Sekiro: 13 Things You Need To Know About The Gauntlet Of Strength

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has an endurance mode called Gauntlet of Strength, and here's all you need to know!

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game that keeps on giving. Even after a year since its release, FromSoftware has recently added new content to the game that is free for all players. The 1.05 update included costumes for Sekiro to swap between, online elements such as player-made messages, and the new Gauntlet of Strength mode.

The Gauntlet of Strength is an endurance mode that pits players against a series of bosses back to back. Players that beat these Gauntlets can expect new skins and boss Memories. For those interested in the new mode, here's a selection of things that players should know before heading into the Gauntlet of Strength in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice .

Updated on July 27, 2022, by Jack Pursey: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is considered to be a Soulsborne game, but it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the other games in FromSoftware's critically-acclaimed series. The game is an action-adventure title instead of an action RPG, it features minimal customizability, and the combat system is completely different. One of the things that the game has in common with the other soulsborne releases, however, is its punishingly difficult boss fights.

The Gauntlet of Strength is the ultimate boss fighting challenge and one that truly tests whether the player has mastered Sekiro's gameplay mechanics. To give players some extra help, we've updated this list to include a few more facts about the Gauntlet of Strength.

13 How To Unlock Every Gauntlet

Some players have had a hard time unlocking each of Sekiro's new Gauntlet runs. Thankfully, they are rather straightforward to unlock. Here are the requirements for unlocking each of the four Gauntlet runs:

  • Divine Heir: Beat Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . Any ending will unlock the Divine Heir Gauntlet.
  • Shura: Complete the Shura ending of Sekiro .
  • Severance: Complete any non-Shura ending in a Sekiro playthrough. Immortal Severence, Purification, and the Return endings all count.
  • Mortal Journey: Complete the Divine Heir, Shura, and Severance Gauntlets of Strength.

Note that the Mortal Journey Gauntlet will require the player to beat the game at least twice since players must complete a Shura and non-Shura playthrough to unlock the three prerequisite Gauntlets. Every Gauntlet has rewards for completing them, excluding Mortal Journey.

12 Master Deflections

Aggression is the cornerstone of Sekiro's combat rhythm. Those that have not mastered the game's combat will need to hone their skills if they wish to complete a Gauntlet. Dying during a Gauntlet run will set players back to the very beginning.

Because of this, mastering deflection windows is paramount to surviving the game's harder Gauntlets. Practicing is the best way to improve on this front, but players can quickly become aware of deflection windows by completing a Sekiro playthrough without Kuro's Charm, resulting in every attack dealing chip damage through blocks.

11 Practice Using Reflections Of Strength

Alternatively, players can choose to fight bosses as many times as they please with the new Reflections of Strength introduced in update 1.05 . Reflections let players fight their respective boss as many times as they desire.

Utilize these Reflections to memorize enemy movesets or experiment with new strategies. Players will obtain Reflections from any boss they have fought, even if they have not beaten them. This is especially handy for newer players or those that have yet to beat the Gauntlet's new Inner boss variants.

10 Players Refill Resources After Every Boss Kill

Gauntlet runs don't immediately teleport players to the next arena once players slay a boss, unlike many boss rush mods that have this behavior. Players can rest at a Sculptor's Idol and configure their character before venturing forth.

RELATED: Ghost Of Tsushima: Skills, Gears, And Armor That Make The Game Extra Easy

In other words, players get to refill their Healing Gourds and Spirit Emblems after every kill. Unlock skills that enhance Spirit Emblem carrying capacity to use Prosthetics more frequently during a fight, and make sure to obtain every Gourd Seed before attempting a Gauntlet. Players are going to need all the healing they can get for some of these Gauntlets.

9 Consumables Are Refunded When A Run Ends

Consumables are already valuable in Sekiro due to their potency. Gauntlet runs take this to another level. Not only are items such as the Ceremonial Tanto and sugars invaluable for combat, but they also get refunded when the run ends. If the player has a small number of Sprit Emblems or sugars, use them anyway! They'll come back after the run ends regardless of success or failure.

8 Remove Kuro's Charm Debuff

Many players are going to attempt Gauntlet runs on saves that have completed every ending . Since players will be on a rather far playthrough number, chances are they don't have Kuro's Charm in their inventory. Due to how tough these Gauntlet runs can get, players should consider obtaining Kuro's Charm before attempting these runs for the first time.

For those unaware, completing the game and starting a new playthrough will give players the option of removing Kuro's Charm from their inventory. While players don't have the item, blocks only block a percentage of damage instead of 100%, meaning imperfect deflections and blocking itself will get the player killed. This debuff carries over to Gauntlet runs.

7 Jizo Statues Are Invaluable

Before attempting the harder Gauntlets , obtain as many Jizo Statues as possible. These items will grant the player a free node of Resurrection Power when consumed. Since Gauntlet runs refund any used consumables at the end of the run, now is the perfect time to farm and use them.

6 Start With The Divine Heir Gauntlet

While all four Gauntlets are a massive test of player skill, some are much easier than others. Those looking to start their climb towards killing every boss should start with the Divine Heir Gauntlet. This is a rather short Gauntlet that consists of three early-game bosses.

RELATED: Ghost Of Tsushima: Advanced Tactics Dark Souls Fans Can Use

While that sounds easy, in practice this Gauntlet is rather tough. Players will need to master spacing to beat Oniwa, Prosthetics, and aggression to beat Lady Butterfly, and will need to break old habits if they want to beat tougher augmented Inner Genichiro.

5 Be Wary Of New Attacks

Some Gauntlets have an augmented version of bosses that have the "Inner" prefix to their name. This isn't a simple health and damage increase; these boss variants have entirely new attacks that can change the overall flow of the fight. Whenever an Inner boss is next, take a breather and be ready to tango against a few new attacks. Other than that, these bosses are functionally the same as their normal counterparts.

