Staff at Benone Tourist Complex will be happy to provide visitors with relevant tourist information as Benone Tourist Complex is a designated Local Information Office.
Benone Beach, a European Blue Flag beach, is only a few minutes walk from the complex and is easily accessible via dune paths.
Life and Legend
Benone strand is the official name for the place but the locals call the whole place Magilligan after the clan which once lived here. Now, officially, the beach facing north is Benone while Magilligan is the beach to the West, the eastern shore of Lough Foyle.
Magilligan, like Portstewart, Bushfoot and Ballycastle, has been laid down over the years as the sand moved westward, except that the sands at Benone are so much larger. Here there is a massive coastal plain that stretches for more than 12 square miles inland and stops at the river Foyle but the glory of the place is its wide shell strewn Atlantic beach, 7 miles long. At the point, there is a Martello tower, built in Georgian times to defend the estuary from an attack by Napoleon.
A car ferry runs between the point and Greencastle in Donegal on the other side of Lough Foyle. The trip usually takes about 15 minutes.
In the 1920s, the pioneer archaeologist Andrew May worked as an agricultural advisor. He pointed out to the farmers on the plain that their sandy soil was ideal for growing carrots and Magilligan carrots are famous to this day.
Tourist Complex
In the 1960s there was a simple camping site at Benone with a few tents and caravans. The present complex was developed in 1987 and now has a fully serviced caravan and camping site with many other features. The complex is open to both residents and day-trippers. The site is designed to be suitable for all ages and includes a 9-hole golf course, a putting green and a golf practice range. There are also tennis courts, outdoor heated splash pools, an outside activities area with a bouncy castle and an indoor games room.
The main building is a tourist information office, a café and a shop and over the summer there are many organised events.
Other Magilligan Features
In 1824, the Ordnance Survey set up a tower at Magilligan to provide a base line for the first scientific mapping of the British Isles. The tower isn’t very tall and looks like a low circular wall with a railing on top. Inside there is a small chamber made of Dungiven sandstone. The centre point of the base is set into this foundation, a mark made of platinum wire which is set in lead and concrete. A flagstone is set above the wire inlaid with a metal plate with a cross, directly above the mark in the wire below.
The length of the base was nearly eight miles. The accuracy of the work was immediately tested several times by measuring the first 400 feet and the results disagreed by no more than the tiniest fragment of a full stop. In 1960 the Ordnance Survey re-measured the 8 mile base line with electronic equipment and found the error to be 1 inch or 25 mm.
There is a Field Centre run by the Western Education and Library Board. The Magilligan Field Centre provides first class facilities in an informal atmosphere for outdoor learning. It is a residential and day facility committed to providing consistent, safe, high quality learning experiences related to the environment. Its programmes have been uniquely designed and many schools have benefited from it.

Waves Coffee Shop & Bistro
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
After our winter walk on Benone Strand, we were delighted to discover Waves in the Benone Tourist Complex nearby. The husband and wife team who run The coffee shop were more than friendly and their scones tasted delicious with an Americano. Highly recommended.

Friendly staff, great coffee and good food, what more can anyone ask. Their home made soups and stews made using fresh local produce are first class. Mind you the cakes are something else as well.
Beautiful coffee break. Great location. Staff were ok but service was quite slow. Think £23 for 2 sausage rolls, 2 filter coffees and some garlic bread is a little bit overpriced. Food was average
I have been to waves cafe a few times as it’s a great location and handy with a park beside. On the few occasions I have been, I have found the staff to be unfriendly and unhelpful. And avoid eye contact when possible. Also ordered... a pancake for my child which was overpriced thinking it would be freshly baked and turned out to be a packet pancake. Very disappointed. Another time going in I was greeted with a negative & left with a negative. When I went in the staff didn’t greet me they just said there is no more food today. And a negative greeting on the out. Think they pick who they like to serve, need to be part of some sort of click to be treated nicely. Pity as such a good location. More
Staying here for a week and this would have been a great spot for lunch or coffee treats. We’ve stayed before and today we’re reminded why we don’t go here to eat. Same manager. Same disorganised and slow service and really bad attitude. The food... is fine, but the experience is not, staff are young and inexperienced as mentioned by other reviewers and managed by the owners son. In this case our sweet was brought out before the savoury so the ice cream was melted. When I tried to jolly along the savoury food so that the sdessert would not be ruined, the manager only said it was up to us ask for desserts to come out after the savoury food!! This could possibly be true but the cafe order taker could also check that - it being their role/ job!! Hard to enjoy food, even good food , when you are being disrespected. He could have handled it with a smile and done his best to get our mains to us quickly or replaced the pudding but only cared about being ‘right’. Young staff managed by Immature manager with a high opinion of his own importance. This is an example of a seaside venue with a captive market/ monopoly and a guaranteed income producing a really bad customer service. It’s a shame as it could be lovely and we would like to have gone there. But we don’t want to now. I also watched three separate young children put £1 into a toy machine at their door and receive no toy to general dismay, for which the venue took no responsibility- again unkindly. More
We popped down to Waves when we saw they were doing evening meals - it was amazing! Kids had burgers and really enjoyed them. We had the chicken stack and Katsu cod- both absolutely delicious! Portions were generous and included an extra side dish- we... had truffle Parmesan fries and Bombay fries which were both really tasty. Service is friendly and prompt and the atmosphere was lovely. Kids had a run around in the wee playground after their meals which was an added bonus. We enjoyed ourselves so much we’ve booked to go again and popped in for cakes and coffee another day which were also fab. Looking forward to our return visit! More
This is one of best cafes in Northern Ireland, all the staff and the wee fire make you feel so welcome. The food is great, amazing coffee. The place is situated in Benone Tourist Complex only few mins walk from Beautiful Benone Beach a must... if your in the area. More

The food was just OK, the staff were young and didn't want to be there. The bill was £30+ for breakfast! (2 adults and 2 young children). An absolute rip off for the quality and quantity of food delivered to us. We would have been... better off at a hot food deli!! I definitely will not be back. More
Wife and I were visiting Benone and called into Waves coffee shop and Bistro for a smack on our way to Portrush for a few days. We followed the signs and not sure where the front door was. They have a menu to sort all... tastes. We had the Soda which was very filling and delicious with two latte coffees. More
Fantastic cafe and restaurant ,so friendly and welcoming ,food is great and it is not expensive, just wish they would put a sign out the front to say they are open ,will be back again really great for families a# well with a small play area... beside it,thankyou More
We really enjoyed our visit to waves .it is very dog friendly and Lola enjoyed the treat that the great staff member gave her.The scones were delicious 😋 and the cafe is clean and the music was relaxing.we will definitely visit again soon !🤗
Sounds simple but they do something special with this sandwich, it’s the best one I have had. The menu is big for the size of the place and has something for everyone.
If you have a dog with you and your made to eat outside make sure it isn't overcast because after paying for your meal you won't be accommodated for inside if caught in a torrential downpour. For a family orientated park you need to get... into the twenty first century. More
We took our almost two year old to benone beach and stopped for lunch, it exceeded our expectations. Staff were lovely and the food was delicious- the little one had chicken and chips and devoured it, we had the onion soup and beef panini -... def recommend it! More
Nice enough little cafe. Over a weekend spent about £40 on breakfast and coffee in this place. Ordered pancakes for my son and asked if there was syrup when they were served. I was greeted with ‘you will have to pay for syrup’ £1 for... a little small drop. Pretty poor. They cost themselves a tip and also this negative review. In the same area lively bar at the entrance to the camping complex. Give it a try the staff are lovely and don’t charge for a smile. More

More
