"We had an amazing time visiting Egypt and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Your Egypt Tours. Mona and her team were very accommodating, helping us create our own bespoke itinerary for the highlights of Egypt. All communication was extremely prompt and organised from the outset, and Peter our Egyptologist guide was excellent - he is clearly passionate about Egyptian history and we felt extremely reassured that we were in good safe hands throughout the entire trip. The history and architecture in Egypt is truly remarkable, from the incredible Abu Simbel temple to a sunrise hot air balloon over Luxor, the team helped us create an absolutely memorable trip and we couldn't be more grateful! Thank you Your Egypt Tours. Really must emphasise how excellent our Egyptologist Peter was. Thanks again"

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

Photography Walks for Seniors: Enhancing Wellness One Click at a Time

Photography Walks For Seniors Featured Image

Photography walks allow seniors to merge their outdoor interests with the joy of capturing moments. They offer socialization, exercise, and a unique view of the world.

Key Takeaways Photography walks blend exercise, socializing, and artistic expression. They inspire a fresh perspective on everyday surroundings. The experience extends beyond the walk-through photo organization and sharing.

Each walk, whether in bustling cities or peaceful nature trails, provides new discoveries and creative opportunities. Detailing a flower’s petal or urban architecture can be the day’s focus.

The adventure continues post-walk with sharing, refining, organizing photos, and perhaps contributing to exhibitions.

Participating in photography events can further enhance the experience with friendship and shared insights.

Benefits Of Photography Walks

Benefits of Photography Walks

Photography walks are a delightful way to mix a love for photography with the enjoyment of leisurely strolls . You get to explore, capture moments, and connect socially and creatively.

Social Aspects of Photography Walks

Let’s say you’re out with a camera, the sun’s just right, and you’re in great company; that’s a photography walk for you.

It provides an excellent opportunity to meet fellow photography enthusiasts and share tips and shots.

Chatting with others about camera settings or the perfect frame for a photo can be as educational as it is enjoyable.

Similarly, networking and building collaborations happen naturally during these walks as you bond over shared interests.

Physical and Mental Health Benefits

Your body and mind thank you each time you participate in a photo walk.

Physically, you’re taking steps, quite literally, towards better health – with the added benefit of doing so while you’re immersed in a creative pursuit.

Mentally, it’s a breath of fresh air; focusing on different subjects and scenes can improve cognitive functions like memory and problem-solving.

You’ll find that photography walks are more than just exercise; they’re a gateway to improving your mental and physical health through creativity in motion.

Types Of Photography Walks

Types of Photography Walks

When you want to enjoy photography, joining a photography walk is a fun choice. You can explore various sceneries at your own pace and capture moments that catch your eye.

Let’s look at some delightful options you might consider.

  • Nature Walks : Imagine walking through a lush park or a quiet forest. You’ll find countless opportunities to take pictures of wildlife, plants, and landscapes. You could even capture the changing seasons, from colorful autumn leaves to fresh spring blossoms.
  • Urban Explorations : The city beats with its own rhythm, and your camera can catch that. Stroll through streets lined with old buildings or modern architecture. Sometimes, the most striking images are found behind the hustle and bustle, like in alleyways with graffiti .
  • Themed Walks : These walks have a specific subject or idea guiding them. For example, a photography walk centered around historic landmarks can be quite captivating if you appreciate history. Or, choose a theme based on color, shapes, or even time of day, like a sunset walk.
  • Social Walks : This is a chance to meet others who share your passion. Groups often gather to share tips and experiences. It’s not just about photos—it’s about the community, too.

Each walk offers unique sights and experiences. Whether you are captivated by nature or fascinated by the city, a photography walk is perfect for you.

Grab your camera, wear comfortable shoes, and enjoy the journey.

Planning Your Photography Walk

Planning Your Photography Walk

Embarking on a photography walk is a delightful way to exercise creativity while enjoying the outdoors.

Here’s how to plan a smooth and enjoyable outing with your camera.

1. Choose the Right Equipment

You’ll want a camera that’s easy to carry; a lightweight point-and-shoot or a digital SLR with a comfortable strap might be just right.

Ensure you have a spare battery and a lens cloth to keep your shots from smudges.

