Women Over 50: Your Best Guide to a Capsule Travel Wardrobe

capsule travel wardrobe for women over 59

Social media is filled with travel photos of gorgeous young women in flowing gowns that coordinate with the scenery. We long to look like these women, but the reality of travel, for us more mature women, is not as glamorous as these images portray. Travel involves a lot of walking… and dust… and sun. And how do these influencers climb a mountain in a full-length gown? Let alone pack light with sundresses in every color? Sleeveless dresses and high heels just aren’t practical, especially as travel clothing for women over 50. But no worries! You can create a travel capsule wardrobe with stylish and functional clothes that allow you to pack light, feel comfortable, and look great!

My travels have taken me to over 60 countries, from luxury African safaris and European cruises to rafting and camping through the Grand Canyon. Through trial and error (and maybe a few overstuffed suitcases!), I’ve honed my packing skills and space-saving strategies. Now, I’m here to help you create a capsule wardrobe that lets you travel light and explore in style .

What is a capsule wardrobe and why use one for travel?

A capsule wardrobe is defined as a collection of basic items that mix and match, and don’t go out of style. The items harmonize in color and put together can create many, many looks. It’ll take you from a morning walk to afternoon tea . This system is ideal for traveling light. By curating your travel clothes, you can travel carry-on only, limit decision fatigue, and still look lovely. Perfect for the older woman adventurer!

examples of mix and match outfits for travel.. Pack light with a capsule wardrobe for women in retirement.

As a frequent traveler, I have created two basic capsule travel wardrobes, one for cold weather and one for warm. As I plan my trip, I adjust these capsules. I’ve tried to stick to a 10-piece wardrobe for my trips, but may add or subtract as the circumstances dictate. [On recent trips I’ve included a statement piece for more versatility and fun, creating an 11-piece capsule. ] To make things simpler I use a phone app for my packing lists with the capsule wardrobe items as basics for every trip. But you don’t need an app or anything special to create your capsule wardrobe – just make a list of the clothes you will use in your capsule or keep the list in a notebook or a spreadsheet. Whatever works for you!

A capsule wardrobe is defined as a collection of basic items that mix and match and don’t go out of style.  In theory the capsule wardrobe is all you need for a 2-week holiday wardrobe for over 50s. In practice the capsule wardrobe is often the base wardrobe for the trip, with extra pieces added as space allows.

Consider your itinerary

If you’re off on a work trip or visiting a city you know well, you likely know what types of clothing you’ll be needing and will only have to account for the weather. But if you’re planning an adventure it’s helpful to make a list of the activities you’ll be doing to understand what clothing you’ll need.

Creating a calendar, or printing out your itinerary, can be helpful. Planning ahead for hiking in the morning and a nice dinner in the evening will make your life easier. And can save decision time if you bring your notes with you!

I’ve found that after days of travel, I might forget some of the options my capsule allows. It’s great to have a reminder of what I’d planned! (Left: I almost forgot to wear my Zuri duster as a skirt until I noted it on my planning app!)

Choose the basics for your capsule travel wardrobe

Begin with what you have . There is no need to go out and buy items if you have the makings of a good travel wardrobe already. Let’s set an example of sustainable living by using what we have, before buying something new! Look for clothing that travels well – lightweight, easy-care clothing you enjoy and would happily reach for at home. (I’d add wrinkle free clothing, or wrinkle resistant, if that’s not already your closet standard. It is mine! Who has time for ironing?!)

Simple is best – make your clothing the least interesting thing about you.

Choose a neutral color for your base : Black works for most cities, whites for the tropics. But choose navy or beige if it’s more flattering on you. Still neutral! I began with a black base but have changed to navy as it’s softer against my skin and hair.

Pick 2 tops and 1 bottom (pants, shorts, skirt) in this neutral color. Make sure these items are comfortable, classic, and easy to care for. A Breton striped shirt is a great item to add here.

Add one solid white (or black) shirt: Bring one additional solid top, a tee if the trip is casual, or a button down for dressing up. These are the travel wardrobe essentials. The classic button down goes well with everything and can even be worn open as a jacket. I pack either a black merino tee or an Eddie Bauer wrinkle-resistant button down shirt . Just splurged on a quality merino wool top from Wool&, the Stevie 3/4 sleeve top. I’m thrilled with it – flattering and super comfortable. I know it’ll make it in my every packing list!

Add a solid black (or neutral) bottom: I always pack one pair of black pants or capris. These go with everything and don’t show dirt. (Helpful hint: wear dark colors on a flight. Nothing like turbulence to cause a spill!) Some people always pack jeans. These are heavy, and slow to dry when laundered, so don’t usually make it into my luggage, but there are trips when jeans are mandatory! You do you!

Add a topper – a lightweight sweater or jacket in the neutral or a coordinating neutral. Having some sort of topper is critical if you’re visiting sacred sites, or traveling in areas where women dress conservatively. A pashmina will do the trick if you’re averse to sweaters. (If you’re cold weather traveling, you’ll probably need 2 toppers.)

[Optional] Add a dress , or two, depending on your destination and style of travel. I have a couple of print shift dresses I may pack, but generally choose to bring a dress in my neutral color. Extra points if this dress is able to be styled up and down. I’ve been won over to Wool& merino wool dresses lately which can be styled as a dress, a top, or a tunic.

Add 2 tops/blouses in complementary color: Choose silky sleeveless tops and you can pack three!

travel clothing for women after 50, putting together a capsule travel wardrobe

I took a camel DKNY cashmere cozy as my topper on our South African trip. It was perfect on the long flight, serving as sweater and blanket in one. I reached for it again in the cool evenings on safari and in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town wore it to dress up for dinners out.

Pay attention to the lengths that work for your body. Unless blessed by genetics, most women in their fifties and sixties will want a bit more coverage in their over 50 capsule wardrobe. Tights, and short skirts may not flatter as they once did but pair those tights with a long tunic and you’re good to go! I find capris or cropped pants flatter my legs and I choose tops with sleeves to protect from the sun.

Example of a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Create a capsule travel wardrobe around a basic neutral. Add color and texture to liven it up.

Example of the Minimalist Capsule expanded to 11-pieces

Use the core capsule as a base for an 11-piece travel capsule wardrobe with plenty of options.

Accessorize your capsule travel wardrobe by adding color and style

Have fun – choose a few colorful pieces to jazz up your outfits. This is where we can learn from the renowned style of the French woman. She might wear a simple neutral outfit every day (often black) but will liven it up with accessories! A silky blouse, a colorful scarf, or a bright skirt – lightweight pieces that add some spice to your outfits. Some women will design their whole capsule wardrobe around the colors of their favorite scarf.

Jewelry – those neutral outfits are asking for some fun jewelry. Leave your valuable pieces at home but bring a chunky necklace or sparkly earrings. Small things can bump your day outfit to evening wear! I love to pick up jewelry as I travel. Great to wear on the trip and a wonderful (lightweight!) souvenir when we’re home.

Review and visualize your capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe template will help you to choose items that mix and match well. We’ve shared our favorites on Easy Elegance: 3 Templates for Capsule Wardrobe Planning .

Pack light with a capsule wardrobe. Travel with carry-on only, using scarves and jewelry to add color. Image of luggage with scarf

Use an app like Outfit Planner, Stylebook or Cladwell to visualize how your wardrobe picks work together. Don’t pack anything that doesn’t go with two or more pieces. Remember, your goal is to create mix and match outfits for travel. (see Pack Lighter with Stylebook)

Test pack I lay out all my planned clothing at least a week before the trip. This is a great time to make sure the pieces work together as well as to check for stains, and necessary repairs. This is also when you might notice you have a bit of extra room to add another favorite scarf or t shirt! But be careful, it’s easy to throw in a couple of “just in case” items that’ll negate all the work you’ve done to create a minimalistic travel capsule!

[scarf: Gold & Blue William Morris from the Met Opera Shop – a favorite, shown also in capsule collage above!]

Shoes for travel

Probably the biggest challenge for packing light is shoes. It’s difficult to pare down our options when it comes to footwear. Most experts recommend limiting ourselves to two pairs of shoes, with the heaviest being worn on the flight. I must admit I often take three – sneakers or hiking shoes on the flight, a pair of flats, and sandals. Wear heels if you are absolutely comfortable in them, but for my travel wardrobe over 60, I stick to stylish flats.

But I’m still hopeful that I’ll come across that unicorn – a casual flat/sandal option that’ll take me to dinner or the pool… Recommendations gladly accepted!

Adding new items to your travel wardrobe capsule

Shop your closet first! Set an example of sustainable travel by using what you have before buying something new . The fashion industry is one of the leading contributors to global carbon emissions. Commit to reducing your ‘fast fashion’ consumption. Wear what you have and, when new is necessary, invest in well made, timeless designs.

If you don’t already have items in your closet that will work for your trip, there are many options for women’s clothes for travel. In addition to the tried-and-true big travel clothing companies – Travelsmith, Magellans, etc. – many clothing lines cater to women in their 50s, 60s, and above. They usually offer flattering clothes that travel well.

Quality first! It’s past time for fast fashion- those trendy, inexpensive items that’ll be worn one season before ending up in the donation pile. If you’re going to buy women’s clothes for travel, invest in good quality pieces. You will pay more initially for that merino wool top, but it’ll serve you for many years. (Merino wool is the ultimate travel fabric – wrinkle resistant, odor resistant, and quick drying! Bonus points for it’s being a sustainable fabric!)

Find a brand that fits you well and is designed with travel in mind, i.e. wrinkle resistant. Look into convertible clothing which can give you a lot of options. The following brands carry stylish pieces for a holiday wardrobe for over 50s:

Brands offering quality travel clothing for women over 50

Athleta carries affordable pants that work for travel days, and evenings out. Well tailored, the black Venice pintuck pants, are always on my list.

Encircled in Canada has a line of ‘dressy casuals’ which are ideal for travel . I love the dressy sweatpants. They’re slouchy and soft, great for travel days, but look refined enough for an evening out with a jacket or pretty scarf. Encircled has committed to sustainability and is making many of its classic pieces in bamboo and merino wool.

Coolibar Amara shirt -classic summer style - coastal grandmother

Coolibar specializes in sun-protective clothing. This is so important as travelers are out in the sun so much and often forget to reapply sunscreen! I’ve added several of these pieces to my travel wardrobe. My favorite is the Amara button-down shirt which resists wrinkles and lets me channel my inner “coastal grandmother.” Ha!

Chico’s Travelers Collection has wrinkle free options that look great coming straight out of the suitcase. Many dressy options, too! I always include a few items from Chico’s in my capsule wardrobe.

Wool& clothing isn’t designed specifically for travel, but the simple merino dresses are a natural to work as your base. They also offer merino wool leggings which are wonderful for layering on chilly mornings. Other responsible wool brands to check: Ridge Merino (love my Hyde dress/topper ), Unbound Merino , and (U.S. Made) Wuru .

Toad & Co . has many natural fiber pieces that are great as accent pieces to your capsule wardrobe.

Eileen Fisher ‘s styles are timeless. The silk tops and the luxe merino stretch line would seem to be perfect travel solutions. (I haven’t had the opportunity to try this line, but have had great success with lightweight, odor resistant merino wool.)

Diane Kroe specializes in travel-friendly clothing and has some of the best travel clothes for women. Most are multi-functional – converting from scarves to cardigans, skirted tights to bodysuits. Diane Kroe’s line includes stylish clothing for plus size women as well. I always have a Diane Kroe piece on my packing list!

Visit REI to see lots of options for active travel – Patagonia, Prana, Exofficio, Smartwool, Icebreaker – all are great options if you’ll be hiking or cycling on your trip.

Perfect travel clothing for women over 50 is comfortable and makes you feel good

It’s most important that you pack only things that are comfortable to wear and make you happy. Don’t include a ‘travel friendly’ option that you’d never reach for at home.

I can’t emphasize this enough. DO NOT pack anything you wouldn’t be comfortable wearing at home. Traveling in our older years is a gift. We no longer need dress to impress but can dress to de-stress. We can find comfortable clothing for older women that will make us feel good. And as we have come to learn – if we feel good, we look good!

This basic over 50 capsule travel wardrobe will serve you well from Paris to the Grand Canyon. But if there’s room in your luggage, allow yourself a favorite item or two. A brightly colored dress, graphic tee, or signature piece will be a nice change from the basic wardrobe.

And as always -make sure to pack a hat for skin protection!

Are there clothing essentials you reach for when packing? Please share your travel tips in the comments!

There is virtually nowhere you can’t go in a white blouse and black pants. Dressed up or down, having these two items that fit well are indispensable.

Yes! But I make sure to pack two white blouses as I’ll inevitably spill something the first day! 🙂

I own the Edie Bauer wrinkle free shirt, I’ll leave it home and pack my llbean pinpoint wrinkle free shirt instead , because it is really really wrinkle free.

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t tried the LL Bean pinpoint wrinkle free, but will now!

This is an EXCELLENT article! As a full-time International Petsitter, you would think I would have the packing thing down to a science, but I SO do not. This will help me immensely! Thank you!