4 Two Boss Fights Don't Appear

There are two boss fights that don't appear anywhere in the Gauntlet of Strength. The Folding Screen Monkeys and Divine Dragon fights are nowhere to be seen, which is a shame for those that enjoy the encounters.

It's possible that both fights were excluded due to their length as, although they're two of the easiest fights in the game, they're both quite long-winded. Moreover, both fights, especially the Folding Screen Monkeys one, are fairly gimmicky. Gimmick boss fights appear in almost every Soulsborne game and tend to split opinions. FromSoftware may have felt that cinematic gimmick fights didn't fit the Gauntlet of Strength concept.

3 Exploit Enemy Weaknesses

Most of Sekiro's bosses have an Achilles heel the player can exploit. These weaknesses carry over to the Gauntlet as well, so take note of what certain enemies are most vulnerable to.

As for more specifics, Lady Butterfly will stop any midair combo if struck by a single Shuriken. Genichiro has a rather low posture gauge that can easily be filled if the player stays aggressive. Guardian Ape's second phase can be made much easier with the Loaded Spear Prosthetic, ripping the centipede from its neck and dealing massive posture damage. Every Demon of Hatred attack can be parried, and the boss is much easier to counter if players use the Loaded Umbrella Prosthetic.

These are just a few examples of the weaknesses every boss has. Use the Reflections of Strength to experiment with each fight and uncover what a particular boss is weak to.

2 The Boss Order Of Each Gauntlet

Here is the boss order of each gauntlet:

Divine Heir

  • Gyoubu Oniwa
  • Lady Butterfly
  • Inner Genichiro
  • Emma, the Gentle Blade
  • Isshin Ashina
  • Demon of Hatred
  • Inner Father
  • Guardian Ape
  • Great Shinobi - Owl
  • Genichiro, Way of Tomoe
  • Inner Isshin

Mortal Journey

(Good luck!)

  • Genichiro Ashina
  • Corrupted Monk
  • Headless Ape
  • Owl (Father)
  • Isshin, the Sword Saint

1 Rewards For Each Gauntlet

For their hard work, players will earn these rewards upon completing each gauntlet.

RELATED: All Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Cut Content

Upon completion of the Divine Heir gauntlet, players will obtain a new memory, specifically Memory: Inner Genichiro. Players will also earn the Sakura Dance Combat Art, which sees Sekiro perform three mid-air slashes.

For completing the Shura gauntlet, players will unlock Memory: Inner Father and Another's Memory: Shura. The Another's Memory: Shura unlock lets players alter their appearance to a fiery version of Sekiro who appears to have fully embraced the path of the heart-breaking Shura ending. The new skin is purely a cosmetic change.

Those who successfully conquer the Severance gauntlet will be rewarded with Memory: Inner Isshin and Another's Memory: Tengu. Like Another's Memory: Shura, Another's Memory: Tengu is a cosmetic change. It lets players wear the outfit that Isshin wore when inside Ashina Castle where he spoke to Sekiro about the "rats."

One would think that defeating seventeen bosses in a row - in a game that is notorious for its brutally difficult boss fights - would land players a pretty sweet reward. But nope, players earn a grand total of nothing for completing this grueling challenge; aside from the eternal respect of other Sekiro players, of course.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia.

Released as a sort of DLC free to all, the Gauntlets are a series of Boss Rush trials where the player can tackle the games numerous Bosses in a row for some reward. To participate, you need to beat the game by defeating Sword Saint Isshin. If you examine the Idol at the Dilapidated Temple, you can participate in the Gauntlets.

The gauntlets put you up against an Inner Version of a Boss as the final encounter which is a slightly reworked fight. Some have minor changes while others are more complex. They don't really change strategies but can catch you off guard with some new attacks and combos.

Reflections of Strength

This is more of a warm up for some of the Gauntlets. You can re-fight any Boss that gives you a Memory/Remnant after you kill it which is pretty much all the main Bosses. There is nothing new strategy wise but helps prepare for the harder challenges.

Gauntlet of Strength: Severance

This is the first trial and puts you up against the following fights:

  • Guardian Ape
  • Corrupted Monk
  • Genichiro, Way of Tomoe
  • Sword Saint Isshin Ashina (Inner Version)

Isshin is not much of a change so follow the same methods in the base game to defeat him. This is a 5/10 difficulty of danger.

Your reward is Memory: Inner Isshin and Tengu Outfit .

Gauntlet of Strength: Divine Heir

This is likely the easiest challenge mainly because you only haver three Bosses to fight and they are all fairly early fights:

  • Lady Butterfly
  • Genichiro (Inner Version)

This is a 3/10 challenge. Your reward is the Sakura Dance ability which is the new technique that Genichiro uses and the Memory: Inner Genichiro .

Gauntlet of Strength: Shura

Probably as hard as the first trial which includes the following Bosses:

  • Isshin Ashina
  • Demon of Hatred
  • Owl (Father) (Inner Version)

Probably a 7/10 because of the Demon of Hatred fight alone. Inner Owl is also a bit tougher so the extra difficulty comes in here. Your reward is the Memory: Inner Father and the Shura Outfit .

Gauntlet of Strength: Mortal Journey

The hardest of all trials. You can unlock this one if you beat all the other trails. The Bosses you fight here are:

  • Headless Ape
  • Owl (Father)
  • Sword Saint Isshin
  • Inner Genichiro
  • Inner Father
  • Inner Isshin

This is easily a 10/10 trial. Literally all the main Bosses plus the Inner versions are in this one. It starts off easy and progressively gets harder and harder as you go. Your reward is nothing so this is purely for your own satisfaction and bragging rights. Complete this Trial and you have achieved everything in the game so congratulations.

