I had the same problem for a while, I hesitated to do full safari history clearing, I did restart, clear 1 hour or last day of history use … but didn’t work. Now, I cleared the whole safari history then restarted my iPhone, tried CNN.com and it worked instantly

I am. Safari is loading some webpages more slowly in recent versions, including here in ASC.

I’ve also hit some webpages that fail loading (usually when opening in the background), but loading another (lighter) webpage (e.g. the DDG homepage) and then immediately backing up to the webpage that failed clears that.

Other webpages will open very quickly.

I do have lots of tabs open, with multiple tab groups, and haven’t been inclined to close everything to test whether that is involved.

This with an iPad Pro M2, so not old and not slow.

Hello yes I had the same problem, is very annoying, is worse than Windows

Why Is Safari So Slow on iPhone & iPad

What to know.

  • Why is Safari so slow lately? You may have a weak cellular or Wi-Fi signal or too many tabs open.
  • If Safari is slow still, open the Safari app, touch and hold the tabs icon, and tap Close All (#) Tabs.
  • You can also open Settings, tap General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

Why is Safari so slow on my iPhone? If Safari is slow to load, you may have too many tabs open or not enough iPad or iPhone storage available. There are a few other ways to fix Safari acting slow, too. Read on to find out!

Check Your Internet Speed

Close all safari tabs, clear browsing history and data, check iphone or ipad storage, reset network settings.

You need a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection on your iPhone or iPad, or Safari will run slowly. To check your Wi-Fi or cellular connection, look at the symbols at the top-right of your screen.

check wifi and cellular signal if safari slow

The four vertical bars represent your iPhone's cellular connection. The more bars are white, the stronger the connection. If only one or no bars are white, Safari will run extremely slowly or not at all. You may also see 5G, 4G, or 3G, depending on your iPhone model, and whether or not your cellular carrier offers those speeds. If you're relying on your cellular connection alone for your internet connection, Safari may still be slow if the network is congested or you've used or almost used up your data for the month.

iPhone Life

The pie slice-shaped icon to the right of the cellular connection bars represents your iPhone's Wi-Fi signal. The more white bars you see, the stronger your connection. If you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network or are out of range of the network you are connected to, you'll see LTE instead. This means that your iPhone is relying on its cellular connection to browse the web.

If you think there's a problem with your cellular connection, we have a troubleshooting article on what to do if your data is not working on your iPhone or iPad. We also have an article about how to fix it if your Wi-Fi is slow .

If Safari is running slowly, it may be because you have too many tabs open. Close all Safari tabs and see if Safari speeds up! If you regularly leave multiple tabs open, you can set Safari tabs to close automatically on a regular schedule.

Safari slow to load still? Try the next step.

Safari acting slow still? It's time to clear the browsing history and data on your iPhone or iPad. We can also offer guidance if you  can't clear your Safari browsing data .

Safari browser slow still? Read on!

If Safari is slow after the previous steps, check your iPad or iPhone storage and optimize storage if needed. There's no hard and fast rule for how much storage should be free, but I've found that keeping roughly 25% of my storage free keeps things running quickly and smoothly.

Safari loading slowly still? There's one more thing to try!

There's one more thing to try if you want to make Safari run faster: reset your network settings.

  • What if Safari is not working on my iPhone at all? If Safari isn't working on your iPhone or iPad, make sure you have a strong cellular or Wi-Fi connection. You can also check to see if you've set Screen Time limits for Safari, and clear your Safari history and browsing data.
  • Can you tell me what to do when Safari says Safari cannot open the page? Yes, we can help you fix that! We have a troubleshooting article on how to fix the "Safari cannot open the page"  error message. Solutions include removing extensions, clearing your Safari cache, and more.
  • Why is my Google search not working? If you're having trouble with Google not showing search results , close and reopen the app, and make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection. You can also make sure the app is updated, reboot your iPhone, and more.

ipad is very slow

“Why is my iPad so slow?” If your iPad is very slow, it’s a sure sign that something isn’t working the way it should. Unfortunately, there are a lot of “somethings” to consider. Your iPad’s performance issues may be caused by your battery, iOS version, storage, and a host of other factors.

But here’s the silver lining – once you know what caused the slowdown, fixing it is straightforward. In this article, we’ll break down all the possible reasons why your iPad is running slow as well as their exact solutions. Read on!

Table of Contents

Why is My iPad Running Slow?

As we briefly mentioned earlier, there are many possible reasons why your iPad is slow. It’s important to pinpoint the exact cause because each issue has a specific solution. To help you quickly figure out the problem and jump to the correct solution, we prepared a detailed menu:

How to Conduct iPad Performance Test

If you know your way around your device, you can also figure out why your iPad is running slow and freezing by monitoring your device’s different components.

In other words, you will want to check out your battery, memory, network, storage, and processor speed, among other things. While you can do it manually by seeking out their respective menus one by one, we suggest using the following apps from the App Store:

  • AnTuTu Benchmark. AnTuTu Benchmark is a popular and intelligent app that not only collects your iPad’s performance data, it analyzes it for you as well. It will score your device’s performance (against a benchmark), test your iPad storage’s reading and writing speed, measure your network speed, and more.
  • System Status Pro: hw monitor. System Status Pro provides in-depth information about your device. It lacks the “scoring system” of AnTuTu Benchmark, but you will know everything about your iPad’s battery, disk, network, CPU, and hardware information. It also provides resource graphs that can record your iPad’s memory consumption during up to 3 minutes of background activity. Here’s the free version .
  • Battery Testing. Unlike the other 2 suggestions, the Battery Testing app gives you a ton of data about just your iPad battery. Battery Testing can monitor battery health and track its current raw data (like voltages and charge cycles). It can also monitor your device’s runtimes, which tracks how long your iPad’s battery lasts. This is a handy tool to monitor your battery’s performance over time.

How to Speed Up a Slow iPad

In this section, we provide you with step-by-step instructions for different methods to fix a slow iPad. These methods solve specific problems that may have caused the reduced performance. It’s important to use the correct method for your device’s issues.

