Today's tour brings you to Kilkenny , capital of Ireland in the Middle Ages, seat of the medieval Irish parliaments, and lifelong rival to Dublin. Kilkenny's origins date back more than 1,500 years. The great architectural skill of the Normans is very evident in the 11th- and 12th-century buildings they bestowed on the city.

Magnificent Kilkenny Castle began life as a Norman fortress and gradually became more domesticated through the centuries. A self-guided visit introduces you its splendid antiquities and the stories its historic walls contain. The picture gallery includes portraits by Van Dyck and Lely.

The 13th-century Cathedral of St Canice is the second-longest cathedral in Ireland. In 1650, Oliver Cromwell did his best to wreck the cathedral by stabling his horses within, smashing the font and windows, and throwing out the monuments and tombs. But the cathedral has been carefully restored and is now quite beautiful.

Enjoy a traditional Irish lunch at a local pub.

You will have free time to visit the well-proportioned 18th-century buildings opposite the castle, which have been converted into an imaginative enterprise called the Kilkenny Design Centre . Local artists produce high-quality crafts here and a large retail outlet offers some of the finest goods on sale in Ireland. This is an attractive place to do some shopping and most items are uniquely handcrafted.

The return journey to Dunmore East takes you through some lush, green countryside. Take photos in the quaint village of Inistioge. This charming town with a tree-lined square lies in a pretty part of the Nore Valley, where the river winds between wooded banks flanked by hills. It has been the location for numerous movies, including Widow's Peak and Circle of Friends .

By knbbs-sharer

cruise holidays kilkenny

Are you looking for a unique way to explore Kilkenny? A cruise holiday might just be what you’re after. Located in the heart of Ireland, Kilkenny boasts a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and warm, welcoming locals. Here’s a guide to help you discover the best cruise holidays in Kilkenny.

Why Choose a Cruise Holiday in Kilkenny?

Cruise holidays offer a wide range of benefits for travelers. First and foremost, they allow you to see different destinations in a short amount of time. With a cruise holiday in Kilkenny, you can explore multiple towns and cities along the River Nore. Plus, you can enjoy all the amenities of a luxury vessel while taking in beautiful views of the countryside.

Top Cruise Holidays in Kilkenny

1. The Nore Explorer

The Nore Explorer is a popular choice for travelers looking for a river cruise experience. This six-hour journey takes you through some of the most picturesque spots in Kilkenny. You’ll pass through the medieval city of Kilkenny, the idyllic village of Inistioge, and the stunning Woodstock Estate. The boat has an on-board bar and a live commentary, providing you with a fun and informative experience.

2. The Spirit of Kilkenny

The Spirit of Kilkenny is another great option for cruising the River Nore. This luxury barge can accommodate up to 12 guests and provides a unique, intimate experience of the waterway. Highlights of the journey include passing under the historic John’s Bridge and visiting the charming village of Bennettsbridge.

3. The Grand Canal

If you’re interested in exploring more of the Irish countryside, the Grand Canal cruise might be right for you. This seven-day journey takes you through Kilkenny, as well as other scenic locations like Athy and Tullamore. You’ll see historic castles and tranquil canals, and enjoy delicious Irish cuisine along the way.

Tips for Planning Your Cruise Holiday in Kilkenny

Before booking your cruise holiday in Kilkenny, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the time of year you’ll be traveling. The peak season for cruising in Ireland is between May and September, when the weather is warm and the scenery is green. However, shoulder seasons like April and October can provide more affordable rates and fewer crowds.

Second, research the different cruise operators and vessels available in Kilkenny. Compare prices, amenities, and itineraries to find the best fit for your needs and preferences. Finally, don’t forget to pack accordingly for your trip. Kilkenny weather can be unpredictable, so bring layers and a waterproof jacket to ensure a comfortable experience.

A cruise holiday in Kilkenny can be an unforgettable way to experience all that this beautiful region has to offer. From exploring historic landmarks to enjoying the natural beauty of the River Nore, there’s something for everyone on a Kilkenny cruise. By following these tips and choosing the right cruise operator, you can create a truly memorable trip.

