North Myrtle Beach Intracoastal Waterway & Landings

Charter a boat and cast a line, cruise along on a personal watercraft (PWC), or simply sit back and enjoy a bite and a beverage along the shore. Even when you leave the beach, there are still miles of shoreline and waterways to explore in North Myrtle Beach.

The waters of our Intracoastal Waterway are gorgeous to look at and fun to explore. There are as many ways to check them out as you can dream up.

Meet the “Locals”

Action Water Sportz gets you up close with some of nature’s most fun-loving creatures! They have you jump on a jet ski and head out on a dolphin-watching excursion. Their guides know all the best spots to see the dolphins, sea turtles, and other animals calling NMB home.

Be the captain of your own adventure when you rent a pontoon boat from Myrtle Beach Water Sports . Spend the day exploring the sights of the Intracoastal and perhaps even having a picnic on nearby Bird Island, a local's favorite spot. Myrtle Beach Water Sports also offers guided dolphin tours from the Intracoastal to the Atlantic on their 140 passenger Sea Screamer and Sea Thunder speed boats. For those wanting to go all out on your adventure, you can even book a private cruise on a yacht through Luxury Charters.

If you want to reel in the catch of the day, there are plenty of ways to troll the Intracoastal Waterway. Calabash Fishing Fleet boats are local legends, cruising the waterway including the Blackhawk, Navigator, and Miss Calabash . Passenger size is limited so you aren’t crammed in, so book early. Captain Smiley Fishing Charters has inshore fishing charters led by an experienced group of captains. They also have larger boats to accommodate big groups and parties.

One of the area’s oldest fishing companies, Hurricane Fleet Fishing Center knows the waters like the back of their hand. They have a dolphin cruise and offer lots of specialty fishing excursions.

Grab a Bite

If you’ve worked up an appetite after a day on the water, or just want to sit back and leisurely watch the world float by, we have great restaurants along the waterway. Boardwalk Billy’s is famous for its raw bar and ribs. You can come in the front door, or pull up to their dock in your boat. Dine like a local and order their Steam Pot or the Oyster Po Boy.

If you’re looking for sushi, seafood, or the perfectly cooked steak, Filet’s is the place to be. This waterfront favorite is a go-to for any special occasion, even if the special occasion is just happy hour with friends or family.

Ready for Launch

If you’re bringing your own boat or jet skis with you to NMB, you’ll want to start your day on the water at one of the two public boat landings in the area. Johnny Causey Landing offers 2 launching lanes, a courtesy dock, 45 boat trailer parking spaces, and portable restroom facilities. Locals love this landing because of its proximity to waterfront dining like Captain Archie's and the short and scenic trip along the Intracoastal on to Bird Island. The Peter Vaught Boat Ramp boasts 2 launching lanes, multiple courtesy docks, 40 boat trailer parking spaces, and a picnic pavilion. Launching here and heading North will quickly bring you to Barefoot Landing . Here, free boat docking is available so you can grab a quick bite or listen to some live entertainment.

Golf Tourism Solutions

Myrtle Beach, S.C. , has long been reputed as a destination with options. Cruise north on Route 17 from the airport and you’ll encounter a smorgasbord of tempting possibilities. Craving seafood? There’s an all-you-can-eat buffet ready to serve you at seemingly every corner. Interested in mini-golf? Drop a ball at one of a whopping 35 locations — many complete with erupting volcanoes. Seeking family-friendly entertainment? Glean some ideas from the numerous billboards along the highway advertising tried-and-true time killers like the Ripley’s museum, aquarium and even a pirate-themed dinner show.

And then, of course, there’s the golf. Myrtle Beach isn’t known as the Golf Capital of the World for nothing. With 90 courses in the area — more than any other single destination on the planet — the breadth and depth of the selection offered is the stuff of dreams for visitors looking to plan an itinerary around the game.

At a time when everything feels more expensive than ever before — and a single round at a bucket-list course is approaching four-figure territory — Myrtle is like a breath of fresh air. Here, you can create an itinerary to suit any budget. At the high end, you have Top 100 staples like Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and The Dunes Golf & Beach Club , with the latter tapped to host the PGA Tour for the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic this week. Other standouts include the Barefoot Resort courses, The Resort Club at Grande Dunes , Tidewater Golf Club , True Blue Golf Club — the list goes on. The courses range from good to great without any fussiness. Myrtle just feels comfortable — a place for the everyman (and woman).

Like many warm-weather locales with loads of golf to offer, Myrtle Beach not only saw a significant uptick in visitors and rounds during the pandemic but also in its permanent population. According to U.S. News and World Report, Myrtle Beach is America’s fastest-growing city, outpacing popular Florida destinations like Sarasota, Fort Myers and Lakeland.

Myrtle Beach Golf: The ultimate guide to America’s ultimate golf destination

That skyrocketing growth has been a boon for the local economy. And thanks to an influx of fresh investment, the Myrtle Beach you thought you knew is undergoing an unprecedented renaissance. Up and down the Grand Strand, properties are endeavoring to make what has long been a one-of-a-kind golf destination into an even better experience. “Luxury” and “Myrtle Beach” have not necessarily been synonymous in the past, but there is perhaps no better example of how Myrtle Beach is changing that narrative than the transformation underway at Sea Trail Golf Resort .

Located in Sunset Beach, N.C., on the northern edge of the Grand Strand, Sea Trail, which opened its first course in 1979, is in the midst of an extensive multimillion-dollar metamorphosis. The course fell into bankruptcy in 2012 and continued to languish after being purchased by an overseas owner. But in 2018, Parker Smith, the owner of Golf Trek, one of the area’s largest golf package providers, took over the resort’s existing villa rental program and was encouraged by what he felt was the resort’s untapped potential.

