About Galveston Red Snapper Fishing Trips
This is a special trip and is only offered during the Red Snapper season (typically June to July), we don’t offer it any other time of year. The Galveston Red Snapper fishing trip combines the best of a half day deep sea fishing trip for up to 6 people per boat, more fishing time, and goes further offshore to increase chances of catching big red snapper (often up to 20 pounds!).
Galveston Red Snapper fishing is world-class, come try it for yourself! This is an awesome trip to catch one of the most popular, hard fighting, and delicious fish swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. While we are out there, we also have the chance at catching other species encountered during a day of deep sea fishing as well. The season for red snapper can vary, but traditionally starts on June 1 every year and dates fill up fast. Our online bookings have availability for trips in real-time as well, we recommend booking ahead to ensure your preferred date.
If this is your first red snapper fishing experience; don’t worry, free fishing lessons are included!!!
We also provide all of the rods and reels, fishing tackle and bait for the trip, there’s no fuel surcharge, and we also include fish cleaning! All you’ll need are snacks, drinks (no glass), and a fishing license. We have a cooler on board to put drinks and snacks in, but feel free to bring your cooler as well. Remember that your captain and crew work hard to ensure that you have a great experience on your deep sea fishing experience, you can show them your appreciation with a 15-20% tip and a 5-star review online. Both are greatly appreciated.
During your red snapper deep sea fishing experience, we typically try to do a combination of bottom fishing, trolling, drift fishing, and jigging. This gives us the opportunity to encounter a wider variety of fish species during your trip. Depending on the weather and conditions of the day, we may be limited to trolling and bottom fishing– which are typically most productive anyways.
Our Galveston red snapper fishing is a type of deep sea fishing trip and is a 8-9 hour trip, we are usually fishing within 60 miles of Galveston on a variety of different types of structures. We do not always fish oil and gas platforms, but also fish on sunken wrecks, natural bottom, scattered rocks, and other features too. Common species can include red snapper, king mackerel, spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, sharks, red drum, sheepshead, cobia, mahi mahi, tripletail, and others. The length of the trip is measured from dock to dock and starts at the scheduled time for the trip. We try our best to stay on time, as there are often multiple groups scheduled during the day to go fishing.

FAQs About Galveston Red Snapper Fishing
This typically depends on the type of trip booked and the time of year for the trip. To ensure a healthy population, red snapper are managed under a season that is set every year by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Traditionally, the season opens on June 1st and goes through the end of July. Outside of this time, we can still catch red snapper—but we cannot keep them.
Depending on the time of year, you may also catch King Mackerel, Dorado or Mahi Mahi, Sharks, mangrove snapper, amberjacks, wahoo, blacken tuna, cobia or ling, sailfish and many other species. Some fish are more common than others and may be further offshore depending on the time of year or weather, but you never know what you’ll catch on a Galveston deep sea fishing trip.
Depending on the type of trips and the weather for the day, this can often vary. The longer you have for your deep sea fishing trip, the better the opportunity for catching big red snapper and other species as well.
To ensure a healthy population, red snapper are managed under a season that is set every year by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Traditionally, the season opens on June 1st and goes through the end of July.
Outside of this time, we can still catch red snapper—but we cannot keep them. We are happy to offer catch and release trips for red snapper if you’re interested as well.
Yes, anyone over the age of 17 is required by law to have a valid Texas saltwater fishing license. There are a number of options for licenses available, but we recommend a one-day license for most cases. You can purchase the licenses online or in person at Academy, Wal-Mart, or most any sporting goods store. Make sure when you purchase the license, it does include the oversized red drum tag on the license for any inshore or nearshore trip if you would like to keep a big Redfish on the trip.
We provide all the rods and reels, tackle and bait for the trip. Fuel is also included in the price of the trip. We are happy to provide fish cleaning services as well, especially with a generous gratuity of 15-25% for your trip.

