Journey and Toto Kick Off 2022 ‘Freedom’ Tour: Set Lists, Videos

Journey kicked off their 2022 Freedom tour last night in Pittsburgh with a crowd-pleasing 19-song set largely dedicated to their biggest hits.

Neal Schon , Jonathan Cain and Arnel Pineda were joined at the packed PPG Paints Arena by recently recruited keyboardist and singer Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jenson . There was no mention of bassist Randy Jackson or drummer Narada Michael Walden, who were announced as new band members  in 2020.

Castronovo and Jenson, who played with Schon in Hardline in the early '90s, formed a powerful rhythm section, while Castronovo delivered lead vocals on "Mother, Father." Derlatka took the vocal spotlight for two Raised on Radio tracks, "I'll Be Alright Without You" and "Girl Can't Help It."

You can see videos and set lists from the show below.

Journey Reintroduce Themselves to a New Generation at Lollapalooza 2021

By Nina Corcoran

Nina Corcoran

As soon as Lollapalooza’s lineup was announced this year, fans online found themselves ogling, confused, at one band in particular: Journey . Although their legendary career needed no introduction, their inclusion at this particular festival did. Lollapalooza is known to cater to underage suburbanites and 20-somethings from the Midwest. There’s a 19-year age gap between the formation of Journey and that of Modest Mouse, the next oldest band on Lollapalooza’s bill this year. Only three other acts also got their start before this century: Jimmy Eat World, Limp Bizkit, and Foo Fighters.

Two hours before their set began, Journey sold around 500 shirts at the merch table in total — a “rough” turnout according to the store manager. At the same time, Limp Bizkit was performing on the same stage immediately before them. The fact the ‘90s rap-rock band was once an unstoppable force on the charts is a mind-boggling phenomenon of its own, and yet, one could argue, they’re coming back in vogue as a sarcastic favorite among millennials following the Woodstock ’99 documentary .

So when Journey finally took the stage just after 8:00 P.M., it was a pleasant surprise to see a sizable group of fans already gathered around the stage, with hundreds more dotting the lawn on blankets. Journey proved themselves to be festival ready with “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” a single that still packs a punch nearly 40 years later and sent stragglers into a sprint to get a closer view of Neal Schon in action. Arnel Pineda, the band’s lead singer since 2007, earned audible praise from teens in the back with his festival outfit: flashy sunglasses, bleached white jeans, and a white designer sweatshirt emblazoned with a red apple bearing the Gucci logo. Journey may be old, but they presented themselves as fresh favorites onstage.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

It helps that they let Schon take the steering wheel early on. He unfurled a dozen brimful solos across their set. Watching him play, it’s obvious why Guitar Center hopefuls pass the time trying to effortlessly whip out 100-note solos; people like Schon make it look easy.

The same was true for bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Deen Castronovo when they stole the spotlight on the gritty “La Do Da,” despite a dull call-and-response that fell flat before their respective solos. Later, older fans erupted into cheers when Journey launched into “Wheel in the Sky” where Pineda got to show off the depth of his vocal range. After turning it over to the rest of the band for a brief jam, he couldn’t help but rock out, jumping and clapping, lost in the moment of their musicianship.

As it turned out, Journey was the ideal band to do the impossible at Lollapalooza: Draw complete families to the festival on an otherwise youth-oriented lineup day. While kids at other stages were busy rapping along to Post Malone or breaking out a sweat to internet phenomenon Marc Rebillet, those watching Journey with their parents were experiencing some good old fashioned bonding time.

One couple swayed along to “Open Arms” with a toddler hoisted atop their shoulders as they rocked their youngest in a stroller, a yellow string of lights roped around its handle. Another family of four appeared to join forces with their son’s friends, who nodded along on a beach towel to “Lights” while the rest stood to watch. The opening notes of “Stone in Love” prompted their teenage daughter to throw both hands in the air, yelp in surprise, and whip around to face her mom. Without missing a beat, the two immediately leaned into one another and started singing along.

