Nainital, the hill resort town in the district of the same name, derives its name from the emerald, glassy, eye-shaped lake (tal) which the town is built around. The British Sugar trader, P. Baron, founded the town in the year 1841 and thank God that he did! There could not be a better getaway spot from the hustle and bustle of the cities. The moment you enter Nainital district, you step into a new, parallel world. With the best tourist places to visit in Nainital , the transition to scenic splendour of the likes of the place is a treat to the senses, a characteristic balming bliss of an experience that one can only understand through live experience. Nainital’s appeal comes across as no less than a dreamscape. The British elites had used the location as a retreat during the harsh summers of the Indian mainland once upon a time, and the tradition remains alive for native Indians, as well as our foreign guests to this day. With the changing climatic patterns ushering in harsher summers, Nainital as an easily accessible and highly affordable getaway vacation spot appears as no less than a prayer answered. Kedarnath etymologically translates to ‘Lord of the Field.’ It is a dainty town in Uttarakhand and is an ancient pilgrimage site. It is popular for the Kedarnath Temple, and according to mythology, it was built by the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata. The temperature in Kedarnath varies from -2 to 28 degrees Celsius. The best time to visit this hill station is either from May – June or September – October. If you are a pilgrim going to the site of Kedarnath Temple, then avoid visiting the temple during winters (November – March). Due to the decrease in temperature and heavy snowfall, the temple stays shut during this period. Since monsoons (July – August) come with the hindrance of landslides, visits to Kedarnath are avoided during this time as well. If you are visiting the Kedarnath temple, then you must visit the Bhairavnath Temple, located at a distance of 500 meters from there. The temple enshrines an incarnation of Lord Shiva, Lord Bhairav. Perched atop a hill, it offers a magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges with mesmerizing beauty. Apart from the Kedarnath Temple, there are several other tourist attractions in Kedarnath. One such attraction is Vasuki Tal, a lake built at an altitude of 4135 meters. It requires a moderate to difficult trekking experience and is a haven for trekkers. You must have heard of the Adwaita philosophy propounded by Sri Shankaracharya. Kedarnath has another historical shrine known as the Shankaracharya Samadhi. It is said that Sri Shankaracharya attained Nirvana at the age of 32 at this place. Sonprayag here is known to be the place where Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati. It is also the confluence of the rivers Mandakini and Basuki. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and frosty trees, Sonprayag is a cultural-historical site of attraction. Do keep in mind that Kedarnath is mostly cold throughout the year, so pack warm clothes.

Weather Conditions in Mussoorie

The Best Time to Visit Mussoorie

Mussoorie as a destination is the sum of many other beautiful locations around it. You will find some of these jewels as you head to Mussoorie. And some will be discovered over a piping hot cup of tea as you discuss your experiences with other travellers. Mussoorie has a unique distinction of having dramatically varying altitudes. This difference means quite a variance in weather conditions if you are visiting a spot just 20 km away in the same season.

The hill town of Mussoorie is situated on the ridge and slopes of Garhwal Himalayan Range in Dehradun district. It is up there with the soaring clouds at an elevation of 6,170 feet. Its highest peak Lal Tibba in Landour is at 7,460 feet, giving it an almost high-altitude berth. On the contrary, the capital of Dehradun just about crosses 2000 feet. This is an important factor that determines the best time to visit Mussoorie.

Climate in Mussoorie

The Subtropical Highland Climate ensures a similarity to coastal weather conditions. No extreme high or low temperatures make Mussoorie an ideal destination to visit in all seasons. Its diurnal temperature variation keeps Mussoorie at two ends of the thermal spectrum on the same day though.

Mussoorie in Winter (December to February)

Winter is not very severe in Mussoorie. The higher hills get snowfall, which makes it the best time to visit Mussoorie and see them covered in white glory. Almost all the tourist attractions remain open at this time. However, some roads and trek routes may be closed for a short time. They are cleared at regular intervals. If you plan well and have ample time at hand for minor rescheduling, then this is the time to enjoy Mussoorie at leisure. The average low temperature ranges from 2 °C to 4 °C. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Mussoorie was -6 °C but that happens quite rarely. The skies remain open and clear. Fog, mist and occasional thunderstorms occur at night but clear up as the sun climbs up.

Travel tips:

  • Carry heavy woollens and good shoes
  • Check road conditions and local announcements before venturing out
  • Keep an eye on fuel. Most petrol pumps close by 7 PM

Mussoorie in Summer (March to May)

Unlike its surrounding areas that reach a high of over 40°Celsius, Mussoorie maintains a pleasant average temperature of 24°Celsius. It seldom crosses 35°Celsius but when it does it is only for a very short while and isn’t unbearable.

