Begin your sojourn to attain what you have been seeking with Vaishno Devi darshan at the holy abode of Mata Adi Shakti. Located amid the folds of Trikoot Parvat in Jammu and Kashmir, Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is among the holiest shrines as per Hinduism. The Goddess Vaishno also known by the names Mata Rani, Trikuta and Vaishnavi is believed to be the granter of boon and no pilgrim goes empty handed from her abode. Which is why devotees take a Vaishno Devi tour at least once in their lifetime to seek the blessings of the goddess and wash off their sins.

As soon as you arrive at Jammu railway station or airport, your sojourn to Vaishno Devi Temple will commence. Our tour representative will guide you for the road trip to Katra which is located 50 km away from Jammu. As soon as you reach Katra, you will be escorted to the hotel, where you can relax for the night.

Today you will finally embark on the holy Vaishno Devi tour. The shrine sits at an elevation of 5300 ft. and is counted among one of the Shakti Peethas. Maa Durga is worshipped here as Vaishno Devi, a central deity in the Shaktism tradition of Hinduism. The distance between Katra and Bhawan is 13 km which can be covered by helicopter, ponies or palanquins.

As you step into the Vaishno Devi Bhawan, chants and clashing cymbals will soothe your senses. Spend some time at the shrine and seek blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi who is worshipped in the form of three natural rock formations, known as pindies. The pindies belong to Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

Later, head back to your hotel in Katra for night stay.

On day 3 you will be visiting Patnitop from Katra via road. It will take around 3 hours to reach the destination snuggled in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. As the name suggests, Patnitop is a hill top tourist location seated at an elevation of 2,024 m (6,640 ft.) and is adorned with lush greenery. The Chenab River flows near Patnitop, which adds more charm to the destination.

Upon arrival, check-in to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Guests can explore the panoramic and tranquil surroundings. Finish the day with a delectable dinner and relax for the night.

This is the last day of your spiritually enlightening Vaishno Devi tour with Patnitop. After having a wholesome breakfast, you will be escorted to the railway station/airport for the journey ahead.

Day 01: ARRIVAL AT JAMMU RAILWAY STATION & TRANSFER TO KATRA Day Schedule: Upon arrival at Jammu Railway Station and it is also the Winter capital of state Jammu & Kashmir. You will be met by our representative and transfer to Katra . On arrival at Katra we check in to the pre-arranged Hotel. Dinner & overnight stay at Katra Hotel.

Day 02: KATRA-VAISHNO DEVI DARSHAN Day Schedule: After a leisurely breakfast, Early morning, proceed for Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan- one of the most popular pilgrimages of India situated in the lap of Trikuta mountains across Katra town at an altitude of around 5200 feet. Yatra upto Bhawan involves a trek of nearly 12 Kms from Katra base camp known as Ban Ganga & 2.5 Kms from Sanji Chhat which is dropping point for pilgrims boarding through Helicopter. You have to hire a local auto rikshaw for reaching Ban Ganga or Helipad available round the clock at very nominal charges. Battery cars, Cable cars, Ponies, Palkis, Pithoos, Porters etc. are other means of transport during yatra for assisting senior citizens, children and physically challenged persons. After performing darshans, if time permits, visit Bhairo Temple & return back to Katra in the evening.Dinner& Overnight stay at Katra Hotel.