The guidance videos and handover from the team had us well prepared for the trip. Despite a few days of rain at the start of our trip we had an excellent time and would highly recommend this type of holiday with Carrickcraft.

Gary Topping

The members of your team in Carrick are simply the highlight of your company. Everyone of them was very kind, helpful and customer-oriented. It was a pleasure to meet them.

Roland Dotterweich

Morgan and his team were fantastic. Very helpful, full of knowledge and great advice. We thoroughly enjoyed our time aboard and look forward to our next adventure!

New cruise line offers ‘unlimited’ holidays at sea – and it’s cheaper than buying a home

A life at sea beckons on a new cruise line setting sail later this month, with a one-off payment for unlimited voyages around the globe.

US -based Villa Vie Residences, which describes itself as “a leading innovator in modern-day residential cruising” has revealed its ‘Endless Horizons’ programme, which gives a guarantee of a cabin aboard Villa Vie Odyssey .

There is no limit to the amount of time that passengers can stay on the ship and it’s an all-inclusive package with some excursions thrown in when the ship docks at destinations across the globe.

Passengers don’t have to live on board the entire time – the only stipulation is that 30 days’ notice must be given before rejoining.

The package costs $299,999 (£236,980) for single occupancy and $499,999 (£394,965) for two in an ‘Outside Cabin’.

And although the concept is promoted as “transforming the concept of retirement”, the company confirmed to The Independent that there is no minimum age to purchase the package.

By comparison, the average price of a studio flat in London is around £315,000, according to Property London – without the added benefit of seeing the world.

Friends and family can join the residents on the cruise at a cost of $129 (£102) a day.

The ship, which is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment in Belfast, was built in 1993 and has sailed for a number of different cruise lines, including Cunard (as Crown Dynasty ) and most recently Fred Olsen Cruise Lines as Braemar . In 2019, while carrying her full capacity of 929 passengers, she became the longest ship ever to cruise through the Corinth Canal in Greece .

The plan is for Villa Vie Odyssey to constantly sail around the world, with its inaugural cruise – lasting three-and-a-half years, visiting all seven continents with stops in more than 425 ports in 147 countries – due to depart on 30 May. It was originally due to set sail on 15 May.

“Our goal is to offer a seamless solution for those looking to retire on a fixed budget to never worry about ongoing expenses again,” said Mikael Petterson, chief executive officer of Villa Vie Residences.

"This is more than just a travel opportunity; it’s a new way of life. For less than the price of an average home, you can secure a lifetime of experiences.”

According to the terms and conditions of the programme, this purchase will be a minimum of 15 years, the company states, which will be at least four circumnavigations of the world, but guarantees accommodation for “the entire operational life of the ship”.

The maiden voyage of Villa Vie Odyssey comes months after would-be passengers were left stranded when a three-year cruise was cancelled just weeks before it was scheduled to depart.

The once-in-a-lifetime experience was called-off by operator Life at Sea just two weeks before it was set to sail due to a lack of ship availability, leaving some passengers homeless .

Prior to the planned cruise, Kimberly Arizzi sold her entire apartment, all her clothes and furniture to pay for the trip, which she had hoped would kick off her retirement.

Widow left ‘crying her eyes out’ after being stuck alone on cruise with ‘vomiting bug’ after husband’s death

Jill and Andrew Bond who are on the P&O Cruises Ventura ship allegedly hit by vomiting bug norovirus.

A widow was left in tears after being hit by a ‘vomiting bug’ on a P&O cruise she took alone for the first time since her husband’s death.

The woman in her 70s is one of hundreds of holidaymakers who allegedly became ill after a norovirus outbreak on P&O Cruises Ventura ship.

Being ill and alone on her first solo cruise is ‘soul-destroying,’ she told Metro.co.uk .

Jill Bond, 67, from Coventry, is also on the latest two-week cruise around Canary Islands with her husband Andrew Bond, 59.

