How we rated the currency exchange shops in Halifax
We've taken into account the Google ratings at the time of research, looking at exchange services in popular Halifax areas. As ratings are dynamic, and things change all the time, you’ll want to also do your own research before you head out to exchange your money.
How to exchange currency in Halifax
Depending on your needs and preferences, you may want to choose between banks, currency exchange shops and online platforms to exchange currency conveniently in Halifax. It’s worth noting that to keep customers safe, and to comply with the law, it’s common for exchange services to ask for ID when you buy foreign currency. Get ready by having your photo ID, such as a passport or driving license, with you when you arrange your exchange.
If you’re planning on exchanging currency with a bank, you’ll need to double check the travel money and exchange options available. Many banks only offer exchange to customers who already have an account - plus you might have to order online in advance, particularly if you’re looking for a more exotic currency. If your local bank offers currency exchange to people who aren’t customers, bear in mind that you’ll need to take an ID document along with you to collect your cash.
To exchange currency in Halifax using a bank:
- Check that the bank you've picked offers currency exchange
- Make sure the currency you need is available - you may need to order ahead
- Visit a branch with cash, or order online, depending on the bank's process
- Take your travel money instantly, or collect in branch later - remember your ID document if you're not a customer
As an alternative you could choose to visit a currency exchange service or travel money specialist which offers online or on the spot exchange. Currency specialists usually have a very good selection of foreign currencies available, although smaller branches may not hold everything in stock at one time. It’s also useful to know that the exchange rate you get for an on the spot exchange in a store may be different to the one you’ll get when ordering online for collection - usually online orders get a better rate.
To exchange currency in Halifax using a currency exchange service:
- Decide if you'll visit a currency exchange store in person to exchange, or order ahead
- Place your order online and pay by card or with BPAY, or visit a branch with cash
- Take your travel money instantly, or collect in branch later - you'll need to take along your ID document when you visit the branch to place a collect your order
Finally, you might choose to order your travel money online. There are a few ways to do this. Some providers will let you order online and either have the cash delivered to home, or you can collect at a branch or in the airport. Other options offer a travel money card which you can order online, top up, and then use for spending and withdrawals while you’re away. This can be an especially convenient option as it’s often possible to complete the whole process without needing to leave home.
To exchange currency in Halifax online:
- Choose an online currency exchange service which suits your needs
- Order your travel money or travel money card, following their specific process
- You'll normally need to upload an image of your photo ID document for verification
- Your money or card can be delivered to home or collected, depending on the provider you pick
Things to look at before exchanging money
Before you decide how to exchange money it’s worth shopping around to compare a few different available options. That can mean your money goes further. Here are a few more important tips:
Avoid airport currency exchanges
Airports often have currency exchange services - but they’re not usually good value. Services at the airport know that customers have few options left, which means they can crank up the costs. You may not see any fee displayed, but there are likely to be charges rolled into the exchange rate used to convert your dollars to the currency you need, which can be very high.
Check the mid-market rate
Not sure what a good rate looks like? Check the mid-market rate for your specific currency. The mid-market rate is the one used on global markets, and when banks buy and sell currencies. However, it’s not usually passed on to customers. Instead extra fees are added - a markup, margin, or spread. Compare the rate you’re being offered to the mid-market rate for your currency - which you can get from Google - to see this.
Beware of ATM rates
If an ATM in a foreign country asks if you’d prefer to pay in dollars, say no. If you agree, the ATM will manage the currency conversion for you - and that ATM will not give you as good a rate as the one your bank or card network offers. Pay at ATMs and with merchants using the local currency wherever you are, to avoid this.
Get a travel money card from Wise
Travel money cards can help you avoid costs and hassle when exchanging money. Order a card online, add a balance in dollars, and either convert to the currency you need in advance or at the point of payment. Providers like Wise support 40+ currencies for holding and exchange, and often use better exchange rates and lower fees compared to physical currency exchange stores.
Factors to consider when choosing an exchange provider in Halifax
Before you pick the right Halifax currency exchange option for your needs, do a little shopping around. Compare the available options, looking at the costs involved, how safe they are, and what customers say about them.
When considering costs make sure you check both the exchange rate and the fees charged. It's common for services to state there's no commission, when the costs have simply been added into the exchange rate being used.
Double check safety by picking a reputable and licensed provider. If you're exchanging money at a major bank you can rest assured it's licensed. If you're using physical currency exchange stores it's worth asking how they're regulated - and with online providers you can usually find everything you need in a footnote on the website, including licensing details.
Finally, ask around for personal recommendations from friends and family in Halifax, and use online resources like Google reviews and Trustpilot to make sure previous customers are positive about any service you might pick.
Best foreign currency exchange rates in Halifax
Exchange rates can be confusing. It can often seem like every bank, exchange store or online service has their own rate - and choosing can feel daunting.
The key to getting the best currency exchange rate in Halifax is to understand the mid-market exchange rate for your currency pair. The mid-market rate is the rate used when trading on global markets - the one banks and currency exchanges get when they buy or sell currencies themselves. However, providers usually don't pass on this rate to customers - they'll add a percentage markup or margin, which is a fee, to the rate offered to retail customers buying or selling relatively small amounts of currencies.
You can take the mid-market rate for your currency as a good benchmark when measuring up your options for currency exchange in Halifax. Find the mid-market rate on Google, and then look for a provider which offers this or as close as possible to it.
Another good bet is to pick a travel money card from a service like Wise which offers currency exchange which uses live mid-market rates, with the fees split out for clarity and transparency.
When is the best time to exchange currency
Exchange rates change a lot, based on the demand in global markets. That means that there's no best time for currency exchange, but tracking the market can certainly help you spot a good deal when one becomes available.
Keep an eye on the mid-market rate for your currency, using any of our handy tools, and watch how it's changing over time. It's also possible to set up rate alerts online which can help you learn when a rate hits the level you're looking for. If you're planning on converting cash - or if you have a travel money card - you can lock in the rate by buying your foreign currency at that point.
No matter how good a deal you think you're getting, be sure you're picking a safe and reputable provider for your exchange. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
Tips for finding the best currency exchange rates in Halifax
Here are a few final ideas on how to find the best exchange rates in Halifax, no matter which currency you need to buy:
- Compare the available rates across different providers close to you and online - and be sure to check for any additional fees or commissions which can push up costs significantly
- Use online currency converters or mobile apps to stay updated on the current exchange rates for your currency pair, and buy when the time's right
- Consider using an online alternative such as Wise or https://revolut.ngih.net/c/2840549/1765204/9626(https://revolut.ngih.net/c/2840549/1765204/9626?subid1=exiap-ca&subid2=guides&subid3=guides%2Fcurrency_exchanges_best_in_halifax_nova_scotia ) so you can instantly convert currencies using just your phone, wherever you're ready
Why buy foreign currency in Halifax?
Getting your foreign currency in Halifax may offer a better deal compared to buying it from the airport or in your destination country. Airport exchange services know they have a captive audience and can add in extra fees and exchange rate hikes, pushing up the price you pay. Here are a few good reasons to exchange your currency in Halifax:
- As you have time to shop around, you may find you can get better exchange rates
- Buying currency close to home (or even without leaving home) offers speed and convenience
- It's far easier to check the safety and reputation of a provider you know, rather than picking one at your destination
- You won't need to waste your holiday standing in line in a currency exchange store - you can get on with your trip instead
There are a few different ways you might want to currency in Halifax. You could head to a bank, choose a physical currency exchange service, or go for an online option.
There are also some great travel money cards from providers like Wise and Revolut which allow you to order a card online or in an app, top up remotely, and spend or make withdrawals overseas easily. Travel money cards are secure and often offer better exchange rates and lower overall costs compared to switching currency at the airport or in a physical location in your destination.
Use this guide to figure out which currency exchange in Halifax might be best for you, and don't forget to also take a look at travel money cards to see if popping one in your wallet can help you save.
FAQ - Best places to exchange currency in Halifax
There's not one single best place to exchange currency for travel, but converting your currency online before you head off can save time - and often money. One convenient option is to get a travel money card from a provider like Wise or Revolut, to add and exchange money with just your phone.
The cheapest way to get foreign currency in Halifax will depend on the currency you need and the value you want to exchange. This guide gives some good pointers to locations you may want to compare, but shopping around is still essential. Compare the exchange services in Halifax with online and digital services to get the best deal overall.
Exchanging cash on arrival is inconvenient and can leave you vulnerable to scams and unscrupulous money changing services in your destination. You can exchange money before you go conveniently - or get a travel money card which you can top up digitally and use for spending and withdrawals when you're away, often with great rates and low fees.
Yes. If you get a bad exchange rate - or high commission costs - you'll end up with less money in the end for your trip. Before you exchange money, shop around and compare both on and offline options to make sure you get a good deal without excessive fees.
Banks and currency exchange stores can exchange your foreign currency back to Canadian Dollar - but the rate is unlikely to be as good as it was when you converted in the first place, which means you get less back than you spent. Instead, consider a travel money card like the Wise card which lets you leave your money in dollars and convert on the spot when you make a payment or withdrawal overseas.

