Stellaris Star Trek total conversion mod launches impressive update
The still-in-alpha New Horizons adds to its already long list of features.
When we first covered G-Man's New Horizons Star Trek mod last year, the Stellaris total conversion boasted an impressive 38 pre-scripted races with canon starting positions, and five playable factions and their ships, among a host of other neat mechanics and features. It's now dropped its Alpha 0.9 update which lifts that number of races above 50, and adds a load of new ships and weapons to boot.
In preparation of its eventual Beta 0.1 stage, Alpha 0.9 also introduces new mechanics which allow players to customise their ships, spaceports and empires; while also adding re-designed edict and policy trees, an overhauled ground combat system, and larger star bases. Of the exhaustive list , this particular addition sounds great:
"More Espionage! As the federation grows stronger, the secret order of the Romulan Tal Shiar plans its downfall… a new espionage and sabotage mechanic has been developed, allowing the Romulans to do harm to their enemies from afar. Will you destroy their fleets? Or go after their infrastructure? Of course, the Tal Shiar are not the only organization… and the Obsidian Order is about to teach those pointy-ears how it’s done."
Here's YouTube person Lyellin2 putting the latest iteration of New Horizons through its paces:

Top 15 Best Stellaris Mods You Must Use
Check out this list of some of the best mods for Stellaris 2.3 as of right now.
This includes total conversions, overhauls to basically everything, planet to space defenses, new ship classes, better rebellions, epic space battles and even superweapons capable of destroying entire star systems.
While this is by no means a comprehensive list, it does give you an excellent idea of where to start your journey into the world of Stellaris modding.
15. More Events Mod (MEM)
This mod is rather self-explanatory in what it does: it adds more events. The main purpose is to give you more potential action and story-focused events that you can uncover and give your game more flavor and depth by allowing the story of your empire to take some much more unexpected and dramatic turns as the game progresses.
Why you should use this mod
- It adds much more dynamic, branching content.
- It fleshes out the mid-game, helping with the drought of content in the middle of a campaign.
- It adds a variety of new events directly related to who your neighbors are and how you want to interact with them which can end in many different ways.

14.” Better Diplomacy: Realistic Opinions”
This mod makes the way the AI empires view you much more interesting as it now considers many more things. The AI will now care about what your stance is towards refugees, your first contact protocol, and even what traditions and civics you take in the unity tree. Before, the AI didn’t care about much beyond border tension, “have you committed genocide lately?”, and “Are you a xenophobe”.
- It makes your diplomatic relations with AI empires much more dynamic since they care about a lot more things than they used to.
- Your civics and ascension perks mean more than just some buffs and if you pick an aggressive one, the AI cares that you have effectively started gearing your entire society towards mass interstellar conquest.
- Your internal politics now affect your relationships with your neighbors rather than just your empire alone.

13. Improved Space Battles [Balance]
Improved Space Battles (or ISBS as it is sometimes referred to) is a gigantic overhaul of the naval combat in Stellaris. The primary changes are to speed up the midgame and encourage strategic wars. Currently Stellaris wars in the early and midgame are very rarely strategic wars to seize a handful of systems and most wars require you to utterly destroy an enemy fleet since they can just zoom past your defenses as the technology to lock down systems with stations is usually not unlocked at that point.
- Epic endgame battles complete with massive super-capital ships and system killer doomsday weapons.
- Combat speed of all ships has been decreased so the range of your weapons now matters a lot more than how fast your ships move.
- Endgame Crises have been given SIGNIFICANT buffs, now present a real challenge and will no longer just roll over and present you with their soft underbelly the moment you first attack.
12. Overharvest - Unsustainable Development
This mod helps with a rather immersion-breaking aspect of the core game: namely the fact that it feels like you don’t have to care about the environment of your colonies or worry about the consequences of your exploitation. With this mod, you are presented with a choice for how to approach resource management on your worlds. You can live in balance with nature but get fewer resources, exploit a little bit and slowly use the world up or strip mine the world of all its resources and empty it of anything of value.
