Cassian Returning Home for One-Off Melbourne Headline Show

By Jules LeFevre

Local export Cassian will return home this year for a headlining set at Melbourne’s 170 Russell. The show, billed as the Great Southern Land tour, will take over the venue on Friday, 28th July.

The show comes off the back of the producer’s remake of Icehouse’s classic Australia track ‘Great Southern Land’, which was released earlier this month. Speaking on the remake, Cassian says he was “born with this song in my blood”.

Cassian: ‘Great Southern Land’

“I dreamed about making my own version for 10 years before reaching out to see if it was possible,” Cassian elaborated. “Having full approval from Iva Davies/ICEHOUSE and being involved with the legacy of this song is probably the greatest honor of my career thus far, one that I don’t take lightly.”

The producer says he spent a year slowly and carefully piecing the track together. “Around 100 versions later I’m proud to present the final, which I even mastered myself,” he explained. “Huge thank you to management, to Simon Moor & of course to Iva and his team for making the impossible possible.”

Cassian has been based in Los Angeles for a number of years now, after rising to fame in Sydney’s dance scene alongside friends like RÜFÜS DU SOL , Hayden James , and Golden Features . In recent years he’s notched up some big collaborations with dance heavyweights like Anyma and Elderbrook .

Expert Picks: PGA Championship

Expert Picks

Change Text Size

How it works: Each week, our experts from PGATOUR.COM will make their selections in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf. Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the PGA Championship in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Collin Morikawa (+2800) – I’ve been bullish on Morikawa for a few weeks now, and I’m sticking to my guns. The 2020 PGA champ is showing signs of promise once again after reuniting with longtime swing coach Rick Sessinghaus. Not afraid of the stage or moment.
  • Top 10: Denny McCarthy (+900) – McCarthy has quietly been playing well this year, highlighted by a playoff loss at the Valero Texas Open and T6 finish last week at Quail Hollow. I also love his form on burly layouts like Muirfield Village (playoff loss last year) which should be a good course comp to Valhalla.
  • Longshot: Sepp Straka (+9000) – The big Austrian was a runner-up last year at The Open and finished T7 at last year’s PGA. He’s strong off the tee and has finished T16 or better in each of his last four starts, including T8 last week.
  • Head-to-Head (H2H): Rory McIlroy (+135) over Scottie Scheffler – Hi, my name is Will and I’m fading Scheffler in a major. Please send help.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Rory McIlroy (+750) – I feel like I’ve been swept up on a bandwagon but Sunday forced my hand. For the last month I was setting up to pick Xander Schauffele here but he went and got obliterated by Rory at Quail and I fear that one will leave scars. A decade of woe ends here.
  • Top 10: Jason Day (+400) – You could take many other more conservative picks here that should pay but I’m going to back my mate at slightly juicier odds in the major he’s won while he is peaking at the right time.
  • Longshots: Jason Day (+5500) – See above. Jason has the length, the short (and shirt) game and the course history … let’s just hope his approach game is dialed in.
  • H2H: Rory McIlroy (+135) over Scottie Scheffler – Please send all trolling comments about me fading Scheffler again via Golfbet colleague Matty DelVecchio. He will enjoy it. But I’ve been a new dad before… your mind can’t help but be elsewhere at times. And McIlroy is +135!

CHRIS BREECE (Senior content manager, Golfbet)

  • Winner: Ludvig Åberg (+1800) – Everyone is waiting for his big breakout moment. If not for Scheffler, it would have happened at the Masters. On a course where driving the ball long and straight is the biggest key, Åberg has a serious chance to shine. He’s third in Total Driving.
  • Top 10: Collin Morikawa (+250) – I’m taking my same pick from last week ... and it looked good until the last three holes. Morikawa was in legit contention for two days at Quail Hollow. Ball-striking is paramount this week.
  • Longshot: Will Zalatoris (+6600) – I’m taking the same approach from the Masters when I picked Homa as a longshot (T3 finish). At +5000 and above, who has more talent than Zalatoris?
  • H2H: Shane Lowry (+105) over Russell Henley – Lowry’s last five PGA Championships have included finishes of T4/T8/T12. He tends to be at his best at the toughest courses.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Ludvig Åberg (+1800) – The hype becomes a reality this week where Åberg will break through and win his first major in only his second start. His game fits the course well and he showed a lot of calm down the stretch at Augusta National. I trust he’ll do the same this week, but this time take home the hardware.
  • Top 10: Brook Koepka (+150) – Mr. Wanamaker himself is ready to make a run again this year.
  • Longshot: Hideki Matsuyama (+5500) – Long approach shots being at a premium seems like a good situation for Matsuyama. If he can get the ball rolling on these green, we will see him late on Sunday.
  • H2H: Max Homa over Tommy Fleetwood (-110) – Homa has been in great form as of late and seems poised for another run at a major.