Day 03: KATRA TO PAHALGAM 220 Kms (07-08 Hrs One Way) Day Schedule: After breakfast check-out from hote landdrive to Pahalgam,Soon after having breakfast, start with your tour to Pahalgam from Katra, Pahalgam is popularly known as the “Valley Of Shepherd’s”. Pahalgam is situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River, Pahalgam (2,130 m) was once a humble shepherd’s village with breathtaking views.. You will be met by our representative and transfer to Hotel for Check in. Day 05: Pahalgam to Srinagar Day Schedule: Today; after having breakfast in the hotel, visit the scenic and rocky valleys of Chandanwadi, the astounding Snow Point which is located around 14km from Pahalgam and also enjoy a pony ride. Though all these activities can only be arranged at an additional cost, you are sure to enjoy these amazing experiences. In the evening you will be driven back to Srinagar.. Day 06 : SRINAGAR TO GULMARG (DAY EXCURSION TO GULMARG) 60 Kms –02 Hrs One Way Day Schedule: Early morning after leisure breakfast proceed to Gulmarg driving past willow trees, fast flowing streams and lush green meadows. Gulmarg – the meadow of flowers is an apt term for this idyllic flower-laden meadow offering a spectacular view of towering snow-capped peaks covered with dense forests of tall conifers and gigantic fir and pine trees. Katra is located just 50 km from Jammu and is well connected with the rest of the country by road and by air. On reaching Katra you can opt to undertake the Vaishno Devi Yatra through a helicopter and need to remember the following things.

• Shri Vaishno Devi Bhawan is approximately 2.5 km from the Helipad at Sanjhichhat and it takes about 08 minutes to cover the one-way distance.
• To and fro helicopter services to reach Shri Vaishno Devi Shrine from Katra can be booked online 60 days in advance of your tour.
• The price of the helicopter ride for one way from Katra to Sanjichhat orSanjhichhat to Katra is INR 1830 per person which makes it INR 3660 per passenger for a to and fro trip.
• Helicopter tickets can be booked online in advance from the Shrine Board’s official website.
• Children below two years of age will be carried free of cost in the lap of the accompanying adult.
• A single flight typically accommodates around 5 to 6 passengers.
• Passengers are requested to report to the Helipad at least one hour before the departure time of the flight. Those reporting late or after the set time shall be treated as ‘NO SHOW’ and are not eligible for refunds.
• Passengers should carry a copy of the helicopter ticket and yatra registration slip along with valid ID proof during the journey.
• The helicopter ticket is non-transferable.
• Helicopter services operate from 8:30 am until 7:00 pm, launching approximately every 20 minutes from both the Katra and Sanjichhat helipads.
• The helicopters operate subject to fair weather conditions, clear visibility, and range prescribed by DGCA.
• In case of flight cancellations due to bad weather or technical issues, the entire amount of the ticket is refunded to the passengers.

Rules for Online Booking and Cancellation of Helicopter Tickets

• Helicopter tickets can either be booked online from the Shrine Board’s Official website or at the spot through the ‘Current Heli-Ticket Counter’.
• For booking the helicopter tickets you need to have the Yatra Registration Slip and the ID Proof of all the pilgrims who wish to travel by air.
• To avail of the online booking facility, simply register on the website of the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and login with the username. Click on the helicopter service, fill in the travel dates, number of passengers, travel route, travel time, etc.
• Payment of helicopter ticket fees can be done through a Debit Card, Credit Card, or UPI.
• Once the booking is done prepone or postpone of the booking is not allowed.
• Tickets can be cancelled only through the ONLINE mode.
• Cancellation of the tickets can be made up to 40 days before the travel date and only 70% of the fare amount is refunded.
• The refund is initiated by the Shrine Board within 15 days of the cancellation.
• The refund is reimbursed to the same Credit card, Debit Card, or UPI account through which the payment was received at the time of booking.
• If a transaction fails on the Shrine Board’s website, the Board ensures a complete refund.

The cult of Shakti might be older than Hinduism, here's how

N avratri is an auspicious time when the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped with great reverence by devotees across the world. However, did you know that the cult of Shakti might be much older than the Hindu religion? Here we share an excerpt from the new book 'Mata Vaishno Devi: The Bhakti of Shakti' which explains this idea in greater detail. As the title suggests, the book not only explores the myths and legends related to Mata Vaishno Devi temple and Goddess Durga, but also acts as a complete guide to the holy place.