Most of my wardrobe for years has come from Eileen Fisher. Her tunic tops and crepe or ponte pants (black) are perfect for travel. And they come in all sizes now.

I’ve heard great things about that line, but haven’t tried it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Lovely informative article!

Loved your information. I find it so hard to pack for long trips. The younger gals make it all look so easy.

Thanks, Dana! I can’t imagine how many clothes the younger girls bring to create such instagramable images!

Over the years I have managed to create a coordinated set of clothes that come with me when I travel. But I must admit because I wear many of these just when travelling they don’t wear out. So I feel like I am always looking the same in my travel photos! Good idea to think about one for hot and cold temps. My biggest challenge too is shoes.

Ha! But I bet you’re likely the only one who notices the repeated outfits!

Lindsay phillips shoes……her tag line is change your style not your sole, I have several pairs, Switch flops with changable straps for the day, heels with changable button decorations for meals and evenings, 2 pairs……endless possibilities, a travellers dream

Due to ongoing foot problems,I have chosen vionic flip flops. Choose plain ones for everyday and sparkly ones for dinner.

Thanks. What capsule app do you use?

I use Stylebook mostly. I used to use Cladwell. Do you have an app you recommend?

I love the short sleeved blouse you picture below your heading, “What is a capsule wardrobe and why recommend using one for travel?” Where can I find that or something similar? Been struggling to find blouses that serve many purposes like that one would, that are not cheaply made and that travel well. Help!

One of the fashion tips my husband and I brought home from Europe is their use of scarves in the winter. They are beautiful, warm and functional. Great ideas for travel clothes.

Shoes I have found that are comfortable and I can wear to dinner, Naot- Kayla or Hero

Thanks Leslie, I haven’t tried Naot shoes. Will have to look for them.

I LOVE Naot shoes! Almost every pair of shoes I own is from Naot. They are so comfortable, even for long walking days. I’ve worn them all over Europe, in many Disney parks, and to Sydney and Cape Town. I never even have to break them in!

I have a pair of sparkly Fit Flop sandals that are extremely comfortable and take me easily to dress up at night. I’m about to embark on a long multi seasonal trip and hope to be able to pack in a smaller suitcase for ease getting on and off trains. Being plus size is a challenge because it takes up more space. Thanks for your ideas.

I’m only 33 but I’m also baffled by how these ladies pack all these long flowy dresses to hikes (some even rent them!). I love clothes and fashion, but I too prefer being practical. There’s a middle ground. Thanks for sharing these tips!

Starting to build my wardrobe now for a 2-week trip to Europe in early spring. My biggest challenges are being prepared for rain/cooler weather and being able to stick with carry-on luggage only. I have some wrinkle-free basics (tops and bottoms) which supposedly will wash easily (we’ll be in AirBnBs with washers but no dryers). I am sensitive to fabrics so Merino wool is not an option for me. I have a lightweight packable down jacket and recently invested in some waterproof trainers, plus I am planning to bring a pair of flat boots. Thank you for your tips, the scarf-for-a-pop-of-color idea is a game-changer!

Sounds great Neysa! Consider a technical fabric base layer to help with the cooler weather. Packs light but will keep you cozy.

I LOVE bamboo fabrics. Similarly to merino wool, I find that they are cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cool. They drape well, and are soft to the touch. They’re also naturally antimicrobial, so they don’t stink and need to be laundered less frequently. I own leggings, nightgowns, tanks, and tees!

may I ask where do you purchase the dress at the top of your first picture with the scarf around the neck. I have been looking for one of theses but not having much luck.

Love this article as most seem always to skinny models, which i am not!!!!!

Hi Carol, that dress is an old favorite of mine, from Travelsmith. It’s no longer available but you might find similar dresses at Lands End, Chicos, or Wool&.

Thanks for your kind words!

Thank you so much for this post. It is great to see the pieces all work together. Re sandals, I have a pair of rose pink Merrel sandals that are great to walk around in all day, and are lovely worn with a sun dress. These are my day/evening shoes for a hot tropical destination. https://www.merrellaustralia.com.au/products/sandspur-rose-convert-marron

Ooh! I love those. I have similar in black but I love the subtle pink. Thanks for sharing!

We are going on the Viking Grand European cruise this fall. I am trying to put together the Capsule wardrobe & I love your suggestions. I know the white/black stripe long sleeve Tee is popular & I love it. I just can’t seem to find one I love. Any suggestions?

That will be a wonderful cruise!!

The stripe shirt is a classic and perfect for Europe. But as you’ve found, sometimes it’s hard to find one that suits you. I recently purchased one from Yala made of bamboo. Haven’t travel tested it yet but plan on taking it to Peru next month. Let me know if you find one you love!

I always pack one of these! I just got one from Yala in bamboo that I like. Have a great time on your trip. We’re looking at that cruise too.

Such great tips and suggestions! We’re newly empty nesters and have just started to enjoy the cruising life but man, packing and knowing how..for different destinations can be tricky! This will be a big help for our Alaskan cruise coming up in a month.

Great! Our Alaskan cruise was cancelled in 2021. But we’ll get there someday! Have fun!

Excellent article! Thanks so much!

I love the “formula” for putting together a practical travel wardrobe; it looks like a perfect starting point for any trip! I’d never choose black for the neutral. Brown, olive or navy are more friendly travel colors, as they hide dirt better than black.

A couple questions: You didn’t mention PJs … I’d lean towards a casual lounge outfit like joggers + an oversized tee, and I’d bring two lounge outfits so you could wear one while washing the others (of course, I’m assuming the luxury of a washing machine). Also, lounge outfits need to be “decent enough” to be seen by others.

That’s a great addition. Thanks, Resa! I usually bring a light nightgown, but have definitely packed loungewear when I’m traveling with friends.

Absolutely spot on with the image versus reality scenario. I’m 64 travelling to several cities in Italy and then going on a cruise. Also I do t want to lug a suitcase so everything must fit in my backpack carryon. The reality is I perspire, get sore feet, and occasionally need to have a nap. Love all the suggestions you’ve made.

Wow! So helpful, I tend to overpack!! We are going to Italy for 3 weeks in November, so I’m already fretting about what to pack.😬

Three weeks in Italy! Lucky you!

We were in Italy for 3 weeks last Nov. Plan for wetter and colder than you think, and plan to do laundry. Don’t forget your umbrella, great walking shoes no matter what they look like and a camera.

I’m 60 and putting together a wardrobe for my trip to Europe, but I’m sorry you lost me with the dowdy capris (or ANYTHING Chicos) and the old lady scarves. We all have our own style, and this works for you, but I wouldn’t wear anything so frumpy myself. I DO intend to wear breezy sleeveless dresses and not sure why those are considered “not appropriate.”

Hi Donna, I certainly don’t think breezy sleeveless dresses are inappropriate and am delighted that you’ll be enjoying them! Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for all your tips. They are great. I always try to avoid buying new clothes before I travel and take what I have in my wardrobe ..that way I can buy that nice new top in Italy or something from the place I am visiting and leave some of my older clothes behind. That way I have room in my case & come home with something I have bought for myself. 😀

Me too! I love having special pieces that remind me of a great trip.

The concept of a capsule wardrobe is truly a game-changer for travel. The idea of mixing and matching essential pieces to create numerous outfits is brilliant. It’s wonderful to see how a well-curated wardrobe can take you from a morning walk to afternoon tea, all while feeling confident and put-together.

Your tips on choosing a neutral base color and adding complementary pieces to jazz up the outfits are spot on. Accessories truly make a difference in transforming a simple outfit. And your emphasis on quality over fast fashion is incredibly important – investing in well-made, versatile pieces not only benefits the traveler but also contributes to sustainable living.

I’m planning a trip to Copenhagen next month and hoping to pack in just a backpack so I’m not stuck finding a place to stash a suitcase between hotels. Thanks for the capsule tips. I’m looking for lightweight, rollable, wrinkle-free clothes so they’ll look as good on Day 4 as the day I pack. Any tips?

I love my merino wool and bamboo clothing. Super lightweight and wrinkle-free. Have a great trip!

my go to shoes are bobs by sketchers. they have on amazon called women’s desert kiss stretch quarter strap sandal flat . the only shoe that has zero sciatic pain due to a low heel .

Thanks Ann, I have a pair of Skechers I wear all the time! I’ll be bringing it to France with me next month.

Chico’s no ion shirts are wonderful and come in many colors. I have their long and 3/4 sleeve white for travel. They work great!!! I get compliments each time I wear them with scarves. I,too, wear sketchers most travel days. The are fantastic and can be washed. Great site and info.

Love it! As a mom I struggle to find practical clothes. Capsule wardrobe is a great option. Next summer I will definitely create my travel capsule wardrobe!

I need to assemble a capsule wardrobe for an Alaska cruse for a plus size women. I don’t ask for much. The weather varies greatly.

Focus on layers, Wendy. I’d suggest a base layer top (and perhaps bottom) and then create the capsule as you usually would. (I’d bring a merino dress that can be accessorized to create several looks, a pair of dark pants and top. Pack your favorite scarves, etc. Adding a lightweight sweater that can be removed as the day warms up works well.)

I love all of your suggestions for minimalist packing. My problem is I seem to have a small head, so hats overwhelm me! If I try the hats in the kids dept., they have cartoon characters on them! Help! Any suggestions on how to pick out or fit a hat? TIA Erin

Hi Erin, I have the opposite problem and have had some luck getting hats on Amazon. If they don’t fit, you can return them.

The Comfortable Basics Women Over 50 Wear for Travel

Allyson Payer

As anyone who has ever accidentally worn something uncomfortable to travel in knows, it can make or break your day. I realize that this sounds dramatic, but as someone who used to travel in high-waisted, 100% cotton jeans (I know…), I can vouch. While we regularly cover the excellent airport outfits women of all age groups wear, I strongly believe that women age 50 and up are a great source of non-verbal style advice.

By the time you reach age 50, you've been traveling for decades and have gained plenty of wisdom when it comes to what to wear for any given occasion, travel days included. I studied the airport outfits of stylish women like Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore, and noticed quite a few patterns as far as the comfortable basics they wear are concerned. Keep scrolling to learn from their examples and shop the recommended travel basics.

Loose Trousers

If you're anti-jeans and anti-leggings when traveling (I get it), Julianne Moore's loose trousers are the answer. They also just so happen to be a trend right now. The blazer is optional.

On Julianne Moore: Louis Vuitton bag

Reformation + Mason Pants

Ballet Flats

Want something more polished than sneakers but equally comfortable? Follow Nicole Kidman's lead and wear a pair of ballet flats to the airport.

On Nicole Kidman: Zimmermann  Super Eight Ruffle Shirt ($595); Moynat Paris bag

Rothy's + The Mary Jane

While sweatpants may have once seemed sloppy, they're a trend now, and they happen to be J.Lo-approved. (Tip: Wearing a matching sweatshirt adds a bit more polish.)

Nanushka + Planet Cropped Track Pants

Flat Ankle Boots

If you're going somewhere straight from the airport and want to look chic, forgo the sneakers and wear a pair of flat ankle boots as Andie Macdowell did.

The beauty of a cashmere sweater is that it's warm but not bulky. It's truly the perfect thing to wear with jeans, as French actress Isabelle Huppert expertly displayed.

You don't have to look like you're going to the gym when you wear leggings to the airport. Just follow Viola Davis' lead and pair them with a wool coat and ankle boots.

Skinny Jeans

Some may scoff at the idea of wearing skinny jeans on a plane, but if you choose a pair with stretch (like Yolanda Hadid did), you won't have any regrets whatsoever.

She Packs Lite

Women over 50: Best Clothes to Create the Ultimate Travel Capsule (2022)

I am an over 50 woman, and I love to travel. I actually started this site because I love to think about travel, packing and especially packing efficiently. But, when I look online, it’s hard to find good guides for travel clothes for women over 50. Finding style tips for mature women can be hard, especially when the internet seems to be flooded with content marketed towards twenty-somethings.

Just because you’re not twenty and don’t want to wear short shorts and crop tops doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice style while you’re traveling. Our travel capsule concepts apply to all women. However, this post, in particular, is meant to address US, Women Over 50 who want to travel with style. We want to dress in a classic style and have a travel capsule wardrobe that will be appropriate for all our activities. Let’s get to it.

What is a travel capsule?

First things first, if you are new to She Packs Lite, you may need to learn about the travel capsule wardrobe, as it is fundamental to how we pack.

To put it simply, a travel capsule wardrobe is one in which you pack a curated selection of pieces for your trip. The collection has a color scheme, often neutral colors, and all the pieces mix and match to provide lots options for all the activities on your trip.

5-4-3-2-1 Travel Capsule Method

One of the keys to perfecting a travel wardrobe when you use our 5-4-3-2-1 method is to make sure that all of your pieces serve multiple functions. Wearing the same items in different ways is a perfect way to create a variety of looks without having to pack individual outfits for each day. To read more about travel capsule wardrobes, check out our post on how to pack a travel capsule here .