Caspian (formed in 2003) is an American experimental and post-rock band who released their debut double-disc album “The Four Trees” in 2007, hailing from Beverly, Massachusetts, U.S.

Originally comprised of guitarist and keyboard player Philip Jamieson, guitarist Calvin Joss, bassist Christ Friedrich, and drummer Joe Vickers, Caspian initially formed in 2003. After developing an early demo tape in which to sell at shows and send to labels, the group spent the majority of 2004 and 2005 on tour, opening for the likes of Japanese post-rock band Mono. Following a successful run of shows Caspian signed with Dopamine Records who issued the band’s debut EP “You Are the Conductor” in November 2005. In support of the record Caspian headed out on a modest tour of the North East before embarking on their debut national tour in April 2006.

Once again released on Dopamine Records, Caspian’s debut full-length album “The Four Trees” arrived in April 2007. Voted the No. 1 album of 2007 by The Silent Ballet, the record did wonders for the band's post-rock reputation as well as expanding their fan base beyond the genre. Guitarist Calvin Joss departed the band ahead of the supporting tour and was replaced by former The Fly-Agaris Sky member Erin Burke-Moran. Caspian’s sophomore album “Tertia” followed in August 2009, which, like its predecessor was recorded with Ethan Dussault at the production reigns. The record was followed by the band’s most extensive touring to date, with two huge European tours and a two-month North American tour.

In 2011 the band performed at the 2011 SXSW Festival before heading to Europe for an eight-day tour of Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands. Caspian’s third album “Walking Season” arrived in September 2012 and was promoted on tour in support of Minus the Bear. The live EP “Live at Old South Church” subsequently arrived in 2012, followed by the EP “Hymn For the Greatest Generation” in 2013.

Live reviews

"Waking Season"

Music is universal, and there are very few bands during this time that can effortlessly get their message across with little to no lyrics or vocals, Caspian is one of those bands.

Their music works for everything from driving while exploring the world around you, a bad breakup where you need to vent to find yourself again, or just the need to feel your chest tighten with emotion where breathing becomes a poetic gift. They cross seas and lands to reach a new height for their music, allowing their beauty to ring in your ears and mind as soon as you step out of the venue. I even told some of the band members this to show my appreciation and gratitude for making this music, music that held a line right through me.

Not just any silly twine, they sunk their line into a vast ocean of waves and I grabbed on by listening to 00034 / You Are The Conductor, the beginning of my instrumental journey; it was as tranquil as morning dew on a field of grass that reminds you, its all yours in those moments.

As years went onward I found delicate candles of flame lighting up the once vast space around me, as I found individuals at shows that were there on the same level of music appreciation talking about Caspian as well, a universal bliss. Lines can be crossed, spread, and found in other areas of the globe, from talking, feeling and enjoying those moments with others engulfed by the flowing music.

When you are at the next Caspian show and just as soon as you are feeling the music to take hold look around, and in that time just know it will feel natural to have your jaw suddenly open as you notice others just like yourself are in the same meditative trance you are in, now enjoy it.

Let's just say I missed out on my effort to see them for a second time as their show was Sold Out! It was bittersweet since I didn't see them perform, but I knew others who may have never seen them now had that privilege and enjoyment I had.

You all heard the records and now watch them live, trust me.

I am happy they are getting the recognition they deserve and I wish them the best on their journey of making the world enormously brighter and beautiful, and to all of you reading You Are The Conductor.

Thank You Caspian

Despite being delayed by TWO breakdowns on the road to Madrid AND getting told by the management to clear out early (boo!), Caspian blew the roof off. This was my first time seeing them after about two years of following them closely, and it was well worth the delays and the curtailed show.