She suffers from COPD so the ‘violent’ vomiting left he ‘quite worried’ as she threw up after using her inhaler.

Jill and Andrew Bond who are on the P&O Cruises Ventura ship allegedly hit by vomiting bug norovirus.

‘If I had the chance I would fly this morning, but I don’t want to give it to anyone else. I don’t want to spread it and sitting on a plane you can easily give it to other,’ she said.

Guests and crew have allegedly been affected for more than a month after a persistent bug that remains on the ship.

More than 150 guests isolated on board the latest cruise that left the UK on May 11, a source has alleged.

They told Metro.co.uk there have been 250 suspected cases of the vomiting bug in the last four days, with guests allegedly ‘throwing up in public spaces’ around the ship.

P&O Cruises said previously it implemented its ‘approved and enhanced’ sanitisation protocols after reports of ‘guests with gastrointestinal symptoms.’

The widow, who asked not to be named, said she isolated in her cabin alone for more than two days after getting ill with the bug on Wednesday, with staff bringing her food and water cans as she struggled with diarrhoea and vomiting.

Her cabin is still full of unsanitary rubbish and sheets unchanged as the cabin has not been cleaned for four days despite end her isolation on Friday, she claims.

More than 250 passengers 'vomitting from bug' after norovirus outbreak on cruise

She described the moment she was allowed to go out of her cabin: ‘I sat in a corner and cried my eyes out. I feel vulnerable sitting there. You should not feel like that when you’re on holiday.

‘It was my first P&O cruise and last, absolutely.’

The woman said it had been ‘difficult’ for her to make the trip ‘as it’s my first cruise, on my own, since losing my beloved husband in May 2022.’

The couple had been on four cruises and ‘used to fly all over as well.’

She paid around £3,000 for the cruise.

The 14-day voyage from Southampton around the Canary Islands has turned into a nightmare as ‘more and more people get sick,’ the source claimed.

But some guests ‘have left the ship to fly home,’ a source alleged.

More than 250 passengers 'vomitting from bug' after norovirus outbreak on cruise

Another woman, who is on the cruise with her 85-year-old mum who has underlying health conditions, said the pair are two ‘frightened’ to leave their cabin on the £4,400 trip in case they get ill.

She claimed ‘no one from P&O’ has been in touch and people are let go ‘off the ship to towns and cities spreading this virus.’

Andrew, a personal injury lawyer, said there was no ‘self-service anywhere’ and tables are being sprayed and wiped down after guests.

But he claimed he had seen people ‘refuse’ to use the hand sanitisation units and ‘still be allowed into food service areas so enforcement of the protection measures is poor to say the least.’

He continued: ‘Whatever steps they are taking on the Ventura are clearly not working and they really should have cancelled our cruise and should cancel all future cruises until they are absolutely certain that the norovirus has been eradicated.

‘If it has been on board for the past 4 or 6 weeks, it is clearly a problem with or on the ship and is nothing to do with the passengers because they change every 7 or 14 days but the norovirus is still there.’

While the mid-way of the cruise had been a ‘nightmare,’ Andrew and Jill were determined to make the ‘most of it’ as she was feeling better and slowly able to eat again.

Jill said the staff are ‘lovely’ and everyone is ‘helpful,’ but she could see the ‘look on their faces, they are not happy and cheerful like normally.’

‘They seem very strained,’ she added.

In letter sent on Thursday evening, captain James Brown offered £15 on-board credit to each guest to compensate for leaving the ship in Tenerife while it was cleaned.

The source at the ship said ‘this is a serious outbreak,’ saying the latest cruise was ‘the most we have had sick this time.’

‘We don’t know where it came from, it has been on board for a month maybe 5-6 weeks now and each cruise we think it has gone but more and more people get sick,’ they said.

Guests allegedly face a five-hour wait to call the ship’s medical centre because of ‘so many cases.’

They claimed that passengers have not received compensation.

All guests who contacted Metro said they planned to seek compensation.