Within this method, you pack:

  • 3 pairs of shoes, 3 dresses
  • 2 bags, 2 hats, 2 necklaces
  • 1 jacket, 1 cover-up, 1 pair of sunglasses, 1 swimsuit

You’ll notice that the first three categories of items are pretty basic. However, you can mix these items up and choose things like skirts instead of pants. You’ll also want to take the weather at your destination into consideration when choosing these items. If it’s going to be warm, you may opt for more lightweight dresses, which will not only keep you cool while you’re exploring your fabulous city but will also take up less room in your suitcase. In colder weather, jeans are a good choice of travel pants because you can most likely wear them with every outfit you pack. You should also have a tank top or two for a base layer.

PRO TIP : Start with quality items and wardrobe pieces from your own closet. You can supplement with less expensive items to fill in the gaps, but you want the basics of your capsule to be good quality and to fit well.

After you have your basics covered you can start to mix up your outfits and accessorize more with the smaller items you pack. Scarves, jewelry, and hats can really change up an outfit and they’re a great way to let your style shine through when you’re wearing clothes that are plainer.

PRO TIP : Two pieces jumpsuits or skirt/shirt combos in your color scheme are GREAT additions to your travel wardrobe. You can use them to mix and match into different color combos and have that many more looks to choose from!

Travel Tops

Mix and Match is the key! Basic tops can be the core of every capsule wardrobe and you want to be able to layer. A nice shirt and a lightweight sweater can serve you in so many situations. From a cut perspective, I stay away from bodycon, but at the same time do like a cut that is not too boxy. Ruching can also go a long way to hide lumps and bumps! I personally like v neck tees for my wardrobe, but find the cut that suits you best.

Travel Bottoms

Again, you want to be able to mix and match all your tops and bottoms to create different looks. You want to find comfortable pants that are also stylish.

Travel Shoes

Comfort is your main goal here. For long days of walking you will want supportive shoes that will handle the terrain of your destination. And if you have a fancier event, oftentimes a nice pair of sandals will serve you well. It is a rare trip where I bring heels these days.

Travel Clothes for Women over 50: Important things to consider

Pick items that serve a purpose .

5-4-3-2-1 packing works for formal trips as well as casual. Consider the weather where you are going and what activities you will do. For example, if you are going to Lisbon for a week of sightseeing and dining out, your choices of tops and bottoms will be entirely different than if you are heading to the mountains for a casual week of hiking,

Still confused? Check out this actual Travel Capsule Wardrobe from a recent trip I took to Portugal!

Portugal Travel Capsule | travel clothes for women over 50

Choose a color scheme

One of the most important things you can do to make your travel capsule wardrobe successful is to stick to one color scheme throughout the course of your packing. Pack things that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits, so choosing items that are within the same color scheme will ensure that all of your items work together, not just as specific outfits. Picking neutral colors makes this super easy. Of course, if you have a favorite piece that is brightly colored or patterned, you can always work that into your travel capsule as well. Matching a vibrant top with a pair of pants is much easier when your pants are all neutral or solid colors. Trying to create outfit combinations with multiple prints or colors is where it can get tricky.

Make sure your shoes are multipurpose

Shoes are a major consideration when packing travel clothes for women over 50. First of all, comfort is queen! We always suggest bringing a comfortable pair of walking shoes wherever you go, because more than likely, you’ll be doing a lot of walking. A cute pair of street sneakers can be supportive and comfortable, but they can also be worn with different outfits.

Next, never pack more than three pairs of shoes! If you’re panicking and thinking “ That’s not enough!”, don’t worry. If you’re being mindful while choosing your shoes, three pairs are all that you need, no matter how long your trip is.

These Astral Women’s Brewess sneakers are also day hiking shoes and they were AWESOME on my trip to Portugal. I was able to use for cute outfits and day hikes without issue.

best travel outfits over 50

If you’re traveling in the summer months, you’ll probably also want to pack a pair of flip-flops or sandals. These aren’t great for walking, but for beach days or nights out, they’ll work great. Fashionable sandals also work great for those dressier occasions when you don’t want to wear heels. High heels look great in the moment, but they’re not comfortable, so when you’re making shoe choices, really consider what shoes you’re going to be comfortable in and which ones you can wear with multiple outfits. So if you have a formal night or special event planned for your trip but you don’t want to take up one of your pairs of shoes with a pair of high heels that you’ll only wear once, a nice pair of sandals is the way to go.

Pack clothes that make you feel good

One of the best things about maturing into your style as you get older is that you can start taking comfort into account. We’ve all squeezed into a pair of skinny jeans that were two sizes too small when we were younger, and you probably don’t have any desire to do that anymore. As you get older and start to look for the best travel clothes for women over 50, you want to dress for your body type. You definitely want to take that into account when you’re packing for your vacations. It’s tempting to buy new clothes for a trip so you can look stylish while you’re abroad, but keep in mind that if you want to pack light, these are things that you’re going to have to wear multiple times, so you should be comfortable wearing them. And importantly, you want to feel good in them!

This is especially true for travel days. If you’re headed somewhere international, you probably have a few long flights ahead of you. Being comfortable on the plane is the best way to make sure your vacation is off to a good start. If you’re not on a business trip or flying first class, yoga pants are some of the best travel clothes because they’re comfortable and they’ll keep you warm when the airplane air conditioning kicks in.

Long Flight Ahead? Check out our favorite pants for long flights.

Choose outerwear that can be worn with multiple outfits

Outerwear can be some of the bulkiest clothing that you’ll have to pack, so that’s why we have limited outwear choices to 1 in our travel capsule wardrobe method. On long trips, even in the summer, you should have at least one jacket to keep you warm if the weather turns bad or you get caught in the rain. It’s no fun to be in a foreign country without a raincoat or jacket. If it’s you don’t expect cold weather where you’re going, a leather jacket is a nice choice that can be matched with a lot of different outfits.

For winter travel, your coat or jacket will probably be a lot larger than it would be in the summer. If you find that you don’t have any room in your suitcase for a large winter coat, you can always wear your coat on the plane to avoid having to pack it in a small bag. Especially in the winter, you should choose a coat that goes with all of your outfits. It’s unlikely that with all of the other bulky items you’re going to pack that you’ll have room for a second warm coat.

Think about the time of year that you’re traveling

The time of year and the weather in your destination will have a large impact on the clothes you pack, so it’s important to do a little bit of research ahead of time. The good news is that summer vacations and cruises are a lot easier to pack for, simply because your clothes for those climates are inherently smaller than winter clothes. Cruise fashion mostly consists of swimsuits and dresses, so those trips don’t require as much planning.

However, if you’re traveling to a country that has volatile weather in the spring or fall, that’s important to know while you’re packing. A quick Google search will usually tell you what kind of weather you can expect at your destination.

Pick wrinkle-resistant fabrics and other good travel fabrics

When you’re packing light, you likely use a packing method like the rolling method or packing cubes . These can be great space savers, but they can also lead to wrinkly clothing. An easy way to avoid this is to pack wrinkle-resistant clothes. This is pretty easy in the summer because we tend to pack lightweight clothes anyway, but during other times of the year, it takes a little more planning.

A lot of wrinkle-resistant clothes are also very flattering because they tend to be flowier. If you struggle with finding clothes that make you feel confident, opt for a looser-fitting top or pants. This also goes for dresses in the summer, flowy wrinkle-free fabrics will keep you cool and they’re a great way to show off your style without having to pack too many separate items. If you like incorporating different colors into your daily looks, pick a bright or patterned dress for your next trip to help mix up your outfits while keeping your packing list light.

But, for example, if it’s cold where you’re traveling and you pack a lot of very thin shirts because they look good even if they don’t keep you warm, you’re not making the best use of your limited space. Instead, a merino wool base layer will keep you from freezing while you’re walking around the city and it will be comfortable and stylish at the same time. Think of what you would wear at home if you weren’t traveling. If it is not something you would choose to wear at home, even if it is “travel clothes”, don’t bring it. You want to be comfortable and feel good on your trip. Try to keep your packing list confined to things you would normally wear.

FAQ: Travel Clothes for Women over 50

Still have questions about what you should pack in your travel capsule if you’re over 50? We have some tips to help you keep your wardrobe and your travel outfits both comfortable and stylish while you’re traveling abroad.

What should you not wear over 50?

If you’ve been looking around online for some style tips as a mature woman, you may have seen articles telling you what not to wear. We don’t really like these kinds of blog posts because we think you should wear what makes you comfortable, not what someone else thinks you should wear. If you feel confident wearing something, don’t let the internet tell you that it’s “too young” for you.

How can I look trendy at 50?

A big part of looking trendy when you’re 50 or older is starting with a good set of basics. We mentioned this in our guide to packing the ultimate travel capsule, but it’s true for real life as well. Some good basics to have are a stylish pair of jeans or black pants and a few solid-colored shirts. You can accessorize your outfits with different pairs of shoes, jewelry, and outerwear. Keep up with fashion trends if you want, but you can never go wrong with a classic style.

What style should a 50-year-old woman wear?

Again, classic styles are always a great way to go when you’re searching for a more mature style, especially while traveling. It is possible to achieve both comfort and style over 50! You can make the classic items in your wardrobe more suited to comfort if you want, that won’t make them any less stylish.

Best Comfortable and Chic Travel Outfits for Women Over 50

March 22, 2023 By Cindy Hattersley 46 Comments

I want my travel clothes to be stylish, but I also like to pack pieces that I can wear multiple ways many times to create different looks . Travel outfits in my opinion should be as wrinkle resistant as possible with the ability to layer. Let’s talk about the Best Comfortable and Chic Travel Outfits for Women Over 50.

What to Pack

If you take a few black and white pieces, add your favorite pop of color, and fun accessories you can easily create a travel wardrobe that fits in a carry on for a five-seven day trip. I would shoot for taking two pairs of shoes and maybe a pair of sandals or flip flops depending on the time of year. Sneakers apparently are “de rigueur” with everything these days. I have linked all available items or similar at the bottom of the post.

COMFORTABLE CHIC TRAVEL OUTFITS OVER 50

I would take the five organic terry pieces that I featured in my post How to Make Sweatpants Look Chic Over 50 and add two key pieces from Alembika, the Kylie Jacket and their Iconic Stretch Jeans. You can use the code CINDY20 for 20% off .

A lembika sent me this great Kylie jacket and I am in love! I am wearing it with their iconic stretch jeans , gelato sneakers , (I buy mine locally at shoe tree Paso Robles) michael stars tee ,and an older MJ Wallace bag. This jacket is wrinkle resistant and could be styled numerous ways. I would wear this on my travel days without jewelry so you can clear airport security easily.

cindy hattersley in travel friendly Alembika Jacket & Pants

The Kylie jacke t is great for layering. You could also add a scarf or a cashmere wrap for extra warmth on the plane. It could also be worn as a dress during your stay with sneakers or dressed up with a pair of flats.

When Alembika suggested these iconic stretch jeans I wasn’t sure about them. She said they are one of our best sellers. Yael the owner designer said I think you will love them. She was right. The fabric is flattering, forgiving, and comfy. They have enough weight to keep you warm on the plane but are lightweight enough to be worn like this on a warmer day.

I am wearing my favorite Michael Stars t-shirt in white here with the iconic jeans. I like this Michaels Stars tee because it has 3/4 sleeves, a much more flattering length for women my age.

Alembika Iconic Stretch Jean-travel outfit-cindy hattersley

Here I styled the Kylie jacket with a red Michaels Stars tee and the Eileen Fisher organic cotton terry crops that I love. The huge pockets are big enough to hold an ipad! I normally try to wear the same thing going and coming when traveling. I would wear which ever pair of pants were less for the wear!

All of these Eileen Fisher french terry items (except for the long jacket below) are on sale so now is a good time to pick them up. I know many of you have and love them. If our weather was more normal for this time of year, I would be living in these pieces.

Here I am wearing the Eileen Fisher Organic Terry Pants & Sweatshirt with a linen scarf. You could easily add a lightweight cotton or Cashmere shawl as well .

My friend Wren featured here on Ageless Style, turned me on to these Olukai sneakers . She said she wore them all over Europe. They are great for Summer because they are perforated and the backs can also be worn down if you are prone to blisters.

Here is an example of how you can “dress up” sweats. If I were on a 5 day trip I would probably not bring these leopard mules although they don’t take up much space. I would replace them with a pair of birdies that could be worn with the Alembika Kylie jacke t as a dress for dinner out. This fun horn jewelry is lightweight and takes up little space. My pair of sunglasses are from Specs by Kyla in Atascadero. from Alba Optics . These are super lightweight and would be great for travel.

I have really become fond of the crossbody/ waist bag. Although I never carry them on my waist. I have the Athleta Excursion bag in black and I carry it nearly everyday. It is big enough for a small bottle of water, sun glasses and wallet. It also comes in pink and white if black is too boring for you. This price-friendly old navy sweatshirt and amazon sweatpants could be substituted for the Eileen Fisher if price is a concern. The amazon pants have good reviews and the old navy sweatshirt is a favorite of mine. You can tuck in a pair of yoga pants or leggings easily as well for hiking, workouts and walks.

