Callaway X-Tour Irons Review

When we picked up the Callaway X-Tour irons you could see immediately from the back that it was a Callaway, with the notch design and undercut cavity.

However when you put it down at address it looked like any other premium iron with a compact head, thin top line and no cavity in view. Amazing (for a Callaway).

It had a very classic offset and lie and the feel from the forged head was very solid, if a little heavy due to the cavity system that keeps the weight low and behind the face.

We tested it with a True Temper Dynamic Gold stiff steel shaft and the club felt heavier than competitors. Overall we think low handicappers should go for this over the X-18 Pro Series and if the price is right, then it could open up a new market for Callaway.

I purchased a set of these off Ebay after having played the Titleist 680CB's for about 14 years. The thing that interested me about this set is that the previous owner had Graphite matrix shafts put in them and had the loft and lie adjusted for all of them as they are like the PXG's and every club is set to a 37" length. Granted, I haven't hit them yet, but based on these reviews, I'm really looking forward to it and how could I go wrong for $175? The shafts are almost that much, let alone the mid-size Winn Dry-tack grips. I will update after a few rounds. And yes, I agree...great look at setup and doesn't look like a big bertha or a shovel on the ground. Very attractive, classic setup.

I have a 22 handicap and find my Callaway X-Tour steel shaft clubs easier to use than so called game improvement irons. They are beautiful to look at and have a massive cavity which makes them so easy to get airborne, thus creating a very long carry distance. A beautiful iron which although a bit on the heavy side can be used by high and low handicappers alike.

Tried these Callaway X-Tour Irons out down at my local range/shop along with pretty much everything else in the shop and the only thing that came close was the Wilson Pi5, but enough of them more about these beasts!!!! These Callaway X-Tour Irons are truly awesome, stupidly easy to use given they are forged and perfectly balanced to shape around the pin, almost every shot I look at with one of these in my hands looks acheivable and, this is where I got confused, they are made by Callaway!? the most hated brand by any better player yet here I am loving them!! really are a great buy as they'll be around for a while, the forged feel is excellent, once you have tried forged irons. you'll never go back...

When the new Callaway X-Tour irons first appeared a couple of months ago, I hit the 6 iron several times per day and really got to enjoy the "feel" of the club. I then played 4 rounds with the Callaway X-Tour irons with a Stiff Dynamic Gold Shaft to evaluate their performance. I made some of the best iron shots I've ever made almost right away. The irons performed admirably with a mid-high trajectory and very straight. These are arguably the "softest" irons I've ever hit. Their performance actually improved with each round so I purchased a set with the same Dynamic Gold shaft but in Regular flex. I have now played more than 10 rounds with my new Irons and continue to get excellent performance. I particularly like the look of the club at set-up. They are unlike the customary clunky, bulky looking, thick top- lined Callaway?s. I actually enjoy knowing where the clubhead is at all times. I find them to be much softer and more accurate with more spin and ball stopping ability than any of my former irons. They are very forgiving and yet allow me to "work" the ball. Needless to say that I am thrilled with their performance...they are definitely keepers. I would recommend them to anyone with a low to mid handicap that wants to experience the feel of a Forged club.

At address you are amazed that this is a Callaway. The X-Tour looks like any other iron, albeit a bit heavier. The strike is very solid and the feel is very good, although not up there with a forged Mizuno. However the Callaway X-Tour irons are a good alternative to the X-18 Pro Series and worth a hit.

Best Callaway Irons I've hit, basically because these Callaway X-Tours didn't look like typical Callaway Irons. They have a thin top line and have a Titleist or Mizuno iron look about them. Very easy to hit and gave me a penetrating flight at a decent height. They look good from above and sit behind the ball well.

I have had these irons for about 4 years and absolutely love them. At first I noticed a loss of about 5 yards from my Cleveland clubs, and that is because these are tour irons and are about 2 degrees weaker than most manufactors cast irons so I had them bent 2 degrees strong...problem solved. I also had them bent 2 degrees flat because I'm on the short side. I then changed out the shafts from those heavy S300's to Project X 5.0's which are nearly 15 grams lighter and make a HUGE difference in ball flight. I have recently tried out the Mizuno MP-53's but they don't seem to have quiet the buttery feel of my x-tours, which really suprised me since Mizuno is know for their soft as butter feeling clubs. These clubs are also VERY forgiving for a forged iron.