Method 1: Force Quit Applications

Even when you exit your apps by returning to the home screen, they are still running to some extent in the background.

To force quit running apps, swipe up from the bottom of your screen and pause for a second until you see snapshots of all previously opened apps. This feature is called the App Switcher.

App Switcher feature on the iPad

You can swipe left and right to browse and swipe up to force quit the app.

Method 2: Reboot Your iPad

Some apps continue running in the background even if you force quit them via the App Switcher. Rebooting your iPad will shut down all running processes and clear out its memory.

To reboot your iPad:

Settings app on the iPad

Wait for your iPad screen to go completely black. Then, turn it back on by pressing and holding the power button until you see the Apple logo.

Method 3: Turn Off Battery Saving Mode

As we previously mentioned, Battery Saving Mode is a feature on the iPad that limits certain functions to conserve power. This includes reducing the iPad’s CPU clock speed, which saves power but it’s likely why your iPad is slowing down.

To turn off Battery Saving Mode:

Low Power Mode in iPad's battery settings

Method 4: Update Your Software

Updating your operating system and application software may help speed up your iPad. If the problem is affecting general iPad performance, start by searching for iPadOS updates. Go to Settings > General  > Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.

If the problem seems to affect a specific app or only occurs when that app is running, you should update to the app’s latest version. Go to the App Store and see if there are updates for the app. If an update is available, install it and try using the app again.

If you are still experiencing poor performance after updating your software, wait for about 30 minutes and reboot the iPad. New updates may take a while to fully integrate with the system and may be adjusting to the power demands of the new features. A reboot allows a fresh restart.

Method 5: Check Your Internet Connection

Your iPad may be running slowly due to an unstable or poor Internet connection. This can be caused by a wide variety of problems that you need to address methodically to fix the issue. Try the following steps to verify you have a suitable Internet connection.

  • Make sure your router is properly located in range of your iPad and that all cables are connected securely.
  • Use a third-party tool such as SpeedTest to test your current network speed.
  • Manually reconnect your iPad to the network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi to see your network connection. If alternate networks are available, you can try connecting to one of them and see if performance is better. You can also use the Forget This Network feature to remove a network and its configuration details from the iPad. This may clear up authentication issues that are slowing down your device’s performance.

Network settings icon on the iPad

Method 6: Clean Your iPad’s Caches

Cache data accumulates over time and may even get corrupted. Both issues may impact your iPad’s performance; a full storage will have no room for new cache files, while corrupted cache data can cause your iPad to run slowly or even crash.

Fortunately, we can manually clear cache data ourselves. Below, we’ll show you how to clear your browser and app cache data.

To clear Safari’s browser cache on your iPad:

iPad Safari history settings

To clear Google Chrome’s browser cache on your iPad:

Google Chrome app on iPad

To clear app caches on your iPad:

Step 1. Open the Settings app.

Step 2. Tap on the app you want to clean.

Step 3. Tap Clear Cache .

Method 7: Remove Big Files

A full storage can no longer accommodate new cache files. We need to make room for the cache data in order to improve device performance. In other words, we need to free more storage and clean up the iPad to run faster.

Consider deleting apps, photos, videos, and other data you don’t need anymore. You can also use iCloud to save high-resolution copies of your photos online and keep smaller copies on your iPad.

Method 8: Adjust Your iPad Settings

Your iPad is a very customizable device with many settings that can be tweaked to improve a slow-performing device. Check the following settings

Low Power Mode

iPads (especially the newer ones) are pretty good at self-maintenance. However, they are still vulnerable to performance issues that can be caused by many different factors. Fortunately, almost all scenarios where the iPad is loading slow have exact solutions that we can do ourselves.

To prevent performance issues in the future, keep your iPad’s iOS updated, take care of your battery , maintain your storage, and use a strong internet connection.

Why is my iPad Air taking so long to turn on?

Here are possible reasons why your iPad Air is taking so long to turn on:

  • Full storage – If you have a lot of data on your iPad Air, it has to load everything into memory so you can easily access them later.
  • Low battery – Your iPad Air may be struggling to get enough power to turn on immediately.
  • iOS or app issues – If there are software issues on your device, your iPad Air will try to resolve them as it starts up. Bugs may also be causing problems during the startup process.

How do I clean up my iPad Mini to make it faster?

To clean up your iPad Mini to make it faster, try these tips:

  • Delete apps and files that you no longer need.
  • Delete glitchy and unstable apps.
  • Clear your browser cache (Settings app > Safari) or (Google Chrome app > 3 dots > History).
  • Clear your app caches (Settings > app you want to clear).

Why is my iPad Pro taking so long to update?

There are 2 possible reasons why your iPad Pro is taking so long to update:

  • Low storage space – Your iPad Pro is struggling to find enough space for the files it needs to install the update. Delete large apps and files you no longer need or upload them to iCloud.
  • Poor internet connection – Your iPad Pro needs to download the update package from the internet before installing it. Considering that iOS 16 is around 3-5 GB, you need a fast and stable internet connection.

Why is my iPad charging extremely slow?

Here are possible reasons why your iPad is charging extremely slow:

  • Your charging cable or adaptor is damaged, not properly connected, or isn’t an original Apple accessory.
  • You are charging from a low-power source such as a USB port on a computer or a low-output adapter.
  • You are using resource-heavy apps (like video games) while charging your iPad.
  • Your iPad’s battery health is low due to damage or natural wear.

Safari Running Slow? – Here are Some Quick Fixes!

Apple’s Safari is known to be amongst the best browsers due to its fast performance and simple interface. However, it can still run into performance issues that can be frustrating. There could be a multitude of reasons for Safari running slower than usual. So, we tried a few simple methods that might be able to fix the issue and get back on track.

Some possible reasons for this issue are the build-up of cache or cookies, outdated browsers, extensions, or plug-ins that are not being used. Once you are able to identify the issue, you can simply follow the steps to remove cache and extensions or even update the browser.

Well, let us look at everything we need to know in detail and figure out all the methods that might work best for you.

Why Is Safari So Slow?

