Day 1 : Sunday: Quito – Coca – Napo River

We have itineraries of 3,4,5,7 and 8 days, depending on your preferences. This is an example itinerary of 8 days

Departure from Quito.  A short 30-minute flight takes us to the frontier town of Coca (Francisco de Orellana) – and transfer to the dock, where we will embark on a motorized canoe and navigate down river about 1 hour, to board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruise. Throughout the journey we have a chance to admire the rainforest landscape and banks of the great Napo River.

Immediately after boarding the M/V Anakonda, we continue navigating downstream. Passengers will have their first opportunities to enjoy the exciting features of our cruise ship: the spacious social areas, comfortable suites, and an observation deck that offers spectacular views. An evening walk is organized after sunset; it gives us the opportunity to discover the forest’s nocturnal activity and listen to the incessant sounds of nature.

Day 2 : Visiting the Pañacocha Biological Corridor

We will continue our navigation downstream to the Pañayacu River delta; take a canoe trip up the river to experience the sights of this fascinating reserve. We will seek out Pink River Dolphins, Common Squirrel Monkeys and much more. Pañacocha (Piranha Lake, in Quechua) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters. The rivers and lakes here are the perfect habitat for the infamous Piranha, as well as the Water Monkey Fish (Arawana) and White Caiman. After a refreshing swim (for the courageous!), we will enjoy a delicious Amazon-style BBQ meal and refreshing beverages at a nearby camping site. In the afternoon, we will head out on exploration trails, and return onboard for dinner.

Day 3 : Clay licks – Sani Warmi & Yasuní National Park

Breakfast on board. We set out to visit one of the most amazing spectacles this side of western Amazonia known as parrot licks, these unique pools of mud become rich in minerals and attract hundreds of parrots, parakeets and amazons every day. If weather permits, we will have a chance to marvel at this astonishing natural phenomenon.

Later we will visit the Sani Warmi Kichwa Interpretation Center, where a group of Kichwa women will speak of their customs, cuisine and everyday life. They have created the center in order to showcase their culture, and it is a unique opportunity to learn about Amazonian lifestyles along the Napo River. You will also have the opportunity to buy crafts, local products and souvenirs.

After lunch, we will make a stop at the Yakukawsay Kichwa Interpretation Centre, and end with an interesting evening walk through the forest (depending on accessibility, river water levels and weather conditions).

Day 4 : Indillama & Napo Rivers – Yasuní National Park

In this day you have the option to kayak trough one of the afluents of the Napo River that goes into the Yasuni National Park, the Indillama River. Great excursions for wildlife observation, kayaks are a great silent vehicle to flow down river.

Or you can choose to go tin a canoe ride in search of more wildlife through the Napo River. It’s up to you!

Day 5 : Border with Peru (the heart of Yasuní)

After a delicious breakfast, we disembark on land for our first daylight close-and-personal tropical rainforest experience, where we will learn about the relationship between plants and animals while closely watching out for samples of Amazonia’s fascinating biodiversity at every turn.

After lunch, the M/V Anakonda navigates to one of the most pristine and little explored sections of Ecuadorian Amazonia, home to the legendary pink river dolphin, black caiman and anaconda. We may also find river turtles and various species of monkeys, as well as the primitive Hoatzin, a one-of-a-kind bird locally known as “the Stinky Turkey”. The only way to actually visit this flooded ecosystem is by canoe, a ride that will reveal the beauty of a lush jungle world.

For our more adventurous passengers, please inquire about our glamping program

Day 6 : Meeting the community – activities on board – island exploration

Breakfast on board. We visit a school located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will have the opportunity to interact with children of the area and learn about the educational system of a remote jungle community in Ecuador.

We return on board the M/V Anakonda for lunch and a moment to relax while we navigate upstream.  We will offer a lecture and documentary screening, and if time permits, learn about (and make) typical handicrafts of the area. In the afternoon, we explore one of the largest river islands of the Napo River.

Day 7 : Parrot’s clay lick – Limoncocha biological reserve

Breakfast on board. We set out to visit one of the most amazing spectacles this side of western Amazonia known as parrot licks, these unique pools of mud become rich in minerals and attract hundreds of parrots, parakeets and amazons every day. If weather permits, we will have a chance to marvel at this astonishing natural phenomenon. We will also visit a small community arts and crafts shop, an excellent place to find souvenirs to take back.