2. Scout the Right Location

Think about places that fascinate you: a park with autumn leaves or perhaps your city’s lively downtown.

The theme of your photo walk can guide your choice, from nature to architecture.

3. Consider The Time of Day and Weather

Early morning light can cast a beautiful glow, and just before sunset, you get that ‘golden hour’ magic.

Be sure to check the weather forecast to avoid any unexpected showers.

4. Plan for Accessibility and Comfort

You’ll be on your feet, so choose paths that are easy to navigate.

Wearing comfortable shoes and dressing in layers can help you easily adjust to changing temperatures.

5. Observe Safe Practices

Inform someone about your photo walk plans and when you’ll return.

Always charge your phone if you need to make a call, and carry identification with you.

Remember to be respectful of people and places you’re photographing.

Post Processing And Organizing Your Photos

Post-Processing and Organizing

After enjoying the fresh air and capturing memories on your camera, it’s time to bring those photos to life.

Here’s how you can easily manage and enhance your images.

Basic Photo Editing

Before you share your favorite moments, a little touch-up makes a big difference.

First, adjust the brightness and contrast to make your photos pop.

Most photo editing software offers simple sliders for these adjustments.

Next, crop any distractions from the edges to focus on the subject.

Remember, the ‘rule of thirds’ is your friend for well-balanced compositions .

Creating Albums and Displays

Organizing your images helps you relive the trip anytime.

Create albums on your computer with clear, descriptive names like “Spring Flowers Photowalk 2024” or “Historic Downtown Walk”.

For physical prints, consider a photo book or frames to decorate your home and share with visitors.

Digital frames are fantastic, too – they can cycle through your photos, keeping your memories fresh daily.

Finding Photography Walk Events

Photography Walk Events

Photography walks offer a fresh way to enjoy your hobby in the company of others who share your passion for capturing life’s moments.

Local Photography Walks

Local photography walks are the easiest way to step into the world of communal photography.

Simply bring your camera and join fellow enthusiasts on a guided tour through your city’s most photogenic spots.

Crucial details like the walk’s date, time, and theme are typically provided beforehand, allowing you to prepare and make the most out of the event.

You will likely find these events through community centers, photography clubs, or websites dedicated to local gatherings.

National and International Photography Tours

If you’re yearning for a grander adventure, photography tours across the country or overseas might be just right for you.

These tours offer a structured itinerary filled with stunning landscapes and rich culture, ensuring that your camera will capture memories worth a thousand words.

They often come with a professional photographer guide who provides insights and tips to help improve your skills.

Prepare your lens and immerse yourself in the delightful world of photography walks, whether close to home or across the globe. Happy snapping!

How To Make The Most Of Your Experience

How to Make The Most of Your Experience

When you’re gearing up for a photography walk, think simplicity.

  • Bring only what you need , like a comfortable camera strap and your favorite lens. It’s about enjoying the moment, not lugging gear.
  • Dress for the journey . You’ll want to wear clothes that let you move and shoes that can handle a day’s adventure. Consider layers—you can adjust to the changing weather easily.
  • Take your time . A photo walk is your chance to observe the small details and take in your surroundings. Don’t rush; let the shots come to you naturally.
  • Experiment with angles . Try something new, maybe a high-angle shot to give a fresh perspective. Challenges can be fun and really boost your creativity.
  • Respect the space around you . It’s important to be mindful of both nature and the people you may encounter. This way, you’ll create memories without leaving a trace.

A quick tip : Use your camera to tell a story.

Capture shots that feel personal and speak to you. It can make your experience truly enriching.

Before you head out, consider looking for guidance like the Senior Style Guide for tailored tips, or learn from others’ experiences, like those shared on Digital Photography School .

Sharing the day with fellow photographers can add to the fun and give you new insights!

With all the benefits and experiences that photography walks offer, there’s little reason not to try it. Not only does it foster creativity and a love for the outdoors, but it also encourages physical activity and social interactions.

6 Slow-Paced Tours for Seniors

As the world continues to evolve at a breakneck pace, there’s an emerging trend that beckons people (not only seniors) to savor the journey rather than race through it – slow-paced tours.

In a society that often glorifies fast-paced adventures and adrenaline-fueled escapades, these tailored tours offer a refreshing alternative.