What is the Halifax Exchange Rate in 2023?
The most important thing to note as a Halifax customer is that their exchange rates are always weaker than the real mid-market rate . This is also known as the spread. Exchange rate margins are used by Halifax to cover their costs and make a profit.
We recorded the Halifax exchange rate on their website from the British Pound to the Euro at 9:25 on 14 September 2023 . For example, if you had exchanged £1,000 at the mid-market rate, you would have gotten around €1,162. With Halifax, you get only €1,121.
- Real Mid-Market Exchange Rate: £1 = 1.162 EUR
- Halifax Exchange Rate: £1 = 1.1213 EUR
Due to the hidden exchange rate margin fee in this example, you would lose £41 to Halifax if you exchanged £1,000 for Euros:
- Hidden Exchange Rate Margin Fee: £41
While mid-market exchange rates are subject to fluctuate constantly from second to second, be aware that the Halifax exchange rate will fluctuate along with it at a weaker rate.
Compare the Halifax Exchange Rate in 2023
In the graph below, we compare several travel money exchangers across the UK. See how Halifax's rates compare against other providers.
You'll notice that many providers advertise themselves as commission-free. However, commissions are not the only important factor to take into account when finding the best deal. The hidden exchange rate margin, card surcharges, and cash delivery fees will all affect how much currency you'll receive at the end of the transaction.
The hidden exchange rate margin fee that we recorded below is not guaranteed. However, we calculated the margin and by recording both the real mid-market exchange rate and the provider's exchange rates at the same time, at 9:25 CEST on September 14th, 2023. In this comparison test, we requested a £1,000 conversion into Euros at each provider:

Factors That Affect Halifax Exchange Rates
Exchange rates are influenced by a variety of complex factors, including inflation, interest rates, international trade flows, government intervention, and much more. The unpredictability of exchange rate fluctuations is due in large part to the combined influence that all of these factors have at once on the value of a given currency.
In regards to foreign exchange for travel money, customers should take heed on one crucial fact: bureau de change and providers like Halifax will often automate their exchange rates so that they fluctuates in sync with the market, but at a weaker rate.
Before you exchange your British pounds for Euros, US Dollars, or any other currency for your travels, make sure to compare Halifax's exchange rate to the real mid-market rate.
Get the Best Exchange Rates with Halifax Alternatives
With the introduction of travel debit cards and the development of multi-currency accounts , there are now limited benefits to getting travel currency in the UK through a travel money provider (such as those found on platforms like MoneySuperMarket).
Traditionally, getting physical bills of foreign cash from a travel money exchange in the UK served as a convenient option before your journey. Nevertheless, it has become significantly more cost-effective to simply withdraw cash at an ATM during your overseas trip. Additionally, the majority of retailers and merchants abroad now readily accept card payments. Moreover, there are travel cards available that exempt you from foreign transaction fees . Their virtual cards also reduce the risks associated with carrying substantial amounts of cash while traveling.
In the following list, we will compare three companies for getting travel currency while in the UK . Let's explore these options:
Revolut is our top choice for travel money in the UK because it charges zero fees for first £1,000 per month that you exchange (only on weekdays, since weekend surcharges apply). The platform works entirely by desktop or smartphone, and they send you a debit card to access your travel money. After the fair usage limit, Revolut charges 1% of the total for Standard plan customers.
What's just as impressive is Revolut's exchange rate fees. While markups vary by currency and increase on the weekends, the average margin is a minuscule 0.2%. For euros (€), the most popular currency used for travel money in the UK, Revolut sometimes applies an exchange rate that is actually stronger than the European Central Bank's mid-market rate. While not guaranteed, this means you can gain when you exchange your GBP to EUR for your next holiday in the Eurozone.
You can use Revolut's debit card to use at ATMs for local cash. As a Standard customer, you'd get £200 per month of fee-free withdrawals, though third-party ATM withdrawal fees may still apply.

Starling Bank stands out as one of the premier debit cards for international travel for customers in the UK, thanks to its absence of foreign transaction fees. If you solely have their GBP account, your Starling Bank card will apply the live exchange rate used by MasterCard, which closely aligns with the mid-market exchange rate.
Starling Bank also provides EUR accounts for no additional cost, making it an ideal choice for traveling to countries that accept euros. In such instances, your Starling Bank debit card will access these account balances, allowing it to be recognised as a local Eurozone card.
One of the most compelling features of Starling Bank is its complete exemption from ATM fees, both domestically and internationally. Irrespective of the amount of cash withdrawn or the frequency of withdrawals, Starling Bank never imposes any fees for ATM transactions. While third-party fees may still apply, as determined by the ATM owner, this travel benefit solidifies Starling Bank's position as the top debit card for international travel for UK residents and citizens.