In the afternoon, we visit Limoncocha Biological Reserve, a fascinating protected area where more than 478 bird species and several monkey species have been recorded. This activity will extend into the evening, when we will have a chance to spot black caiman with the help of our flashlights. Return to the M/V Anakonda for dinner.

In the morning, disembark the M/V Anakonda and transfer by motorized canoe to Coca (1-hour ride); flight to Quito.

Most Popular Ecuador Trips & Tours

Due to fairly stable seasonal weather conditions in Ecuador, travelers can enjoy year-round travel to the country. Some areas have better weather at certain times of the year, but it is always a good time to travel to Ecuador. Ecuador has a surprising variety of climates. The weather can be very localized and tends to change quickly because of the country’s unique geography. Located on the Equator, Ecuador is divided into four main regions: the Andes, the Amazon, the Coast, and the Galapagos Islands. Within these four regions of this small country, roughly the size of Colorado, elements of all four seasons can occur in a single day. The Andes (Highlands) Visitors can experience the Andean Highlands year-round, though June to September and late November to mid-January tend to be the drier months. February to May and October to mid-November are considered the rainier season. During the rainier months, one will find warm sunny weather in the morning followed by almost daily showers in the afternoon. Temperatures show little variance throughout the year with averages in the 60s during the day and 50s at night, though sunny days may get into the 70s and cooler nights may drop into the 40s. Despite these averages, it is common to have rainy streaks in the dry season and nice sunny weather in the wet season. It is best to come prepared for both rain and sun, as visitors will likely run into both during any month of the year. Warm days and cool nights are normal so packing layers is essential. The Amazon The Amazon basin is what you would expect of a tropical rainforest: wet, hot and humid. January marks the beginning of the less rainy period, which extends through March. Calling this the dry season would be a misnomer as it still rains quite frequently. March through July tends to be rainier than the first two months of the year, with July tending to be the rainiest. August through December is known as the fluctuation season. During this time, it is nearly impossible to predict weather patterns. One minute could be hot and sunny with clear blue skies and then the next minute a heavy downpour could begin. Temperatures year-round range in the 80s (27-33°C) and rain, sometimes even cool rainstorms, can be expected most days in the afternoon, as the Amazon basin is truly a rainforest. Any time of year is great to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon despite the level of rain. Contrary to what one may think, the months with higher averages of rainfall are great times to visit. Higher levels of rain increase fruit production, which results in more activity from monkeys and other fruit eating species. The Amazon is an unpredictable environment from both a weather and wildlife standpoint. The best approach for visitors to have an excellent Amazonian experience is to come prepared for the unexpected and to have an open mind! The Coast On coast, the dry season runs from about June to December with a temperature drop to the high 70s. The garua, a damp mist, has a tendency to cast itself over the coastline and the sun. The sun can disappear for three months at a time. Then in January to June, temperatures go up and despite the occasional heavy rain, the days will be bright and sunny. The Galapagos The great weather of the Galapagos Islands makes them a fantastic destination for travel year-round. Every month of the year is a good time to enjoy a tour of the region. The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate that is almost completely determined by sea currents. Although most believe the Galapagos to be a very hot destination, the cool water currents in the area keep the climate fairly temperate year-round. The mild variations in weather from month to month result in an overall climate of warm days, cool nights and low humidity. Anytime is a great time to travel to the Galapagos; while visiting one can expect to see plenty of sunshine, blue skies and a possible chance of light rain.

I have traveled many places in the world but the trip put together by Southern Explorations may well be the best. The amazing biology we saw on the Galapagos and in the Amazon, wonderful guides both on the Eclipse and at Sacha lodge, excellent food, and great coordination of the different parts of the trip made for an incredible journey.   -Marilyn Parsons, USA (Galapagos Island Cruise & Amazon)

We had an outstanding time on our Galapagos Adventure + stay at the Sacha Lodge. Everything ran seamlessly and our guides were fun and knowledgeable. It was the perfect mix of activity, education, and relaxation! We also highly recommend the Sacha Lodge. - Eric & Leah Monson, USA (Galapagos Island Land & Amazon)

The Top 2 Amazon Cruises in Ecuador

Anakonda Amazon Cruise

Ecuador is the origin of the great Amazon River. This is a river that moves more water than any other on Earth.

The Amazon winds its way through the world’s largest tropical forest. The river splits apart and regroups constantly, until finally gushing into the Atlantic Ocean at the far side of South America.

