How to Choose a New Zealand Tour

Choosing a travel tour requires careful consideration to ensure that it aligns with your interests, preferences, and physical capabilities.

Research Tour Operators

Start by researching reputable tour operators that specialize in tours for mature travelers. Look for companies with a track record of positive reviews, responsible travel practices, and experienced local guides.

Tour Itinerary

Review the tour itinerary in detail. Ensure it covers the destinations and experiences you are interested in, whether it’s cultural immersion, scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, or a combination of activities.

Consider the group size. Smaller groups often provide a more personalized experience and allow for meaningful interactions with fellow travelers and guides.

Physical Demands

Assess the physical demands of the tour. Some tours may involve extensive walking or more adventurous activities, so choose one that matches your fitness level and preferences.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Check what is included in the tour package, such as accommodations, meals, activities, and transportation. Compare the value offered by different tour companies.

Flexibility

Look for tours that offer a balance between structured activities and free time, allowing you to explore on your own or take a break when needed.

Travel Style

Identify the travel style that suits you best. It could be a leisurely-paced tour, an adventure-focused one, or a blend of both.

Travel Insurance

Ensure that you have appropriate travel insurance that covers your age and the activities included in the tour.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from other travelers who have taken the tour to get a better understanding of their experiences and satisfaction levels.

How to Prepare for a New Zealand Tour

Obtain necessary documents.

Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity from your planned departure date. Depending on your nationality, you may also need to apply for a visa before traveling to New Zealand.

Check Health and Vaccination Requirements

Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic to ensure you are up-to-date with vaccinations and to get advice on any specific health precautions for New Zealand.

Pack Appropriately

Pack comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, including layers for varying temperatures. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, and any specialized gear required for specific activities.

Learn about the Culture

Familiarize yourself with New Zealand’s customs, traditions, and etiquette to show respect for the local culture.

Plan for Free Time

If your tour includes free time, research activities or places of interest you’d like to explore during those periods.

Have you been to New Zealand? Are you planning a trip to New Zealand? Which cities or areas would you like to visit and why? Tell us about it in the comments below.

I very much enjoyed the shout out to New Zealand, it’s been on my list for some time. However, I would have appreciated it even more if you could mention the tours that have no single supplement. I’m sure I’m not the only one who struggles to find group tours that are affordable as a newly single woman.

Sue

I live in Australia and have visited NZ several times. It’s a beautiful place and well worth seeing. Another way of traveling is on a cruise and there are several cruise companies that sail from Sydney or you can join one in Auckland. My husband and I traveled with Princess Cruises on a Christmas cruise a few years ago. It’s a perfect way to see both islands as they usually travel around the circumference calling in at most of the cities, where you can disembark and go on excursions to the mountains, lakes and wineries. The Maori culture is very interesting and the people are very welcoming. Of course the scenery is spectacular and the wineries and Te Papa museum in Wellington well worth a visit. Just do it…you won’t be disappointed.

Janne Perry

Thank you for promoting our lovely little country 😊 I’m in New Zealand and all of the tours above look fabulous! We’re a pretty friendly bunch and it’s a safe place for travellers. Lovely place for foodies to visit too! The weather can be very much ‘four seasons in one day’ so packing for layering is a good suggestion. Bring the swimsuit regardless of season as there are hot springs in many places and a LOT of coastline! Come on over…

Liz Robertson

I live in New Zealand too. I agree with Janne, please come and visit. It might be a long way for many, but you won’t be disappointed in any way. I have travelled the world and now I’m older I’m seeing more of my own beautiful country and just amazed at our diverse and gorgeous scenery. There’s something for everyone here, the pace is slower than many places and even our biggest cities are smaller than most large cities in the world. Febuary/March will give you the best summer and July/August will give you a mild winter in most place, except for our winter wonderland Skiing areas.

Your planned guided tour provides a trip itinerary that may include a popular destination such as the Bay of Islands, Auckland , Waiheke island, Waitomo caves, Rotorua , Wellington , Christchurch, Queenstown, fox glacier and a view of the highest peak Aoraki Mt Cook. At Odyssey our New Zealand tours for seniors plan to include some of these places but also to offer a guided tour that heads often on a day tour to where New Zealanders live or take a trip to, such the Coro mandel peninsula, Hawke’s bay, the Wairarapa, Abel Tasman National park or any National park for a hike, Oamaru, and Invercargill for example and even Stewart Island. We think this is a collection of New Zealand tours for seniors that appeal to to couples and single travellers, whether you are seeking a tour of both islands or one of our New Zealand walking tours seniors paced.

Maori arrived from Polynesia in the 10th century on these uninhabited islands. Today, the embracing welcoming culture of New Zealand encountered on a trip is distinctly Maori culture, with Polynesian and British influences. Your guided tour led by an accomplished tour director has an itinerary that brings the traveller to some of the World’s great travel experiences.

Your tour guide on a North Island tour will be looking to fulfill a day tour itinerary that delivers travel experiences to the Bay of islands, Auckland , Waitomo glowworm caves, perhaps Hobbiton, Rotorua , a geothermal wonderland complete with hot springs and hub for Maori culture, the Hawkes bay including Napier and New Zealand ’s capital Wellington to capture the key places on a North island tour.

Going south the tour guide will have a scenery led itinerary for a groups escorted tours to New Zealand tour including the South Island. With 20% of the population, South island New Zealand tours offers a different set of travel experiences on your journey compared to the North Island.

The South Island New Zealand tours are visually dominated by the Southern Alps, that run the length of the South Island. The National park (s) in the South Island such as Abel Tasman and Fiordland have some of the World’s great walking tracks such as the Milford track or Routeburn. In addition to exploring the Southern Alps and looking for Mount Cookyour itinerary may include day tour experiences led by your tour guide to Milford Sound which sits within Fiordland National Park, part of UNESCO World Heritage site Te Wāhipounamu. Te Anau , Queenstown , or to the West coast glacier, Franz Josef Glacier or small towns on the west coast such as Hokitika . On the rugged coastline of the west coast after Franz Josef Glacier you can stop at Lake Matheson for the perfect refelection on a clear day of Mount Cook in the lake. On the East coast is Christchurch the main city in South Island and is often the start or finish of the South Island New Zealand tours.

Walk in the Wild.