You can expect to do a lot of head-banging to some of their music; it's got a badass metal vibe, just instrumental. What makes them unique, then, is their versatility, because some of their songs will leave you close to tears. The final song they performed was "Gone in Bloom and Bough," and it began with a minute-long recording of Bluebird, by Charles Bukowski. Bukowski concludes by asking us if we weep--and this 10+ minutes song is enough to do so. It starts and ends with a crescendo of guitars and ambient sounds--not quite like something Sigur Ros does occasionally, but not far off--and leaves you with chills. If you're new to post-rock and want to experience it in all its emotive ups and downs and gloriously undulating songs, Caspian is a great band to start with.

Most reviews are supposed to be enthusiastic, but I can't be. It's the second time I see Caspian and my feelings are more than mixed. On stage, the band seem to forget the melodic side of their music, to concentrate only on building a wall of sound, with just some moments on relief. They really succeed at this, they display a lot of energy and fill the air with thick and powerful layers of sound. The slap in the face is spectacular, the light show pretty good, but in the end, the music is mostly gone and that's a pity. Personnaly, it's not what I appreciate Caspian for on CD, and I could see in the audiance that I wasn't the only one.

In a nutshell, Caspian live is not post-rock but rather 200% metal : many people probably enjoy it, but it's best to be prepared :)

The band themselves were awesome, awesome atmosphere, precise performance, cool guys even to hang out with and chitchat.

The only problem was the soundcheck, which I assume wasn't done the right way, since the lead guitarist was relatively quiet and one couldn't even follow the rhythm and meldoy from time to time for someone who didn't know the songs.

And the loudness was also problematic. It was seriously extremely loud, I still have ringing in my ear.

Other than that, the performance was awesoooome! Would definitely come to see them again, preferebly in some arena, since they are a post-rock/metal band and there are lots of different layers to their songs and different sounds and frequencies need room to breathe

Without a doubt one of the best concerts of the year so far. If you look at the video of Sycamore (Audiotree Live), you'll get the idea of how the concert was. They did not take a minute to return to the stage for encores, ending with this fabulous song. Erin broke his fourth string, but that did not stop him playing; even allowed to change and continue playing keyboards at once. As I've always been repeating since ages ago, the acoustics of the Apollo is not the best, but Caspian knew perfectly how to tune their equipment to sound flawless. Thanks Caspian !!!!

Caspian was amazing as usual! It was 85 that night, but in the bar(the Hideout, San Diego) it was near 100 degrees and I was literally pouring sweat profusely . I couldn't stay the entire set because of severe dehydration, and I was only drinking water, and plenty of it. It was my birthday, so I'm extra bummed out I couldn't hang till the end of the show, where I heard they all did some kind of cool drumming. Still, I enjoyed them while I was able to be inside. Hope to see them again real soon, under better weather conditions!!

douglas-plaisance’s profile image

Amazing show. The band can do everything on the album in a live setting, and rock even harder live than on the album.

Bonus kudos for the guy running the light "show" - done all by hand, it melded _perfectly_ with the show. I honestly haven't seen it done that well in years. (or, come to think of it, since their live DVD)

Put it together, and if you're at all a fan, make sure to attend.

mbourgon’s profile image

Fantastic. Great skill and energy. Three extremely talented guitarists plus the bassist and drummer. Finished up with a huge finale, with two guitarists drumming. Very glad I attended this show.

Deep Tropics 2024 is back in Nashville: Here's the full line up for the August dance music fest

F or the sixth time in eight years, on Aug. 16-17, over three dozen critically acclaimed and globally renowned dance music acts will descend upon Nashville's Bicentennial State Park for Music City's award-nominated 2024 Deep Tropics Music Festival.

Already-announced headliners for the event include deep house sets from two-time America's Best DJ award-winner Kaskade and International Dance Music Awards-winning DJ Nora En Pure, as well as appearances by chart-topping trap and bass DJ RL Grime, Grammy-nominated house act Sofi Tukker and rising dubstep stars PEEKABOO, Tape B and Zingara.

Multiple levels of tickets ranging from $115-$440 are available at deeptropics.org .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Deep Tropics and sustainability

Deep Tropics is an offshoot of event booker and venue operator Full Circle Presents and Nashville's sustainability-driven Deep Culture non-profit, which as their website states, is aimed at "caring for the Earth via curated experiences that activate transformation of self, community and planet."

Over the past seven years of Deep Culture and Deep Tropics' existence, the group has engaged in renewable energy initiatives, reusable cup programs, tree-planting endeavors and zero-waste initiatives that have diverted nearly all of the festival's waste from landfills.