Because the river splits off into tributaries and waterways, it’s a great way to get into the forest to see Amazon Rainforest animals and plants.

On Amazon cruises, you will relax in the ambiance only a tropical rainforest can provide.

For adventurous relaxation while enjoying this wonderful forest, it especially doesn’t get better than a cruise. And we have selected two of the best small-group Amazon vessels for this section of forest.

Dolphin from the Manatee Explorer, Ecuador

From the main cruise vessel, you will explore on rainforest walks, small boats and kayaks led by some of the best guides in the Amazon.

You will be spotting incredible wildlife in one of the world’s most wildlife-rich protected areas. Then, after your adventures, you can retire to your comfortable quarters or social areas looking over photos from the day and simply enjoying Amazonia.

Yasuni National Park

The Amazon area you will explore is called the Yasuni National Park, which is often regarded as the most wildlife-rich place on Earth.

Within the Yasuni, there are a number of tributaries that flow into the Amazon River and we will explore some of these for an abundance of forest life. We will be scouting for some of the 11 different monkeys, 600 bird species, 6 different Amazon cats, and fascinating frogs and reptiles.

Dart Frog from the Manatee Explorer, Ecuador

Manatee Amazon Explorer

A great choice for tours of the rainforest is the Manatee Amazon Explorer .

Click the video below for a short introduction.

Manatee Cruise

Aboard the Manatee Amazon Cruise , you will explore the Yasuni National Park to enjoy colorful parrots at the clay licks and many different animals. Head out to find fascinating and curious monkeys, river dolphins and enjoy a tall canopy tower to spot toucans and other colorful birds.

Choose from 3 to 7 night cruise itineraries aboard the Manatee where you can enjoy various activities.

Manatee Explorer Canoeing, Ecuador

As well as rainforest walks, motorized canoe tours, kayaking, and night expeditions, we will explore a fantastic canopy tower. The tower reaches 50-meters into the trees and provides great views over the canopy. We will be trying to spot colorful toucans and parrots, nesting birds and different monkeys.

The parrot clay lick is one of the favorites.

We will enjoy many colorful parrots and parakeets visiting these specific areas of clay, which the birds visit to top up their salts and detoxify unripe fruits and seeds. This provides opportunities to watch the birds and to take fantastic photographs.

Manatee Explorer Suite, Ecuador

Aboard the cruise vessel itself, you can find 14 comfortable and modern double-twin and single-twin cabins. These offer air conditioning, a comfortable bed and a private bathroom complete with a massage shower. Your suites feature hot and cold water, 24-hour electricity and 110-voltage outlets and switches. The vessel provides a comfortable base to relax after your daily activities exploring the Amazon.

To check availability for your travel dates, you can send the cruise a request using the button below.

Anakonda Amazon Cruise

Anakonda Cruise

Offering a slightly larger cruise on the Amazon River, the Anakonda Amazon Cruise is the only other luxury cruise in Ecuador.

This is the sister vessel to the Manatee.

The cruise has been meticulously designed to provide a high quality Amazon River experience. Enjoy large panoramic windows fitted throughout the vessel, attractive and spacious cabins with private balconies, a Jacuzzi and very comfortable beds.

You can also relax in the social areas like the al fresco lounge, solarium and outdoor Jacuzzi, which are great places to retire after your explorations into the Amazon Rainforest.

Anakonda Cruise Lounge, Ecuador

The Anakonda Amazon Cruise dining experience involves the cruise’s exquisite dining room with fantastic views of the rainforest. You will enjoy delicious Ecuadorian cuisine as well as international favorites.

Rainforest activities aboard the Anakonda Amazon Cruise mirror the Manatee. We will scout this incredible forest looking for abundant wildlife, such as monkeys, colorful toucans, relaxed-looking reptiles and playful river dolphins.

We will visit the parrot and parakeet clay lick to see colorful displays, the 50-metre canopy tower to see far over the canopy, and explore the waterways on motorized canoes and kayaks. When you return, you can relax in your suite, the social areas aboard the Anakonda Amazon Cruise or choose from the different treatments in the onboard spa.

Anakonda Cruise Lounge, Ecuador

An extra activity offered on both the Manatee Explorer and Anakonda Amazon Cruise is Glamping.

Never heard of it? Think of it like camping for people who don’t like camping. That is to say camping with more glamour.