There are just 5.0 million New Zealanders, scattered across 268,021 sq. km: bigger than the UK with one-fourteenth of the population. Filling in the gaps are the sublime forests, mountains, lakes, beaches and fiords that have made NZ one of the best hike (locals call it ‘tramping’) destinations on the planet. Tackle one of the epic ‘Great Walks’ – you might’ve heard of the Heaphy and Milford Tracks – or the Tongariro crossing located in the centre of New Zealand’s North island, spend a few hours wandering along a beautiful beach, paddling a canoe or cycling through some easily accessible wilderness. Odyssey offers New Zealand walking tours seniors paced that maybe a full on walking tour for the day or a guided walk consisting of a couple of short walk escorted tour. The pace and duration varies to reflect the overall group fitness level.

Māori Culture

New Zealand’s all-conquering All Blacks would never have become back-to-back rugby world champions without their unstoppable Māori players. But this is just one example of how Maori culture impresses itself on contemporary Kiwi life: across NZ you can hear Maori language, watch Māori TV, join in a hāngi (Māori feast) or catch a cultural performance with song, dance and a blood-curdling haka (war dance). Māori design continues to find expression in tā moko, Māori tattooing (often applied to the face) and the delicate artistry of bone, shell and pounamu (greenstone) sculpture. Maori culture has enjoyed a growing awareness for some decades.

It is safe to explore and enjoy.

New Zealand isn’t a place where you encounter many on-the-road frustrations: buses and trains generally run on time; main roads are in good care; ATMs proliferate; pickpockets, scam merchants and bedbug-ridden hotels are few and far between. And there are no snakes, and only one poisonous spider – the endangered katipo. This decent nation is a place where you can relax and enjoy (rather than endure) your travels. Odyssey’s New Zealand tours packages seek to reflect the relaxed charm that prevails in a New Zealand trip.

Food, Wine & Beer

British-influenced classics like fish and chips aren’t going anywhere, but NZ gastronomy has come a long way. Chefs and the restaurants and cafes they work in across the country whether in Auckland, Wellington, Napier, Christchurch or Queenstown borrow influences from as far afield as South Pacific islands and Europe for creative takes on locally sourced lamb and seafood like abalone, oysters and scallops. Meanwhile, the vegetarian and vegan food scenes grow evermore prominent and inventive. Wash it all down with coffee culture, an edgy craft-beer scene and legendary cool-climate wines (like sublime sauvignon blanc and pinot noir).

New Zealand Travel guide

What are the can’t miss sights in new zealand.

Both the New Zealand’s North Island and New Zealand’s South Island are full of spectacular scenery , can’t miss sights, we would suggest though;

  • Auckland ; City of sails
  • The Bay of islands; early history of NZ
  • The Hawke’s bay; find your wine
  • Tongariro National Park; UNESCO site
  • Abel Tasman National Park
  • The Franz Josef Glacier
  • Milford sound UNESCO site

Cities and towns are rich in history, with interesting, unique attractions and museums, lovely cafes and restaurants with helpful and friendly locals. And on top of that we all know mother nature in New Zealand is just as important, that is why visiting the national park (s), mountains, lakes, forests, beaches, and bays for there stunning scenery are on the bucket lists as well. Odyssey has coach tours of New Zealand for seniors to enjoy as an inspiring journey for a holiday .

Most tours of New Zealand start or finish in Auckland . The City of Sails, famous for its two harbours, Manukau and the Hauraki gulf, the nearby islands and the volcanic activity that formed the area’s topography is the most populous city of New Zealand and a buzzing multicultural hub driving the country’s economy. Auckland ‘s inner city beaches are beautiful bays to explore or take the ferry to Waiheke island , whilst on the west coast is the wild beach of Piha.

Further north the Bay of Islands is a sub-tropical region, known for the Winterless North. The region encompasses 144 islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula. You can visit the lovely towns of Paihia, Russel and Kerikeri, stand on the Waitangi Treaty Grounds or take a day trip to Cape Reinga, the northernmost point of New Zealand.

On the east coast of the North Island wine lovers should definitely pay a visit to Hawke’s Bay. Nicknamed as Wine Country, Hawke’s Bay is the first stop of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail offering 30+ cellars and some 200 kilometres of easy biking trails connecting them. It is also known as New Zealand’s Art Deco capital with cities such as Napier. Lovers of a good hike should have the Te Mata peak as a day tour on their itinerary.

Still on the North Island, the Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park of the country and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The park encompasses several volcanic mountains, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro, sacred Maori places and the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, regard as one of the greatest one-day hikes in the world.

For the South Island travelling down the wild west coast is an absolute must, the spectacular scenery on this rugged coastline of New Zealand’s south island is a must see.

You can start with the Abel Tasman National Park (named after the 17 th century Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who was the first European to reach New Zealand), the smallest national park of the country. It is an easily accessible coastal paradise, dramatic scenery, with plenty of options to explore the sand beaches and hiking tracks. Kayaking one way and taking a hike back is one of the most popular choice by visitors.

Travelling further south, the little town of Franz Josef (named after the then emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) is the ideal base to explore the west coast glacier, Franz Josef Glacier and/or the Fox Glacier . Unfortunately as the glacier retreat they are becoming less and less accessible on foot but you can still take a scenic flight over the landscape, or be more adventurous and get dropped on Franz Josef glacier with a professional guide for a unique hike back.

Queenstown is often called the adventure capital of the world. The town is located on the lakeshore of Lake Wakatipu with the spectacular scenery of the Remarkables in the background. It is a great base to explore the Central Otago wine region, nearby historic towns such as Arrowtown, and of course a Milford Sound cruise , the key highlight of the Fjordland National Park.

Milford Sound is located in the UNESCO World Heritage site Fiordland National Park, approximately 4 hours from Queenstown and 2 hours from T e Anau , the nearest inhabited town. At Milford sound the Southern Alps finally collapse into the Tasman Sea, creating a dramatic and beautiful scenery, best enjoyed on a milford sound cruise .

What are the best ways to see New Zealand?

The easiest way to get around in New Zealand is using your own vehicle, providing access even to the most remote areas of the country.

On our small group tours of New Zealand for seniors we use coaches and occasionally local transport such as buses within a city or ferry services.

Even though New Zealand is a huge country with low population density, long-distance buses are widely available among bigger cities and popular tourist destinations. Train services are more limited but where available, it is definitely a scenic way of getting around. Such example is the Tranzalpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. And if you are in a hurry, you can always use domestic flights to hop around key destinations.

What are some good unknown places to visit New Zealand?

Driving around yourself also has the advantage of giving you the opportunity to wonder off the beaten track anywhere in the country. While the places listed below are not exactly unknown, they are certainly less exposed to tourists.

Waikawau beach tunnel

Waikawau is a small community in the Waitomo district of the North Island. It has the only publicly accessible beach between Marokopa and Awakino via a tunnel which was completed in 1911 by local farmers. The tunnel was originally built by three local farmers to drive their cattle on the beach to the nearby station rather than the rough terrain.