  • New Orleans at a Slower Pace: A City of History, Culture and Celebration – Road Scholar’s New Orleans at a Slower Pace tour offers seniors an enriching and leisurely exploration of the city’s history, culture, and celebration, promising an unforgettable voyage through the heart and soul of the Big Easy.
  • Paris at a Slower Pace: Art & Culture in the City of Light – This Road Scholar tour offers an immersive and leisurely exploration of Parisian cultural treasures, from masterpieces at the Louvre to strolls through the Latin Quarter and experiences at street-side cafes and open-air markets.
  • Easy Pace Italy – Experience Italy’s top highlights from the Vatican to Venice on Insight Vacations’ 10-day Easy Pace Italy tour, indulging in VIP experiences, Renaissance masterpieces, Tuscan flavors, and the enchanting beauty of Venice’s canals.
  • Easy Pace Budapest, Vienna & Prague – Embark on a 10-day guided tour with Insight Vacations, exploring the fascinating cities of Budapest, Vienna, and Prague at your own pace, discovering historical treasures, indulging in local cuisine, and immersing yourself in the cultural beauty of Central Europe.
  • Living in France: A Three-Week Stay in Provence – Experience the enchanting beauty and artistic legacy of Provence during a three-week immersive stay in Aix-en-Provence with Smithsonian Journeys’ Living in France: A Three-Week Stay in Provence tour.
  • A Stay in Holland: An Art History Journey from Vermeer to Van Gogh – Discover the rich legacy of Dutch art and immerse yourself in the world of iconic masterpieces from Vermeer to Van Gogh on Smithsonian Journeys’ A Stay in Holland: An Art History Journey tour, exploring museums, historic towns, and photogenic landscapes.

From captivating cultural encounters to picturesque landscapes that soothe the soul, these trips are thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs and desires of a variety of travelers.

Let’s delve into the transformative power of unhurried travel, where the emphasis lies not on ticking off landmarks on a checklist but on relishing each intricate moment of life. Slow-paced tours can rekindle the sense of wonder, create lasting memories, and open doors to unforeseen adventures for seniors seeking a new chapter in their travel story.

Why Choose a Slow-Paced Tour

While fast-paced travel might suit some, unhurried trips offer a host of unique advantages that make them an increasingly popular choice among those that enjoy stopping and smelling the roses.

Appreciate the Journey

Slow-paced tours encourage you to savor the experience fully. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, you have the time to absorb the culture, history, and beauty of each destination. This unhurried approach allows you to develop a deeper connection with the places you visit, fostering a profound sense of appreciation for the voyage itself.

Enjoy Relaxed Itineraries

Slow-paced tours are thoughtfully designed with leisurely itineraries that prioritize comfort and enjoyment over rushed sightseeing. Ample free time allows you to explore destinations at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and even indulge in spontaneous moments of discovery.

Embrace Accessibility and Inclusivity

These tours often consider the accessibility needs of seniors, ensuring that the destinations and activities are senior-friendly. They take into account mobility concerns and offer accommodations that cater to varying physical abilities, making the trip more enjoyable for all participants.

Forge Meaningful Connections

With a more relaxed pace, you have the chance to interact with locals and fellow travelers in a more meaningful way. The unhurried environment fosters camaraderie and allows for deeper conversations, creating opportunities for friendships and lasting memories.

Experience Authentic Culture

Slow-paced tours often veer away from the crowded tourist traps, providing a chance to experience the authentic culture of a place. You can indulge in local cuisines, witness traditional customs, and partake in unique activities that might not be possible on fast-paced tours.

Reduce Stress and Fatigue

Traveling at a slower pace can significantly reduce the stress and fatigue commonly associated with rushed trips. This approach is especially beneficial as it allows you to maintain your energy levels and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Immerse in Nature’s Beauty

These tours often include visits to serene natural landscapes, where you can bask in the tranquility of breathtaking scenery. Whether it’s a scenic countryside, a peaceful coastal town, or a majestic mountain range, slow-paced tours provide ample time to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Accommodate Special Interests

Slow-paced tours can be tailored to cater to specific interests, such as art, history, wildlife, or wellness. You can choose tours that align with your passions.