- Adds an extra dimension to managing your colonies, forcing you to choose between a short-term gain of resources and long-term settlement.
- You can strip-mine entire worlds while your citizens are living on them.
- Adds in management of the environment as an additional element for you to care about in the game.
11. Crowded World (2.3)
This mod adds a new civic to empire creation which allows you to start on a homeworld suffering from overpopulation issues. This puts you in an interesting position as you will have to overcome early population issues before you can reap the benefits that come from starting with an early advantage in population. It allows you to simulate a situation that is quite likely to be the reason for many civilizations starting to explore the stars: they have too many people and not enough space.
- Start on an overpopulated homeworld.
- Allows you to simulate an extremely plausible cause of early interstellar exploration and expansion in Stellaris through actual in-game mechanics.
- Make Stellaris more like The Expanse via overpopulation.
10. Supernovae - Cosmic Fury
This mod is another one where the name is pretty descriptive. It adds stars to Stellaris which are going to go supernova after a certain amount of time. If you want some extra challenge, the mod will even allow you to start in a system with a dying star and desperately scramble to colonize another planet before your home system’s star explodes and takes your entire civilization with you.
- You can start on a planet orbiting a dying star, desperately trying to colonize another planet and evacuate your people before it is too late.
- Stars can explode, destroying an entire system.
- The supernova mechanic can create some amazing dynamic storylines where you colonize a planet and your people have lived there for generations but then the world’s star begins going supernova and you have to frantically evacuate it to try and save as many lives as possible.
9. The Zenith of Fallen Empires 2.0
This mod introduces the possibility for the player and the various AI empires to become Awakened Empires through specialized technologies. This allows the player to use technologies that were previously exclusive to Fallen Empires or players that looted their wrecked ships as well as doing a fallen empire style galactic conquest where you can force normal empires to become your subject.
- You can become an Awakened Empire during your campaign by researching the correct technology.
- Players and normal AI empires can now use Fallen/Awakened Empire technologies without needing to go to war with one of these empires and loot their wreckage.
- You can now experience the War in Heaven from the perspective of an Awakened Empire and force those “ignorant children” that are the normal empires to bow to your greatness.
8. Dynamic Political Events
So, have you ever got the feeling, in Stellaris, that your ethics and the ethics of your population don’t do much of anything or that your inter-empire politics are irrelevant? Well, you aren’t alone because Dynamic Political events exist to do something about that very issue. This mod adds a massive number of multi-event chains that helps to make your empire’s internal politics more lifelike and dynamic.
- Adds a massive number of events covering everything from faction demands and integrating alien species into your empire to various scandals involving your leaders and events where a cult begins to worship your ruler as a living god.
- Your internal politics matter now.
- Your empire’s population means more to you than just a list of numbers now.
7. Real Space 3.3
This mod makes some rather nice additions to the graphics and system variety. This includes new types of stars, more variation in star type, more realistic planetary orbits, and over 100 new star systems. Also, it adds several new options for your species’ home system and increases the scale of the various planets and systems.
- Adds a variety of more diverse and atmospheric scenery to the galaxy to make your galaxies more interesting to explore.
- Adds several new skins for Gas Planets to the game so there is more variety in the appearance of gas giants and there aren’t just 2 or 3 of this type of planet across the galaxy.
- Adds hundreds of new real star systems that can appear in the game now.
6. Potent Rebellions 2.3
A common complaint levied against Stellaris by plenty of the player base is that rebellions are kind of crap. They generally can’t succeed against the player unless they get stupidly lucky. Rebellions can succeed against the AI a decent amount but they don’t generally go anywhere and just sort of sputter out and, after a successful uprising in a single system, they just sit in their one system until they get conquered.
- It adds some espionage mechanics to allow both the player and the various AI empires to sow unrest on another empire’s worlds or support newly independent rebels.
- The chances of specific pops rebelling are now much more circumstantial and their reason for the rebellion is more than just “We are very unhappy so we revolt now”.
