Journey’s Jonathan Cain Talks Vegas Residency, Perseverance and New 2022 LP

by Jacob Uitti December 9, 2021, 11:10 am

Journey is back in Las Vegas. While the Bay Area-born rock band, which is known for songs like “ Don’t Stop Believin ’” and “Faithfully,” has been playing Sin City since the Millenium, the group is back again after a pandemic-induced hiatus. (Now three shows in with two more to go in December.) And, says keyboardist Jon Cain, they’re already seeing people tear up. “I saw a couple of ladies in tears in the front row,” Cain says of the band’s recent shows in the desert.

For Cain, to be back is a real achievement. He and the band missed the stage, their time away was “devastating.” But in the meantime, the group wrote and recorded a new album, long-distance, which Journey is set to release in spring 2022 and will feature bassist Randy Jackson.

“We got lemons and we made lemonade,” Cain tells American Songwriter of the album that could feature upwards of 16 songs. “This record has a lot of fire.”

In June, Journey debuted their new album’s first single, “The Way We Used To Be,” which was born via file-sharing. It’s also true to the core of the band, immediately part of the best of their epic cannon. Journey guitarist Neal Schon was sending Cain keyboard licks he’d been working on. Unsure whether they were “Journey” songs or not, he let Cain check them out. Cain was inspired and got his pen moving. Along with playing keys, Cain has written song lyrics for much of his life, including the chorus for “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which was born from a conversation he had with his father. Now, in lockdown, Cain wrote about what he observed: he didn’t want to accept this “new normal” everyone was talking about. So, he said so.

“I reject the ‘new norm’,” he says. “No, we’re going back to the way we used to be. Our fans don’t want a new normal.”

Cain recalls the pandemic. He remembers acquiring COVID-19 and the separation he had from his wife in quarantine. In his soul was this idea of getting back together. When he heard Schon’s loop, which Cain says “sounded like the pandemic” and offered blues sensibilities and feelings of real pain, he wanted to put this idea for a hook down and sing about distance and his hope of shrinking it.

“We’re ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ that’s who we are,” Cain says. “We never quit!”

During the Vegas shows, the fans have taken to the new tune. It engenders a sense of hope and community.

Cain says he’s “old school.” On the new record, he also wrote a love song about “still believing” in love. It’s one of many tracks on the forthcoming LP, which Cain says will include signature Journey sounds, heartfelt ballads, and big rockers. In fact, the band is still in the process of sequencing the tracks, getting the exact right order. For the record, Cain wrote all the lyrics long-distance. He gives praise to a higher power for that.

“It’s my relationship with the Lord,” he says. “When it comes to Journey, He says, ‘I got ya,” and He sure did.”

Journey, which was originally comprised of past members from groups like Santana and Steve Miller Band, released its self-titled debut record in 1975. The band released a new album every year into 1980 when it released two albums in 12 months. Escape came in 1981 and with it, Journey’s biggest hit, the one that will last for likely thousands of years—“Don’t Stop Believin’.” The song was born during a conversation when a dejected Cain was talking with his father about quitting music. But his father encouraged that his big break was just around the corner and “don’t stop believing.” Boom. Ever since, the band has lasted through lineup changes, lead singer changes, and decades of time.

“It’s great to feel relevant at this point,” Cain says. “I’m certainly grateful for our fans for sticking with us.”

Cain recalls early reviews from outlets like Rolling Stone , which, he says, dismissed the band as some pop fad. Yet, Cain laughs, the big groups in the ‘70s and ‘80s now have to sing lines like, Girls, girls, girls, which may not feel as natural today as in the prime of their youths. To wit, over the summer, Journey played to 120,000 people at Lollapalooza, many of which Cain says were families. Despite these more wholesome roots, the band’s new record has much vim and vigor, stoked by Schon’s ambitious playing, Cain’s prolific lyrics, and lead singer Arnel Pineda’s sky-piercing vocals.