For a night of your choosing, the cruises will set up a very comfortable campsite for you in a romantic and interesting section of forest. The cruise will also bring you all your meals so you don’t miss out on service. As this is an additional activity, there is an additional charge but if you want a little more adventure, glamping is a great experience.

To add the glamour element, the cruises use state-of-the-art deluxe tents on a wooden raised base, provide gourmet meals, champagne and hot showers.

View from the Canopy Tower, Ecuador

Both of these cruises are operated with a responsible approach to tourism and an understanding that the vessels exist in one of Earth’s most precious and fragile environments. The cruises involve locals in their operations and return the benefits of tourism to local communities.

Both vessels were designed to cause the least impact possible on the surrounding environment. Particular attention was paid to areas such as waste management. The cruises are environmentally responsible and certified by both Rainforest Alliance and Smart Voyager.

– Day 1 / SUNDAY: QUITO – COCA – NAPO RIVER

Our adventure begins in the city of Quito, Capital of Ecuador. After taking a short 30- minute flight from Quito to the Amazon city of Coca, located in the Province of San Francisco de Orellana, we will transfer to the dock and board our motorized canoe to begin our journey down the river for approximately an hour and a half, taking in the first sights and sounds of the Amazon. Soon, we will reach the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises and receive our welcome aboard. Once we have settled into the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises, we will be joined by expert local naturalist guides who will provide us with a brief and informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon, after which guests will have their first opportunity to discover the exciting features of our cruise ship: spacious social areas, comfortable suites, and the observation deck that allows us to admire the changing rainforest landscape as we glide down the Napo River. After dinner, we will plunge straight into the Amazon by going for a nighttime forest walk to observe the forest’s nocturnal activity and experience the thrill of the vivid noises and aromas that come from so much biodiversity.

– Day 2 / MONDAY: PAÑACOCHA BIOLOGICAL CORRIDOR

We continue to travel downstream to the Pañayacu River delta, where we will take a canoe trip to experience the sights of this fascinating water reserve. Pañacocha Lake is an ecosystem flooded by blackwaters. Pañacocha means “Piranha Lake” in the native Quechua language. The surrounding protected Rainforest is home to 9 species of primates, 500 species of birds and more than 100 fish species. This is the perfect habitat for Piranhas, the Water Monkey Fish (Arawana) and the White Caiman. In this little piece of paradise, we will participate in nature walks led by our local naturalist guides, and relax at a nearby campsite where we will enjoy a delicious Amazon-style BBQ and refreshing beverages. After lunch, we will do some kayaking, and the bravest among us will enjoy a nice refreshing swim in the Piranha Lake! We promise it’s not as dangerous as it sounds! Back on board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises, our guests will have the opportunity to attend a lecture given by our concierge and watch an educational documentary about the region.

– Day 3 / TUESDAY: PARROT CLAY LICKS – AMAZONIAN COMMUNITIES & OBSERVATION TOWER

This morning, we will set out on canoes to observe one of the most incredible sights on this side of the Western Amazon – the Parrot Clay Licks. This unique place is rich in minerals and attracts hundreds of colorful parrots, parakeets and amazon birds, every day. Later, we will visit a Quechua Cultural Center, where we will learn about Amazon communities and their ancestral culture, traditions, and cuisine. Members of the local community will teach us about indigenous lifestyles along the Napo River and we will have the opportunity to support the local community by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs. Before sunset, we will visit an observation tower in the rainforest canopy, which offers an astonishing 360-degree view of the Amazon basin and is the perfect photo opportunity! Birdwatchers and bird-lovers alike will especially enjoy this outing.

– Day 4 / WEDNESDAY: RETURN

This is where our adventure ends! Enjoy the last part of our return journey onboard and then disembark the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises to take the motorized canoe back to Coca (one-and-a-half-hour ride). *For our guests with a more adventurous inclination, we are pleased to offer a glamping program, which is an alternative manner to explore this enchanting destination. Contact us for more details! (Optional activity for the 5 & 8 days Itinerary).

  • Itinerary "B" - 5 days / 4 nights

– Day 1 / WEDNESDAY: QUITO – COCA – NAPO RIVER

– day 2 / thursday: the heart of the yasuni national park (home of the legendary pink river dolphin).