- Rebellions can experience a cascade effect where if one planet succeeds in revolting from an empire, any other planets in that empire with a lot of unrest have the potential to revolt as well.
5. New Ship Classes
The latest iteration of a mod that’s been around for as long as I’ve been installing mods in Stellaris, New Ship Classes expands the roster of classes available to your fleet. The best part, however, is that it does this in such an excellent way that the classes fit seamlessly into the existing design roster of ship classes from the vanilla game. These ship classes are largely based or real-life classes of warships which could quite likely make the transition to space warfare and they fit in the “slot” they find themselves inserted into quite nicely.
- It vastly overhauls the ship classes to include several new types of ships capable of filling many different roles.
- Fix that annoying issue where you would have to shoehorn a battleship into the role of “Carrier” rather than having a ship that functions as a mobile launch platform for strike craft, as carriers are supposed to.
- Overhaul to ship combat behavior to allow for much more variety in how ships behave in battle.
4. More AI Personalities
The personality and behavior of the various AI empires in Stellaris can be rather interesting and enjoyable for the first few playthroughs but, after a while, they can get rather boring. Enter More AI Personalities which adds several different personality types that the AI can spawn with. These personalities include quite a few things you would probably never have thought of such as insane warmongers who go to war because they find it fun, the Space Viet Cong and the Empire from the Elder Scrolls series in space (just to name a few).
- It adds more variety to the behavior of the various AI empires that will spawn in your games.
- Adds some extra flavor to the game’s narrative since you can now find many more types of empires than in vanilla.
- Adds some amusing moments when you discover a bunch of Carefree Hippies just invaded those Quiet Cultists and you think “maybe those cultists weren’t so harmful after all”.
3. At War: Planetary Cannons
Have you ever been playing Stellaris and found yourself laying siege to a planet or had one of your planets under siege and wondered why the planet’s defenders never built any kind of anti-starship defenses on the surface like almost every science fiction universe ever depicts? If you have, then this mod is for you. It adds a new building unlocked by certain technologies which will fire at any ships in orbit with a chance to destroy its target every time it fires.
- More flexibility in terms of options for planetary defense.
- Attacking planets is an actual threat to your fleet rather than just a roadblock.
- With proper preparations and a bit of luck, it is now possible for planets to defeat smaller fleets without having to wait for reinforcements to save them.
2. AlphaMod 2.3
AlphaMod is a truly enormous overhaul mod for Stellaris which changes pretty much everything that can be changed in the game and then some. It overhauls the way the economy works, introduces an entirely new currency system alongside energy, alters which planetary bodies can be colonized and much more besides. Considering the gigantic amount of content provided by AlphaMod, I would say it is not an exaggeration to describe it as a free expansion rather than simply a mod.
- It massively expands on the game’s default economic and production system, introducing a wide variety of new resources such as natural fuels, biomass, ice, rare metals, and many more with a variety of different uses.
- It introduces a massive number of new empire-wide policies that cover everything from your law enforcement policy and private sector regulations on business to the state policy on unions and religion.
- Massively expands the district and jobs system, allowing for a much wider variety of planetary customization.
1. Star Trek: New Horizons
Star Trek New Horizons is, without a doubt, the best total conversion mod for Stellaris. Honestly, mod or not, I think this might be the best Star Trek strategy game ever made. The mod has a massive number of canon Star Trek species, maps, and events from a truly epic scope.
- Lets you follow the story of the formation of the Federation and go from being a loose alliance of different interstellar powers to a single state then grow from there and negotiate new empires into joining the Federation.
- Alternate Star Trek Mirror Universe maps with the chosen empire replaced with their mirror universe counterpart.
- Special mechanics and features for each faction to promote a unique style of play for each different empire such as unrest when at peace for too long as the Klingons and a unique assimilation mechanic as the Borg.

'New Horizons' mod for Stellaris brings Star Trek back to 4-x gaming
Here's something that I've never done before: a review of a game mod! I don't play mods very often. When I play games, I usually want to play the game that the creators created in order to get a feel for what their intent might have been. For some of the more sandboxy PC games that I play (like Cities: Skylines or the like), I might try some small mods.