1. build-up cache and cookies, 2. software update, 3. extensions and plug-ins issue, 4. large number of open tabs, 5. network issues, 6. limited storage space, 7. contact apple support, frequently asked questions.

Your Safari browser is running slow because of the build-up of cache and cookies. Or it could even be because you are using an outdated version of the browser, and it needs an immediate update. Furthermore, this could be simply because too many tabs are open on the system, and thus it is eventually slowing down the entire software.

As we said, this could be because of any underlying cause. You can fix all of it by simply restarting the system or the browser itself. Or you might need to try other methods that can take a few more steps. Here are some fixes you can try that worked for us too.

7 Reasons Why Safari is Running Slow + Fixes

We all know the basic idea behind using cache and cookies. They are used by websites or the system to speed up your browsing experience. However, the more you are active on the internet, the more these files are piled up over time.

Hence, there isn’t enough space for the browser or the system to store any more of these small files. So, we need to eliminate these to fix your Safari issues. Here is how you can do it.

  • Open Safari Browser.
  • Now, click on History on the top taskbar and choose Clear History in the drop-down menu.

Build-Up Cache and Cookies

  • Select the time duration besides the Clear option, then click on Clear History.

Clear History

The above steps will clear the history and the cookies from the site. Now close Safari and start again to check if the issue is fixed.

Here is another way you can empty caches on the Safari browser.

  • Open the Safari browser and click on Develop on the top taskbar.

Safari browser

  • Now, from the drop-down menu option, select Empty Caches or press Option + Command + E.

Empty Caches

Another method you can try is updating the Safari browser by updating your macOS . Since Safari is an in-built software developed by the tech giant itself, they often release updates to fix such errors.

Here is how you can check for updates and update your Safari app when needed.

  • Go to the Apple menu and then choose System Settings .
  • Then click on Software Update.
  • Wait a few seconds for the system to check for an available update. Install the update if available.

Software Update

Once you update your macOS, your Safari app will also be updated. You can then wait for the system to restart and check if the app works fine.

Some extensions or plug-ins might be outdated and cause your Safari to slow down and cause performance issues. Hence, you can update or uninstall these extensions from your system.

You can follow the steps below to check which extensions you are currently using and then uninstall the ones you are not using anymore.

  • Open Safari browser.
  • Go to the Safari option on the taskbar and choose Settings.

Extensions and Plug-ins Issue

  • Now, click on the Extensions option on the menu bar.
  • Next, choose the Extension you want to remove and select Uninstall.

Unistall Extension

You can keep doing this for all the extensions you do not want to keep and uninstall them from your browser. This will eventually speed up the performance of Safari.

Have you been currently using too many tabs on your Safari browser? Well, this could be one of the biggest reasons your Safari browser has slowed down or even glitched overall. The best way to go from here is simply close some tabs and give your browser a breather.

If that does not work, you might have to close the browser and restart the system. For this, simply right-click the Safari icon in the dock below. Press Quit and the browser will close with all its tabs.

Before trying out any other solution, it is best to check your internet connection and ensure it works properly. Your network issues might be causing the website and other downloads to slow down.

Ensure your router is properly connected or your MacBook receives a proper internet connection. For this, you can check your internet speed through multiple sites on the web. If everything looks fine, you can try the other methods listed below.

You might need to clear some storage space on your Mac . Some apps fail to function because your system does not have enough space to run the in-built apps such as Safari.

For this, you can check the current status of your storage on Mac and determine how you can make space for the system apps to run smoothly.

  • Go to the Apple menu and choose System Settings .
  • Scroll down to open General and then choose Storage.

Limited Storage Space

Here, you can check all the sections that have taken up the maximum space and then delete some of the files.

The last resort here is to contact Apple support for some guidance. Although you can also check for some hardware issues, it is best to speak to an executive from Apple support.

Simply visit the official Apple website and connect to an online executive where you can present your issues and try their suggested fixes.

Check our article on How to Add More Storage to MacBook’s?

You can start by updating the macOS, which will, in turn, update the Safari app as well. Moreever, you can also clear caches and cookies to help bring the safari to speed.

Safari is known to be faster on Apple devices such as your MacBook. At the same time, Google Chrome performs the best on all devices, including your smartphones. However, it depends largely on the operating system and the device’s hardware.

The fastest browser for Apple is indeed Safari. It is built for macOS and iOS devices, providing an optimized browsing experience.

The fixes to a slow-running Safari are simple. Clearing your cache, updating the app or your macOS, closing unwanted tabs, and clearing storage space are all excellent ways of ensuring your Apple search engine runs perfectly.

If these do not work, you can check your internet connection and close the tabs you are working on. The more tabs you have opened, the slower it will work. Similarly, there are other methods too that are tried and tested to fix Safari issues, and you can try them as well before contacting Apple Support.

Safari Too Slow on Your iPhone? 4 Ways to Speed It Up

Are webpages taking forever to load in Safari? Follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve your speed-related issues.

Safari is the native browser on Apple devices. While it's usually fast, sometimes Safari can be slow or laggy. When this happens, it can be bothersome, and some might even download another third-party browser.

If you're noticing that Safari is running slow on your iPhone, there are several things you can do to speed it up again. Give these tips a try, and hopefully, Safari will be at full speed in no time.

Check Your Internet Speed

Before passing the blame on Safari, it might be a good idea to check your internet speed. That way, you can make sure Safari is the issue and rule out anything else before continuing.

If you're connected to Wi-Fi, open another computer or device on the same Wi-Fi network, then head to Speedtest's site and check your internet speed. You won't want to do this on your iPhone, as Safari issues can slow your connection time, giving you a false negative.

If your internet speed is fast, then Safari is the issue, and it's time to fix it.

1. Close All Your Safari Tabs

Safari can usually handle a lot of bandwidth and keep many pages open. However, some websites drain Safari data. By closing all the currently open tabs, you can confirm if one of the open websites was using too much data.

To close all the tabs on Safari, open Safari and hold the Tab button in the bottom right-hand corner. A prompt will appear for you to close all the tabs. Once this appears, hit Close All Tabs . Then, give Safari a try again.