Early in the morning, we will visit Yasuni National Park. This is a pristine and relatively undisturbed region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our guests will be pleased to learn that this is the home of the legendary Pink River Dolphin! In this area we can also find anacondas, river turtles and various primate species, as well as the colorful Hoatzin, a unique bird that is known locally as the “Stinky Turkey”. Later in the afternoon, we will go canoeing in a blackwater lake, home to giant otters and the magnificent, albeit elusive manatee. We will also enjoy a pleasant hike in the Riparian/Gallery Forest, where we have the chance to spot a flock of birds and marvel at the intricate organization of a colony of leaf-cutter ants by the “Giant Fig Tree”, a truly majestic tree that is home to an abundance of wildlife, much like the “Giant Kapok Tree”.

– Day 3 / FRIDAY: QUECHUA FAMILY & CANOEING IN A BLACKWATER LAKE

We will start the day off by visiting an authentic Quechua family located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will receive cultural immersion and the opportunity to learn directly from members of the local community. We will then board the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises for lunch and some leisure time as we continue our journey upstream. At this time, our guests are invited to participate in a cooking class with our chef who will share recipes and techniques for preparing exquisite traditional Ecuadorian food that you can replicate at home. Guests are also invited to try their hands at making traditional handicrafts.

– Day 4 / SATURDAY: FOREST ADVENTURE & OBSERVATION CANOPY TOWER

Our guests can relax and enjoy the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises during the morning and disembark to explore the nearby forest for a walk to discover a myriad of different animals and plant species that can only be found in the Amazon basin. In the afternoon, we will visit a canopy tower, built against a giant Kapok tree. The perspective at the top of this observation tower is truly glorious, looming above the lush treetops and providing a view of the sheer vastness of the Amazon Basin. In the evening, we will bravely venture into the river on a canoe to search for black caimans with the help of our flashlights.

– Day 5 / SUNDAY: RETURN

This is where our adventure ends! Enjoy the last part of our return journey onboard and then disembark the M/V Anakonda Amazon Cruises to take the motorized canoe back to Coca (a one-and-a-half-hour ride). *For our passengers with a more adventurous inclination, we are pleased to offer a glamping program, which is an alternative manner to explore this enchanting destination. Contact us for more details! (Optional activity for the 4&7-nights Itinerary).

  • Itinerary "C" - 8 days / 7 nights

– Day 3 / TUESDAY: PARROT CLAY LICKS– AMAZONIAN COMMUNITIES & OBSERVATION TOWER

– day 4 / wednesday: indillllama & napo river – the norther side of yasuní national park.

We will begin the day kayaking along the Indillama River, one of the Napo River’s tributaries, which leads us into Yasuni National Park. Kayaks are smooth and silent, providing the very best opportunity to observe wildlife. Canoes can also be used to travel in search of more wildlife. The choice is yours! In these waters, you will find yourself surrounded by lush greenery. After an adventure-filled day, you may choose to take advantage of our observation deck where you can relax and experience a magical view under the stars. Our more energetic guests may choose to unwind with a night walk through the jungle to observe nocturnal creatures.

– Day 5 / THURSDAY: THE HEART OF THE YASUNI NATIONAL PARK (HOME OF THE LEGENDARY PINK RIVER DOLPHIN)

– day 6 / friday: quechua family & canoeing in a blackwater lake, – day 7 / saturday: forest adventure & observation canopy tower, – day 8 / sunday: return.

Ecuador Amazon Tours

Ecuador Amazon tours offer a unique chance to unlock some of the untouched secrets of this raw and pristine forest that occupies a third of the country to the east of the Andes. Begin your adventure with a short 30 minute flight from Quito across the Andes to the jungle city of Coca, known as the gateway to the Ecuadorian Amazon ever since Francisco de Orellana first navigated the river on his 1541 expedition.

From here take a luxurious Ecuador Amazon river cruise along the River Napo, and watch colorful toucans, macaws and tanagers on excursions to hidden clay licks that fringe the water, or ride in motorized and dugout canoes to a remote Ecuadorian rainforest lodge like the La Selva Lodge overlooking Garzacocha Lagoon or the Napo Wildlife Center on the banks of Añangu Lake, deep in the Yasuní National Park and the territory of the indigenous Kichwa people. Wildlife tours in Ecuador’s Amazonian Oriente are humming with life and boast a sweeping biodiversity.

Temperature & Rainfall

Best Time to Cruise the Amazon River

The high-water season runs roughly from November to May with 60-180 inches of rain. This rainy season allows more extensive exploration in small craft and jungle access via water. Low-water season is June through October with 30-100 inches of rain. This dry season, or shall we say less rainy season, may allow for more trail walks. Though it can rain slightly more in the high-water season, it usually rains some every day in the low-water season too. The best time to cruise the Amazon River is at the end of the rainy season in May and June.