March announces the onset of Spring. Doon valley is at its prettiest with flowers all around and a burst of new greens. The oak, pine and cedar forests are ready with inviting trek trails for the tourists that will soon arrive in large numbers. The spring-fed streams of Mussoorie are cooler than traditional watercourses. They add a zing to the water activities and sports. The Mussoorie hills and doon valley open up to a host of high-octane adventure pursuits including paragliding and ziplining.

Keep yourself well hydrated, especially children

  • Book your transport and accommodation well in advance as finding last minute options will be next to impossible
  • Adventure activities should be undertaken with certified trainers and tour operators only
  • There are ATMs but they may run dry due to heavy tourist flow. Carry cash and do not forget to bargain.

Mussoorie in Monsoon (June to September)

Annual average precipitation of Mussoorie is 2206 mm. Want to know what that mean for the tourists? It means that even though the capital city of Dehradun gets excess rainfall, the slopes of Mussoorie manage to remain slightly drier than the plains. Its calcareous and dolomite soils coupled with the gradient do not let water accumulate. Landslides are not that uncommon, but they are far and few. It’s true, not many tourists frequent Mussoorie at this time but if you were to venture out then you’d be rewarded with the most magnificent views. The hills and glens are lush green with mist hanging right within your reach. If you want to get away from the mad rush of the city for some soul-nourishing staycation, then this is the best time to visit Mussoorie.

  • Avoid parking on the Mall Road, as it is a ‘no parking zone’
  • Carry light woollens
  • Plan your Mussoorie sightseeing with inputs from the weather forecast agencies and local authorities. Some tourist attractions may be closed
  • Follow travel safety procedures and guidelines

Mussoorie in Autumn (October and November)

Autumn is not very pronounced in Mussoorie. The wildlife sanctuaries start opening up around this time and the decrease in humidity makes it easy for travellers to spend long hours outdoors. The tourist rush is on its way out and only the true explorers can be found on the winding roads of Mussoorie. Photography enthusiasts can still catch some flowers and gushing waterfalls before winter consumes them. This is the best time to go to Mussoorie if you are a budget traveller. You can capture the stunning vistas left behind by the monsoon in the crisp pre-winter weather with all the off-season packages still in effect.

  • Check and compare packages before booking them
  • Carry light cottons and keep yourself hydrated

Peak Season

The months between March and June are Mussoorie’s busiest months of the year. This is the time when you can experience Mussoorie at its colourful best. The hill station welcomes all its visitors and opens up all its delights that is accompanied by the perfect Mussoorie weather.

Shoulder Season

Winter is a beautiful time to be in Mussoorie. When the snow blankets the hill station, it seems to have stepped straight out of a postcard. Though you may find fellow tourists, it won’t be as crowded as the summer season.

The monsoon months, between July and September are the quietest ones. Though the beauty of Mussoorie in the rains is almost incomparable, the mountain rains sometimes make the roads impassable. The hill station settles down for the wait, preparing for its next tourist season.

Mussoorie In Winter (October - February)

Temperature - The winter temperatures in Mussoorie range between a chilling 4°C to a toasty 30°C. Though daylight temperatures are bearable, the nights can get very cold with the weather’s occasional sub-zero sojourns.

Weather - Mussoorie receives medium to heavy snowfall, especially during the months between December to February. Though the cold keeps a majority of tourists away, there are those who brave the cold to experience the magic of Mussoorie in winter. The days are not as cold as the nights and you can explore Mussoorie in comfort. But, as evening approaches, the mercury begins to dip. After a cold night, the crisp, cold mornings make the perfect setup for a brisk morning walk.

Significance - Mussoorie takes on an ethereal quality under a blanket of snow. The heavy snowfall of December is beautifully offset by the warm and colourful Christmas celebrations. You can experience the adrenaline rush of winter activities, surrounded by the serene beauty of a snowy landscape.

Why you should visit now - Apart from the other-worldly beauty of a snow-clad Mussoorie, winter is a time of quiet contemplation and long brisk walks. People who visit Mussoorie during winter are not there for the sight-seeing. Lazy explorations and a whole lot of relaxation are the order of the day. Most trekking trails are still open, and you can enhance the thrill factor with a lesson in skiing.