In-Game Description [ ]

Overview [ ].

Gauntlettut1

Upon completing any ending for the first time during a playthrough, Gauntlet of Strength will become available at any Sculptor's Idol .

A Gauntlet of Strength is a series of consecutive battles against the memories of previously defeated bosses .

During these fights, Wolf 's Attack Power is set automatically and any item used is reset at the end of the Gauntlet.

Defeating bosses here won't award Sekiro with any Experience or Sen or, with the exception of the final boss of every Gauntlet, Memory .

After every boss , except the last one, is defeated a Sculptor's Idol will appear with the following options:

  • Purchase Spirit Emblems
  • Battle next extraordinary foe
  • Quit battle

Dying or choosing to " Quit battle " or " Quit game " will kick Wolf out of the Gauntlet, deleting any progress, and back to the last Sculptor's Idol he interacted with.

There are four Gauntlets of Strength:

  • Introduced with Patch 1.05.
  • If Wolf hasn't died yet in the current playthrough, Resurrection won't be available in any Gauntlet of Strength either.
  • The additional Spirit Emblems gained via the Ceremonial Tanto won't reset upon challenging the next Boss , it's therefore recommended to rest and use the Tanto and the Healing Gourd before starting every new fight, as some Bosses won't leave enough time to use both the Tanto and a buff.
  • The Folding Screen Monkeys and Divine Dragon don't appear in any Gauntlet, not even Mortal Journey.
  • Despite not having a Memory associated to them directly, Emma, the Gentle Blade and Genichiro, Way of Tomoe are treated as separate battles from Isshin Ashina and Isshin, the Sword Saint , respectively.
  • While in the main game, the boss of the Fountainhead Palace is called "Corrupted Monk" just like that in Mibu Village ; in Reflection of Strength she's named "True Monk" (or 宮の破戒僧, "Corrupted Monk of the Palace", in japanese) like in her Memory .
  • 1 Isshin Ashina
  • 2 Isshin, the Sword Saint
  • 3 Father's Bell Charm

Sekiro: shadows die twice - how to survive the gauntlet of strength mode.

Prepare for the Gauntlets of Strength by using Reflections of Strength in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to practice for dangerous bosses.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game that prides itself on being brutal and challenging. In this souls-like game, players will have to grab their katana and hone their skills in order to face a multitude of powerful, ghostly bosses. As the game has been out since March of 2019, its developers have been releasing new content in the form of free updates to keep players interested , including the Gauntlets of Strength.

Gauntlets of Strength were added to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice on October 29, 2020. Players will only have one life while fighting various enemies for a chance to win skins, a new weapon art, and other rewards. If Sekiro dies at any point during the gauntlet, they will need to restart at the beginning. To access a Gauntlet of Strength, interact with the Sculptor’s Idol and select “Gauntlets of Strength”. Players can also use “Reflections of Strength” to practice fighting against different bosses. There are currently four Gauntlets of Strength that players can choose from Severance, Divine Heir, Shura, and Mortal Journey.

Reflections of Strength in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

To practice for the Gauntlets of Strength, players should replay battles against challenging bosses in order to perfect their technique and cover their weak points. Below is a list of bosses for each gauntlet:

  • Guardian Ape
  • Great Shinobi Owl
  • Corrupted Monk
  • Genichiro, Way of Tomoe
  • Inner Isshin (Isshin, the Sword Saint)

Divine Heir

  • Gyoubu Oniwa
  • Lady Butterfly

  • Emma, the Gentle Blade
  • Isshin Ashina
  • Demon of Hatred

  • Headless Ape
  • Corrupted Monk (True)
  • Owl (Father)
  • Isshin, the Sword Saint
  • Inner Genichiro
  • Inner Father
  • Inner Isshin

If any of these bosses proves too difficult, especially in the Mortal Journey Gauntlet of Strength, hop into its Reflections of Strength battle to perfect technique, timing, and get a confidence boost.

Equipment for Gauntlets of Strength in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Players can also equip prosthetic items , quick items, and activate abilities before jumping into the fold to battle more enemies. Once players have defeated a boss, they can regroup at the “Place of Reflection” to rest, purchase spirit emblems, and continue on to the next boss.

With the ability to practice boss battles, plan out equipped items, and access the Gauntlet of Strength, players will be able to charge onward to victory with their rewards.

Gauntlet of Strength: Severance Bosses

Guardian Ape (獅子猿, Lion Monkey, Shishizaru ) is a required Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . Bosses are special Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as " Shinobi Execution " (or other message, in certain circumstances). You will need to perform multiple Deathblows  on them in order to defeat them, and filling their  Posture Gauge is one way to accomplish this, as well as depleting their health. Decreasing their health will also make it so their Posture Gauge refills more slowly, assisting you in accomplishing this feat.

The Guardian Ape is an immortal being that guards the Lotus of the Palace . It has white fur with a red scar running vertical from the top of its head to its left cheek through its left eye. The Ape has large, sharp claws on its hands and feet. There is no fur covering Ape's buttocks. Noticeably, there is a large nodachi-style weapon running through the neck of the beast.

The Guardian Ape has two (2) health bars that must removed in order to kill this boss. During the first phase of  the fight you will be dealing with a beast-type enemy that roams around the arena on all fours. You can easily stun the beast using the  Shinobi Firecracker . Dealing the first deathblow to this enemy will decapitate it using the large blade through its neck. As an immortal being the ape will now resurrect and fight you with the sword used to decapitate it in its right hand, and its severed, still living head in its left. The ape is no longer a beast-type enemy and has become an apparition-type enemy. The Guardian Ape (headless) is not affected by the Shinobi Firecracker , but will now take additional damage from Divine Confetti , the Mortal Blade , and--in specific instances--the  Loaded Spear . The Loaded Umbrella can be used to block the terror status from the blood scream which allows you to capitalize on this opening.