I have had these irons since 2006. Mine have 6.5 project x shafts - the old satin finish version without the frequency noted on the label. I have played them on and off, switching out with Mizuno and other irons. Every time i come back to these i am amazed. They allow me to control ball flight - working it left to right or right to left plus hit high shots that stop fast or punch shots that fight the wind. Feel is as good as my Mizzi's, just different. Forgiveness is exceptional for a players club. Turf interaction is wonderful, allowing for additional forgiveness on misses. I haven't found a club yet that is superior to these babies, and that's the reason they don't get sold and keep returning to the bag. Overall grade: A+

I don't know what it is about these irons, but I have never hit any set of irons with more consistency wether that be in accuracy, trajectory or distance. I've hit numerous sets of irons, and even though these don't have a very soft feel or provide you with a ton of distance, they make up for that in weight, accuracy and consistency. My GIR % has never been better.

Ebay purchase. 3-PW. Rifle 6.0 stiff steel shafts. Golf pride grips. $200. I have an on & off relationship with Callaway clubs. Over the past 3 years I've bought and sold 3 Callaway iron sets and several Drivers & Woods. I purchased these last week. I've hit about 25 buckets of balls on the range, and played them on a really wet course yesterday. I shot 7 over par, and could have beterred that if my short distance putting was more accurate. These clubs are very, very good. I attribute the accuracy and predictability of the clubs to the Rifle Precision steel shafts. These shafts have no vibration at all. They feel rock solid and stable throughout the swing and ball contact. Comparison to Ping i-3 with JZ stiff shafts - Which I've been playing the past 2 months. *Distance - Ping i-3. Especially 3 & 4 irons. 10 yards longer. *Accuracy - Callaway X-tour. The Callway heads are a bit smaller, so I know it must be the Rifle shafts. *Feel; sensitivity/feedback - Ping. Ball feedback is more apparent and nuanced. Callaway ball strike feels more generic wherever I hit the ball on the clubface. *Looks - Callaway. The chrome and black graphics are a bit flashy and gaudy. But still prettier than the Brown & Tan inserts on the dull gun metal finish of the Ping i3. *Fun factor - Callaway. I have not changed my swing with these clubs. So how is it that for the 1st time in my life I'm hitting greens and the backspin is backing up the ball, just like the pros? Happening with every club in the set, weird but wonderful. Pings hit the green and ball rolls forward several yards.

I have only played 2 times with these irons and I absolutely love them. I love the feel and forgiveness. The only thing is that I do feel that I'm losing some distance. I'm going to keep them !

I bought these on 6/24/09 and took them to the range. I did not need to take them to the course because they are definitely not for me. I currently play Titleist 990 irons and the Callaway's felt very clunky and heavy compared to my current set. I also found that the ball didn't seem to carry very far with the X-tours and I think it's because of the weight. They are beautiful irons and I wanted to like them more than anything but I didn't like them at all.

Bought these clubs about 6 months ago and I've never hit the ball as well. The cavity back makes them so forgiving so that off centre hits still fly most of thee way there. I know some people find that you can't work the ball to well with these clubs, but I find the ball flying straight is good enough for me! I found them quite a heavy club intially (compared my previous dci 990s) but this weight now just makes them feel like such a solid club. Very nice design too, so over the ball the clubhead looks good at address (compared to other callaway designs). Strongly recommend this club to player of any level.

I wanted a forged set of perimeter weighted irons. I am a 4 handicap but at age 63 have suffered dimenished club head speed over the past several. Having forged irons gives me the opportunity to strenghten the lofts and regain some of my lost distance. I can also adjust the lie but didn't need to do so. My purchase was a good value but I was disappointed with the feel of this "forged" golf club. It does not perform up to my expections of a quality and rather "high end" forged club. I've played Mizino lmuch of my career (forty six yrs.) Nothing really wrong with the X-Tour irons, but still a disappointment with lack of feel and performace. I just ordered another set of Mizuno MP 33 irons and look forward to getting back to playing them. Respecfully, Ed Scharff E-bay golf club buyer

Worth every penny

I have owned just about every type of forged iron on the market at one time or another. Titleist, Mizuno, Nike, Hogan just to name a few. These irons are easier to hit than the others. They are the most forgiving forged irons I have owned. You still need to hit the "sweet spot" for optimum results, but slight mis-hits don't punish you in the same way traditional forged irons do. There is no compromise with the feel either. The top line and overall size of the club head is slightly bigger, but it didn't take much to get used to. Workability is not sacrificed at all. They are pricey, but in my opinion, they are worth every cent. It would an extremely special iron to make me give these up.