2. Clear Your Browsing History and Data

If clearing the tabs didn't fix the issue, you can reset Safari and clear up the cache, speeding it up in the process. To clear Safari, head to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Data .

Once you do this, relaunch Safari and see if it's loading up pages quickly enough. If it's faster for a little while but begins to slow down again, proceed to the next tip.

3. Check Your iPhone's Storage

If your iPhone storage is almost full, that means it can't handle much else. Safari, like most apps, uses device storage to store data from the app. And low storage means Safari won't have enough memory to work.

This is why some users find Safari temporarily faster once they clear their browsing history and data. However, some users might have used so much storage that Safari might not even speed up when you clear the cache.

Luckily, it's easy to check if this is an issue. All you need to do is head to Settings > General > Storage and see how much space your iPhone has used. And if it's almost full, you might have to delete some large files.

However, if you don't want to lose precious data, consider signing up for a paid iCloud plan .

4. Reset Network Settings

When all else fails, you can reset your iPhone's Network Settings. Doing this will reset all network-related connections on your iPhone, hopefully speeding up Safari in the process. Head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings to do this.

Once you do this, you'll need to set up your network connections again. This means re-entering your Wi-Fi passwords. However, it can clear up a lot of bugs, so it is worth a try if all else fails. You can also reset your iPhone to factory settings as a last resort.

Browse Seamlessly in Safari

Safari comes pre-installed on all Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. And since it's the native browser, it works seamlessly across all your apps and Apple devices.

While switching to a third-party browser like Chrome might seem tempting when Safari is slow or lagging, you'll miss out on a seamless experience. So, it's worth taking the time to fix whatever issue you're facing.

Is your iPad running slowly, or does it bog down after a few hours? While reduced performance is more likely to happen with older iPad models , even the newest iPad can feel slow at times. We'll explain why, plus what to do to get back on the fast track.

Why Your iPad Is So Slow

The good news is that this is likely a software problem, especially for the latest iPads. Here are some reasons your iPad is slower than it once was:

  • One or more apps have performance issues.
  • A website, or the whole internet connection, is slow.
  • The iPad's operating system is outdated.
  • Your tablet is getting too hot.
  • Background App Refresh is turned on.
  • Its storage space is full.
  • The battery is failing.

iPads and computers are functionally different. If, after trying all of our tips, your iPad still can't perform the way you need it to, consider the differences between a tablet and a laptop . You might decide that a full-on computer is better suited for your needs.

What to Do When Your iPad Is Slow

Before you go out and buy a new tablet , walk through our solutions to help get your iPad racing again (or as close to it as physically possible):

Close all open apps . One reason an iPad slows down is because of a problem with an app rather than the iPad itself. Restarting your apps may fix the problem.

Restart the iPad . When you hit a snag with any electronic device, an excellent early step is to restart it.

A reboot flushes everything from memory without deleting anything, so give it a shot before you continue with these tips.

Turn off Background App Refresh . As useful of a feature as this is, having apps hang around in the background is a surefire way to slow down your tablet. If you think you know which apps are to blame, turn this feature off for just those apps; otherwise, disable the whole function and see if that makes your iPad any faster.

Address your poor Wi-Fi connection . It's extremely common to conflate slow internet with a slow device. If your connection to the internet is slow, it makes your iPad feel slow because downloading, streaming, and browsing are all negatively affected. Fix your slow internet and you might just feel like you have a brand-new iPad!

Update to the latest version of iPadOS . It's important to keep the operating system up to date. Doing so ensures that you have the most recent performance updates and security fixes.

Disable Low Power Mode . Your iPad uses less power when this is turned on, so apps and other functions might run slower than you're used to. To turn this off, switch off the toggle in Settings > Battery .

Fix the overheating issue . Slow apps and general sluggishness without any real cause could mean your iPad is overheating.

Install an ad blocker . If your iPad primarily slows down when browsing the web, but an internet speed test returns normal results, then the pages you're visiting are to blame for making your iPad slow.

The more advertisements a web page has, the longer it takes to fully load. Ad blockers prevent ads from loading, which in turn can speed up your iPad's access to those pages.

Delete apps you no longer use . This will free up more space on your device which in turn can speed up overall performance. Apple recommends having at least 1 GB of free space at all times.

To see which apps use the most space on your iPad, go to Settings > General > iPad Storage . Delete the apps you don't use by tapping the app and choosing Delete App .

Don't want to completely delete the app? Choose Offload App instead of the delete option. Doing this will remove the app to free up the space it's using up, but the app's data will remain should you decide to reinstall the app later.

Factory reset the iPad . This is a drastic step, so be sure to try all the above tips first. If your iPad is slow because of a software problem, a software reset is the answer.

Replace the iPad's battery . This isn't as easy to do yourself as these other solutions, but it might be necessary. Your iPad running slowly could be a symptom of a failing battery.

Buy a new iPad . Although it's not technically a solution, it is your final option if you want to stick to Apple's tablet but these software and hardware fixes weren't enough to speed up your iPad.

There could be several reasons it's charging slowly , including not using the charger that came with your iPad. Also, charging your iPad with your computer may not produce enough power to charge properly.

If you have an app that won't update on your iPad, including the OS, the first thing to try is to reboot your iPad. You can also remove and reinstall the app. Make sure you have a reliable network connection; the download may keep stalling out if you have a spotty connection.

Troubleshooting, how to speed up or slow down any video in safari on iphone / ipad.

How to Speed Up or Slow Down Any Video in Safari

Do you want to speed up or slow down video playback on a website where the feature isn’t supported? As long as you use Safari to browse the web on your iPhone or iPad, there’s a nifty Shortcuts workaround that you can use to adjust the video playback speed according to your liking.

Popular video streaming platforms like YouTube allow users to conveniently change the video playback speed from the player itself. Unfortunately, a lot of websites don’t support this feature and you may have noticed that you’re unable to change the speed of all the videos that you’re watching in Safari. Well, this particular iOS shortcut has managed to address this issue. You can install and use it to speed up or slow down pretty much any video within Safari.