What Travelers Say About Their Amazon Cruise

The seamless transfer, accommodation, and guides minimized our efforts to enjoy a fabulous trip planned with AdventureSmith. I cannot say enough positive things about the way you took my thoughts and desires (including certain hotels) to create this fabulous package. The comfortably elegant suites joined together with the impeccable staff to provide a fabulous four days.

This is only the second time that I have not planned and organized a vacation and yet this is the ONLY time that every single aspect of our trip was outstanding. Doing a small boat cruise and with only 8 passengers; we all became like family and are all still in contact with one another.

Delfin II had great guides. They could spot things I never would have seen. I wish we had stayed on it for a full week instead of the short four days. All other hotels were above expectations.

The crew was absolutely fantastic. I most enjoyed the skiff excursions with Victor and Neal—they were so knowledgeable.

The naturalists were excellent, full of information and willing to answer any questions--dumb or otherwise--we asked. The entire trip was a wonderful experience.

This experience exceeded our already high expectations. The seamless transfer, accommodation, and guides minimized our efforts to enjoy a fabulous trip planned with AdventureSmith. The trip with Delfin I was truly amazing. The comfortably elegant suites joined together with the impeccable staff to provide a fabulous four days.

Accommodations Review

All choices from the Belmond Miraflores, to our stay in Cusco, Inkaterra in Aguas Caliente, and most definitely the Delfin I were superior accommodations, each with a very unique feel.

Crew & Guides Review

The leaders and guides on the Delfin I exuded intelligence, constantly piqued our interest, and worked tirelessly to make our trip perfect. Javier was the lead guide, but we enjoyed socializing a bit with the bar tender Gaston, the Captain Javier, Security guards, Cesar and Vincente, the boat driver Rodsando, and the medic Dante.

All the transfers worked like a ballet. The drivers/guides appeared as promised with absolutely no concerns on our part. All involved were informative and professional. This certainly made our trip much more pleasant as this removed a certain tension from the trip.

Meals Review

The Inkaterra surprised our group with its attention to detail. All meals were included and all were a gourmet delight. As for the Delfin I, again with all meals included, we experienced very local foods artistically and deliciously prepared with keeping our desires in mind at all times. After one meal, the staff knew exactly our thoughts and choices for drinks, appetizers, and dishes. Excellent.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I cannot say enough positive things about the way you took my thoughts and desires (including certain hotels) to create this fabulous package. Through many interactions and last minute changes on my part, our needs were met without question. Thank you for creating this amazing trip which will give us a lifetime of memories in a quite unique way.

We have traveled Europe extensively and now need more active experiences. Our specialist suggested many venues to satisfy our very particular taste and desires.

This is only the second time that I have not planned and organized a vacation and yet this is the ONLY time that every single aspect of our trip was outstanding.  Every transfer and stay was flawless except one mix-up on one end and all it took was one phone call and that was solved - so really to us that didn't count.  It was one of our best vacations ever, not only because of the destination but also because we didn't have to worry about connections and specifics. The Amazon on the Delfin I was the best ever.  Doing a small boat cruise and with only 8 passengers; we all became like family and are all still in contact with one another.

The food on the Delfin I was 5 star all the way.  They even prepared our piranha that we caught and it was delicious!

Every transfer, driver and guide was professional, reliable and couldn't have been better.  Each became a friend and were flexible enough to accommodate our desires during the day.  Couldn't say enough about all of these.

Our AdventureSmith Specialist was available always by email, phone to answer questions and the suggested packing lists were extremely helpful and really we had 3 different climates to pack for; coastal/urban in Lima, tropical jungle in Iquitos and cooler highlands in Cusco and we found that we had packed well thanks to the advice of AdventureSmith.

The entire trip was awesome. Delfin II was great. Wish we had stayed on it for a full week instead of the short four days. All other hotels were above expectations.

I think on meals, a little more explanation would be helpful. Included hotel meals were a nice surprise as I didn't realize as many were included as they were.

Delfin II had great guides. They could spot things I never would have seen.

Taylor was great. Setting up this trip was simple and easy and she was helpful with any and all my questions. Excellent management of all travel plans. On top of it when our flight was cancelled from Iquitos to Lima. Only hiccups were in the Lima airport. That place is crazy and we barely found our guide the first time and completely missed them the second.