For this one instance, however, I'm making an exception because this particular mod fills a very specific niche desire for me that has gone unfulfilled for around 15 or 20 years. The "New Horizons" mod for Stellaris is finally allowing me to play a full 4-x strategy game set in the Star Trek universe. I haven't been able to do that since Star Trek: Birth of the Federation , developed by Microprose for Windows 98!
Yes, there have been other Star Trek mods for other games in the past, and there's even some community projects to create spiritual successors to Birth of the Federation (such as Star Trek: Supremacy ). The problem is that I've yet to ever see one of these get finished . "New Horizons" for Stellaris is still a work-in-progress, but it is mostly functionally complete and fairly robust. Since Birth of the Federation holds such a special place in my heart, I'm going to take a stab at reviewing "New Horizons" and see how it compares to my personal favorite [official] Star Trek game of all time.
Built on the back of Stellaris
"New Horizons" is, of course, a mod for the PC game Stellaris (developed and published by Paradox). Because of this, it takes advantage of most of Stellaris ' strengths, but it is also hamstrung by many of Stellaris ' faults.
"New Horizons" makes excellent use of the massive size and scale of Stellaris ' maps by featuring a detailed recreation of the canon Star Trek galaxy, and including a surprisingly exhaustive roster of Star Trek races and factions -- all of whom are playable. Yes, of course, the big players like the Federation, the Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, Ferengi, Dominion, and Borg are all here. As are all the expected ancillary empires like the Gorn, Tholians, Orions, and so forth.
It doesn't end there, though. This mod also features a crap-ton of "aliens of the week" as fully-featured, playable empires. They aren't "minor races" like what we had in Birth of the Federation or the city states of Civilization V or VI . They don't just have one planet and a handful of ships just waiting for a "major faction" to conquer or absorb them. The obvious choices like the Vulcans, Andorians, Bajorans, are all there. The game also features empires like the Sheliak, Anticans, Selay, Caitian, Cheron, Dosi, Hirogen, Kazon, Krenim, Kelpian, and more! If you have a favorite space-facing civilization from any episode of Star Trek (including Gamma Quadrant aliens from DS9 and Delta Quadrant aliens from Voyager ), there is a very good chance that it's a playable faction in "New Horizons".
"New Horizons" retains the sense of exploration and discovery that Stellaris is so good at recreating. Your science ships will go out and survey planets, explore anomalies, complete quests, and meet new civilizations just like they do in the base Stellaris campaigns. I wish there were a map option that put certain major planets and empires in the canonical relative position, but then would randomize the content of the galaxy between them. This would maintain a lot of the politics of Star Trek , while still providing some mystery in repeat playthroughs.
With the galaxy so crammed with factions, the map fills up very quickly, and diplomatic contact-sharing will usually result in most of the galaxy being uncovered very early. For example, contact-sharing allowed the Federation in the game to make contact with (and reveal the territory of) Delta Quadrant races before the year 2200 (between the events of Enterprise and Original Series ). This happens despite the fact that ships move much slower than in the base Stellaris game, so your science ships can't get very far. Perhaps the ability to share diplomatic contact should be removed or locked behind some mid-game technology?
2.0 doesn't entirely ruin it!
One of the best things about the mod is that it retains the original warp drive mechanics that were stripped out by Stellaris 2.0! Other changes do have an effect on "New Horizons", though. One 2.0 change that is incorporated into the mod is the new Starbase and border mechanics that require a Starbase to be constructed over every single star in order to claim territory. Yeah sure, the original territory mechanic was a bit obtuse and resulted in some ugly borders, but I preferred it overall because it made Starbases feel like much more significant installations. Plus, I liked being able to build my Starbases over planets instead of the stars.
If you don't like the 2.0 changes, you can revert to a 1.9 version. This is a bit more complicated and involved than reverting the core game by itself. You also need older mod packages for "New Horizons". I was able to get it to run, but the U.I. mods wouldn't work with 1.9, and I had to disable them all.