Galveston Texas Red Snapper Fishing
Is Galveston red snapper fishing with Texas Deep Sea Fishing Charters the best – well yes, because we manage our permits and license such that, on our boat, you may fish for and keep red snapper 24/7 everyday of the year.
Texas snapper fishing in Galveston as well as waters off of Freeport Texas has been remarkably good even fantastic recently. The red snapper has made a nice rebound in the past 10 years, or as many might say the snapper were always there the fisheries management people just couldn't count. Either way, the red snapper seems to be
quite plentiful with numbers increasing each year. And just in time to find the many new artificial reefs that have recently been deployed out of all major Texas Ports.
This paragraph may seem complicated, but all you really need to know is red snapper fishing with Texas Deep Sea Fishing Charters is 365 days per year. We fish for snapper in both Texas state waters and federal waters. Texas has no snapper season and we fish Texas in cooler months for a bag limit of 4 fish per person and a minimum length of 15 inches. The Feds have an annual
snapper season, recently June 1 thru late July where we fish for a limit of 2 fish and a minimum length of 16 inches. Texas waters snapper fishing is best when the waters cool between October and April and in recent years we are landing numerous snapper limits with some sow snapper up to 20 lbs in Texas waters. Since summer snapper fishing in Federal waters is far better than Texas waters, we relocate our Federal reef fish permit onto the boat and fish Federal waters in the summer. And, with our Federal Pelagic permit, the Federal
waters snapper trips frequently include catches of other snapper species as well as king mackerel, ling, mahi mahi and /or shark.
The NMFS website provides an extensive history of red snapper fishing https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/history-management-gulf-mexico-red-snapper check it out. Basically red snapper fishing off of Galveston Texas as well as Freeport TX has well over a 100 year history and remained unregulated until the 1980s when depletion of the snapper stock was first observed. In the 80s and 90s catch and length limits were inposed as well as

requiring shrimpers to install gear on their nets that would release juvenile snapper. These measures improved the stock but came up short of providing protection required to return the stock to sustainable levels. So in 2005 the NMFS took some extreme measures to reduce snapper mortality. First they cut commercial and recreational quotas by 45%, they implemented a recreational red snapper fishing season in Federal waters, which created extensive controversy especially when it resulted in a season that was less than 1 week. Then the Feds published a “rule” stating Federally permitted

charters boats could not retain red snapper, even in Texas waters, when the federal season was close. Did these measure get the job done or were the red snapper always plentiful? You decide, But in any case, a third party group performed a Gulf red snapper count and published the results in 2020. They found that the red snapper stocks were at least twice as much as previously report by the NMFS and Gulf Council. The fisheries management organizations appear to have accepted this much larger stock count and we expect some big changes – all positive - in the near future. Looks like we will be enjoying Texas red snapper fishing 24/7 for some years to come

Let’s discuss the difference between State vs. Federal waters seasons. In the Gulf of Mexico, every state oversees the first nine nautical miles of sea. After that, you hit Federal waters. Texas Red Snapper Season 2023 State waters will be open throughout the year! Once a state reaches its quota, the season will be closed. Daily bag limits for Texas in state waters is 4 fish per person with a 15-inch minimum length. Federal Red Snapper season starts June 1st through August 25th. In federal waters, the bag limit is 2 fish per day per person with a 16-inch minimum length.
Like most species of fish, the bigger fish are found in deeper waters. Red Snapper are no exceptions. If you want to reel in a trophy fish, Federal waters will be your best place to fish. Red Snapper is generally found at 30 to 620 feet deep in the Gulf of Mexico. Although Red Snapper range all over the Caribbean and along the Atlantic Coast, they are more common and abundant in the Gulf of Mexico.
Red Snapper can grow to about 40 inches and weigh up to 50 pounds and live more than 50 years. The largest Red Snapper caught in Texas was a Cubera Snapper, which is the largest of the Snapper species weighing in at 137 pounds back on June 11, 2022. Known for their taste, there are more than one million recipes online for Red Snapper.
In 2021 Angler’s landed 10.3 million pounds of Red Snapper in the Gulf of Mexico according to NOAA fisheries. Harte Research Institute (HRI) led a project called the Great Red Snapper Count to determine how many Red Snapper were in the Gulf of Mexico. The project ran between 2017 and 2019. They concluded that there were 118 million Red Snapper swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. This is triple NOAA’s previous estimate that stood at 36 million. NOAA is analyzing HRI’s data and should be finished by 2023. The upcoming season could be impacted with positive changes.
In the late 80’s the Snapper population reached its lowest point. Through science and strict fishing regulations, the Snapper population has increased. People are reeling in bigger fish in water and places that have not been seen before. The best time to fish for Snapper is from May through the begging of September. The ideal water temperature for red snapper is 58 – 62°F. Red snapper bites well at dawn and at dusk. Low tides, high tides, full moon and new moon also play a factor when fishing for certain Snapper species. Red Snapper actively feeds at night providing overnight fishing trips a very productive night.