SHOP THE POST

If you are packing for a five-seven day trip the key is to keep your travel capsule wardrobe simple, so it will all fit in your luggage. A neutral color scheme is best. I added in a pop of color for fun. I kept the jewelry and accessories simple. If you were traveling on a business trip you would need to substitute some skirts or dresses or a blazer. A swimsuit could be added if there will be a pool. This trip is meant to be a short casual trip so keep the packing list simple. You can always add a sweater or two, and scarves take up very little space.

Just a note to readers that I held my breath and ordered the VERY expensive Frank & Eileen Carmel Travel Set and was so disappointed. I travel a great deal but I hesitate even leaving the house in this it looks so unflattering. No shape to the top whatsoever. Bottoms too wide at the bottom even for flare. Over $400 for this?

Thank you so much for sharing. I hope you did not think I recommended that? It is very similar to the Eileen Fisher that I did recommend and am very happy with. I wear them all the time.

Love everything about this, and you look great in each outfit! You show so much versatility and I’ve saved this to use as a reference for future travel! (Wow – love that Kylie jacket) Hope you’re staying safe (and dry) with all the rain.

Isn’t that Kylie jacket wonderful? I had a similar jacket from Artful Home that I must have left somewhere. This is a great replacement!

Love this post Cindy – I have never been able to pack successfully with a capsule. Every time I see one of these posts, I think “maybe next time”. I am usually traveling with Chip on business, so we have to pack for pool/beach, sightseeing, hiking/jogging/biking and then dinners at night! Whew. If I won the lottery, I would hire a cook and a packer….🤣

March 23, 2023 at 7:26 am

The other issue is how unpredictable the weather can be. We traveled to Italy the year it snowed and was freezing cold. I packed a pair of flip flops for the shower etc., and ended up wearing them the entire time. I never wore my boots once!

March 24, 2023 at 9:04 am

I hear you! My weather app was completely wrong for Hawaii in January and for Charleston in March!

March 23, 2023 at 7:28 am

Thank you, yes Edward Tedeschi is really good. I highly recommend him. Anyone unhappy with their stylist that is coming to the area might benefit from scheduling an appointment with him and have your hairdresser try and copy the cut.

Love all of your black and white outfits with pops of red! I’m interested in the Michael Stars tee, but not sure if sizing… What size do you wear?

March 23, 2023 at 7:29 am

I wear a small but think a medium would work as well. I have never shed the covid pounds unfortunately. I need to get back to weight watchers!

Fabulous post! I love it. But I really wanted the Michael Stars T shirt in red. I need it and only available in sizes too small or too big. Maybe I can settle for black.

Thanks for the great post Cindy. Now if the weather improves I could wear things like this. Stuck in my winter wardrobe!

Darn it! I can see you in that red tee…check eBay and poshmark. I just picked up a brand new black one there!

I bought a pair of black pants, comfy tie waist with large zipper pockets from Target. I keep my passport, drivers license, global entry card with me at all times zipped up in my pants. Easy access to my cards, no digging in my purse. I do black white and tan with animal print scarves etc.

March 22, 2023 at 8:07 am

I totally agree with your recommendation for packing black and white. I usually will wear comfy black stretchy pants while on the plane, with white t-shirt. Lots of mixing and matching during the trip, yes, simple, non-expensive jewelry, a pair of jeans, comfy tennis shoes (be sure you bring a “matched” pair, not like me who accidentally packed two different pairs of white tennis shoes and had to buy a pair for the rest of the trip!) LOL!

' src=

March 22, 2023 at 7:37 am

super cute! You look adorable in everything, but I think my fave is the white Eileen Fisher top and cropped pants! Flattering and I love the white with your hair. We are renting a house in Carmel by the Sea for a month and I am really trying to pull together a bunch of cute things to take me through beach walks, dinners out, babysitting etc.. I think the Eileen Fisher outfit will be perfect (Frank and Eileen has a similar one I am eyeing, too) Thanks, as always, for your inspiration!

Since I don’t wear black, white or navy, perhaps beige (I’m of fall coloration) brown and red? Love your casual style. And your smile.

Thanks for sharing your vast wisdom.

' src=

March 22, 2023 at 9:11 am

I’m with you there, Rose. Great collection but not the colours I can wear. I ‘d choose a warm beige as the base, wear brown leathers, and scarlet red & olive for colour pops. Black has been relegated to a few items, with colour around my face. White is too harsh for me. I have been having a lot of fun editing my clothes to wear mostly warm rich fall colours …I love colour! This collection is so helpful, but interchangeable with what works for each of us personally. A good reminder of editing before you close that suitcase 🧳 Thanks, Cindy

This is so timely. I too have a black and white wardrobe with accents of red. My husband looked at your list and said you must have been in my closet! We are headed for Europe for a Rhine River cruise in May. I’ve been playing around with my wardrobe and discovered your post. I am Asian so the red accents are easy to come by. I already have similar items in my closet and I have come up with similar items. Our styles are similar. Thank you for this post. What is the link for the red purse you have in this capsule?

March 24, 2023 at 7:39 am

The purse is no longer available. It is MJ Wallace. I linked a very similar one. MJ Wallace is no doing one similar in pink…not my thing. I am so glad you found some inspiration and have a fabulous time on that cruise1. I can’t wait for Steve to get off his scooter so we can travel again! Going to Stanford today!

Clever Capsule Wardrobe: Stylish Travel Clothes for Women Over 50

Capsule Wardrobe Travel Clothes for Women

I know that for most of us, travel isn’t in the cards right now. With the recent spike in cases, most of us have resigned ourselves to the fact that if we didn’t make a quick trip earlier this summer, we probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to travel to destinations unknown for a while longer. But darn it, that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about it and plan ahead. Because as bleak as things might have seemed over the last year, there’s going to come a time when Covid isn’t at the top of our conversation list.

I decided to look ahead to future times when I get to pack a bag and hit the road. I began to daydream about where I’d like to go and what adventures I’d like to experience. That got me reminiscing about my favorite trips that I’ve been on in the past. One lifelong highlight was a family vacation cruising to Costa Maya and Belize. Now, I am not sure how many of you have ever cruised before, but if you have- you know how small the rooms can be. Even the cruise staff crack jokes about it, and with 4 of us to a cabin, plus all our luggage and its contents, you can only imagine the tight fit.

The funny thing is, on this particular ship, the bathrooms were quite spacious! My point of all this is it got me thinking that although travel is fun and relaxing, packing and what to wear can be a real source of frustration. We all want comfort and function in our travel clothes, but they need to still be fashionable, or at least look halfway decent in all those vacation photos. So, unless you travel Downton Abbey style, butler included, you are schlepping and packing your luggage yourself.

Capsule It!

Building a capsule wardrobe is one of the best ways to save space, lighten your luggage load, and still look great. Creating clothing capsules is a clever and easy way to travel with fashion versatility. Once you get the idea of how capsules work, you’ll be able to plan your style and function around them and give yourself tons of options. Best of all, you’ll save space in your luggage for all the shopping you will do on your trip!

A capsule is a group of 5-12 pieces that work in combination with each other.

Travel Capsule

If your travel wardrobe is too cluttered, cleverly use the formula below to help pair it down, which will also make deciding what to wear so much easier.

Tips to Capsule Travel Clothes for Women Over 50

1. start packing 1-2 weeks before your trip..

This gives you plenty of time to create your wardrobe and map out when you might be wearing each outfit. I personally will jot down each outfit for each day or activity. This is the key to not overpack. Look at your itinerary and plan accordingly.

We love the Pack This! Pad, from Knock Knock, $7, to be able to visualize your needs easily.

Knock Knock Pack This Pad

2. Packing for changing temperatures can be bulky, so unless you are heading to a cold-weather destination, my favorite piece to pack to ward off a chill is a cashmere wrap.

It packs lightly, can keep you warm, especially if you layer, and it doubles as a modesty piece that you can wear to cover your shoulders when visiting cultural churches, temples, or other sacred places.

JCREW Oversized Cashmere Wrap

3. Take 1 medium/large carry-on tote with essentials such as a book, electronics, I.D., and other items you do not want to chance left in your checked luggage, and a small crossbody bag that you can use as your day bag on your sightseeing excursions.

This way, you can leave your larger bag in the hotel and only carry the bare minimum out and about for the day. The smaller crossbody can double for your wallet in the larger tote.

Madewell Medium Transport Tote

4. Let’s talk neutral shoes, as these little beauties are essential to a great trip.

Shoes are necessary for every vacation, but they can take up a lot of space in your luggage – and comfort is a must! I opt for shades of neutral, specifically nude, so they go with everything, or you can do a pop of color if you are keeping your outfits neutral. For the heel-loving ladies like me, the best bet is a wedge, as they can easily pair with dresses, shorts, or pants. Nude or black walking wedges  and Gladiator Wedges are two great choices. If flats are more your style, then look for something that can easily transition from your all-day outfits to dresses for your evening dinner. This pointy toe Vionic flat makes a great choice, and with so many colors and space-saving styles, you can easily fit a few pairs in.

Madewell Sidewalk Low-Top Sneakers in Leather

5. Lastly, choose pieces from your travels that you love to be in and that are comfortable.

Think of items you would wear at home. While I’m traveling, I love to find shawls and pashminas or a unique piece of jewelry as a useful memento of my trip – it saves space in my luggage on the way there, it is an easy keepsake to bring home. It is also something you can wear back home to remember your trip.

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

  • 1 x Jacket/Cardigan/Pashmina
  • 4 x Pants/Skirts/Shorts
  • 8 x Tops (includes t’s for layering)
  • Stay neutral, so they go with each outfit. I love nude or tan shoes.
  • Accessories are a great way to change up your capsule, and they don’t take up a lot of space, so have fun here!
  • Don’t forget to add other essentials such as swimwear , workout wear , coat, or even gloves depending on your destination/weather.
  • Substituting a dress instead of a top or bottom will reduce the total number of outfits. You may want to add a dress in as an additional piece to increase your variety, but remember it must work with the jacket/cardigan.
  • Look to find a common color in patterns, so mixing is easier. Bottoms in shades of neutral such as black, navy, or tan can go with everything. Each piece should be able to be mixed and matched with at least 3 other pieces in your packed wardrobe (except for the accessories).

While an actual trip might not be on the near horizon, sale opportunities are on the way. As you think about what you’d pack in a travel capsule wardrobe, you might find that there are some gaps in your options. Take advantage of upcoming Labor Day sales or even look ahead to Black Friday for the chance to fill the gaps while saving some money. It never hurts to plan ahead and even allow yourself to dream of sitting beach-side somewhere, sipping a tropical drink.

Planning a tropical getaway? Don’t sweat it – we’ve got your wardrobe covered! We’ve curated an essential list of tropical vacation outfits and tips for for your paradise escape. Say goodbye to outfit stress and hello to effortless style under the sun!

February 19, 2024 //  by  Jo Castro Leave a Comment

Are you wondering what to pack for a tropical vacation? Can’t decide what to wear for holiday in humid weather? Find out in today’s ultimate guide to tropical vacation outfits. Discover how to choose the best tropical vacation outfits based on my own recommendations from time spent living and holidaying in Australia, South East Asia, and the South Sea Islands.

Tropical Vacation Outfits for Women Over 50

Welcome to the ultimate guide on how to dress for your next tropical getaway!

For your next vacation, picture yourself lounging on a pristine beach, sipping a fruity cocktail in an open-sided beach bar, or perhaps walking energetically on an interesting sightseeing excursion, while the sun kisses your skin, but you keep cool in your holiday clothes.

Let’s jump right into some essential tropical vacation outfits and resort wear, whether for town and country or beach or city, especially for women in the prime of their life.

Blond woman smiling in a sunny garden. She is wearing a red and white outfit suitable for a tropical vacation.

To start off, I’m going to say that in order to make the most of your next beach vacation or sightseeing trip in the tropics, you’ll want to pack mostly casual attire that gives you an effortless look, combining style with comfort.

And I do agree with Vivienne Westwood who once said : “If you love something, wear it all the time. Find things that suit you. This is how you look extraordinary.”

From breezy cover-ups to chic swimwear, the outfit ideas I’m sharing today will keep you looking and feeling cool under the sun, and will hopefully become clothes you’ll definitely want to wear all the time.

Calm, Cool and Collected Choices

I alway say, “choose loose fitting dresses when you can”.

I like to pack a couple of easy wear, non crease knee length dresses.

Personally I prefer a little arm coverage too. After all, the less skin exposed means the less suncream you need to apply.

blond woman wearing dark sunglasses and an emerald colored dress. She is illustrating an outfit suitable for a tropical vacation.

Are Maxi Dresses a Good Choice for Vacation Wear?

When it comes to tropical vacation outfits, maxi dresses are a must-have.

These flowy, floor-length dresses are not only stylish but also incredibly comfortable in hot weather.

Opt for lightweight materials like cotton or linen to keep you cool during long days spent exploring.