“Arnel delivered,” Cain says of the frontman, who joined Journey in 2007, filling the big shoes of Steve Perry. “We’re really blessed to have a man with a humble heart and mighty voice being our leader. He’s a showman. Last night the crowd was kind of dead but in the end, he had them standing up and they were loving it. It’s Vegas!”

For Cain, that’s the magic of music. Especially in a live setting (and Journey will be going on tour starting February 22 in Pittsburgh with Billy Idol.) It’s this invisible thing that has so much power to change. It brings joy to a room, energy. It can bring someone to tears and to laughter. As such, there’s a responsibility to being a musician, a purveyor of this sound. But if you do it right—if you keep the faith—it will pay off. And people will remember.

“I go to sleep at night,” Cain says, “and I know when I pass, I’ve left something behind. I think every artist wants to leave something behind they will be remembered for. It’s the songs that you leave behind—that’s all that matters.”

Jonathan Cain Says He Will Tour With Journey in 2023 Amid Legal Dispute With Neal Schon

Journey will be taking part in their 50th anniversary tour this year, but there's still plenty of intrigue surrounding who will actually be part of the trek. Though guitarist Neal Schon recently hinted that fans would be seeing former keyboardist Gregg Rolie during the tour, the group's longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain revealed in a social media post that he's enjoying some time on the ski slopes before "hitting the road with Journey."

Schon and Cain, the two longest tenured members currently in Journey who both have a stake in the band's business, have been publicly at odds in recent months, with Schon filing legal action against Cain over alleged denied access to the band's financial records.

Back in October, it was announced that Journey would be hitting the road in 2023 with Toto as part of their 50th anniversary tour. Then, a month later, news of Schon's lawsuit against Cain was revealed.  The guitarist claimed that he had been denied access to the band's financial records and that Cain had set up an American Express card under the group's name without telling him and that "millions of Journey funds had flowed through it."

Cain countered publicly that Schon's " reckless spending " was at the issue of their dispute, and that he always had access to the financial records but was seeking an extension of his spending limits.

Soon after, Schon began teasing the possibility of Gregg Rolie's return to the band for their 50th anniversary tour. Rolie plays keyboards and preceded Cain in the group. Then, just last week, while teasing the upcoming tour, Schon confirmed to a fan about the Rolie return rumors, " You'll be seeing him ."

Also of note amongst the band's in-fighting is that Schon filed a cease-and-desist against Cain after the keyboardist took part in a sing-along of "Don't Stop Believin'" with several right wing politicians at an event at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. Cain's wife, televangelist Paula White-Cain is Trump's former spiritual advisor. Schon has also accused White-Cain of unlawfully accessing the band's bank account , claiming that her "signature has appeared on purported Journey-related bank documents since at least July 2020."

In Jonathan Cain's new social media post, he is posing with his wife on the ski slopes, commenting, "I feel very grateful and blessed to share this time on the slopes with my Baby before hitting the road with Journey," adding hashtags for #grateful #blessed #mountains #love and #ski.

In other Journey news, the band's former frontman Steve Perry recently dropped a lawsuit he had filed against Schon and Cain over song trademarks being used in the band's merchandising. Perry filed the suit back in September of last year. Speaking about Perry's decision to withdraw the suit, Schon initially tweeted out that Cain's claim he was " blatantly trying to rip off SP " were now set to rest. He later added in a separate tweet , "No more lawsuit with Steve. Time to talk."

Journey's upcoming tour gets underway Jan. 27 and 28 in Durant, Oklahoma. You can get tickets for Journey's upcoming tour here .

Jonathan Cain Confirms He Will Tour With Journey Despite Lawsuit

Jonathan Cain is for at least the second time in six years dispelling rumors that Journey is breaking up due to a dispute between himself and Neal Schon .

Cain confirmed on Tuesday that he will indeed be with the band next month when it launches its 2023 'Freedom' tour, celebrating Journey's 50th anniversary.

The Journey keyboardist since 1980 shared a photo Tuesday of himself and wife, Paula White-Cain , on a ski trip in Colorado.