A press statement adds, "Deep Tropics sets the stage for an unforgettable experience that's as good for the planet as it is for the soul."

EDM in Music City? It's growing.

Full Circle Presents' engagement in Nashville's burgeoning dance music scene now includes the classic Chicago house-adoring family trio of Austin Knight, his parents Jim and Allison Knight and Full Circle Presents founder Blake Atchison. Atchison co-founded Deep Tropics with his brother Joel Atchison and John Hanna, a DJ, producer, and Full Circle Presents co-owner.

"Nashville is changing culturally as a city," Knight told The Tennessean in March 2024 . "It's growing at an accelerated pace and house music is bigger than ever in the U.S. More people are being exposed to this type of music."

"I think in the South, we can be a destination for electronic dance music."

It's not just happening at Deep Tropics and Night We Met, either.

Twenty percent of the newly renovated multi-space venue Cannery Hall (with a 1200-person standing-room main space) and recently enlarged (to nearly 2,000-person standing capacity)Assembly Food Hall Skydeck (where Shaquille O'Neal recently played dubstep and heavy bass as DJ Diesel) bookings through October are of the DJ-friendly variety.

As well, add the lower bowl of Nashville's Municipal Auditorium to the spaces booking dance acts by Sept. 10, when decade-long veteran EDM DJ, producer and singer-songwriter Porter Robinson brings his "SMILE! World Tour" to Music City.

What will Bicentennial State Park look like during Deep Tropics 2024?

2024's festival will also include three different stage activations at Bicentennial State Park.

  • A temple "enveloped in saturated greens and warm fire accents" to symbolize house music's roots in communal unity and the spiritual journey of its attendees will feature Grammy-winning melodic house artist Cassian, UK-based deep house DJ Marsh, Cuban house DJ & Space Miami resident Maloné and singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Elderbrook, among many.
  • A tropical lagoon setting "adorned in purples, blues, and cool greens" will symbolize the "airy, yet high-energy" power of bass music and feature It will feature New York-based "ancient world rhythm" favoring duo Memba, UK garage genre-inspired Taiki Nulight, jazz and hip-hop breakbeat favoring Cool Customer and two sets from emerging superstar drum and bass artist Rohaan.
  • A circle of stone columns ("a mini Stonehenge feeling under a shaded tree canopy)" will mainly celebrate amapiano (a South African, bass-heavy house variant) DJ Dainty, who pairs those deep house-inspired sounds with tribal sounds from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Chicago-based acid house and techno DJ Hiroko Yamamura, global record label, fashion label and inclusive party brand He.She.They , Miami-based Art with Me Festival co-founder Matt Caines and Nashville-based deep house and techno duo Lux Velour are also among many scheduled for the area.

Deep Tropics 2024 Full Lineup

  • Cool Customer
  • DJ Morphonic
  • Dumb Groove B2B Dame Luz
  • Elderbrook (DJ Set)
  • He.She.They.
  • Hiroko Yamamura

Social Security Administration Announces Most Popular Baby Names Of 2023

Once again, the most popular names for babies born in the United States are Liam and Olivia. The rankings are determined by Social Security Administration (SSA) data based on applications for Social Security cards.

Once again, the most popular names for babies born in the United States are Liam and Olivia.

The rankings are determined by Social Security Administration (SSA) data based on applications for Social Security cards. According to their data , Social Security numbers were recorded for 3,580,350 new babies, with male births (1,831,150) edging out female births (1,749,200). That reflects a dip from 2022, which recorded 3,666,046 new babies, and continues an overall trend of fewer births in the U.S. since the highest year on record, 2007, which welcomed 4,330,961 new babies.

Top 10 Lists

Here's the top 10 list for boys:

And here's the top 10 list for girls:

If those names sound familiar, they are. While the order is a little different, there is only one new name in the top 10, Mateo, which landed sixth in the list of most popular boys’ names, replacing Benjamin in the top ten. Notably, the top five names in both lists remained exactly the same.

For purposes of the list, variations and alternate spellings are treated as different names. That's why Liam (1) and William (10) made the list. Ditto for Amelia (4) and Mia (6) – The Princess Diaries , anyone? That also explains why you'll see Sophia (5) in the top ten list for girls and see Sofia (12) a little further down.

There is an exception to this rule. Name data are tabulated from the "First Name" field of the Social Security card application, which doesn’t allow for hyphens and spaces. That means Julie-Anne, Julie Anne, and Julieanne are counted as a single entry.