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said in a statement on Saturday: ‘We are so sorry that these guests have been affected. Obviously it not what we would want for anyone on board as one of our highest priorities is always the wellbeing of everyone.

‘It is though important to note the  UK Health Security Agency  (UKHSA) has reported a current increase in cases across the U.K. as a whole.

‘We have approved sanitisation protocols and adopt a phased and proven approach .

‘These wide range of approved protocols include constant and enhanced sanitation across the ship with specialist teams, isolating those affected, serving the buffet (instead of self service), closing the launderettes but offering complimentary washing and pressing and more.’

A two-week cruise on Ventura around the Canaries starts from around £1,129.

When the ship was launched, it was one of the largest cruise ships on the British market, with 1,550 cabins.

Southampton City Council, which maintains port health in the city’s harbour, was contacted for a comment.

Eoin Cody goal wins it but Dublin take Kilkenny to the brink

Leinster SHC: Kilkenny 1-28 Dublin 2-23

Back to winning ways and back to the summit of the Leinster SHC for Kilkenny but this was anything but a return to business as usual for the Cats who lived on their wits at Parnell Park.

Dublin will be kicking themselves that they didn't claim a landmark win, the biggest of the Micheál Donoghue era, with the scores tied for the eighth time in the second half and almost 70 minutes played.

A terrific Eoin Cody goal, with about 20 seconds of normal time left, ultimately propelled Kilkenny to a badly needed win that will do all sorts of positive things for their mindset after last weekend's stumble against Carlow.

Truth be told, another draw probably would have been the fairest outcome but Derek Lyng's side aren't three-in-a-row champions for nothing and dug remarkably deep to mine out this win.

As a result, they have returned to the top of the provincial table and, with Wexford to come in Round 5 next weekend, will fancy their chances of staying there to secure a Leinster final place.

Cody finished with 1-3 but his heroics were outdone by John Donnelly who turned in perhaps his best game yet for Kilkenny, scoring seven points from play and hauling them to a hugely significant win.

TJ Reid top-scored for the Noresiders with eight points but only one of those came from play and he was surprisingly errant with a series of frees in the final quarter when the game hung in the balance.

As for Dublin, they will wonder just how victory eluded them in a game that was level nine times overall. Donal Burke scored 0-14 for the hosts while Conor Burke and Brian Hayes struck the goals that brought them within a whisker of a huge win.

Dublin will travel to play Galway in Round 5 next weekend knowing that a win will secure their place in the All-Ireland series.

Kilkenny boss Lyng was desperate for a strong response from his team following the surprising stalemate in Carlow.

He was able to call upon Cody and Mikey Carey for the first time since the Round 1 win over Antrim following injuries.

Captain Paddy Deegan shook off a knock to return to the lineup too, lining out in his customary centre-back slot while Tommy Walsh was recalled at corner-back.

The return of Ronan Hayes was the solitary change to the Dublin team, the Kilmacud Crokes rewarded for his thrilling cameo as a sub against Antrim last Saturday.

Hayes contributed directly to 2-3 in that 20-point win for the Sky Blues and would have netted in the 18th minute here but for a terrific flying save from Eoin Murphy.

Conor Burke was the unlikely goalscorer for Dublin and it was the only three-pointer of the opening half.

The midfielder burst onto a pass from Chris Crummey, played a neat one-two with Sean Currie and blasted beyond Murphy at the clubhouse end of the ground.

That 35th minute goal left Dublin just a point behind and it remained that way at half-time with Kilkenny leading 0-16 to 1-12.

The Cats were four clear at one stage and led from Reid's fifth-minute point until the 39th minute.

Reid finished the first half with five points and forward colleague Donnelly sniped four beauties from play.

Crummey was terrific for Dublin in the half-back line while Donal Burke and Danny Sutcliffe were the chief threats up front for the Sky Blues.

The thrill-a-minute ride continued in the second half with the sides level four times in a high-paced back and forth.