Defeating the Guardian Ape unlocks the  Headless Ape boss fight in the Ashina Depths .

Guardian Ape Location

  • Sunken Valley Passage : Found in a pool of water near the Bodhisattva Valley Sculptor's Idol.
  • This boss is not optional.

Guardian Ape Rewards

  • Memory: Guardian Ape
  • Slender Finger (Used to create the Finger Whistle Prosthetic Tool)
  • Lotus of the Palace (located in the cave behind the fog wall guarded by the Guardian Ape)
  • 4,000 Exp (NG), 13,000 (NG+)
  • 19,500/ 23,401 XP without Kuro's Charm (NG+2)
  • 70201 XP without Kuro's Charm (NG+7)

Guardian Ape Strategies

Video strategies, strategy write-up.

The key to this phase is to stay close to the Guardian Ape, and bait it into attacking. The vast majority of its attacks can be blocked, so defend and wait for its combos to finish before attacking. While this is not overly hard, reading the combos can be a bit tricky at first.

Be wary to its body slam attack, where it jumps on its back and proceeds to thrash the ground. When it does that, try to stay away from its arms and hit his head.

Its most dangerous attacks in this phase are its hand swipe grab and its body slam grab, both unblockable. To avoid the hand swipe grab, simply jump; for the body slam grab, dodge as it jumps.

Another vicious attack is a poisonous poo, which when thrown inflicts massive damage and instant poison status. However, this attack is very telegraphed as it jumps high before throwing the feces; simply run below as it jumps and retaliate, as its recovery from this attack is quite lengthy. Additionally, it also has a fart attack which is often used when Sekiro is behind it; while this doesn't inflict instant poison, it fills the poison status bar considerably.

Occasionally, the Guardian Ape will jump back and unleash a roar. A prompt to use the Grappling Hook  will appear, allowing Sekiro to close the gap and causes a brief stagger.

Finally, being a beast-type, the Guardian Ape is very susceptible to the Shinobi Firecracker , which can be used to briefly stun it. The Flame Vent is also very effective, inflicting flame status and having a chance to knock it down.

In this phase, its attacks are much easier to deflect and will inflict more posture damage compared to the previous phase, so try to deflect as much as possible. However, it is advised to stay far from the Guardian Ape as its attacks have higher range. Only move in close to deflect attacks when its health is low, so that you can build up Posture .

Be mindful of its sword swipes that cover a wide area. Don't stay on top of it attacking for too long. Attack it a few times after its combos and back away.

The Guardian Ape has a very telegraphed attack where it lunges forward with a swipe while falling on the ground, leaving it very vulnerable. To capitalize on this, jump over as it dives and strike it in the air, following with a full combo.

Another attack that can be exploited is its large overhead attack, that be deflected; this has quite a large window of opportunity, and once deflected it will inflict massive stagger, allowing for a quick flurry of hits before the Guardian Ape recovers. Also, when it is down, using the Loaded Spear  and directly attacking its neck will allow to pull out a centipede and do massive posture damage.

Its most dangerous attack is a battle roar, which unleashes shockwaves that fill up the terror  meter, meaning it can inflict Terror status, which instantly kills Sekiro. Despite being focused on terror build-up, the Phoenix's Lilac Umbrella  isn't required, any  Loaded Umbrella  type prosthetic will completely negate the scream. Phoenix's Lilac Umbrella can still be useful with Projected Force , as the slash will temporarily be buffed with a Divine Confetti effect. Note that this buff will override and cancel any other buffs on your sword, such as actual Divine Confetti or Living Force .

Since in this phase the Guardian Ape changes from a beast-type to an apparition-type, the Shinobi Firecracker  does not affect it. The Flame Vent is still is effective, inflicting flame status, but it doesn't knock it down.

A long but safe strategy is to constantly hold down the run button, and kite the ape around the arena. When the ape dives, leap over the ape and swing three times. As soon as you hit the ground, start running from the ape again.

Attacks & Counters

Guardian ape lore.

  • The Guardian Ape is an ape who became undying, or infested, by some means. This caused it to grow very old. It's mate however, did not, and died while the Guardian Ape kept living for many years. However, the Guardian Ape wanted another mate, and tended to the lotus of the palace carefully, since the aroma of this flower would attract a new mate. however, the Guardian Ape's potential love life was cut short by Sekiro, as the Guardian Ape was killed by him. It does appear to find a new mate in the  second encounter with a simple call and without the aroma of the lotus, but that too is cut short by Sekiro.
  • According to the description of the  Slender Finger item, along with dialogue told you by the Sculptor should you give him Monkey Booze : the Guardian Ape is most likely responsible for the death of the character "Kingfisher," who was a female shinobi that once trained in the  Sunken Valley with the Sculptor when the hermit was still a master-less shinobi. Why the the two parted ways (as the Sculptor expresses surprise upon you returning the Slender Finger to him) and how the Guardian Ape came to kill Kingfisher are still a mystery, however.
  • The skeleton of an ape can be found in the small cave right above the Guardian Ape's Burrow, where one  Monkey Booze  can be found.  Is very likely it is the remain of the Guardian Ape's former mate.  The booze is possibly an offering to the dead(either from the monkey siting besides it, or from the Guardian Ape itself,).