"I feel very grateful and blessed to share this time on the slopes with my Baby before hitting the road with Journey," Cain wrote.

Schon filed a lawsuit against Cain last fall in a dispute over the band's finances. The guitarist and Journey founder Schon has repeatedly taken swipes at Cain via social media, and last week revealed that original Journey keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie would be joining the band for its anniversary tour.

While Rolie's pending return cause some uncertainly among fans, it appears all three musicians plan to coexist on the tour, which launches February 4, following a two-night residency in Oklahoma.

Despite Schon's differences with Cain over the years, he has yet to suggest the keyboardist was going anywhere. (Schon and Cain are equal partners in Journey.)

Asked recently by one fan how he and Cain could go about the Journey tour amid their legal feud, Schon answered that both he and Cain would "Channel the great music. Honor it," as they have in the past.

Schon and Cain feuded publicly circa 2017, but eventually reconciled and wrote their 2021 studio album, Freedom , together. Both musicians have noted in the past that their personal and political differences go away when they are focused on music .

Jonathan Cain Will Still Join Journey’s 2023 Tour Amid Legal Battle

Jonathan Cain Will Still Join Journey’s 2023 Tour Amid Legal Battle | Society Of Rock Videos

via WGN News / Youtube

Despite the ongoing legal issues between some members, Journey is more than sure into embarking on their 50th-anniversary tour this year.

Recently, guitarist Neal Schon gave a hint that the former keyboardist Gregg Rolie will be joining the tour. Meanwhile, the band’s longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain also made a post saying that he’s enjoying some time on the ski slopes before “hitting the road with Journey.”

The two musicians are the longest-tenured members of Journey at the present time but have a feud regarding the band’s business. Both of them have been very vocal in sharing their own versions of the story.

Last October, they officially announced that there will be an upcoming 2023 tour with Toto as part of their 50th anniversary. The following month, reports about Schon filing a legal action against Cain were all over the news. ( canadianpharmacy365.net ) Schon claimed that he’s being denied with access to the band’s financial records by Cain in which “millions of Journey funds had flowed through it.”

Cain, on the other hand, justified that he did that all because of Schon’s “reckless spending.” Schon intentionally teased that there’s a huge possibility of Rolie’s return to the band for their 50th-anniversary tour. Rolie was the one who preceded Cain in the group.

Last week, this was confirmed by Schon saying to a fan that “You’ll be seeing him,” referring to Rolie. Meanwhile, Cain seemed not to be affected by this. In a new social media post, he is posing with his wife on the ski slopes, saying:

“I feel very grateful and blessed to share this time on the slopes with my Baby before hitting the road with Journey.”

How Jonathan Cain’s Breakthrough Helped Spark New Journey Music

From " Faithfully " to faith, Journey 's return to new music has also brought the band's keyboardist, guitarist and composer Jonathan Cain back to some fresh tunes of his own - specifically the single "Oh Lord Lead Us."

Outside the band, Cain has immersed himself in Christian music in recent years, to the tune of five albums, including the 2017 holiday set Unsung Noel . But his faith in faith-based music was tested recently.

"I had given up on writing worship music for a while," says Cain, whose wife, Paula White, is a televangelist and author who served as an advisor to Donald Trump during his presidency. Cain contracted a brief case of COVID-19  in September that he says passed quickly. The pandemic, however, pushed him to pick up the pen and try to write again.

"I saw the fear and panic and anxiety in the society, and I said, 'It's time to write something that's positive,'" recalls Cain, who filmed the video for "Oh Lord Lead Us" last month at Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. "And God just kept at me and kept at me, so I opened my Bible one morning and there was [1 Chronicles 16:11]: 'Look to the lord for strength/Always seek his presence.' And I was like, 'Oh, yeah, that's it.' That's what triggered it. All I needed was that one scripture, and I said, 'Yeah, Lord, lead us. Lead us through this mess.'"

You can watch the exclusive premiere of Cain's "Oh Lord Lead Us" video below.