  • Taylor Cranney

I loved seeing all the birds and wildlife. The crew was absolutely fantastic. I most enjoyed the skiff excursions with Victor and Neal—they were so knowledgeable. The jungle walks were good too.

Everything was clean, neat and welcoming.

Victor is a jewel, very kind and helpful. I primarily stayed with Victor's group as he was a bit more into the birds and I loved seeing so many and he would identify them and was so excited and enthusiastic with each new siting. The guides most enjoyable and got us through the airport painlessly. About the only thing I would change would be for the naturalists to give us the list of possible sightings of birds and animals at the first of the trip and not on the last day.

Food was very good. I liked the fruit with each meal and a choice of meats. I enjoyed all the variety we had.

Traveler Advice

Learn a bit of basic Spanish if possible. Bring one or two changes of nice clothes for dinner. A few things were recommended that were unnecessary, such as laundry soap, plug for the tub, and clothes line. It was hard to take everything recommended and still pack light. However, I was amazed at the very large bags some guests took.

  • Amatista Amazon Cruise

We went to the Upper Amazon with a lay-over in Quito.  Everything went perfectly (except for a cancelled flight on the way home) and the entire trip was a wonderful experience.

Absolutely first class.

The were all exceptional.  The naturalists were excellent, full of information and willing to answer any questions--dumb or otherwise--we asked.  I learned a lot and I think the others did, too.

The crew/staff on both ships were excellent, as well.  The attention to detail on both ships was remarkable and everyone, from the top managers on down, went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of.

Could not have been better. The chef was exceptional at providing food that reflected the local cultures, yet catering to American (or Australian in some cases) tastes.  Every meal was fun and something of an adventure.

In addition to providing information, they were available for any questions we had.  AdventureSmith was great and answered any questions I had. They made all of our transfer arrangements and they were seamless!  Really well done.  We worked through Exito Travel for our flights to and from South America, and they were excellent, especially in the face of the problems with the reservation systems caused by the merger between American and US Airways.

Ready to discover the awe-inspiring natural beauty and culture of South America on an Amazon River Trip ? Our adventurous expedition-style trips to the heart of the Amazon are one of the most challenged.

AMAZON RIVER EXPEDITION 12 DAYS 11 NIGHTS

Please note that this itinerary gives the general idea of the route offered during this tour. However, due to local river conditions the actual day-to-day itinerary can change. Each day you will be given the opportunity to do jungle walks (with options to do early morning bird walks and night walks at your request). In addition you will have the chance to fish and swim in the rivers between other activities.

DAY 1 Quito-Lago Agrio (bus 8 hours- airplane 30 minutes flight). Our adventure will begin at the meeting point in Lago Agrio where we will travel by private bus for 2 hours , when you arrive at the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve where we have our lunch, after we take our motor canoe for 2 hours approximately on the Cuyabeno River to get to our Lodge.

DAY 2 After breakfast we have a walk around the Laguna Grande. Around this area you can hope to see monkeys, macaws, possibly river dolphins depending on the level of the river, and other animals . Lunch, and in the afternoon we go to swim in the Laguna Grande where you can see the beautiful sunset. Optional night walk.

DAY 3 After breakfast we will continue our journey by canoe on the Cuyabeno River to the Siona Indigenous Community where we will prepare a traditional yucca bread dish with a local family. Our ride down the river will then lead us to the community where a traditional Shaman lives. We will set up camp in this region and participate in a ceremony with the Shaman to learn about his work and beliefs

DAY 5 On the 5th day we will be traveling even further into the Cuyabeno Reserve, arriving close to the Peruvian-Ecuadorian border. The canoe trip down the Aguarico River will be longer than on our previous journeys and provides many spectacular views of the river’s wide beaches, animals, and remote vegetation. In the late afternoon we will set up our new base camp on the beaches of the Aguarico River.

DAY 6 Today we will visit one of the most remote regions of the Cuyabeno National Reserve and of Ecuador ‘s Amazon Basin . This region, called Lagarto Cocha, is an extremely remote strip of preserved pristine rainforest where the pink river dolphins are known to live. In addition, it is known to be the home of caymans that can be seen at night. The name Lagarto Cocha is Quecha for ‘Caiman Lake.’.