Blond woman standing by a fence at sunset illustrating a maxi dress suitable to pack as one of your tropical vacation outfits.

You could pair your maxi dress with strappy sandals and a straw hat for an effortlessly chic look that transitions seamlessly from beach to bar.

Wear the Shorts!

You are not too old to wear shorts! If you feel comfortable, then the sky’s your limit.

Find a style that suits your body shape and then buy them in different colours.

Take a look at the funky, fashionable designs at Salty Crush . I love the beachy feels!

Are Two-Piece Sets Versatile?

For a beach outfit that provides a versatile and trendy option, consider packing two-piece sets for your tropical getaway.

Whether it’s a matching crop top and skirt or a coordinating top and shorts combo, two-piece sets offer endless styling possibilities and new looks when teamed with other garments.

Look for sets in vibrant summer brights or playful tropical prints to embrace the vacation vibe.

Wear them with flip-flops or sneakers and you’re set to go.

Best Swimsuits for Tropical Vacations

A bathing suit is going to be your most staple garment, and if you’re not into bikinis anymore then a great option is a classic wrap style one piece suit that is forgiving around the tummy area. I also like swimsuits with short skirts which can give you more confidence as you step out around the resort pool or the beach area.

Look out for new arrivals of swimsuits when they hit the stores at the end of winter and beginning of summer (if you want the best choices) but if you’re bargain hunting then think about buying your resort swimwear in the winter sales.

Also bear in mind that best sellers are probably best for a good reason, so give them a try.

My tip is not to skimp on your swimwear, because a good swimsuit will last – and not stretch or look flabby as cheaper options might after a few wears and washes.

Swimsuit Coverups

No beach vacation outfit is complete without a stylish swimsuit cover-up. In the cover-ups category your packing list should include things like breezy kaftans, and flowy sarongs.

Cover-ups are essential for transitioning from the beach to a beachside bar with ease. Opt for lightweight materials like chiffon or voile that provide coverage without weighing you down.

For a casual yet chic look, pair your swimsuit cover-up with a straw bag and flip flops.

Have a look at the wide selection of reasonably priced swimsuit coverups on Amazon.

Slip Dresses

Effortlessly chic and oh-so-comfortable, slip dresses are perfect for hot weather destinations and can be used as a swimsuit coverup as well.

You might choose silky luxe dresses that glide over your skin, or cotton or linen dresses to help you stay cool and stylish in the tropical heat.

Choose a slip dress in a vibrant summer print or classic white for a timeless beach vacation look. Layer with a lightweight kimono or denim jacket for cooler evenings.

Wide Leg Pants

Wide leg pants are a cooler option than jeans or leggings in tropical climates. They allow the air to circulate and you’ll find them in all kinds of gorgeous styles and colors. This style can take you from day to night, and wide leg pants are also a good option to wear as cover-up pants when the sun’s UV is at its highest.

Blond woman wearng white blouse and floral wide leg pants. She is illustrating what to pack, and some of the best tropical vacation outfits for hot steamy holidays.

Wrap Dresses

Flattering and feminine, wrap dresses are a versatile option for tropical vacations. The adjustable waist tie allows you to customize the fit, while the lightweight material keeps you comfortable in the heat.

Opt for a wrap dress in a bold tropical print or a solid color for a timeless look that can take you from beach to resort dinners with ease.

Now that you have some outfit ideas for your next beach vacation, let’s talk about how to select the best tropical vacation outfits.

How to Choose the Best Tropical Vacation Outfits

Keep these tips in mind when you’re buying outfits for your tropical vacation.

Consider Lightweight Materials

When choosing outfits for your tropical getaway, prioritize lightweight materials like cotton, linen, and chiffon. These fabrics are breathable and will keep you cool even on the hottest days.

Woman standing on a balcony looking out to sea. She is wearing a blue cotton dress. It is a good choice for a tropical vacation.

Think about Length and Style

Don’t be afraid of wearing a shorter length dress.

In hot steamy weather it’s nice not to have fabric clinging around your legs.

If you are happy wearing shorts, then you can also wear a dress that sits above your knee – and still step out with confidence.

Woman sitting on an antique bench in Penang, Malaysia. She is wearing a short floral dress. It's an ideal choice to pack as one of your tropical vacation outfits.

Opt for Versatile Pieces

Select versatile pieces that can easily mix and match to create multiple outfits.

Two-piece sets, maxi dresses, and slip dresses are great options that offer endless styling possibilities.

Linen shorts and linen blouses in white, camel or ivory can easily be mixed and matched.

Woman wearing a linen blouse and linen shorts sitting on a bench in tropical Penang.

Choose Bright Color Palettes

Embrace the vibrant spirit of the tropics by incorporating bright colors and playful prints into your wardrobe.

Tropical florals, bold stripes, and vibrant hues will add a fun and festive touch to your vacation outfits.

Woman standing by a pool in a tropical resort in Langkawi. She is wearing a pink maxi dress suitable to pack for a tropical vacation.

White dresses are always classy, but do team them with some bright and colorful accessories.

Don’t Forget Beachy Accessories

Complete your tropical vacation outfits with beachy accessories like straw hats, straw bags, colorfull tote bags, art scarves, and strappy sandals.

These accessories not only add style to your look but sun hats and scarves also provide much-needed sun protection .

Keep Footwear Simple

Focus on comfort. Forget heels unless you have a major event to go to. Most restaurants are happy if you wear open toe sandals, or sneakers.

I love FRANKIE4 sandals and sneakers, and always pop a pair in my suitcase for tropical vacations.

White sandals.

35 Best Women's Loungewear Sets to Pack on Your Next Trip

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.

Read on for 35 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Meaghan Kenny.

The LumberJane polo and short set are perfect for lazy vacation days spent shuffling around in your slippers . Each piece has raw seams along the sleeves, sides, and back that gives it a more lived-in look.

Buck Mason is at the forefront of elevated essentials. The Vintage Interloop set features an oversized crew that has a relaxed fit all around and thinly ribbed stiching on the cuffs to give more structure to the slouchy sleeves. The French terry sweatpants are slimming and so comfortable. Each set looks slightly different than the other, thanks to Buck Mason's Venice Wash technique that creates its cool, vintage look.

Kim Kardashian's shapewear and loungewear brand Skims never misses when it comes to cozy sets. The Cotton Fleece collection is a more sporty take on classic loungewear. The soft fleece shorts have an interior drawstring at the waist for a more customizable fit.

This chic pullover and sweat shorts both don the recognizable Alexander Wang logo. While the set is one of the trendiest pieces on our list, you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how soft the heavy brushed cotton terry is. Style the set with a small crossbody bag and pair of chunky dad sneakers for quick errands or walks around the city.

You can never go wrong with a simple high-waisted pant and tank top combo. The Anrabess sleeveless set is lightweight and thin, making it supremely packable in any weekender bag or carry-on. At just $30, it is one of the most affordable loungewear sets on our list.

Is there anything easier than throwing on a jumpsuit? Spanx AirEssentials jumpsuit is one of the brand's bestsellers—and it's just been restocked in more colors. We love the drawstring tie at the waist that gives the jumpsuit a more fitted and flattering look.

Traveler 's commerce producer, Paris Wilson , swears by Roots' loungewear. “I've been raving about Roots for years. It's hard to find a brand that doesn't skimp on quality,” she says. The Luxe Crew and Pintuck pant are made from a cotton and cashmere blend. While the material gives it a more chic look, the fit of the set is more relaxed and loose. This can easily be dressed up or down, and would look great with a sleek pair of white sneakers .

The loose fit of the Ramona sweatshirt compliments the brand's drawstring waist Jane shorts. The rouched terry fabric on the inside of each garment keeps you warm and cozy without overheating. As warmer days approach, the yellow dip-dye design is a must-have for your spring and summer wardrobe .

If you're looking for a more polished look, the Malibu set is for you. The set is made up of the Frank & Eileen Audrey Capelet and the Catherine Sweatpant . The Cool Stretch collection from Pact is made from breathable organic cotton. The soft, thin layers are a go-to summer fit when temperatures are high and you just want to chill inside. The tank top and shorts set comes in seven colorways and can be paired with Pact's Airplane cardigan or a cozy hoodie .

If you prefer something a little more roomy, the Oversized Tee and Harem Pant set from This is J is for you. It’s perfect for long-haul flights and road trips where comfort is at the top of your list, but you don’t want to step out in your pajamas. The soft, moisture-wicking fabric will keep you dry and comfortable whether you’re snuggled up on a train or plane.

This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .

The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.

You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. Traveler editors swear by Lunya's washable silk pajamas and cashmere Travel Set . The brand’s Silksweats complete its holy trinity of comfort. There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.

Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.

San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.

Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.

While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Shorts, Human, and Person

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, and Person

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

best travel outfits over 50

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

best travel outfits over 50

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

Image may contain: Clothing, Suit, Overcoat, Apparel, Coat, Human, and Person

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, Person, Standing, and Pants

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Dress, Human, Person, and Pants

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pajamas, Human, and Person

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

Best travel clothes for women over 50: comfort, And style.

' src=

UPDATED 10/2023. Traveling can be tricky. Especially when you are a woman over 50 or a woman at any age, actually. It’s not as easy for us as it is for younger travelers. So I have pulled together the best travel clothes for women over 50.

With long hours spent on a plane or in the car, comfort becomes a top priority. But being comfortable doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your fashion style.

To give you the best options. Options that work for you as well as give you different looks.

I do not want to be dressed up wearing high heels either. I was miserable when I traveled in heels the first time. The second time I packed you can bet those were left at home.

I love my Boho vibe. But I do want to look decent yet still be comfortable. It always surprises me when I see people flying in their pajamas.

Matter of fact? It still surprises me when I see folks wearing pajamas while shopping. I don’t think I have ever left my house in my pajamas, but I am of the “older” end of the Boomer generation.

The first time I flew in an airplane was right after high school more than 50 years ago. My husband was working for AA at the time, and we were lucky to have flight benefits.

But we had to dress nicely. Not only were we representative of the company, but we were often lucky to be moved to first-class seats. Winning if you ask me so dress nice I would.

Fast-forward to the last time I flew which was a few months ago. Life could not look more different than it did when I first started flying. We really are not allowed much space for our carry-on bags let alone those we check.

Last year I noticed no one really looked pulled together except those you could tell were flying for business. Crammed together in seats too tight.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Business casual look aside, my friends and I do agree one of the most important things is to be comfortable especially while traveling.

Baggy clothes do not feel comfortable to me. Matter of fact, they feel sloppy, almost uncomfortable.

I know many will not agree with that last sentence. While other women tell me that is exactly how they feel and would not be comfortable flying in pajamas.

Of course to each their own. I would never tell someone what they should or should not wear. I know I would not appreciate someone telling me what I should or should not wear.

If you feel the same way I do and prefer to be comfortable yet look pulled together, this article is for you. This wardrobe works not only for domestic travel but internationally to a foreign country as well.

The easiest and best  travel clothes  for women over 50 are pulled together in a travel capsule wardrobe ready to go when you are. I have placed links at the bottom of this article to help you find the perfect options for you.

What is a travel capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe of any type is a collection of basic yet key, functional clothing. And it is probably the best way not only to organize your travel wardrobe but your whole wardrobe.

When I was working in corporate and often away on a business trip, my wardrobe consisted of five suits, three pairs of pants in dark colors, three dresses, and a few basic tops.

In my closet, you would find these clothes hanging next to each other. I would pull the first outfit in line on the rack for Monday and work back from there. In the second week, I would simply swap out the tops and accessories.

For two weeks, I had outfits that I could literally pull out of the closet, slip on with shoes and accessories, and walk out the door.

Once worn, that outfit would go to the back of the line if it did not need to go to the cleaners. Then I would wear the next outfit in line the following day.

Fast-forward to my current life of teaching fitness and yoga classes as well as being a travel blogger on the road, and capsule wardrobes still work the best. Just much more comfy.

How many pieces of clothing Should A Capsule Hold For The Best travel clothes for women over 50?

The answer varies depending on who you ask or what you read. In general capsule wardrobes may have as few as 10 pieces for those that  live minimally , but often more in the range of 20 to 30 pieces.

In the summer, fewer pieces may work while during the colder, winter months you may need more pieces.

The best travel clothes are often those made of natural fiber or material such as cotton as they are the most breathable.

Unfortunately cotton can wrinkle. Who wants to pull a wrinkly dress out of their travel bag when getting ready for a nice dinner on vacation?

A good idea is to include some synthetic pieces such as polyester as they make the best travel clothes as far as not wrinkling.

I’m not a proponent of polyester but in addition to not wrinkling like cotton, they also tend to be lightweight and odor resistant.

A pair of pants in a poly blend will look much better when you arrive than a linen pair of pants. There are many options for travel pants from black pants in merino wool to travel pants that can also be used for other activities such as hiking to leggings.

I often travel in my yoga leggings or hiking pants as well as in my most comfortable shoes. These pieces travel very well, and they have lots of pockets. If pants do not have pockets, I do not buy them.