Paradox is infamous for making massive revisions to their games that change mechanics as well as game balance, and which sometimes render certain play-styles unplayable. Unless the modders explicitly undo such revisions (or you can find another mod that undoes the revision), you're stuck with either having to revert to a previous version of the game (and possibly find an earlier version of the mod that is compatible with it), or just live with whatever annoying changes the Paradox devs make.
One such change that frustrated me is the apparent removal of the "Liberation" casus belli. This (as far as I can tell) makes it impossible for peaceful or democratic factions (such as the Federation) to further expand once the map is filled-in during the mid-game, unless a rival declares war on them. Now, I can't liberate allies that are conquered or act as a "galactic police", trying to maintain a balance of power. It's just one of many changes that Paradox makes to its games that just completely baffles me.
"New Horizons" is hamstrung by some of Stellaris ' annoying diplomacy and management mechanics. Factions generally have very polarized opinions of each other. They either like you and are willing to give you anything you ask for, or they don't like you and refuse almost any deal you offer them. You can't co-ordinate military actions or ask for allies to send fleets to specific positions.
You also still can't negotiate for open borders or to allow passage for your Science ships, which means that science ships can still get stranded behind foreign borders or locked out of completing quests that appear in unfriendly territory, with no way to negotiate for access.
Science ships themselves still can't explore systems unless they have a scientist assigned to them, which means there's not much reason to not just go ahead and survey. There's also still a hard line between science ships and military fleets, meaning that your fleets of starships have absolutely nothing to do when you aren't at war. You can't send them off to explore or survey new worlds. I really wish Stellaris would allow you to use military ships and science ships without scientists to explore new worlds, and only require the scientist for surveying and research.
Internal politics can also be annoying. Unrest is very problematic for certain empires, and frequent elections can still result in your experienced leaders and scientists suddenly vanishing in order to be your faction's leader.
Perhaps the biggest problem, however, is the sometimes-frustrating lack of control. You still have no control over combat, have very little (if any) influence over your espionage activities, and technologies that you want can become buried under randomized selections. All this is still true in "New Horizons".
The Star Trek skin
Anyway, enough re-reviewing of Stellaris (for my full opinions on Stellaris , check out my review ). So what does "New Horizons" actually bring to the table?
Well, the most obvious thing is going to be all the ships. As you progress through the eras, you'll unlock the ability to build a number of Star Trek ships. The Federation's initial science ship, for instance, is modeled after the Franklin from Star Trek: Beyond , a Patrol Frigate is based on an early Earth ship depicted in the title sequence of Star Trek: Enterprise , the Destroyer is based on the NX-01 model, and so forth. As you progress through the eras, these ships will transition into period-specific counterparts. As you approach an Original Series level of technology, the NX-01 Destroyer will be revised into a custom ship that resembles an Original Series equivalent of the Miranda class Reliant. Eventually, you'll get Constitution Class Cruisers and then eventually Galaxy class ones, with Miranda and Excelsior class vessels filling in the lighter ship roles.
Other factions will have similar period-specific ships, though the lack of continuity for other races during all the eras of Star Trek means that the designers got to take a lot of artistic license. For example, what would a TOS era Ferengi or Cardassian cruiser look like? Well, the developers don't actually have an answer to that one yet, but they plan to add era-specific ships for more factions in the future. Even familiar races like the Klingons and Romulans have a lot of original ship designs, such as the double-decker Enterprise -era Romulan cruisers that look like a hybrid of the TOS Bird of Prey and the TNG Warbird, by way of simply stacking two birds of prey on top of each other.
The writers even created a little story explaining why Romulan ships in Enterprise era have the familiar green color and curves of TNG -era Romulan designs, but they switch over to the white aesthetics of the Original Series. Oh Star Trek fans, always making up convoluted ad hoc explanations for retro-active continuity... How charming.