We were excited at the prospect of hitting the Callaway golf clubs which have transformed Phil Mickleson and Michael Campbell’s game.

The Callaways are lovely, strong-looking golf irons, with the bonus of a reasonably deep cavity back for forgiveness. Harder feeling and higher flying compared to most and a golf club we all strangely struggled to hit well. A little disappointing after high initial expectations.

These clubs are the best I have had, 17.8 handicap and still easy to hit. Traded in the fusions and am couldnt be happier. went with the 5.0 shaft which is great. This is important as if the shaft is too stiff they are harder to hit. Love them and am looking forward to many years of finally being able to hit a forged club, thanks Callaway

Callaway Golf did something brand new when it introduced the X-Tour irons: It made a set of forged irons. The Callaway X-Tour irons were the company's very first forged irons when they debuted in 2005. (Related: What is the difference between forged and cast irons? )

That was a departure for a company that made its mark in game-improvement golf clubs , which included all of its earliest iron sets with their focus on extreme perimeter weighting .

Today Callaway makes premium sets, forged sets, players' irons, along with what it continues to be well-known for: golf clubs that help recreational golfers "miss better."

But that original X-Tour iron set is where Callaway's entry into the premium forged irons segment of the market began.

Finding/Buying Callaway X-Tour Irons Today

The X-Tour irons can still be found through resellers and sites/shops that focus on used golf clubs. According to the PGA.com Value Guide, the resale value of X-Tour irons today is around $70, but you might find them for more or less depending on the source and the condition . We've seen them listed on CallawayPreOwned.com, where they tend to be more expensive — but you are getting them semi-direct from the source that way. (Given how old the set is today, the original X-Tours are getting harder to find. But Callaway made multiple follow-on X-Tour sets in later years, too.)

Looking Back at the Callaway X-Tour Irons

How were the Callaway X-Tour irons described at the time of their debut? That debut was in 2005. Here's what we wrote about them in real time:

March 21, 2005 — The new set of irons from Callaway Golf is new not just for consumers, but for the company, as well. The Callaway X-Tour Irons represent the entry of Callaway — a company built on game-improvement — into the forged irons marketplace.

The X-Tour Irons were designed by Roger Cleveland and, while forged, still feature many of the qualities that have made Callaway irons so popular.

"It has been very exciting for me to work on Callaway Golf's first iron offering in a category that appeals to so many passionate and skilled golfers," Cleveland said. "I believe the X-Tour Irons bring a new level of performance in shot-making that can be easily discerned and enjoyed by better golfers."

The Callaway X-Tour Irons begin shipping to pro shops on April 15, 2005. The MSRP for the set (3-PW) is $1,280.

Callaway says the X-Tour set offers the best of both worlds, "... the playability and feel that better golfers demand (along with) proprietary technologies that have established Callaway Golf as the world's leader in golf equipment."

The Callaway X-Tour Irons feature a notch-weighted, cavity-back head to which the face plate is laser-welded. The back cavity is precision-milled to perfectly fit the face. Both pieces of the clubhead are forged from soft, 1020 carbon steel.

The 2-piece forging allows Callaway, the company said, to incorporate the other technologies well-known to Callaway fans: the 360-degree Undercut Channel, Extreme Notch Weighting and a modified bore through hosel .

The 360-degree Undercut Channel and Extreme Notch Weighting are designed to maximize perimeter weighting, moving more weight to the heel and toe. These qualities help stabilize the club through impact, helping improve the ball flight on mis-hits. These features also provide a deeper center of gravity for more ease of use with the long irons and a higher launch angle .

