Benfica Stadium Tour

  • 8.50 / 10 95 reviews | 1,117 travellers The tour itself was very good. The guide explained everything very well and answered questions. The bad thing is that you had to queue in the sun and it was very hot. In addition, we took a tour of the stadium and the museum, and at the end of the stadium part, no one told us how to get to the museum. They took us to the store and left us there. We had to ask to get to the museum. For the rest, great. They gave us some scarves and some magnets. 8 Anonymous

Benfica Stadium in Lisbon, The Most Beautiful Stadium in Europe

If there’s one thing you should know about Portugal, it’s that you can’t talk about Portuguese culture without also talking about football.

The Portuguese live and breathe football , and with thunderous roars heard across cities and villages during football season, it’s no wonder the sport is also considered the national sport. The club’s home stadium, the amazing Benfica Stadium, is an iconic landmark that fills capacity each year with fans gathering from all around the world to cheer on their beloved team.

All about Benfica Stadium

Whether you’re a football fan or not, visiting Benfica Stadium is a must when you’re in Lisbon to experience firsthand the exhilarating live games and electric cheers from the crowd. One of the top Portuguese clubs , Benfica, has a remarkable story that ties in with the Portuguese people and their history.

Benfica football club

Sport Lisboa e Benfica or Benfica for short, is one of the most famous football clubs in the world, with its club origins dating back to 1904.

Belonging to one of the “big three” teams of Portugal — the others being Futebol Clube do Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal, Benfica is considered a national icon.

Benfica has one of the world’s biggest fanbases

In 2009, Benfica set the Guinness World Record for “the most widely supported football club” with a total of 160,398 paid members. Even more impressive is that Benfica is estimated to have over 14 million fans around the world.

Despite having an already inimitable football fanbase, Benfica also has teams that compete in other sports, including basketball, futsal, rugby, table tennis, and volleyball.

History of the stadium

Over the year, fans have given nicknames to Benfica Stadium, including “O Catedral” (the cathedral) or “Estádio da Luz” (Stadium of Light). It was built in 2003 on the same grounds as the old Benfica Stadium.

One of the most notable matches to happen in Benfica Stadium was the UEFA Euro 2004 Quarter Final, during which Portugal beat England in a thrilling penalty shoot out. Another was the UEFA Euro 2004 Final and the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final which saw national hero, Cristiano Ronaldo, play for Real Madrid.

Benfica’s famous eagles

Benfica is also famous for its iconic mascots Águia Vitória and Águia Gloriosa, two eagles that fly over the fans at the beginning of every game. The fans erupt with thunderous cheers each time they see the eagles. It’s a magnificent spectacle for anyone who’s ever watched a game at Benfica Stadium.

In 2014, an online poll by L’Équipe voted Benfica Stadium as the most beautiful stadium in Europe.

The inside story

The home of Portugal’s most storied football club is a mecca for sports fans. The Stadium of light – Estádio da Luz – has witnessed some of the club’s greatest nights. Completely rebuilt into a state-of-the-art venue in 2003, it has since hosted the final of the European Championship and the Champions League. A museum chronicling the trophy-laden history of Benfica, winner of more Portuguese league titles and cups than any other club, was added a decade later. Benfica was also the first Portuguese team to win the European Cup, led by Eusebio, the legendary ‘Black Panther’. Stadium tours, which include visits to changing rooms and press room as well as the half of fame, are available. You can also meet the club mascots, a trio of American bald eagles. Plus, there are cafés and restaurants to enjoy a refreshment or grab a bite to eat.

Estadio Jose Alvalade

Estadio Jose Alvalade

Club: Sporting Clube de Portugal | Opening: 2003 | Capacity: 50,049 seats

History and description

Estádio José Alvalade was built to serve as a playing venue for the Euro 2004 tournament and to provide Sporting with a modern home. It was built right next to Sporting’s old Estádio José Alvalade .

Estadio Jose Alvalade officially opened on 6 August 2003 with a friendly between Sporting and Manchester United (3-1).

During the European Championships, it hosted three first round group matches, a quarter final, and the semi-final between Portugal and the Netherlands (2-1) .

One year later, in 2005, Estadio Jose Alvalade hosted the UEFA Cup final between CSKA Moscow and Sporting (3-1).

How to get to Estadio Jose Alvalade

Estádio José Alvalade is located in the north of the city of Lisbon, about 7 kilometres from Lisbon’s historic centre and only two kilometres from Lisbon’s other major stadium, Estádio da Luz .

The stadium lies next to the E1 motorway. Take exit 5 Campo Grande to get to the stadium.

If using public transport, the stadium is best reached by metro . Take the green line from the historic centre and get off at station Campo Grande, which is next to the stadium. The yellow line also stops at Campo Grande, and may be useful from destinations north of the city centre.

