pipped in the Sports Star of the Year category by captain and close friend, Siya Kolisi.

POPULAR KOLISI

Kolisi was also named as People’s Choice winner – decided by public vote – for the second time.

Flyhalf Manie Libbok was selected as the Newcomer of the Year while union president, Mr Mark Alexander, was honoured as Administrator of the Year after eight years as the head of the organisation during which time the Springboks have twice won the Rugby World Cup.

SA’s leading women’s referee Aimee Barrett-Theron was also recognised for her achievements by being nominated in the Technical Officer of the Year category, which was won by hockey umpire Sean Rapaport.

“Siya, Eben and Manie richly deserve their awards, but I know they will be the first to say that they could not have achieved what they have without their teammates, their coaches and the people who have made sacrifices to help them on their way,” said Oberholzer. “In the same way the coach of the year award is a tribute to the entire Springbok coaching team.

“Rugby is very lucky to have such ambassadors and role models among its players and leaders and they deserve all the plaudits they receive.”

Mr Alexander added his thanks to the rugby community: “This is a proud day for rugby, and I’d like to thank my colleagues on the executive council for their support and hard work over the years that has allowed rugby to reach this point.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the millions of South Africans who supported our team throughout their World Cup campaign in 2023. Your enthusiasm and encouragement have been invaluable to us.

“We have had to endure some very tough times on and off the field and we can never relax our vigilance, but these awards are a tribute to everyone engaged in the sport, wherever they are in the country.”

SPRINGBOK CAPTAIN PERFECT PERSON TO PROMOTE SA

“With the Rugby World Cup starting in September in France, and as the Springboks prepare for the upcoming tournament, Siya is the perfect person to partner with South African Tourism in our marketing and promotional efforts as we seek to attract more travellers to come visit our country.

This was South Africa’s third World Cup win, tying with New Zealand, and with that Siya became the first black captain of a World Cup-winning side in the history of the sport.