According to the agency, the top 1,000 names represent about 71% of all names of U.S. births in 2023.

Names included in the database are those where the year of birth, sex, and state of birth are on record, and where the given name is at least 2 characters long. And, data is restricted to births in the 50 States and District of Columbia—names from U. S. territories are not included in the national data.

Names That Changed The Most

Each year, the list also shares the names that changed the most in popularity . A change in popularity is indicated by the difference, either an increase or decrease, in ranks from one year to the next.

The names that changed the most for boys are:

And the names that changed the most for girls are:

Pop Culture Influence

Pop culture tends to play a part in baby names, and in 2023, it looks like parents were paying attention to social media. The fastest rising girl’s name, Kaeli, went viral in 2023, climbing a whopping 1,692 spots to 678—likely influenced by YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen (also known as Kaeli Mae). Variations ticked up, too, including Kelly (which is a pretty great name), which came in at 773.

There’s a TikTok component for the boys, too—the third fastest riser is Eiden, perhaps influenced by TikTok creator Wyatt Eiden who has over 3 million followers.

As for Chozen? He was a hero in the latest season of the hit Netflix NFLX show, Cobra Kai .

I was sure that Taylor would be in the top this year, thanks to Taylor Swift’s popularity, but it wasn’t—not even close. For 2023, the number of births with name Taylor is 1185, representing 0.068% of total female births that year. Interestingly, the year when the name Taylor was most popular is 2000, well before Taylor Swift’s debut album.

(Miley, on the other hand, did see a spike in name popularity, while Beyoncé did not make the top 1000.)

If you're curious about the popularity of a particular name, you can find out more on the SSA website. The Social Security Administration has released baby name data since 1997, although if you head over to the site , you can find data ranging well before that: Names in the database range as far back as 1880. Be prepared – it's addictive.

Applying For Social Security

The lists are compiled from names on Social Security card applications. Nowadays, getting a Social Security number at birth is so streamlined that the application typically happens when you submit information for the birth certificate.

If you decline to get a Social Security number for your child when you submit information for the birth certificate, you can always apply later, but that's a little more complicated and time-consuming since the Social Security Administration will have to verify your child’s birth certificate.

You can start the process online , but if you cannot apply online, you can fill out Form SS-5 . If your child is over the age of 12 when you make the application, the child has to come along with you even if you're the person signing the application on that person's behalf. You can find more information here .

Of course, unless you have a Gerber baby, the chances are slim that your little one will be headed to work immediately. So why get a Social Security number at birth? Taxes. Your child must have a Social Security number for you to claim your child as a dependent on your income tax return.

If you can't claim your child as a dependent, you can't claim certain tax breaks, including the earned income tax credit (EITC), the child tax credit, and the additional child tax credit. Additionally, without a Social Security number for your child, you can't file as head of household (HOH) or qualifying widow(er) with a dependent child.

Your child may also need a number if you plan to open a bank account (including a 529 savings plan) for them, buy savings bonds for their benefit, get medical coverage or insurance for them, or apply for government services on their behalf.

If you don't want a Social Security number for your child, you don't have to get one. In particular, some folks may object to having a Social Security number assigned for religious reasons. You can request an exemption/waiver on this basis, but ironically, you must get a Social Security number. What happens, practically speaking, is that you must obtain a number solely to fill out Form 4029 for the waiver. Assuming you qualify for the exemption/waiver, you must notify SSA that this is your intention and that you do not want a card created or mailed.

Gloria Trevi reveals 2024 Mi Soundtrack World tour with epic helicopter entrance at LA event

cassian tour 2023

Gloria Trevi, known as "The Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop ," is hitting the road to go on tour at the top of 2024.

Arriving via helicopter to flocks of guests and fans eagerly awaiting the Mexican singer-songwriter at Peacock Place in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, Trevi announced she’s embarking on the Mi Soundtrack World Tour in January.

“This night features a lot of nuances for me because the world is going through a very difficult moment,” Trevi said onstage in Spanish. “Every day we wake up to headlines in the news that leave goosebumps on our skin and the latest, a war, when all we want is love and peace.”

Trevi hopes her tour will be a light in people's lives and that it speaks to new generations of listeners, as well as OG fans. "It's universal," Trevi said. "It's going to be a very beautiful tour."

