Hernia Surgery: What You Need to Know
A hernia occurs when there is weakness or even a whole in a muscle that allows tissue or organs to bulge up through the defect. Hernias range widely in severity from hardly noticeable to life-threatening. Surgery may be necessary to remove a hernia.
Where Do Hernias Form?
A hernia can develop in many different areas of your body. The most common area are the abdomen and groin areas. Some hernias are present at birth. These are known as congenital hernias. A hernia can be develop later in life. It can grow over time or present as a more immediate complication from a surgery or procedure.
Will You Need Hernia Surgery?
Not all hernias require surgery. If your hernia causes severe pain and discomfort, or continues to grow, your doctor may recommend surgical intervention to remove it. If tissues become trapped in the abdominal wall, this hernia is considered to be an incarceration and needs surgery. If an incarceration goes untreated, it can lead to strangulation. This is an emergency situation where blood supply to your tissues gets cut off, according to Very Well Health. Surgery in this case is a must.
Type of Hernia Surgery
There are two types of procedures that doctors use to perform hernia surgery. Your physician will determine which surgery is best for you depending on your hernia’s size, location and type along with your general health, age and lifestyle. In either case, most patients can go home the same day as the operation.
- Laparoscopy: Surgeons will the abdominal cavity with gas to get a good look at your organs. He or she will make a few small incisions near the hernia, insert a thin tube with a camera on the end, and repair the hernia with mesh. You’ll be under general anesthesia for this surgery.
- Open surgery: For this surgery, local or general anesthesia can be used. The surgeon will cut open your skin, and then push the hernia back into place or remove it totally. Then the weak area of muscle where the hernia pushed through will be stitched tight. Additional mesh may be placed for support.
Surgery Risks
All surgeries come with some degree of risk, and hernia surgery is no different. You may experience infection of the wound, blood clots, pain in the area where the surgery was performed, nerve damage and even recurrence of the hernia, according to WebMD .
Recovering from Surgery
Be sure to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to the letter. Let you body take the time it needs to heal. Do not do any sort of heavy lifting while you recover, as you risk an incisional hernia. Recovery is typically faster with laparoscopic surgery than with open surgery. On average, most laparoscopic patients return to their normal routine a week sooner.

One of these success stories could be you!

Living is the best part of this journey. I did this because I wanted to live my life.

Whatever's holding you back, let it go. There's a life out there waiting for you that's beyond your imagination.

Think long-term about your health and how much happier you will be to be able to go out and do things.

I made the right choice in the "choose your own adventure" book of life. The choice that I made that has resulted in a path that is going to end way further down the line with a longer life.

I feel amazing. I have so much energy. I feel like 'JoAnn' again. I am happier than I have ever been in my life. I wish I would hav done it 10 years earlier.

I feel so much more energetic and so much more alive… I can do anything that I want to do!

Preparing for weight loss surgery can feel like an overwhelming experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Dr. David Davtyan is committed to making you as comfortable as possible in the days leading up to your procedure, by making sure you know exactly what to expect every step of the way.

What occurs after your surgery is just as important as the procedure itself. Your recovery and follow-up care are critical to your success, as they play a vital role in ensuring you’re able to lose the precise amount of weight you need to reclaim your health.

Weight loss surgery will transform your life, health and appearance – but only if you commit to making the necessary changes. With healthy nutrition and exercise moving forward, you’ll heal properly, lose weight quickly and reclaim your health. And although it will take some hard work and discipline, you’ll come to love your new and healthy way of living in no time.

After weight loss surgery, you won’t be able to eat exactly the same way you did before your procedure. Your diet will need to change – but that’s actually a good thing! Not only will these changes improve your overall health, but they will also ensure that you’re able to experience the rapid and dramatic weight loss you need.
