Castle Ghost Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Take the Kids Exploring at These Real-Life Castles Around Ohio

Plan a road trip to one of these family-friendly architectural gems, which feature suits of armor, elaborate gardens and medieval touches along with scavenger hunts and children’s activities..

The Castle in Marietta

Few things inspire the imagination more than castles. The medieval ambiance, castellated turrets and knights’ armor can make anyone—especially children—mesmerized just thinking of a world where kings and queens lived among grand fortifications and gardens.

But castles don’t just exist in Europe. Those willing to take a road trip can find more than a dozen impressive replicas of real castles right here in Ohio.

Most of these architectural wonders are within a few hours’ drive of Columbus. Some now operate as inns and limit access to guests, but others allow visitors to tour the grounds for free or a small fee.

Exploring castles and medieval history can make for a fun family outing. Here are some of the top spots that will appeal to both children and adults.

Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek

10051 Township Road 47, West Liberty; 937-465-2821; piattcastle.org

One of the most educational castles in Ohio is the Gothic-designed Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek in Logan County. This castle is nice for families because it is free to visit the grounds and is self-guided. The privately owned estate has 200 years of Ohio history and inspires visitors to ask questions about their own family trees.

Piatt Castle has scavenger hunts for different age levels and reproductions of old toys that kids can play with outside. Families are encouraged to be hands-on as they explore the gardens, touch the stone walls and take notice of details such as wood carvings and ceiling paintings. The popular outdoor limestone doghouse has a mural that depicts dogs that lived at the estate over the centuries.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends from Sept. 11 to Oct. 31; reopens in spring

Cost: Free for castle grounds and outdoor exhibits; home and indoor exhibits are $13 for adults, $7 for children ages 5-15

Loveland Castle

12075 Shore Drive, Loveland; 513-683-4686; lovelandcastle.com

The historic Loveland Castle and Museum Chateau Laroche is a fun place to learn about the history of knighthood and the Knights of the Golden Trail, which started as a scouting group founded by the castle’s owner, Harry Delos Andrews. The castle sits near the Little Miami River, so it is an ideal place to take a picnic lunch and spend a few hours. The castle features activities, games and special events for visitors. The gardens are a must-see with flowers, statues and an herb garden replicated from the 10th century.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Oct. 31, then Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 1 to March 31

Cost: $5 for ages 6 and older

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

714 N. Portage Path, Akron; 330-836-5533; stanhywet.org

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens was designed after a centuries-old English castle. The home is a Tudor Revival Manor House with 65 rooms, more than 70 acres of manicured gardens and a conservatory. A fun way to see the estate with kids is with Joe’s Adventure Guide (available from admissions), which has activities children can do as they explore the historic home.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 1 to Dec. 30

Cost: Self-guided tours are $15 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-17. Outdoor tours and special event tickets also are available.

Plan a visit around one of the programs happening at The Castle throughout the year or make it part of a longer day in the Marietta area.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays and 1-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through the end of the year; open seasonally April through December

The Brumback Library

215 W. Main St., Van Wert; 419-238-2168; brumbacklib.com

The Brumback Library in Van Wert offers an educational day out where visitors can enjoy the castle-like building’s history and architecture and also find a good book to read. The public library was built in the late 1800s, paying homage to John Sanford Brumback, a local philanthropist and businessman. The architecture is Gothic and Romanesque with distinctive turreted towers defining its appearance. Be sure to explore the grounds and plan the day so you can attend one of the storytimes held in the children’s area weekly from October to April.

Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays

Ravenwood Castle

65666 Bethel Road, New Plymouth; 740-596-2606; ravenwoodcastle.com

Ravenwood Castle is tucked away in the Hocking Hills region. It was inspired by the 12th- and 13th-century castles that the original owners visited on a trip to the border of Wales and England. Ravenwood now operates as an inn and is the backdrop for events including family-friendly scavenger hunts and themed dinners.

The grounds and events are available only to guests staying on-site. Families can spend a weekend in a themed room in the castle or at one of the property’s cottages, cabins or rustic gypsy wagons. Inside the castle’s Great Hall, the large dining tables, stained glass windows and a mural of medieval battles depicts the grand majesty and allure of the times. Kids also will enjoy the oversized chess set on the lawn.

Loveland Castle in Ohio

The Loveland Castle was built by Harry Delos Andrews who acquired the land in the 1920s. Harry modeled the castle as a full scale replica of those he visited during his travels in Europe after serving in World War I.