Guardian Ape Notes & Trivia

  • During Phase 1, this boss is a beast-type enemy, thus the Shinobi Firecracker  stuns it and deals additional Posture damage, while using Oil and the Flame Vent  prosthetic tool can set it on fire and inflict the Burn status. During Phase 2 of the fight, however, the Guardian Ape becomes an apparition-type enemy, and thus will only take extra damage from Divine Confetti .
  • If you attack under the effect of   Divine Confetti while the Guardian Ape is screaming, you'll hear a special sound and visible white slashes will apear each time you attack (specially noticeable when using Combat Arts). It's really dangerous to do without having resistance to Terror or on low health, so make sure to use some Mottled Purple Gourd or Pacifying Agent  beforehand.
  • During Phase 2, if you parry the Ape's overhead slam attack and stun it, then use the Loaded Spear 's "pull" attack by activating the spear twice, you can actually pull the centipede out from the Ape, dealing high damage to its health and posture.
  • The Finger Whistle Shinobi Tool does not work on the Guardian Ape
  • Like the Folding Screen Monkeys and the monkeys found throughout the Sunken Valley , the Guardian Ape is most likely based off the Japanese Macaque.|

Great Shinobi Owl   (大忍び 梟,   Great Shinobi Owl, Daishinobi Fukurō )   is a Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . Bosses are special Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as " Immortality Severed " or " Shinobi Execution ". You will need to perform multiple Deathblows  on them in order to defeat them, and filling their  Posture Gauge is the one way to accomplish this, depletng their health is another. However, decreasing their health will make it so their Posture Gauge depletes more slowly, assisting you in accomplishing that feat.

Great Shinobi Owl Location

  • Ashina Castle : Found after the Ashina Castle area, after it got invaded by shinobi. You can get there  by taking the same way you used to get up to the Genishiro Ashina fight at the Upper Tower - Ashina Dojo Sculptor's Idol.
  • If you choose to stay loyal to Kuro, you engage in a fight against Owl. Otherwise you fight against Emma instead.
  • Please see Owl (Father) for another boss that you may also face in Hirata Estate  while working towards the Purification Ending . See Endings  for more information
  • This boss is not optional if you choose to serve Kuro.

Great Shinobi Owl Rewards

  • Memory: Great Shinobi
  • Aromatic Branch
  • 6000 Exp (NG) / 12000 Exp (NG+) / 18000 Exp (NG++)
  • 21600 Exp without Kuro's Charm (NG+2)
  • 64800 Exp without Kuro's Charm (NG+7)

Great Shinobi Owl Strategies

Strategy writeup.

NOTE: This boss is capable of using a powerful Mikiri Counter which deals massive (often fatal) damage. As such, it is advised not to use thrust attacks unless Owl is open to counterattacks. Unlike his Hirata counter part however, Shadow Rush will not trigger his mikiri counter.

In phase 1 you want to bait him into doing 3 things. First is the 2x shuriken throw and overhead jump attack. When he does this you want to dodge or deflect the shurikens and sidestep the attack and then counterattack. Running directly behind Owl will allow you to make an extra attack before he is able to block again. Be wary, though: Owl also has an attack where he quickly throws a single shuriken, followed by a devastating sweep that deals high posture damage. Be sure not to confuse the two!

Second, you want to hit him when he tries to hit you with the green cloud that prevents you from healing and buffing. Sidestep and then strike, but make sure you don't get debuffed. You want him to keep doing this maneuver, and he will cease to do so if you get affected. However, the Divine Child of Rejuvenation 's  Rice  is not prevented.

Lastly, you want to bait him into attacking with a two hit attack that starts from his right and then the second will be back to his left. You want to deflect the first strike and then dodge through the second and then punish him. Do not attempt this if the attack begins on his left, as it is much harder to dodge through this combo.

In phase 2 you want to do the same things, only you need to run away when he does the smoke. If you are not debuffed then he will usually try to debuff you here, which is easy to dodge. If you are debuffed, however, you will have to dodge a much stronger attack.

Alternate strategy: Owl is, like Wolf, without super armor on his special moves. It is possible to use a normal sword swing to knock him out of his jumps, shuriken throw, anti-healing bomb and gunpowder throws. Attacking twice so that the second attack produces the deeper sound (enemy deflects you), then parry one sword swing from him, then repeat. If he attempts a non-sword move he usually will be interrupted by your attack.  It's quite possible to literally push him in a corner and pressure him to death in both phases. This works especially well since he will still try to dash back away from you occasionally, which results in him essentially jumping in place because he's against a wall, giving you some free hits. When your posture is low, back off quickly and block a short while to recharge, then go back in.  You may find this much easier than handling his large repertoire of moves when he is given space.

If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "SHINOBI EXECUTION" upon the screen.

Great Shinobi Owl Lore

Dying to him in combat makes him recite the Iron Code including the third rule: "One! The parent is absolute. Their will must be obeyed. ...Yet I'm sensing some insubordination" "Two! The master is absolute. You give your life to keep him safe. You bring him back at any cost. ...At this rate, you'll lose him again" "Three! Fear is absolute. There is no shame in losing one battle. But you must take revenge by any means necessary! ...I wonder if you've got it in you - to bring me down."

For other lore not directly related to this boss fight, see the Owl .

Great Shinobi Owl Notes & Trivia

If you attack with a thrust attack or a charged attack from the Loaded Spear prosthetic tool, Owl will mikiri counter it and perform a deathblow on Wolf.

You cannot apply a weapon buff such as Divine Confetti or Bestowal Ninjutsu prior to the fight as Sekiro will automatically sheath his sword when approaching Owl to initiate dialogue. You can however apply buff right in the border of the arena on the outside of the railings.

Corrupted Monk  (real name Yao) ( 破戒僧, Depraved Monk )  is a Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . Bosses are special Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as " Immortality Severed " or " Shinobi Execution ".

The Corrupted Monk can be fought twice throughout the game: once with just one health bar and then again with three depending on the chosen ending.