The Shortcuts app has been really helpful in bringing features that aren’t natively available in iOS/iPadOS and this time is no different. Here, we’ll be taking a look at how you can use the Shortcuts app to speed up or slow down any video in Safari.

How to Speed Up or Slow Down Any Video in Safari with Shortcuts

For those who aren’t aware, the iOS Shortcuts app is pre-installed on devices running the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS. However, if you’re iPhone or iPad running an earlier version, you’ll need to download it from the App Store . Once you’re done, simply follow these steps:

ipad safari browser slow

That’s it. The video will resume playing at the speed you selected using the shortcut.

Note that you can speed up the video to a maximum of 2x, but you can only slow it down to 0.8x using this particular shortcut. In comparison, the YouTube player lets you slow videos down to 0.25x.

What makes this Shortcut unique is the fact that you can run it from the iOS share sheet. You don’t need to open the Shortcuts app at all, unlike several other shortcut actions. Hence, it feels like a feature that’s natively built into iOS rather than a third-party solution.

The Gallery section of the Shortcuts app is a home to several other handy shortcuts too. For example, you can install the Convert Burst to GIF shortcut to make a GIF from your burst photos . Apart from the Gallery, you also have access to hundreds of other user-created shortcuts as long as you’ve allowed the installation of untrusted shortcuts on your device . Shortcuts is a pretty handy app, so don’t miss some of the great tricks you can do with it .

Did you speed up or slow down video playback in Safari on your iPhone or iPad? What’s your take on this nifty shortcut? How often do you find this shortcut useful and on what websites do you need it? Do share your personal experiences and feel free to leave your valuable feedback in the comments section down below.

How do you slow it down to less than .8?

I get the same “there are not videos” problem, looks like something broke

You are amazing!! Thanks for sharing this with me

Great information and I fix my issue for a long time

Thank you very much

I found it!! But it says there are no videos on the page even though there is a video playing. How to get around this error ? Is it because the video is embedded?

There’s no “Share Sheet Shortcuts” in iOS 14.6

Look for the “Share Sheet Shortcuts” or you can use the search bar and find the shortcut by typing in “Change Video Speed”.

Hello, my iPad mini 2 still works and I can still use apps like Netflix and YouTube and they work just fine. The thing is Safari is kind of crippled and many websites work very slowly on it. Any idea why it might be? Because two years ago this wasn't the case. Any alternative browsers that are faster? I'd like to keep using my iPad…Or should I buy a used iPad? How's Safari on iPad mini 4 or any iPad that supports the latest iOS?

Try an ad blocker or maybe a browser that has that built in like Brave and see if it improved the experience. Instead of buying used I’d check out either the refurbished ones from Apple or the entry level iPad which is always good value in my opinion.

Get either the iPad mini 5 or iPad 8th gen minimum. The latest iPad 9th gen is also very good value for the money. We have an Air 2 (faster CPU than mini 4) at home. I already find it unbearably laggy on Safari on Javascript and media-heavy websites despite using ad blockers.

macrumors 601

Don't get a mini 4. The mini 4 used to much faster than my mini 2 before iPadOS. It was still kinf of ok with iPadOS 13, but 14 destroyed it, now it's virtually the same speed as the mini 2 (on IOS 10). And it seems it's even worse with 15. The mini 5 is night and day, much faster. Don't gen anything below A12 if you want a fast browsing experience

The 5 has an A12 chip, the 4 an A8 chip, i.e. there is a difference of four years in chip development. That matters. I have the 5 myself. Works like a charm with the latest iPadOS. At the moment, it is available at the Refurbished Store in Germany. Starting with 379 Euro while a new iPad mini 6 starts at 549. (In Germany and the EU, taxes are included when prices are shown.) In Poland I only saw iPad Pro for 2037.45€ and another iPad Pro for 1303.77€ so obviously I'm not going to get those. I'll think about it, but yeah, I'm aiming for iPad mini 5. Anything that allows me to surf the web, because my current iPad is very very laggy and even restoring it to the factory settings did not help. It's very laggy. Many websites crash and even MacRumors loads very slowly. All the other apps work fine though. It's just web browsers that cripple it. The battery is still fine, so it's a shame, but then again I bought it in 2014… Click to expand...
1BadManVan said: If mobile data is important then the mini 5 is a good choice. The only real upgrade the iPad 9 has over the mini is an A13 chip vs A12. Same base storage, same amount of ram and such. But if you do plan to keep the iPad for long term, the 9 will last a bit longer for support. For me, mobile data is a big deal because I spend a lot of time away from home for work and the iPad having its own data is huge for me. Click to expand...
Digitalguy said: The speed difference between A12 and A13 will be barely noticeable if at all. As for lasting longer, no gurantees. There are rumors Apple could cut A8 and A9 together this year (and some say even A9X but I doubt it) with iPads from 2014 and 2017 being cut from updates at the same time. So being a generation newer is no guarantee of more updates, especially if RAM is the same. Click to expand...

Not with the mini 4. That thing is unbearable to use. I realized I hadn’t even touched it for several months, so I wound up just giving it to my dad a while back. He wanted to pay me for it but I would have felt guilty taking any amount of money for it from him. He uses it occasionally for watching videos, but even he commented on how slow it is at a lot of things. tl;dr don’t buy an iPad mini 4. Click to expand...

I don’t regret my mini 4 purchase. It was a great iPad for a few years. It’s just awful now. Luckily the iPad mini 5 is still running great so I haven’t had the need to upgrade yet. Might get the next one since that new design is very tempting.

I have both the Mini 4 and 5. No idea how you’re still using a Mini 2… I had one on release and it broke in ‘18… even then it wasn’t performing well. The Mini 5 is an amazing piece of gear and will slice through all websites like a knife through butter. I have had the Mini 5 since Feb 2020 and absolutely love it with no intention of upgrading anytime soon because it’s so fast.