The majority of people gathered around, however, were clearly waiting for Journey to break out the hits. When Pineda asked the crowd how they were doing after the one-hour mark, a man in his 20s barked at him to play “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Instead, they bounced back with “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.” By then, thousands of younger attendees were sprawled on the ground around the stage’s perimeter, impervious and content to lounge until the two songs they wanted to post on social media popped up.

Eventually, the wait paid off. Journey sandwiched “Faithfully,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” into the final moments of their set and Pineda, who was pitch-perfect all night, never missed a note. Thousands of people seized the moment and hung onto the feeling, their voices flooding the festival grounds as they sang along and fireworks exploded above the stage.

Journey are veteran professionals when it comes to throwing entertaining concerts, and the fans upfront knew that from experience. But for the young festivalgoers and indifferent onlookers who expected a weathered band of baby boomers to twiddle their thumbs for an hour before breaking out jukebox staples, they got to experience arguably the most underrated feeling a music festival can offer: discovering a different side to an artist’s discography that you overlooked up until then.

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

NEAL SCHON And JONATHAN CAIN Reunite On Stage At JOURNEY's First Concert Of 2023

Legendary rockers JOURNEY played their first concert of 2023 last night (Friday, January 27) in Durant, Oklahoma. The two-hour performance at the 3,000-capacity Grand Theater at the Choctaw Casino & Resort marked the band's first appearance since JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain publicly feuded over several issues, including Neal allegedly causing over $1 million in personal expenses to be charged to the band's shared American Express card and Schon demanding that Cain stop playing events for former U.S. president Donald Trump .

JOURNEY will play a second show in Durant tonight (Saturday, January 28),before officially kicking off the main portion of its 50th-anniversary tour on February 4 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with TOTO once again on the bill.

JOURNEY 's setlist for last night's concert was as follows:

01. Only The Young 02. Stone In Love 03. Don't Stop Believin' 04. Lights 05. Send Her My Love 06. Feeling That Way 07. Anytime 08. Escape 09. Dead Or Alive 10. Who's Crying Now 11. Mother, Father' 12. Let It Rain 13. Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' 14. Open Arms 15. Faithfully 16. Girl Can't Help It 17. Wheel In The Sky 18. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) 19. Be Good To Yourself 20. Any Way You Want It

Earlier this month, Cain filed a lawsuit against Schon over the guitarist's personal expenses which were allegedly charged to the American Express card, including $400,000 in a single month last year.

Cain 's allegations come more than two months after Schon filed a lawsuit against his longtime bandmate, contending that he was being denied access to the American Express card.

In a countersuit filed in California state court, Cain said that during the first one-month billing cycle, after Schon obtained the AMEX card, Schon charged more than $50,000 in personal expenses for the billing period ending September 15, 2021. For the one-month billing period ending January 15, 2022, Schon allegedly charged more than $100,000 of his personal expenses on the AMEX card. For the one-month billing period ending February 13, 2022, Schon allegedly charged approximately $30,000 of his personal expenses on the AMEX card. For the one-month billing period ending March 16, 2022, Schon allegedly charged more than $400,000 of his personal expenses on the AMEX card. The charges allegedly included $42,000 to various PayPal accounts, over $104,000 to Chrome Hearts (jewelry and apparel),more than $31,000 to the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City, and over $54,000 for his personal insurance premiums.

According to Cain 's lawsuit, " Schon 's charges placed considerable pressure on JOURNEY and its ability to cover normal tour expenses. Schon was spending JOURNEY 's money, and Cain is the one who was and is ultimately liable for the AMEX Account and Schon 's charges on the AMEX Card. Even with the $30,000 limit on Schon 's card on the Nomota AMEX account," referring to the company Cain and Schon set up to operate the band, " Schon still managed to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional, excessive personal expenses through other tour personnel and travel agents. For example, the budget allocated a maximum of $1,500 per night for hotel rooms for Schon and Cain . However, Schon demanded to stay in hotel suites that cost in excess of $5,000 per night. After the recent tour ended in Honolulu, Hawaii, Schon stayed an extra week in a hotel suite that cost $6,000 a night and charged more than $100,000 in expenses to the AMEX Account."