I can easily put my ticket, phone, cash, and anything else I may need quickly in my pockets. Plus they are very light, dry quickly, and affordable.

Finally, the best travel purse is one that you can carry everything you need without being too heavy. I prefer a crossbody bag that is safer but anti-theft as well. My current bag is from Baggalini and I have had it for many years.

How do you make a capsule wardrobe from scratch?

If you are beginning to pull a  capsule wardrobe together whether it is for a travel  wardrobe, business wardrobe, or day-to-day, take a look at your current style.

For those like me that are more minimal and tailored, a frilly, lace blouse probably would not be used much in our wardrobes. A loose fitting, silky blouse may work for some but for me, it would never be worn.

A good idea is to take a hard look at your closet. What do you wear most often? What do you not wear at all or very rarely?

As mature women, it is important we not only look our best but feel our best. It only takes a little bit of time to choose clothes that provide the best fit and go a long way to feeling confident in our skin.

Designing your capsule of the best travel clothes for women over 50

For me, I take fashion trends with a grain of salt and choose to start with color. Why? Fashion trends tend to be for younger bodies than where I am now in my 60s.

I tend to gravitate toward blues and blacks as far as pants, shorts, and skirts for my base layer.  I still have a black jacket in my closet I reach for it on days I need to be more pulled together.

Adding neutral colors such as these plus brown and even white, beige, and pink, makes mixing and matching easy allowing you to create different outfits.

Pops of color instantly liven up these neutrals and are perfect for tropical vacations, cruise wear, or resort wear. A little black dress can double as the best travel dress also if you choose good quality.

Skinny jeans? If you are comfortable with them and they are the perfect fit, absolutely. If not, even though they may be in fashion today, you will not wear them. It’s that simple. Comfort is number one.

I have an active lifestyle and my choices may not work for you. For me, comfortable travel clothes take precedence over fashion any day.

I always gravitate to a nice shirt or short sleeve top to make layering easier. I also choose wrinkle resistant options and my favorite pieces are the ones that always travel the best.

How about shoes? How many pairs should you pack? Again, it depends on what you will be doing on your vacation. A good option is to choose shoes that you can wear while traveling as well as when you are on vacation.

If like me, you tend to be active, you may need to pack several pairs of shoes. I often choose my workout sneakers along with a dressy pair of sandals and flip flops for the warm weather in the summer vacations. Also, consider wearing clothes with built-in sun protection.

Winter is a different ball game. I do try to avoid going north during the cold weather winter months but being a Cleveland girl, it often happens as mom still lives in Cleveland.

Again, I will have my workout shoes but also a pair of comfortable black boots that will go well with any outfit.

Pulling it all together

Cruise fashion is different from resort fashion which is way different from what you would need for a week in a cabin in the mountains. Think about your trip and what you will need.

Start with a  packing list . Write down how many days you will be traveling and how many days you will be on vacation.

I choose black pants or blue jeans for the days I am traveling. They are both great options that can also be mixed in and worn on your actual vacation.

The best travel outfits may be worn in different ways for different events. If you have great style, it will be easy for you to pull together a wardrobe of stylish travel clothes.

If you dread packing, starting with a packing list is definitely the way to go, so you can decide how many outfits you will need. You can grab mine to print out here:  What To Pack

If you are packing for a cruise, you may need a dress for the formal night. On the cabin vacation, you may not need anything dressy at all.

Next, what is your body type? If a comfortable waistline is important, on your travel days you would not want to wear a super tight pair of jeans.

What do you normally wear when you not only are comfortable but are also feeling your best? The perfect travel outfit and the best travel clothing are those that make you feel good and look good.

A favorite clothing line of mine is  Sketchers . Not only are their shoes amazing, their pants give me a great fit. And most of their clothes are wrinkle-resistant as well as many being water resistant.

What should you have in your travel clothes capsule?

Ready to pull it all together? Perfect! Separate your clothing items by day wear and night wear. Think of your color scheme and what will hold up to the rigors of travel.

Did I mention underwear yet? The best travel underwear stays in place! You do not want to be dealing with pulling underwear out from where it may have moved while sitting on a plane or in the car.

Comfortable pants  and a top, or I have found a travel dress that has a flattering fit on you is another great option. Personally, I love the options from Eileen Fisher .  My favorite piece is the washable stretch crepe pants .

Choose one that is the perfect length and long enough, so you do not need to worry about bending over. Dresses are often the best choice for travel to warmer climates.

For cold weather trips, a good pair of jeans with a nice fit and a leather jacket may be a great way to go from plane to taxi or from the car to the hotel. Add a color scarf for that pop of color.

Here are some great travel tips for clothes that will keep you comfortable and stylish on your next adventure.

1. A casual maxi dress is perfect for  travel any time of the year . Throw on a cardigan or jacket for cooler weather and add a colorful scarf or shawl for extra warmth. Eddie Bauer has some great dresses for travel including tank dresses and t-shirt dresses. Both travel very well.

2. A pair of comfortable pants, like yoga pants or leggings, can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Pair them with a cute top and jacket for a put-together look.  Fabletics  has a great intro offer for yoga pants and leggings as well as Eileen Fisher mentioned above.

3. A skirt is a great option for travel, especially if you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Choose a comfortable material like cotton or dark blue denim, and pair it with a cute top. For plus size women, Lane Bryant offers great options for not only travel, but office looks as well.

4. If you’ll be doing a lot of sightseeing, consider wearing comfortable sneakers or flats. You can also pack a pair of sandals or dress shoes for evening outings.

5. Don’t forget to pack a few essential accessories. A hat can protect you from the sun, and a scarf can keep you warm on cool evenings.

A travel-sized bag is perfect for carrying your essentials, and a pair of sunglasses will help shield your eyes from the glare.

I’m a Boho Bag gal myself. The bigger, the better because I can squeeze so much into those bags.

I have everything I may need on the plane or in the car nearby but can slip the handles of the bag over my suitcase and wheel away.

A good bag or purse that has many pockets both inside and outside the bag is best. That allows you to easily secure your phone, lip balm, ticket, and more within easy reach when you need it until you get to your final destination.

With these travel outfit ideas and helpful tips, you’ll be comfortable and stylish on your next trip. Pack your bags and get ready for an adventure. You deserve it.

What to Look for When Choosing Travel Pants

When searching for the perfect travel pants, several key features can enhance your comfort and style on the road. Consider the following factors to ensure you find pants that meet the unique demands of travel:

Comfortable Fabric

Opt for breathable, stretchy fabrics that provide ease of movement. Materials like cotton blends, synthetic fabrics with stretch, or moisture-wicking materials are ideal for various climates and activities.

Wrinkle Resistance

Choose pants that resist wrinkles to keep you looking polished even after hours of wear or being packed in a suitcase. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics such as synthetic blends or certain cotton weaves can help maintain a neat appearance.

Versatility

Look for pants that can easily transition from casual to more formal occasions. Versatile styles can save space in your luggage and allow you to adapt to different settings without sacrificing comfort.

Functional Pockets

Ample, well-placed pockets are invaluable for storing essentials like a phone, passport, or small travel accessories. Pants with zippered or secure pockets can add an extra layer of security for your belongings.

Quick Drying

If you anticipate being in humid or wet conditions, quick-drying pants are a game-changer. Fabrics with moisture-wicking properties or those designed for fast drying will keep you comfortable in various climates.

Adjustable Features

Pants with adjustable waistbands or drawstrings offer flexibility in fit, accommodating changes in body shape due to different climates or culinary indulgences during your travels.

Opt for well-constructed pants with reinforced seams to withstand the rigors of travel. Durable materials will ensure your pants remain in good condition through multiple adventures.

Security Features

Some travel pants come with hidden or secure pockets, providing an added layer of protection for valuables. This feature can be particularly useful in crowded or unfamiliar settings.

By considering these factors, you can find travel pants that not only meet your comfort and functional needs but also enhance your overall travel experience.

I would deeply appreciate a clear indication of which products are made from natural materials and which add plastic or non-degradable materials to our environment. I believe many of us are more concerned with helping to stem the production of man made non-biodegradable materials that hurt our environment, than we are with avoiding wrinkles. Cotton is comfortable and durable.

Tips for Choosing Travel Outfits for Women Over 50

Tips for Choosing Travel Outfits for Women Over 50

  • Styling Tips

Tips for Choosing Travel Outfits for Women Over 50

Picking the perfect outfit for a night out or a visit with new friends can be tricky enough; picking the right outfit for an extended trip presents added challenges and questions, such as:

  • How much can you realistically fit in your suitcase?
  • What type of weather will you encounter?
  • What type of activities will you be doing?

When you have your whole closet at your disposal, everything is right within reach. But packing for travel requires careful planning and critical thinking. Fear not, fellow globetrotter! We’re here to help make choosing your travel outfits easy and breezy.

Choosing the Right Fabrics

Comfort is key when it comes to the best travel outfits for women of any age, but especially travel outfits for a 60 year-old woman or older. When it comes to fabric type , we recommend choosing stretchy and/or breathable fabrics such as:

  • Jersey material
  • Viscose (also known as rayon)

Another consideration is how easily the fabric wrinkles. For example, linen tends to wrinkle very easily — but it also is extremely breathable.

Many women love burnout tops for travel because they use a blend of comfortable fabrics that have been chemically treated for a light, sheer, easy breezy look and feel.

A brunette woman in a floral dress laughs as she stands against a wall

Choosing the Right Outfit

Traveling is fun once you get to your intended destination, but the process of travel itself can be riddled with delays and disappointments.

Not only is airline travel in particular often an all-day or even multi-day affair, but there’s also security to go through. For many travelers, the added time and effort associated with unlacing shoes and removing belts and watches is simply not worth the hassle.

For this reason, we recommend choosing outfits that are flowy and comfy to wear all day long. For pants, that often means stretchy drawstring waistbands. For shirts, that may mean long-sleeved shirts that you can roll up or roll down to stay comfortable. The key here is to wear clothing that makes going through TSA easier and less stressful.

Even if you’re taking a road trip, you should consider comfort in addition to style as road trips can involve hours upon hours of sitting, not to mention traffic delays.

Stylish and Comfortable Bottoms

The best travel outfits for ladies are often outfits with a comfy blouse and pants or leggings. While dresses can be comfortable, there’s the added worry of sitting a certain way when wearing them in public, and of course, there’s the issue of rubbing thighs. If you do choose to wear a dress for long travel, then wearing leggings or tights underneath is often a good idea.

For most women over age 50, it’s preferable to wear pants with a stretchy elastic waistband for comfort and ease of movement.

Here are five pairs of travel-friendly pants to consider on your next trip:

1. Zac and Rachel Solid Ankle-Length Jogger Pant

2. Sea Breeze Crinkle Button Tab Crop Pant

3. Dash Emma Pull-On Ruched Capri Pant

4. Zac and Rachel Pull-On Millennium Pant

5. Jess and Jane Mineral Wash Pull-On Ankle Pant

Versatile Tops for Travel

When it comes to travel tops, choosing pieces that are versatile and easily layered is key. Both basic short-sleeve t-shirts and more elegant short-sleeve blouses offer comfort and the option to layer with a sweater, cardigan, or shawl . That way, you’re prepared for either hot or cold temperatures.

Another tip is to choose transitional tops that you can wear during the day as well as at night — especially if you have activities planned for the night of your travel plans.

Here are five different versatile Anthony’s tops for travel:

1. Anthony's Resort Wear Solid UPF50+ Ruffle Sleeveless Knit Top

2. Kaktus V-Neck Linen Tee

3. N Touch Classic Side Shirred Knit Top

5. Escape by Habitat Clothing Slub-Knit Short Sleeve Seamed Tunic

5. Ana Clare Mercedes Solid Short Sleeve Polo Top

Comfortable Footwear Options

When it comes to travel clothing, many people focus on tops and bottoms and forget about footwear. But choosing your footwear carefully is extremely important. After all, depending on whether you’re traveling via bus, cruise ship, airplane, or car, you could be on your feet for extended periods of time…And then there's the TSA to consider if you have to take your shoes off. So don’t neglect your footwear!

We recommend comfortable and versatile options such as:

  • Slip-on sneakers
  • Supportive flats
  • Supportive sandals that can be easily taken on and off

Not only is the pair you wear during travel important but so too are the pairs you bring in your suitcase- make sure that they are easily packable and coordinate well with a variety of looks.

Practical Accessories for Travel

Accessories are the finishing touches that often make an outfit truly special. So although you may prioritize comfort over style when it comes to choosing tops and bottoms (although you certainly don’t have to), the accessories you pair your clothing with can add visual appeal and a dash of style! We recommend items such as:

  • Scarves and wraps
  • Comfortable and colorful costume jewelry
  • Crossbody bags (can be used as your “personal item” for airline travel)

Pieces are typically made from breathable materials, such as cotton, silk, straw, and microfiber, while patterns tend to be either bright and fun, like you’d see on a Hawaiian shirt, or classic, such as nautical print.

How should I dress for a resort?