Cain adds that he was also looking for "a New Year's feeling" for the song, an arena-caliber anthem he premiered during the holiday at the City of Destiny Church in Florida, where his wife is also pastor. He recorded the track - along with others that will be part of a new EP, likely out this fall - at his own Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville, joined by Jason Derlatka, a Journey auxiliary musician who's been promoted to full-time membership in the band and is, according to Cain, "Journey's secret weapon."

He adds that he "had my hands full, going back to worship [music] and writing Journey at the same time. It was interesting that Neal [Schon]  and Narada [Michael Walden] were writing a lot of songs needing lyrics, and I was just writing them, supernaturally. I heard a song, and the lyrics were done in a couple hours." He feels it was a reward for his reengagement. "I believe my prolificacy came from being obedient to God's calling - 'Well, bring me some worship music and I will give you lyrics to the Journey album. I'll fill your head with whatever you need.' And it seemed like whatever I had to come up with, I came up with it."

The first fruits of that were heard in " The Way We Used To Be ," which came out last month and marks the first new material by Journey's latest lineup, which also includes singer  Arnel Pineda and bassist Randy Jackson, who played with the band in the mid-'80s. It emerges after Cain and Schon successfully fought off an alleged "attempted corporate coup d'etat" by former members Ross Valory and Steve Smith , which led to their firings . Cain says the drama is behind the band now, with Journey's focus firmly on the future now.

"It was sort of a shocking thing, that brothers had come to that," he says. "We had to sort it out. You get lemons, you make lemonade - what else are you gonna do? It's probably not that out of the ordinary for bands to do this kind of stuff, and it's usually based on greed or whatever. I really am glad it's behind us, and I wish everybody well, really. I have no ill will towards anyone."

Cain says the new Journey album is "close to being done," though with no release date set as of yet. There's a tentative title, which he's not revealing, and the package is being designed by Jim Welch, who worked with the band on several classic albums, including Infinity , Departure and Escape .

"It's typical Journey, I think," Cain says. "We're back to our old sound, but it's got a little bit more on the bottom end. It's got fire. It's just a little bit more edge to it. Neal's playing his butt off, and it's very driven, very cool. The songs came very interesting. I like it a lot."

Journey return to the road on July 29, with a warm-up show at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom before playing at Lollapalooza two days later. A handful of other dates are on tap, as well as a December residency at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (formerly the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino) and a full-scale tour in 2022.

"It's gonna be great," says Cain, a Chicago native. "It's a long time coming. I know that the fans have missed it. So have we. I think when you take something away, like what happened during [the pandemic], that purpose becomes more urgent. I think COVID taught us all how lucky we were, how fortunate our lives have been. When that purpose is taken away, we want it even more. I think we'll all enjoy life a lot more and hopefully ... appreciate each other better."

The battle between Journey's Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain is getting really messy

In the latest update to the ongoing legal saga, Neal Schon has alleged that Jonathan Cain's wife improperly accessed Journey's bank accounts

Johnathan Cain and Neal Schon at an awards show

In the latest update to the ongoing spat between Journey members Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, Schon's lawyer's have alleged that Cain's wife, Paula White-Cain - televangelist and "spiritual adviser" to former US President Donald Trump - accessed the band's bank accounts without Schon's consent.

In a cease-and-desist letter obtained by the New York Post , Schon's lawyers address White-Cain directly, saying “We have learned that despite the prior mutual agreement between Mr. Schon and Mr. Jonathan Cain that the business of the band and the Journey Related Entities would be handled only by Mr. Schon and Mr. Cain as individuals, your name appears as an authorised signatory on the City National Bank accounts of Freedom JN LLC.

“We further demand that you immediately cease and desist and refrain in the future from inserting yourself in any business of the band and any legal entities used by the band as this contradicts the existing agreement between Mr. Schon and Mr. Cain.”