Mine bay Maori rock carvings

This giant carving of Ngatoroirangi is considered to be one of the best contemporary Maori artworks. Master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell was asked by his grandmother to carve the tattooed face of their ancestor to create a connection of the family to the land. In 1976 the young carver had a vision while paddling on the water, and it took him 4 summers to complete this extraordinary piece of art. The carvings are towering 14 metres above Lake Taupo on the North Island and displaying the traditional Maori knowledge and skills passed down by each generation. This icon of the region can only be reached by boat, and can be best viewed from a kayak.

Pancake rocks

Punakaiki is a small village located between Westport and Greymouth on the west coast of the South Island . And just outside of the main village you will find the amazing pancake rocks and blowholes, the curious limestone formations which are over 30 million years in the making. You can see the rocks during an easy, accessible walk. It is recommended to wear something you don’t mind getting wet, as during the high tide, the Tasman sea forces large amounts of water and compressed air to race upward creating geyser like ‘eruptions’ across the holes and pools.

Stop here while navigating through the scenic Haast Pass which brings you from the West Coast through the dramatic scenery of the Southern alps on your coach tour to Wanaka on the South Island . Near the small village of Makarora you can take an easy walk to the beautiful turquoise waters of the Blue Pools, which colour is the result of light refraction on the clear and icy cold water. Blue Pools is where Blue River joins the Makarora River, and after checking it is safe to do so, you can take a leap into the pools from the two suspension bridges. Makarora is also a starting point for several hikes in the Mount Aspiring National Park.

This one is not easy to reach but well worth the effort. Lake Quill is on the South Island in Fiordland National Park, near Milford Sound. The lake is fed by several glaciers and falls under in three cascades as Sutherland Falls, which was long thought to be the tallest waterfall of New Zealand at 580 meters. The falls can be seen from Milford Track, the popular multi-day hike, or you can take a scenic flight over the national park to enjoy the untouched beauty of the lake.

What to see on the North Island of New Zealand?

While the South Island gets most of the attention thanks to Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound , Queenstown, Christchurch and more, the North Island has just as much to offer. You can learn about the volcanic and geothermal activity of the island and the Maori culture . Destinations worth a visit are the beautiful Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga up north with the Waitangi treaty grounds, Auckland and its volcanic islands, such as Waiheke Island and Rangitoto Island, Rotorua , Tongariro , the Waitomo glowworm caves, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington .

Some of the main cities of the North Island are Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, Rotorua, Hastings and Gisborne.

How Maui fished up the North Island?

Maui is a very important demigod in the Maori mythology. One day he overheard his four brothers that they wanted to leave him behind while going fishing. Maui made a fishhook from a magical ancestral jawbone and hid in the brothers’ canoe. When they were far out on the sea, Maui revealed himself, and threw the magical fishhook in the sea while chanting powerful incantations. The hook caught fast, and with the help of his brothers Maui brought the fish to the surface. He then begged them to wait until he had appeased to Tangaroa, the god of the sea, but the brothers did not listen and started to carve out pieces for themselves, forming the many mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers and coastlines of the island.

Crossing from the North Island to the South Island

If you want to cross from the North to the South Island, you either have to fly or take the ferry across the Cook Strait. The Interislander ferry operates between Wellington and Picton since 1962, and it takes about 3-3.5 hours to complete the crossing. The ferry route is one of the great journeys of New Zealand. On your journey, marvel at the beauty of Marlborough Sounds, the north coast of the South Island, which is made up of 1500 kilometres of sunken river valleys.

Which one is bigger, the North or the South Island?

The population of New Zealand is around 4.9 million people, and according to the latest census, 76% lives on the North Island, equalling about 3.7 million people, while the South Island accounts for 23%, and the rest of the 600 islands for 1%. This means the North Island is the smaller but more populous island between the two main islands.

Initially Pakeha (European New Zealanders) settled on the South Island, and it wasn’t until 1911 that the population of the North Island overtook the South Island (56% vs 44%). The drift north still continues, with Auckland, the biggest economic hub of the country being the main driver of the change.

Best time to tour New Zealand

What are the best times of year to visit new zealand.

The answer really depends on your preferences – what do you want to see and do, would you like to avoid peak season, etc.

Summer in New Zealand is from December to February and has the best overall weather, and all outdoor activities (such as world-famous multi day hikes, flights, water sports, etc) are operating. Yet, New Zealand is also famous for having four seasons in one day, so make sure you’re well prepared with layered clothing even during the hottest days. This is also the peak season for both domestic and international tourism, so you have to book in advance to avoid the disappointment of missing out on anything.

Fall is from March to May, and it is the time for spectacular colours , New Zealand’s south island especially around Wanaka and the Otago region is any time after Easter is usually the most quiet time of the year to travel so you can enjoy most of the attractions in peace in fairly good weather. This is a good season to enjoy a New Zealand walking tours seniors itinerary from Odyssey.

Winter is from June to August and it’s time for winter sport season. Luckily the temperatures only get cold in the mountains, and in general you can enjoy many days with clear skies. Ski season runs from June until early October in the South island, for those who have Southern Hemisphere skiing on their bucket list. Some of the tracks to hike are closed for security reasons. On the positive side, there is very little traffic on the roads and only the heaviest snow falling would result in a few days of snow in the lowlands, which is rare.

Spring is from September to November, and many say you get the best of all words if you visit during that time. Mountains look majestic with their snowcaps on, you can catch the last weeks of the ski season, while this is the wildest season for any water sport, especially rafting as the melting snow speeds up the rivers and falls. This is also the time for garden lowers as flowers and leaves are blossoming across the country.

How does time of the year affect the weather and travel conditions in New Zealand?

In general the weather in New Zealand is fairly mild all year around with many hours of sunshine due to the proximity of the mountains and sea across all islands. The far north is considered subtropical (earning the nickname of ‘Winterless North’), while the inland alpine areas of the South Island can get as cold as -10 degrees Celsius in winter.

You should be aware that torrential rain falls can cause floods and result in roads closures especially on the South Island among the ranges of the Southern Alps all year round.

Due to the temperature difference of the mountains and valleys, some mornings will be foggy but it can clear very quickly. In general weather conditions can change in a minute across the country, so always be cautious, adhere to rules and be up to date with travel information.

In general roads are in great condition and maintained regularly. The biggest threat is probably self-driving international travellers who might be unfamiliar with driving on the right hand side, so you might want to avoid the peak season because of them.