In a statement to Billboard , Schon 's attorney Skip Miller called allegations "ridiculous" and "as phony as a three dollar bill." He said the countersuit was merely "sour grapes" after a recent incident in which Schon demanded that Cain stop playing for Trump . "We want Cain to just focus on JOURNEY and its fans," Miller said.

Last month, Cain fired back at Schon when the JOURNEY guitarist called him a "hypocrite" for performing the band's 1981 hit song "Don't Stop Believin'" at Trump 's Mar-a-Lago property. Cain , whose wife, Paula White-Cain , is the former president's self-styled spiritual adviser, played the track in November with a backup chorus of U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , Donald Trump Jr. 's fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle and former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake .

" Neal Schon should look in the mirror when he accuses me of causing harm to the JOURNEY brand," Cain said in a statement. "I have watched him damage our brand for years and am a victim of both his — and his wife's — bizarre behavior."

An attorney for Schon sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cain after he performed at Trump 's Florida estate.

The latest legal move came a few weeks after Schon filed his lawsuit against Cain . Cain , for his part, accused Schon of misusing the card, citing his "excessive spending and extravagant lifestyle."

A month earlier, former JOURNEY singer Steve Perry took legal action against both Schon and Cain , asking them to stop registering federal trademarks on the names of many of the band's hits.

Presented by AEG Presents , JOURNEY 's tour with TOTO will make stops in Austin, Montreal and Memphis before wrapping April 25 at the brand-new Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California.

The "Freedom Tour 2023" run includes rescheduled dates in Washington, D.C., plus Hartford, Toronto and Quebec, which were postponed last year due to the coronavirus.

WALNUT CREEK

See artist’s watercolor paintings on synthetic surface yupo.

Now through June 24, the Valley Art Gallery is exhibiting work from artist Juanita Hagberg, who paints watercolors reflecting her experiences and emotional responses to nature, using the synthetic surface Yupo.

Yupo “paper” brings interesting properties to watercolors, as it is smooth and provides an inherent brilliance of color. Hagberg is self-taught, often painting “en plein air” and then further developing her paintings into a more abstract expression of her feelings. Her paintings have been in many juried shows and featured in a variety of publications. She also conducts workshops and gives demonstrations about painting watercolor on Yupo.

The gallery also has a new display of unusual fine crafts and artist-designed gift cards. Gallery staff area available by phone or email to discuss any work that may have sparked your interest — or to arrange a no-obligation, one-on-one gallery appointment at a time of your choosing.

All two-dimensional work is available for sale or rent through the gallery’s “No Regrets” rental option. The gallery is at 1661 Botelho Drive, Suite 110, Walnut Creek. For more information, go online to valleyartgallery.org or call 925-935-4311.

View Native American art until May 31 at Bedford Gallery

Beford Gallery continues its “Re-discovering Native American” art exhibit through May 31 in the gallery at 1601 Civic Drive. The exhibit provides a platform for Native Americans to share their stories in their own voices, challenging historical accounts that often overlook and misrepresent their perspectives.

The collection from 19 artists includes landscape and portrait photographs, offering a glimpse into the lives of community activists and leaders who walk “the red road,” a symbolic expression in many Native communities for living purposefully on a path of positive change.

General admission is $5. For more information, go to bedfordgallery.com online.

‘Phantom Returns’ June 9 with legendary actor D’Ambrosio

El Campanil Theatre at 2 p.m. June 9 will present “The Phantom Returns” starring Franc D’Ambrosio, a masterful performer combining an impeccable voice, signature storytelling and unmatched charisma that brings audiences around the world to their feet.