Winter is also a good time to indulge in some of the finest Mussoorie has to offer. The usual local selection of momos and omelettes is supplemented by healthy helpings of flavourful continental food. You will find a delicious array of food on offer along the busy Mall Road. You can get your shopping done at the same time. Look for local artwork to carry home as a souvenir of your holiday. There are really some amazing places to visit in Mussoorie ,so make sure to check it out

Things to know before the visit - Mussoorie in winter is not as crowded as summer. Though you will find fellow tourists, there won’t be maddening crowds. Most tourist attractions may be rendered inaccessible due to the snow. You may get decent deals on your hotel stay, considering the low tourist turnout. While you may not need to book your hotel in advance, it is advisable to confirm your stay beforehand. If you visit around the end of December, you can experience the wonderful Christmas celebrations of Mussoorie.

Tips - During winter, Mussoorie will be cold throughout the day, especially if you’re not used to the cold. Pack your heaviest woollens and carry a heavy-duty jacket or a pullover. Wear sturdy boots or snow-appropriate footwear. Carry a pair of good sunglasses to protect against the glare of the snow. Do not go trekking without a guide and venture off beaten paths on your own. It is easy to get lost in a snow-covered landscape.

Mussoorie In Summer (March - June)

Temperature - Mussoorie has cool summers owing to its proximity to the Himalayas. Temperatures range between 11°C to 36°C. The average daytime temperature is a comfortable 26°C while it gets nippy in the evening. As the sun disappears behind the mountains, the nights get colder.

Weather - The pleasant weather of Mussoorie is its biggest draw during the hot summer months on the plains. The days are comfortable enough to explore and sightsee without any discomfort while the chilly evenings mark a perfect ending to the day. The weather is perfect for long treks and adventure sports like rock climbing. May and June are the hottest summer months, but the temperature gradually goes down as the monsoon progresses.

Significance - Mussoorie is the perfect antidote to oppressive Indian summers. The cool environs of this quaint hill station give you a break from the heat and the chaos of the city. Experience Mussoorie at its liveliest and take home the beautiful memories of an exceptional holiday.

Why you should visit now - The Queen of Hill Stations comes alive during summer. Take in the magnificent sights from the Gun Hill viewpoint and admire the majesty of Kempty Falls. Drive to Lal Tibba, the highest point in Mussoorie, or just take a stroll along the Mall Road. For the adventurers, this is the best season to go on long, invigorating treks. Be a part of Mussoorie’s summer festival where you can enjoy folk dances, cultural performances and a variety of competitions.

Things to know before the visit - Summer is a busy time in Mussoorie. Most of the attractions will be crowded and you may have to wait a while for your turn. Keep an open itinerary so that you can make the most of your holiday. If possible, hire a taxi for the day to take you around as the taxi drivers also make good guides.

Tips - As the temperature varies wildly between day and night, carry some protection against the cold nights. Pack plenty of light clothes and carry plenty of water when you’re out and about. Also, make sure that you have plenty of sunscreen to prevent sunburn and tanning.

Mussoorie In Monsoon (July - September)

Temperature - Monsoon temperatures stay in the low 20’s, occasionally rising up to 32 °C. Mussoorie experiences heavy rainfall that is typical for a hill station. The rain makes it seem cooler than the actual temperature.

Weather - Be prepared for a cold monsoon in Mussoorie. It rains heavily and the town remains enveloped in fog during the evenings and early mornings. Mudslides are a common occurrence and some roads remain closed for the duration of the rainy season.

Significance - Monsoon is the perfect season for some peace and solitude in Mussoorie. There are no tourists to disturb you and there is a beautiful calmness about town. Along with the tranquillity, you will also enjoy significant discounts on your hotel stay.

Why you should visit now - If you want to get away from it all and recharge your batteries, Mussoorie is the place to be in monsoon. All the attractions and tourist spots are closed, and the hill station exudes an aura of calm. Nature, already in abundance, takes over the town and paints it green; a colour soothing to the eye and the soul.

You can observe the local culture without the trappings of a touristy disguise. You can join the locals in celebrating festivals like Hariyala and Olgia, which pay homage to the nature’s bounty.

Things to know before the visit - Rains in the hill station are unpredictable and can easily disrupt your plans. Do not expect all the tourist attractions or activities to be open during monsoon. It is advisable to take one day as it comes and just go with the flow.

Tips - Carry a sturdy umbrella or a good quality rain gear. Ensure enough waterproofing for your clothes and gear as things take time to dry in the moisture-saturated atmosphere. Wear gumboots or sandals with a good grip. Do not venture anywhere without informing your hotel. Avoid eating roadside food and keep a stock of your regular medicines handy.