It’s your vacation, so you should dress however makes you happy! That said, if you’re headed someplace sunny, you’ll probably want several swimsuits, a few swim cover-ups, a sun hat, and sandals. You’ll also want some lightweight, flowy dresses, pants or skirts, and tops. Make sure you have at least one outfit that feels fancy enough to wear out to a nice dinner, and plenty of pieces that are easy to pair and wear anywhere your adventure happens to take you.

What’s the best resort wear for women over 50?

Since resort wear shows off a lot more skin than, say, your comfy winter sweatpants , you’ll want pieces that are supportive, comfortable, and of course, stylish.

While some women over 50 will be more than happy to show off their bodies in an itsy-bitsy bikini and shorts , others may prefer pieces with a bit more coverage. One-piece swimsuits or tankinis (Buy from L.L. Bean , $65), which have an elongated, tank top-like cut, are slightly more conservative. You can also throw a cover-up over your suit for a bit of added modesty and sun protection.

Cropped pants or shorts with a 7 or 5-inch cut (Buy from Tommy Bahama , $90) will keep you cool without riding up your backside, and oversized hats will keep aging skin safe from the sun’s harmful rays.

Regardless of your age, however, the best resort wear will consist of the pieces you feel the most attractive and confident in. We’ve chosen a wide selection of breezy finds that will be suitable for whatever activities your vacation may bring, whether you’re strolling the beach or lounging in a hammock.

Ready to trade in your winter boots for flip flops and your sweaters for tunics? You’ve come to the right place. Keep scrolling to shop our picks for the best resort wear for women over 50.

The Best Resort Wear For Women Over 50

Look into the sun maxi dress.

Best Resort Wear For Women Over 50

Buy from Free People, $98

Why we like it:

Summer is the time to show some skin, and it doesn’t get much sexier than this gorgeous halter dress. The Look Into The Sun Maxi is the perfect blend of elegant and fun, making it a great option for nights spent dining and dancing. Although the flowy bottom looks airy light, the material is substantial enough to keep everything in one place if a breeze comes your way. The top is adjustable, and there are some subtle slits on the side. Flattering to both small chested ladies, as well as the busty, you’ll love how the rayon material skims your curves.

Editor’s review: “I love a halter dress, so I was excited to try this one sent to me from Free People! As you may already know, halter dresses are universally flattering to all bust sizes. I also love a maxi, and was pleasantly surprised by the weight of this one. Some dresses with a guazy look feel really flimsy, but not this one! I could feel the quality as soon as I tried it on, and I know I’d be comfortable wearing this to a fancy summer wedding or resort restaurant. I tried a small, and it fit great. I don’t have much in the bust department, so I really appreciated how I could adjust the straps and cups to cover me. You don’t need a bra with it, but I still think I’ll invest in some push-up pasties when I wear this out on the town. The dress is long, and even with my 3.5-inch heels the back dragged, so unless you’re very tall (I’m five-foot-five), you may want to have it hemmed. Is it worth it? Uh, yes! It’s simply too lovely to pass up.”

The best travel dresses make it easy to throw together outfits while allowing you to pack fewer pieces. They can be dressed up or down for casual, fancy, and professional occasions. You can wear them on travel days and, depending on the material, potentially multiple times during your trip — even without access to a washing machine.

We scoured the internet and checked our own closets to compile options for every style, season, and activity. From sophisticated shirt dresses, sweater dresses, and wraps to breezy sundresses, maxis, and sporty athleisure numbers, you'll find the perfect frock here.

Best Overall

Quince mongolian cashmere sleeveless midi sweater dress.

This endlessly versatile dress can be worn year-round, in any weather, and you can style it with various layers, outerwear, and shoes.

The brand recommends hand washing it and laying it flat to dry.

You can count on Quince for well-made wardrobe staples at accessible price points. The brand carries lots of high-quality, relatively low-maintenance cashmere pieces, like this travel-friendly dress. It features a sleeveless, midi-length cut and a fisherman sweater knitting pattern.

Suitable for all four seasons, this dress can be layered under a cardigan, blazer, jean jacket, or shawl, worn over a snug-fitting turtleneck or thin T-shirt, or rocked as-is in warm weather. It also pairs well with various shoe styles, including boots, sandals, casual or dressy flats , block heels, and wedges.

Since cashmere (a type of wool sourced from goats) is naturally odor-resistant, you can wear this dress more than once between washes — and pack fewer items for your trip. The soft, breathable material won't wrinkle or crease in your suitcase, either. But bear in mind hand washing is recommended.

Best Budget

Amazon essentials above-the-knee dress.

With a laidback athleisure style, this sweatshirt dress is great for daytime wear or hanging out at your rental.

It doesn't have pockets.

If you're on a budget, look no further than Amazon. This affordable frock features a classic crew neckline, long sleeves, and an above-the-knee cut. The laidback style is essentially a sweatshirt dress, so consider wearing it with sneakers, slides, or another sporty sandal style. You can wear it en route to your destination, out and about during the day, or while padding around your vacation rental. We wish it had pockets, but for this price, we're not complaining.

The Details: XS to 2XL | Cotton, polyester

Best Size-inclusive

Skims long sleeve dress.

It comes in nine sizes, and the buttery fabric stretches to twice its size to ensure a fit every time.

Popular sizes and styles sell out frequently.

Skims is among today's most size-inclusive brands. Not only does this dress come in nine sizes (ranging from 2XS to 4X), but like other pieces from the Fits Everybody line, the unbelievably flexible, body-molding fabric stretches to double its size. Plus, it resists wrinkles and takes up minimal suitcase space. We also appreciate that the dress offers subtle shaping effects, cinching the waist and smoothing the arms and hips. Unfortunately, popular sizes and colors sell out frequently, but if you can snag this dress in your size, you won't regret it.

The Details: 2XS to 4X | Polyamide, elastane

Best Short-sleeve

Everlane short-sleeve dress.

The timeless, travel-ready Dream Dress can be dressed up or down and worn with several outerwear and footwear styles.

This style doesn't have pockets.

This timeless, elegant dress from Everlane is just the thing for your upcoming trip. It flaunts a mid-length A-line skirt, a semi-fitted bodice, and short sleeves that fall just above the elbows. You can dress it up or down, wear it day or night, and pair it with a wide range of outerwear and footwear styles — think loafers and a blazer, heeled boots and an overcoat, or flats and a denim jacket. This dress is also sustainably made with organic cotton and modal sourced from responsibly managed forests.

The Details: XS to XL | Organic cotton, modal, elastane

Best Long-sleeve

Nordstrom long sleeve shift sweatshirt dress.

This cozy, casual dress boasts a neoprene-like knit fabric that's warm but not overly heavy with wrinkle-resistant stretch.

It may not be as breathable as natural weaves.

We stand behind Nordstrom's own brand for high-quality pieces that aren't exorbitantly expensive. Case in point: this thoughtfully designed long-sleeve number. This dress features a relaxed shift silhouette, a jewel neckline, a midi-length cut with side slits, and handy pockets that are clutch for travel. The neoprene-like sweatshirt material is thick and cozy but not too heavy. And it has some stretch to it, which helps prevent wrinkles and enhances the overall comfort.

The Details: 2XS to 2XL | Polyester, rayon, spandex

Best Sleeveless

Unbound merino travel dress.

The aptly named Travel Dress is a layerable, three-season wardrobe basic that can be worn multiple times between washes.

The material may pill over time.

Unbound Merino's Travel Dress is crafted mostly from merino wool, with a touch of nylon and spandex for extra stretch and durability. As a naturally antimicrobial textile, wool repels bacteria that cause body odor, so you can wear it multiple times between washes. This makes it ideal for travel, as you can pack fewer outfits. Less frequent washing will also help prevent the material from pilling. Though the sleeveless style is a go-to for warm climates, you can also wear it in transitional weather with the right layers and accessories.

The Details: XS to XL | Merino wool, nylon, spandex

Maeve Sweater Dress

Anthropologie

The 1960s-esque Annalise Dress is flirty yet sophisticated and suitable for year-round wear.

Hand washing is recommended.

We love this flirty yet sophisticated dress from Maeve. Reminiscent of go-go dresses from the 1960s, the Annalise has a modish mock neck, nearly elbow-length sleeves, a simple shift silhouette, and patch pockets. Though it's a mini cut, the weighty, sweater-inspired material and structured shape make it suitable for year-round wear. Whether you style it with tights and an overcoat or go bare-legged with heeled sandals, you'll be dressed to impress. The fabric should resist wrinkling, but you might consider hand washing to prevent pilling or misshaping the garment.

The Details: 2XS to XL | Viscose, polyester, nylon

Free People Essential Slim Midi

Free People

This effortless T-shirt dress is super stretchy and exceptionally soft, not to mention versatile, layerable, and packable.

You'll want to wash it by hand with cold water.

Free People makes our favorite calf-length option. The Essential Slim Midi is lightweight and stretchy with a super-soft, airy feel. This semi-slim (but not too tight) T-shirt dress works as a swimsuit cover-up, resort wear, or a casual daytime outfit. The effortless design goes with sneakers, slides, wedges, platform sandals, or flats. It doesn't have pockets, but it's wrinkle-resistant and easy to pack. Just a heads up, the brand recommends hand washing this dress with cold water.

The Details: XS to XL | Polyester, viscose, elastane

Anthropologie Maxi Dress

The easy-breezy Raya Dress is just the thing for beach days, hanging by the pool, going to lunch, or attending a music festival.

Since it's 100 percent cotton, it may shrink or wrinkle in the wash.

We also like Anthropologie's Raya Dress. This easy-breezy maxi is perfect for a day at the beach, pool, or resort, but you can also wear it out to lunch, while shopping, to the farmer's market, or to a music festival. Available in four pretty colorways, the colorblock design is modern and eye-catching without sacrificing versatility. This dress is 100 percent cotton, so you can bet it's breathable and moisture-wicking. That said, it might wrinkle or shrink slightly in the wash — Anthropologie recommends hand washing.

The Details: XS to 3XL | Cotton

Best T-shirt Dress

Allsaints short sleeve maxi dress.

With a boxy silhouette and sporty details, the Anna Maxi has a casually cool vibe you'll reach for again and again while traveling.

It may shrink slightly the first time you wash it.

T-shirt dresses are excellent for travel, as they're easy to style and offer a casually cool streetwear appeal for daytime ensembles. We like this one from AllSaints. The Anna Maxi features a simple, slightly boxy silhouette, a sporty crew neckline, short cuffed sleeves, and side pockets, plus a longer cut, which makes it more seasonless. Since this dress is 100 percent cotton (of the organic variety), it might shrink a little the first time you wash it.

The Details: 00 to 12 | Organic cotton

Best Shirt Dress

Aday something borrowed dress.

The modern design has sleek, pared-down details and a professional appeal that's still laidback enough for casual outings.

It's machine washable, but line drying is recommended.

This shirt dress from Aday will make you look put-together while minimizing your time curating outfits. It's made of what the brand calls "technical silk," a sumptuously smooth, stretchy, and wrinkle-proof blend of nylon and elastane. Instead of a traditional point collar and buttons, it features a simple Mandarin collar and hidden snap fastenings down the front for a sleeker, pared-down appeal — extra points for the pockets. Whether you're traveling for business or pleasure, you won't regret packing this professional-looking yet easygoing piece.

The Details: XS to XL | Nylon, elastane

Best Sweater Dress

Faherty jackson sweater dress.

Featuring a mid-weight knit fabric and preppy details, this sweater dress is soft, cozy, and suitable for multiple seasons.

Hand washing and air drying are recommended.

Faherty's Jackson Dress can be worn in the fall, winter, or spring. Balancing a laidback vibe with preppy details, the modest, collared design is suitable for business-casual settings and leisurely activities alike. It's soft and cozy, too, thanks to the mid-weight sweater-inspired knit material. Since the cotton is blended with synthetic yarns, this dress should resist wrinkling. Still, hand washing is recommended to preserve the material.

The Details: XS to 2XL | Cotton, polyester, nylon, elastane

Best With Pockets

Foreign fare wrap me up dress.

Foreign Fare

Made with travel in mind, this non-wrinkling dress has two side pockets and a hidden zipper section big enough to fit a smartphone or passport.

It'll fall below the knees on shorter people.

The Wrap Me Up Dress was designed with travel in mind. It's made of a durable, wrinkle-resistant blend of Tencel and polyester, so you won't have to worry about creases when packing it in a suitcase. The material is also breathable, soft, and slightly drapey, which complements the subtly flowy, A-line silhouette. Best of all, it has pockets: two on the sides and one hidden zipper pocket on the front seam where you can stash your phone, ID, passport, room key, cash, or cards.

The Details: XS to 2XL | Tencel, polyester

Best Athleisure

Athleta coaster luxe sweatshirt dress.

Made of a thick, stretchy material with thumb-hole sleeves and zippered pockets, the Coaster Luxe Dress has a practical, athletic appeal.

If you prefer a slightly longer cut, consider getting the tall fit.