While you’re there, you might notice knights guarding the castle. These guards are part of the Knights of the Golden Trail, named after Harry’s childhood Boy Scout troop where the land and idea for the Loveland Castle all began. Upon Harry’s death in 1981, he willed the castle to these Knights who carry on its tradition to this day!

Tours of the castle are self-guided, but you’re welcome to ask questions about its history to the knight on duty. Are there any unique castles in Ohio?

Squire’s Castle at North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby is an abandoned castle in Ohio because its construction was never finished. This makes it quite unique compared to many others. Today, the public can explore what is left of the incomplete structure. There is a 2.2-mile loop trail that leads right to the castle. Additionally, two more to add to the list of unique castles in Ohio to visit are the Mac-A-Cheek Castle and Mac-O-Chee Castle. These Ohio castles date all the way back to the mid-1800s and now are private family-owned museums full of Ohio history. We recommend these two unique castles not just for the museums, but because the architecture is special, too.

What is the largest castle in Ohio?

It is also one of the largest homes in the U.S. An accredited museum of the American Alliance of Museums, this estate is open to the public for tours and other events and features five historic buildings, eight gardens, and 70 acres. Visitors looking to explore the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens can do so along our Castles Of Ohio Road Trip. Featuring the best castles in Ohio to visit, the Stan Hywet Hall is the very first stop of this road trip adventure, which then takes guests to six other castles as well.

Are there any haunted castles in Ohio?

Yes, there are haunted castles in Ohio , Landoll's Mohican Castle, and the Hannes Tiedemann house, better known as Franklin Castle. These Ohio castles are rumored to be haunted, each with a unique story. The Landoll's Mohican Castle's history dates back to the 1800s. The land in which the castle sits is said to have once been a church with a cemetery. The cemetery burned down, not once, but twice after being rebuilt. Some believe the land of the original church is cursed and the curse extended onto the new castle that is now on the property. Additionally, Franklin Castle is said to be the single most haunted house in Ohio. The first reported haunting dates back to 1968. However, the castle itself was built in 1881. With at least six confirmed tragic deaths within the walls from that time, it’s no wonder people have reported various hauntings and ghostly spirits.

14 Real Castles Right Here In Ohio (Many Of Which You Can Visit)

' src=

When people think about castles, they don’t think about Ohio.

Most would picture crumbling medieval castles of the English Countryside, or perhaps the stunning chateaus of 18th century France.

Although Ohio’s castles may not all have been built centuries ago, they are still marvelous in their own right. While some were created simply as tourist attractions, several were built out of curiosity and ingenuity.

Loveland Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

Construction on Chateau Laroche, aka Loveland Castle, began in 1929. World War I veteran and medievalist Harry D. Andrews was so inspired by his time in France during the war, that when he returned to Loveland, Ohio, he decided to build his own castle. He spent nearly 50 years constructing Chateau Laroche, and when he died, he gifted it to his Boy Scout troop, the Knights of the Golden Trail.

Squire’s Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

Squire’s Castle was built in the 1890s, by oil tycoon, Fergus Squire. Initially intended as a gate house to a much larger estate, Squire sold the property before the estate could be built. Now owned by the Cleveland Metroparks, the castle is free and open to the public.

Mac-A-Cheek Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

Built by French Huguenot immigrants, the Piatt Castles are some of the most well known chateaus in Ohio. Mac-A-Cheek, built by Abram Piatt was completed in 1871. Though it is slightly smaller than Mac-O-Chee, its secluded grounds give it an air of mystery.

Mac-O-Chee Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

The second Piatt Castle, Mac-O-Chee, is slightly larger than its partner. Completed in 1879, Mac-O-Chee was built by Don Piatt. Mac-O-Chee has towers, elaborate painted ceilings, and towers, just as you’d expect to find in the grandest castles of Europe.

GreatStone Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

The GreatStone Castle Resort, also known as the Whitby Mansion, was built in 1890 by W.H.C. Goode. Goode, an industrialist, built the castle with massive stone walls, slate roofs, and combined architectural styles such as Jacobean, Tudor and Châteauesque. The castle is now a bed and breakfast, popular for weddings.

Ravenwood Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

If you’re looking for the perfect place to host your Game of Thrones Reenactment dinner or a rousing game of Dungeons and Dragons, look no further. Although only completed in 1995, Ravenwood Castle was built in the style of the 12th and 13th century castles that dotted the British countryside. The original owners were self proclaimed Anglophiles, and wanted a special place here in Ohio where people could be transported through time. Ravenwood hosts events all year long, including murder mysteries and themed weekends.

