Beautiful tour
The trip was great. Beautiful locations to visit and the premium bus trip was the best. Our only minor comment is that the tour guide was very soft spoken, not as entertaining as other guides we've had. She had knowledge and was nice, just a bit meek.
Thanks for sharing your great feedback with us. We are glad you had a wonderful experience.
The tour was very interesting and educational. Monika was full of information and history. We loved both stops and just wish we had more time. Johann was a safe and smooth driver.
Tour is very nice. However, we were always stressed about the time. Maybe it would best to do less stops so that people can enjoy without stressing.
Easy to use. However if you do the round trip it doesn’t give you two tickets and it doesn’t work on the return trip. So you have to pay again We didn’t have to cause the bus driver was late and trusted that we paid. It’s not a great system, once the ticket is scanned once it doesn’t allow you to scan it again. Bus comes every 20 minutes
The tour felt too rushed. Make sure you pack food because there isn’t much time to stop and eat. Make sure you are extremely punctual. Germans have no mercy. On the way to the pickup location we couldn’t find an Uber ride because it was rush hour. Then the route had a street blocked off so we had to exit the car and run for 2 blocks. We got to the pickup location 4 minutes late and the bus had already left. We were able to convince another tour bus that was heading to the same place to give us a ride to the first tour stop so that we could connect with our tour. They charged us 50 Euros each but at least we didn’t miss our entire day.
Boarding the bus was a bit of a clustered mess but nonetheless, we got on the bus and hit the road relatively on time. We were lucky to have really great weather. My wife and I enjoyed the stop at Linderhof. It has really beautiful grounds and was amazing inside. I wish there was a little bit more time at this stop to walk the grounds. Neuschwanstein castle was beautiful. We are fortunate that we could choose to walk up to the castle. There are stops along the way that you can stop for snacks. The cafes and shops at the bottom are very busy and no one had mentioned that there were restaurants and cafes on the walk up to the castle - this would have been helpful and saved some time. Overall this experience was as expected. Drinks were offered on-board for a very fair price. Make sure you have some cash with you for this option and just generally for your day. Lastly, I was aware that the classic/basic package we chose did not include entry tickets- this was no problem but interestingly the posted ticket prices at the gates were substantially less than the price we paid to the tour company. I'm not sure why this is. Someone had mentioned something about a reservation fee? In total we paid €33 each on the bus on the day of, this is advertised when booking the tour. The posted price at Linderhof was €9 and Neuschwanstein was €14 , I believe.

Review: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Royal Castle & Oberammergau Tour From Munich [Gray Line] (Munich, Germany)
Although it was Oktoberfest that brought me to Munich, I had no intention of missing the other main attractions of Bavaria.
Chief on my list was Neuschwanstein Castle.

About The Gray Line Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Royal Castle & Oberammergau Tour From Munich
The tour I selected was the Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Royal Castle & Oberammergau Tour From Munich by Gray Line tours.
This tour had a great itinerary and visited several major sites in Bavaria.
The 10.5 hour full-day trip picked-up in Munich and featured an air-conditioned bus with a tour guide.

Map Of The Sites On The Tour
From left to right: Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau, Linderhof Castle, Munich
The Drive Through Bavaria
Leaving Munich, we drove south on the infamous Autobahn freeway for a ways, before exiting the roadway and heading west into the mountains along the Austrian border.
Tour Stop #1: Linderhof Palace
The first stop was Linderhof Palace. This palace was an 1870’s project by King Ludwig II built on the property where his father’s (King Maximillan II) own castle once stood.
Heavily influenced by King Louis XIV’s Versailles castle in France, this would be the smallest of King Ludwig II’s three castles (including Neuschwanstein), and the only one that he lived to see the completion of.
Note: Although the inside of the castle was quite immaculate, photos were not allowed.
Tourists in the queue to get in
Tour Stop #2: Oberammergau
The town of Oberammergau is most famous for its Christian-themed “Passion Play” which is held every ten years (on every year that ends in zero).
The town is also famous for its woodcarving (Cuckoo-clocks), and the frescos painted on several buildings inspired by the many infamous Bavarian fairy-tales, such as Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, and Little Red Riding Hood.
Tour Stop #3: Neuschwanstein Castle
Upon arrival in the town of Hohenschwangau, we were told about the two options to get to Neuschwanstein Castle: Make the long uphill trek on our own (free), or hire a horse carriage (pay), before being turned loose to eat lunch, see the town, and visit the Castle on our own.
Image: Thomas Wolf
The Town of Hohenschwangau
I opted to eat lunch at Hotel Alpenstuben’s aptly named restaurant, “Restaurant Alpenstuben”, which was an excellent choice for both the food and the beer.