In general the weather in New Zealand is fairly mild all year around with many hours of sunshine due to the proximity of the mountains and sea across both the North Island and South Island. The far north is considered subtropical (earning the nickname of ‘Winterless North’), while the inland alpine areas of the South Island can get as cold as -10 degrees Celsius in winter.

What factors should you consider when picking a time of year to visit New Zealand?

Main factors are your own preferences for activities, weather conditions (see above), number of other visitors and pricing. Since the country offers a lot to visitors all year around, prices tend to be stable with no off season drops. Interislander ferries, bus services and domestic flights operate all year round.

1.Check off some amazing bucket list attractions

One thing we’ve learnt from operating tours for senior travellers is that those iconic, once-in-a-lifetime spots and experiences are what people want. New Zealand is the perfect place for this an amazing island nation – it’s hard to believe that so many jaw-dropping landscapes can be crammed into such a small country.

Here are the places guests on our tours (senior travellers in their 50s & 60s) tell us they love so much:

  • Bay of Islands: When you gaze out at the peaceful islands and turquoise waters of the Bay of Islands, you’ll see why they are one of the most popular tourist draws in New Zealand.
  • Abel Tasman National Park: Named after the first European explorer to New Zealand, this is the only easily accessible coastal national park in the country and it offers plenty of fantastic hiking opportunities.
  • Mount Cook National Park: Enormous ancient glaciers, craggy peaks that scrape the impossibly blue sky, hiking trails through an ancient temperate rainforest with twisting trees and thick ferns – Mount Cook National Park will delight.
  • Milford Sound: Seeing Milford Sound for the first time will take your breath away. It’s featured on almost every tourism brochure and video for the South Island and it’s pretty obvious why. There’s nothing like cruising slowly on a boat through these sheer cliff faces with waterfalls cascading down them.
  • Rotorua: The steaming geysers and geothermal hot springs of Rotorua have been attracting visitors for over 100 years. It’s also a great place to attend a traditional Maori feast and get to know more about their unique culture.
  • Queenstown: With towering mountains and the blue waters of Lake Wakatipu all around it, Queenstown is a fun city with an unbelievably beautiful setting.

These are just a few of the amazing destinations that you will discover on your travels around New Zealand. The great thing about this country is that it is so small and everything is close together, so you’ll be able to see many different attractions all in one trip.

Senior travellers exploring the Tasman Glacier in Mt Cook

We know exactly how important it is to have comfortable accommodations to return to at the end of a long and exciting day exploring New Zealand.

The good news is that you don’t have to worry about staying anywhere sub-par – we use 4-star accommodation wherever possible. We have handpicked all of the places where we stay, choosing them for their comfort, location, amenities and style.

For example, in Auckland you’ll stay in the Nesuto Hotel right in the city centre. It’s a prime spot that is only a short stroll from the downtown shopping district, the waterfront and some of the best restaurants in the city.

Another example is the stunning five star Bolton Hotel in Wellington. Right in the centre of town within walking distance of all the craft breweries and restaurants with friendly five star service 24 hours a day.

See more about the accommodation on our tours here.

3. The food and wine is divine

Yes, the scenery is gorgeous and the culture is fascinating… but you are probably also thinking about the food and wine you will be able to enjoy. After all, that’s one of the best parts of travel – the opportunity to taste scrumptious local delicacies.

New Zealand’s cuisine takes its inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Asia, Polynesia and Europe. Since this is an island nation with a primarily agricultural economy, many of the dishes are based on fresh produce from the land and sea.

Then, there’s the wine. The wine culture in New Zealand only dates back to the mid 1800s, but Kiwi wine is getting lots of praise from around the world.

There are 10 different wine making areas in New Zealand, with Marlborough famous for the sauvignon blanc, Central Otago and Martinborough for the pinot noir and pinot gris and Gisborne known for chardonnay.

Plus, there’s the wonderful way that New Zealanders eat. Meals are laid back, relaxed and involve plenty of laughter and conversation, completely in keeping with the chilled out Kiwi psyche.

Here are our favourite New Zealand food and wine experiences

  • Take the opportunity to try the food cooked at a Hangi – a traditional Maori feast. The meat, potatoes, pumpkin and other veggies are cooked in a hole in the ground atop hot rocks for several hours.
  • Be sure to try some New Zealand lamb. Although this meat is eaten all over the world, you won’t find it better or fresher than in NZ. Most restaurants in New Zealand will have wonderful lamb options, including steaks, lamb chops, lamb burgers and much more.
  • Barbeques are a huge part of the New Zealand culture – especially on the long warm summer days that are perfect for eating outdoors.
  • Tuatua, an indigenous New Zealand shellfish that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the world. The meat within the shell has a delectable soft, creamy texture and mild flavour.
  • Mince and cheese pie – a fluffy, flaky pastry with warm gooey cheese, beef mince and gravy inside. Heavenly! A heads up if you’re coming from North America, pies in New Zealand are usually savoury, not sweet!
  • Be sure to try some Hokey Pokey ice cream – it really is what it’s all about. It’s a yummy combination of creamy vanilla ice cream with honeycomb balls.

Getting hungry? Find out more about our food and wine experiences on our tours here.

One of the things that many people love about our tours is the flexibility to do different things in different places – we have set up the tour so that you can take advantage of the many exciting experiences on offer. Plus, we make it easy by organising everything, confirming all bookings in advance and making sure you know everything you need to know.

You may feel like paddling a kayak around the spectacular coastline, going on a Lord of the Rings Tour , riding on the thrilling Dart River Jet or taking a tour of the local wineries.

5. New Zealand is safe and friendly

New Zealand is very friendly and welcoming towards seniors travellers and the elderly who make what is often a long journey to get here.

Traveling outside of your comfort zone can be a little bit scary but New Zealand is one of the safest countries in the world to travel to. Did you know that according to the 2023 Global Peace Index New Zealand in the 4th safest country in the world?

When you’re here you’ll notice right away that Kiwis are quite relaxed and laid back – perhaps because we don’t have much to worry about. Here down at the bottom of the world we’re lucky enough not to have the same worries as the rest of the world, we have very little crime and most of the time we just want to go for a hike and then sit in the sunshine and drink a cold beer.

Plus, you’ll be happy to know that the water is safe to drink, the restaurants have high cleanliness standards and there is a very high standard of public health.

We have put together a guide to safety in New Zealand , which you should take a moment to read before your trip. However, as long as you are aware of your surroundings and you take common sense precautions, you should not run into any dangers while travelling around New Zealand. The biggest risk is not wanting to go home!

Travelling on a seniors' tour

Travelling by rail, self drive travel.

For some great travel tips from the best Baby Boomer travellers in the business, take a look at the My Itchy Travel Feet blog.