The 32-city U.S. leg of her tour kicks off in Hidalgo, Texas, on Jan. 26 and concludes Sept. 22 in Auburn, Washington.

Trevi has tapped pop singer-songwriter MAR Solís, daughter of Marco Antonio Solís, as her opening act for several shows on the tour.

Trevi will perform in major cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas, New York, Las Vegas and Denver. The 55-year-old will make a triumphant return to the Coliseo de Puerto Rico after an emotional and moving opening of her previous tour, Isla Divina World Tour, which concluded earlier this year.

The concept of Trevi's tour is inspired by the release of her recent albums, "Mi Soundtrack (Vol. 1)" and "Mi Soundtrack (Vol. 2)." They're compilations of newly recorded versions of her iconic hits "Poder y Fama," "Dr. Psiquiatra" and "Con los Ojos Cerrados," among others.

Trevi will also give life to newly released songs including "Medusa," "Que Se Acabe El Mundo" and "Siempre Yo."

Tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. local time through LiveNation.com

Take a walkaround tour of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Limited

Here's a good look at one trim, among many, that a lot of buyers are going to want.

cassian tour 2023

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma has been revealed , and it will be offered in a wide array of trim levels, but the majority of them will probably look like this somewhat modest Limited trim. Although "modest" is relative, as this is a higher trim level with plenty of chrome, it looks closer to lower trim levels than, say, the TRD Pro or the Trailhunter. It shares much in common styling-wise with the Tundra , and in fact, it shares quite a bit underneath as well. It uses the same basic platform as the Tundra and the Sequoia .

And as a bonus, there's also a walkaround video of the Tacoma TRD Sport, below.

Some additional upgrades over the previous Tacoma include standard four-wheel disc brakes , and an available coil spring rear suspension, which is a multi-link live axle setup. Lower trims will get traditional leaf springs.

Two main engines are available. There's a regular 2.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder — and this Limited is a hybrid version. The regular gas engine makes 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. It's available with either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. The six-speed manual version makes slightly less power at 270 horsepower. The very basic SR trim is detuned down to 228 horsepower.

As for the hybrid, it makes more than 300 horsepower and more than 400 pound-feet of torque. It's available only with an eight-speed automatic.

The truck is available in a variety of cab configurations. You have the extra cab with the shorter five-foot bed on display in the video above, or you can have a six foot bed on this version. And there is a two-door extended cab that has just one front row of seats with a six-foot bed .

The 2024 Tacoma goes on sale later this year with just the standard gas engine, and the hybrid will go on sale in 2024.

Here’s how much money every player made at the 2024 PGA Championship

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Follow on Instagram

Xander Schauffele's PGA win comes with a hefty check.

Getty Images

Like all the major championships, the 2024 PGA Championship purse has increased significantly over the years, and it made another jump this year.

Just how much of an increase are we talking about? A brief overview: Just three years ago, in 2021, the purse was set at $12 million — what was then a record total for the tournament, and a number that was surpassed by only the U.S. Open. Two years ago, the 2022 PGA Championship purse increased to $15 million. And last year, the 2023 PGA Championship purse jumped yet again to a whopping total of $17.5 million. (The Players Championship remains the richest purse in golf at a total of $25 million.)

This year, the 2024 PGA Championship purse increased again to a total of $18.5 million. To put that number in perspective, the eight PGA Tour Signature Events offer $20 million purses, a number that was matched by the 2024 Masters purse and the 2023 U.S. Open purse . The 2023 Open Championship purse was $16.5 million.

This year’s PGA champion will surpass the payout received by 2023 champion Brooks Koepka by $150,000, with a $3.3 million total payday. The runner-up will receive a cool $1.99 million, and third place will clear seven figures too, with a payout of $1.26 million.

Even the players who  missed the cut  receive a payout of $4,000 each. So how much did the rest of the players in the field come away with this year? You can find a complete list of the 2024 PGA Championship payouts for each player below.

Suga of BTS’s World Tour Is Pop Subversion at Its Finest

In the U.S., the first member of the group to stage solo concerts delivered a thrilling declaration of artistic individuality.

Suga sings in a dark arena, with five spotlights on him.

Four hooded figures seemed to float down the stage, through the soft exhalations of a fog machine. On their shoulders, they carried a body clothed in black. Rain and lightning flashed a clean white on the screen behind them. When the man was finally laid on the ground, what followed looked like a resurrection: The spotlights found him, screams rose, and at last he stirred. Then he raised a microphone to his mouth.