There's also a lot of ship designs for minor races such as the Vulcans, Andorians, Kazon, and so forth. Only some minor factions have unique ships. A lot of the rest of the races use one of a handful of generic-looking ship models. Regardless, the amount of content that was created for this mod is pretty impressive, and everything that I've seen looks quite good. There are some original designs that I don't particularly care for (the aforementioned Enterprise -era Romulan Cruiser for example), but everything looks well-made, and the mod as a whole is very well-polished.
Each faction also has its own unique combination of Tradition trees to give them a little more flavor and varying playstyles. I'm not sure if these are just re-purposed versions of the base game's various Tradition trees, or if the mod designers created new trees. For example, the Federation has trees for exploration, scientific discovery, colonization, diplomacy, and more. The Cardassians, on the other hand, have trees focused around military conquest, the subjugation and enslavement of other races, industry, intelligence networks, and so on.
Starting to feel "Episodic"
The modders have even redesigned some of the familiar events from Stellaris and given them a Star Trek overhaul. Whole new events have been added that provide situations based on episodes of the show, complete with several stages of choices. In many cases, these events can be trivially easy to resolve if you're even remotely familiar with the source material. I know how to escape the Pakled's "Samaritan Snare", for instance. But choosing to resolve these events in different ways can sometimes lead to surprising and creative surprises.
Familiar events and situations are also scripted to happen at certain times or under certain conditions. The formation of the Federation, for instance, is scripted to happen. Unfortunately, it happens rather quickly in the game and without any real active involvement from the respective factions. This means that there's never any sense of there being conflict between the Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites. If you start the game as the Romulans, for instance, there's little point in trying to use the Tal'shiar to sabotage relations between Earth, Vulcan, and Andor, because they're going to form the Federation no matter what.
My playthrough of the Federation on the Milky Way story campaign even had me dealing with the whale probe from The Voyage Home , the Planet Eater from "The Doomsday Machine", the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole, and many other significant events in Trek history. I even managed to get the original [refit] Enterprise blown up by Klingons. I don't know if all these events happen in the procedurally-generated maps, or if they are limited to the Milky Way story campaign. Of course, the focus on humanity and the Federation within the Star Trek franchise means that your story event mileage may vary depending on the faction that you play.
The Birth of the Federation successor that I've been waiting 20 years for?
"New Horizons" also excels in other areas of production. There's optional mods that you can use to swap out the U.I. to look like Federation LCARS, or Klingon, Romulan, Dominion, Cardassian, or Borg displays. Of course, you have to exit the game and enable the specific U.I. mod that you want.
The soundtrack is an exceptionally-arranged collection of musical medleys from all the Star Trek series and some of the movies that really does a fantastic job of getting the nostalgia juices flowing. It even includes the reboot movie's theme (which I actually quite like) and an arrangement of Picard's "Inner Light" flute solo . Though it does include an arrangement from The Wrath of Khan / Search for Spock , I've yet to pick up any arrangements from The Undiscovered Country , which is my favorite Trek movie score (and favorite Trek film, in general).
It would also be cool if they could throw in some alternate tunes for wartime or battles. A mash-up of tunes like the " Amok Time " fight theme, " Balance of Terror " theme, " Doomsday Machine " theme, or other similarly-recognizable Trek tunes that aren't the theme songs from a series or movie would sound pretty cool backing up my epic space battles. The Star Trek VI overture would be an awesome war-time tune as well! At least throw the instantly-recognizable Klingon theme in there somewhere! Damn, Star Trek has always had some fantastic music...
When I'm in the mood for some Star Trek gaming, and I can't get two-to-four friends together for Star Trek: Ascendancy or Star Trek: Fleet Captains board games, then "New Horizons" will be my go-to game. I'd still like to see an actual licensed Star Trek 4-x video game, but mod or no, "New Horizons" seems to be the most complete and robust Trek video game experience available right now.
I just have to hope that Paradox (in their infinite wisdom) don't update Stellaris and bollock it all up.
WHAT I LIKE
- A 4-x game set in Star Trek universe!