Corrupted Monk Location

  • Ashina Depths - Water Mill: At the very end of Mibu Village , guarding the entrance to the Wedding Cave. Defeating this boss is required to collect the Shelter Stone .
  • Fountainhead Palace : She will be faced at the start of this area. Defeating this boss is required to proceed further into the palace.
  • Depending on the player's choices throughout the game (i.e. what ending the player is pursuing), the fight against the True Corrupted Monk at Fountainhead Palace may be automatically skipped entirely and inaccessible, making the boss optional. The Ghost Version found in Ashina Depths is required regardless of the ending desired.

Corrupted Monk Strategies

At mibu village  (illusion monk).

The player must fight the single health bar illusion version in Mibu Village of the Ashina Depths to collect the Shelter Stone in order to proceed through the story. She is not an Apparition type enemy, so Divine Confetti will not deal extra damage to her however she is an illusion so, Snap Seed , Fistful of Ash and/or Lazulite Axe can be used to briefly stun her; with that in mind, it is possible to perform stunlocks and prevent any counter attack. If the player has the Phantom Kunai with swarming upgrade, this does a lot of damage. With the tanto to provide another 15 emblems, the Monk can be brought to about 25% health with Phantom Kunai alone. It may still be worth trying without the swarming upgrade. The Snap Seeds can also be used to significantly lower the Monk's health.

In this fight, the Corrupted Monk has a lot of health and takes very little Posture damage. Because of this, the only effective way to defeat her is to chip away her health by attacking when she is wide open, usually after her many swipe attacks. She has two perilous attacks, the sweep can be jumped, and a thrust that can be Mikiri Countered . Also, the Monk tends to use single big moves when Wolf is at mid range, jumping in for one air hit and two ground hits (let the landing cancel the air attack lag), then jumping away to mid range works well.

Many of her attacks have high ending lag, meaning the player can use this to their advantage and deal direct damage as she recovers. She has two jumping attacks one with a sweep and another with an overhead slash, which the player can run below and attack her exposed back; for the overhead slash, the player can also sidestep and strike as she lands.

One of her most dangerous attacks is a upwards slash that goes through Sekiro's defenses, meaning it cannot be blocked; however it can be deflected, though the timing is very precise. Another attack that should be avoided is a continuous spinning attack with the Naginata, which can quickly exhaust Sekiro 's Posture gauge; since the area where she is fought is wide open, the player can run away when she performs this attack. She tends to perform this attack when away from the player, and has a higher tendency to do so if the player uses any consumable (such as the Healing Gourd ).

The player will receive the Memory: Corrupted Monk and Mibu Breathing Technique Latent Skill upon defeating this boss.

At Mibu Village (deathblow strat)

(Works in earlier versions, need to confirm on v1.03) On top of the stairs on the boss stage, right besides the stone door, there are 2 monoliths (one on each side). Get the monk close to one of the monoliths with her back facing it. Use a firecracker to stun/Bait her into a jump attack and run towards the monolith. Jump towards the monolith and use the monolith to double jump backwards towards the monk. Lock on mid air and the aerial deathblow red circle should appear. If done right, you can instantly down her from full health to 0.

(Works with v1.04) Using the same strategy above, but instead jump on the monolith approaches very close to the monk from behind and using Aged Feather Mist Raven combined with Contact Medicine to teleport upwards, the deathblow red circle should then appear.

At Fountainhead Palace  (True Monk)

The True Corrupted Monk will be fought at the entrance to the Fountainhead Palace. She must be defeated in order to proceed further into the palace. The boss will have 3 health bars that must be removed to be defeated.

This phase is very similar to her illusion fight at Mibu Village , however, she takes significantly more Posture damage, which makes deflecting far more effective. She also has less health, considering there are 3 health bars. The same strategy of  the Mibu Village fight can be employed here, as she has the same attacks. She tends to use her perilous attacks more often, though; additionally, she doesn't use her whirlwind attack until the third phase.

In this phase and all subsequent ones, she is susceptible to the Shinobi Firecracker , which can be used to briefly stun her; however, this is best used on the third phase.

At the start of this phase, the Corrupted Monk will disappear, and the area will be enveloped by mist. She then proceeds to three shadow illusions of herself to attack the player in rapid succession. The shadows disappear in between attacks, making lock-on difficult. The shadows do not need to be defeated in order to the illusion to be dispelled; the Monk will eventually end the illusion and return to fight the player. However, she may cast the illusion again if the player is unable to deal the second Deathblow  swiftly. If you are having trouble avoiding the shadows, killing yourself with a Bite Down pill will instantly dispel them.

It is possible to perform an aerial Deathblow on the Corrupted Monk as she casts or dispels the illusion by positioning Sekiro  on the tallest tree near the temple and jumping down when the Corrupted Monk appears in a squatted over position. Doing this will immediately end second phase. This is best done the moment after the player Deathblows her in the first phase, by grappling  the nearest tree branch and proceed to grapple to highest branch, located on the left side of the bridge (with your back to the Idol). From there, look down to see the true Monk and standing in the middle of the bridge; if so, plunge attack her from here. This branch is also extremely useful for dodging the spirits she summons during her second phase, as only the first one seems to be able to hit you there, and not often.

The rest of her moveset remains the same as the first phase; so employ the same tactics.

In this phase, a demon centipede will erupt from her body through her neck. She retains most of the moveset from the first phase, but is far more aggressive than before; on the other hand some of her attacks are a bit more telegraphed and predictable. In this phase she tends to use overhead attacks as a finishing move.

Notably, she gains a new perilous attack where the demon centipede spews toxic goo in front of her, which can inflict Terror . It is advised to sidestep or use the jump kick when she uses this and retaliate, as this attack has a quite lengthy ending lag. Another attack involving the centipede is a toxic cloud; however this is not a perilous attack.

In this phase she uses the whirlwind attack seen in her fight at Mibu Village . Simply run away when she starts spinning.