Best-known for his impressive portrayal of the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical “The Phantom of the Opera,” D’Ambrosio performed as the famed masked man more than 2,100 times.

Affectionately known as the “Iron Man of the Mask,” he held the title of “The World’s Longest-Running Phantom” for more than a decade, bringing more than 5 million theater-goers to their feet in a 6½-year run.

That distinction just scratches the surface of an illustrious career spanning decades, though, including D’Ambrosio’s emotional portrayal of the opera-singing Anthony Corleone, son of Al Pacino and Diane Keaton’s characters in the seven-time Academy Award-nominated film “Godfather III.”

He also has released three successful solo CDs, one of which has the unique distinction as the chosen soundtrack for Barry Manilow’s daily workout. In addition to his one-man shows, he is also currently touring the world with “The Four Phantoms In Concert.”

Visit elcampaniltheatre.com online for tickets, which are $32 for general admission, $29 for seniors and $15 for youths. The theater is at 602 W. Second St. in Antioch.

Gallery’s ‘Ekphrasis Exhibition’ to be displayed until June 28

The Lamorinda Arts Alliance, Lamorinda Arts Council and California Writers Club, Mount Diablo Branch, have collaborated to present “Ekphrasis Exhibition” in the Orinda Library’s art gallery from now through June 28.

The exhibit’s organizers say “ekphrasis” is a Greek word defined as writing that describes, explains or is inspired by another art form, a literary device that began with Plato and Aristotle, and that beautiful things happen when the arts intertwine.

The arts groups, along with the writers club branch, developed this creative project as an exhibition of fine artworks that inspire literary works, which will be on display to be enjoyed by the public, art and literary enthusiasts and collectors.

Visitors to the exhibit will be immersed in the inspired works of more than 90 talented visual artists and authors showcased in a diverse range of literary expressions, including prose/flash in fiction, nonfiction, memoir, essay and poetic forms. The visual artwork is in mixed media, glasswork, sculpture, paintings, photography and porcelain.

The library’s art gallery at 26 Orinda Way in Orinda is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. For more information, visit laa4art.org online.

Town Hall’s ‘New Voices’ series to present ‘Lucía Fuentes’

J. Lynn Jackson’s “Lucía Fuentes” will run June 14-22 at Lafayette’s Town Hall Theatre. The play is the seventh and final installment of the theater’s “New Voices” series and will feature Jackson’s adventurous crime piece. Katja Rivera will direct.

A heinous crime in Mexico triggers global indignation. To honor the victims and their legacy of peace and justice, spiritual guru Hernán Espinoza walks Japan’s Shikoku pilgrimage path. A Buddhist nun who guides Shikoku pilgrims has a vital interest in Hernán’s journey yet senses she must test his intentions.

When lured to a dangerous shortcut, Hernán suffers a breakdown. Not knowing whether he is alive or dead, a man or a woman, a saint or a sinner, in Japan or not, he continues to the end, which, on the circular Shikoku path, is also the beginning.

“From the very first page, I was swept away by J. Lynn Jackson’s epic adventure, ‘Lucia Fuentes’ ” said artistic director Richard Perez. “Hernán, our intrepid protagonist, and his journey into a realm where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, reminded me that each of us carries within us the potential for heroic journeys and personal growth.”

“New Voices” series readings are $20, although there are pay-what-you-can tickets (subject to availability) at the door for all performances. The series is a first for Town Hall Theatre and has now transitioned to the SNAP (Spotlight on New American Plays) Festival.

The newly imagined SNAP Festival is a dynamic platform dedicated to showcasing emerging voices in American Theatre. Town Hall Theatre is at 3535 School St. For more information, visit townhalltheatre.com online or call 925-283-1557.

Town Hall Theatre announces shows for 2024-25 season

Town Hall Theatre has announced its 2024-25 season with the theme “Family: Born into and Chosen!” and featuring an unforgettable journey in which the intricate theme of family takes center stage.