Address: Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca, Apartado 4120, 1501-806 Lisboa

Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Jose Alvalade

Estadio Jose Alvalade is surrounded by large motorways and residential apartment blocks and housing. Attached to the stadium is Alvaláxia shopping centre, which has a few restaurants and a large cinema.

There area around the stadium is of little interest, though you may find the odd place to get something to eat or drink. Still, you will have much more variety in Lisbon’s very nice city centre.

The Radisson Blu Hote l is located a short walk away from the stadium on the other side of the Av. General Norton de Matas. Even though it comes at the top of the range, it is not that expensive.

There are no alternatives equally close, but there are a few hotels further south near metro stations Entre Campos and Campo Pequeno. The walk is just doable, 20 to 30 minutes, but you can also catch a metro on the yellow line.

The NH Campo Grande and Villa Rica Hotel are closest to the stadium near Entre Campos station, whereas Hotel 3K Europa , Barcelona Hotel , and Turim Iberia Hotel are some of the options near Campo Pequeno. For all hotels near Estadio Jose Alvalade click here .

Of course, if you are spending more time in Lisbon, staying closer to the city centre may be a better alternative, in which case you can see the available hotels here .

Beautiful stadium. Was at a match there last week, the atmosphere was electric. Sporting’s ultra fans behind the goal end never stopped singing, chanting & waving their huge flags from start to finish. The ultras fill the goal end, can’t get a seat there, i got a seat on the next section right beside them. We’ll worth a visit for a match, better experience than any English premier match I’ve been at.

beautiful stadium. the whole experience is worth it. starting with eating and drinking as fans gather just outside the stadium. with beers for as little as 1euro and the famous “bifanas” sandwiches not expensive either. the organised ultras of Juve Leo always put an amazing show with the banners, flags and smoke flares. the fans never stop singing, and the Frank Sinatra “my way” song is a great competition to Liverpool’s YNWA. SUPERB EXPERIENCE. try to go and watch a SPORTING vs benfica game!!

The capacity of 50,000 might be around the same as the original Jose Alvalade opened in 1956, but the Alvalade XXI is a completely different beast.

T aylor Swift is back by popular demand. The North American leg of her historically popular Eras Tour ended alongside the summer: Her last tour date was Aug. 27 in Mexico City. After a little break, she’s starting up again on Nov. 9, this time in South America, starting in Buenos Aires.

There, roughly 240 fans have been systematically taking turns camping out in four tents outside of the Estadio River Plate, some since June. According to Pitchfork, an internal spreadsheet keeps track of how many hours individuals have spent in a tent, which raises the chances of being one of the first fans in line.

In June, the group’s rules leaked online and went viral. They contain such requirements as: No one under 18 is allowed, two people minimum and three people maximum per night, and you must spend at least one night per month in the tent. Some Swifties even offer to log hours in the tent on behalf of people in other provinces who can’t be there in person—for a price.

Where the record-breaking Eras Tour is headed next

After her trio of sold-out shows in Buenos Aires, Swift will perform from Nov. 17-19 at the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro and from Nov. 24-26 at Allianz Parque in São Paulo. After a winter break, February will take her to Tokyo, Melbourne, and Sydney, while March will see her in Singapore.

Summer 2024 will see Swift take the Eras Tour through Europe, including stops in Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon, Dublin, and London. A second North American leg will begin next October, in Toronto.

The Eras Tour has become known for Swift revealing “surprise songs.” At each show, she sings  two surprise acoustic versions of often lesser-known tracks. Of roughly 161 options , Swift has played 106 songs. That’s 17 from Red (Taylor's Version) , 15 from Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , 14 from Fearless (Taylor's Version) , 10 from Taylor Swift , 11 from 1989 , 9 from Midnights , 7 from evermore , 9 from Lover , 6 from folklore , and 7 from Reputation .

The next leg of the tour will likely see Swift perform some of the more than 50 songs on the list. And at the last show on the first U.S. leg of her tour, Swift announced that she would be releasing the re-recorded “Taylor’s Version” of 1989 , so the new songs “ from the vault ,” that almost made the original cut and are now available, are eligible as surprise tracks.

After 56 shows each, Swift has surpassed Beyoncé as having the highest-grossing concert tour by a woman. The former has grossed $780 million so far, while the latter grossed $579.8 million. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie, which came out on Oct. 13, smashed records, making more than $230 million worldwide.

And Travis Kelce—a Kansas City Chiefs tight end and Swift’s new beau—may or may not be coming along to South America with her. Kelce alluded to potentially heading “ somewhere sunny ” for the weekend on New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce , his podcast with his brother, a center for the Philadelphia Eagles.