Athleisure was once brushed off as a passing trend of the early aughts, but the practical, non-restricting clothing style is here to stay — and it's a go-to among travelers. Athleta's Coaster Luxe Dress is made of an ultra-soft and supremely stretchy brushed sweatshirt material that'll keep you cozy while resisting wrinkles and wicking away moisture. The zippered pockets are a much-appreciated detail. You can wear this sporty frock to and from your destination, to brunch, on daily walks, while sightseeing, out shopping, or just hanging out at your hotel or vacation rental.

The Details: 2XS to 3XL | Lyocell, polyester, lycra

Most Versatile

Marine layer short sleeve midi dress.

Marine Layer

This seasonless little black dress can be layered, accessorized, and styled many ways, no matter the weather.

It only comes in one color and doesn't have pockets.

The little black dress – but make it seasonless. Marine Layer reimagined its best-selling Lexi Dress (a midi-length, sleeveless style) with a slightly thicker fabric, then added a mock neck and above-the-elbow sleeves. The result is an incredibly versatile piece you can wear in winter, spring, summer, or fall. It's a stellar evening dress for warm climates and can be layered and accessorized for transitional weather. In the cold months, wear it with tights, boots, a cardigan, and a warm overcoat.

The Details: XS to XL | Tencel lyocell, spandex

Best Day-to-night

Modern citizen yimei mock-neck side-slit dress.

Modern Citizen

This wrap-inspired dress can be worn all day, whether you have brunch, shopping, a work meeting, or a networking event on your itinerary.

You can machine wash it on a delicate cycle, but let it air dry.

During the day, the Yimei Dress can be worn with sandals or flats while shopping, out to lunch, or to a work meeting. Then throw on heels and a blazer to transition your look to evening attire for happy hour, a dinner reservation, or a networking event. It's professional and elegant but not so fancy that you'll look out of place at more casual outings. We like that it looks like a wrap dress but doesn't require any wrapping, tying, or retightening throughout the day. What's more, the soft, stretchy fabric won't wrinkle in your suitcase or on your body.

The Details: XS to 2XL | Hemp, cotton, spandex

Tips for Buying Travel Dresses

Consider versatility.

The best travel dresses are versatile. This means they can be worn in multiple seasons in different climates, layered with other pieces, easily accessorized, and styled many ways. Ideally, you'll be able to wear the dress more than once on your trip (or at least day and night), so you don't have to pack as many outfits. With this in mind, look for mid-weight fabrics, medium lengths, odor-resistant materials, and neutral hues.

Think about care instructions

You should also consider the care requirements of your travel dresses. A machine washable design is ideal, especially if you'll have access to a washing machine on your trip. But even if a dress calls for hand washing, you can clean it in your hotel room (or anywhere with a sink) and let it air dry.

Sweat-wicking and odor-resistant materials like wool, cashmere, and some performance fabrics don't need to be washed after every use. This is great for travel dresses, as you can wear them multiple times and pack fewer clothing items in your suitcase.

A wrinkle-resistant dress made of a stretchy, durable material can be folded or rolled up compactly in a suitcase. However, more delicate pieces should be carefully folded and placed on top of your other items. In some cases, a garment bag might be necessary to protect the fabric and prevent a dress from wrinkling en route.

The best materials for travel dresses are stretchy, wrinkle-resistant, breathable, and sweat-wicking. Many fabrics and textile blends have these qualities. Natural materials like wool, cotton, and viscose tend to be the most breathable, and they keep odor-causing bacteria at bay. But they're not always as durable or flexible as their synthetic counterparts.

Tencel lyocell and modal are exceptions, as they're naturally derived and inherently stretchy. Travel-friendly synthetic fibers include polyester, polyamide, elastane, nylon, lycra, and spandex.

21 Timeless and Powerful Wardrobe Essentials for Women Over 50

Marjolein Dilven

Who says you can’t dress in style in your 50s? Equipped with the right wardrobe pieces, you can look as fine as a well-aged wine.

Looking good comes from feeling confident about yourself. For women over 50, it’s a combination of proper skincare, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and wearing timeless wardrobe pieces that enhance your look.

We’ve collated several wardrobe pieces to consider on your next shopping trip. Here are some wardrobe essentials that will keep you looking good and fashionable after 50.

1. Comfortable Shoes

trendy mature woman walking Street city and wears trendy business clothes outfit, oversize jacket, tie, pants and white loafer shoes

When you’re over 50, heels are very overrated. They are tiresome and not the best for your back or knees. It’s important to feel relaxed and supported when you walk. When I see people (of any age) go on a walk with heels on, I can’t wrap my head around why. If I wear heels, I only wear them on special occasions.

Your footwear should be comfortable, and high-quality footwear is important for your posture. Shop for stylish flats and comfy sneakers. Consider stunning ankle boots and sturdy loafer shoes to be part of your wardrobe.

2. Denim Jeans

Trendy mature woman with short hair stands outdoors in city street wears youth clothing white shirt, jeans cargo pants, clutch.

Denim jeans offer a look that looks stylish to anyone. And they’re very comfortable. Find a well-fitting pair based on your shape and size.

A classic dark pair offers versatility. Choose among low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise cuts, depending on what you’re used to wearing. I always go for a high-rise model when I can. It is a lot more comfortable than low-rise models, and it looks great when I tuck my shirt in the front.

3. High-Quality Handbag

stylish mature woman in grey pant suit with jacket and turtleneck, accessorized with handbag

A good quality handbag needs to be in your wardrobe. You don’t have to be choosy about the brand as long as the quality is undeniable. You can see whether a bag is good quality or not through the zippers and even the stitches on the bag.

Get a neutral-colored handbag you can pair with all the outfits you have. Black or brown bags can easily be paired with other wardrobe pieces you plan on wearing. Get a bigger handbag for daily convenient and practical use.

4. Versatile Coat

Stylish mature woman walks near city building, wearing cargo jeans, pink floral trench coat, sunglasses and handbag.

A versatile coat can add layers during the cold season and add texture to your outfit on a warm day. Depending on your fashion preference, you can get a light trendy trench coat to wear in any season. You can also get a thicker trench coat to wear during winter, depending on where you live.

Pair your coat with jeans and trendy flat shoes or sneakers for a casual look. For something more formal and fancier, pair it with a dress and a nice pair of flats.

5. Little Black Dress

Senior woman in little black dress and red blazer MSN

Have a little black dress (LBD) in your closet for casual and formal occasions. Its neutral color makes it easy to pair with other pieces you have in the closet. For different occasions and events. For example, I’ve worn mine with accessories for a roaring 20s event and worn it to one of the biggest presentations at work. It’s extremely versatile.

Get an LBD that fits your body well for an elegant and stylish look. Add pumps to the mix and you’re ready for a fancy dinner. Wear a cardigan and flats with this classic piece for a more casual look.

6. White or Black Shirt

mature woman wearing trendy white shirt blouse

Get yourself a killer hairstyle for short hair over 50 , then pair it with some nice shades and a white or black shirt. Women over 50 can benefit from these shirts because of their simplicity and convenience. If you have a couple of high-quality T-shirts, you could even pull a Zuckerberg and look representable within minutes.

Choose which among the types of necklines, including scoop neck, crewneck, and V neckline, would be comfortable for you. Try these shirts with jeans and a jacket or cardigan.

7. Classic A-Line Skirt

Woman in a-line skirt walking MSN

Women over 50 look stunning in classic A-line skirts, which ooze femininity. Depending on the occasion and where you plan to go, dress it up or down with the right pieces.

Pair your skirt with a feminine blouse and blazer for an elegant and professional look. Accessorize with a belt that matches in colors. If you want a casual look, a shirt and sneakers will do.

8. Button-Up Shirt

Mature woman sitting on the couch with laptop MSN

A button-up shirt can go with almost anything in your closet. It’s extremely easy to pair. White and blue are the go-to colors and are compatible with most other colors.

Wear this button-up shirt with a blazer, pants, and pumps for a professional look. Get a jeans and sandals for a more casual look.

9. Properly Fitting Bra

Overjoyed mature grandmother standing with outstretched arms

A well-fitted bra offers comfort and a seamless look from the outside. A good shapewear can support the ladies efficiently, making it a wardrobe essential. While no one will see it, you want to be comfortable and don’t want any to be seen through your clothes.

Make sure that you get bras that are not too tight and not too loose, either. Choose the ones with soft fabric and flexible straps. If you’re okay with a wireless bra, I’d consider to switch to that. I find that they’re a whole lot more comfortable, of course, that’s only my personal experience.

10. Elegant Loungewear

Elegant mature woman sitting on the bed MSN

Loungewear is comfortable like you haven’t experienced before. For women over 50, loungewear can make you feel fabulous and comfy at the same time.

I just got the memo, but apparently, loungewear is okay to wear outside your house as well. I even see people doing groceries in their pajamas, so I feel okay wearing loungewear outside of my home. Pair your loungewear with fluffy slippers to achieve maximum comfort. Of course, choose the color that flatters to your skin tone.

Woman in blazer on the phone holding her laptop MSN

Blazers are versatile pieces that deliver a smart look to any outfit you wear. They elevate your look from casual to smart casual, adding a touch of elegance and formality to your look.

Wear it for work together with a blouse and skirt. Dress down by pairing your blazer with a simple shirt and jeans. Get a blazer in neutral colors like black and brown so you can pair it with anything.

12. Contemporary Eyewear

Happy senior woman sitting and pouring tea MSN

A complete wardrobe is not just about clothes, bags, and shoes but also accessories. Don’t settle for the usual eyewear style and shape if you wear prescription glasses. Try other available frame designs and colors.

Rimless glasses are an oldie-but-goodie, but you can explore more modern frames, too. Choose the frame shape based on what’s flattering to your face shape. Round and oval faces need frames with angles, while square-shaped faces need round frames to soften the angles.

13. Flattering Pants

Senior couple climbing the stairs MSN

Different pants can totally flatter your shape and enhance your look—you just need to find the right fit. For women over 50, get a comfortable pair, and make sure to have them in neutral colors that are easy to pair with other clothes.

Try stylish mid-waisted pants that are comfortable. Pair it with a simple white T-shirt for a clean look. Pair it with booties for an elegant effect, or go for sneakers if you want to go casual.

14. Pencil Skirt

Senior woman in white office suit MSN

A pencil skirt emphasizes your figure, whatever your body size and shape may be. Just make sure the length of your skirt is appropriate for the office if you plan to wear it to work.

Buy a stretchable, knee-length pencil skirt that fits nicely. It’s best paired with flats or pumps. Add a little pop of color either in your shirt or your blazer, to lift your outfit up.

Stylish Woman in park with Scarf in Ponytail hairstyle

Scarves offer more than just warmth, they also add layers to your look. They can be used as an accessory on a warm day or an essential part of the outfit on a cold day.

Wear colorful scarves on your head, neck, and even hair to elevate your look. With many styles to choose from, you won’t get bored mixing and matching your outfit to your favorite scarves.

16. Cardigan

mature women with classic bob hairstyle

Cardigans add layers to any outfit you want to wear. They also elevate your style and add warmth to a cold day. They also have a slimming effect you’d want on a day when you feel a bit bloated.

To get the best cardigan, look for the ones with high-quality fabrics. You can choose from cotton, wool, and cashmere. Synthetic blends may also be considered if you’re allergic to some of these fabrics.

17. Leggings

Senior woman leaning on the mat doing pilates MSN

Many women prefer to wear leggings because they’re so comfortable. Wear them when you’re on an errand that requires a lot of walking and running or if you plan an exercise.

Yoga pants make a great substitute if you’re not a fan of leggings. Sweaters and boots look good with tight leggings.

18. Denim Jacket

Mature woman in denim jacket posing MSN

Denim jackets are uncommon in most closets of women over 50 but should be part of your wardrobe essentials. They are versatile to wear, and you can pair them with almost anything.

Denim jackets come in different colors. Choose the usual color or explore other colors that look good on denim and match your skin tone.

19. White Jeans

Mature woman sitting on the couch MSN

Women over 50 need white jeans on stand-by to wear something different than the usual blue jeans. Get white pants in different designs, including straight-leg, flare, and boot-cut. Choose the one you’re comfortable wearing.

If you like white clothes, you can get different pairs and styles of pants in white too. Pair them with your tunic tops and brown booties for a clean casual look. Adding a navy jacket also works for a colder day.

20. Statement Jewelry

beautiful mature woman with cardigan and necklace

Statement jewelry are eye-catching accessories that can round up your entire look. For women over 50, aim for statement pieces to be more elegant than bold to not look gaudy.

Pair statement jewelry with simpler and plainer outfits. Elevate your casual sweater and jeans duo with a statement necklace. If you’re not used to wearing necklaces, try wearing hoop earrings instead.

21. Black Leather Jacket

Mature woman in leather jacket

Who says women over 50 can’t look good? Nothing beats a good old black leather jacket to bring a bold vibe to your look.

The classic jacket offers a stylish layer to any outfit you wear. The piece adds an edgy look to a simple shirt and jeans pairing and even to dresses. You may also want to consider vegan or faux leather if you don’t like real leather.