One question for your New Zealand trip – Drive yourself or join a tour?

Because there’s so much awesome countryside inland away from the ocean and our rail network is not very extensive, most people opt for either driving themselves around or jumping on some kind of tour.

Yes, it’s true that you could rent a car and drive around New Zealand on your own. While this can be a lot of fun, there are also some disadvantages.

First of all – you’ll have to worry about the road rules and navigating New Zealand’s twisty roads, which might make your journey more stressful. Secondly, depending on where you are from you might have to drive on the other side of the road – which can be very disconcerting!

Plus, if you have to worry about driving then you won’t be able to indulge in delicious New Zealand wine from the wonderful vineyards that you visit. On our small group coach tours you will be able to enjoy a tasty tipple or two and relax.

Still not sure if driving yourself or joining a tour is right for you? Here’s a quick exercise.

Say you’ve got three weeks in New Zealand, take a look at this 21 day New Zealand itinerary and first imagine yourself driving and navigating yourself and then imagine yourself on the same trip with a small group of people from all over the world visiting all the same places but being driven by someone who knows the roads and heaps more handy info as well.

Which sounds like your idea of a great holiday? There’s your answer.

7. New Zealand tour guides are the best in the world

When you travelling overseas in your 50s, 60s or 70s, your priorities and the style of are a little different than when you travelled in your 20s or 30s. Your desire for learning about the places you visit may be higher and you may appreciate having someone at hand to help you find somewhere special or be there if anything goes wrong.

That’s the advantage of travelling on a guided tour and in fact, many of our guests tell us the best thing about their whole tour was the guide.

There are things that locals will know that are much harder for you as a visitor to find out.

If you have a burning interest in a particular New Zealand topic or there’s some little out of the way place you’d love to find, a good tour guide can help you unearth that gem or shine light on your favourite topic.

And in the event of anything unexpected happening, having a tour guide and the backing of a locally based tour operator will be a real reassurance.

As well as someone who will take care of all the driving, checking in to accommodation and activity bookings, your guide becomes your go to person for information and helping with those little extras which make a trip so special.

All our tours are fully guided and our guide team is the most experienced and passionate in New Zealand.

Meet the MoaTrek Kiwi Guide team here.

8. What about solo senior travellers or families?

If you are travelling on your own, joining a tour is a great option. The travel experience on MoaTrek tours is never lonely.

With our friendly small groups you will get a chance to make new friends with other adventurous, curious travellers just like you. It’s a fun and safe way for any solo traveller to venture out and see what New Zealand has to offer.

Read our blogpost all about solo travel to New Zealand.

Most of our guests are solo travellers or couples, but we’re seeing families joining our tours and they all seem to have a wonderful time. Our trips aren’t designed for young children, but adult children and their parents, definitely yes.

9. Travel insurance for New Zealand is accessible

Although travel insurance is important at any age, it’s essential for older travellers who may have more medical needs.

There’s nothing worse than needing insurance and not having it, so make sure that you are covered before you go. A good comprehensive travel insurance policy will cover you for travel interruption, illness, loss of baggage and cash.

The good news is that New Zealand is considered by insurance companies as one of the safest destinations in the world with an excellent medical system so you’re not going to encounter any extra barriers to getting insurance cover for your trip.

The best travel insurance policies will also cover you for pre-existing medical conditions too, so that shouldn’t be a barrier to overseas travel. Just make sure you declare if fully and understand what is and isn’t covered.

Also, it will cover your expenses due to sickness, delays or accidents beyond your control. Travel insurance is so important – don’t leave your home country without it! It’s a very small price to pay for the peace of mind that it offers.

New Zealand has a great healthcare system. The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) will pay for medical costs and care if you have an accident – even if you are not a New Zealand citizen. However, the ACC won’t cover delayed flights, theft or other things that could go wrong on the road.

Read more about travel insurance and medical cover for travel to New Zealand here.

10. Don’t forget those sweet senior discounts

Your golden years are a great time to travel, because you’ll be able to take advantage of those great senior discounts, even if you’re visiting New Zealand from overseas.

When you are over a certain age, lots of travel expenses become cheaper including airline tickets, activities, hotels and more. Plus, you can use your senior ID card and enjoy discounts at a lot of attractions and restaurants, even if you are not from New Zealand!

MoaTrek started in 1971, so that makes us seniors too!

When we started running our tours in the early 1970s they were all about parties and late nights and now we still like a good night out with fun people, just a different style.

See how MoaTrek looked in the 1970s here on one of our original videos.

Back then our goal was to create vibrant, fun and exciting tours of New Zealand. Roll forward to today and it’s still the same, we’ve just graduated from tents to 4-star hotels and campfire cook-ups to premium food and wine.

MoaTrek – New Zealand’s leading small group tour operator

The wonderful thing about our tours here at MoaTrek are that they are designed especially for your needs – so that you can enjoy the ease of being on an organised tour while also enjoying the finer experiences of travelling with a group of people just like you.

Our New Zealand Tours allow you to see the best that New Zealand has to offer. We make getting around easier, so that you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Most of the guests on our tours are in their 50s and 60s and quite a few over 70.

We enjoy the classy, curious and cultured side of New Zealand travel and embrace the natural beauty, culture and cuisine of this country.

Senior travellers have the most fun!

Remember, you don’t have to stop traveling just because you are getting older. In fact, travelling in your 50s, 60s or 70s means that you can have a deep, meaningful travel experience – your lifetime of knowledge will allow you to fully appreciate the new experiences you are having.

Without having to think about going back to work after the trip and in many cases, having a little more money to spend on travel than when we were younger, means it’s a great time to enjoy travel.

Senior travel in New Zealand can be an amazing adventure – a chance to explore this beautiful country with just the right blend of comfort and excitement.

We also know that it can pay to have someone helping you organize your trip, take care of all the driving and be there if anything goes wrong. That’s our job!

What does senior travel in New Zealand look like?

If you’d like to see exactly what senior travel in New Zealand looks like, take a look at the following from Susan Mills, a 50+ traveller from Australia. Susan left the family at home for two weeks and joined one of our small group tours.

She wrote a diary, took lots of photos and even sat down for an interview after the trip.

New Zealand tours for seniors

Looking at Mount Cook on tour, small group New Zealand

You are never too old to travel New Zealand. Unleash your inner traveller with our amazing New Zealand tours for seniors.