In a world sometimes characterized by division, the troupe will delve into the complexities of family dynamics, exploring the profound connections that bind us together.

“While families may be diverse and complex, our stories reveal universal truths that remind us of our shared humanity,” said Richard Perez, Town Hall’s new artistic director. “Through the lens of equity and inclusion, we celebrate the richness of our differences while embracing the common threads that make us more similar than different.”

First up from Aug. 24 through Sept. 14 will be Eric Pfeffinger’s “Human Error.” Next will be Dec. 7-21 with “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then Some) by Michael Carleton, James Fitzgerald and Jon Alvarez. Bruce Springsteen Documentary About E Street Band World Tour Set at Disney+ and Hulu

Disney+ and Hulu have set a new Bruce Springsteen documentary for an October premiere.

"Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band" will follow the band's 2023-2024 world tour, featuring footage from band rehearsals and backstage moments, conversations with Springsteen as he develops the setlist and archival clips of the E Street Band. The project is intended to complement Springsteen's existing body of autobiographical works, which includes the memoir "Born to Run," the live performance (and documentary) "Springsteen on Broadway," and the films "Western Stars" and "Letter to You."

The documentary is directed by Thom Zimny, the longtime Springsteen collaborator behind "Western Stars" and "Springsteen on Broadway," as well as music docs "The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash" and "Willie Nelson & Family." Zimny also produces alongside Springsteen, Springsteen's manager Jon Landau, Adrienne Gerard and Sean Stuart.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recently capped the first 2024 leg of their world tour and will play 25 shows throughout Europe this spring and summer before returning to North America for more dates beginning in August.

The documentary is not the only Springsteen project soon headed to screens. "The Bear" star Jeremy Allen White is in talks to play the legendary rocker in an upcoming biopic titled "Deliver Me From Nowhere," which will follow the making of the 1982 album "Nebraska." "Succession" star Jeremy Strong is in talks to play Landau , as Variety exclusively reported, while 20th Century Studios recently boarded as distributor of the Gotham Group-produced film.

Bruce Springsteen Documentary About E Street Band World Tour Set at Disney+ and Hulu

‘Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’ Documentary Film to Launch on Hulu and Disney+ this October

Hulu and Disney+ today announced that they will launch Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band in October of this year. An exact launch date is forthcoming.

Springsteen and The E Street Band offer the most in-depth look ever at the creation of their legendary live performances in the new documentary featuring unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to their 2023-2024 world tour.

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band opens a new door to Springsteen’s creative process for fans around the world, sharing fly-on-the-wall footage of band rehearsals and special moments backstage — as well as hearing from Springsteen himself.

These conversations follow Springsteen closely as he develops the story he wants to tell with this tour’s setlist — interspersed with rare archival clips of The E Street Band, underscoring themes of life, loss, mortality and community. In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteen’s memoir Born to Run , Springsteen on Broadway , and the films Western Stars and Letter to You .

journey band setlist

The film was directed by Springsteen’s longtime collaborator, Emmy ® and GRAMMY ® Award winner Thom Zimny ( Western Stars , The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash , Springsteen on Broadway , Willie Nelson & Family , Sly ), and produced by Zimny, Jon Landau, Bruce Springsteen, Adrienne Gerard and Sean Stuart.

The film begins with a one-of-a-kind look at the band’s preparation process, following them from their earliest rehearsals in Red Bank, New Jersey, to performances for tens-of-thousands across continents. All the while, fans get the chance to experience professionally shot footage from the 2023-2024 tour for the first time ever — in addition to hearing firsthand from band members about performing on stage with Springsteen and how they keep the magic of The E Street Band as potent as ever.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band capped the first 2024 leg of their world tour in April; a cross-country U.S. run that brought surprise guests, blistering three-hour shows and setlist rarities (totaling 60 different songs through 11 performances). The band is in the midst of playing 25 shows throughout Europe this spring and summer — after last year’s European tour sold 1.6 million tickets — and will return to North America for more dates from August through late November.