The Walk Up The Hill
After lunch, I made the long trek up the hill to several incredible viewpoints of Bavaria.
Although this walk was only a distance of 1.5 km, it was up a steep hill in the mountains and took me about 40 minutes to make the trek to the castle.
There was a possible side-trip to the Queen Mary’s Bridge (said to provide the best view of Neuschanstein Castle), but the line to the bridge had a wait time of two hours.
Being that I only had 1.5 hours left to tour the castle and hike back down to the bus, this was [sadly] impossible.
Arrival At Neuschwanstein Castle
Upon arrival, I handed in my ticket and in turn received an automated entrance number and time (conveniently posted on an electronic board).
After only about a 5 minute wait, I was let inside to join the next tour. A tour guide greeted us and then began the tour through the [unfinished] castle.
Neuschwanstein Castle was built by King Ludwig II as his personally-financed [intended] residence and retreat in honor of Richard Wagner.
The king died before its completion, but the Castle was opened to the public by the late 1880’s.
Today, the castle is said to be the direct inspiration for many of the famous Disney castles (especially Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland), and is one of the most visited destinations in all of Europe, visited by nearly 1.5 million people every year.
View of Queen Mary’s Bridge
The Drive Back To Munich
The drive back to Munich was most serene.
To be honest, I was asleep almost instantly and awoke back in Munich.
The Bottom-Line Review: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Royal Castle & Oberammergau Tour From Munich [Gray Line] (Munich, Germany)
This was a great tour.
Bavaria is even more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. At once rugged and manicured, it was easy to see why this place is so highly featured in European folklore.
All three attractions were worthwhile and stunningly beautiful.
The Bottom-Line Review: Highly Recommended! The Gray Line tour was easy, affordable and worthwhile!

Tour Review Munich: Gray Line Tours
Posted by Valerie Stewart | Advice , Around The World , Destinations , Europe , Germany , Munich , Resources , Travel | 0 |
Sometimes you encounter a city that is so jam packed with things to see and do that you hardly know where to begin. That’s the case with the delightful city of Munich . Fortunately, there is a way to see all the major points of interest, without having to stress over how to organize it all.
We’ve all sat through the recorded information that bores people to tears on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour. The information is fed to you through an ear piece, if it’s working, and then you’re left to wonder what’s been left out and wish you could ask someone directly about particular points that interested you. But there’s no one there but the driver, who may or may not speak your language.
Gray Line Tours was a refreshing change. Everything was streamlined and the tour ran like a well-oiled machine. The bus rolled on in a timely manner to all the places on our list, while a very knowledgeable guide told us information about places we were passing as well as the places we would soon visit. She answered questions for us about the tour bus operations and any other little questions we could come up with about the city and tourist attractions. This was extremely helpful as we had a limited time and wanted to make the most of it. Since we both love European history, having someone we could get facts from was welcome part of our time in Munich.
As guests of the Munich Tourism Board or, München Tourismus as is it official called, we were so excited to get tickets to Gray Line Tours Grand Circle tour, which visits virtually every touristy area in the city.
We decided that to get the most of our experience, we would take the tour around in a complete circle, listen to all of the information uninterrupted, and then choose the specific places to “hop-off” at during our second time around.
This plan worked out great for us and we enjoyed getting to glean as much information about the city as we could before getting out and about at the sites of interest.
All in all, we can highly recommend Gray Line Tours in Munich. We very much enjoyed getting to see the city from the open top of the tour bus, get some extra information and avoid losing precious time by having everything organized for us. If you have the opportunity, please check Gray Line out in any city. You won’t regret it!

Use the opportunity to hop off the bus and hop back on from 15 scheduled stops unlimited times, to the hilt. The 2-day Munich trip is meticulously linked with three distinct routes or bus lines that traverse through 11 different stops.