- Leverages the built-in strengths of Stellaris base game
- Very content-rich, including era-specific ship designs for many races
- Large map supports an extensive roster of Star Trek races and factions
- Soundtrack is an exceptionally-arranged medley of Star Trek themes
- Scripted events that replicate events or episodes from the series
- Maintains the warp drive mechanics from the original Stellaris release
WHAT I DON'T LIKE
- Hamstrung by some of Stellaris ' more annoying features
- Many scripted events are trivially resolved if you've seen the source material
- Does not do justice to the Romulan cloaking device
- Glitches involving diplomacy, ship designs, ship ugrades, and more
- Includes anachronistic content from the reboot movies and ST: Discovery
FINAL GRADE: B+

Best Stellaris mods
Sirius business
You. Hey you. Come here. Closer. You look like someone interested in unorthodox game updates? What are you looking for? Stellaris ? Right, right. Shhh. Keep walking. You don’t know me. See that guy up there, with the three arms and glowing eyes? Tell him you’re here for Stellaris mods. He’ll hook you up with some prime grand strategy space gear. We’re talking total conversions, quality of life updates... we’ve even got some aggressive new AI. Go on, you’ll like it...
And that’s how I was introduced to the Stellaris mod scene.
It's almost too big to comprehend. Several thousand files on the Steam workshop. Stories, fixes, races, and so much more. People have animated the eyebrows of the most meagre Star Trek races for your strategic fun. They've created solar system sized weapons to make the endgame more of challenge. You can mod absolutely everything about Stellaris, so let's go.
How to mod Stellaris
We’re dealing with the Steam workshop for all of these mods, so you just click and download. Stellaris has a mod manager built into the launcher that lets you enable or disable mods, and you can also create sets of mods that’ll launch together. So you can download as many mods as your hard-drive can suffer, then turn them into specific sets to play with.
UI Overhaul Dynamic by Orrie
Stellaris is surprisingly tough to play at higher resolutions. The UI struggles to adapt, with windows like squat portholes that you squint through to see the information. UI Overhaul Dynamic is a group of mods that aims to fix that.
The main interface modifier adapts things to the player’s resolution, increasing the width and height of all the windows. You get bigger planet overviews, a new ship designer that allows for more ship sections in the window, and more. The whole flow of information changes with the new UI, and there are 18 add-ons that will let you tweak things. The add-ons will let you increase your building slots, change the font, remove backgrounds, and more. A must-have mod.

Planetary Diversity by Gatekeeper
The universe is a big place, but it could be more interesting, which is where Planetary Diversity works its terraforming magic. The mod adds 43 new planets to Stellaris, with 25 regular types, 12 rare worlds, and six uninhabitable additions.
There are sub-categories of worlds mixed into the game’s bubbling brew, now, each with custom artwork. At the beginning of each game, every world will be rerolled into a sub-category of the base world. Dry worlds will become Arid or Prairies. Cold worlds can become Tundras or a mushroom-based Mycelium planet. Rarer planets will spawn, too. Rogue Worlds are planets that have been knocked through space like a pool ball and ended up orbiting a black hole. Their geothermal activity allowed life to cling to it, which you can take advantage of for mining and energy production.
There are several add-ons as well, with more out-there additions or reworked mechanics. It’s an essential upgrade if you want more vibrant solar systems.

More Events Mod by Malthus
As the mid-to-end game sags a little, when you’ve seen most of the map and are dealing with the less fun parts of keeping an empire running, More Events Mod will keep things interesting.
Lots of little twists will come at you. Interesting little nuggets of Trekky sci-fi, like the discovery of Precursor ruins on settled planets and in owned space or finding a war machine from a race of bastards. Nothing too consuming. Just stories that will flesh out the game and keep you intrigued all the way to the heat death of the universe.

Guilli's Planet Modifiers and Features by Gulliman
If you want more of that sci-fi sense of wonder in your game, Guilli's Planet Modifiers and Features is a supernova of discovery.