As an investor in the ownership group that took over the property in 2023, Smith has been an instrumental figure in overseeing the resort’s upgrades, which include renovating its three championship golf courses, removing hundreds of trees, planting new grasses and constructing brand-new greens, bunkers and cart paths. A complete renovation of the existing clubhouse is nearly complete, and the 40,000-square-foot convention center was recently reopened. There are also plans to construct a 150-room hotel on a site adjacent to the convention center, and the resort has approval to build up to 450 new residential units on the property. In short: Sea Trail is on track to become a top-tier stay-and-play option.

Hole No. 8 at Tidewater GC.

“A significant number of courses that are part of the Myrtle Beach area are located here in North Carolina,” Smith told me when I visited Sea Trail on a recent weekday morning. “I’ve seen the stay-and-play demand grow and grow, but there’s not a lot of that in Myrtle. You have to get in the car and drive. But this is different. We want Sea Trail to be a destination.”

Word of the resort’s new ownership and improvements is getting around, and the courses were busy on the day I visited. Rebuilding trust and consumer confidence is the first step to regaining steady play, Smith told me. Then, wowing guests with the new and improved amenities will keep them coming back for more.

The same rationale is being put to work at other area courses too. Established staples like Tidewater, the Jack Nicklaus–designed Pawleys Plantation Golf & CC , Grande Dunes and Barefoot Resort have all undergone recent facelifts in order to make the courses more playable and enjoyable, work that entailed removing trees, refreshing or removing bunkers, widening fairways and improving the clubhouse experience.

Despite the golf boom of the past few years, no one I spoke to in Myrtle Beach seemed content to rest on their laurels.

“We need to upgrade,” Dave Genevro, Barefoot Resort’s general manager, told me. “We can’t stay the same because you never stay the same. You’re either getting better or you’re going backward.”

Hole No. 15 at Barefoot Resort's Dye course.

That sentiment is shared throughout the Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach resort owners and managers gather once a month to share ideas, develop marketing plans and talk through problems. The way they see it, if a competitor’s customer has a good experience, they’ll come back, and that person could very well become their own customer down the line. That kind of support and collaboration is rare in golf tourism, and it’s something the industry veterans in Myrtle appreciate.

Steve Mays is the president of Founders Group International and Tee Time Central, a course management suite that has renovated 10 of the company’s 21 layouts over the past four years, including Grande Dunes and Pawleys Plantation. “There’s never been a time when anybody’s been renovating their courses like they are now,” Mays said. “We need to ensure that we’re redefining our product and reinvigorating our products. We can’t be your dad’s or grandfather’s Myrtle beach.”

Thanks to the area’s tireless pursuit of improvement, dad, grandpa and grandson will have a grand time on the Grand Strand for years to come.

Blades Brown, 16, shoots 66, moves up Myrtle Beach Classic leaderboard in PGA Tour debut

intracoastal cruise myrtle beach

Brentwood Academy golfer Blades Brown, 16, shot a bogey-free 66 and was tied for 22nd Saturday after the third round of the Myrtle Beach Classic in the sophomore's PGA Tour debut.

Brown made five birdies, including four on the back nine. He started the back nine with birdies on Nos. 10, 12 and 13 and sits at 8-under 205 heading into Sunday's final round. He moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard during Saturday's round.

"I didn't really have any expectations of myself today, and I was able to go out and play free and focused golf," Brown said. "I was pretty much on cruise control today. I wish I could have more days like this when golf just feels really easy. It was a lot of fun."

Chris Gotterup leads the tournament at 18-under.

Brown opened with a 1-over 72 on Thursday and shot a 4-under 67 on Friday to get to 3-under and make the cut, which was at 2-under.

It's been a crazy week for Brown, who has been signing autographs, including one fan's forehead.

"He took off his hat and was like, have you ever signed a forehead before?" Brown said. "I was like, no. I thought he was kidding, but I've signed like four shoes, so I'm keeping tally. But everything is awesome."

Why Blades Brown, 16, is playing in PGA Tour event at Myrtle Beach Classic

Brown  received a sponsor exemption  to play in Myrtle Beach this week while the PGA Tour’s main event, the Wells Fargo Championship, is being played in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the top-ranked golfer in the Class of 2026, No. 4 in the AJGA rankings and No. 176 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

BLADES BROWN MAKES CUT: How Blades Brown, 16, rallied to make the cut in PGA Tour debut at Myrtle Beach Classic

He became the second consecutive 16-year-old to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sponsored event.  England’s Kris Kim , 16, did so at last week's CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Miles Russell, 15, tied for 20th at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Lecom Suncoast Classic last month.

Brown was asked if his expectations changed after Saturday's round.

"Probably not," he said. "Yes, it would be nice to shoot another 5-under or 6-under. It could happen. But I'm 16 playing in a PGA Tour event, so I'm just stoked to be here."

Blades Brown's mother is Rhonda Blades Brown, former Vanderbilt, WNBA player

Brown's mother is Rhonda Blades Brown, a former Vanderbilt women's basketball player and WNBA New York Liberty star and she helped motivate him to make the cut before Friday's round.

His exemption at Myrtle Beach stems from his record-breaking performance in last summer’s U.S. Amateur. He broke Bobby Jones’ record as the youngest medalist in U.S. Amateur history, tying for first place in the tournament's stroke play portion. Brown was eliminated in the match play portion in the round of 32 but earned recognition as one of the nation's top rising stars.

He became a client of Sportfive sports marketing agency and now has NIL deals with Callaway and New Jersey-based Transcend Capital Advisors.

Brown has won three consecutive TSSAA Division II-AA individual titles and last season set the Tennessee Junior Amateur Championship record for the lowest score in tournament history, finishing 22-under in 54 holes.