We’ll depart Queenstown early to drive over the Lindis Pass and through the Mackenzie Country, past the vivid blue waters of Lake Pukaki on the way to our amazing stop at the base of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mt Cook. We’ve made this drive sound great but honestly - we reckon it’s one of the most stunning days you’ll have in the whole of NZ. We arrive in the early afternoon with time to do an optional experience like a boat tour on a glacial lake surrounded by snow capped alps (sounds epic? It is.) Alternatively we can check out the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre or do one of the many great short walks in the park. We would be remiss if we didn’t recommend the Hooker Valley track (weather dependent) which in our opinion is in the top 3 day walks in NZ. If it’s a clear night, head outside to experience one of the best stargazing spots in the country.

New Zealand for Seniors

Roy Orbison wasn’t thinking about New Zealand seniors’ tours when he wrote “You Got It” but he could just as well have been because New Zealand really does have everything.

The relatively compact size of the country, ease of getting around, variety of landscapes and experiences, and laid-back approach to life make New Zealand an extremely popular choice for seniors.

Whether you’re in to food, wine, golf, beaches, horticulture, bird-watching, walking, railways, cruises, culture or history, with more variety than almost any other country, you’ll find what you’re looking for in New Zealand. In fact, “anything you want, anything at all, you got it!”

Whether you’re making a trip to celebrate a retirement, a 60 th or 70 th birthday, or simply because you’ve always wanted to, New Zealand is an incredible destination.

Here at Silver Fern Holidays we have some wonderful options for senior travel in New Zealand in the form of escorted tours. Of course, we mean ‘senior’ in the most modern sense; us older generations are younger than ever and just because we’re no longer in our youth, it doesn’t mean we don’t still yearn to travel and see the world. So let us explain how we can make your dream come true.

Our friendly driver-guides and local guides are there to show you the best of New Zealand and make sure you have the best time doing it. Taking a more informal approach than your typical ‘coach tours’, you’ll find they are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about their country and have the highest standards of safety and professionalism. And they’ll share plenty of laughs along the way too.

A smaller cohort means you still get to visit all of the sights, but in a more personal, tailored, fashion and we keep the itinerary flexible, so you have much more of an input into your trip. A unique blend of tour and tailor-made itinerary with a superb selection of accommodation along the way, our Small Group Tours are the most versatile coach tours for seniors New Zealand has to offer.

I have some dietary requirements?

Please just let us know in advance and we will sort everything for you. Chefs are used to all sorts now when it comes to diet so as long as we know - we’ll have you covered.

We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. It just puts your mind at ease. Remember to make sure you are covered for and loss of personal possessions, sickness, accidents or travel delays. Feel free to ask us for any tips to make this quick and easy for you.

Can you collect me from my door?

Yes, it would be our pleasure. We can arrange for you to be picked up and returned to your front door at the conclusion of any tour.

What makes new zealand ideal for senior travellers.

New Zealand is an unbeatable destination for senior travellers, offering a blend of comfort, accessibility, and enriching experiences that cater to all levels of activity. Here’s why this beautiful country is perfect for travellers over 50.

Scenic beauty

Whether you're parked up near a quiet lake, taking in the sweeping mountain views, or watching waves crash along the coastline, the scenery in New Zealand is breathtaking. With many campervan sites in New Zealand located in prime spots, it’s easy to find yourself immersed in the beauty of the natural world. And if you’re keen on birdwatching , you’ll be spoilt for choice with native species like the tūī, fantails, and kererū often spotted in the bush. Even a simple drive through the countryside offers views of everything from rolling farmlands to snow-capped peaks. It’s all about soaking up the peaceful atmosphere and letting nature come to you.

Great accessibility

New Zealand is an ideal destination for a motorhome road trip, thanks to its well-maintained roads and abundance of convenient stops. Whether you’re cruising through scenic landscapes or exploring small towns, you’ll never be far from a campervan parking spot where you can easily pull over to take a break. Most campsites are equipped with excellent facilities, including clean restrooms and communal kitchens making your journey as comfortable as possible.

Unique cultural experiences

New Zealand offers lots of unique cultural experiences that don’t require high levels of physical activity. Travellers can immerse themselves in the rich history and traditions of Māori culture, visiting marae (meeting grounds), experiencing traditional performances, or learning about indigenous customs. Towns like Rotorua offer accessible experiences that bring New Zealand’s past and present to life, from local art galleries to Māori heritage sites. It’s a fantastic way to add depth to your New Zealand itinerary while keeping the pace relaxed.

Safe and friendly

New Zealand is known for being one of the safest countries in the world, which adds to the peace of mind for senior travellers. From the availability of reliable healthcare services to the friendly locals, you can feel secure throughout your journey. Whether you’re chatting with fellow travellers at a campervan park or enjoying a meal in a small town café, you’ll feel at home wherever you go.

Best travel seasons for over 50s

For senior travellers, the off-peak seasons of spring and autumn are ideal – offering mild weather, fewer tourists, and plenty of unforgettable scenery.

Spring (September - November)

Spring in New Zealand is a wonderful time to hit the road. The weather is mild, making it perfect for those who prefer to avoid the summer heat. You’ll find fewer crowds at popular spots, meaning you can take your time and enjoy the sights without feeling rushed. Plus, the landscapes are bursting with colour, as flowers bloom and the countryside comes to life. It’s also a great season for those interested in wildlife, as many animals are more active in the spring months. With a campervan hire, you can easily explore blooming gardens, national parks, and coastal drives at your own pace.

Autumn (March - May)

Autumn brings cooler temperatures and a beautiful change in the landscape, as the trees turn shades of red, orange, and gold. It’s a photographer’s dream and the perfect time to enjoy the crisp air and autumn foliage. The weather is pleasant enough for outdoor activities but without the crowds of summer. Many of the best campervan sites New Zealand has to offer are quieter during these months, giving you more space to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Whether you’re touring wine regions or simply taking a scenic drive, autumn offers a peaceful and picturesque experience.

Top New Zealand destinations for seniors

New Zealand offers some truly special destinations that are perfect for senior travellers. Here are just a few worth adding to your travel itinerary:

Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands , located in the far north, is a gem for senior travellers. Known for its beautiful beaches, calm waters, and rich history, this region is all about enjoying the scenery at your own pace. With 144 islands dotting the bay, it’s a fantastic place to explore by boat or from the comfort of the shore. It’s a great way to enjoy the bay without having to take on any strenuous activities. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is also worth a visit for a fascinating look at New Zealand’s history—offering easy walking paths and guided tours to make your visit stress-free.

Choosing the right campervan

It’s a good idea to take regular breaks to avoid fatigue and stretch your legs—many of New Zealand’s scenic rest areas are ideal for a quick stop.