Kilkenny may have presumed their superior stickwork would prevail if it came down to a battle in the tight confines of Parnell Park but Dublin matched them stride for stride, blow for blow.

And when Eoghan O'Donnell burst forward and fed Brian Hayes for a 55th-minute goal, moving Dublin 2-20 to 0-23 clear, the home fans almost lost their mind.

Kilkenny were rattled and Reid blasted two wides from frees that he'd normally convert.

Dublin couldn't hold out though and were slowly but surely reeled in, Kilkenny levelling up the game on three more occasions before Cody blasted that all-important goal.

Kilkenny scorers: TJ Reid 0-8 (0-7f), John Donnelly 0-7, Eoin Cody 1-3, Martin Keoghan 0-3, David Blanchfield 0-3, Cian Kenny 0-2, Mikey Carey 0-1, Billy Ryan 0-1.

Dublin scorers: Donal Burke 0-14 (0-10f, 0-1 65), Conor Burke 1-1, Brian Hayes 1-0, Danny Sutcliffe 0-3, Chris Crummey 0-3, Cian O'Sullivan 0-2.

KILKENNY: Eoin Murphy; Tommy Walsh, Huw Lawlor, Mikey Butler; David Blanchfield, Paddy Deegan, Mikey Carey; Shane Murphy, Cian Kenny; Tom Phelan, TJ Reid John Donnelly; Martin Keoghan, Eoin Cody, Owen Wall.

Subs: Billy Ryan for Wall h/t, Richie Reid for S Murphy 42, Conor Fogarty for Phelan 59, Cillian Buckley for Carey 69.

DUBLIN: Sean Brennan; John Bellew, Eoghan O'Donnell, Paddy Smyth; Chris Crummey, Conor Donohoe, Paddy Doyle; Brian Hayes, Conor Burke; Danny Sutcliffe, Donal Burke, Fergal Whitely; Sean Currie, Cian O'Sullivan, Ronan Hayes.

Tui earns record revenue with prices for cruises soaring

Demand for holidays rising inexorably – but mallorca hotel chief warns of ‘critical situation’ with overtourism, article bookmarked.

Post-pandemic demand for travel appears unstoppable, with Europe’s biggest holiday company revealing record revenue for the first three months of 2024.

A total of 2.8 million customers paid an average of 3 per cent more for their holidays in the quarter compared with a year earlier, taking revenue to €3.6bn (£3.1bn).

The Canary Islands and Egypt were the most popular package holiday destinations between January and March, with demand for Cape Verde – the Portuguese-speaking archipelago off the west coast of Africa “increasing further”.

Demand was particularly strong for Tui ’s cruise ships. The average daily rate rose by one-fifth to €221 (£190), while the number of empty cabins fell by three-quarters; on average 49 out of 50 are filled on the company’s vessels.

The quarterly loss fell by 22 per cent to €189m (£162m); Tui traditionally loses money in winter.

With planes flying 93 per cent full, the prediction for the full financial year is that profits will rise by 25 per cent.

Bookings for the summer are 5 per cent higher than 2023, with prices 4 per cent higher despite increasing competition from online travel agents and easyJet’s holiday operation.

“Travelling is very popular,” said Tui’s chief executive, Sebastian Ebel. “We are seeing high demand for package holidays , in particular.”

The company’s results statement said: “Tui continues to closely monitor geopolitical events, particularly in the Middle East and on the Arabian Peninsula.

“Should the situation or customer demand change, the Group’s business model allows it to flexibly shift capacity from the Eastern to the Western Mediterranean.”

The company would, if necessary, shift some of its flights from Turkey to Spain.

But the Tui announcement came hours after a leading tourism figure on the Spanish island of Mallorca said a “strategic plan” was needed to tackle overtourism .

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that Maria Frontera, president of the Mallorca Hoteliers’ Federation, said the Balearic Islands are “in a critical situation”.

“Seeking a balance of coexistence between residents and visitors has long been an issue on these islands,” she said.

Tui insists it “operates organised package tourism that does not impact local living spaces”.