This rock-star Lazarus was Min Yoongi, better known as the rapper and songwriter Suga of the Grammy-nominated, chart-topping South Korean group BTS. But none of his bandmates were onstage that night at UBS Arena, on Long Island, New York, because it was the first date of his solo world tour. Since last summer, the members have been focusing on individual projects as each prepares to complete his mandatory military service. The first in BTS to do a solo tour, Suga was also performing as Agust D, the name he adopted in 2016 for making music that was darker, more raw, and more personal than his group work. Last month, he released his studio album D-Day , the powerful conclusion to his trilogy of Agust D records, which delivered social critique and meditations on trauma, fame, mental illness, alienation, and forgiveness.

Suga’s ongoing tour, also titled D-Day, is the first real showcase of his oeuvre, and, on the sold-out U.S. leg of his tour, it felt like a declaration of artistic individuality more than a decade in the making. His concerts exploded with frontman energy and auteurist flourishes. But his most striking achievement was embracing pop music’s empathy-fueling potential while resisting its dehumanizing effects.

All 11 of his U.S. tour dates, which wrapped Wednesday night in Oakland, California, began with a short film that ended with Suga lying on a road in a thunderstorm. This was a reference to when he was hit by a car while working in Seoul part-time as a delivery boy to support himself while training to debut with BTS. The crash left him with a painful shoulder injury that continued to dog him even as BTS went on to achieve international fame. The segue from the video to the real-life Suga being carried onstage, seemingly lifeless, was smooth yet jarring—a reminder of the human vulnerability of a pop star whose fans camp outside concert venues for days.

When I saw Suga on that first night, at UBS Arena, as well as the final U.S. night, at Oakland Arena, his show challenged expectations of what a pop concert can do. On one level it was a dynamic hip-hop show, put on by a technically proficient rapper who as a kid would sample the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music to make his own beats. Suga set the tone for the evening with “Haegeum,” whose title refers both to a Korean string instrument and to the notion of lifting a ban on something that was forbidden. “Endless influx of information prohibits freedom of imagination / And seeks conformity of thought,” Suga rapped in Korean. “Slaves to capitalism, slaves to money, slaves to hatred and prejudice / Slaves to YouTube, slaves to flexin’.” The haegeum ’s haunting strings and a deliciously grimy bass vibrated the air. Though the track was written entirely in Korean, the crowd roared the lyrics back to him. He practically entered a hypnotic state while running through a rap-heavy opening sequence with the defiant “Daechwita” and the earlier fan favorites “Agust D” and “Give It to Me.”

Read: The friends who listen to BTS together stay together

Before the audience could get too settled, Suga brought out his acoustic guitar, its body decorated with messages and drawings from the other six BTS members. He’d only learned to play the instrument during the pandemic , so his unplugged version of “Seesaw” cut a sharp contrast to previous performances of the song, which featured choreography, backup dancers, and an elaborate set. His effortless swagger during the earlier hype songs gave way to the quieter spectacle of Suga in singer-songwriter mode. Later, he sat down at an upright piano and performed his own version of the 2020 BTS track “Life Goes On” and, in a particularly emotional moment, a solo rendition of the song “Snooze,” which features the singer Woosung and the late Sakamoto. A clip of Suga and Sakamoto’s sole meeting, from late 2022, played beforehand on the big screen—the older musician playing the song on a grand piano while the younger man tries to contain his joy. Sakamoto’s presence on “Snooze,” one of his final collaborations, was especially poignant to Suga, who idolized him and wrote the song to comfort younger struggling artists.

Read: The astonishing duality of BTS

Again and again, D-Day allowed Suga to experiment in ways that he hadn’t been able to with BTS, and it was thrilling to see. Yes, he was still clearly a seasoned entertainer, who knew how to command the attention of tens of thousands of people , who could jump around a stage rapping without appearing to take a breath, as during the exhilarating medley of BTS rap songs in the middle of the concert. And at two Los Angeles shows, he welcomed guest appearances by the American singers Max and Halsey for their respective collaborations. But his subversive choices stood out too. The concert was interspersed with short films that evoked the dream logic of David Lynch and the grainy aesthetic of grind-house movies, telling the story of the musician’s three identities: the pop idol Suga, the shadow self Agust D, and the human Min Yoongi. The ultimate artistic aim of the concert seemed to be to clarify each of these distinct selves to the audience while recognizing that they must all exist together. Seeing him perform his solo BTS songs, including “Interlude: Shadow,” as well as his verses from tracks with the other BTS rappers , affirmed that he wasn’t looking to reject his past but instead was proud of it. After all, it had taken him to South Korea’s Blue House , America’s White House , the United Nations General Assembly, and the Grammys stage.