Staying connected

Keeping in touch with family and friends while on your New Zealand road trip is easier than ever, thanks to modern technology. Many campsites and campervan parks offer Wi-Fi access, making it simple to stay connected. Welcome to New Zealand! Your adventure begins in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) with a welcome meeting tonight at 6 pm. If you arrive early, why not check out the Auckland Sky Tower – the tallest building in New Zealand. If the mood strikes, you can also jump off the Sky Tower (with a harness, of course). Maybe visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum or walk around the CBD at your own pace and pick one of the excellent spots for lunch. Tonight, you’ll head out for a welcome dinner with your group to get to know each other.

  • Hotel (1 night)

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at a local café for a dose of warm Kiwi hospitality. Then, take a scenic drive to Tutukaka, stopping at Whangarei Falls along the way. This 26 m-high waterfall is a great spot for a photo! Continue along the coastline to Matapouri Beach. With the soft sand under your feet. You can take some time to enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean. This is a perfect spot to relax, unwind and appreciate the surroundings. Arrive in Tutukaka tonight – a coastal city known for its scenic views, world-famous beaches and coastline (rated one of the top three coastlines in the world by National Geographic Traveller!).

  • Whangarei Falls - Visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

After breakfast this morning, you’ll set sail on a full-day cruise to the Poor Knights Islands. As a total Marine Reserve, the islands boast 11-million-year-old volcanic origins, featuring some pretty memorable drop-offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels both above and below the water. The rich biodiversity includes plant, animal and fish life unique to the area, so if you’re a wildlife buff this might be the highlight of your trip! Your day will be filled with sightseeing, kayaking, exploring caves, snorkelling, swimming, spotting sea mammals and learning the history of the islands. The highlight of the day is a visit to the world's largest sea cave – Rikoriko Cave, only accessible by boat. Finish your day with a scenic drive to Paihia, where you’ll spend the night.

Maybe hit the water and explore the many coves and beaches or take a cruise through the natural rock archway. Explore the ocean floor on a scuba mission or maybe set sail in search of local dolphins. A land of white sand beaches and lush rainforests, the Coromandel Peninsula feels a world away from where your journey began. Make a stop at Hot Water Beach, named after the famous warm waters found beneath its golden sand. If the tide allows, dig a hole on the beach and enjoy your own natural hot tub – absolute bliss! After a visit to the famous cathedral Cove arrive at your accommodation in the afternoon.

Please note that due to severe damage to infrastructure caused by Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 many roads on the Coromandel Peninsula are impassable. For this reason, some adjustments to your itinerary have been put in place to ensure you are still able to experience New Zealand safely. Your itinerary will be rerouted and will not visit the Coromandel, but will stay overnight in Tauranga instead. This change is in effect until further notice. Your leader will inform you of any further details regarding the daily itinerary and will keep you up to date about potential other changes that may become necessary as you travel.

Hit the road and make a scenic drive to Raglan, passing tree-clad hills and dramatic valleys. The journey will be broken up with photo-worthy stops, including a visit to the magical 55-metre cascade of the Bridal Veil Falls. Widely considered to be New Zealand’s premier surf spot, Raglan is the ideal place to catch some waves, whether you’re a beginner or a pro. If surfing isn’t your thing, the chilled-out town offers a wealth of awesome activities. Check out creative local cafes, shops and galleries, stretch out on the beach and enjoy the view or head out on a hiking trail to get a better look at the landscape. Tonight is set to be one to remember – get on the water for a sunset boat cruise around Raglan Harbour, and tuck into a tasty fish and chips feast while you’re at it – a true Kiwi experience!

This morning’s adventure takes you underground during an optional visit to the Waitomo Caves, a subterranean system of caverns and passageways illuminated by thousands of ethereal glow worms. You may like to join a walking tour to hear the story of the caves’ history, geology and connection to Maori mythology. If you’d rather stay on the surface, the Ruakuri Forest walk is a must, cutting through dense rainforest and taking in views of verdant gorges and limestone arches. Tucked into the rolling green hills of Matamata you’ll find Hobbiton, the set where part of the Lord of the Rings films were shot. On a fully guided tour of the set you will see Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and even enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Continue your journey towards Rotorua, known for its Maori heritage, hotbed of geothermal activity and distinctive sulphur smell (you’ll get used to it!). Say goodbye to Rotorua and get on the road once more, heading to Taupo. Stop at the thundering Huka Falls during the drive before arriving in Taupo, set on the shores of the mighty Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake. We’ll spend two nights here, the perfect base to explore Taupo and Tongariro National Park.

A volcanic eruption 70,000 years ago created the magnificent Lake Taupo, which now hosts visitors from around New Zealand and the world, keen to both relax and get their blood pumping with the adventure sports and hikes on offer. With a free day here, you’ll have plenty to choose from. If you’re a keen hiker, you may like to complete the Tongariro Crossing, New Zealand’s most famous day hike. At 19.4km long, the path takes you around a volcano, past lakes, craters and bush. A variety of guided or unguided options are available, but a good level of fitness and appropriate gear for all types of weather are a must for anyone considering tackling the crossing today. There are shorter hikes in the park available or, for the thrill seekers, you might like to go skydiving or bungy jumping.

  • Tongariro National Park - Tongariro Crossing (Unguided, Transport to/from Trail Head only) - from - NZD399

Today's hike on the Tongariro Crossing is optional, and a number of guided or unguided walks are available to be booked. If you choose to tackle the hike without a guide you can book a transfer to and from the trail head at an additional cost.

Wellington is calling – leave Taupo behind and drive on to New Zealand’s trendy and attractive capital city. Strung between staggering green hills and a delightful harbour, Wellington holds onto a small-town charm despite its capital status. The city is known for its creative and artistic endeavours, making it a real joy to explore. Arrive in the afternoon, your leader will give you a brief introduction to the city before you are free to explore as you wish. You may like to head up Mt Victoria for a view that will help you appreciate Wellington in all its glory. The rest of the evening is yours to explore the capital. With a booming food scene, be sure to ask your leader for some wonderful restaurant recommendations.