The letter is the latest development in the ongoing battle between the two musicians, which kicked off in November when Schon accused Cain of setting up a credit card account without his knowledge , an account through which "millions of Journey funds" flowed.

Cain responded with a statement that read, "This is a matter that should have been resolved privately, but I am forced to publicly respond now to Neal’s malicious lies and personal attacks on my family and I in an effort to garner public support for his ill-conceived lawsuit – a lawsuit that has absolutely no merit."

Cain went on to accuse Schon of "excessive spending" and enjoying an "extravagant lifestyle", leading him to run up "enormous personal charges on the band’s credit card account."

The following month, Schon issued a cease-and-desist order after Cain performed Journey's Don't Stop Believin' at an event at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, claiming that Cain "should not be capitalising on Journey’s brand to promote his personal political or religious agenda to the detriment of the band."

Cain responded with another statement, which read, "Neal Schon should look in the mirror when he accuses me of causing harm to the Journey brand. I have watched him damage our brand for years and am a victim of both his and his wife's bizarre behaviour. Neal sued Live Nation twice, losing both times, and damaging our ability to ever work with them again."

The statement continued, "Neal and his wife recklessly spend Journey's money until there is none left for operating costs. If anyone is destroying the Journey brand, it is Neal and Neal alone."

In other Journey legal news, former singer Steve Perry has dropped a lawsuit against Schon and Cain, after initially claiming that the pair had registered a number of Journey song titles with their company with a view to using them on merchandise without Perry's permission.  Writing on social media, Schon wrote, "No more lawsuit with Steve. Time to talk."

Journey's Freedom tour kicks off early next month, and while both Cain and Schon were involved in the original announcement, Schon has since confirmed that founding member Gregg Rolie would be joining the touring line-up. It's unclear whether Cain is still involved.

“In the end, he [Schon] needs me as much as I need him,” Cain told Classic Rock in 2022 . “You don’t like me or you don’t like my religion or my politics, fine. But in the end we come together to play music. That’s what it’s about.”

JOURNEY's JONATHAN CAIN: 'We're Very Happy With ARNEL PINEDA'

In a new interview with Steve King of the 105.3 The Bone radio station, JOURNEY keyboardist Jonathan Cain spoke about the band's current working relationship with its longtime vocalist Arnel Pineda . Pineda was a bar and club singer working in Manila, Philippines in 2007 when he got an e-mail from JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon who had seen videos of Pineda performing on YouTube and asked him to come to San Francisco and audition to become the band's new frontman.

"Yeah, Arnel 's 16 years celebrating — this is his 16th year [with JOURNEY ]," Cain said. "[It's] probably the longest tenure of any lead singer for the band. So, he's been crushing it for us. He's got his kids on the road with him this time, and he seems really content and happy. And we're really proud of everything he's done up to this point. And we see some years left. There's definitely still some gas in the tank. But we're very happy with Arnel . He's amazing."

Classic JOURNEY singer Steve Perry left the band in 1998 and was replaced by Steve Augeri . Jeff Scott Soto replaced Augeri in JOURNEY in December 2006 after Augeri began suffering throat problems on the road. But Soto lasted less than a year, and in December 2007, JOURNEY hired Pineda , who fronts the band to this day.

Back in August 2022, Schon was asked what it had been like to work with Pineda for the prior 15 years. He responded: " Arnel is just a gem. He's more amazing right now than he was when I first found him in Manila 15 years ago, when he was homeless and he was in dire straits. I was searching for the new singer for JOURNEY and I chose YouTube to look all over the world for the singer. When I heard his voice, I knew that he was it — with no other thought. It hit me emotionally in my heart. I went, 'That is the voice. He is the voice. I know he can do it.' And so I stuck to my guns, with a lot of resistance from many — from within the band and from management. They all thought I was crazy. I said, 'I know I'm right. So get him over here.' We got him over. And he proved that I was right again."