Wise Account
The power of the Wise multi-currency account comes from never charging hidden exchange rate margin fees . No matter which foreign currency you want, Wise will always apply the real mid-market exchange rate to your British pounds. Instead, it charges a transparent service fee that ranges from 0.3% to around 2% depending on the currency.
The Wise account lets you exchange, hold, and spend over 50 foreign currencies with its debit card. It even comes with checking account details for 10 countries, including a UK sort code, US account number, EU IBAN, and more. This means you can receive money locally from those countries with direct debits, SEPA payments, and other methods.
For holiday cash, you can use the Wise debit card for 2 free ATM withdrawals for a total of £200 per month.

Halifax travel money exchange rates compared
We logged into Halifax to compare their travel money exchange rates against the competition
Updated: 30 May 2022
Most currency suppliers publish their travel money exchange rates online for all to see, but some high street banks such as The Halifax only make their exchange rates available to customers who are logged into their online account. Naughty Halifax!
I'm not a fan of companies hiding their exchange rates; it makes it difficult to know how competitive their currency deals are, and in my experience if a company chooses not to publish their exchange rates it's usually because their rates are pretty awful.
So, in the interests of science, I've done the work for you and compared Halifax's exchange rates for some of the most popular currencies ordered in the UK.
This isn't as good as getting real, live exchange rates from The Halifax, but it gives you a rough idea of where they stand against the competition. The rates below are a snapshot of how competitive Halifax's travel money deals were compared to the best and the worst rates available online at the time.
Data compiled at 19:55 on 30 May 2022. Best online rates were those available on CompareHolidayMoney.com at the time of writing.
Halifax rates are 7.2% lower on average
The results show that on average The Halifax exchange rates were 7.2% worse than the best rates available online at the time. The difference was smaller for euros and US dollars and larger for the more exotic currencies like Croatian kuna and Turkish lira.
In real terms, if you were buying £1000 worth of euros, you'd get €41 more by going with the best online rate compared to if you had ordered with The Halifax.
You might think it's a bit unfair to compare The Halifax's exchange rates with those available online at the time but it doesn't make a difference - you can order travel money online through Halifax (if you're a Halifax account holder) and you'll get exactly the same rate that you would have if you ordered over the counter in a Halifax branch.
As an aside, the worst online exchange rates were all from other UK high street banks; notably Barclays and Santander (who do publish their exchange rates online).
The obvious conclusion from this is banks offer some of the worst exchange rates in the UK so if you can buy your currency literally anywhere else, you'll probably get a better deal.
Where to get the best exchange rates
Unsurprisingly, the best exchange rates can always be found online. For high street currency providers including supermarkets and the Post Office, you'll usually get a better deal if you order online via their website instead of walking in off the street.
To find the very best currency deals available in the UK right now, use our free comparison tool to see who is offering today's best exchange rates .

Traffic woes: Halifax plans to re-evaluate roadways and flow amidst population spike
If you get Global News from Instagram or Facebook - that will be changing. Find out how you can still connect with us .
A major collision involving the driver of a truck careening off an overpass in Halifax and onto a highway is highlighting the municipality’s weak spots when it comes to traffic and roadways.
There were no major injuries in Thursday afternoon’s crash. But it did leave parts of Highway 102 and 101 closed for hours near Lower Sackville.
“I think it shows where all the pinch points are and the fact that a major corridor or a major highway like the 102, if that is shut down, then all of the side roads are going to take that traffic,” said District 14 Coun. Lisa Blackburn, who represents the area. “And those are side roads that are not built to take that level of traffic.”
Blackburn herself was caught up in Thursday’s gridlock. She says, however, that collisions aren’t the only reason for congestion.
Summer construction is now in full effect. In addition, Halifax Regional Municipality’s population continues to grow, which means more vehicles on the road.
“We definitely realize that there’s going to be an infrastructure crunch. We can’t have this many people settling in our city and not have to adjust our infrastructure accordingly,” said Blackburn. “But that’s going to take all levels of government, all orders of government to do that, because HRM alone does not have the money to build connector roads or build new highways.”

And that’s where the provinces comes in. Megan Couture with the Joint Regional Transportation Agency — a provincial organization — says changes have to be made because government has set “some pretty aggressive population growth targets.”
“We are going to need additional infrastructure to do that to support the transportation system as we grow,” said Couture.
The agency exists to address the transportation issue in HRM by developing a regional transportation plan, which is expected to be complete in November.
“There are constraints, right? There are certain pinch points — getting on and off the peninsula especially is a real consideration,” said Courure. “We also see kind of a limited resiliency in the system. So when there is poor weather or there are accidents, there’s sort of this inability to recover quickly from that because there’s truly nowhere else for the traffic to go.”
While Couture says there is “no one solution” to fixing the congestion, increasing accessibility and appeal towards other modes of transportation can reduce dependency on single-occupancy vehicles.
“We want to set expectations realistically, but we can manage it.”