Landoll’s Mohican Castle

castle tours bucyrus ohio

Built in 2002, Landoll’s Mohican Castle captures the mystery and elegance that most are looking for in a castle. Also a hotel, the castle is a popular destination for weddings, events, and romantic weekend getaways. Couples can even reserve the Landoll Suite, which gives them access to their very own tower. How very royal!

The Castle in Marietta

One of the oldest castles on the list, The Castle in Marietta was built in 1855. The Gothic Revival style castle has been open to the public since 1994, acting as a museum. The aim of the museum is to preserve the grounds of the castle, as well as the facility itself, ensuring that generations of Ohioans can have access to this unique building.

Glamorgan Castle

The Glamorgan Castle in Alliance, Ohio was completed in 1909 for roughly $400,000 by Col. William Henry Morgan. In addition to the castle, the nearly grounds included a farm, a farmhouse, a barn, and a carriage shed.  The Early Settlement area  c onsisting of Newcom Tavern (Dayton’s oldest standing building, ca. 1796), the William Morris House (ca. 1815), the Hetzel Summer Kitchen (1817), Newcom House (ca. 1841), the Watervliet Shaker Building (ca. 1819), and Locust Grove School No. 12 (1896), Carillon Historical Park’s Early Settlement Area recalls the early days of Dayton—a city that would grow and evolve to eventually change the world.

The John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers National Museum has more Wright artifacts on display than any other place in the world, including the 1905 Wright Flyer III: the only airplane designated a National Historic Landmark, the first practical flying machine, and what the Wright brothers considered their most important aircraft.

Referred to as “the first pilot’s last project,” preserving the 1905 Wright Flyer III for Carillon Historical Park was Orville Wright’s last major project before he died on January 30, 1948. And while Orville died before Carillon Park was opened in 1950, he had a hand in designing Wright Hall—the building that houses the 1905 Wright Flyer III.

Adjacent to Wright Hall is—a replica of Wilbur and Orville’s fifth and final store at 1127 W. Third St. in West Dayton. In 1936, with Orville’s endorsement, Henry Ford purchased the original building, and in 1938, it was moved from 1127 W. Third Street and dedicated at Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Carillon Park’s cycle shop resembles how the Wright brothers’ store would have appeared between mid-October to mid-December 1901.

The Carillon Historical Park Print Shop is the nation’s only fully operational 1930s letterpress job shop in a museum. With authentic 1930s printing equipment and furnishings, the Print Shop harkens to a time when Dayton had 77 printing companies, ranging from one-person operations to McCall’s, which produced 4 million magazines daily, including Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Reader’s Digest, Redbook, and Popular Science.

By 1937, printing was the second largest industry in the United States. Due to the abundant water supply available, Dayton was heavily involved in the printing industry. In fact, as it was more cost-effective to print near the location of the paper mills, 25 of Ohio’s 36 paper mills were located right here in the Miami Valley.

The James F. Dicke Family Transportation Center houses the 1835 B&O #1, John Quincy Adams (the oldest existing American-built locomotive), a breathtaking Barney & Smith parlor railcar, an authentic Conestoga wagon, and many other exceptional transportation-themed artifacts.

Many chapters of transportation history are celebrated at Carillon Historical Park’s James F. Dicke Family Transportation Center—from our nation’s rail history to Ohio’s pioneer history to Dayton’s unique spot in claiming the oldest, continuously-operating, electrically-propelled public transit system. Designed to resemble both a train station and a roundhouse, the Transportation Center houses many of Carillon Historical Park’s original artifacts, and guests are welcome to walk through many of the artifacts on display.

The Great 1913 Flood Exhibit speaks to disaster, perseverance, and heroism. By bringing together numerous Flood-related artifacts, it tells the story of a grief-stricken city banding together to rise above adversity.

The History on the Hill Interpretive Center tells the story of the land on which Carillon Historical Park sits—its geological history, its settlement by the prehistoric Hopewell people, and its use as a segment of the Miami and Erie Canal. Featuring a number of exhilarating tunnel slides and the Archeology Adventure Zone, History on the Hill has become a popular spot for guests of all ages.

Complete with picturesque walking trails, wild flowers, idyllic shelters, historical artifacts, geological remnants, and a breathtaking bird’s eye view of Carillon Historical Park and the city of Dayton, the Moraine Trails are the Park’s best-kept-secret.