She is very susceptible to the Shinobi Firecracker in this phase. Simply use the Firecracker, hit the Corrupted Monk 3 to 4 times, and use the Firecracker again, essentially stunlocking her.

Living Force with the flamethrower also works very well; the burning state procs easily and does significant posture damage.

After depleting her third bar, make sure to perform both Deathblows when prompted to finish her for good. The player will receive the Memory: True Monk  and the Dragon's Tally Board  Key Item upon defeating this boss.

"Cheesing" at Fountainhead Place

As of update 1.03 you cannot deathblow the Corrupted Monk at the beginning of the fight. While the fight against Corrupted Monk in Fountainhead Palace isn't a particularly difficult, there's an extremely easy way to deal with the boss by exploiting its AI. If the player grapples  the high tree behind the Corrupted Monk, a Deathblow  can be used on her, essentially allowing to skip the second phase. This can be done as soon as the second phase starts, as she will disappear to summon her shadow illusions and return to the same starting point when dispelling it.

In the third phase, since Corrupted Monk doesn't gain resistance to "stun" effects like the Shinobi Firecracker and the Fistful of Ash  after being hit, you can cheese the boss by stunlocking her with these items and hitting her between them (firecracker, 2 hits, firecracker, 2 hits, firecracker, 2 hits, etc.) until you deplete her posture or health bar.

Corrupted Monk Notes & Trivia

  • The illusion version of this boss is one of two bosses that doesn't end with a special execution.
  • Upon confronting the  Memory: True Monk  in order to increase  Sekiro 's attack power, it is revealed that she was the guardian of the  Fountainhead Palace  before being possessed, and that her name was Priestess Yao.
  • She is based on a Japanese folk story of  Yao Bikuni  (八百比丘尼, "eight-hundred (years) Buddhist priestess"). The story begins with a fisherman who once caught a strange fish with a human face (Japanese mermaid-like creature called Ningyo, who's flesh is said to grant a long life). He served it's meat to guests, but the guests were wise and hid the meat in their robes to avoid eating it. One man was drunk on sake, and returning home he thoughtlessly gave the meat to his daughter and she ate it. The daughter would later marry, but she stayed young as her husband grew old and died. After marrying and widowing again and again she eventually became a Buddhist nun and wandered various countries. But everyone she knew always died, she came to hate her immortality and her life was filled with emptiness and suffering. At the age of 800 years she finally died despite her immortality, having simply lost the will to live. The story is know as a cautionary tale for those who fear death and wish for eternal life.
  • The Corrupted Monk is depicted as wearing a  Hannya  (般若) mask, often characterized by two sharp horns, metallic eyes, and a leering mouth. The Hannya mask is used in noh and kyōgen Japanese theater, as well as Shinto ritual kagura dances. It portrays the souls of women who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy.
  • The Corrupted Monk is found during the beta version of the game, which was playable at E3, Gamescom and TG

Corrupted Monk Lore

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe(巴流葦名弦一郎,School of Tomoe Ashina Genichiro) is a Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . This page refers to the naming change for the Genichiro Ashina boss fight, that happens after he enters his second phase. Bosses are special Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as " Immortality Severed " or " Shinobi Execution ". You will need to perform multiple Deathblows  on them in order to defeat them, and filling their Posture Gauge is the only way to accomplish this. However, decreasing their health will make it so their Posture Gauge depletes more slowly, assisting you in accomplishing this feat.

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe Location

  • Ashina Castle : At the very top of the castle, after the Ashina Dojo Idol. After you defeat him, Genichiro will remove his armor and transform into this form (This is not an optional boss fight).
  • Ashina Reservoir : Only met if you "Choose to Serve Kuro" when questioned by Owl on top of Ashina Castle. He is met in the Silvergrass Field area, located in the same place you originally met him during your escape through the tutorial.

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe Rewards

  • Memory: Genichiro
  • Bloodsmoke Ninjutsu
  • 15,000 EXP (NG+)

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe Strategies

Strategy write-up.

During Phase One, Genichiro Way Of Tomoe will take off his armor and become more maneuverable--but he will switch to being primarily concerned with offense and stop defending himself as much. He gains some lightning-charged attacks which can be used against him with the Redirect Lightning skill. If they do hit, they may well one-shot you. He still keeps his bow but he uses it less often. He has a thrust attack where he leaps into the air and launches himself at you sword-first; use a Mikiri Counter when he does this and be sure to punish. Genichiro will swipe 5 times at the player, which the player can avoid using timed Deflects or correctly timed evasions. The swipes cover three quarters of Genichiro's surrounding area--the only open spot to attack is his back left. When he strikes, he will not stop until all 5 swipes are complete.

Sticking close and doing normal attacks, then deflecting once when he parries you (deeper sound), then keep normal swinging. The difference between this Genichiro and the previous armored version is that this one has no super armor on his moves any more. Hitting with a normal attack will knock him out of any aerobatics. Cornering him until his posture breaks is a relatively straightforward way to finish the fight.

His offense is a bit intimidating at first but his reduced defense, vulnerability to a lightning reversal, and his aggressiveness will see you through.

Genichiro, Way of Tomoe Lore

Genichiro, way of tomoe notes & trivia.

  • When Genichiro "revives" after you first defeat him atop Ashina Castle , one can see that he has become a "Red Eye," type entity--which both the physician Doujun and his master Dosaku are researching in their quest to attain immortality.
  • The blackened portions of Genichiro's body, which are mostly located across his arms and shoulders, are most likely remnants of his training to master the "Lightning of Tomoe," as they correspond to exactly where he channels lightning during his electricity-based attacks.