Finding the Right Balance

Margaret Manning, the founder of Sixty & Me and an avid traveler, reflects on the differences between slow-paced and fast-paced traveling.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to join Road Scholar on a trip to Prague. On this adventure, I learned just how fun group travel can be. Every day had a theme, which I loved. At the same time, the formal activities weren’t overwhelming. I had time to walk alone. I discovered secret parks. I wandered through tiny shops and expansive gardens. And, of course, I made plenty of new friends.

Shortly after my Road Scholar trip, I completed a one-month train journey around Northern Europe. This second trip was much more fast-paced. In 10 days, I traveled 6,000 kilometers and visited 12 cities. I traveled by train, car, boat, and bike. I stayed in a new hotel every 2 days. It was an amazing experience… if a little tiring.

My goal on both of these trips was to inspire the women in our community to step out of their comfort zones and consider alternative travel options.

One of the questions that I asked myself over and over again, as I worked my way around Europe, was whether I was pushing too hard. Was I trying to see too much? Would it have been better if I had taken it easy and “stopped to smell the roses” more often?

Obviously, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer to this question. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, like many women over 60, I feel a great deal of pressure to see as much as I can in the time that I have left. On the other hand, if I am honest, sprinting from place to place is harder on my body and mind than it used to be.

Does Road Scholar Offer the Best Blend of Fast and Slow-Paced Travel?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Road Scholar is actually an amazing blend of fast and slow-paced travel. On the one hand, all of their programs offer intellectually stimulating activities. They keep your mind buzzing (sometimes spinning) with new ideas.

On the other hand, they don’t force you to go beyond a comfortable pace. If you want to take part in the optional activities, you can. If you want to use your free time to sit at a local café and watch the people passing by, this is also completely fine.

Perhaps this was the main lesson that I learned on my most recent trips.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to travel. There is no “too fast” or “too slow. There is only the pace that we need at a certain time in our lives.

Sometimes we need intensity. Other times, we need intimacy. The trick is to take the time to evaluate where we are in our lives and to choose our travel adventures consciously.

Gmarie

I just returned from a two week group travel tour of Ireland and Scotland. Although it was wonderful, I found the fast pace and constantly being on the go stressful and tiring. I am a 70 yo female in good health and fit! Plus, I caught Covid for the first time ever and although fairly mild, it still took its toll and I spent the majority of the trip wearing a mask. As a result of my experience, I had decided over the course of the trip that any future trips I take will be slower paced and immersive. This article is spot on!

Sandra Roussy

Hi Gmarie, I’m so sorry Covid put a damper on your trip to Ireland and Scotland. Slow paced tours are definitely an excellent way to discover new places without feeling rushed and pressured. They are great for getting an authentic feel of a destination and especially for getting an immersive experience. Keep us posted on your future travels!

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

This was our family’s first guided trip, and we chose the camping option (ages 52, 50, 13, 12). It exceeded our expectations! Despite a complex itinerary we never once had to think about how to get there, how much time to spend at each place, where to park, what to see, where to stay, where or what to eat - that was all planned for us. There was no marital or family tension and could just truly sit back and enjoy the ride! I truly believe we did more and saw more than we ever would have on our own. And special experiences like moonrises and sunrises were a big bonus. Our guide John was an enthusiastic and capable outdoorsman. He made sure the trip met the needs of the various guests - campers and hotellers alike, with a wide range of ages and physical abilities. There were thoughtful touches like road-trip playlists, moonrise and sunrise viewings, pit stops at roadside stops to support Native American craftsmen, and more. This is a beautiful part of the US - each park more beautiful than the last, but each one unique and wonderful. Highly recommend!

Majestic Alaska (10 Days) Tour

Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

In general things went very well. However, At the Denali location there was a shortage of staff which prevented full service at the Park, Ie. not all dinning venues were normal and our room service such as daily service was missing. We were told, staff shortage due to Canadian employees may have left due to concern of border being closed into Canada. Hotel dysfunction on a limited basis due to that concern. On our last day at the Anchorage Hilton room service was missing also. Not sure why. Most other activities were well supplied/performed. We were pleased.with our Tour Director Tyler, Bus Driver Les and Health coordinator Carol., Some other venues were a bit restricted due to COVID-19 concerns which appear to be out of control of Tourradar. We loved Valdez,, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kanai Fjords National Park, as well as the Athabascan Village and flat boat ride and other amenities such as the Husky Dog Farm. Overall pleased, except as noted above. The weather cooperated 100%.