Neal continued: "The show we just played the other night, he sounded phenomenal through the whole show. We finally got his in-ears sorted out; we've got a great mixer in front now. It sounds like a record every night. And he's sounding phenomenal every night. And he's very excited about some of the new direction that we took that allows him to show how creative he can be without having to emulate our other albums, which is a requirement for any singer that would come into JOURNEY . It's either that or you throw away all your hits that you ever had. And what do you do? Start from ground zero again? It doesn't make sense.

"So I knew when I found Arnel that I had found a true chameleon like no other singer I've ever heard. He is amazing. I love him. He's a true warrior."

Born in the Philippines, Pineda has been fronting the legendary rockers since 2007. A vocal doppelganger for JOURNEY 's longtime vocalist Steve Perry , Arnel has helped put JOURNEY back in arenas once again. But some fans were not happy about the addition of Pineda , complaining about his ethnicity and dismissing his voice as a "copycat" of Perry .

Pineda and Perry finally crossed paths when JOURNEY and its former singer shared the stage at their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in April 2017. While accepting the award, Steve spoke warmly about his former bandmates, as well as the man who replaced him. "I must give a shout-out to a man who sings his heart out every night, Arnel Pineda ," Perry said.

Although Pineda did not get inducted with his bandmates, he did get up and join them at the Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, singing "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Lights" .

Six years ago, Perry told SiriusXM that he didn't perform with JOURNEY at the Rock Hall ceremony because he is "not in the band. I haven't been in the band for quite some time," he explained. " Arnel 's been in the band for almost 10 years, I think. He's a sweet kid — he's a wonderful kid. He sings his heart out every night. It's his gig."

As for meeting Pineda before the induction, Perry said: "There was something endearing about the way he looked at me. He was meeting, like, a grandfather. [ Laughs ] He's got the gig. It's his gig. He's doing great."

Pineda has overcome a tremendous number of obstacles throughout his life, including the loss of his mother at a young age, homelessness and borderline starvation, making him an inspiration and providing hope for millions of people around the globe. Blessed with the ability to give back, Pineda mobilized his team to join the battle against poverty and its ensuing havoc on Philippine youth.

Journey's Jonathan Cain responds to cease-and-desist order, says bandmate should 'look in the mirror'

Fox News Flash top entertainment and celebrity headlines are here.

Jonathan Cain, keyboardist and guitarist for rock band Journey, has responded to the cease-and-desist order bandmate Neal Schon filed against him for performing hit song "Don’t Stop Believin" during a Trump event at Mar-a-Lago last month.

A representative for Cain sent the artist's statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday, which started with Schon should "look in the mirror" when accusing Cain of "causing harm to the Journey brand."

In the cease-and-desist letter obtained by Variety, Schon said Cain's decision to play the song during the November event politicizes the band and "polarizes the band’s fans and outreach."

"Mr. Cain has no right to use Journey for politics. His politics should be his own personal business. He should not be capitalizing on Journey’s brand to promote his personal political or religious agenda to the detriment of the band," the letter continued.

Cain's response on Thursday accused Schon's alleged behavior over the years of being more harmful to the brand than anything.

"I have watched him damage our brand for years and am a victim of both his--and his wife's--bizarre behavior. Neal sued Live Nation twice, losing both times, and damaging our ability to ever work with them again; Neal outrageously tried to take away trademarks from Steve Perry; Neal and his wife continually insult the professionalism of numerous accountants, road managers, and management firms with endless legal threats and their bullying, toxic, and incoherent emails; Neal argues online with fans who don’t see eye to eye with him; and Neal and his wife recklessly spend Journey’s money until there is none left for operating costs," he wrote.

The statement finished with saying "if anyone is destroying the Journey brand, it is Neal – and Neal alone."

The longtime bandmates have reportedly been at odds for a while, as a recent legal battle took place over Schon's alleged denied access to the band's American Express card and its records.

At the time, Cain's lawyer argued Schon's access to the corporate account was limited because he charged more than $1 million in "improper personal expenses" to the card.