It makes exploration more exciting. With over 300 unique modifiers for planets and the rest of the worlds, over 100 new planetary features, and a similar number of events, this is perfect if you feel like you’ve seen everything in the chunky Stellaris lore book. A few clicks into a new game and you could be staring at a machine world core and pondering just what to do with it.
Additional events can trigger after you’ve discovered and colonised worlds, setting off quest chains that draw from your own ethical choices. There are loads more, and it's a great upgrade to the base game.

Real Space 3.6 by Annatar
Do you want more facts in your science fiction? Real Space 3.6 adds a whole heap of realistic star systems to the galaxy generation.
As you click through a newly generated galaxy, you’ll discover some stunning additions to the game, like a proto-star sat in a plane of galactic gases, spitting out burning matter at its poles. The mod also seeks to rescale the map, change orbits, and more. You can even set-up the game to resemble Sol and its closest neighbours.
And it has a number of add-ons , adding things like space weather and star clusters. It’s the perfect mod if you’re a bit of a stargazer.

Beautiful Universe 2.0 by Avelium
If you want to augment real space, then Beautiful Universe 2.0 is a great way to go. It’s a curated selecting of spectacular skyboxes, using NASA imagery, Eve Online backdrops, and digital art to craft a gorgeous galactic canvas. Use this file to combine both mods.
Download Beautiful Universe2.0
Realistic Camera by Kelstr
If you’ve modded the graphics, you might as well mod the camera. Realistic Camera is a simple addition to the game that will give you free camera movement in both the galaxy and the system view. You can get as close as you like to the roiling suns and drifting nebulae. Just don’t melt.

Gigastructural Engineering by Elowiny
Of course, Stellaris is about more than just gorgeous starscapes. Your expansion as a space race will have a large impact on the galaxy, and Gigastructural Engineering will help make it more interesting.
It expands on the megastructures of the game, adding 40 more with several effects. There are system-sized computers and star-sized particle accelerators. As you can expect, they’re huge resource sinks that provide large bonuses to your empire. I love the idea of the Nicoll-Dyson beam: it eats up all the planets in any system it’s built-in, but you get to use a star’s entire output to power a system-destroying laser.

Aggressive Crisis Engine by OldEnt
There are a number of Stellaris AI mods. This one aims to “fix” the crisis endgame state by making it far more aggressive.
It’s not just a numbers game. ACEMOD adds custom pathfinding, aggressive fleets, tactical recalls, and new tech to make the all-consuming crisis something to take seriously. Every empire is at risk from the Contingency, Prethoryn Scourge, Unbidden, Aberrant or Vehement’s desire to rid the galaxy of all life. Their fleets will not stop, each has a colossal ship (which can be toggled) to wreck whole planets. It sounds like the most painful thing you can do to yourself, but if you have a few thousand hours of stellar empire management under your belt, it’s time for a challenge.

ST New Horizons by G-Man
All of Star Trek, from a few years before the first Enterprise, all the way out into the uncharted territory of the 2400s, is in ST New Horizons. It will allow players to play on crafted canonical maps, fly the famous ships, meet new civilisations, and build an empire from while dealing with over 90 Star Trek races.
This is an astonishing piece of work. Grab the Borg and start threatening the existence of all life, pick the Bajorans and rail against the uncaring universe. You’ll have over 450 ships, race specific mechanics, megastructures drawn from every corner of Trek canon. Life as a Federation colony will be entirely different to the nomadic Hirogens. And you can do it with an LCARS UI, though I found it a bit distracting and soon swapped back to regular one.
Given that there’s no modern Star Trek equivalent game, this is by far the best way to build your own Federation and fight the Ferengi.

Description of alphamod draws attention to how it updates regularly. But the last update was more than 2 years before the last update of this article.
Given it contains another mod whose functionality became part of the core game ages ago and whose own surgery said they would not continue updating it, it seems obvious this article was written years ago and is just being recycled each year.
Make it properly relevant for the current time or let it rest in peace please.