In another fascinating production choice, throughout the show, pieces of the extended stage were pulled to the ceiling by chains, giving Suga less and less space to perform, requiring him to navigate the platform more carefully. For his last pre-encore song, “Amygdala,” he stood on a lonely-looking square as fire blazed all around him, a terrifying prison. The centerpiece of the D-Day album, the emo-rap track serves as an origin story for the alter ego of Agust D, referencing his life’s defining traumas—the car accident, his mother’s heart surgery, and his father’s liver-cancer diagnosis—and how they shaped him. During the song’s final lines, apparently depleted, he collapsed on the ground, and the hooded figures returned to carry him away. Only this time, he wore all white, as though he’d been cleansed, his catharsis complete.

By the encore, all of the stage pieces had been removed, revealing the technical equipment that had been hiding beneath it. Scattered about were fire extinguishers, electrical cords, pyrotechnic devices. No longer elevated above the crowd, Suga performed his last few songs at ground level, right in front of fans, sometimes grabbing their phones and filming himself. These last moments were bittersweet: Much of the audience knew that after the tour ended in Seoul in late June, Suga would begin his military service for at least 18 months. That reality made the concerts feel like a temporary farewell. Fans’ glowing lightsticks rippled like a single wave throughout the arena. Every so often, carried by a feral energy, the crowd would start barking, making Suga gawk or laugh. In Oakland, he told the audience that he would return with the rest of the BTS members, asking fans to wait just a little longer.

On the tour’s first night, one more surprise awaited. I had assumed that the final song would be something sentimental or light-hearted. Instead, Suga walked over to an ominous circle of video cameras, stood right in the middle, and began murmuring the opening bars of “The Last.” This song, off his first mixtape, is one of his best and one of my favorites. It’s also a song I have a hard time listening to these days. On “The Last,” Suga raps about his OCD, depression, and social anxiety. His delivery starts out low and subdued and gradually grows more desperate; by the end he sounds like he’s somewhere between screaming and crying. When I first heard it years ago, I recalled my own unceasing panic attacks and the suffocating desire to die. The song lodged itself in my heart, a welcome shard.

Read: I wasn’t a fan of BTS. And then I was.

In recent years, Suga has made more music about growth, about self-love and being okay with uncertainty and suffering. He spoke early during the concert, in English, about wanting to perform with less anger, highlighting songs such as “SDL,” “People,” and “People Pt. 2”; these tracks painted a portrait of someone with a great capacity for measured reflection, forgiveness, and humility in the face of life’s challenges. I understand that too: The relief of no longer hurting so badly, of discovering healing on your own terms. So when I heard the first lines of “The Last” (“On the other side of the famous idol rapper stands my weak self, it’s a bit dangerous”), I froze. What was he doing? Those cameras—arrayed like a surveillance system, transmitting the videos to the screen above him—devoured and projected the anguish he was performing, suggesting that I was devouring it too.

But after a minute, I understood. Though he rapped with the same breathless passion he did as a striving 23-year-old, I realized that he wasn’t performing with pure fury but with an anger tempered by time. This emotion was no less powerful or sincere, but it was less damaging to the person communicating it. These days, he could stand in the flames and feel their heat, but not be consumed by them. He could connect with his younger self without fully becoming that person again.

Then the spell was over. The moment the song ended, the house lights went up so that we could see him walking in silence offstage. No goodbye, no drawn-out thank yous and waves to the cheering audience. Not even a glance backward. On the first night, people exchanged confused looks, shocked by his sudden exit. You could perhaps see this whole finale as a quiet confrontation with an audience, a grand assertion of the self by a beloved artist. But if it was a confrontation, it was one rooted in trust rather than condescension. Trust that the audience can sit with discomfort, that they’re self-aware enough not to be offended or horrified by what he’s showing them.

It was the perfect ending. A concert that began in darkness and mythmaking ended in light and exposure. Suga started the show being carried by others; he ended it by carrying himself out. What more could we want? He had just shown us everything.