Isshin, The Sword Saint (剣聖、葦名一心; Kensei Ashina Isshin;  Sword Saint, Isshin Ashina )  is a Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice . Bosses are special Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as " Immortality Severed " or " Shinobi Execution ". You will need to perform multiple Deathblows  on them in order to defeat them, and filling their  Posture Gauge is the one way to accomplish this, delpleting their health is another. However decreasing their health will make it so their Posture Gauge depletes more slowly, assisting you in accomplishing this feat.

See Isshin Ashina for the NPC version. This page contains endgame spoilers.

Isshin, The Sword Saint Location

  • Endgame Ashina Reservoir : Found down the tunnel at the Near the Secret Passage Sculptor's Idol.
  • You have to fight  Genichiro, Way of Tomoe  first. If killed by either Genichiro or Isshin you have to fight Genichiro again.
  • This boss is not optional if you choose to serve Kuro when talking to Owl. See Endings for details
  • See Isshin Ashina for the NPC version and Isshin Ashina (Boss) for another ending fight.

Isshin, The Sword Saint Rewards

  • Memory: Saint Isshin
  • Dragon Flash
  • 25,000 XP NG+
  • 50,000 XP NG+3 with Kuro's Charm
  • 135,001 XP without Kuro's Charm  (NG+7/8)

Isshin, The Sword Saint Strategies

Phase 1: He will start as Genichiro, Way of Tomoe. The fight will be pretty standard as the 3rd phase near Kuro’s room on the rooftops. Aside from the big, black Mortal blade swings he starts with. You can dodge behind him during the first swing and get easy hits in, staggering his second set of swings. He will lunge, and with enough distance, Mikiri counter makes this fight simple. He only has one Vitality bar, and once you deathblow him, a cutscene will play as Isshin steps out of him.

Isshin Phase 1: He will start a decent distance away from you. His main attacks will be a rather quick. One of his main ones being a double slash with considerable distance. He will sheath his sword and it will flash white, then he will dash and double slash. Deflecting both attacks is an option however, you can run backwards and sprint to the side. Once he slashes he is open for a quick two hits. His main slashes are a three to four hit combo, delaying between each hit. A thrust for an easy Mikiri counter, which will be telegraphed as he will end up in the thrust position before committing. Along with these attacks, he will do a long range wind attack, which can be dodge by running sideways as you can get a couple free hits on him this way as well. And a close range, full screen sweep, giving you just enough time to sprint backwards before it goes off. Once you get the deathblow in phase 1, he may continue to attack for a second before stomping the ground to begin phase 2.

Isshin Phase 2: Phase 2 is a massive difficulty increase from phase 1.Once he stomps the ground, he will do knockback damage, but not Vitality damage. Pulling a spear and swiping it in a tight circle around himself. If timed correctly, you maybe be able to get a hit or two in before he begins his assault. Along with the spear, he will have a short sword with him, along with a rapid fire gun. During this phase, he will keep the wind sweep attack, using it randomly throughout the fight. He will be consistently more aggressive, moving towards you if you make too large of a gap, firing the pistol if the gap gets too large. Making a large gap, you may be able to bait him into using a thrust that can easily be Mikiri countered. He will do large, heavy hitting overheads, usually one after another that can be deflected at the cost of heavy posture damage. Dodging sideways as he descends from the overhead, you can easily dodge the hit and get a few hits in yourself. After Isshin deflects one of your blows, sometimes he will jump backwards and make a sweep at you with his spear. Right as he does this, dodging into the attack (towards him) will allow you to get several hits on him as well. Be careful doing this, as he may do another overhead directly after. Dodging can keep distance, as much as he may spam the gun, is the easiest way to bait him into thrusting, easy overhead dodges, and breaking his posture overall. NOTE: Using the Loaded Umbrella will save you from taking ANY vitality or posture damage if you are struggling to dodge/deflect some of the perilous attacks (unless he is using lightning, which doesn't come until phase 3) AND Isshin will take considerable posture damage if you are using the umbrella to deflect!! You can use the umbrella to help cheese your way through if other means are not working for you. Deathblow on this phase will move him into phase 3.

Isshin Phase 3: Almost the same as phase 2, except he has three new attacks. One being a large swing, in which he covers his spear in lightening and swings it at you. You will want to get close when he does this and jump, as to deflect it directly back at him for big Vitality and posture damage, along with a flurry of free hits. His second attack will be similar to his phase 1 long range wind attack, the main difference is instead of it being vertical, it will be more of a distance slash attack. Third new attack will be adding lightning damage to his large overhead attacks. You can deflect the lightning, although the timing can be difficult. Strategy will be the same as his phase 2 fight. Bait out the Mikiri counter along with his lightning attack, and this phase should go smoother than phase 2. Upon giving him the final deathblow, do not miss the Mortal Blade deathblow, or you will have to go at his third phase again.

If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "IMMORTALITY SEVERED" upon the screen.

Isshin, The Sword Saint Lore

  • The reason why this younger version of Isshin appears is due to Genichiro using the Black Mortal Blade on himself, as a sacrifice, to bring his grandfather back from the underworld. As described by the Black Scroll key item, the Black Mortal Blade: "is said to hold the power to open a gate to the underworld. It is through this power that it creates life."
  • Why this younger version of Isshin chooses to fight you, rather than let you go, can be surmised in the dialogue right before the fight: Genichiro has used the blade to bind Isshin to his final wish, which is to bring glory to the Ashina Clan and win the war (by getting the blood of the Heir) where he could not.

Isshin, The Sword Saint Notes & Trivia

  • Voice Actor: Andre Sogliuzzo (English), Tetsuo Kanao (Japanese)
  • The Japanese honorary title of Kensei (剣聖) is only given to a warrior of legendary skill in swordsmanship. The literal translation of kensei is "sword saint", which implies a higher degree of perfection and moral dimension than the more commonly used "sword master" (剣豪,  kengo ). The title is not to be confused with the term "swordsman" (剣士,  kenshi ).