DAY 7 We will continue with our activities of jungle walks, fishing, bird observation, and canoeing depending on what weather and river conditions permit. This day will be spent in the Lagarto Cocha region.

DAY 8 Departing early in the morning, we will leave the Lagarto Cocha region and continue our journey to the customs check-point on the border between Ecuador and Peru . Route: Rocafuerte-Pantoja-Santa Martha de Nanay .

DAY 9 Our next destination will be to our base camp on the Curaray River where we will also have the opportunity to fish and do an afternoon or evening walk.

DAY 10 Today we will continue our activities in the region of Santa Clotilde.

DAY 11 We will spend our last full day in the Peruvian Amazon in the region of Laguna Achual Cocha.

DAY 12 On the last day we will arrive at the entrance of the Great Amazon River and enter the city of Iquitos in the morning. The tour officially ends at that point, but you can continue on to Lima by plane if desired (airfare not included in the price).

NOTE : The following itineraries are sample itineraries Manatee River Cruise. Excursions and times on this itineraries are subject to change and largely depend on weather, season, group limitations, group interests, and guide decisions based on passenger safety and organized operations.

4 Days / 3 Nights - Friday to Monday

Day 1: Friday: Quito – Coca – Napo River – Yasuní National Park

Departure from Quito.  A short 30-minute flight takes us to the frontier town of Coca (Francisco de Orellana) – and transfer to the dock, where we will embark on a motorized canoe and navigate down river about 1 ½ hour, to board the M/V MANATEE AMAZON EXPLORER. Throughout the journey we have a chance to admire the rainforest landscape and banks of the great Napo River.

Immediately after boarding the M/V Manatee, we continue navigating downstream.

Day 2: Saturday: visiting the Pañacocha Biological Corridor

Day 3: Sunday: Clay licks – Sani Warmi & Yasuni National Park

Day 4: Monday: Return

5 Days / 4 Nights - Monday to Friday

Day 1: Monday: Quito – Coca – Napo River – Yasuní National Park

Day 2: Tuesday: Border with Peru (the heart of Yasuni)

After a delicious breakfast, we disembark on land for our first daylight close-and-personal tropical rainforest experience, where we will learn about the relationship between plants and animals while closely watching out for samples of Amazonia’s fascinating biodiversity at every turn. After lunch, the M/V Manatee navigates to one of the most pristine and little explored sections of Ecuadorian Amazonia, home to the legendary pink river dolphin, black caiman and anaconda.

For our more adventurous passengers, please inquire about our glamping program.

Day 3: Wednesday: Meeting the Community – activities on board

Breakfast on board. We visit a school located on the banks of the Napo River, where we will have the opportunity to interact with children of the area and learn about the educational system of a remote jungle community in Ecuador.

We return on board the M/V Manatee for lunch and a moment to relax while we navigate upstream.  We will offer a lecture and documentary screening, and if time permits, learn about (and make) typical handicrafts of the area. In the afternoon, we explore one of the largest river islands of the Napo River.

Day 4: Thursday: observation tower – Limoncocha reserve

In the morning after breakfast, visit an observation tower 100-feet high, built against a giant kapok tree. From the top of the tower, we will be blessed with this unique perspective of the forest, looming over the treetops and the greatness of the Amazon Basin.

In the afternoon, we visit Limoncocha Biological Reserve, a fascinating protected area where more than 478 bird species and several monkey species have been recorded. This activity will extend into the evening, when we will have a chance to spot black caiman with the help of our flashlights. Return to the M/V Manatee for dinner.

Day 5: Friday: Return

In the morning, disembark the M/V Manatee and transfer by motorized canoe to Coca (1 ½ hour ride); flight to Quito.

8 Days / 7 Nights - Fri to Fri OR Mon - Mon

Day 1: Friday: Quito – Coca – Napo River – Yasuní National Park

We will seek out Pink River Dolphins, Common Squirrel Monkeys and much more. Pañacocha (Piranha Lake, in Quechua) is an ecosystem flooded by white waters.

Day 3: Sunday: Clay licks – Sani Warmi & Yasuni National Park

Day 4: Monday: Indillama & Napo rivers – Yasuní national park

In this day you have the option to kayak trough one of the afluents of the Napo River that goes into the Yasuni National Park, the Indillama River. Great excursions for wildlife observation, kayaks are a great silent vehicle to flow down river.

Or you can choose to go tin a canoe ride in search of more wildlife through the Napo River. It’s up to you!