Today is all about getting to know windy Wellington, a charming place even on its most blustery days! Kick the day off with an orientation tour with your leader, checking out the bays, central Wellington, the Botanic Gardens and the Parliament Buildings. Next up it's a visit to Zealandia, a groundbreaking conservation project that has successfully reintroduced over 20 species of native wildlife into this area, some of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years. Pay a visit to Weta Workshop, the special effects studio used by Peter Jackson for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. While here you’ll have the chance to take an optional tour around the studio to find out how the team here create film magic. This afternoon, you may like to check out Wellington’s most famous cultural attraction, Te Papa Museum. Displaying an intriguing combination of New Zealand’s history and cultural heritage woven with cutting edge technology and interactive displays, there’s something here to entertain everyone. Say goodbye to the North Island and cross the Cook Strait on board a ferry, taking in some pretty unforgettable views along the way. Your introduction to New Zealand’s South Island sets the tone for the rest of the journey – pass through the iconic landscapes of the Marlborough Sounds as you cruise into Picton Harbour. Aside from its marvellous scenery, the Marlborough region is known for its production of world-class white wine, so what better way to get a taste of the South Island than by visiting some of its best wineries? Stop by and sample their goods while learning what makes Marlborough wine so renowned. Continue your journey south, eventually arriving in Kaikoura where you will stop for the night. This seaside town is known for its abundance of marine wildlife. This evening perhaps head out for a crayfish dinner – it’s a real specialty here!

Embrace a free morning to enjoy all Kaikoura has to offer. Kaikoura is famously one of the world’s top spots for whale watching, so perhaps take advantage of your time here and head out on a boat trip in search of humpbacks, orcas and sperm whales. Regroup and check out a colony of native fur seals, then depart Kaikoura and travel down to Christchurch, the South Island’s biggest city. Perhaps head out for dinner, or rest up for an exciting day ahead tomorrow. A meeting will take place at your hotel tomorrow morning to welcome any travellers joining you for the next leg of your journey.

As this is a combination trip, the travellers in your group and your group leader are likely to change today.

Christchurch is not just a pretty city – it’s also remarkably resilient. After a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the downtown area in 2011, the city has begun to rebuild in innovative and creative ways. Head out with your leader this morning to see this for yourself. Stop by the Christchurch Cathedral, which stood as a symbol of the city before collapsing in the earthquake, and has now been replaced with an architecturally striking and quake-proof structure made out of cardboard. After a morning of exploring, say goodbye to Christchurch and drive inland to Lake Tekapo. An eye-catching combination of purple lupins, turquoise waters and snow-dusted peaks makes this one of the most photo-worthy spots in the country. The Church of the Good Shepherd sits on the shores of the lakes and attracts couples from all over the world shooting their wedding pictures. It’s easy to see why – backdrops don’t get much better than this! Continue to Lake Ohau where you’ll spend the night.

  • Lake Tekapo - Mt John Lookout

Hit the road this morning for a journey to remember – watch out the window as you pass the sprawling grasslands of the Mackenzie Basin and showstopping peaks of the Southern Alps. Your drive will be broken up with plenty of scenic stops, including a visit to Kawarau Gorge, a popular spot for bungy jumping. If you’re feeling adventurous, get involved and jump off the suspension bridge crossing the gorge, or just stand back and watch brave jumpers take the plunge. Continue on to Queenstown, known as the adventure capital of the world, and rightfully so! Aside from its high-adrenaline attractions, Queenstown has a booming culinary scene, produces some of the world's best wine and boasts unbelievable scenery at every turn.

  • Queenstown - Walter Peak Lake Cruise with Gourmet Dinner - NZD189

The day is all yours to discover the varied delights of Queenstown. There are loads of options to get your heartrate up, whether you fancy shooting down the river on a jet boat, river kayaking, flying above the town in a gondola or a 4WD adventure through landscapes of Lord of the Rings fame. If you’d like to take things a little slower, perhaps head to the Gibbston Valley to taste wines only topped by the inspiring scenery. Take the chance this morning to cross off any Queenstown activities you didn’t have time for yesterday – be sure to speak to your leader for tips on the best way to spend a morning here. In the afternoon, get back on the road for a seriously scenic 1-hour drive to Wanaka through the Crown Range Mountains. Stop off along the way in Arrowtown, a little goldrush town with big personality. Take a walk along the tree-lined high street where historic buildings nod to the town’s glory days. Arrive in Wanaka in the afternoon and embrace the vibe of this laidback and beautiful town. With Lake Wanaka as its glittering centrepiece and dramatic mountains as its backdrop, the town is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s most bewitching. This afternoon you may like to head out on a hike or just stretch out on the shores of the lake and take it all in.

Visit the beautiful Mou Waho Island today. Accessible only by boat from Wanaka and famous for being home to an (unnamed) island, in a lake (Arethusa Pool), on an island (Mou Waho), in a lake (Lake Wanaka), on an island (the South Island) in the ocean (the Pacific). Sounds complicated, but once you are there it will all make sense! Enjoy a walk through this fascinating scenery and learn more about this predator-free reserve with a natural glacial-formed lake at its summit. Your afternoon is free to explore Wanaka and surrounds. No visit to Wanaka would be complete without seeing #thatwanakatree. Springing up from the waters of Lake Wanaka, this sloping willow is one of the most photographed trees in the world. There's no shortage of excellent hiking routes in the region if you'd like to get out and explore on foot, or you may prefer to hire a bike and hit the cycling trails.

  • Wanaka - Skydiving - from - NZD379

Enjoy a morning at leisure in Wanaka before getting back on the road and making tracks for Franz Josef. This is another incredible drive that you're going to want to have your camera ready for. Depending on the weather, stop off at either Lake Hawea or Lake Wanaka, both boasting incredible lookout points. Along the way, your leader will pause at some off the beaten track spots to snap some pictures and stretch your legs. Arrive into Franz Josef in the early evening and perhaps head out to one of the town’s cosy pubs for dinner.

Rise and shine – you’re in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and there's so much to discover here. Known for the dazzling Franz Josef glacier and awe-inspiring views of Mt Cook, this is natural beauty on the biggest scale. The region also has a cultural history that’s every bit as captivating as its natural wonders. Only found in the South Island of New Zealand, pounamu (greenstone) is an important part of Maori culture. Today you’ll pay a visit to a local gallery where you’ll have the chance to carve your own pounamu pendant while learning about its spiritual and cultural significance. If you’d like to get up close and personal with Franz Josef Glacier in the afternoon, you can arrange for a helicopter to drop you in for a hike. You may prefer to sit back and unwind in local hot springs, or head out kayaking on an icy blue glacial lake. Your leader will be on hand to help make arrangements.

  • Franz Josef - Glacier Lake Kayaking - NZD165
  • Franz Josef - Skydiving - from - NZD399
  • Franz Josef - Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk - Free

Stop off in the lovely little town of Hokitika where a visit to a pounamu factory will give you the chance to pick up any last souvenirs of gifts. If time allows, there may be the chance to check out the National Kiwi Centre – the nocturnal house here gives visitors the opportunity to see how these delightful birds behave at night. The next stretch of your journey may just be the most magnificent – hop aboard the TranzAlpine train back to Christchurch, widely believed to be one of the top train journeys in the world.