Nature's Best: Alaska

We loved everything except the boat tour out of Seward. The seas were way too rough to go out. It was the final tour of the year on that boat. It should of been cancelled and refunded in full. We received $50 each back because the tour was shortened from 6 hours to 5 hours. I repeat again. Waste of time. I did not take a picture. People were throwing up (plenty of them). Did not see any whales. We were notified the day before that the seas could be rough. Globus should of taken the initiative and cancelled. Did not have a good time at all.

American Parks Trail (Classic, End Denver, 9 Days)

The Tour Director and driver were first class, keeping us both very amused, and very safe. Some of the downsides were due to the weather, at times, which nothing could be done about, so we got on with it. Some of the main downs were due to my naivety, in thinking some facilities (like cash paying taxis from SLC airport; I persuaded a friendly Uber driver to accept cash!) were what I was used to, and that I wouldn't have to re-enter security when changing planes from LHR to SLC, at PHX, even though I was on a connecting, booked, flight, and my baggage had already been labelled for both airports appropriately, at LHR. Altogether, a very good, and memorable holiday, where I visited some parts of the Parks that I visited before, but saw many more, and different sights in them.

What people love about USA Tours for Seniors

It was one of the best tours that I even had. We visited many beautiful places and the tour has the best camping side at the View. I cannot thanks enough for our guide, Hogan. He is very professional, knowledgeable, patient, responsible and kind. I highly recommend this tour!
Excellent tour of the Mighty 5 in Utah. Our guide Robin was knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the tour. Just enough time was allocated for hiking the trails, viewing the sites in the distance and even visiting the Visitor Centers in each park. Hotel/motel accommodations were good and chosen for access to restaurants. Lunch stops with corresponding places to eat were well planned and the food and service was good. We thoroughly enjoyed our time.

7 First Impressions of Moscow, Russia (From a Street Photography Perspective)

moscow-impressions-cover

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the second largest city in Europe by population. It’s an urban, cosmopolitan city of the highest level, with more than enough glitz to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of European and Russian that makes it stand out on its own. And the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen.

moscow-sf-19

So here are my first impressions of Moscow, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

7 First Impressions of Moscow  (From a Street Photography Perspective)

1. big city with so much to discover.

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

moscow-sf-15

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

moscow-sf-12

2. Museum Metro

photography tours for seniors

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

moscow-sf-18

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

moscow-sf-35

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to definitely check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

3. Not as walkable as Saint-Petersburg

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have a lot of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

moscow-sf-45

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

moscow-sf-52

4.  Gorky Park is like a Russian Central Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

moscow-sf-30

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Half the city under construction

European cities in general seem to be filled with more construction than usual lately. But while this won’t be true forever, Moscow was filled with the most I’ve ever seen. Moscow already has the most skyscrapers in Europe, with many being less than a decade old. In only the last few years, the three tallest skyscrapers in Europe have opened here, giving it five of Europe’s ten tallest. The 2018 FIFA Word Cup is bringing much of this on, but the city is pushing to complete a skyline here than will rival any in the world.

moscow-sf-51

The recession has slowed down the construction some, but the government is pushing it on. So all over the city, there were sidewalks covered with wood boards and lined with striped construction walls. At first, it was a little disappointing from a street photography perspective to see so much blocked by construction. After a while, though, it became something to capture. The striped construction materials and signs are colorful and all the workers created some interesting activity. It will be interesting to see what the city looks like when everything is complete, but for now, the construction provides interest itself.

moscow-sf-42

6. Learn the Russian Alphabet

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, it can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

moscow-sf-17

7. Where East Meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with a museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more European package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline and modernities with soviet emblems and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

moscow-sf-26

It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet nostalgia, and a whole lot more.

Russia’s Metropolis

Moscow is famous around the world, but it might not be completely what you expect from Russia’s capital. The city’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it brings something changed over time since its Soviet days. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. Most might say it feels more like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

moscow-sf-48

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

If any of you have been to Moscow before, tell me about your experience and impressions of the city and country in the comments below! And stay tuned for more on Moscow, including some of the best Street Photography shots I captured while there.