The modified bore through hosel is longer than typically found in Callaway's S2H2 Technology. The location and length of the hosel further influences the center of gravity, moving it more toward the heel. This quality, Callaway says, helps workability.

The Callaway X-Tour Irons have been in use on professional tours for a while already, with Phil Mickelson and Annika Sorenstam among those pros using them.

The standard shaft is True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts in flexes of R300 (regular), S300 (stiff), and X100 (extra stiff). A 2-iron can be special-ordered to add to the 3-PW standard set.

Walk down memory lane with these, can you believe Mickelson won the Masters with these in 2006 with a full set, they're pretty chunky! I had these, anyone else? Would love to hit these again, very forgiving for their time in that type of iron.

Yeah they were not super small---which was kind of outside the norm for him. He had been playing those weird 731PM things from Titleist or whatever they were called just a few earlier.

I remember these irons, played them for awhile actually.  Great set of irons that looked great at address and provided some forgiveness.

It is difficult to remember that Phil won his first Masters in 2004 - according to wikipedia. Can't even remember that he had the X-Tours in the bag during that time. This was pre-WRX days for me.

The most memorable Phil Mickelson irons - from his Callaway days - have to be the 2012 X-Forged. Those were some money irons.

Bought these in 2006 then only played a handful of rounds a year until 2020. Sold to my best friend who picked up the game... damn near mint! They are indeed chunky though with a thicker topline. Didn't feel like much offset and felt good for what I believe was their first forged iron?

My buddy had a set, and they were some of the softer ironsI’ve hit.   

They felt amazing, but if I remember, if that’s indeed the correct set, he had the badge on the back come off on most of them

I remember he sent them back, and they sent him out a new set I believe, which was nice being that his were pretty dinged up from riding in the cart

Great feeling club, they were softer feeling than my Mizuno MP 30’s at the time.

Loved those irons, one of the 1st sets I bought new.

Hit the X-Tours once, felt OK (shaft probably too robust). In 2009, hit the X20 and X20 Tours during major bag switchout. Cautiously went with X20s for two seasons, then came across almost new X20 Tours on Callaway PO. The X20T irons felt so smooth... And, the brush nickel finish and the black badge and ferrule with navy blue grips looked ultra chic.

Played X20 Tours from 2011 to 2018. Halfway through, I shed the PX Rifle Flighted 5.0 (115 grams) for NS Pro 8950GH (97 grams). Hit some great shots with them. One day, they felt heavy and I switched to TE Exotics CB Pro Tungsten (hollow-head GI) to improve launch.

My current MAXs reflect a switch to graphites in all but putter shaft.

A couple of years back, we had a thread on which club should be tweaked and reissued. I put in my vote to generate the X20 Tour+ .

I have some 2007 X-Tours and they are one of my favorite irons of all time. I also shot several of my most notable rounds with them. They were deemed non-conforming, so i stopped playing them, but I hung onto them for my a "guest bag." I would play these tomorrow if they were legal.

Yep, had a set of those. First irons after selling -- regrettably -- my Ping ISI copper set. I liked them but didn't love them. Eventually moved on to Mizuno forged cavity backs.

I remember them being "chunkier" as well, but a definite evolution of the older BB style irons from the mid/late 90's.

I still take it out occasionally when my swing feels good. Never hit it very well, but it was one of the first "brand name" clubs I ever bought, so it's staying for sentimental purposes.

The X-20 Tours are a magnificent iron. Callaway hit on something special with them. Even though I never had the chance to swing them, you could just tell.

They look like they got something right.

Still have them and still rotate them with Ping S55s all the time. Compact with a slightly chunky topline. As good as any current forged club in feeling as well.

Yep, bagged them for a bit, but sold them off when I got the X20 Tours that were just as bulky but worked better for me. I still have the X20 Tours, somewhere, and a set of 2007 X Forged that I still use from time to time..

I still have mine in the closet and they are dinged the f*** up.  Not sure what to do with them because they have S300's in them and I play composite shafts now.  Wouldn't get much of anything off BST or the bay.  I may just gift them to my nephew later who's 5 and has just taken up the game.

I recall the massive buzz here when these were revealed prior to shipping.  One of those "best of both worlds", you know, compact players head with game improvement attributes in the same forged head.  People were freaking out in anticipation.