Modern websites generally uses a lot more resources than it was 5 years before, and iOS memory management does no magic when it comes to Safari and the Web. And there’s no getting around that. Using alternative browsers may help(content blocking, cutting out some features), but not much. You may want to avoid browsing web on your iPad mini with only 1GB of RAM, which can handle like 4 or 5 light tabs. If you are looking for used iPads, iPad mini 5/iPad 8th gen(3GB RAM) is bare minimum, iPad Pro 2018 or higher(4GB+ RAM) is ideal.

Please read our suggestions… small feature! Plz

It would make a WORLD of difference for someone like me who has hundreds of tabs & windows open (IPad & laptop) at any given time…... a small timeline view/hint when you’re scrolling through all open tabs in that window - like when the tab was first opened/created or modified last , or something similar. Another addition - To Name/title any open Chrome window. Not only folders of open tabs like Safari allows (bc that syncs to any open window) or bookmarks folders. But the windows themselves. I like to have multiple windows open at a time so this would be a small help when sorting through all my shhhtuff. Hope y’all read this soon, otherwise great work!

Why can’t I switch profiles?!

I have used Chrome for years and it has always been so easy to switch from one profile to another. I don’t do it super often but my work uses Google Workspace so I have a work profile, a personal profile, and a profile I use for the social media management I do with my community theater. On the desktop it is no trouble at all to switch from one to the other, on the app it is practically impossible. I can see the profiles when I go into settings but I can’t change from one to the other unless I sign out of the “primary” profile. I DON’T WANT TO SIGN OUT OF MY PROFILES! Every single time I do when I want to sign back on I have to go through 2-step verification and I would just as soon stop using Chrome then have to do that over and over again. It used to be so easy to switch, it still is on the Google app, but Chrome has to be different. Maybe I should delete Chrome and just use Google and Safari in tandem. 🤬

App getting worse and not listening to the community

I honestly switched to this from safari cause the middle search bar button allowed you to type on the search bar a lot easier. Now it's a new tab button, the community has expressed time and time again about how stupid this is and it has made reaching the search bar at the top hard especially on bigger phones. Despite the fanfare, the team working on this app has never done anything to solve this issue and my experience with this app has been going down ever since. As of now I'll stop using this app and new features that they push out for this app has negligible gain while they don't solve the issues that users feedback. I don't want to use a product where the team doesn't listen to their community and do what they want to do instead of what consumers want. I have feedback this issue time and time again on their support page to no constructive response so it's finally time I switch to other browsers like Firefox with the search bar at the bottom.

Compare web browser features

What should you look for in a web browser.

The best web browser should be fast and clean to give you the best browsing experience. You don’t want excessive bloat that can bog down your device and cause web pages to load at a dial-up pace.

And while speed is great, security should also be a high priority. Internet browsers should protect users from trackers, hackers, and pesky internet eavesdroppers.

Ultimately, a browser should be your interactive window looking out into the World Wide Web—a picture frame that should never distract you from the view at hand.

Get the best router to complement your fast browser

We tested and reviewed more routers than we can count to determine the best of the best you can get. Go with the TP-Link Archer AX11000 if you want a lot of bang for your buck, or choose the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 if you want lots of features at a higher price. The NETGEAR Nighthawk RAXE500 is the fastest router we’ve tested to date, but it ain’t cheap.

Data this browser collects from you

And more (see App Privacy )

Chrome is the fastest and best web browser on Microsoft Windows and an excellent alternative to Safari on a Mac in terms of speed. However, you agree to Google’s excessive data collection in exchange for speed and convenience.

More about Google Chrome

Google Chrome is the fastest web browser available for Windows machines. It surpasses the competition in three out of four tests and outranks  Microsoft Edge in all but one test.

On Apple Mac, Chrome is a heavy hitter in performance, outranking Safari in two out of four tests . It’s a good alternative to Safari, but Chrome’s data collection issues are a little disconcerting. If you’re worried about how Google uses your data, Safari or Microsoft Edge may be your better alternative.

Still, despite privacy concerns, Chrome is a great browser overall if you use Google’s services. It’s probably the ideal default browser if you shift between Windows, Android, and Apple devices.

  • Supports a huge extensions library
  • Syncs across devices
  • Collects lots of data
  • Uses lots of memory

Best for security—Mozilla Firefox

  • Ranks the lowest for speed in tests
  • Desktop: Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Contact info

If you want the best internet browser that prioritizes security over data collection, Firefox is your best bet. However, it’s not the fastest browser available.

More about Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla’s Firefox browser isn’t known for speed. It falls into last place in most of our tests for Windows and Mac, and that’s okay. Firefox is more about security features than speed, which is ideal if you’re more concerned about blocking malware than loading pages in a flash.

Firefox received a facelift in 2021. Mozilla redesigned the tabs, prompts, menus, and overall look, giving Firefox a new modern interface. Under the hood, Firefox strives to keep you safe online with tools like DNS-over-HTTPS , which encrypts browser requests versus sending the information in plaintext.

  • Protects against spyware
  • Blocks almost all pop-ups
  • Consumes high memory
  • Falls behind other browsers in speed

Best for customization—Vivaldi

  • Mobile: Android

Vivaldi is great for customizing your browsing experience, but it doesn’t match the speed of Chrome or Safari.

More about Vivaldi

Vivaldi breathes new life into the tired, repetitive web browser design. Here, you can customize the start page, create and use a custom theme, customize and move the menu, customize the toolbar, and so on. You can also assign browser commands to keyboard shortcuts, map commands to gestures, and assign quick commands to the Function keys.

In terms of speed, the Vivaldi browser isn’t the fastest on the planet—at least, not yet. It’s the youngest in the batch, so there’s room for improvement. It ranks fourth in all four tests we run on Windows, while its performance jumps between third and last in the same tests on Mac.

That said, Vivaldi is an excellent middle-ground browser in terms of performance.

  • Offers plenty of customization
  • Syncs data across devices
  • Lacks iPhone, iPad versions

Best for social media—Opera

Opera browser logo

  • Includes a built-in VPN client
  • Includes social tools
  • Verifies all websites
  • Diagnostics

Opera is a good web browser if you want a built-in VPN client and social tools. It provides middle-ground performance in terms of speed.