The history of the cult of Shakti is as old, if not older, than Hinduism. While the origins are not clear, it has been reported that the worship of Shakti or Mahadevi has been going on in the subcontinent for the last 8,000 years.

Thus, the cult of Shakti is, in some ways, the original religion of India and was primarily practised by the tribals inhabiting the subcontinent prior to the arrival of farmers. Once the first farmers in India arrived in Mehrgarh, which was one of the earliest sites of occupation of the Indus Valley Civilization, this school of thought and tradition was adopted by them. It was adopted by subsequent settlements in the following centuries. There is evidence of worship of the feminine and the early beginnings of a cult of Shakti present throughout the territory covered by the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indus Valley period is also the first time that the presence of other sacred symbols, such as the yoni, started and spread throughout the subcontinent.

After the fall of the Indus Valley Civilization, the worship of Devi and Shakti continued even with the arrival of the Vedic Age. The Vedic Age brought about a new pantheon of gods, and in this pantheon, the devis belonging to the Cult of Shakti found their place. This was the period when Shaktism became codified, as the Vedic Age also brought with it writing and texts that were written to formulate rituals and ceremonies. The most important of the female deities mentioned in the Vedas is Ushas. A number of hymns in the Vedas are dedicated exclusively to her. The three Divine Mothers mentioned in the Rig Veda who birthed the Vedic gods are Aditi, Prithvi and Saraswati. Prithvi continued to exist in later Hinduism as Bhudevi (goddess of the earth).

The historically recurring theme of the Devi being all-encompassing arises for the first time in such declarations as this one in the first book of the Rig Veda: ‘Aditi is the sky, Aditi is the air, Aditi is all gods... Aditi is the mother, the father and the son. Aditi is whatever shall be born.’

Also significant is the appearance of two of Hinduism’s most widely known and beloved goddesses in the famous hymn from the Rig Veda: Vac, identified with the present-day Saraswati; and Shri, better known today as Lakshmi. In the hymn, still recited by thousands of Hindus each day, the goddess unambiguously declares:

I am the Sovereign Queen; the treasury of all treasures; the chief of all objects of worship; whose all-pervading Self manifests all gods and goddesses; whose birthplace is in the midst of the causal waters; who in breathing forth gives birth to all created worlds, and yet extends beyond them, so vast am I in greatness. (Mandala X)

The great Kena Upanishad (c. 750–500 bce) tells an early tale in which the Devi appears as shakti, or essential power, of the supreme brahman. It begins with the Vedic trinity of Agni, Vayu and Indra boasting and posturing in the flush of a recent victory over a demon hoard, until they suddenly find themselves bereft of divine power in the presence of a mysterious yaksha or forest spirit. When Indra tries to approach and question the yaksha, it disappears, replaced by the Devi in the form of a well-adorned yakshini:

It was Uma, the daughter of Himavat. Indra said to her, ‘Who was that yaksha?’ She replied, ‘It is brahman. It is only through the victory of brahman that you have thus become great.’ After that, Indra and the devas realized the Truth ... having known brahman through such direct experience. (Kena Upanishad III)

Therefore, Shakti is present throughout most of the foundational texts of Vedic Hinduism as well as in other literary creations of the late Vedic period. While there is no presence of a Shakti Devi in the Ramayana, she is mentioned prominently in the Mahabharata in the form of Durga, with her residence in the Vindhyas, reiterating that the cult of Shakti first existed among the tribal groups of India.

In time and with the rise of violence-prone and patriarchal societies, the female deities have been replaced by male deities across the world. But in India, this did not change much. Male gods in India have always existed alongside female deities, and even though they have acquired more prominence lately, our female goddesses have not been ignored as a result of this. They continue to be honoured and respected on their own merit and as graceful consorts of male deities— Parvati as Shiva’s consort, Lakshmi as Vishnu’s and Saraswati as Brahma’s. Additionally, powerful goddesses like Durga and Kali have largely kept their independent status; they are revered and popular even today.
