About Cruising to Halong Bay

Mystical and magical, Halong Bay -- comprised of more than 1,969 uninhabited islands and rock formations -- is one of Asia's great natural wonders. Vietnamese legend has it that the archipelago came into being when a dragon fell to earth; Ha Long Bay, loosely translated, means the Bay of the Descending Dragon. Situated in the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pack your cameras and get up early as the scenery starts several hours before your ship docks, and witnessing fishing boats among the rocks at sunrise is a moment not to be missed.

Cruise passengers have two main choices of what to do in Halong Bay. You can either explore the bay on a "junk" cruise of varying duration or make the trek to Hanoi, a three-hour drive each way. Some ships dock for more than one day, allowing you to stay in Hanoi one night or take an overnight cruise. Even if your ship doesn't do this, your port stop will be at least 12 hours to allow people enough time for longer excursions.

Halong Bay City itself is on a growth spurt. Construction cranes dot the port (known as Bai Chay), luxury hotels and resorts are on tap and the government is looking to build a beach to entice more tourism. Residents are very proud of the Bai Chay Bridge, a 3,629-foot cable-stayed bridge that changes color at night; it's a pretty sight at nighttime sail-away.

Yes, you are allowed to swim in some areas of the bay, specifically:

• Halong Bay : You can only swim in Titop Island, where most Halong overnight cruises pass by on the first day of the itinerary.
• Lan Ha Bay : You are freely swum by the overnight anchor point around Ao Ech and Tra Bau Area.
• Bai Tu Long Bay : Unlucky, swimming is restricted in this area for safety reasons.

Note : Please wear a life jacket if needed and don’t go swimming alone!

All cruises in Halong Bay must have permission from the Management Board to stay overnight in the Bay. Based on the weather predictions (high winds, monsoon, thunderstorm, cyclone, storm...), the Management Board has the authority to cancel all cruises on a certain day to guarantee the safety of tourists.

In those cases, the following policies will be applied for the cruise:  

• If the cancellation is informed before you leave Hanoi (you have not used any service yet): 100% refund
• If the cancellation is informed during the trip (you have already used some services: transfer, lunch, day trip, hotel,...): Only the fee of these services will be charged and we will refund the whole remaining amount
• If the trip is cut down from 3 days/2 nights to 2 days/1 night, we will charge as 2 days/1 night trip, plus other services you have already used, and refund the remaining amount

• The cancellation is announced ONLY by the Management Board and often on short notice of time. Therefore your understanding of these situations is highly appreciated.
• The period from May to July is considered stormy weather in Halong Bay with many unpredictable weather conditions. Hence more cruises will be canceled on short notice during this season.

Everything was fine, the cruise was very good for its cheap price. The cabin, despite not having a balcony, has a big window so we can still watch the bay. The food was well-cooked and tasted good. Special thanks to our guide who is knowledgeable and super charming. If you're on a budget, this cruise is suitable for you.

2-day cruise aboard this almost privatized boat, only 2 cabins. Perfect meals, always smiling, and helpful crew. Luxurious cabin with a jacuzzi For activities, I like the gentle awakening (Tai Chi), and demonstration of cutting vegetables and fruits into flowers and animals. A wonderful trip overall, but I can't help noticing the rubbish in the water. They should do something to fix it.

The boat was everything we could ask for. Breakfast and all meals exceeded expectations. We encouraged ourselves to try different foods until we were full :D. The staff were incredibly attentive and helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. 5+ stars from us. We’ll recommend this cruise for our friend's next destination.

Other smaller islands in Ha Long Bay include Ti Top Island , about 8 km southeast of Bai Chay Port. The islet was named in 1962 after a visit from former Soviet Union astronaut, Gherman Titov. Dau Go Cave is one of the most visited caves in the bay. You can see stalactites and stalagmites that are 20 meters tall. An English-speaking guide leads you through a 90-step stairway to get to the cave. It has 3 main sections that are illuminated with natural and artificial lighting. There are formations in the shapes of people, animals, and objects. At the end of Dau Go Cave is a small pond with clear water. Locals claim that fairies use the pond to descend to Earth.

Trinh Nu , also known as 'Virgin Cave', has a statue of a woman. It's said that she was turned into stone after her death, having been unable to return home after being forced to marry an old mandarin. Local legend states that she escaped from him because her father could not pay a debt. When fishermen found her body, they buried her and built a small shrine inside the grotto.  

Sung Sot Cave has 2 chambers with a square-shaped outer chamber and a 30-metre-tall limestone ceiling. Set within Bo Hon Island, its inner chamber formations resemble sentries conversing with one another. There’s another formation in the middle of the chamber that looks like a general surveying his troops.  

The Kissing Rocks islets are undoubtedly the symbols of Ha Long Bay. The 2 rocks resemble a rooster and a hen facing each other. Locals believe they symbolize eternal love as they've been in Halong Bay for thousands of years.

Ha Long Bay dinner cruises typically feature a menu of Vietnamese dishes such as spring rolls, stir-fried vegetables, fried rice, seafood, poultry and meat dishes. A fruit platter is commonly served as dessert. Alcoholic beverages and snacks are normally available at additional charges.