More about Opera

The Opera browser is great if you want built-in social network tools. The sidebar includes shortcuts to Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and three others you can pin to the browser window.

Opera also supports two VPN services: Free VPN and VPN Pro . The “pro” version costs $7.99 per month and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Our FAQ explains the differences between the two services.

As for performance, Opera is the third-fastest browser in our tests for Windows , falling behind Chrome and Microsoft Edge. It has a similar performance level on our MacBook, falling behind Safari, Chrome, and Microsoft Edge in our four tests. Opera has a “battery saver” mode that reduces background activity and pauses animations, but we verified it was disabled before running our tests.

  • Includes built-in social tools
  • Loads some websites incorrectly
  • Updates less frequently than Chrome

Best for Mac—Apple Safari

Apple Safari logo

  • Provides a clean privacy report
  • Supports extensions
  • Displays tab previews
  • Competes with Chrome  in speed on Mac
  • Desktop: Mac
  • Mobile: iPhone, iPad
  • Nitro, WebKit

Safari is the best browser for Macs, hands down. Stick with Safari if you also have an iPhone or iPad. However, if you use other platforms like Windows and Android, Chrome is the better multiplatform solution—if you can ignore Chrome’s data collection woes.

More about Apple Safari

Safari is an excellent example of how Apple optimizes its software for Macs. It’s fast, simply designed, and somewhat customizable. It supports Chrome extensions, tab previews for power users, and easy translations using the menu bar. And while we will always recommend Firefox as the best browser for security , Safari’s privacy report panel lists every website that tracks you across the internet.

The drawback with Safari is that you can’t get it on anything but Apple devices. That means we could measure its performance only on our MacBook, so there are no numbers for Windows-based PCs. That said, Safari and Chrome duke it out for the fastest browser, both taking the top spots in two out of four tests. If you want speed, either browser will do.

  • Runs superfast on Macs
  • Uses low memory
  • Isn’t available outside Apple’s ecosystem
  • Has a limited extensions library

Best for Windows—Microsoft Edge

ipad safari browser slow

  • Stacks tabs vertically
  • Groups websites into Collections
  • Supports Dolby Audio and 4K
  • Competes with Chrome in speed on Windows
  • Desktop: Windows, Mac
  • Browsing history

Bottom line

Microsoft Edge is a great native browser for Microsoft Windows and a good alternative to Safari on a Mac if you need a browser that runs outside Apple’s ecosystem.

More about Microsft Edge

The original Edge browser was a clunky mess despite Microsoft’s good intentions. It used the company’s in-house EdgeHTML engine and really couldn’t compete with Chrome. Microsoft scrapped its proprietary engine in early 2020 and chose Chromium instead, the browser foundation used in Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, and more.

Now, Microsoft Edge is highly competitive in terms of speed. On Windows, it gives Chrome a run for its money, falling just a hair behind Google’s browser in three of four of our tests . On our MacBook, Chrome and Microsoft Edge are nearly identical in performance, both falling behind Safari.

  • Synchronizes across devices
  • Includes a PDF viewer
  • Lacks a version for Linux
  • Collects your browser history

Which web browsers are the fastest?

To determine the fastest browser on our list, we ran four different tests three times per browser, determined the average, and compared the results.

On Windows, Chrome tested as the fastest browser, followed by Microsoft Edge .

On Mac, Safari and Chrome shared the top spot as the fastest browser, followed by Microsoft Edge .

In all tests, Firefox was the slowest browser on our list.

See the complete test results in the Methodology section .

Browser specs and features

A web browser is software that downloads data from a remote server and pieces it all together on your screen. It’s your interactive window to the World Wide Web, a view that exists only when you open a tab and enter an address. All browsers provide this basic function, but there are five elements you should keep in mind while considering your browser options.

You want a browser that loads pages quickly and can run in-browser apps without slowing you down. A browser should have a relatively small footprint in your system memory, so it doesn’t affect the performance of your other programs and apps while you surf the internet.

Security and privacy

A browser should make secure connections to websites. They should also provide means to block malicious advertisements, cross-site trackers, cryptominers, and fingerprinters. Users should have tools to block and delete cookies, secure their passwords, and use the browser without worrying about how it collects their data.

Learn more about the best internet browsers for security .

Customization

While you don’t want your window to the internet framed with a clunky interface, it’s a nice bonus to add a personal touch. Most of the browsers on our list provide means for customization.

For example, you can apply a theme in Chrome obtained from the Chrome Web Store . You can create themes in Vivaldi, reposition the menu, or create your own menu.

Compatibility

The best browser should be compatible with the latest internet standards, like HTML5 and WebGL . A good way to benchmark a browser’s compatibility is to use the HTML5 Test website or AnTuTu’s HTML5 Test online utility. Plus, you don’t want to install a browser that can’t access all the modern functions of a website, like web apps.

Easy navigation

While customization is great, you want a browser that’s easy to use. Most browsers we list here are just that, with the address bar headlining your window to the internet. Menus should be tucked away and easily accessible. Settings should be just a click away, and bookmarks should be easy to save and load.

Our verdict: Google Chrome is the best web browser

Google Chrome is fast and available on nearly every platform. It’s our top pick in speed, as it goes head-to-head with Safari on our MacBook and Microsoft Edge on Windows. It’s also a firm alternative if you don’t want to use those native browsers.

But Microsoft Edge is an excellent third-place browser that’s accessible on nearly all platforms. It’s almost as fast as Chrome and Safari and includes a few standout features you can’t get with most browsers, like 4K Netflix streaming.

However, if you want the most secure browser on the planet, Firefox is the way to go, although it’s the slowest browser on our list.

To determine a browser’s speed, we did the following:

  • Installed a clean, current copy without any plugins or extensions
  • Closed all open programs and unnecessary processes
  • Ran four different tests three times
  • Calculated the average

To test Microsoft Edge and Safari on their native platforms, we ran browser benchmarks on a Windows laptop and a MacBook . We plugged both in for maximum power performance.