Batgirl's New Costume Is a Dark Evolution for the Bat-Family's Deadliest Fighter

  • Cassandra Cain's new Batgirl redesign reflects her dark past and emotional journey, subtly representing the way the character has become a mainstay among DC heroes after rising through tragedy.
  • Birds of Prey #9 introduces the team into a mysterious dimension, while also giving them updated suits, including one that helps to continue adding emotional depth for Cassandra's character.
  • The New costumes for the Birds of Prey in their current ongoing series reflect their personalities, hinting at deeper connections and character growth as the title progresses.

Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Birds of Prey (2023) #9 !

As the Birds of Prey travel through mysterious dimensions, Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl gets a dark costume change. While the birds search for Barbara Gordon, they crash into a black-and-gray world where they all receive updated suits to reflect their unknown setting. While the rest of the costumes have a sort of gothic glamour, Cassandra’s new look highlights the character’s troubled past, with a slightly eerie and unsettling fashion choice.

Birds of Prey #9 finds the team following Barbara Gordon through a portal, after she is abducted. Black Canary and the Birds of Prey bravely attempt rescue the team’s creator, though they’re seemingly unprepared for the dimension-hopping adventures that await them, as they fall into this strange new world.

The issue is also set to debut new looks for the team – on the heels of their Vixen-brand lingerie outfits from last issue’s fashion show – as the preview depicts them wearing costumes fit for the smoky noir environment they’ve landed in. In particular, Cassandra Cain's new mask has strange and dark features, with lines that resemble tears falling from her eyes.

Batgirl's Badass New Costume Teases A Darker Future for DC's Cassandra Cain

A dark future reveals that Batgirl Cassandra Cain is going to be getting a new costume, but will she survive long enough to show it off?

Cassandra Cains New Costume Highlights Her Tragic Upbringing

Cassandras costume in the preview for Birds of Prey #9 is a dark redesign illustrating her complicated emotional journey.

While the details of Cassandra Cain’s new Batgirl mask make for a cool redesign, the new look also spotlights the character’s tragic past. Cassandra was mentored by Barbara Gordon, and saved her and Jim Gordon from her own father. The daughter of two assassins, David Cain and Lady Shiva, Cassandra was raised by David to be the ultimate weapon, and he neglected to teach her how to speak or interact socially. After her father’s brutal training, she finally escaped him, after being forced to kill – all before becoming an essential DC hero.

Although her assassin upbringing molded her into a powerful superhero, Cassandra was trained to be an ultra-violent killer against her will. Cassandra’s costume in the preview for Birds of Prey #9 is a dark redesign illustrating her complicated emotional journey. She may now be the Bat-family’s strongest fighter, but it wasn’t an easy journey to get to her heroic destination. While her found families of the Bat-family and Birds of Prey have helped Cassandra out of her shell, the tearful costume signifies a lingering sadness from her tortured past.

As the Birds get new costumes for their upcoming romp in a strange world, Cassie Cain's emotional journey is written on the tear-stained face of her new mask.

DC Will Introduce More New, Exciting Looks For The Birds Of Prey

The new costumes being bestowed upon the Birds of Prey as they enter a new universe will seemingly continue as they search for Barbara Gordon and hunt down her abductor. While they enter a setting that could be out of Nosferatu and get matching mysterious looks to match, future solicitations for the series preview other looks, as they explore even more worlds, like jungle costumes as the team battles dinosaurs . With updated fashion choices to accommodate their adventures, the Birds of Prey’s personalities could be reflected in each new look , like Cass’ in Birds of Prey #9.

While Cassandra Cain is perhaps the Bat-family’s deadliest fighter, she also has a strong moral compass that makes her past indiscretions on her father’s orders continue to haunt her. As the Birds get new costumes for their upcoming romp in a strange world, Cassie Cain's emotional journey is written on the tear-stained face of her new mask. Though the costume may be one-and-done for the issue, it highlights Batgirl’s evolution from lethal assassin to virtuous superhero and the guilt she still carries from her harrowing upbringing.

Birds of Prey #9 will be available May 7, 2024 from DC Comics.