Microsoft Windows

We use a Lenovo ThinkPad with Intel’s Core i7-10850H 6-core processor, 16GB of system memory, and a 500GB SSD for these tests.

Chrome is our biggest performer, taking the top spot in three out of four tests. Microsoft Edge always comes in at a close second, save for one test where it switches seats with Chrome. Firefox is our lowest performer of the browser batch.

JetStream 2

This test measures how fast a browser loads data and how quickly it executes code—higher numbers are better.

Speedometer

This test measures the responsiveness of web applications by simulating user input.

Basemark Web 3.0

This tool performs 20 tests—map scaling, drawing, and so on—in one sitting. It’s also popular for testing a laptop’s battery life, as it loops through all tests until the battery dies.

MotionMark 1.2

This test benchmarks the browser’s capability to render and animate complex scenes within a set frame rate.

Apple macOS

We use a 2018 MacBook Air (A1392) with Intel’s Core i5-8210Y 2-core CPU, 8GB of system memory, and a 128GB SSD for these tests. There’s a huge processor difference between this machine and the Lenovo notebook, so we rerun the benchmarks to compare Safari against the competition on the same Core i5 CPU.

Overall, Safari and Chrome go head to head for the fastest browser. Safari grabs the top spot in two tests, while Chrome dominates in the other two. Microsoft Edge is the best alternative to Safari and Chrome, while Firefox has the lowest performance of the six.

This tool performs 20 tests—map scaling, drawing, and so on—in one sitting.

FAQ about the best web browsers

Internet browser vs. web browser: what's the difference.

Although we tend to use the term, there’s no such thing as an “internet browser.” The internet is a global network of cables, servers, and switches—it’s the hardware needed to deliver information to your eyeballs. A browser is software that accesses software—the World Wide Web in this case.

In other words, we connect to the internet and use the web. But since “internet” is easier to read and write than “World Wide Web,” we typically stick with the former term.

What is a virtual private network (VPN)?

A virtual private network creates a secure, private connection between your device and the destination. It requires software installed on your device that encrypts your data and establishes a direct, encrypted connection to a remote VPN server. The server then decrypts your data and sends it as plaintext to the destination.

Overall, a VPN prevents the destination from seeing your geological location, IP address, and operating system.

Want to see how a VPN affects your speed?

Run our internet speed test with a VPN enabled. After that, rerun the test with the VPN disabled and then compare the results.

Run a Speed Test

What is a Device ID?

A Device Identifier (ID) is a unique string of numbers derived from other hardware-identifying numbers stored on your device. Browsers use this information to identify your device.

What is a User ID?

A User Identifier (User ID) is a unique profile created by the browser and stored locally as a cookie. This profile includes information such as your processor, storage, screen resolution, and operating system.

What is Chromium?

Chromium is Google’s free, open-source code provided to all internet browser developers. These developers can compile Google’s code with proprietary components and unique designs (Microsoft Edge) or compile the code “as is” (Chromium).

What is HTML5?

HTML5 is the fifth generation of HyperText Markup Language (HTML), the programming language that creates websites you see in your browser. There are three components in HTML5: Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) that dictate how web page elements are displayed, JavaScript that executes interactive components, and HTML code that brings it all together.

HTML5 eliminates the need for browser plugins, like Adobe Flash, Silverlight, and Java.

What is WebGL?

Web Graphics Library (or WebGL ) is an application programming interface (API) that allows a browser to render 2D and 3D graphics. These elements are written in JavaScript and OpenGL ES for the web and are executed on your device’s graphics cores, not your processor. WebGL eliminates the need for a browser plugin, eliminating security risks and providing better animation.

To see WebGL in action, visit the Get WebGL website to view a cube rotating in your browser without any additional software.

What is HTTPS?

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (or HTTPS) is a secure version of the application layer protocol used to deliver HTML files, video, and more across the internet.

In a nutshell, the browser (client) sends a request to the server hosting a website. In turn, the server sends the appropriate files to your device that are pieced together within your browser. These files reside on your device as cache.

Browsers and servers that support HTTPS communicate using the Transport Layer Security cryptographic protocol to encrypt the connection between the website and the browser, not the actual data. This encrypted connection prevents eavesdroppers from obtaining your data but only while it’s en route.

What is DNS-over-HTTPS?

DNS-over-HTTPS is a means of sending a browser query over a secure connection.

Short for Domain Name System, DNS essentially translates alphabetic URLs into proper numeric ones. For instance, when you type “google.com” into your address bar, a DNS service consults its address book and sees that the numerical address is 172.217.2.110. It then sends your browser request accordingly.

Typically this request speeds along the internet highways as plaintext. A secure connection doesn’t happen until the website responds to your browser—a handshake, if you will. With DNS-over-HTTPS, a compatible browser sends your query to a compatible DNS server using an encrypted connection. This connection prevents eavesdroppers from viewing your browsing habits.

Free VPN vs. VPN Pro: What’s the difference?

Opera Software launched VPN Pro in May 2022. In a nutshell, with VPN Pro , you get full device-wide coverage on six devices, a network with 3,000+ servers, 30+ unique locations, two-factor authentication, and live chat support. Here’s a chart showing what you get with both services:

Does Incognito Mode hide you from Google and other services?

No, Chrome’s Incognito Mode feature doesn’t completely protect you. It’s only meant to hide your activities from other people using the same device and browser. Google even confirmed in a court filing in March 2021 that users are not “invisible” when they open an Incognito Mode window. The company said user activity might be visible to websites and third-party analytics and ads.

What happened to Safari for Windows?

Safari 5.1.7 was the last version released on Windows. While you can find links to download the browser, Apple discontinued Windows support in 2012. We do not recommend this browser for Windows users due to the lack of updates and customer support.

What happened to Internet Explorer?

Microsoft retired Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, but it still lives on in Microsoft Edge as IE Mode. To enable it for legacy websites, click the Settings and more button in the top right corner of Microsoft Edge, followed by Settings > Default browser > Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode . Select Allow on the drop-down menu to enable IE Mode.
